Chapter 166All chaptersChapter 168

Verse 1 (padma.6.167.1)

atra tīrthātparaṃ tīrthaṃ caṃḍeśa iti viśrutam yatra caṃḍeśvaro devo nityaṃ tiṣṭhati bhūtidaḥ

Beyond this tirtha is another, known as Chandesha, where the god Chandeshvara, the bestower of prosperity, ever abides.

Verse 2 (padma.6.167.2)

yaṃ dṛṣṭvā mucyate pāpādajñānādathavā kṛtāt sarvābhirdevatābhiśca militvā nagaraṃ kṛtam caṃḍeśa iti vikhyātaṃ nāmnā caiva maheśvari

Beholding him, one is released from sin, whether committed in ignorance or knowingly. All the gods together made a city here, renowned by the very name Chandesha, O great goddess.

Verse 3 (padma.6.167.3)

iti caṃḍeśatīrtham atra tīrthātparaṃ tīrthaṃ gāṇapatyaṃ tato bhuvi sābhramatyāṃ samīpe tu vikhyātaṃ devi nirmitam

Thus the tirtha of Chandesha. Beyond this tirtha, on earth, is another called Ganapatya, made renowned near the Sabarmati, O goddess.

Verse 4 (padma.6.167.4)

tatra snātvā naro devi mucyate nātra saṃśayaḥ manye sābhramatī tīre janānāṃ hitakāmyayā

A man who bathes there, O goddess, is released -- there is no doubt of this. I consider that, on the bank of the Sabarmati, out of desire for the welfare of the people,

Verse 5 (padma.6.167.5)

pṛthivyāṃ yāni tīrthāni sāgarāṃtāni yāni ca tāni sarvāṇi saṃtyajya tīrthe vai paramādbhute

all the tirthas that exist upon the earth, even as far as the ocean's edge, having set them all aside, at this most wondrous tirtha --

Verse 6 (padma.6.167.6)

śrāddhaṃ karoti yastatra rudrabhaktyā jiteṃdriyaḥ phalaṃ prāpnoti śuddhātmā sarvayajñasamudbhavam

whoever performs shraddha there, with devotion to Rudra, with senses subdued, that pure-souled man obtains the fruit born of every sacrifice.

Verse 7 (padma.6.167.7)

pitṝnudiśya yatkiṃcidgaṇatīrthe pradīyate tatsarvaṃ jāyate kṣipraṃ gaṇanāthaprasādataḥ

Whatever, however small, is offered to the ancestors at this tirtha of the Ganas, all of it bears fruit swiftly, through the grace of the Lord of the Ganas.

Verse 8 (padma.6.167.8)

tasmiṃstīrthe naraḥ snātvā vṛṣaṃ viprāya dāpayet sarvalokānatikramya sa gacchetparamāṃ gatim

A man who bathes at that tirtha and gives a bull to a brahmin, having passed beyond all other worlds, attains the supreme state.
