Verse 1 (padma.6.177.1)
śrībhagavānuvāca janasthāne jaḍo nāma dvijanmā kauśikānvayī hitvā jātyucitaṃ dharmaṃ vaṇigvṛttyāṃ mano dadhe
The Blessed Lord said: In Janasthana there lived a twice-born man named Jada, of the lineage of Kaushika, who, abandoning the dharma proper to his birth, set his mind upon the trade of a merchant.
Verse 2 (padma.6.177.2)
vyasanī paradāreṣu dīvyannakṣaiḥ pibanmadhu mṛgayā nirato nityaṃ kālamevaṃ nināya saḥ
Addicted to other men's wives, gambling with dice, drinking liquor, ever devoted to the hunt -- thus he passed his time.
Verse 3 (padma.6.177.3)
kṣīṇe vitte tato rātrau cauryāmārabdhavāṃstataḥ pratipede dhanaṃ tena yajvanāṃ yaṣṭumarthinām
When his wealth was exhausted, he then took up theft by night, and by this means obtained wealth from sacrificers wishing to perform sacrifices.
Verse 4 (padma.6.177.4)
sa dūramagamattena vāṇijyāyottarāṃ diśam kastūrimaguruṃ kṛṣṇaṃ cāmarāṃścaṃdrikojjvalān
With that wealth he traveled far into the northern region for trade, obtaining musk, black aloewood, and chowries bright as moonlight,
Verse 5 (padma.6.177.5)
gṛhītvā vṛtya cāninye paṃcaṣādadhvayojanāt athāparasminnahani priyādarśanadohani
and, having gathered them, was bringing them back some five or six yojanas along the road. Then, on a certain day, one that promised the sight of loved ones,
Verse 6 (padma.6.177.6)
dūramadhvānamullaṃghya ravāvastamite sati dhvāṃte prasarpati svairaṃ diśo daśa tarostale
having crossed a long stretch of road, and with the sun having set, and darkness freely spreading in every direction, at the foot of a tree
Verse 7 (padma.6.177.7)
gato vaśaṃ sadasyūnāṃ nijaghne taiśca satvaram dharmalopādasau jajñe ghoraścogrataro grahaḥ
he fell into the power of bandits present there, and was quickly slain by them. Through his lapse from dharma he then became a terrible and most fierce demon,
Verse 8 (padma.6.177.8)
pipāsito bubhukṣārto lelihānaśca sṛkkiṇī urdhvakeśo'tijaṃghāluḥ pṛṣṭalagnodaro mahat
tormented by thirst, afflicted with hunger, ever licking the corners of his mouth, his hair standing on end, his legs excessively long, his great belly clinging to his very spine,
Verse 9 (padma.6.177.9)
asthimātraśarīro'bhūddurvṛttanayano bhṛśam atrāṃtare sutastasya dharmātmā vedakovidaḥ
his body reduced to mere bones, his eyes exceedingly wild in appearance. Meanwhile his own son, a righteous man learned in the Veda,
Verse 10 (padma.6.177.10)
paryapālayadatyarthaṃ didṛkṣustaṃ tadāgamat nityamanveṣayanvārttāṃ pāṃthebhyo nopalabdhavān
waited for him with great longing, eager to see him; but though he constantly sought news of him from travelers, he could get none.
Verse 11 (padma.6.177.11)
tataḥ kadācidāyāte sahāyini ca mānave tasmādviditavṛttāṃtaḥ śuśoca pitaraṃ bahu
Then, once, when a companion of his father returned, he learned the whole account from him, and grieved greatly for his father.
Verse 12 (padma.6.177.12)
Then, having reflected, that wise son, wishing to perform the rites for the departed, set out with his provisions, intending to go to Varanasi.
Verse 13 (padma.6.177.13)
mārge nivāsānsaptāṣṭau nītvā tasya tarostale saṃdhyāṃ pracakrame kartuṃ yatrāsya nihataḥ pitā
Having passed seven or eight nights of lodging along the way, he came, at the foot of that very tree where his father had been slain, to perform his evening rites.
Verse 14 (padma.6.177.14)
There he recited the third chapter of the Gita. Then a terrible voice seized upon the middle of the sky above,
Verse 15 (padma.6.177.15)
dadarśa ghoramākāśātpataṃtaṃ pitaraṃ tataḥ vismayena bhayenāpi vikalīkṛtacetanaḥ
and he beheld his own terrible father falling from the sky; his mind became disordered both with wonder and with fear.
Verse 16 (padma.6.177.16)
tejasā bhūyasā vyāptamāluloke puro'mbare kiṃkiṇīkoṭisaṃkīrṇaṃ tejasā vyāptadiṅmukham
He then saw before him, in the sky, something pervaded by an immense splendor, crowded with millions of tinkling bells, filling every direction with its radiance --
Verse 17 (padma.6.177.17)
vimānamagrato'paśyaddivyamadhyagracetanaḥ tatrāpaśyatsamārūḍhaṃ divyābhiḥ strībhirāvṛtam
in front of him, his mind fixed intently, he beheld a divine celestial chariot; and there, mounted upon it, surrounded by celestial women,
Verse 18 (padma.6.177.18)
saṃstūyamānaṃ munibhiḥ pitaraṃ pītavāsasam praṇatastaṃ samālokya yuyuje tena cāśiṣā
praised by sages, he beheld his own father, now clad in yellow garments. Bowing before him and beholding him, he was joined with him and received his blessing.
Verse 19 (padma.6.177.19)
He then asked him about this event, and his father related it to him: 'From the body so hard to relinquish, born of such action, my son, through your own meritorious act,'
Verse 20 (padma.6.177.20)
mocito'smi tvayā daivādadhyāyaṃ japatāṃtike tannivarttasva japataḥ sāṃprataṃ tvāmupasthitam
'I have been released, by fate, through your reciting this chapter close by. Therefore now stop your recitation -- I have come to you.'
Verse 21 (padma.6.177.21)
vārāṇasīṃ yadarthaṃ yattadanuṣṭhitamātmanaḥ śrībhagavānuvāca evamuktaḥ sa ca prāha pitaraṃ dīptatejasam
'What you had set out to accomplish for my sake, going to Varanasi, has already been performed by yourself.' The Blessed Lord said: Thus addressed, the son spoke to his father, blazing with splendor:
Verse 22 (padma.6.177.22)
suta uvāca hitaṃ mamānuśādhi tvaṃ kāryamanyanmayānu kim śrībhagavānuvāca tataḥ prāha pitā putraṃ kāryametattvayānagha
The son said: Instruct me now as to my own good -- what other duty remains for me to do? The Blessed Lord said: Then the father said to his son: 'This, O sinless one, is a task for you --'
Verse 23 (padma.6.177.23)
yanmayācaritaṃ karma bhrātrā mama tu tatkṛtam sa yāto narakaṃ ghoraṃ taṃ mocayitumarhasi
'-- the very deed that I once did was also done by my own brother; he has gone to a terrible hell -- you should release him.'
Verse 24 (padma.6.177.24)
anye madanvaye ye vai nirayaṃ pratipedire te ca mocayitavyāste iti me'sti manorathaḥ
'And whatever others in my own lineage have likewise fallen into hell should also be released by you -- this is my heart's desire.'
Verse 25 (padma.6.177.25)
ityevamuktaḥ putrastaṃ punaḥ prāha kṛtāṃjali karmaṇā kena tānsarvānmocayāmi tadādiśa
Thus addressed, the son, with joined palms, said to him again: 'By what act shall I release all of them? Please instruct me in this.'
Verse 26 (padma.6.177.26)
evaṃ nivedito vākyaṃ pitā sutamuvāca ha pitovāca yenāhaṃ mocito vatsa tadanuṣṭhātumarhasi
Thus questioned, the father spoke this word to his son. The father said: 'That very act by which I was released, my son, is what you should perform.'
Verse 27 (padma.6.177.27)
anuṣṭhāya tadutpannaṃ tebhyaḥ puṇyaṃ samutsṛja tato'hamiva te sarve pūrve saṃtyajya yātanām
'Having performed it, dedicate the merit thereby produced to them. Then all those forefathers, like myself, having abandoned their torment,'
Verse 28 (padma.6.177.28)
gamiṣyaṃtyacireṇaiva tadviṣṇoḥ paramaṃ padam sa saṃdiṣṭovadatputro yadyevaṃ tāta nārakān
'-- shall go, without delay, to that supreme abode of Vishnu.' Thus instructed, the son said: 'If it is so, father, all who are in hell --'
Verse 29 (padma.6.177.29)
sarvānapi vimokṣyāmi yadi te rocate vacaḥ evamastu śivaṃ bhūyādupapannaṃ mahatpriyam
'-- I shall release every one of them, if my word is pleasing to you.' 'So be it, may it be for the good; this is a great and welcome thing that has come to pass,'
Verse 30 (padma.6.177.30)
ityādiśya pitā putraṃ yayau viṣṇoḥ paraṃ padam so'pi tasmātparāvṛttya janasthānaṃ prapadya ca
having thus instructed his son, the father went to the supreme abode of Vishnu. The son too, turning back from there, having reached Janasthana,
Verse 31 (padma.6.177.31)
suṃdarasya puraḥ śaureścālaye kālamabhyagāt sa kurvāṇoḥsamādīni pitrā ca yadudīritam
spent his time before a beautiful shrine of Shauri, Vishnu, performing purificatory rites and the like, that very thing his father had told him to do --
Verse 32 (padma.6.177.32)
utsasarja kṛtaṃ puṇyaṃ mocayiṣyansa nārakān atrāṃtare pade viṣṇoryātanāpadamīyuṣaḥ
he offered up the merit he had accumulated, so as to release those in hell. Meanwhile, at the abode of Vishnu, some, having reached the place of torment,
Verse 33 (padma.6.177.33)
nārakānmocayiṣyaṃtaḥ kiṃkarā yamamabhyayuḥ tena te pūjitāḥ sarve satkriyābhiranekadhā
found themselves being released from hell; and the messengers of Yama, seeing this, went to Yama himself. By him they were all honored with hospitable rites in many ways.
Verse 34 (padma.6.177.34)
kuśalaṃ paripṛṣṭāste sarvataḥ sukhamūcire emaṃ satkṛtya medhāvī pitṛloka maheśvaraḥ
Asked about their welfare, they replied that all was well, everywhere, in comfort. Having thus honored them, that wise lord of the world of the ancestors --
Verse 35 (padma.6.177.35)
hetumāgamane pṛcchatte ca tasmai nyavedayan viddhi kīnāśanātha tvaṃ śeṣaparyaṃkaśāyinā
asked them the cause of their coming, and they related it to him: 'O lord of the departed, know that we have been sent to your presence by him who reclines upon the couch of Shesha,'
Verse 36 (padma.6.177.36)

'-- that same Shauri, to give you instruction. Through our mouths, the god asks after your welfare;'
Verse 37 (padma.6.177.37)

na tena mūrdhnā saṃbhāvya dadhyau kiṃcana cetasā vimuktānnirayātsarvāṃstānvilokya madotkaṭān
Yama, without pondering it in his mind even for a moment, but honoring it with bowed head, released all of them from hell, seeing them overflowing with intoxicated joy;
Verse 39 (padma.6.177.39)
sa tairanugataḥ sarvairviṣṇorāyatanaṃ tataḥ yayau sa varayānena yatrāste dugdhavāridhiḥ
and, followed by all of them, he then went, upon an excellent celestial chariot, to the very abode of Vishnu, where the ocean of milk lies.
Verse 40 (padma.6.177.40)

gazed upon again and again by Shri with loving, unwavering eyes; surrounded and attended by yogis, their pupils motionless in deep meditation;
Verse 43 (padma.6.177.43)

stūyamānaṃ maheṃdreṇa parājetuṃ virodhinaḥ āmnāyavacasāmaṃte brahmaṇo niḥsṛtairmukhāt
praised by great Indra, so that his adversaries might be vanquished; extolled at the culmination of the sacred scriptures, by words that had issued from the very mouth of Brahma,
Verse 44 (padma.6.177.44)
mūrtimadbhirvacobhiśca gīyamānaṃ guṇotkaram saṃprītaṃ cāpyudāsīnamapi sarvāsu yoniṣu
as though embodied; that mass of virtues, sung of by such words; ever affectionate, and yet indifferent, toward all forms of life,
Verse 45 (padma.6.177.45)
yogasaṃcitapuṇyānāṃ yaugapadyena jaṃtuṣu vilokamānamātmānamakhilaṃ sacarācaram
manifesting himself simultaneously among all creatures, according to the merit accumulated by them through yoga; beholding his own Self as the entire universe, moving and unmoving;
Verse 46 (padma.6.177.46)
āmodyannamālokairātmānaṃ dīptipūritaiḥ ābibhrāṇaṃ vapurvyāpi dyotitaṃ bhoginasviṣā
delighting his own self with radiant glances filled with splendor; bearing an all-pervading form, illumined by the light of the serpent Shesha,
Verse 47 (padma.6.177.47)
iṃdīvaradalaśyāmaṃ jyotsnayeva nabhastalam vilokya taṃ sa tuṣṭāva dhiyā bahulayānataḥ
dark as the petal of a blue lotus, as the vault of heaven illumined by moonlight. Beholding him, Yama, with a mind humbled by manifold reverence, praised him:
Verse 48 (padma.6.177.48)
yama uvāca namaḥ samastanirmāṇanirmalībhūtacetase vada nodgīrṇavedāya viśvarūpāya vedhase
Yama said: Salutations to you, whose consciousness has become utterly purified through creating the entire universe; who spoke forth the Vedas; who is of universal form; the Ordainer,
Verse 49 (padma.6.177.49)
balavegasudurddharṣa dānaveṃdra madadruhe namaḥ sthitau ca satvāya viśvādhārāya viṣṇave
who crushed the pride of the danava lord, most difficult to assail in strength and speed; salutations to you, O Vishnu, who is the very essence of preservation, the support of the universe,
Verse 50 (padma.6.177.50)
namaḥ pātakasaṃghāta jiṣṇave'khiladehinām īṣadunmīlallālāṭanetrāgniprabhavārciṣe
salutations to you, the conqueror of the very mass of sin belonging to all embodied beings; whose radiance arises from the fire of the eye upon your forehead, slightly opened;
Verse 51 (padma.6.177.51)
tvaṃ hi sarvasya lokasya gururātmā maheśvaraḥ visṛjya vaiṣṇavānsarvānatastvamanukaṃpase
you indeed are the guru and the Self of every world, the great Lord; having released all your Vaishnava devotees, you show them your compassion,
Verse 52 (padma.6.177.52)
pervading the whole universe, amplified by your own maya; yet you are not overcome by it, nor by the qualities born of it,
Verse 53 (padma.6.177.53)
aṃtarāvartamāno'pi na tābhyāmabhibhūyase dṛśā viṣayavartinyā nigrahītamanā api
though moving within it, you are not subdued by them; though your mind seems seized by the sight that dwells among sense-objects,
Verse 54 (padma.6.177.54)
tayā phalābhigāminyā ātmanyevābhilīyase na tavāsti mahimnoṃto yathā niravadhiḥ svayam
by that very act of pursuing fruits, you dissolve back only into your own Self. There is no end to your greatness, just as you yourself are without limit.
Verse 55 (padma.6.177.55)
maunamevātrayuktaṃ me viṣayo'si kathaṃ girām iti stutvā tato vākyamidamāha kṛtāṃjali
Silence alone befits me here -- how could you ever be the true object of my words? Having thus praised him, he then, with joined palms, spoke these further words:
Verse 56 (padma.6.177.56)
viniyogādamī yuktā dehino nirguṇā mayā samādiśa yadanyanme kāryamasti jagadguro
'By your own command these embodied souls, devoid of qualities, have been dealt with by me. Command me further, O Guru of the universe, whatever other task remains for me.'
Verse 57 (padma.6.177.57)
iti vijñāpitastena tamāha madhusūdanaḥ meghagaṃbhīrayā vācā siṃcanniva sudhārasaiḥ
Thus addressed by him, Madhusudana spoke to him, in a voice deep as thunder, as though sprinkling him with the very nectar of immortality:
Verse 58 (padma.6.177.58)
pāpāduddhārya te loko mayā samayavartinā tvayi vinyastabhāro'haṃ nānuśocāmi dehinaḥ
'The world has been delivered from sin by me, who abide within the bounds of time; having placed the burden upon you, I do not grieve for embodied beings.'
Verse 59 (padma.6.177.59)
tadācara nijaṃ karma prayāhi svaṃ niketanam śrībhagavānuvāca ityuktvāṃtardadhe devaḥ so'pi svapuramāyayau
