The Glory of Sangama Tirtha

Chapter 169All chaptersChapter 171

Verse 1 (padma.6.170.1)

mahādeva uvāca atra tīrthātparaṃ tīrthaṃ saṅgamākhyamiti śrutam atra sābhramatī gaṃgā militā sāgareṇa tu

Mahadeva said: Beyond this tirtha is another, known by tradition as Sangama; here the Sabarmati, that Ganga, meets with the ocean.

Verse 2 (padma.6.170.2)

tatra snānaṃ ca dānaṃ ca kartavyaṃ vidhipūrvakam yatra snātvā tu mucyaṃte mahāpātakino'pi ye

There bathing and gift-giving should be performed according to due rite; bathing there, even those guilty of great sins are released.

Verse 3 (padma.6.170.3)

tatra śrāddhaṃ prakartavyaṃ svānāṃ ca hitamicchatā yatra vai tu kṛte śrāddhe pitṛloke vaseddhruvam

One who desires the welfare of his own kin should perform shraddha there; when shraddha is performed there, one certainly comes to dwell in the world of the ancestors.

Verse 4 (padma.6.170.4)

yatra vai sāgaro devo nityaṃ milati gaṃgayā brahmahā tatra mucyeta kimanyairitarairaghaiḥ

Where the divine ocean ever meets with the Ganga, even the slayer of a brahmin is released there -- what then of other, lesser sins?

Verse 5 (padma.6.170.5)

yatra tīrthaṃ na jānaṃti lokā vai maṃdabuddhayaḥ tadā vai mama nāmnā ca kartavyaṃ tīrthamuttamam

Where people, of dull understanding, do not know of this tirtha, there this excellent tirtha should still be honored, even under my own name.
