The Glory of Varaha Tirtha (Kardamala)

Verse 1 (padma.6.169.1)

महेश उवाच। ततःपरं देवनदी वार्त्रघ्नी संगमात्किल । प्रविष्टा भद्रया सार्द्धं सागरं वरुणालयम्

maheśa uvāca tataḥparaṃ devanadī vārtraghnī saṃgamātkila praviṣṭā bhadrayā sārddhaṃ sāgaraṃ varuṇālayam

Mahesha said: Beyond that, the celestial river, after her confluence with Vartraghni, entered, together with the Bhadra, into the ocean, the abode of Varuna.

Verse 2 (padma.6.169.2)

समुद्रोऽपि तया तावदागम्य प्रियकाम्यया । साभ्रमत्यानुरागेण कृतवान्प्रियमेलनम्

samudro'pi tayā tāvadāgamya priyakāmyayā sābhramatyānurāgeṇa kṛtavānpriyamelanam

The ocean too, coming forward out of desire to please her, out of love for the Sabarmati, brought about a joyful meeting.

Verse 3 (padma.6.169.3)

भद्रा वापि सुभद्रा या वयस्या सा नदी पुरा । सहायमकरोन्मार्गे साक्षात्श्रीरूपधारिणी

bhadrā vāpi subhadrā yā vayasyā sā nadī purā sahāyamakaronmārge sākṣātśrīrūpadhāriṇī

And Bhadra, also called Subhadra, that river who was formerly her companion, herself of the very form of Shri, assisted her along the way.

Verse 4 (padma.6.169.4)

तयोस्तुसंगमः पुण्यः सागरस्योत्तरे तटे । तत्र तीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा मृष्टं वारि ददाति यः

tayostusaṃgamaḥ puṇyaḥ sāgarasyottare taṭe tatra tīrthe naraḥ snātvā mṛṣṭaṃ vāri dadāti yaḥ

Their sacred confluence lies on the northern shore of the ocean. Whatever man bathes at that tirtha and offers pure water there,

Verse 5 (padma.6.169.5)

नमस्कृत्य वराहाय वारुणं स्थानमाप्नुयात् । प्रविश्य भगवान्विष्णुस्तेन मार्गेण सागरम्

namaskṛtya varāhāya vāruṇaṃ sthānamāpnuyāt praviśya bhagavānviṣṇustena mārgeṇa sāgaram

and pays homage to Varaha, attains the abode of Varuna. It was by that very path that the Lord Vishnu entered the ocean,

Verse 6 (padma.6.169.6)

जित्वा वै दानवान्सर्वान्देवानां परिपंथिनः । देवो यज्ञवराहश्च संक्षोभ्य मकरालयम् । क्रीडित्वा सुचिरं कालं कर्दमालेन निर्ययौ

jitvā vai dānavānsarvāndevānāṃ paripaṃthinaḥ devo yajñavarāhaśca saṃkṣobhya makarālayam krīḍitvā suciraṃ kālaṃ kardamālena niryayau

having conquered all the danavas who obstructed the gods; and the god Yajna-Varaha, having churned up the abode of the makaras, having sported there for a very long time, emerged again by way of Kardamala.

Verse 7 (padma.6.169.7)

पार्वत्युवाच। देव यज्ञवराहस्य साभ्रमत्यां प्रवेशनम् । निर्गमं कर्दमालेन ब्रूहि त्वं मम विस्तरात्

pārvatyuvāca deva yajñavarāhasya sābhramatyāṃ praveśanam nirgamaṃ kardamālena brūhi tvaṃ mama vistarāt

Parvati said: O god, tell me in detail of Yajna-Varaha's entry into the Sabarmati, and of his emergence by way of Kardamala.

Verse 8 (padma.6.169.8)

महादेव उवाच। अंतर्भू क्रीडितमिदं वराहस्य हरेः पुरा । तत्सर्वं कथयिष्यामि शृणु त्वं नगनंदिनि

mahādeva uvāca aṃtarbhū krīḍitamidaṃ varāhasya hareḥ purā tatsarvaṃ kathayiṣyāmi śṛṇu tvaṃ naganaṃdini

Mahadeva said: This sporting of Hari as the Boar, beneath the earth, took place long ago -- I shall tell you all of it; listen, O daughter of the mountain.

Verse 9 (padma.6.169.9)

योऽयं वै भगवान्साक्षाद्धृतवान्सूकरं वपुः । देवानां कार्यसिद्ध्यर्थं रूपं धृत्वा सुरेश्वरः

yo'yaṃ vai bhagavānsākṣāddhṛtavānsūkaraṃ vapuḥ devānāṃ kāryasiddhyarthaṃ rūpaṃ dhṛtvā sureśvaraḥ

That very Lord who assumed, in person, the form of a boar -- the lord of the gods, having taken this form for the sake of accomplishing the task of the gods,

Verse 10 (padma.6.169.10)

धृत्वा वै पृथिवीं देवीं निर्गतः कर्दमालयम् । तत्र तीर्थं महज्जातं वराहाख्यं तु सुंदरि

dhṛtvā vai pṛthivīṃ devīṃ nirgataḥ kardamālayam tatra tīrthaṃ mahajjātaṃ varāhākhyaṃ tu suṃdari

having lifted up the goddess Earth, emerged at Kardamalaya. There a great tirtha arose, called Varaha, O beautiful one.

Verse 11 (padma.6.169.11)

तत्र स्नाति नरो यस्तु मुक्तिभाक्स न संशयः । अत्र श्राद्धं प्रकुर्वीत पितॄणां मुक्तिहेतवे । विमुक्तस्तैः समं लोकं प्रयाति सुखदं महत्

tatra snāti naro yastu muktibhāksa na saṃśayaḥ atra śrāddhaṃ prakurvīta pitṝṇāṃ muktihetave vimuktastaiḥ samaṃ lokaṃ prayāti sukhadaṃ mahat

Whatever man bathes there becomes a partaker of liberation, without doubt. One should perform shraddha there for the liberation of the ancestors; thus freed, one goes, together with them, to a great world of happiness.
