Uttara Khanda · Chapter 156
The Glory of Chandreshvara
Verse 1 (padma.6.156.1)
mahādeva uvāca dugdheśvarasya pūrve tu tīrthaṃ paramapāvanam caṃdrabhāgeti vai nāmnā nadī yatra tu saṃgatā
Mahadeva said: East of Dugdheshvara is a most purifying tirtha, where the river named Chandrabhaga joins the Sabarmati.
Verse 2 (padma.6.156.2)
tatra caṃdreśvaro devo nityaṃ tiṣṭhati puṇyadaḥ yo haraḥ sarvadā vyāpī lokānāṃ sukhado mahān
There the god Chandreshvara, the giver of merit, ever abides -- that Hara who ever pervades all things, the great bestower of happiness to the worlds.
Verse 3 (padma.6.156.3)
atra snānaṃ prakurvaṃti dhyānaṃ kurvaṃti nityaśaḥ tatphalaṃ prāpnuyuste vai sābhramatyāṃ śivārcanāt
Those who bathe here and constantly practice meditation obtain that fruit through worship of Shiva at the Sabarmati.
Verse 4 (padma.6.156.4)
somenātra tapastaptaṃ kālaṃ bahutaraṃ kila tasmāccandreśvaro nāma sthāpito vai maheśvaraḥ
Here Soma, the Moon, performed austerity for a very long time indeed; therefore Maheshvara was established here under the name Chandreshvara.
Verse 5 (padma.6.156.5)
śukreṇāpi tapastaptaṃ candrabhāgā samīpataḥ atastīrthādhikaṃ tīrthaṃ pāvanaṃ sarvadā bhuvi
Shukra too performed austerity near the Chandrabhaga; therefore this tirtha, ever purifying, surpasses other tirthas on earth.
Verse 6 (padma.6.156.6)
kalau guptaṃ tu ṛṣiṇā kāritaṃ vai sureśvari yatra hemamayaṃ ligaṃ dṛśyate nātra saṃśayaḥ
In the Kali age it was made hidden by a sage, O queen of the gods; there a golden linga is seen -- there is no doubt of this.
Verse 7 (padma.6.156.7)
atra snātvā ca pītvā ca kṛtvā vai śivapūjanam ye narāḥ saṃgamiṣyaṃti dharmānarthāṃllabhaṃti te
Whatever men bathe here, drink of its water, and perform the worship of Shiva, and come together here, obtain dharma and artha.
Verse 8 (padma.6.156.8)
vṛṣotsargādikaṃ karma ye kurvaṃti viśeṣataḥ bhuktvā svargapadaṃ te vai paścādyāṃti harālayam
Those who especially perform rites such as the releasing of a bull, having enjoyed the state of heaven, afterward go to the abode of Hara.
Verse 9 (padma.6.156.9)
snānārthe pratyahaṃ devi caṃdrabhāgā samīpataḥ āgamiṣyaṃti ye lokāste jñeyāḥ puṇyabhāginaḥ
O goddess, whatever people come daily to the vicinity of the Chandrabhaga for bathing are to be known as sharers in merit.
Verse 10 (padma.6.156.10)
gatvā parataṭe ye vai hyarcayaṃti ca taṃ śivam caṃdreśvareti nāmānaṃ śrīharaṃ pāpakṛṃtanam
Those who go to the far bank and worship that Shiva, under the name Chandreshvara, the glorious Hara who cuts away sin --
Verse 11 (padma.6.156.11)
atra gatvā viśeṣeṇa rudrajāpyādikaṃ tathā ye kurvaṃti naraśreṣṭhāste jñeyāḥ śivarūpiṇaḥ
those best of men who come here and especially perform the repetition of Rudra's name and the like are to be known as themselves of Shiva's own form.
Verse 12 (padma.6.156.12)
sarvadā tu suraśreṣṭha yatra snānaṃ prakurvate te narā viṣṇurūpāṇi vijñeyā nātra saṃśayaḥ
O best of gods, whatever men ever bathe here are to be known as of the very form of Vishnu -- there is no doubt of this.
Verse 13 (padma.6.156.13)
ye'tra śrāddhaṃ prakurvaṃti tilapiṃḍena vā punaḥ te'pi viṣṇupadaṃ yāṃti piṃḍadānaprabhāvataḥ
Those who perform shraddha here, or again with rice-balls of sesame, they too go to the state of Vishnu through the power of that offering.
Verse 14 (padma.6.156.14)
atra dānaṃ prakarttavyaṃ snānaṃ vai vidhipūrvakam yatra snātvā tu mucyaṃte brahmahatyādikilbiṣāt
Here gift-giving should be performed, and bathing according to due rite; bathing here, one is freed even from the sin of killing a brahmin.
Verse 15 (padma.6.156.15)
taṭesminye viśeṣeṇa vaṭaṃ cāropayaṃti te mṛtāḥ śivapadaṃ yāṃti yāvaccaṃdra divākarau
Those who especially plant a banyan tree on this bank, upon death attain the state of Shiva, for as long as the moon and sun endure.
