Verse 1 (padma.6.12.1)

nārada uvāca daityasainyaṁ hataṁ dṛṣṭvā gaṇairnaṁdipurogamaiḥ kruddhāḥ śuṁbhādayo daityāḥ samājagmurgaṇānprati

Narada said: Seeing their demon army slain by the attendants led by Nandi, the enraged demons Shumbha and the others advanced against them.

Verse 2 (padma.6.12.2)

tataḥ śuṁbho mahādaityo naṁdinaṁ pratyayudhyata mahākālaṁ niśuṁbho'tha kālo lokeśvaraṁ raṇe

Then the great demon Shumbha fought against Nandin; Nishumbha against Mahakala; and Kala against Lokeshvara in that battle.

Verse 3 (padma.6.12.3)

puṣpadaṁtaṁ śailaromā mālyavaṁtaṁ mahābalaḥ kolāhalo raṇe rājanprāpto māyābalena ca

Pushpadanta clashed with Shailaroma; O king, the mighty Kolahala, through the power of illusion, came to fight Malyavan.

Verse 4 (padma.6.12.4)

caṁḍaṁ bhayānako nāma rāhuḥ skaṁdamadhāvata kūṣmāṁḍaṁ sarparomā ca ghargharo madanaṁ tathā

Chanda faced Bhayanaka; Rahu rushed at Skanda; Kushmanda against Sarparoma, Ghargara against Madana likewise —

Verse 5 (padma.6.12.5)

śubhaṁ ketumukho haṁtuṁ yayau jaṁbho vināyakam hāsaṁ pātālaketuśca bhṛṁgīśaṁ romakaṁṭakaḥ

Ketumukha went to slay Shubha; Jambha faced Vinayaka; Hasa faced Patalaketu; Romakantaka went to fight Bhringisha.

Verse 6 (padma.6.12.6)

yuyudhuḥ koṭiśo rudragaṇā daityāḥ parasparam paśyatorubhayostatra svāminoriti te yudhi

Millions of Rudra's attendants and demons fought one another in that battle, while both their masters looked on.

Verse 7 (padma.6.12.7)

dṛḍhaprahāriṇo jaghnurgaṇā daityāḥ śarairatha naṁdī mumoca tānbāṇānmahāsāro yathā nage

The firm-striking attendants struck the demons with arrows; Nandi loosed his shafts like a great torrent upon a mountain.

Verse 8 (padma.6.12.8)

tataḥ saṁpūrayāmāsa mukhaṁ śuṁbhasya patribhiḥ yathā parṇacayairvāto maṁdarasyeva kaṁdaram

Then he filled Shumbha's face with feathered arrows, as the wind fills a mountain-cave with heaps of leaves.

Verse 9 (padma.6.12.9)

śuṁbho'tha kārmukaṁ tyaktvā rathāttaṁ pratyadhāvata utpāṭya ca giriṁ tena jaghāna hṛdi naṁdinaḥ

Then Shumbha, abandoning his bow, leapt down from his chariot and rushed at him; uprooting a mountain, he struck Nandin in the chest with it.

Verse 10 (padma.6.12.10)

naṁdino hṛdayaṁ bhittvā cūrṇayitvā rathaṁ raṇe papāta bhūmau sa girirvajraṁ prāpya giriṁ yathā

Piercing Nandin's heart and shattering his chariot in that fray, the mountain fell to the ground, like a mountain struck down by the thunderbolt.

Verse 11 (padma.6.12.11)

mūrcchāṁ prāpya kṣaṇātsaṁjñāṁ vegavānsa palāyitaḥ mahākālo niśuṁbhena mudgareṇa hato hṛdi

Falling unconscious, regaining his senses in a moment, he fled swiftly. Nishumbha struck Mahakala in the chest with his mace.

Verse 12 (padma.6.12.12)

āgatya daityaṁ gadayā jaghāna mukuṭopari tatprahāramaciṁtyātha niśuṁbho'pi mahābalaḥ

Coming forward, he struck that demon with his mace upon the crown of his head; unable to bear that unimaginable blow, the mighty Nishumbha —

Verse 13 (padma.6.12.13)

taṁ gṛhītvā caraṇayormahākālaṁ mahābalaḥ bhrāmayitvā karatalāccikṣepa ca nanāda ca

seizing Mahakala by both his feet, that mighty one whirled him and flung him from his palm, and roared.

Verse 14 (padma.6.12.14)

sa tadvaktrānilaṁ pītvā nanāda rudhirāruṇaḥ puṣpadaṁtaḥ śailaromṇā cāhato muṣṭinā mukhe

He, gasping the wind from his own mouth, roared, red with blood. Pushpadanta was struck in the face by a blow of Shailaroma's fist.

Verse 15 (padma.6.12.15)

gadayā śailaromāṇaṁ hatvā bhūmau nyapātayat taṁ dṛṣṭvā patitaṁ bhūmau giriketurmahābalaḥ

He struck Shailaroma down with his mace, felling him to the ground. Seeing him fallen, the mighty Giriketu —

Verse 16 (padma.6.12.16)

puṣpadaṁtaṁ mahābhīmaṁ mudgareṇa vyapothayat puṣpaṁdaṁto'tha khaḍgena giriketoḥ śiro'chinat

struck the terrifying Pushpadanta with his mace; but Pushpadanta then severed Giriketu's head with his sword.

Verse 17 (padma.6.12.17)

gṛhītvā carma khaḍgaṁ ca giriketoradhāvata śirastaṁ prāha kiṁ yāsi māṁ tyaktvā samarārthinam

Taking up shield and sword, that headless Giriketu rushed at Pushpadanta; his own severed head said to him: 'Why do you run, abandoning me, though I still long for the fight?

Verse 18 (padma.6.12.18)

śirohīne ca kāye'sminkiṁ tu dhāvanna lajjase ityukte śirasā tena kabaṁdhena tu pādayoḥ

'With this body now headless, do you feel no shame in running?' Thus addressed, that headless trunk held the head fast in its own feet,

Verse 19 (padma.6.12.19)

vidhṛtaḥ puṣpadaṁtaśca kukṣau tīkṣṇāsinācchinat niścakrāmāsuraḥ kukṣeḥ śataśīrṣo mahābalaḥ

while Pushpadanta cut him open at the belly with his sharp sword; from that belly a mighty hundred-headed demon emerged,

Verse 20 (padma.6.12.20)

dviśatākṣisamāyuktaḥ śatadvayabhujākulaḥ bhramattasya śiro rājankabaṁdhopāṁtamāgamat

equipped with two hundred eyes and two hundred arms; O king, his wandering head then came back near that very headless trunk.

Verse 21 (padma.6.12.21)

tacchiraḥ prāptamālokya puṣpadaṁto'sinācchinat tato bhūkaṁpano nāma jvaro daityo bhayāvahaḥ

Seeing that head arrived, Pushpadanta cut it off too with his sword; then a terrifying fever-demon named Bhukampana —

Verse 22 (padma.6.12.22)

puṣpaṁdaṁtastadā tatra dvābhyāṁ rājanvimarditaḥ jvareṇa tena ca kliṣṭo duḥsahenātiveginā

O king, there Pushpadanta was crushed by both of them together; tormented by that unbearable, most fierce fever,

Verse 23 (padma.6.12.23)

tyaktvā śivagaṇaḥ saṁkhyaṁ kaṁpamāno giriṁ yayau kolāhalo mahādhanvī mālyavaṁtaṁ śaraistribhiḥ

Shiva's attendant, trembling, abandoned the fight and fled to the mountain. The great archer Kolahala, with three arrows,

Verse 24 (padma.6.12.24)

vivyādha skaṁdhayorbhāle mālyavāṁśca tato'suram bāṇāhato mālyavatā śastrairnānāvidhaiḥ śitaiḥ

pierced Malyavan in the shoulders and forehead; wounded by those arrows, Malyavan struck that demon back with various sharp weapons.

Verse 25 (padma.6.12.25)

kolāhalaḥ prahṛtavāndarśayannātmalāghavam so'pi heti vyathāṁ tyaktvā mālyavāṁśca gaṇāgraṇīḥ

Kolahala struck him, displaying his own agility; but Malyavan too, foremost of the attendants, casting off the pain of that blow,

Verse 26 (padma.6.12.26)

giriṁ gṛhītvā tenājau kolāhalamathāhanat niścakrāma jvarastasmājjvalano nāma bhīṣaṇaḥ

seized a mountain and struck Kolahala with it in that battle; from him a terrifying fever named Jvalana then emerged,

Verse 27 (padma.6.12.27)

triśīrṣo navahastaśca navapādo'tipiṁgalaḥ sa jvaro mohayāmāsa mālyavaṁtaṁ svatejasā

three-headed, nine-armed, nine-footed, exceedingly tawny; that fever, by its own power, bewildered Malyavan.

Verse 28 (padma.6.12.28)

mālyavānsamaraṁ tyaktvā parākrāṁto giriṁ yayau caṁḍirbhayānakenājau pāśena hṛdaye hataḥ

Malyavan, though he had shown valor, abandoned the fight and went to the mountain. In that battle, Chandi's attendant was struck in the heart by Bhayanaka's noose,

Verse 29 (padma.6.12.29)

hayo vinirgatastasmātkṣiptaḥ so'pi ca sāgare kārttikeyo raṇe rāhuṁ śitairbāṇaiḥ samāhanat

and from him a horse emerged, which too was cast into the ocean. Kartikeya struck Rahu in battle with sharp arrows,

Verse 30 (padma.6.12.30)

ācchādya śarajālaiśca śīghraṁ śaktiṁ mumoca ha āpataṁtīṁ mahāśaktiṁ jvalaṁtīmiva tejasā

and, covering him with a net of arrows, swiftly loosed his spear; seeing that great spear come flying, blazing as if with its own fire —

Verse 31 (padma.6.12.31)

dṛṣṭvā rāhuḥ khamutpatya karābhyāṁ jagṛhe drutam sa tāṁ śaktiṁ gṛhītvā tu vinadyoccaiḥ punaḥ punaḥ

Rahu leapt into the sky and swiftly caught it with both hands; having caught that spear, he roared aloud again and again.

Verse 32 (padma.6.12.32)

svarbhānuḥ śirasonopi tasya śaktyā jaghāna tam vakṣasyabhihate śaktyā taddehānnirgatā sarit

Svarbhanu struck Kartikeya with that same spear, upon his very head; and when the spear struck his chest, a river burst forth from his body.

Verse 33 (padma.6.12.33)

tayā saṁplāvitaḥ putro mahādevasya saṁyuge kathaṁcitsā nadī ruddhā samaṁ pūro giriṁ yayau

By that, Mahadeva's son was swept along in that battle; somehow that river was checked, and its flood, contained, made its way to the mountain.

Verse 34 (padma.6.12.34)

śrutvārṇavajo jvarataḥ kaṭakakadaṁbasya karkaśaṁ virutam susvaravacanavidagdhaṁ tamapi ca kokilāpatiṁ na sasmāra

The ocean-born one, feverish, hearing the harsh cries of the massed army, though himself skilled in sweet speech, no longer remembered that gentle, cuckoo-like tone.

Verse 35 (padma.6.12.35)

śaraiḥ kiraṁtaṁ dahanamasinā barbaro'vadhīt kūṣmāṁḍo nihato mūrdhni sarparomṇātha muṣṭinā

Barbara slew Dahana with his sword as he scattered his arrows; Kushmanda was struck on the head, and Sarparoma with a fist.

Verse 36 (padma.6.12.36)

pātālaketunā hāso mudgareṇa samāhataḥ tasya dehādviniṣkramya hastī mudgaramābhunak

Hasa was struck by Patalaketu with a mace; from his body an elephant emerged and shattered that mace,

Verse 37 (padma.6.12.37)

śuṁḍāyāṁ muṣṭighātena hataḥ pātālaketunā āyudhairjarjaraṁ cakre bhṛṁgīśaṁ romakaṁṭakaḥ

striking Patalaketu's fist with a blow of its trunk. Romakantaka battered Bhringisha to pieces with weapons.

Verse 38 (padma.6.12.38)

bhṛṁgīśo'pi raṇādbhītastvaranneva giriṁ yayau sahasā dhūmravarṇaśca śubhraḥ ketumukhe'patat

Bhringisha too, terrified by the battle, hastily fled to the mountain. Suddenly, smoke-colored and pale, he fell before Ketumukha.

Verse 39 (padma.6.12.39)

gaṇaṁ gilitavāndaityo mahākāyo mahānanaḥ hāhākāro mahānāsīdgilite ketunā raṇe

That huge-bodied, huge-mouthed demon swallowed the attendant whole; and when he was swallowed by Ketu in that battle, a great cry of woe arose.

Verse 40 (padma.6.12.40)

jṛṁbhasya niśitairbāṇaiśchinnāṁgo'tha vināyakaḥ śuṁḍādaṁḍaṁ paraśunā tasya ciccheda daṁtinaḥ

Then Vinayaka, his limbs cut by Jrimbha's sharp arrows, severed with his axe the very trunk of that demon's elephant-form.

Verse 41 (padma.6.12.41)

jṛṁbhāsuro jaghānātha śaktyā laṁbodarodaram mūṣako'pi śarairbhinnaḥ praviveśa guhāmukham

Then the demon Jrimbha struck Lambodara's belly with his spear; and the mouse too, pierced by arrows, fled into the mouth of a cave.

Verse 42 (padma.6.12.42)

vināyakaḥ prahārārtto vilalāpākulo raṇe hā mātastāta hā bhrātarhā mūṣaka mama priya

Vinayaka, afflicted by the blow, wailed in confusion on the battlefield: 'Alas, mother! Father! Alas, my brother! Alas, my beloved mouse!

Verse 43 (padma.6.12.43)

gaṇeśakraṁditaṁ śrutvā bhagavatyā tayā tadā sametya kūṭādanyasmātpārvatyoktaḥ śivastadā

Hearing Ganesha's cry, the divine Goddess Parvati, coming there from another part of the mountain, then said to Shiva —

Verse 44 (padma.6.12.44)

heraṁbo vadhyate daityaiḥ skaṁdo'pi vinipātitaḥ śiva kiṁ krīḍase śaile rakṣa putrau gaṇānapi

'Heramba is being slain by the demons, and Skanda too has been struck down. O Shiva, you play here upon the mountain — protect your sons and your attendants too.

Verse 45 (padma.6.12.45)

sadā śūlādiśastrāṇāṁ dhṛtānāmadya vai kṣaṇaḥ atha gauryā vacaḥ śrutvā vīrabhadraṁ śivo'bravīt

'Now is truly the moment for the trident and other weapons you ever bear.' Hearing Gauri's words, Shiva said to Virabhadra —

Verse 46 (padma.6.12.46)

vṛṣaḥ sajjīyatāṁ śīghramityukte sa tadākarot babaṁdha mukuṭaṁ tasya śṛṁgayorbhāskaraprabham

'Ready the bull at once.' Thus told, he did so straightaway; he bound upon its two horns a crown radiant as the sun,

Verse 47 (padma.6.12.47)

kaṁṭhe ghaṁṭāśataṁ baddhvā karṇayordarpaṇau dhṛtau skaṁdhe ca kiṁkiṇījālaṁ caraṇe nūpuraṁ mahat

tied a hundred bells about its neck, fastened mirrors to both its ears, a net of little bells on its shoulder, and great anklets on its feet,

Verse 48 (padma.6.12.48)

pucche cāmarasāhasraṁ tasya pāśāṣṭakaṁ mukhe kalyāṇī ca tadā devī śarvapārśve vyasthitā

a thousand chowries on its tail, and eight nooses at its mouth; then the auspicious Goddess herself came and stood beside Sharva.

Verse 49 (padma.6.12.49)

pāśāṣṭakena saṁyuktā tatra khaḍgadharāṁbikā nyastāni sarvaśastrāṇi sa vṛṣaḥ sajjito babhau

Ambika, sword in hand, joined with those eight nooses, was there too; every weapon was set in place — thus that adorned bull shone forth.

Verse 50 (padma.6.12.50)

pārvatyā bhūṣitaḥ so'tha nijayā ghaṁṭamālayā kṛtaṁ ca tilakaṁ devyā proktaḥ satkṛtipūrvakam

Then Parvati adorned him further with her own garland of bells, and the Goddess, marking him with a tilaka, said with due honor —

Verse 51 (padma.6.12.51)

harastvayā na moktavyo vṛṣendra raṇasaṁkaṭe āgaṁtavyamarīnjitvā śaṁbhunā saha saṁgare

'O lord of bulls, you must not abandon Hara amid the danger of battle; you must return from the fight only after the enemies are conquered, together with Shambhu.'

Verse 52 (padma.6.12.52)

iti śrutvā vaco devyā haro vṛṣamathāruhat dhṛtvāyudhasahasraṁ tu nijālaṁkārabhūṣitaḥ raṇaṁ gacchāmi tāṁ prāha pārvatīṁ prati sādaram

Hearing the Goddess's words, Hara mounted the bull; bearing a thousand weapons, adorned with his own ornaments, he said respectfully to Parvati: 'I go to the battlefield.'

Verse 53 (padma.6.12.53)

īśvara uvāca tvaṁ tiṣṭhasi svarūpāṇi ekākinyapi saspṛhā bhāminī durabhiprāyā dānavā hi samāgatāḥ

Ishvara said: 'You remain here yourself — alone, yet watchful. O lovely one, the demons who have come here bear evil intent.

Verse 54 (padma.6.12.54)

tasmāttvayātmanaivātmā rakṣaṇīyo varānane ityuktvā vṛṣabhārūḍho yayau rudro raṇāṁgaṇam

'Therefore, O fair-faced one, you yourself must guard yourself.' Having said this, Rudra, mounted upon his bull, went to the battlefield,

Verse 55 (padma.6.12.55)

triṁśanmahābjasāhasraiḥ pramathānāṁ vṛtaḥ śivaḥ vīrabhadro rathenāśu siṁhayuktena satvaraḥ

surrounded by thirty thousand mighty Pramatha-attendants; Virabhadra, swiftly, upon a chariot yoked with lions,

Verse 56 (padma.6.12.56)

vāmapārśvaṁ maheśasya śūro rakṣati pārthiva maṇibhadro 'śvayuktena rathena paravīrahā

protected, O king, the left flank of that hero Mahesha; and Manibhadra, upon a horse-yoked chariot, slayer of enemy heroes —

Verse 57 (padma.6.12.57)

dakṣiṇaṁ dhūrjaṭeḥ pārśvaṁ saṁrakṣati dhanurddharaḥ tuṁgāduttīrya śaileṁdrādraṇaṁ prāpto gaṇaiḥ saha

guarded, bow in hand, the right flank of Dhurjati; descending from that lofty king of mountains, they reached the battlefield together with the attendants.

Verse 58 (padma.6.12.58)

dṛṣṭvā jagarjuste daityā maheśānaṁ vṛṣasthitam tato mahānninādo'bhūddaityapramathasenayoḥ

Seeing Mahesha thus mounted on his bull, those demons roared; then a great uproar arose between the demon and Pramatha armies.

Verse 59 (padma.6.12.59)

tayorabhūnmitho rājansaṁpramardo'tha dāruṇaḥ tato naṁdī mahākālaḥ kālaskaṁdau mahābalaḥ

O king, a terrible mutual clash then broke out between them; then Nandi, Mahakala, Kala, and mighty Skanda,

Verse 60 (padma.6.12.60)

mālyavānpuṣpadaṁtaśca vṛṣalī svarṇadaṁtikaḥ caṁḍīśo madanaścaṁḍaḥ kūṣmāṁḍo guptalomakaḥ

Malyavan, Pushpadanta, Vrishali, Svarnadantika, Chandisha, Madana, Chanda, Kushmanda, Guptalomaka —

Verse 61 (padma.6.12.61)

ye ye pūrvaṁ raṇe bhagnāḥ prāptāste raṇasaṁkaṭam śivasya purato daityā yuyudhuste mahābalāḥ

all who had earlier been routed in battle now returned to that dangerous fray; and before Shiva, those mighty demons fought on.

Verse 62 (padma.6.12.62)

gaṇadānavayodhānāṁ saṁgrāmo'bhūdbhayāvahaḥ tato gaṇānāṁ vidrāvya sainyaṁ te ca mahābalāḥ

A terrifying battle broke out between the attendants and the demon-warriors; then, having routed the attendants' army, those mighty ones —

Verse 63 (padma.6.12.63)

raṇe saṁveṣṭayāmāsuḥ śaraughaiḥ sarvataḥ śivam śūlaiḥ kuṁtairgadābhiśca mudgaraiḥ parighairapi

surrounded Shiva on every side in that battle with a hail of arrows, and with tridents, spears, maces, clubs, and iron bars —

Verse 64 (padma.6.12.64)

iṁdriyāṇi yathātmānaṁ viṣayaiḥ paṁcapaṁcabhiḥ jaghānātha raṇe daityāñchaṁbhurbāṇaiḥ sudāruṇaiḥ yathāśu māghaḥ pāpāni haṁti snānena tatkṣaṇāt

as the senses beset the soul with their five times five objects. Then Shambhu struck down the demons in battle with his most terrible arrows — as swiftly as the month of Magha destroys sins through a single bath, in that very instant.
