Uttara Khanda · Chapter 157
The Glory of Pippalada Tirtha
Verse 1 (padma.6.157.1)
mahādeva uvāca dugdheśvarasamīpe tu tīrthaṃ cātīvapāvanam ramyaṃ tatpippalādasya nāmnā vai prathitaṃ bhuvi
Mahadeva said: Near Dugdheshvara is a most exceedingly purifying and delightful tirtha, renowned on earth by the name of Pippalada.
Verse 2 (padma.6.157.2)
yatra kṛtvā tapaḥ pūrvaṃ māturvacanato muniḥ utpādayāmāsa kṛtyāṃ vaḍavānalasammitām
There, formerly, performing austerity at his mother's word, the sage brought forth a Kritya, a sorcery-being, resembling the submarine fire itself.
Verse 3 (padma.6.157.3)
piturānṛṇyamanvicchandadhīcasya mahātmanaḥ tatra snātvā ca pītvā ca brahmahatyāṃ vyapohati
seeking thereby to discharge his debt to his father, the great-souled Dadhichi. Whoever bathes there and drinks of its water dispels even the sin of killing a brahmin.
Verse 4 (padma.6.157.4)
sābhramatyāstaṭe guptaṃ pippalādaṃ sureśvaram tatra snātvā tu bho devi muktibhāgī bhavennaraḥ
Hidden on the bank of the Sabarmati is Pippalada, the lord of the gods; bathing there, O goddess, a man becomes a partaker of liberation.
Verse 5 (padma.6.157.5)
āropaṇaṃ pippalānāṃ karttavyaṃ vidhipūrvakam kṛte sati mahādevi mucyate karmabaṃdhanāt
The planting of pipal trees should be performed there according to due rite; when this is done, O great goddess, one is released from the bondage of karma.
Verse 6 (padma.6.157.6)
pārvatyuuvāca kimarthaṃ sā tu kṛtyā vai utpannā tāṃ nibodhaya tayā vai kṛtyayā pūrvaṃ kiṃ kṛtaṃ vada me prabho
Parvati said: For what purpose was that Kritya brought forth? Please explain this to me. What did that Kritya formerly accomplish -- tell me, O lord,
Verse 7 (padma.6.157.7)
yena putreṇa sā nītā piturānṛṇyakāraṇāt
-- through which the son discharged the debt owed to his father.
Verse 8 (padma.6.157.8)
mahādeva uvāca dādhīco ṛṣivaryo'sau hyāgatastapakāraṇāt atra tena mahattaptamṛṣiṇā paramātmanā
Mahadeva said: That foremost of sages, the son of Dadhichi, came here for the sake of austerity; here great penance was performed by that sage, wholly absorbed in the Supreme Soul.
Verse 9 (padma.6.157.9)
tatra kolāsuro nāma vighnārthaṃ vai samāgataḥ tena vighnaṃ bahutaraṃ kṛtaṃ vai nātra saṃśayaḥ
There a demon named Kola came for the purpose of obstruction, and he caused very many obstacles indeed -- there is no doubt of this.
Verse 10 (padma.6.157.10)
taddṛṣṭaṃ tu suputreṇa kahoḍena ca dhīmatā kṛtyā hyutpāditā tatra hananārthaṃ sureśvari
Seeing this, that excellent and wise son, Kahoda, then, O queen of the gods, brought forth a Kritya there for the purpose of slaying the demon.
Verse 11 (padma.6.157.11)
tayā vai nihato daityaḥ kolo nāma mahāsuraḥ tasmāttīrthaṃ mahajjātaṃ kalau guptaṃ tu pārvati
By her, that great demon named Kola was slain. From this a great tirtha arose -- but, O Parvati, it remains hidden in the Kali age.
