Uttara Khanda · Chapter 151
The Glory of Dhavaleshvara (Indra's Tirtha)
Verse 1 (padma.6.151.1)
mahādeva uvāca asmāttīrthātparaṃ tīrthaṃ iṃdragrāmamiti smṛtam yatra snātvā purā śakro vimukto ghorakilbiṣāt
Mahadeva said: Beyond this tirtha is another tirtha known as Indragrama, where formerly Shakra (Indra), by bathing, was released from a terrible sin.
Verse 2 (padma.6.151.2)
pārvatyuvāca keneha karmaṇā śakraḥ prāptavānghorakilbiṣam vipāpmā ca kathaṃ so'bhūditi vistarato vada
Parvati said: By what deed did Shakra incur that terrible sin here, and how did he become free of it? Tell me in full.
Verse 3 (padma.6.151.3)
mahādeva uvāca iṃdraḥ sureśvaraḥ pūrvaṃ namuciścāsureśvaraḥ aśastravadhamanyo'nya samayaṃ tau pracakratuḥ
Mahadeva said: Formerly Indra, lord of the gods, and Namuchi, lord of the demons, made a mutual pact that neither would slay the other by any weapon.
Verse 4 (padma.6.151.4)
atheṃdrastu nabhovāṇīnirdeśānnamuciṃ tadā jaghāna phenamādāya brahmahatyā tadā'bhavat
Then Indra, at the direction of a voice from the sky, slew Namuchi by taking up foam as his weapon -- and thereby the sin of killing a brahmin came upon him.
Verse 5 (padma.6.151.5)
papraccha ca guruṃ śakraḥ pāpanirnāśakāraṇam bṛhaspaterathādeśātsābhrāmatyuttare taṭe
Shakra then asked his guru for the means of destroying that sin, and by the direction of Brihaspati, on the northern bank of the Sabarmati,
Verse 6 (padma.6.151.6)
asminsthāne samāgatya sthānaṃ cakre sureśvaraḥ tasyeha snānamātreṇa gatapāpasya tatkṣaṇāt
the lord of the gods came to this very spot and made it his dwelling. By bathing here alone, his sin departed that very instant,
Verse 7 (padma.6.151.7)
pūrṇeṃdudhavalākāṃtiḥ śarīre samajāyata dhavaleśvaramīśānaṃ sthāpayāmāsa vṛtrahā
and a radiance white as the full moon appeared upon his body. The slayer of Vritra then established the Lord under the name Dhavaleshvara.
Verse 8 (padma.6.151.8)
iṃdra nāmnā ca talliṃgaṃ viśrutaṃ pṛthivītale pūrṇimāsyāṃ tathā darśe saṃkrāṃtau grahaṇe tathā
That linga became renowned on earth under Indra's name. On the full-moon day, the new-moon day, at the solstice, and at an eclipse,
Verse 9 (padma.6.151.9)
śrāddhe kṛte pitṝṇāṃ tu tṛptirdvādaśavārṣikī dhavaleśvaramāsādya yaḥ kuryādviprabhojanam
when the shraddha rite is performed for the ancestors, their satisfaction lasts twelve years. Whoever, having come to Dhavaleshvara, feeds a brahmin --
Verse 10 (padma.6.151.10)
ekasminbhojite vipre sahasraṃ bhojitaṃ bhavet hiraṇyabhūmivāsāṃsi dātavyāni svaśaktitaḥ
by feeding one brahmin, it is as though a thousand were fed. Gold, land, and garments should be given according to one's ability.
Verse 11 (padma.6.151.11)
śuklā gau brāhmaṇe deyā savatsā ca payasvinī atrāgatya tu yo vipro rudrajāpyādikaṃ caret
A white, milk-yielding cow with her calf should be given to a brahmin. Whatever brahmin, having come here, performs the repetition of Rudra's name and the like --
Verse 12 (padma.6.151.12)
tatkṛtaṃ koṭiguṇitaṃ śrīmaheśaprasādataḥ atra tīrthe naro yastu upavāsādikaṃ caret
that act is multiplied a hundred-million-fold by the grace of Shri Mahesha. Whatever man observes fasting and the like at this tirtha --
Verse 13 (padma.6.151.13)
he indeed becomes rich in the fulfilment of every desire, without doubt. Whoever, bringing a bilva leaf, worships that Lord --
Verse 14 (padma.6.151.14)
dharmamarthaṃ ca kāmaṃ ca labhate mānavo bhuvi somavāre viśeṣeṇa ye gacchaṃti narottamāḥ
such a man obtains dharma, artha, and kama on this earth. Those best of men who go there especially on a Monday --
Verse 15 (padma.6.151.15)
teṣāṃ rogaṃ tathā doṣaṃ śamayeddhavaleśvaraḥ ravau vā'tha viśeṣeṇa arcanaṃ kurute yadā
for them Dhavaleshvara pacifies disease and affliction. And when one performs worship especially on a Sunday --
Verse 16 (padma.6.151.16)
teṣāṃ mahimā tu bho devi na jñātaḥ karhicinmayā dūrvayā cārkapuṣpairvā kalhāraiḥ kamalairdalaiḥ
O goddess, even I have never fully known the greatness of that. With durva grass, or with arka flowers, with kalhara lotuses, with lotus petals,
Verse 17 (padma.6.151.17)
pūjanaṃ kurvate ye'tra te narāḥ puṇyabhāginaḥ śvetārkapuṣpamānīya dhavaleśaṃ prapūjya tu
those men who worship here become sharers in merit. Bringing a white arka flower and duly worshipping Dhavalesha,
Verse 18 (padma.6.151.18)
vāṃcchitaṃ labhate nityaṃ dhavaleśaprasādataḥ kṛte vai nīlakaṃṭhastu sarveṣāṃ śaṃkaraḥ sadā
one always obtains one's desire through the grace of Dhavalesha. In the Krita age he was known to all, ever, as blue-throated Shankara;
Verse 19 (padma.6.151.19)
tretāyuge sa vikhyāto haro vai bhagavānprabhuḥ dvāpare śarvasaṃjñastu kalau vai dhavaleśvaraḥ
in the Treta age that same Lord Hara was renowned; in the Dvapara age he bore the name Sharva; and in the Kali age he is Dhavaleshvara.
Verse 20 (padma.6.151.20)
atrārthe yatpurāvṛttaṃ tacchṛṇuṣva sureśvari naṃdirnāma purā vaiśya iṃdragrāme samāvasat
Hear now, O goddess of the gods, an old tale connected with this place. Formerly a vaishya named Nandi dwelt in Indragrama.
Verse 21 (padma.6.151.21)
śivadhyānaparo bhūtvā śivapūjāṃ cakāra saḥ nityaṃ tapovanasthaṃ hi liṃgaṃ dhavalasaṃjñakam
Devoted to meditation on Shiva, he performed worship of Shiva daily, to the linga called Dhavala, standing in a grove of penance,
Verse 22 (padma.6.151.22)
uṣasyuṣasi cotthāya pratyahaṃ śivavallabhaḥ naṃdī liṃgārcanarato babhūvātiśayena hi
rising at dawn each day, that beloved devotee of Shiva. Nandi became exceedingly devoted to the worship of the linga,
Verse 23 (padma.6.151.23)
yathāśāstreṇa vidhinā puṣpārcanaparo'bhavat ekadā mṛgayālubdhaḥ kirāto bhūtahiṃsakaḥ
devoted to the offering of flowers according to the rule of scripture. One day a Kirata, a hunter greedy for the chase, one who harmed living beings,
Verse 24 (padma.6.151.24)
pāpī pāpasamācāraścaransābhramatī taṭe aneka śvāpadākīrṇe hanyamāno mṛgānśaraiḥ
sinful and of sinful conduct, was roaming the bank of the Sabarmati, thronged with many wild beasts, striking down deer with his arrows.
Verse 25 (padma.6.151.25)
evaṃ vicaramāṇo'sau kirāto bhūtahiṃsakaḥ yadṛcchayāgatastatra yatra liṃgaṃ supūjitam
Thus wandering, that hunter who harmed living beings came by chance to the place where the well-worshipped linga stood --
Verse 26 (padma.6.151.26)
dhavaleśvaravikhyātaṃ anekāścaryamaṃḍitam dṛṣṭaṃ supūjitaṃ liṃgaṃ nānāpuṣpaiḥ phalaistathā
renowned as Dhavaleshvara, adorned with many wonders. He saw that well-worshipped linga, adorned with various flowers and fruits.
Verse 27 (padma.6.151.27)
evaṃ liṃgaṃ samāliṃgya gataḥ sābhramatītaṭe tatra pītvā payaḥ so'tha mukhaṃ gaṃḍūṣapūritam
Having thus embraced the linga, he went to the bank of the Sabarmati. There he drank water, filling his mouth with a mouthful,
Verse 28 (padma.6.151.28)
kṛtvā caikenahastena mṛgamāṃsaṃ samudvahan kareṇaikena pūjārthaṃ bilvapatrāṇi vai dadhat
and carrying deer's flesh in one hand, while holding bilva leaves in the other for worship,
Verse 29 (padma.6.151.29)
śīghramāgatya liṃgāṃte padā pūjāṃ samāhanat puṣpāṇi tāni sarvāṇi vidhūtāni itastataḥ
he came quickly to the linga and, with his foot, struck away the existing worship -- all those flowers were scattered here and there.
Verse 30 (padma.6.151.30)
snāpanaṃ tasya liṃgasya kṛtaṃ gaṃḍūṣavāriṇā kareṇaikena pūjārthaṃ bilvapatrāṇi so'rpayat
He bathed that linga with the water from his mouthful, and with one hand offered the bilva leaves for worship;
Verse 31 (padma.6.151.31)
dvitīyena kareṇaiva mṛgamāṃsaṃ samarpayat daṃḍapraṇāmasaṃyuktaḥ saṃkalpaṃ manasā'karot
with the other hand he offered the deer's flesh. Prostrating himself full-length in homage, he made this resolve in his mind:
Verse 32 (padma.6.151.32)
adyaprabhṛti pūjāṃ vai kariṣyāmi prayatnataḥ tvaṃ me svāmī ca bhakto'haṃ adyaprabhṛti śaṃkara
'From this day forward I shall perform this worship with diligence. You are my Lord, and I am your devotee, from this day forth, O Shankara.'
Verse 33 (padma.6.151.33)
evaṃ niyamavānbhūtvā kirāto gṛhamāgamat tathā prabhātasamaye devāyatanamāgataḥ
Having thus taken this vow, the Kirata went home. And, as usual, at daybreak Nandi came to the temple of the god.
Verse 34 (padma.6.151.34)
naṃdī dadarśa taṃ sarvaṃ kirātena ca yatkṛtam avyavasthaṃ ca taṃ dṛṃṣṭvā amedhyaṃ śivasannidhau
Nandi saw all of it -- everything the Kirata had done -- and, seeing that disorder and that impurity in Shiva's presence,
Verse 35 (padma.6.151.35)
vidhūtāni ca sarvāṇi hiṃsakena durātmanā ciṃtāyuktobhavannaṃdī jātaṃ kiṃ citramadya me
all scattered by that evil-souled hunter, Nandi became filled with anxiety: 'What strange thing has befallen me today?'
Verse 36 (padma.6.151.36)
kathitāni ca vighnāni śivapūjāratasya hi upasthitāni tānyeva mama bhāgyaviparyayāt
'The obstacles spoken of for one devoted to Shiva's worship -- those very obstacles have come upon me now, through the reversal of my fortune.'
Verse 37 (padma.6.151.37)
evaṃ vimṛśya suciraṃ prakṣālya śivamaṃdiram yathāgatena mārgeṇa naṃdī svagṛhamāgamat
Having pondered thus for a long while, and having cleansed Shiva's shrine, Nandi returned home by the way he had come.
Verse 38 (padma.6.151.38)
tato naṃdinamālakṣya purodhā gatamānasam abravīdvacanaṃ taṃ tu kasmāttvaṃ gatamānasaḥ
Then the family priest, noticing Nandi's troubled mind, spoke to him: 'Why is your mind so distressed?'
Verse 39 (padma.6.151.39)
purohitaṃ prati tadā naṃdī vacanamabravīt adya dṛṣṭaṃ mayā vipra amedhyaṃ śivasannidhau
Nandi then said to the priest: 'Today, O brahmin, I saw an impurity in the presence of Shiva.
Verse 40 (padma.6.151.40)
kenedaṃ kāritaṃ tatra na jānāmīha kiṃcana tataḥ purodhā vacanaṃ naṃdinaṃ cābravīttathā
'By whom this was done there, I know nothing at all.' Then the priest spoke these words to Nandi:
Verse 41 (padma.6.151.41)
yena viskhalitaṃ tatra puṣpādīnāṃ prapūjanam so'pi mūḍho na saṃdehaḥ kāryākāryeṣu maṃdadhīḥ
'Whoever it was that disturbed the offering of flowers there must indeed be a fool, without doubt -- dull-witted about what should and should not be done.'
Verse 42 (padma.6.151.42)
tasmācciṃtā na kartavyā tvayā punarapi prabho prabhāte ca mayā sārddhaṃ gamyatāṃ tacchivālayam
'Therefore you need not worry any further about this, my lord. At dawn, come together with me to that shrine of Shiva --'
Verse 43 (padma.6.151.43)
nirīkṣaṇārthaṃ duṣṭasya tasya daṃḍaṃkaromyaham etacchrutvā tu vacanaṃ naṃdī tasya purodhasaḥ
'-- to watch, and I shall punish that wrongdoer.' Having heard these words of his priest, Nandi
Verse 44 (padma.6.151.44)
āsthitaḥ svagṛhe naktaṃ dūyamānena cetasā tasyāṃ rātryāṃ vyatītāyāṃ āhūya ca purodhasam
remained at home that night with a troubled heart. When that night had passed, he summoned the priest,
Verse 45 (padma.6.151.45)
gataḥ śivālayaṃ naṃdī samaṃtena mahātmanā prakṣālya pūjanaṃ kṛtvā nānāratnaparicchadam
and Nandi went to Shiva's shrine together with that great-souled priest. Having cleansed it, he performed worship with an array of various jewels,
Verse 46 (padma.6.151.46)
paṃcopacārasaṃyuktaṃ kṛtvā vai brāhmaṇaiḥ saha evaṃ yāmadvayaṃ jātaṃ stūyamānasya naṃdinaḥ
with the five traditional offerings, together with brahmins. Thus two watches of the night passed while Nandi was engaged in praise,
Verse 47 (padma.6.151.47)
āyāto'sau mahākālastathārūpo mahābalaḥ kālarūpo mahāraudro dhanuṣpāṇiḥ pratāpavān
when there arrived that same mighty being of terrible form, in the shape of Time, exceedingly fierce, bow in hand, majestic --
Verse 48 (padma.6.151.48)
taṃ dṛṣṭvā bhayasaṃtrasto naṃdī tatra nyalīyata purodhāścaiva sahasā bhayabhītastadābhavat
seeing him, Nandi, terrified with fear, hid himself there; and the priest too, suddenly, became struck with fear.
Verse 49 (padma.6.151.49)
kirātena kṛtaṃ tatra yathāpūrvamaviskhalan tāṃ pūjāṃ sa padāhṛtya bilvapatraṃ samarpayat
There, exactly as before, without deviation, done by the Kirata -- he trampled that worship underfoot and offered the bilva leaf,
Verse 50 (padma.6.151.50)
naivedyena palenaiva kirātaḥ śivamārcayat daṃḍavatpatito bhūmau utthāya svagṛhaṃ gataḥ
and with an offering of flesh alone the Kirata worshipped Shiva. He fell prostrate to the ground like a staff, then rose and went home.
Verse 51 (padma.6.151.51)
taṃ dṛṣṭvā mahadāścaryaṃ ciṃtayāmāsa vai ciram purodhasā tadā naṃdī saha vyākulacetasā
Seeing this great wonder, Nandi, his mind now bewildered, pondered long together with the priest.
Verse 52 (padma.6.151.52)
tena pṛṣṭāstadā viprāḥ kathyatāṃ ca yathātatham saṃpradhārya tataḥ sarve militvā dharmaśāstrataḥ
He then asked the brahmins to explain the matter exactly as it was. Deliberating, all of them together, according to the scriptures of dharma,
Verse 53 (padma.6.151.53)
ūcuḥ sarve tadā viprā naṃdinaṃ jātaśaṃkitam īśavighnaṃ samutpannaṃ durnivāryaṃ surairapi
all the brahmins then said to Nandi, who had grown suspicious: 'An obstruction to the Lord's worship has arisen, one that even the gods could not easily remove.'
Verse 54 (padma.6.151.54)
tasmādānaya liṃgaṃ tvaṃ svagṛhe vaiśyasattama tatheti matvā'sau naṃdī śivasyotpāṭanaṃ mahat
'Therefore, best of vaishyas, bring the linga into your own house.' Agreeing, 'so be it,' Nandi then undertook the great task of uprooting Shiva (the linga),
Verse 55 (padma.6.151.55)
kṛtvā svagṛhamānīya pratiṣṭhāpya yathāvidhi suvarṇapīṭhikāṃ kṛtvā navaraṃbhāsuśobhitām
and, having brought it to his own house, installed it there duly, making for it a golden pedestal beautifully adorned with fresh plantain decorations.
Verse 56 (padma.6.151.56)
upāhārairanekaiśca pūjayāmāsa vai tadā athāparedyurāyātaḥ kirātaḥ śivamaṃdiram
He then worshipped it with many offerings. But the next day the Kirata came again to Shiva's shrine --
Verse 57 (padma.6.151.57)
yāvadvilokayāmāsa liṃgamaiśaṃ na dṛṣṭavān maunaṃ vihāya sahasā sākrośamidamabravīt
and as he looked for the Lord's linga, he did not find it. Abandoning his silence, he suddenly cried out these words in anguish:
Verse 58 (padma.6.151.58)
he śaṃbho kva gato'si tvaṃ darśayātmānamadya vai yadi no darśanaṃ heyaṃ tyakṣyāmyadya kalevaram
'O Shambhu, where have you gone? Show yourself to me today! If you do not show yourself, I shall this day give up my body!'
Verse 59 (padma.6.151.59)
he śaṃbho he jagannātha tripurāṃtaka śaṃkara herudra he mahādeva darśayātmānamātmanā
'O Shambhu! O Lord of the universe! O Shankara, destroyer of Tripura! O Rudra! O Mahadeva! Show your own self to me!'
Verse 60 (padma.6.151.60)
evaṃ sākṣepamadhurairvākyaiḥ kṣiptvā sadāśivam kirāto'sau kṣurikayā dhīro vai jaṭharaṃ svakam
Having thus reproached Sadashiva with words both bitter and sweet, that resolute Kirata, with his knife, tore open his own belly --
