Uttara Khanda · Chapter 176
The Glory of the Gita's Second Chapter: The Tale of Devasharma and Mitravan
Verse 1 (padma.6.176.1)
śrībhagavānuvāca ādimasyaivamākhyānamudīritamanuttamam śṛṇu māhātmyamanyeṣāmadhyāyānāmapīṃdire
The Blessed Lord said: Thus has the unsurpassed tale of the first chapter been told. Hear now, O Indira, the glory of the other chapters as well.
Verse 2 (padma.6.176.2)
dakṣiṇasyāṃ diśi śrīmānāsīdāmnāyavādinām pure puraṃdarāhvāne devaśarmeti viśrutaḥ
In the southern quarter, in a city called by the name of Purandara, there lived a glorious man renowned among the reciters of sacred tradition, known as Devasharma.
Verse 3 (padma.6.176.3)
arcitātithirāmnāto vedaśāstraviśāradaḥ āhartā kratusaṃghānāṃ tāpasānāṃ priyaḥ sadā
He was renowned for honoring his guests, learned in the Veda and its scriptures, a performer of many sacrifices, ever dear to ascetics.
Verse 4 (padma.6.176.4)
devānsaṃtarpayāmāsa havyairhutavahaṃ ciram na copalebhe dharmātmā śāṃtimekāṃtikīṃ tataḥ
For a long time he satisfied the gods with oblations poured into the fire; yet that righteous man did not attain thereby the peace that comes from single-pointed devotion.
Verse 5 (padma.6.176.5)
niḥśreyasaṃ sa jijñāsustāpasānanuvāsaram siṣeve satyasaṃkalpānanalpaireva kalpakaiḥ
Wishing to know the highest good, he served ascetics of true resolve, day after day, over many, many years.
Verse 6 (padma.6.176.6)
evamācaratastasya kāle mahati gacchati muktakarmā tataḥ kaścitprādurāsītpurā bhuvi
While he thus conducted himself, and much time passed, a certain man freed from the bonds of action then appeared before him.
Verse 7 (padma.6.176.7)
anubhūtanirākāṃkṣī nāsāgranyastalocanaḥ śāṃtacetāḥ paraṃ brahma dhyāyannānaṃdanirbharaḥ
He was one who had realized freedom from desire, his gaze fixed upon the tip of his nose, of peaceful mind, ever meditating on the supreme Brahman, overflowing with bliss.
Verse 8 (padma.6.176.8)
pādau tasyopasaṃgṛhya praṇatenāṃtarātmanā cakāra vidhivattasmai vidvānatithisatkriyām
That learned man, taking hold of his feet with an inwardly bowed heart, duly performed for him the rites of hospitality due a guest.
Verse 9 (padma.6.176.9)
taṃ ca śuddhena bhāvena parituṣṭaṃ tapasvinam praṇataḥ paripapraccha nirvāṇasthitimātmanaḥ
And that ascetic, pleased with him for his pure disposition, was, with bowed head, asked by him about the state of the soul's own liberation.
Verse 10 (padma.6.176.10)
sa tasmai kathayāmāsa pure'sau puranāmani mitravaṃtamajāpālamupadeṣṭāramātmavit
That knower of the Self told him of a certain goat-herder named Mitravan, an instructor in that same city.
Verse 11 (padma.6.176.11)
sa cābhivaṃdya tatpādāvetyasau puramūrjitam tasyottaradiśobhāge dadarśa vipulaṃ vanam
Having bowed at his feet, and having come to that mighty city, he beheld, on its northern side, a vast forest,
Verse 12 (padma.6.176.12)
mārutāṃdolitāneka kusumāmodasuṃdaram unmattabhramarodgīta nādāpūritadiṅmukham
beautiful with the fragrance of countless flowers swayed by the wind, all directions filled with the humming song of intoxicated bees.
Verse 13 (padma.6.176.13)
tasminvane sarittīre niṣīdaṃtaṃ śilātale mitravaṃtaṃ dadarśātha sānaṃdastimitekṣaṇam
In that forest, on the bank of a river, seated upon a rock, he then beheld Mitravan, his eyes fixed in blissful, motionless contemplation --
Verse 14 (padma.6.176.14)
api svābhāvikaṃ vairaṃ hitvānyonyaṃ virodhibhiḥ satvairāvṛtamudyāne maṃdasyaṃdanabhāsvati
surrounded, in that grove bright with slowly moving streams, even by creatures who, though naturally enemies to one another, had abandoned their mutual hostility,
Verse 15 (padma.6.176.15)
śāṃteṣu mṛgayūtheṣu daśānaṃdamanojñayā kṛpānuviddhayā bhūmiṃ niṣiṃcaṃtamivāmṛtam
the herds of deer at peace all around; his sight granting joy to all who beheld it, seeming, through his compassion, to sprinkle the earth itself with nectar.
Verse 16 (padma.6.176.16)
upetya vinayenāmumunmanāḥ prītamānasaḥ kiṃcidānamraśirasā tenāpi sa tu satkṛtaḥ
Approaching him with humility, his mind uplifted and pleased, bowing his head slightly, he too was welcomed by him.
Verse 17 (padma.6.176.17)
upatasthe tato vidvānmitravaṃtamananyadhīḥ samāptadhyānakālaṃ sa paryapṛcchatsamāhitaḥ
That learned man, his mind fixed on nothing else, then waited upon Mitravan; and when the time of his meditation had ended, he, composed in mind, asked him:
Verse 18 (padma.6.176.18)
devaśarmovāca ātmānaṃ vettumicchāmi tadamuṣminmanorathe labdhasiddhimupāyaṃ māmupadeṣṭuṃ tvamarhasi
Devasharma said: I wish to know the Self. Regarding this very desire, you, who have attained accomplishment, should instruct me in the means.
Verse 19 (padma.6.176.19)
śrībhagavānuvāca parāmṛśya kṣaṇaṃ so'pi mitravānidamabravīt mitravānuvāca vidvanviddhi purāvṛttamucyamānamidaṃ mayā
The Blessed Lord said: Reflecting for a moment, Mitravan then said this. Mitravan said: O learned one, know this old tale that I am about to relate.
Verse 20 (padma.6.176.20)
asti godāvarītīre pratiṣṭhānābhidhaṃ puram tatra durdamanāmāsīdanvaye ca manīṣiṇām
On the bank of the Godavari there is a city called Pratishthana. There, in a lineage of wise men, there once lived one named Durdama.
Verse 21 (padma.6.176.21)
tatrāsti vikramo nāma sevyamāno mahīpatiḥ dānāni pratyahaṃ gṛhṇanvarttate udaraṃbharaḥ
There lived a king named Vikrama, well-attended, who lived merely to fill his own belly, daily accepting gifts.
Verse 22 (padma.6.176.22)
kālena kālapāśena baddhānīto yamālayam nirayeṣu samagreṣu yātanā anubhūya ca
In time, bound by the noose of Time, he was brought to the abode of Yama; and, having endured torments in every hell,
Verse 23 (padma.6.176.23)
kasmiṃścitsa kule jāto durvṛttānāṃ dvijanmanām bhavāṃtarānuvartinyā vidyayā sa puraskṛtaḥ
he was born in a certain family of twice-born of evil conduct; furnished with a certain skill that had followed him from a former existence,
Verse 24 (padma.6.176.24)
upayeme durādharṣāṃ kanyakāmadhame kule kālena sā vayo hitvā śaiśavaṃ yauvanaṃ yayau
he married a headstrong maiden of a lowly family. In time, having left behind her childhood, she came to youth --
Verse 25 (padma.6.176.25)
pīnastanī ca suśroṇī madavihvalalocanā patiṃ na sehe durvṛttaṃ cakame svapatīnparān
full-breasted, shapely-hipped, her eyes restless with passion; she could not bear her ill-conducted husband, and desired other men besides her own.
Verse 26 (padma.6.176.26)
vṛttimāhartukāmasminnirgatā sā purādbahiḥ saṃgatā kāmukenāsau ciraṃ cāṃḍālajanmanā
Wishing to earn her own living, she went out beyond the city and consorted for a long time with a lustful man born to an outcaste family.
Verse 27 (padma.6.176.27)
dadhe garbhamasau tasmātsā ca kanyopapadyate saiva bhāryāpi tasyāsītpūrvapāpaprasaṃgataḥ
She conceived a child by him, and a daughter was born; and that very daughter, through the connection of her former sin, later became his own wife.
Verse 28 (padma.6.176.28)
saiva vṛddhā tataḥ kāle ḍākinī samajāyata kusaṃgātkumatirjātā duṣṭanārīprasaṃgataḥ
That same woman, grown old in time, became a witch; through evil company she became evil-minded, through association with wicked women.
Verse 29 (padma.6.176.29)
cakhāda vyādhitaṃ vyādhamasṛgāsvādalālasā bhramaṃtī vipine ghore janairdṛṣṭvā bahiṣkṛtā
Craving the taste of blood, she devoured a diseased hunter; wandering in a terrible forest, seen by people, she was cast out.
Verse 30 (padma.6.176.30)
paretalokamāsādya vyādhau vyāghro'bhyavarttata narakāndāruṇānbhuktvā jīvahiṃsā prabhāvataḥ
Reaching the world of the dead, that same hunter later became a tiger; having endured terrible hells through the power of his own violence toward living beings.
Verse 31 (padma.6.176.31)
sāpi kālena duṣṭātmā mṛtyuvegamupāgatā nirayānetya durddharṣānajājāyata madgṛhe
She too, that evil-souled one, in time met with the onrush of death; and, having gone through unassailable hells, was born as a goat in my own house.
Verse 32 (padma.6.176.32)
tāmanyā apyahaṃ vidvanpālayankānanāṃtare apaśyandvīpinaṃ ghoraṃ jighāṃsaṃtamivākhilam
O learned one, tending that goat, along with others, within the forest, I beheld a terrible leopard, as though eager to devour every living thing.
Verse 33 (padma.6.176.33)
samālokya tamāyāṃtaṃ bhayena prapalāyitam ajāyūthaṃ parityajya mayā maraṇabhīruṇā
Seeing him approaching, fleeing in terror, and, myself fearful of death, having abandoned the herd of goats,
Verse 34 (padma.6.176.34)
upadudrāva sa dvīpī pūrvavairamanusmaran ajā tu tatsamīpe'gātsatvaraṃ saridaṃtike
that leopard, remembering their former enmity, rushed at that goat; but she quickly ran near me, by the river's edge.
Verse 35 (padma.6.176.35)
tatra sā bhayamutsṛjya hitvā vairamanargalā avatasthe sa ca dvīpī tūṣṇīmāsīdamatsaraḥ
There, casting off her fear, having abandoned their hostility without restraint, she stood still; and the leopard too became silent, without enmity.
Verse 36 (padma.6.176.36)
taṃ tathāvidhamālokya sā vaktumupacakrame dvīpinnabhīpsitaṃ bhuṃkṣva māṃsamuddhṛtya sādaraḥ
Seeing him thus transformed, she began to speak: 'O leopard, take my flesh and eat what you desire, with due honor.'
Verse 37 (padma.6.176.37)
neyaṃ bhavati te buddhiḥ kathaṃ vairamatiṃ tyajaḥ ityākarṇya tadā vākyaṃ prāha dvīpī vimatsaraḥ
'How is it that your mind is now free of this thought -- how have you abandoned your hostile intent?' Hearing these words, the leopard, now free of enmity, said:
Verse 38 (padma.6.176.38)
sthāne'sminme gato dveṣaḥ kṣutpipāsā ca niryayau na prārthayāmi tena tvāṃ samīpe samupasthitām
'At this very spot my hatred has departed, and my hunger and thirst have both left me. Therefore I do not desire you, though you stand right here beside me.'
Verse 39 (padma.6.176.39)
saivamuktā punaḥ prāha jātāhaṃ nirbhayā katham kimatra kāraṇaṃ vetsi yadi me vaktumarhasi
Thus addressed, she said again: 'How have I become fearless? If you know the cause of this, you should tell it to me.'
Verse 40 (padma.6.176.40)
evamuktaḥ punardvīpī tāmāhājāṃ na vedmyaham purogatamimaṃ praṣṭuṃ mahāṃtamiti nirgatau
Thus addressed again, the leopard said to the goat: 'I do not know it myself.' Both of them then set out to ask this great sage standing before them.
Verse 41 (padma.6.176.41)
tābhyāmubhābhyāmāgatya pṛṣṭo'haṃ bahuvismayaḥ ahaṃ ca sahitastābhyāmapṛcchaṃ vānareśvaram
Coming to me together, I was questioned by both of them, filled with great astonishment; and I, together with them, then asked a lord of monkeys nearby.
Verse 42 (padma.6.176.42)
mayā pṛṣṭaḥ sa vipredamabravītsādaraṃ kapiḥ śṛṇu vakṣyāmyajāpāla vṛttamatra purātanam
Questioned by me, O brahmin, that monkey respectfully said this: 'Listen, O goat-herder, I shall tell you the ancient event connected with this place.'
Verse 43 (padma.6.176.43)
idamāyatanaṃ paśya purovanagataṃ mahat atra tryaṃbakaliṃgaṃ hi druhiṇena pratiṣṭhitam
'Behold this great shrine, standing here at the edge of the forest. Here a linga of Tryambaka was established by Brahma himself.'
Verse 44 (padma.6.176.44)
sukarmānāma medhāvī paryupāste tapaścaran vanapuṣpāṇyapāhṛtya surapūjyaṃ purobhavam
'A wise man named Sukarma used to worship here, practicing austerity, gathering forest-flowers and offering them to that god, worshipped even by the gods, standing at the forest's edge.'
Verse 45 (padma.6.176.45)
saṃsnāpya saridaṃbhobhiḥ kevalaṃ karmaṇā vasan kāle mahati tasyāgādatithiḥ kaścidaṃtikam
'Bathing the linga with the waters of the river, living purely by the performance of ritual action alone -- after a long time, a certain guest once came to him.'
Verse 46 (padma.6.176.46)
upāhṛtya phalāhāraṃ sa tasmai paryakalpayat tenātithyena saṃprītaḥ sukarmāṇamabhāṣata
'He brought fruit for food and offered it to him; and, pleased by that hospitality, the guest spoke to Sukarma:'
Verse 47 (padma.6.176.47)
kimidaṃ karmaṇo mūlaṃ phalaṃ bhuktvā tu tiṣṭhasi gatānugatayā vṛttyā kiṃ vā kevalamīhase
'What is the root purpose of this action of yours? Do you remain here merely enjoying its fruit, or do you strive for it merely out of habit, following what has gone before?'
Verse 48 (padma.6.176.48)
sa evamuktaḥ prāyeṇa prītenātmavidā tadā pratyuvāca vacaḥ spaṣṭamātmano hitamuttamam
'Thus addressed, that mostly pleased knower of the Self then replied with clear words, spoken for his own highest good:'
Verse 49 (padma.6.176.49)
vidvanna vedmi tatvena phalametasya karmaṇaḥ bubhutsayā paraḥ śaṃbhuḥ sevyate kevalaṃ yayā
'O learned one, I do not truly know the fruit of this action; supreme Shambhu is served by me only out of a longing to know the truth.'
Verse 50 (padma.6.176.50)
phalametasya sevāyāḥ paripākaṃ kapardinaḥ yanmāṃsamanugṛhṇāsi saṃspṛśyātmamanoratham
'The fruit of this service is the full ripening of the matted-haired Lord's grace -- as when you graciously accept this offering, thereby touching my own heart's desire.'
Verse 51 (padma.6.176.51)
tasyaivaṃ sūnṛtaṃ vākyaṃ śrutvā prītastapodhanaḥ dvitīyamālilekhā'sau gītādhyāyaṃ śilātale
Hearing his such kind and honest words, that guest, rich in austerity, pleased, then inscribed the second chapter of the Gita upon a rock,
Verse 52 (padma.6.176.52)
ādideśāśu taṃ vipraṃ paṭhanābhyasanāya ca phaliṣyatyātmanaḥ svairaṃ paritaste manorathaḥ
and quickly instructed that brahmin to read and practice it: 'Your own heart's desire shall bear fruit for you freely, in every way.'
Verse 53 (padma.6.176.53)
ityuktvāṃtardadhe dhīmānpuratastasya paśyataḥ vismitastasya cādeśātso'nvatiṣṭhadanāratam
Having said this, that wise one vanished before his very eyes; and Sukarma, astonished, then followed his instruction without ceasing.
Verse 54 (padma.6.176.54)
tataḥ kālena mahatā bhāvitātmā prasannadhīḥ yatrayatra cacārāsau śāṃtaṃ tattattapovanam
Then, after a very long time, his soul purified, his mind serene, wherever he wandered, that place at once became a peaceful grove of penance.
Verse 55 (padma.6.176.55)
na dvaṃdvabādhā naiva kṣutpipāsā na ca vā bhayam tapasā tasya jānīhi dvitīyādhyāyajāpinaḥ
No affliction of opposites, no hunger or thirst, no fear whatsoever -- know that this came through the austerity of one who recited that second chapter.
Verse 56 (padma.6.176.56)
mitravānuvāca evamuktaśca tenā'haṃ khyāpayitvā parāṃ kathām anujñātaprasaṃnena cchāgīvyāghrayutogamam
Mitravan said: Thus told this same, most excellent tale by him, I, permitted by that pleased sage, went, together with the goat and the leopard,
Verse 57 (padma.6.176.57)
gatvā śilātale paśyamadhyāyaṃ likhitaṃ paṭhet tasyaivāvarttanādāptaṃ tapasaḥ pāramuttamam
and, going there, beheld the chapter written upon the rock, and read it; and by the mere repetition of it, I attained the utmost summit of austerity.
Verse 58 (padma.6.176.58)
tena tvamapi kalyāṇa nityamāhartumarhasi adhyāyaṃ tena te muktiradūrasthā bhaviṣyati
Therefore you too, O blessed one, should constantly perform the recitation of this same chapter; by it, liberation shall not remain far from you.
Verse 59 (padma.6.176.59)
devaśarmā samādiṣṭastena mitravatā svayam abhyarcya praṇato bhūtvā puraṃdarapuraṃ yayau
Thus instructed by Mitravan himself, Devasharma, having worshipped him and bowed before him, went to the city of Purandara,
Verse 60 (padma.6.176.60)
tatrātmavidamāsādya devatāyatane kvacit vṛttametannivedyādāvadhyāyamapaṭhattataḥ
and there, having found a knower of the Self at a certain temple, and having related this whole account to him, he then read the chapter, from the very beginning.
Verse 61 (padma.6.176.61)
