Uttara Khanda · Chapter 16
Jalandhara Abandons His Illusory Form
Verse 1 (padma.6.16.1)
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca kathaṁ jālaṁdharo gaurīṁ hararūpadharo mune dṛṣṭvā cakāra kiṁ tatra tanme kathaya vistarāt
Yudhishthira said: O sage, how did Jalandhara, having taken Hara's form, behave upon seeing Gauri? What did he do there? Tell me that in detail.
Verse 2 (padma.6.16.2)
nārada uvāca yadā māyāśivastatra prārthayadgirijāṁ prati tataḥ sā cukṣubhe rājankiṁcinnovāca taṁ prati
Narada said: When that illusion-Shiva there made his plea to Girija, then, O king, she grew agitated, but said nothing at all in reply.
Verse 3 (padma.6.16.3)
anāturasya devasya prāptasya tapasā mayā na yuktamiti niścitya pārvatī nāha taṁ nṛpa
Resolving that it was not proper to doubt a god untouched by affliction, one won by her own austerity, Parvati, O king, said nothing to him.
Verse 4 (padma.6.16.4)
sā na tatra pratīkāraṁ dṛṣṭvā tasya ca paśyataḥ nirgatā tata utthāya dadarśākāśavāhinīm
Finding no remedy for it there, and even as he watched, she rose and departed, and beheld the sky-flowing Ganga.
Verse 5 (padma.6.16.5)
gaṁgāṁ vāsocitāṁ matvā bhavānī tapase yayau purāpi tapasā labdho mayeśaḥ sāṁprataṁ tathā
Considering the Ganga a fitting dwelling-place, Bhavani went there for austerity: 'Long ago too, by austerity alone, I obtained the Lord — so shall it be again now.'
Verse 6 (padma.6.16.6)
ityavrajacciṁtayatī sakhībhiḥ sahitā tataḥ puraḥ kṣīranibhāṁ rājanpārvatī gaganātparam
Thinking thus, together with her companions, O king, Parvati went forward, and beheld, beyond the sky, something like milk —
Verse 7 (padma.6.16.7)
maṁdākinīṁ dadarśātha pataṁtīṁ mānasottare hāramālāmivāyāṁtīṁ viviktāṁ gaganasrajaḥ
she then saw the Mandakini, falling upon Manasottara, coming like a garland of pearls, a distinct necklace strung from the very sky.
Verse 8 (padma.6.16.8)
maṁdākinyāḥ payaḥpūro hyākṛṣṭaḥ svargato yathā śrutīnāṁ pūradhāreva brahmaṇo vadanacyutā
The Mandakini's flowing waters seemed drawn down from heaven itself, like a stream of Vedic verses flowing from Brahma's very mouth.
Verse 9 (padma.6.16.9)
dṛṣṭvā mumoda tāṁ gaṁgāṁ snātvā cālisamanvitā saṁpūjya svatanuṁ paścānniviṣṭā svarṇadītaṭe
Seeing that Ganga, she rejoiced, and, together with her companions, bathed in it; then, having worshipped her own body, she sat down on the golden river's bank.
Verse 10 (padma.6.16.10)
parasparamathālokya gaurī prāha sakhīṁ jayām tvaṁ gaccha madvapuḥ kṛtvā tatsamīpaṁ sakhī tvarā
Then, looking at one another, Gauri said to her friend Jaya: 'Go, taking on my own form, quickly, my friend, to his presence.
Verse 11 (padma.6.16.11)
jānīhi tatvaṁ kiṁ śaṁbhuryadi vānyo bhaviṣyati yadyasau tvāṁ samāliṁgya kurute cuṁbanādikam
'Find out the truth — whether it is truly Shambhu, or someone else. If he embraces you and begins kissing you or the like,
Verse 12 (padma.6.16.12)
tadā māyāṁ samāsthāya jānīhyasuramāgatam yadi cettvāṁ pratibrūyānmannimittaṁ śubhāśubham
'then, weaving an illusion of your own, know that some demon has come. But if instead he asks you about what is auspicious or inauspicious concerning me,
Verse 13 (padma.6.16.13)
asaṁśayaṁ pinākī syādatrāgatya bravīhi mām ityādiṣṭā jayā devyā gatā gaṁgādharāṁtikam
'then he is undoubtedly Pinakin himself — come back here and tell me.' Thus instructed by the Goddess, Jaya went to Gangadhara's presence.
Verse 14 (padma.6.16.14)
tāmāyāṁtīṁ sa dṛṣṭvā ca bhṛśaṁ manmathapīḍitaḥ cakārāliṁganaṁ tasyā gaurīrūpeṇa bhāvayan
Seeing her come, utterly overcome with the pain of desire, he embraced her, imagining her to be Gauri herself.
Verse 15 (padma.6.16.15)
tato jālaṁdharaḥ sadyo vīryaṁ svaṁ pramumocaha alpeṁdriyaśca saṁjāto vegataḥ kurunaṁdana
Then Jalandhara at once released his own seed; and, O joy of the Kurus, he swiftly grew weak in his very senses.
Verse 16 (padma.6.16.16)
tayā saprodito daitya na tvaṁ rudro bhaviṣyasi alpavīryo'dhamācāro nāhaṁ gaurī hi tatsakhī
She said to him: 'Demon, you shall never become Rudra — you of feeble seed and vile conduct; I am not Gauri, I am her friend.'
Verse 17 (padma.6.16.17)
ityuktvā nijamāsthāya rūpaṁ sā prāha taṁ punaḥ anena bata pāpena hatastvaṁ hi pinākinā
Having said this, resuming her own form, she said to him again: 'Alas, by this very wicked deed you have already brought your own death from Pinakin's hands.'
Verse 18 (padma.6.16.18)
iti jñātvā ca sā prāptā tatra gatvābravīdumām devi jālaṁdharo hyeṣa na śaṁbhustava vallabhaḥ
Having learned this, she went there and said to Uma: 'O Goddess, this is indeed Jalandhara, not your beloved Shambhu.'
Verse 19 (padma.6.16.19)
tato bhayārtā haravallabhābhūddrutaṁ viveśātha sarojamadhye sakhyo bhramaryaḥ kamaleṣu jātā bhayena jālaṁdharajena rājan
Then Hara's beloved, stricken with fear, swiftly entered into the midst of the lotuses; and, O king, out of fear of Jalandhara, her companions became bees among the lotuses.
Verse 20 (padma.6.16.20)
atrāṁtare vanagatāmadṛṣṭvā tāṁ nṛpāṁganām bhītāstu rakṣakāstasyāḥ satvaraṁ raṇamāyayuḥ
Meanwhile, not finding that king's wife in the forest, her terrified guardians swiftly went to the battlefield.
Verse 21 (padma.6.16.21)
tataḥ śuṁbhena te pṛṣṭāstaṁ natvocuḥ sasādhvasāḥ ātmanaḥ parihārārtho viṣṇumityasureśvaram
Then, questioned by Shumbha, they, trembling, bowed and, to excuse themselves, told him this account, naming Vishnu as the one responsible.
Verse 22 (padma.6.16.22)
śrutvā vṛṁdāṁ hṛtāṁ trasto rudrāttyaktvātha saṁgaram śuṁbhena preṣitau caṁḍamuṁḍau jālaṁdharaṁ prati
Hearing that Vrinda had been carried off, the terrified Shumbha, abandoning the battle with Rudra, sent Chanda and Munda to Jalandhara.
Verse 23 (padma.6.16.23)
mānasottaramāgatya dānavau vegavattarau hararūpadharaṁ daityaṁ ūcaturviṭapāntare
Coming with great speed to Manasottara, those two swift demons spoke, amid the trees, to that demon disguised as Hara —
Verse 24 (padma.6.16.24)
kiṁ tayā nṛpaśārdūla videśagatayā śriyā arayo yāṁ na paśyaṁti baṁdhubhiryā na bhujyate
'O tiger among kings, what use is that fortune of a wife who has gone away to foreign lands, whom your enemies now see, and whom your own kin no longer enjoy?
Verse 25 (padma.6.16.25)
jitaḥ śuṁbho hataṁ sainyaṁ deva rudreṇa te raṇe ehyehi kuru saṁgrāmaṁ na tvaṁ prāpnoṣi pārvatīm
'Shumbha has been defeated, O king; Rudra has destroyed your army in that battle. Come, come, wage war! This way you shall never obtain Parvati.
Verse 26 (padma.6.16.26)
paṁcānanasya mahiṣīṁ kathaṁ prāpnoti jaṁbukaḥ aṁdhakāraḥ kathaṁ rājanprāpnoti savituḥ prabhām
'How can a jackal ever obtain the lion's own queen? O king, how can darkness ever obtain the sun's own radiance?
Verse 27 (padma.6.16.27)
tava jālaṁdharātpīṭhāddhṛtā rājñī murāriṇā iti saṁśrūyate vārtā tasmāttvaṁ kuru saṁgaram
'Your own queen has been carried off from your very Jalandhara-seat by Murari — this news is heard everywhere; therefore you must go to war.
Verse 28 (padma.6.16.28)
raṇe śarvaṁ vijityāśu bhava sarveśvareśvaraḥ athavā śivanārācaiḥ khaṁḍito yāsi tatpadam
'Having swiftly conquered Sharva in battle, become the very Lord of all lords; or else, cut down by Shiva's arrows, attain his own abode.'
Verse 29 (padma.6.16.29)
iti jālaṁdharaḥ śrutvā bhāṣitaṁ caṁḍamuṁḍayoḥ niḥsasāra girestasmātsakrodhaṁ raktalocanaḥ
Hearing this speech of Chanda and Munda, Jalandhara, his eyes red with rage, came down at once from that mountain.
Verse 30 (padma.6.16.30)
caṁḍamuṁḍau samāśvāsya tyaktvā rūpaṁ harasya ca gacchañjālaṁdharo mārge durvāraṇamuvāca ha
Having reassured Chanda and Munda, and abandoning Hara's form, Jalandhara, going along the way, said to Durvarana —
Verse 31 (padma.6.16.31)
paśya durvāraṇedānīṁ tatra yadviṣṇunā kṛtam māyāmāśritya sā rājñī vṛṁdā nītātmanaḥ padam
'See now, Durvarana, what Vishnu has done there — that queen Vrinda has been led away by illusion, to his own realm.
Verse 32 (padma.6.16.32)
gṛhe sthitasya jāmāturviśvasennaiva buddhimān nūnaṁ tasmai pradatvā ca kanyakāṁ visṛjedbudhaḥ
'A wise man should never trust a son-in-law living in his own house; having given him one's daughter, it is best to send him on his way.
Verse 33 (padma.6.16.33)
jāmātaraṁ gṛhe naiva sthāpayetsarvathā naraḥ dhanadārādikaṁ sarvaṁ sa gṛhṇāti śanaiḥ śanaiḥ
'A man should never, under any circumstances, keep his son-in-law in his house; he takes away all one's wealth, wife, and everything else, little by little.'
Verse 34 (padma.6.16.34)
durvāraṇa uvāca rājanyatkriyate karma tattathaiva tu bhujyate tvaṁ hartumāgato gaurīṁ hariṇā te hṛtā vadhūḥ tasya spaṣṭaṁ vacaḥ śrutvā kṣaṇaṁ maunī vyaciṁtayat
Durvarana said: 'O king, whatever deed is done, that same deed is reaped in return. You came here to carry off Gauri, and Hari has carried off your own wife.' Hearing his plain words, he pondered in silence for a moment.
Verse 35 (padma.6.16.35)
jālaṁdhara uvāca kiṁ prayāmi haraṁ jetumathavā harimulbaṇam kāryadvaye samutpanne yatparaṁ tatprakathyatām
Jalandhara said: 'Shall I go to conquer Hara, or that formidable Hari? Two tasks have arisen at once — tell me, which is the greater?'
Verse 36 (padma.6.16.36)
durvāraṇa uvāca yadi yāsi hariṁ jetuṁ haraḥ pṛṣṭhe haniṣyati haniṣyaṁti raṇe śūrā yātuṁ rudro na dāsyati
Durvarana said: 'If you go to conquer Hari, Hara will strike you from behind; the heroes will slay you in that battle — Rudra will not let you go.
Verse 37 (padma.6.16.37)
tasmātpaśupatiṁ jitvā kṛtvā tvaṁ vaśyamātmanaḥ paścātprayāhi goviṁdaṁ yadi jānāsi tatpadam
'Therefore first conquer Pashupati and make him your own subject; afterward go against Govinda, if you know where he dwells.
Verse 38 (padma.6.16.38)
adhunā satvaraṁ vīra yāhi daityānmahābalān raṇaṁ kuru mahāghoraṁ yathā svarge supacyate
'Now, swiftly, O hero, go to your mighty demons; wage such a terrible war that it may be well remembered even in heaven.'
Verse 39 (padma.6.16.39)
deśakālocitaṁ śrutvā durvāraṇavacastadā yayau jālaṁdharo yoddhuṁ saha rudreṇa yoginā
Having heard Durvarana's counsel, fitting to that place and time, Jalandhara then went forth to fight against Rudra, the yogi.
