Chapter 12All chaptersChapter 14

Verse 1 (padma.6.13.1)

nārada uvāca tato jālaṁdharaḥ śrutvā daityakolāhalaṁ raṇe ājagāma rathārūḍho yatra devaḥ sadāśivaḥ

Narada said: Then Jalandhara, hearing the tumult of the demons in that battle, came riding his chariot to where the god Sadashiva stood.

Verse 2 (padma.6.13.2)

sārathiṁ khaḍgaromāṇaṁ kopātsatvaramabravīt saṁpreṣaya rathaṁ śīghraṁ sahasrahayayojitam

In anger, he swiftly told his charioteer Khadgaroma: 'Send the chariot forth at once, yoked with a thousand horses.

Verse 3 (padma.6.13.3)

hanmi taṁ tāpasaṁ śauryājjaṭābhasmāsthibhūṣitam vṛṣārūḍhasya kā śaktiḥ paṁgoryuddhe mayā saha

'I shall slay by my own valor that ascetic, adorned with matted hair, ashes, and bones; what power has a lame man on a bull, against me, in battle?'

Verse 4 (padma.6.13.4)

nārada uvāca ityuktvā khaḍgaromāṇamābhāṣya ca tathoddhataḥ gṛhītvā kārmukaṁ ghoraṁ rathenādhāvata drutam

Narada said: Having said this, and thus spoken to Khadgaroma, filled with pride, taking up his terrible bow, he rushed forward swiftly by chariot.

Verse 5 (padma.6.13.5)

taṁ rurodha tadāyāṁtaṁ vīrabhadraḥ śitaiḥ śaraiḥ nirucchvāsīkṛtenāpi sa kāyena śarairvṛtaḥ

Virabhadra blocked him as he came, with sharpened arrows; even having made his body breathless, he yet remained covered in arrows.

Verse 6 (padma.6.13.6)

devairyadyapi tulyo'bhūdbhūteśasya parigrahaḥ tathāpi kiṁ kapālāni tulāṁ yāṁti kalānidheḥ

Though even the gods' own strength might seem equal to that of the Lord of Beings — yet do mere skulls ever equal the very treasury of the moon?

Verse 7 (padma.6.13.7)

vivyādha maṇibhadro'pi śaraiḥ sāgaranaṁdanam pāśena maṇibhadraṁ tu hatvovāceśvaraṁ vacaḥ

Manibhadra too pierced the ocean's son with arrows; having struck Manibhadra down with a noose, he spoke these words to the Lord —

Verse 8 (padma.6.13.8)

ehi yoddhuṁ mahādeva śastrābhyāso'sti te yadi tvaṁ māṁ prahara na tvāhamādau hanmi jaṭādharam

'Come, fight, O Mahadeva, if you have practiced with weapons! Strike me — I shall not strike first, matted-locked one.'

Verse 9 (padma.6.13.9)

iti bruvaṁtaṁ taṁ garvādvīrabhadro'tha sāyakaiḥ pūrayāmāsa saṁkruddho yathā padmaṁ raviḥ karaiḥ

As he spoke thus, out of pride, Virabhadra, enraged, filled him with arrows, as the sun fills a lotus with its rays.

Verse 10 (padma.6.13.10)

maṇibhadro'tha gadayā sainyaṁ tasya samāhanat rathopari rathaṁ vīra turagaṁ turagopari

Then Manibhadra struck his army with his mace — chariot upon chariot, O hero, horse upon horse,

Verse 11 (padma.6.13.11)

gajopari gajaṁ hatvā pātayāmāsa bhūtale raktapaṁkāruṇā bhūmiḥ saṁjātā durgamā kṣaṇāt

and elephant upon elephant, he struck down and felled to the ground; the earth, red with bloody mud, became impassable in an instant.

Verse 12 (padma.6.13.12)

śailācca gaṇamukhyāśca dānavāñjaghnurāhave pataṁti dānavāḥ śūrā gataprāṇā mahītale

The chief attendants, come from the mountain, struck down the demons in that battle; the heroic demons fell lifeless to the ground.

Verse 13 (padma.6.13.13)

ruṁḍadordaṁḍamuṁḍaiśca karipṛṣṭhakarorubhiḥ pataṁti dānavāḥ śūrā pūritā vasudhā nṛpa

O king, the earth filled with severed torsos, arms, and heads, and with the backs, trunks, and thighs of elephants; the heroic demons, falling, filled the whole ground.

Verse 14 (padma.6.13.14)

nārada uvāca evaṁvidhaṁ raṇe dṛṣṭvā haramatyaṁtadurjayam bhuvane ca tathānyāni dṛṣṭavā~llakṣaṇāni saḥ

Narada said: Seeing Hara thus utterly unconquerable in that battle, and beholding other signs in the world as well,

Verse 15 (padma.6.13.15)

tejo'nyadevanakṣatra śaśāṁka sakalādiṣu uddhāṭitajagatkośamanyadevaravermahaḥ

another radiance among the gods, the stars, the moon, and all — the world's own treasury laid bare, another splendor of the sun —

Verse 16 (padma.6.13.16)

bhagnaḥ punaściṁtitavāṁstato jālaṁdharo nṛpa na dṛṣṭā sā mayā gaurī yāṁ māmāhāti nāradaḥ

O king, then Jalandhara, his spirit broken, thought once more: 'I still have not seen that Gauri of whom Narada spoke to me.

Verse 17 (padma.6.13.17)

sāṁprataṁ śāśvate sthāne kathaṁ drakṣyāmyumāṁ sthitām tāṁ hi draṣṭuṁ vrajāmyādau paścādyotsyāmi śaṁbhunā

'Now, in this eternal place, how shall I go and see Uma standing there? Let me first go to see her — afterward I shall fight with Shambhu.'

Verse 18 (padma.6.13.18)

ciṁtayitveti manasā daityaṁ prāhārṇavātmajaḥ śuṁbhaṁ caṁḍajaye vīra mama tulyaparākrama

Having thought this in his mind, the ocean's son said to the demon Shumbha: 'O hero, you are as valorous as I — to win this battle,

Verse 19 (padma.6.13.19)

dhṛtvā matsadṛśaṁ rūpaṁ saṁgrāmaṁ kartumarhasi tava yuddhasya bhāro'yaṁ śibirasya balasya ca

'you should take on a form resembling mine and carry on this battle. The whole burden of this fight, and of the camp and army, is now yours.

Verse 20 (padma.6.13.20)

ahaṁ yāsyāmi tāṁ draṣṭuṁ gaurīṁ maccittahāriṇīm ityuktvātha dadau tasmai svāṁgāduttārya maṁḍanam

'I go to see that Gauri who has stolen away my very heart.' Having said this, he gave him, removing them from his own body, his ornaments,

Verse 21 (padma.6.13.21)

varmaśastrādikaṁ datvā rathaṁ sārathisaṁyutam durvāraṇena sahitaḥ sainyaṁ muktvodadheḥ sutaḥ

his armor and weapons, and his chariot together with its charioteer; then, together with Durvarana, the ocean's son, leaving the army,

Verse 22 (padma.6.13.22)

alakṣitastato gatvā guhāṁ guptāṁ tu pārthiva mānasottaraśailasya hararūpaṁ dadhāra saḥ

O king, went unseen to a hidden cave; there he assumed the very form of Hara upon the Manasottara mountain.

Verse 23 (padma.6.13.23)

dhṛtvā durvāraṇe rūpaṁ naṁdinaḥ sadṛśaṁ tathā athāruruhatuḥ śailaṁ chadmaśaṁkaranaṁdinau

Having given Durvarana too a form like Nandi's, that disguised 'Shankara' and disguised 'Nandi' then climbed the mountain,

Verse 24 (padma.6.13.24)

yatrāsti śikhare gaurī sakhibhiḥ sahitā nṛpa tamāyāṁtaṁ śarairbhinnaṁ skaṁdhamālambya naṁdinaḥ

to where Gauri stood on the peak, together with her companions, O king; coming, leaning on 'Nandi's' shoulder, pierced with arrows —

Verse 25 (padma.6.13.25)

raktāktamaṁbaraṁ dṛṣṭvā bhavānī vismitābhavat sakhyastasyā jayādyāstāḥ jagmustaṁ saṁbhramānvitāḥ

seeing his blood-stained garment, Bhavani was astonished; her companions, Jaya and the rest, ran to him in alarm.

Verse 26 (padma.6.13.26)

śaṁkarasyāṁtikaṁ gatvā papracchustaṁ suduḥkhitāḥ kiṁ jātaṁ tava deveśa kena tvaṁ saṁgare jitaḥ

Going to 'Shankara's' side, they asked him, greatly distressed: 'What has happened to you, O Lord of gods? By whom have you been overcome in this battle?

Verse 27 (padma.6.13.27)

saśalyastvaṁ kathaṁ nātha saṁsārīva prarodiṣi ityuktaḥ pradadau tābhyo bhūṣaṇāni pṛthakpṛthak

'My lord, pierced by a wound, why do you weep like an ordinary worldly man?' Thus addressed, he gave them, one by one, his ornaments,

Verse 28 (padma.6.13.28)

uttārya śanakairaṁgāt vāsukiprabhṛtīni ca gaṇeśaskaṁdaśirasīcchinne kukṣau vilokya ca

gently removing them from his body — Vasuki and the rest — and, showing Ganesha's and Skanda's heads, severed, lying in his own lap —

Verse 29 (padma.6.13.29)

hā skaṁda hā gaṇeśeti hā rudretyaṁbikārudat tasyāḥ sakhyastataḥ sarvā ruruduḥ śokakarśitāḥ

Ambika cried out, 'Alas, Skanda! Alas, Ganesha! Alas, Rudra!' Then all her companions too wept, wasted with grief.

Verse 30 (padma.6.13.30)

atrābravījjayāṁ naṁdī tvamenaṁ paripālaya maṇibhadro vīrabhadraḥ puṣpadaṁtaśca vīryavān

Here that 'Nandi' (Durvarana in disguise) said to Jaya: 'You look after him.' 'Manibhadra, Virabhadra, and the mighty Pushpadanta,

Verse 31 (padma.6.13.31)

daṁbhano dhūmatimiraḥ kūṣmāṁḍādyā raṇe hatāḥ caṁḍī bhṛṁgī kirīṭiśca mahākālaśca śṛṁkhalī

'Dambhana, Dhumatimira, Kushmanda and others were slain in battle; Chandi, Bhringi, Kiriti, and Mahakala, Shrinkhali,

Verse 32 (padma.6.13.32)

caṁḍīśo guptanetraśca kālādyāśca hatā raṇe vināyakasya skaṁdasya śirasī bhramatā mayā

'Chandisha, Guptanetra, and Kala and others were slain too in that battle; the heads of Vinayaka and Skanda, as I wandered,

Verse 33 (padma.6.13.33)

dṛṣṭe mahāraṇe devi ityuktvātha purokṣipat tacchrutvā naṁdino vākyaṁ śirasī gṛhya putrayoḥ

'I saw in that great battle, O Goddess.' Having said this, he threw them down before her. Hearing 'Nandi's' words, taking her two sons' heads in her hands,

Verse 34 (padma.6.13.34)

pārvatī vilalāpoccaiḥ putraputreti jalpatī tārakāre kathaṁ yuddhe hatastvaṁ siṁdhusūnunā

Parvati wailed aloud, crying, 'My son, my son!' — 'O foe of Taraka, how were you slain in battle by the ocean's son?

Verse 35 (padma.6.13.35)

tvaṁ hi trivāsaro devaiḥ senāpatyo'bhiṣecitaḥ tadā tvayā kathaṁ vīra tārakākhyo nipātitaḥ

'You were consecrated by the gods themselves only three days ago as their commander-in-chief; how then, O hero, were you struck down?

Verse 36 (padma.6.13.36)

nīlakaṁṭhena kiṁ tyakto yatastvaṁ patito bhuvi snuṣāmukhaṁ na dṛṣṭaṁ ca mayā putrāvabhāgyayā

'Has Nilakantha forsaken you, that you have fallen to the earth? Unfortunate mother that I am, I have not even seen my daughter-in-law's face.

Verse 37 (padma.6.13.37)

'You never even enjoyed, my child, the pleasures that ordinary people of this world enjoy. O father Heramba, Vighnesha, Lambodara, Gajanana!

Verse 38 (padma.6.13.38)

raṇāṁgaṇe kena putra siddhaiḥ pūjyo nipātitaḥ vāhano'sau kuto vatsa mūṣakaḥ kena hiṁsitaḥ

'My son, worthy of worship even by the Siddhas — who struck you down on that battlefield? Where has your mount gone, my child — who slew your little mouse?'

Verse 39 (padma.6.13.39)

evaṁ vilapatī gaurī śivaṁ prāha suduḥkhitam sākṣādrudro'si deveśa harastvaṁ mā bhayaṁ kuru

Thus lamenting, Gauri, greatly distressed, said to 'Shiva': 'You are Rudra himself, O Lord of gods, you are Hara — have no fear.

Verse 40 (padma.6.13.40)

vṛṣabhaḥ kva gato deva hato jālaṁdhareṇa vai śarajarjaradehasya kiṁ karomi priyaṁ tava

'O God, where has your bull gone? Has he too been slain by Jalandhara? What can I do to please you now, your body so shattered by arrows?'

Verse 41 (padma.6.13.41)

tataḥ śrutvā vaco devyā niśvasyovāca śaṁkaraḥ dīrghaṁ vinihatau putrau vṛthā śocasi kiṁ priye

Then, hearing the Goddess's words, 'Shankara' sighed and said: 'Our two sons are slain forever — why, my beloved, do you grieve in vain?

Verse 42 (padma.6.13.42)

adhunā teṁgasaṁgena devi māṁ trātumarhasi śaṁkarasya vacaḥ śrutvā'samayocitamāturam pratyuvācāṁbikā devaṁ babhāṣe nocitaṁ vacaḥ

'Now, by the union of your very body with mine, O Goddess, you must save me.' Hearing 'Shankara's' words, so improper for the moment and feverish with longing, Ambika replied, and spoke a fitting rebuke —

Verse 43 (padma.6.13.43)

mahāviṣāde patite bhaye ca kṛte samādhau vamane mahājvare śrāddhe prayāṇe guruvṛddhasannidhau ratiṁ budhāḥ śaṁkara varjayaṁti

'In the fall of great despair, in a time of fear, in meditation, in vomiting, in severe fever, at a funeral rite, on a journey, in the presence of elders and teachers — O Shankara, the wise forgo passion in all these.

Verse 44 (padma.6.13.44)

kathaṁ māṁ duḥkhaduḥkhārtāṁ putraśokena pīḍitām mlānāṁ bāṣpaparimlānāṁ saṁprārthayasi cāturām

'How can you ask this of me — stricken with sorrow, afflicted by grief for my sons, wasted and dimmed with tears, and in such distress?'

Verse 45 (padma.6.13.45)

bhavānyā iti vākyāni śrutvā māyāmaheśvaraḥ uvāca svārthamuddiśya gauryārūpeṇa mohitaḥ

Hearing Bhavani's words, that illusion-Maheshvara, enchanted by Gauri's beauty, spoke, aiming only at his own selfish purpose —

Verse 46 (padma.6.13.46)

puruṣasyārtiyuktasya na yacchaṁti ratiṁ striyaḥ tathaiva raurave ghore patiṣyaṁti na saṁśayaḥ

'Women who do not grant pleasure to a man so afflicted shall, without doubt, fall into terrible Raurava hell.

Verse 47 (padma.6.13.47)

gaṇaśūnyaḥ putraśūnyo dhīśūnyo'haṁ varānane sāṁprataṁ gṛhya śūnyo'haṁ sarvaśūnyo'smi bhāmini

'O fair-faced one, I am now without my attendants, without my sons, without even my wits; O lovely one, now, deprived even of my home, I am utterly empty.

Verse 48 (padma.6.13.48)

sujīvitaṁ vihīno'haṁ tvāṁ praṣṭumiha cāgataḥ svaṁ gṛhaṁ tu praviśyāśu tyajāmi prakṛtiṁ svakām

'Bereft even of good life, I have come here to ask you this. Entering my own home, I shall swiftly abandon my very nature.'

Verse 49 (padma.6.13.49)

uttiṣṭha naṁdinsaṁyāvastīrthe bhava puraḥsaraḥ tvaṁ yāhi svecchayā kāṁte prakṛtiṁ svāṁ parityaja

'Rise, Nandin, let us go; go ahead of me toward the sacred ford.' — 'Go as you wish, my beloved — abandon your own nature.'

Verse 50 (padma.6.13.50)

iti māyāmaheśasya vacaḥ śrutvāṁbikā tataḥ dīrghaṁ dadhyo mahāśvāsaṁ śokena ca jaḍīkṛtā

Hearing this speech of the illusion-Maheshvara, Ambika, stupefied by grief, sighed a long, deep sigh.

Verse 51 (padma.6.13.51)

tasyaivaṁ parame kṣobhe kiṁcinnovāca sā kṣaṇam yayā saṁmohitaṁ sarvaṁ jagatsthāvarajaṁgamam saiva saṁmohitā tena na jāne duḥkhamātmanaḥ

In that extreme agitation she said nothing at all for a moment; she by whom the whole world, moving and unmoving, is bewildered, was herself so bewildered by him that she no longer recognized her own sorrow.
