The Glory of Chandaneshvara

Verse 1 (padma.6.149.1)

महादेव उवाच। तीर्थादस्मात्परं तीर्थं मालार्कांतरतः स्थितम् । चंदनेश्वरमागच्छेदामोदस्थानमुत्तमम्

mahādeva uvāca tīrthādasmātparaṃ tīrthaṃ mālārkāṃtarataḥ sthitam caṃdaneśvaramāgacchedāmodasthānamuttamam

Mahadeva said: Beyond this tirtha lies another tirtha, situated within the region of Malarka. One should go there, to Chandaneshvara, the supreme abode of joy.

Verse 2 (padma.6.149.2)

दुःशासनस्य रुधिरं पीत्वा भीमो महाबलः । प्रतिज्ञामात्मनः सर्वां पूरयित्वा सुदारुणाम्

duḥśāsanasya rudhiraṃ pītvā bhīmo mahābalaḥ pratijñāmātmanaḥ sarvāṃ pūrayitvā sudāruṇām

Having drunk the blood of Duhshasana, the mighty Bhima, having wholly fulfilled his own terrible vow,

Verse 3 (padma.6.149.3)

कराभ्यां रुधिराक्ताभ्यां द्रौपद्याः केशबंधनम् । कृत्वा दत्त्वा द्विजातिभ्यो तीर्थयात्रां ततोऽगमत्

karābhyāṃ rudhirāktābhyāṃ draupadyāḥ keśabaṃdhanam kṛtvā dattvā dvijātibhyo tīrthayātrāṃ tato'gamat

with his two blood-soaked hands bound up Draupadi's hair, and having given gifts to the twice-born, then set out on pilgrimage.

Verse 4 (padma.6.149.4)

साभ्रमत्यास्तटे रम्ये गतो वै भ्रातृभिः सह । आनीतः साभ्रमत्यां यः स्वर्गाच्चंदनपादपः

sābhramatyāstaṭe ramye gato vai bhrātṛbhiḥ saha ānītaḥ sābhramatyāṃ yaḥ svargāccaṃdanapādapaḥ

He went, together with his brothers, to the lovely bank of the Sabarmati, where there stood a sandalwood tree that had been brought down from heaven.

Verse 5 (padma.6.149.5)

स तु लिंगतया जातः पुण्यतीर्थप्रभावतः । तत्र स्नात्वा च पीत्वा च कृत्वा वै पितृतर्पणम्

sa tu liṃgatayā jātaḥ puṇyatīrthaprabhāvataḥ tatra snātvā ca pītvā ca kṛtvā vai pitṛtarpaṇam

That tree, by the power of the sacred tirtha, was transformed into a linga. Having bathed there, drunk of its water, and performed the ancestral offering,

Verse 6 (padma.6.149.6)

न नरो निरयं गच्छेद्रुद्रलोकमवाप्नुयात् । चंदनेशं ततो दृष्ट्वा विश्वेशं लोकशंकरम्

na naro nirayaṃ gacchedrudralokamavāpnuyāt caṃdaneśaṃ tato dṛṣṭvā viśveśaṃ lokaśaṃkaram

a man does not go to hell but attains the world of Rudra. Then, having beheld Chandanesha, the Lord of All, the bringer of well-being to the world,

Verse 7 (padma.6.149.7)

पूजयेच्च यथाशक्त्या यत्र गत्वा न शोचति । यत्र कैवर्तको राजा पूजां कृत्वा ह्यनेकशः

pūjayecca yathāśaktyā yatra gatvā na śocati yatra kaivartako rājā pūjāṃ kṛtvā hyanekaśaḥ

one should worship him according to one's ability; going there, one does not grieve. There, King Kaivartaka, having performed worship many times over,

Verse 8 (padma.6.149.8)

स गतः शिवलोकं तं यत्र गत्वा न शोचति । मज्जंति ऋषयो यत्र यत्र देवः सनातनः

sa gataḥ śivalokaṃ taṃ yatra gatvā na śocati majjaṃti ṛṣayo yatra yatra devaḥ sanātanaḥ

attained the world of Shiva — going where one does not grieve, where the sages immerse themselves, where the eternal God,

Verse 9 (padma.6.149.9)

साक्षाद्विष्णुः परमात्मा नित्यं तिष्ठति भूतिदः । इयं साभ्रमती धन्या धन्यो विश्वेश्वरः प्रभुः

sākṣādviṣṇuḥ paramātmā nityaṃ tiṣṭhati bhūtidaḥ iyaṃ sābhramatī dhanyā dhanyo viśveśvaraḥ prabhuḥ

Vishnu himself, the Supreme Soul, the bestower of prosperity, ever dwells. Blessed is this Sabarmati, and blessed is Lord Vishveshvara.

Verse 10 (padma.6.149.10)

यत्र तीर्थान्यनेकानि जातानि भुवि पार्वति । अत्र चामर्दकीपुण्यैः फलैर्नानाविधैः शुभैः

yatra tīrthānyanekāni jātāni bhuvi pārvati atra cāmardakīpuṇyaiḥ phalairnānāvidhaiḥ śubhaiḥ

O Parvati, where many tirthas have arisen on this earth — and here, through the merits of Amardaki, together with manifold auspicious fruits,

Verse 11 (padma.6.149.11)

कर्त्तव्यमर्घदानं च विधिना तत्र सुंदरि

karttavyamarghadānaṃ ca vidhinā tatra suṃdari

O beautiful one, the offering of arghya should be duly made there.
