Verse 1 (padma.6.18.1)

śrīnārada uvāca atha jālaṁdharaḥ prāha rakṣātmānamitaḥ śivam śivādya tvāṁ kṣipāmyāśu yatrāste madhusūdanaḥ

Shri Narada said: Then Jalandhara, [challenging] Shiva to defend himself, said: 'O Shiva, today I shall swiftly cast you to where Madhusudana dwells.

Verse 2 (padma.6.18.2)

paścādbrahmāṇamākṛṣya pātayiṣyāmi sāgare dhṛteṣu yuṣmāsu yadā tadā sarveśvaro hyaham

'Then, dragging Brahma out too, I shall cast him into the ocean; once you both are captive, then I alone shall become the Lord of all.'

Verse 3 (padma.6.18.3)

ityuktvā sainyasaṁbhāraṁ nyasya śuṁbhāsurādiṣu bhaṭairguptaṁ niśuṁbhādyaiścaturaṁgamanaṁtakam

Having said this, entrusting the whole burden of his army to Shumbhasura and the others, protected by warriors like Nishumbha, his boundless four-fold army —

Verse 4 (padma.6.18.4)

śuṁbho niśuṁbhaḥ pheṁkāro pheruṁḍo dhūmralocanaḥ keturbiḍālajaṁghaśca rāhurdurvāraṇo yamaḥ

Shumbha, Nishumbha, Phenkara, Pherunda, Dhumralochana, Ketu, Bidalajangha, Rahu, Durvarana, Yama,

Verse 5 (padma.6.18.5)

kālāsuro'tha lavaṇo bhūmiretoṁdhakāsuraḥ raktavīryādayaścaṁḍī cāmuṁḍī daityapuṁgavāḥ

Kalasura, Lavana, Bhumiretas, Andhakasura, Raktavirya and the rest, Chandi, Chamundi — these were the foremost demons.

Verse 6 (padma.6.18.6)

sarvānevodyatāndṛṣṭvā saṁkhye dānavapuṁgavān rurudhuḥ samare rājanvīrabhadrādayo gaṇāḥ

Seeing all these foremost demons thus ready for battle, O king, Virabhadra and the other attendants blocked them in that fight.

Verse 7 (padma.6.18.7)

tato yuddhamabhūddhoraṁ tumulaṁ lomaharṣaṇam pataṁti prathamā yatra daityāścāpi kṣatāturāḥ

Then a terrible, tumultuous, hair-raising battle ensued, in which the wounded, afflicted demons began to fall first.

Verse 8 (padma.6.18.8)

atha śuṁbhādibhirdaityaiḥ sarvaśastrairmahāmṛdhe hatāḥ peturgaṇāścānye palāyāṁcakrire nṛpa

Then, struck down by all the weapons of Shumbha and the other demons in that great fray, other attendants fell too, and, O king, some fled.

Verse 9 (padma.6.18.9)

gaṇānvijitya samare rurudhurdānavāḥ śivam varṣaṁtaḥ śaradhārābhirghanā merugiriṁ yathā

Having conquered the attendants in battle, the demons surrounded Shiva, raining down showers of arrows like dense clouds upon Mount Meru.

Verse 10 (padma.6.18.10)

tataḥ pinākamākṛṣya vṛṣabhopari bhairavaḥ jaghāna bāṇanivahairdānavānsamarāṁgaṇe tīkṣṇāgraistu kṣurapraughairdānavānahanadbalī

Then, drawing his bow Pinaka upon his bull, that terrifying one struck down the demons on the battlefield with masses of arrows; with sharp-tipped razor-shafts the mighty one destroyed the demons.

Verse 11 (padma.6.18.11)

kecinnaṁdiprahāreṇa petuḥ saṁgrāmamūrdhani bāṇaiśca jarjarānkṛtvā śuṁbhādīnvṛṣabhadhvajaḥ

Some fell at the head of the battle from Nandi's blows; and the Bull-bannered one, having shattered Shumbha and the others with arrows,

Verse 12 (padma.6.18.12)

śeṣaṁ sainyaṁ jaghānāśu śastrāstraiḥ samarāṁgaṇe gajairnarairhayairvyāptaṁ patitaiḥ samarāṁgaṇam

swiftly struck down the rest of the army with weapons and missiles on that battlefield too; the battlefield, thronged with fallen elephants, men, and horses —

Verse 13 (padma.6.18.13)

babhūva vajranirbhinnaiḥ parvatairiva bhūtalam atha māyāmayīṁ gaurīṁ vidadhe siṁdhunaṁdanaḥ

became like an earth strewn with mountains shattered by the thunderbolt. Then the ocean's son fashioned an illusory Gauri,

Verse 14 (padma.6.18.14)

sauṁdaryaguṇasaṁpannāṁ sarvālaṁkārabhūṣitām jayāṁ māyāmayīṁ kṛtvā samuvācābdhinaṁdanaḥ

endowed with beauty and every virtue, adorned with every ornament; having made this illusory 'Jaya,' the ocean's son said to her —

Verse 15 (padma.6.18.15)

gaccha tvaṁ purato rudraṁ vimohaya raṇe drutam ityuktvā daityapatinā yayau māyāmayī jayā

'Go before Rudra and swiftly bewilder him in that battle.' Thus commanded by the demon-lord, that illusory Jaya went.

Verse 16 (padma.6.18.16)

raṇe gatvā śivasyāgre muktakeśī ruroda ha pṛṣṭā hareṇa sā prāha mānasottaraparvatāt

Going to the battlefield, before Shiva, her hair unbound, she wept; questioned by Hara, she said: 'From Manasottara mountain,

Verse 17 (padma.6.18.17)

hṛtā tava priyā deva pārvatī siṁdhusūnunā śrutveti vacanaṁ tasyāstāmuvāca vṛṣadhvajaḥ

'the ocean's son has carried off your beloved Parvati, O God!' Hearing her words, the Bull-bannered one said to her —

Verse 18 (padma.6.18.18)

jaye tvamehi vṛṣabhaṁ tvāṁ hariṣyaṁti dānavāḥ tato vṛṣabhamāruhya jayā cāliṁgya śaṁkaram

'Come, Jaya, mount the bull — the demons might carry you off too.' Then, mounting the bull, embracing Shankara, Jaya

Verse 19 (padma.6.18.19)

prāha prayāmi pārvatyā na jīvāmi vinā hara caṁdraṁ śaṁbhujaṭāviṣṭaṁ gṛhītvā vṛṣabhāddrutam

said: 'I am going to Parvati, O Hara — I cannot live without her.' Swiftly seizing the moon lodged in Shambhu's own matted locks, from the bull,

Verse 20 (padma.6.18.20)

avārohata sā māyā māyāṣvakto raṇaṁ yayau tato gaurīṁ hṛtāṁ śrutvā ciṁtayāmāsa śaṁkaraḥ

that illusory being descended, and, freed from the illusion, went off into battle. Then, hearing that Gauri had been carried off, Shankara grew troubled —

Verse 21 (padma.6.18.21)

daityamāyāpariṣvakto nātmānaṁ bubudhe nṛpa etasminnaṁtare prāptaḥ sainyena mahatā vṛtaḥ

O king, enveloped by the demon's illusion, he did not recognize his own true state. Meanwhile the ocean-born, surrounded by a great army,

Verse 22 (padma.6.18.22)

māyāmṛḍānīṁ svarathe nidhāyārṇavajaḥ śivam jālaṁdharajaye tadvadāsīdvāditranisvanaḥ

placed an illusory Mridani in his own chariot and brought her before Shiva; and, as at Jalandhara's own victory, a sound of instruments rose up,

Verse 23 (padma.6.18.23)

cacāla vasudhā yena pratinedurmahīdharāḥ harasya darśayāmāsa pārvatīṁ siṁdhunaṁdanaḥ

by which the earth shook, and the mountains echoed in response. The ocean's son showed Parvati to Hara.

Verse 24 (padma.6.18.24)

rudro'pyarirathasthāṁ tāṁ dadarśa nijavallabhām viyogavidhurāṁ dīnāṁ tanvīmāturalocanām

Rudra too beheld her, seated in his enemy's chariot, his own beloved, wasted with separation, wretched, slender, her eyes full of anguish,

Verse 25 (padma.6.18.25)

hā nātha priya rudreti prajalpaṁtīṁ punaḥ punaḥ prauḍhavairirathe dṛṣṭvā pākhaṁḍisthāṁ yathā śrutim

crying again and again, 'Alas, my lord! My beloved Rudra!' Seeing her thus in his mighty enemy's chariot, as if seeing sacred scripture in the mouth of a heretic,

Verse 26 (padma.6.18.26)

gaurīṁ dadhyau tathā sthāṇuḥ kathaṁ prāpyā priyā mayā vilalāpa tataḥ śaṁbhurdaityamāyāvimohitaḥ

Sthanu thought thus of Gauri: 'How shall I obtain my beloved once more?' Then Shambhu, bewildered by the demon's illusion, began to lament —

Verse 27 (padma.6.18.27)

moho me dānavaiḥ kāṁte hṛtāsi tvāṁ kathaṁ priye śokamohaplutaṁ dṛṣṭvā śaṁkaraṁ sāgarātmajaḥ

'My love, the demons have deluded me — how have you been taken from me?' Seeing Shankara thus overwhelmed by grief and delusion, the ocean's son —

Verse 28 (padma.6.18.28)

jagāda prahasanvākyaṁ kaścitkāruṇyavānyathā sarvapramāṇaśūnyo'si smara śṛṁgāravarjitaḥ

said, laughing, as if he were compassionate: 'You have become utterly without any dignity, devoid even of Kama's own charm.

Verse 29 (padma.6.18.29)

īśvaro'pi varākastvaṁ saṁjātoṁbikayā vinā mā rodīrhi virūpākṣa dadāmi tava vallabhām

'Even being the Lord, without Ambika you have become a wretched thing. Do not weep, O misshapen-eyed one — I shall give you back your beloved.

Verse 30 (padma.6.18.30)

rakṣito'si mayā rudra gṛhītvā pārvatīṁ raṇāt ityuktvā giriśaṁ tūrṇamuttārya svarathādumām

'O Rudra, taking Parvati from the battle, I have spared you.' Having said this, swiftly helping Uma down from his own chariot, [he brought her] to Girisha,

Verse 31 (padma.6.18.31)

sainyaṁ saṁpreṣayāmāsa śaṁkarābhimukhaṁ kila haro'pi vṛṣabheṇāśu tatsainyaṁ samadhāvata

and sent his army forward against Shankara. Hara too, swiftly upon his bull, rushed at that army,

Verse 32 (padma.6.18.32)

gṛhītuṁ pārvatīṁ pāhi trāhitrāhīti jalpatīm yāvadgṛhṇāti tāṁ gaurīṁ kareṇa vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ

to take that Parvati, who cried, 'Save me, save me!' As soon as the Bull-bannered one reached to take that Gauri with his hand,

Verse 33 (padma.6.18.33)

tāvacchuṁbhāsuraḥ śīghraṁ gṛhītvā cāṁbare sthitaḥ śūlaṁ mumoca balavānhaṁtuṁ śuṁbhāsuraṁ haraḥ

just then Shumbhasura swiftly snatched her away and, standing in the sky, that mighty one hurled a spear to slay Hara.

Verse 34 (padma.6.18.34)

śuṁbhena sā parityaktā śūlopari papāta ha rudaṁtī cārusarvāṁgī tyaktā śūlena saṁyutā

Abandoned by Shumbha, she fell upon that very spear; weeping, her whole lovely form pierced through by the spear,

Verse 35 (padma.6.18.35)

patitā śaṁkarasyāgre tathetyuktvā mamāra ca māyāgaurīṁ mṛtāṁ dṛṣṭvā śokamohapariplutaḥ

fallen before Shankara, she cried 'So be it' and died. Seeing that illusory Gauri dead, overwhelmed with grief and delusion,

Verse 36 (padma.6.18.36)

hā priyeti rudanrudraḥ papāta bhuvi mūrcchitaḥ kṣaṇaṁ saṁjñāmavāpyātha raṇabhūmāvumāpatiḥ śaśāpa śuṁbhapramukhāngaurī yuṣmānhaniṣyati

crying, 'Alas, my beloved,' Rudra fell to the ground unconscious. Regaining his senses in a moment, on that battlefield, the Lord of Uma,

Verse 37 (padma.6.18.37)

nārada uvāca atha śuṁbhādayo daityā raṇe devyā nipātitāḥ maheśvarasya śāpena gate maṁnvatare nṛpa

cursed Shumbha and the others: 'Gauri herself shall slay you!' Narada said: Then, O king, when that age had passed, by Maheshvara's curse,

Verse 38 (padma.6.18.38)

śapitvā tānrurodātha jalpannirgatya śaṁkaraḥ kva gatāsi priyetyuktvā duḥkhitaṁ māṁ raṇāṁgaṇe

Shumbha and the other demons were struck down in that battle by the Goddess. Having cursed them, Shankara wept and came out, lamenting, 'Where have you gone, my beloved,' speaking thus in sorrow, on that battlefield —

Verse 39 (padma.6.18.39)

ratiṁ tyaktvā viyogārtaḥ śrīkaṁṭho'haṁ tvayā kṛtaḥ vāsudevo'pi māṁ tyaktaṁ na jānāti tvayā priye

'Abandoning your very love, you have made me, Shrikantha, so tormented by separation. Even Vasudeva does not know that I have been forsaken by you, my dear.

Verse 40 (padma.6.18.40)

yajñe dakṣasyāgnikuṁḍe śiro devi hutaṁ tvayā bhūyo hi bhavatī labdhā kathaṁ tyajasi māṁ punaḥ

'In the fire-pit of Daksha's sacrifice, O Goddess, you offered up your own head; having regained you once more, why do you abandon me again now?

Verse 41 (padma.6.18.41)

utiṣṭhotiṣṭha cārvaṁgi girije māṁ prabodhaya atrāṁtare śivaṁ jñātvā daityamāyāvimohitam

'Rise, rise, O lovely Girija — awaken me!' Meanwhile, knowing Shiva to be bewildered by the demon's illusion,

Verse 42 (padma.6.18.42)

devatāgaṇamadhyastho hyaṁtarikṣādupāgamat vilapaṁtamuvācedamadṛśyaḥ kamalāsanaḥ

Brahma, seated invisibly among the host of gods, descended from the sky and said this to him, as he lamented —

Verse 43 (padma.6.18.43)

brahmovāca tvaṁ śokamohapitṛmātṛvivarjito'si duḥkhaṁ sukhaṁ sutakalatraripurna cāsti jāto'si naiva janakena janiṣyamāṇastvaṁ manyase ṛṣigaṇaiśca kuto vimohaḥ

Brahma said: 'You are free from grief, delusion, father, and mother; you have neither sorrow nor joy, neither son nor wife nor enemy; you were never born of any father, nor shall you ever be born — how do you think of yourself thus, even amid the very hosts of sages? Whence this delusion?

Verse 44 (padma.6.18.44)

eko'si nātha bahudhā kṛtavigraho'si sūryo yathā jaladhivīciṣu dṛśyamānaḥ dhyānena yāṁti yaminastava pādamūlaṁ rūpaṁ paraṁ duravabodhamavācyameva

'You are one, my lord, yet you appear in many forms, as the sun is seen reflected in the ocean's waves; ascetics reach the very base of your feet through meditation alone; your supreme form is beyond comprehension, beyond all words.

Verse 45 (padma.6.18.45)

naiṣā priyā tava samānatayā vipannā jālaṁdhareṇa racitāṁ jahi deva māyām sā pārvatī kamalakośagatā hi śaṁbho yuddhasva vairinivahaṁ jahi pāhi cāsmān

'This is not your true beloved, fallen only through mere resemblance — cast off this illusion woven by Jalandhara, O God! The real Parvati is safe within the very calyx of a lotus, O Shambhu — fight the mass of your enemies, slay them, and protect us!'

Verse 46 (padma.6.18.46)

śrutveti brahmaṇo vākyamavabuddho maheśvaraḥ jñātvā tāṁ dānavīmāyāṁ mumoca mahatī śilām

Hearing Brahma's words, Maheshvara became fully aware; recognizing that demonic illusion for what it was, he hurled a massive boulder,

Verse 47 (padma.6.18.47)

tayā jaghāna samare daityakoṭiśatatrayam tato vṛṣabhamāruhya krodhena mahatā nṛpa

and with it slew three hundred million demons in that battle. Then, mounting his bull, O king, with great fury,

Verse 48 (padma.6.18.48)

dhanuḥ pinākaṁ yuddhāya dhūrjaṭirjagṛhe śarān atha māyāparityaktaṁ śarvamālokya siṁdhujaḥ

Dhurjati took up his bow Pinaka and arrows for battle. Then, seeing Sharva freed from that illusion, the ocean-born —

Verse 49 (padma.6.18.49)

sureśamohanaṁ māyājālamatyadbhutaṁ nṛpa anyadāviścakārāśu bhṛśaṁ māyāmahābalam

O king, swiftly wove yet another web of illusion, exceedingly wondrous, mind-bewildering, and most powerful.

Verse 50 (padma.6.18.50)

jālaṁdharaḥ koṭibhujo babhūva vṛkṣāstraśastrairyuyudhe vṛṣāṁkam athāṁtarāle pṛthivīṁ cakāra samudrasūnurgiridhātumaṁḍitām

Jalandhara became one of ten million arms, fighting with tree-weapons against the Bull-bannered one; and meanwhile the ocean's son fashioned a whole earth, adorned with mountain-minerals —

Verse 51 (padma.6.18.51)

devatāyatanai ramyairnānāpuṣpasamākulaiḥ maṁḍitāṁ nṛpa bhūmiṁ ca cakārodadhinaṁdanaḥ nṛtyaṁti yatrāpsaraso menakādyā manoharā

O king, the ocean's son adorned that earth with lovely temples of the gods and many kinds of flowers, where enchanting apsaras like Menaka danced.

Verse 52 (padma.6.18.52)

vismṛtya śaṁbhustadapāsyakārmukaṁ sadyaḥ pratasthe vṛṣabhopari sthitaḥ vāditragītairbhuvi mohito bhṛśaṁ daityeṁdramāyāmaya tāṁḍavena saḥ

Shambhu, forgetting himself, casting aside his bow, set out at once upon that earth, mounted on his bull, utterly bewitched by songs and instruments, and by the demon-king's illusory dance.

Verse 53 (padma.6.18.53)

vimohitaṁ vīkṣya vṛṣasthitaṁ haraṁ nityaṁ samudraḥ saha tāṁḍavena gītena vādyena ca nṛtyalīlayā nanāda rūpī tarasā vimohitum

Seeing Hara thus bewildered, mounted on his bull, that ocean, taking bodily form together with the dance, song, instruments, and dance-sport, roared aloud swiftly, to bewilder him further.

Verse 54 (padma.6.18.54)

jaṁtūnkṣiptvodadhau tāṁśca sahasraṁ sa tatotsavaḥ kva ca tā devatāḥ sarvāḥ kva naṁdipramukhā gaṇāḥ

Casting a thousand living creatures into the ocean, that festival went on; where now were all those gods? Where now were Nandi and the other attendants?

Verse 55 (padma.6.18.55)

api tvaṁ mānanīyo'si mohito daityamāyayā kimadya śaṁbho bhagavannupekṣyate udīryacakraṁ jaṭharasthitaṁ ca

Yet you are still worthy of honor, though bewildered by the demon's illusion. 'Why, O Shambhu, Lord, is this now being disregarded — the discus rising up, lodged within his very belly;

Verse 56 (padma.6.18.56)

'O Mahesha, this discus was made for this one's very slaying — yet in this battle Jalandhara is not being destroyed!' By this word of Krishna, remembering himself as the Lord,

Verse 57 (padma.6.18.57)

āruhya vṛṣabhaṁ śīghramājagāma mahāraṇam tamāgataṁ śivaṁ dṛṣṭvā sarvasainyasamāvṛtaḥ

mounting his bull, he swiftly came to that great battlefield. Seeing Shiva thus arrived, together with his whole army,

Verse 58 (padma.6.18.58)

rurodha samare rājankruddho jālaṁdharo'suraḥ harasya kupitasyāsītsṛṣṭisaṁhārakārakam

O king, the enraged demon Jalandhara blocked him in that battle. That form of enraged Hara, which was itself the very cause of creation and dissolution —

Verse 59 (padma.6.18.59)

rūpaṁ tṛtīyanetrāgnau dānavāḥ śalabhā yathā rupaṁ dṛṣṭvā bhagavato raudrajvālāmayaṁ nṛpa

in the fire of his third eye the demons began to be consumed like moths. O king, seeing the Lord's terrifying, blazing form,

Verse 60 (padma.6.18.60)

śuṁbhādayastadā daityā rāhuprabhṛtayaśca ye rudraṁ nirīkṣya saṁtrastāḥ pātālaṁ viviśurbhayāt

Shumbha and the other demons, and Rahu and the rest, seeing Rudra, terrified, entered the netherworld in fear.

Verse 61 (padma.6.18.61)

Seeing many warrior-soldiers slain in that great battle, and seeing Shumbha and the other survivors also flee,

Verse 62 (padma.6.18.62)

tadā jālaṁdharaḥ saṁkhye eko giririvasthitaḥ paramārthaṁ rudrarūpaṁ hṛṣṭaḥ sākṣādvilokayan

then Jalandhara alone stood in that battle like a mountain, joyfully beholding directly Rudra's own supreme, true form.

Verse 63 (padma.6.18.63)

tato jālaṁdharaḥ prāha mahādevaṁ prahasya ca rūpaṁ saṁhara yena tvaṁ dahase sacarācaram

Then Jalandhara said to Mahadeva, laughing: 'Withdraw that form of yours, by which you burn all moving and unmoving beings.

Verse 64 (padma.6.18.64)

śastreṇa kuru saṁgrāmaṁ tyaktvā yogabalaṁ nijam iti jālaṁdharavacaḥ śrutvovāca tataḥ śivaḥ

'Fight with weapons, abandoning your own yogic power.' Hearing Jalandhara's words, Shiva said —

Verse 65 (padma.6.18.65)

varaṁ varaya daityeśa prīto'smi tava karmaṇā īdṛkṣamapi madrūpaṁ dṛṣṭvā yannirbhayo'dhunā

'Choose a boon, O lord of demons — I am pleased by this deed of yours, that, even having seen such a form of mine, you now remain fearless.

Verse 66 (padma.6.18.66)

api brahmāṁḍamakhilaṁ madrūpasyāsya dānava tejaso vīkṣaṇenālaṁ tatra tvamasi nirbhayaḥ

'O demon, not even the whole universe can bear the mere sight of this form's radiance — yet there you stand fearless.'

Verse 67 (padma.6.18.67)

nārada uvāca iti śaṁbhoḥ prasādaṁ ca matvā saṁsāranispṛhaḥ jālaṁdharo harādvavre muktiṁ sāyujyatāṁ parām

Narada said: Considering this Shambhu's grace, and, freed from all worldly attachment, Jalandhara asked Hara for liberation, the supreme state of union.

Verse 68 (padma.6.18.68)

śrīmahādeva uvāca divyaṁ dehamidaṁ daitya bhogasiddhiyutaṁ tava vṛṁdā manoharaṁ ramyamihasthaṁ kālamaśnute

Sri Mahadeva said: 'O demon, this divine body of yours, endowed with every enjoyment and accomplishment — Vrinda, lovely and delightful, still awaits your time.

Verse 69 (padma.6.18.69)

muhūrtaṁ paramātmānaṁ tamekākinamavyayam abuddhvā tyajase mūrkha kathaṁ tvaṁ muktimicchasi

'Without knowing that supreme, unique, imperishable Self, even for a single moment, O fool, how do you desire liberation?

Verse 70 (padma.6.18.70)

'She is now hard to obtain, and that state too is hard to obtain. Between heaven and liberation, choose whatever is best, within the round of existence.'

Verse 72 (padma.6.18.72)

jālaṁdhara uvāca devamuktapadaṁ labhyaṁ kṛtakṛtyena kenacit idānīṁ kṛtakṛtyo'smi yattvāṁ paśye tvayā hataḥ

Jalandhara said: 'That state, bestowed by a god, is attained only by one who has fulfilled all his tasks; and now I too am fulfilled — for I behold you, and by you I am to be slain.'

Verse 73 (padma.6.18.73)

śiva uvāca matsthānaṁ paramaṁ kṣetraṁ yadi tvaṁ gaṁtumutsukaḥ tarhi māṁ kopayasvāśu daityaṁ hatvā dṛḍhaiḥ śaraiḥ

Shiva said: 'If you are eager to go to my supreme abode, my supreme realm, then swiftly provoke my anger — by slaying this demon with firm arrows.

Verse 74 (padma.6.18.74)

tato'haṁ tvāṁ haniṣyāmi matsthānaṁ yāsyase'nagha maheśvaravacaḥ śrutvā prāha jālaṁdharaḥ śivam

'Then I shall slay you, and you shall attain my own abode, O sinless one.' Hearing Maheshvara's words, Jalandhara said to Shiva —

Verse 75 (padma.6.18.75)

tvayi sarvajagatpūjye pūrvaṁ na praharāmyaham

'Against you, worshipped by the whole world, I shall not strike first.'

Verse 76 (padma.6.18.76)

nārada uvāca evamukto jaghānāśu siṁdhujaṁ viśikhaiḥ śivaḥ te śarāḥ siṁdhuputrasya dehalagnā vibhāṁti ca

Narada said: Thus addressed, Shiva swiftly struck the ocean-born with his arrows; those arrows, lodged in the ocean-son's body, shone forth

Verse 77 (padma.6.18.77)

yathā lohagiriprāṁte veṇavo vahnidīpitāḥ jālaṁdharo harasyāṁgaṁ pūrayāmāsa mārgaṇaiḥ

like bamboo canes blazing with fire at the edge of an iron mountain. Jalandhara too filled Hara's body with his own arrows.

Verse 78 (padma.6.18.78)

taiḥ śaraiḥ śuśubhe rudro yathā khaṁ khecarākulam jālaṁdhareśayoryuddhaṁ tathā dvaṁdvamabhūnnṛpa

By those arrows Rudra shone forth, as the sky fills with birds. Thus, O king, a duel arose between Jalandhara and Ishvara.

Verse 79 (padma.6.18.79)

harādanyena haṁtāsti na soḍhānyo'rṇavātmajāt girikoṭisahasraistu tadā pṛthvīpuṭoddhṛtaiḥ

None but Hara could slay him, and none but the ocean's son could bear such blows. Then, with thousands of millions of mountains, uprooted from the very folds of the earth,

Verse 80 (padma.6.18.80)

pūrayāmāsa samare siṁdhujaḥ pārvatīpatim tataḥ śūlena nihato rudreṇorasi dānavaḥ

the ocean-born filled Parvati's husband in that battle. Then, struck in the chest by Rudra's trident, that demon

Verse 81 (padma.6.18.81)

niḥsasāra mukhāttasya jvaro jaṁbho bhayaṁkaraḥ sa ca vīrajvaronāma siṁhavaktro narākṛtiḥ

emitted from his mouth a terrible fever named Jambha; and that fever, named Virajvara, lion-faced, human-formed —

Verse 82 (padma.6.18.82)

daityadehādviniṣkrāṁtaṁ dṛṣṭvā siṁhamukhaṁ jvaram huṁkāramakarodghoraṁ śarabhastatra niryayau

seeing that lion-faced fever emerge from the demon's body, he let out a terrible roar; then Sharabha appeared there.

Verse 83 (padma.6.18.83)

śivasya niḥsṛtenāsau śarabheṇa nipātitaḥ ajeyaṁ śaṁkaraṁ dṛṣṭvā vṛṣabheṁdreṇa saṁyutam

By that Sharabha, come forth from Shiva, he was struck down. Seeing the unconquerable Shankara, accompanied by his lordly bull,

Verse 84 (padma.6.18.84)

āyayau vṛṣabhābhyāśe tarasā sāgarātmajaḥ vṛṣaṁ pucche gṛhītvā ca bhrāmayāmāsa cāṁbare

the ocean-born came swiftly near that bull; seizing it by the tail, he whirled it in the sky,

Verse 85 (padma.6.18.85)

jālaṁdharo mahābāhuścikṣepa himavadgirau tatastriśūlamatyugraṁ mumoca girijāpatiḥ

and mighty-armed Jalandhara hurled it upon the Himalaya mountain. Then the Lord of Girija loosed his most fierce trident.

Verse 86 (padma.6.18.86)

taddhastena gṛhītvā ca daityeśaḥ śivasannidhau rathārūḍho dhanurgṛhya kālakedāramabdhijaḥ

Catching it in his hand, in Shiva's very presence, the demon-king, the ocean-born, mounting his chariot, taking up his bow Kalakedara,

Verse 87 (padma.6.18.87)

pūrayāmāsa viśikhaiḥ śivamurvītale sthitam ugraḥ śastrāñcharānchitvā bāṇai rathamacūrṇayat

Verse 88 (padma.6.18.88)

daśayojanavistīrṇaṁ sārathyaśva samanvitam jālaṁro'pi viratho abhyadhāvanmṛdhe śivam

ten yojanas wide, together with its charioteer and horses. Jalandhara too, now chariotless, rushed at Shiva in that fight.

Verse 89 (padma.6.18.89)

tayoryuddhamabhūdghoramadbhutaṁ lomaharṣaṇam taddṛṣṭvā'kāṁḍakalpāṁta śaṁkayā tatra suḥsurāḥ

A terrible, wondrous, hair-raising battle broke out between them; seeing it, the gods there grew fearful, sensing an untimely dissolution of the world.

Verse 90 (padma.6.18.90)

sarvāstraistāvadanyonyaṁ jaghnaturbhīmavikramau padbhiḥ pṛthvīṁ cālayaṁtau kaṁpayaṁtau nabhaḥ svanaiḥ

Those two of terrible valor struck one another with every weapon, shaking the earth with their feet, and making the sky tremble with their roars.

Verse 91 (padma.6.18.91)

athotkaṭaṁ balaṁ dṛṣṭvā dānaveṁdrasya śaṁkaraḥ śastrajālaṁ jahārāśu yogamāyābalena saḥ

Then, seeing the demon-lord's overwhelming might, Shankara swiftly took away all his weapons, by the power of his own yogic illusion.

Verse 92 (padma.6.18.92)

tataḥ koṭibhujo daityo daṁṣṭrā bhīṣaṇalocanaḥ śastrahīno'pi tarasā dhāvamāno haraṁ yayau

viśālakarabaṁdhena babaṁdha samare śivam tatastasya kṛpāṇena ciccheda karakānanam

and bound Shiva in that battle with the grip of his vast, coiling arms. Then, with a knife, they cut off that whole forest of his arms.

Verse 94 (padma.6.18.94)

siṁdhujena bhujākrāṁto rudrobhūnnīlalohitaḥ līlayā yodhayāmāsa raṇe'sau siṁdhunaṁdanaḥ

Gripped by the ocean-born's arms, Rudra became blue-red; the ocean's son fought on there, playfully.

Verse 95 (padma.6.18.95)

chinnahasto'pi yuyudhe svarbhānuḥ śirasā yathā niyuddhena nadīsūnustoṣayāmāsa śaṁkaram

Even with his hands cut off, he fought on, as Svarbhanu fights on with only his head; by that wrestling combat, the river's son satisfied Shankara.

Verse 96 (padma.6.18.96)

parituṣṭo'bravīcchaṁbhurvaraṁ varaya durlabham jālaṁdhareṇaso'pyuktastvaṁ me dehyātmanaḥ padam

Well satisfied, Shambhu said: 'Ask even for a rare boon.' Addressed thus by Jalandhara, he was told: 'Give me your own place.'

Verse 97 (padma.6.18.97)

ityuktvā sabhujo bhūtvā jaghne taṁ muṣṭinorasi tataḥ sudarśanaṁ cakraṁ purā yannirmitaṁ svayam

Having said this, his arms regrown, he struck their chest with his fist. Then that Sudarshana discus, made by himself long ago,

Verse 99 (padma.6.18.99)

mukhādudgīrya taddhaste gṛhītvā tolayadruṣā sūryakoṭisahasrābhaṁ grasaṁtaṁ sacarācaram

disgorging it from his own mouth, taking it in hand, weighing it in fury — radiant as billions upon billions of suns, devouring all moving and unmoving beings —

Verse 100 (padma.6.18.100)

tena cakreṇa ciccheda śiro jālaṁdharasya ca tatastacchīrṣamutplutya gagane śatayojanam

with that discus they severed Jalandhara's head. Then that head, leaping up, flew a hundred yojanas through the sky,

Verse 101 (padma.6.18.101)

daṁṣṭrā śatakarālāsyaṁ svarbhūminayanaṁ ca yat vyāghragatyā tato yātaṁ sadanaṁ brahmaṇo nṛpa

its mouth gaping with a hundred terrible fangs, its eyes like the very worlds of heaven — O king, with a tiger's motion it went right to Brahma's own abode.

Verse 102 (padma.6.18.102)

bhūyaḥ svarge tato dṛṣṭvā mṛḍaḥ śīrṣamadhāvata sravattadrudhiraṁ bhūri prakurvadbhairavasvanam

Then, seeing it again in heaven, Mrida pursued that head, from which much blood flowed and which made a terrifying sound.

Verse 103 (padma.6.18.103)

Then the directions vanished, the very sky dissolved; there was no light of any radiance anywhere; the earth shook with fear.

Verse 104 (padma.6.18.104)

āpataṁtaṁ jaghānāśu rudraścakreṇa tacchiraḥ dvidhā bhūtvātha rājeṁdra papāta himavadgirau

As it came flying, Rudra swiftly struck that head with his discus; split in two, O king of kings, it fell upon the Himalaya mountain.

Verse 105 (padma.6.18.105)

tato jālaṁdharasyāśu śirasaḥ śakale kila viśataḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ paśyatāṁ sma vṛṣākapau

Then at once, from those two halves of Jalandhara's severed head, before the very eyes of all beings, entering into the presence of Vrishakapi,

Verse 106 (padma.6.18.106)

tasya kaṁṭhātsamudbhūtā daityāḥ śatasahasraśaḥ te hatāstena cakreṇa kapardikaraśālinā

from his throat there emerged demons in their hundreds of thousands; they were slain by that same discus, held in the matted-locked one's hand.

Verse 107 (padma.6.18.107)

jālaṁdharakabaṁdhaṁ tannanarta rudhirāruṇam punaḥ punaḥ samudbhūtāstasya kaṁṭhāttu dānavāḥ

That blood-red trunk of Jalandhara went on dancing; again and again demons kept springing forth from his throat,

Verse 108 (padma.6.18.108)

punaḥ punarbalavatā chinnāścakreṇa śaṁbhunā medasā siṁdhuputrasya pūritā sakalā mahī

and again and again they were cut down by Shambhu's mighty discus; the whole earth became filled with the ocean-son's own fat.

Verse 109 (padma.6.18.109)

medinī medasaivaiṣā khyātiṁ prāptā tu pārthiva yatra daityavarasyāsya śoṇitaṁ śailatāṁ gatam

O king, this earth, because of that very fat, became renowned by the name 'Medini'; and where that foremost demon's blood turned to stone,

Verse 110 (padma.6.18.110)

kailāsasyottare bhāge tatrābhūcchoṇitaṁ puram atha māṁsacayāndṛṣṭvā sarvato vyāpya tiṣṭhataḥ

there, on the northern side of Kailasa, arose a city named Shonitapura. Then, seeing those masses of flesh spread out everywhere,

Verse 111 (padma.6.18.111)

tadā sasmāra deveśaścatuḥṣaṣṭigaṇaṁ raṇe vijñānasmaraṇāddevyaḥ saṁprāptāḥ śaṁkarāṁtikam

the Lord of gods then remembered, in that battle, his sixty-four Yogini attendants; through that very act of remembrance, those goddesses arrived in Shankara's presence.

Verse 112 (padma.6.18.112)

kṛtāṁjalipuṭāḥ procuḥ śiva kiṁ karavāmahe

Mahadeva said: 'These heaps of demon flesh, like mountains — devour them together, swiftly. I grant you all my permission.'

Verse 114 (padma.6.18.114)

brāhmī māheśvarī caiva kaumārī vaiṣṇavī tathā vārāhī caiva māheṁdrī sarvāḥ svagaṇaśobhitāḥ

Brahmi, Maheshvari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, and Mahendri too — all of them adorned with their own attendant-hosts,

Verse 115 (padma.6.18.115)

evaṁ śaṁkaranirdiṣṭā devyastā māṁsasaṁcayān krūreṇa cakṣuṣālokya ninyuścādarśanaṁ kṣaṇāt

thus commanded by Shankara, those goddesses, gazing with fierce eyes upon the heaps of flesh, made them vanish from sight in an instant.

Verse 116 (padma.6.18.116)

atha jālaṁdharavapuḥ kṣīṇaṁ krāṁtaṁ tu śaktibhiḥ tābhirgraste śarīre tu tasya dehādviniḥsṛtā

Then Jalandhara's body, weakened and overcome by their powers, its very form seized by them —

Verse 117 (padma.6.18.117)

prabhāsā śaṁkaraṁ prāptā jagāmādarśanaṁ kṣaṇāt tattejaḥ sūryasaṁkāśaṁ layaṁ prāptaṁ maheśvare

a radiance emerged from it, reached Shankara, and vanished from sight in an instant; that sun-like radiance was absorbed into Maheshvara.

Verse 118 (padma.6.18.118)

evaṁ sa vilayaṁ prāptaḥ tridiśāristrilocanāt vṛṇudhvaṁ ca varaṁ sarvāḥ prītaḥ prāha maheśvaraḥ

Thus that enemy of the three worlds was dissolved by the three-eyed one. 'Choose your boons, all of you' — pleased, Maheshvara said.

Verse 119 (padma.6.18.119)

tadā tāḥ sarvayoginyaḥ papracchurjagadīśvaram martyalokeṣu ye lokā bhogamokṣavarepsavaḥ

Then all those Yoginis asked the Lord of the world: 'Those people in the mortal world who desire the boon of enjoyment or liberation,

Verse 120 (padma.6.18.120)

pūjayiṣyaṁti te nityaṁ svagṛhe yoginīgaṇam tatteṣāṁ vāṁchitaṁ sarvaṁ sidhyatāṁ tvatprasādataḥ

'who shall constantly worship the host of Yoginis in their own homes — by your very grace, let all their wishes be fulfilled.'

Verse 121 (padma.6.18.121)

mahādeva uvāca yaḥ kaścitpūjayennityaṁ bhaktibhāvasamanvitaḥ yuṣmadgaṇaṁ ca tasyāhaṁ varado'smi dharātale

Mahadeva said: 'Whoever shall constantly worship your host, endowed with devotion — to him I shall be a boon-giver upon this earth.

Verse 122 (padma.6.18.122)

madbhaktaḥ keśavasyāpi dveṣṭi yo yoginīgaṇam bhairavo'haṁ tadā tasya hariṣye sukṛtaṁ kṛtam

'My own devotee, if he yet hates the host of Yoginis dear to Keshava, then, as Bhairava, I shall take away all the merit he has earned.'

Verse 123 (padma.6.18.123)

iti dattavarā hṛṣṭā yoginyo vibhunā mṛdhe atrāṁtare bhavānīṁ tāṁ sasmāra vṛṣabhaṁ haraḥ

Thus, having been granted this boon by the Lord in that battle, the Yoginis rejoiced. Meanwhile Hara remembered Bhavani and his bull;

Verse 124 (padma.6.18.124)

smṛtamātrā pārvatī sā vṛṣabhaścāgamatkṣaṇāt sakhīgaṇasamāyuktā saṁprāptā haravallabhā

at the mere act of remembrance, Parvati and the bull arrived in that very moment; Hara's beloved arrived, together with her band of companions.

Verse 125 (padma.6.18.125)

saṁtyaktvā bhrāmarīṁ mūrtiṁ harasyārddhaṁ samāruhat girijāsahito rājanmaheśo mumude tataḥ

Casting off her whirling form, she took her place upon the left half of Hara's body; and, O king, Mahesha, together with Girija, then rejoiced greatly.

Verse 126 (padma.6.18.126)

yoginīṁ pratyuvācedaṁ pibadhvaṁ rudhiraṁ nṛpa jālaṁdharakabaṁdhasthaṁ tāḥ śrutvā jahṛṣurbhṛśam

He said to the Yoginis: 'Drink the blood standing within Jalandhara's headless trunk.' Hearing this, they rejoiced greatly.

Verse 127 (padma.6.18.127)

māṁsamedohyasṛkpītvā yoginyo nanṛturmudā tato haraḥ prasanno'bhūttāsāṁ krīḍanavīkṣaṇāt

Having drunk the flesh, fat, and blood, the Yoginis danced with joy; then Hara grew pleased at the sight of their sporting.

Verse 128 (padma.6.18.128)

svayaṁ ca bhairavaṁ rūpaṁ kṛtvā tanmadhyagaḥ papau tīkṣṇadaṁṣṭrā mahākāyāstadāsanyoginī gaṇāḥ

He himself, taking on the form of Bhairava, went into their midst and drank too. Sharp-fanged, huge-bodied, those Yogini-hosts, from that time —

Verse 129 (padma.6.18.129)

grasaṁto'dyāpi māṁsāni kāle cāpi pibaṁtyasṛk tena jālaṁdharo daityo nottiṣṭhati raṇe hataḥ

even today devour flesh and, at certain times, drink blood. For this reason, the demon Jalandhara, once slain in battle, never rises again.

Verse 130 (padma.6.18.130)

tatastatra samājagmurbrahmādyā devatāgaṇāḥ ṛṣayo maruto devā stuvaṁti sma maheśvaram

Then Brahma and the other hosts of deities gathered there; the sages, the Maruts, and the gods began to praise Maheshvara.

Verse 131 (padma.6.18.131)

diśaḥ praseduḥ surabhirvavau maruddivaḥ prapeturbhuvi puṣpavṛṣṭayaḥ kṛtābhiṣekasya ca tasya niḥsvanānsaṁnāditā duṁdubhayo'pi cakrire

The directions grew radiant, a fragrant breeze blew, showers of flowers fell from heaven to earth; and at that consecration, kettle-drums resounded too.

Verse 132 (padma.6.18.132)

upari parimalāṁdhaiḥ susvaraṁ saṁpatadbhirmadhukaranikuraṁ bairuhyamāṇābhareṇa aviralamadhudhārāsārasaṁsiktabhūmiḥ sadasi suravimuktā prāpatatpuṣpavṛṣṭiḥ

From above, blind with fragrance, sweetly humming swarms of bees descending, laden with heavy honey, the ground drenched with an unbroken stream of nectar — in that assembly, a shower of flowers, released by the gods, came pouring down.

Verse 133 (padma.6.18.133)

hate tadā siṁdhusute hareṇa nārācaghātaistrijagattadā babhau prasūnavṛṣṭirnanṛtustadāṁganā jaguśca yakṣāḥ surakinnarādyāḥ

When the ocean's son was slain by Hara's arrow-strokes, the three worlds shone forth in that moment; a shower of blossoms fell, women danced, and Yakshas, gods, Kinnaras and the rest began to sing.

Verse 134 (padma.6.18.134)

śaṁbhurvairijayotthitena yaśasā sphārāṁgakīrtirgiriṁ svaṁ bheje surasiddhacāraṇagaṇaiḥ saṁstūyamānaḥ sadā gaurī cāpi jagāma cāśu giritaḥ śvetaḥ sakhīsaṁvṛtā saṁcakrustvabhisevanaṁ sumanasāṁ varṣeṇa devāṁganā

Shambhu, his fame grown vast from his victory over his enemy, ever praised by hosts of gods, Siddhas, and Charanas, returned to his own mountain. And Gauri too swiftly went from that mountain, fair-complexioned, surrounded by her companions; the celestial women performed a service of worship for her, with a rain of flowers.

Verse 135 (padma.6.18.135)

devo'sau karuṇāmayaḥ suragaṇānsve sve pade sthāpayan prādādanyadapi svakaṁ vasu tato jñātvā patiṁ śaṁkaraḥ kiṁ vaktavyamataḥ paraṁ yadi bhavedīśānukaṁpā parā ko'yaṁ vā tridivo dharātalamidaṁ syādātmasātsarvataḥ

That compassionate god, establishing the gods each in their own place, went on to grant them his own further wealth besides; then, recognizing Shankara once more as her lord — what more need be said, when the Lord's supreme grace is such as this? What then is heaven, or this earth, that would not become wholly one's own, by such grace?

Verse 136 (padma.6.18.136)

devāḥ svarājyamāsādya yathāpūrvaṁ cakāśire bubhujuryajñabhāgāṁste lokapālatvamāśritāḥ

The gods, having regained their own realms, shone forth as before; enjoying their sacrificial shares once more, they took up again their positions as guardians of the world.

Verse 137 (padma.6.18.137)

nārada uvāca iti jālaṁdharasyoktaṁ yathāvadanupūrvaśaḥ caritaṁ lokavīrasya rājannatyadbhutaṁ tava

Narada said: Thus, O king, in due order, has this utterly wondrous tale been told to you — the deed of that hero of the world, Jalandhara.

Verse 138 (padma.6.18.138)

viṣṇustyajati nādyāpi kṣīrābdhiṁ yadvaśo nṛpa sarvo'pi bhuṁkte svaṁ karma karma tadviddhyasaṁśayam

O king, even today Vishnu does not leave the Ocean of Milk, because he is bound by that very episode; everyone reaps the fruit of their own deeds — know this, without doubt, as karma itself.

Verse 139 (padma.6.18.139)

tubhyaṁ duḥkhanirāsāya proktamākhyānamuttamam yāvaddehosti karmāṇi sukhaduḥkhāni karmataḥ

This excellent tale has been told for the removal of your sorrow; as long as one has a body, pleasure and pain occur according to one's own deeds.

Verse 140 (padma.6.18.140)

dehī bhuṁkte vaśo rājantrāṇaṁ na jñānataḥ param kṛṣṇādīnāṁ dehabaṁdhe sukhaduḥkhādi vartate

O king, the embodied soul remains subject to enjoyment; there is no protection greater than knowledge. Even for beings like Krishna, within the bondage of the body, pleasure and pain occur.

Verse 141 (padma.6.18.141)

tatretareṣāṁ kiṁ vācyaṁ ye vairāgyaparāṅmukhāḥ jñātvedṛśīṁ karmagatiṁ sarvebhyo balavattamām

What then need be said of others, who turn their faces away from dispassion? Knowing this course of karma to be the mightiest of all forces,

Verse 142 (padma.6.18.142)

dhīro bhava pratīkṣasva śubhakarmāgamaṁ punaḥ śatrūnjitvā tu samaye svaṁ rājyaṁ punarāpsyasi

be steadfast, and await the coming of good karma once more; having conquered your enemies in due time, you shall regain your own kingdom again.

Verse 143 (padma.6.18.143)

itihāsamimaṁ śrutvā na duḥkhai paribhūyate dharmārthakāmamokṣāśca yathāvaccātra kīrttitāḥ

Hearing this history, one is not overcome by sorrows; dharma, artha, kama, and moksha have all been duly proclaimed here.

Verse 144 (padma.6.18.144)

svargyaṁ pāpaharaṁ puṇyaṁ śokamohavināśanam brāhmaṇo jñānamāpnoti rājyaṁ prāpnoti kṣatriyaḥ

It is heaven-bestowing, sin-removing, meritorious, and destructive of grief and delusion. The brahmin attains knowledge through it, the kshatriya attains a kingdom,

Verse 145 (padma.6.18.145)

vaiśyaśca bahvīṁ saṁpattiṁ śrutvā śūdraḥ sukhaṁ labhet yo rājā bhraṣṭarājyo'pi rataḥ sanneva satpathi

the vaishya attains abundant wealth, and, hearing it, the shudra attains happiness. Whatever king, even fallen from his kingdom, remains devoted to the good path,

Verse 146 (padma.6.18.146)

sa rājyaṁ punarāpnoti śravaṇānnityamasya tu ākarṇyaitatsatāṁ rājanśrāvyamanyanna rocate

regains his kingdom once more through constantly hearing this. O king, having heard this, nothing else that could be heard pleases the good any longer,

Verse 147 (padma.6.18.147)

kalaṁ ca kokilālāpaṁ rūkṣaṁ dhvāṁkṣarutaṁ yathā ākhyānametadanaghaṁ śrutvā sajjanahṛtpriyaḥ

just as, after the cuckoo's sweet call, the crow's harsh cawing seems unpleasant. This sinless tale, once heard, becomes dear to the hearts of good people.

Verse 148 (padma.6.18.148)

hiraṇyatilavastrādyairdhenubhūmipradānataḥ saṁtoṣayedvācakaṁ tu tasmiṁstuṣṭe phalaṁ labhet

With gold, sesame, cloth, and the like, and with the gift of a cow or land, one should satisfy the reciter — when he is pleased, one obtains the fruit.

Verse 149 (padma.6.18.149)

devatāśca prasīdeyurarcite vācake gurau annadānāni dadyācca brāhmaṇebhyaḥ prapūjayet

When the reciter, the guru, is honored, the gods too become gracious. One should give gifts of food, and worship brahmins;

Verse 150 (padma.6.18.150)

jāyate vijayī nityaṁ putrapautrasamṛddhimān jāyate viṣṇuloke yaḥ śṛṇotyākhyānamuttamam

such a person is ever victorious, and blessed with sons and grandsons; whoever hears this excellent account is born in the world of Vishnu.

Verse 151 (padma.6.18.151)

iti vyājena bho bhūpa tulasyutpattikāraṇam ye śṛṇvaṁti naraśreṣṭhā na teṣāṁ pātakaṁ kvacit

Thus, O king, by this pretext, has the very cause of Tulsi's origin been told; those best of men who hear it shall never incur any sin.

Verse 152 (padma.6.18.152)

tulasīmāhātmyamidaṁ pavitraṁ pāpanāśanam śrutvā tu labhate mokṣamuktvā caiva na saṁśayaḥ

This glory of Tulsi is pure and destructive of sin; hearing it, one attains liberation, and speaking it too, without doubt.

Verse 153 (padma.6.18.153)

svagṛhe ropitā caiva tulasī pāpanāśinī darśanādbrahmahatyāpi naśyate nātra saṁśayaḥ

Tulsi, planted in one's own home, is a destroyer of sin; by the mere sight of her, even the sin of killing a brahmin is destroyed, without doubt.

Verse 154 (padma.6.18.154)

kārtike caiva māghe tu tulasyā pūjayeddharim vaiśākhe tu viśeṣeṇa pūjanaṁ ca hareḥ smṛtam

In Kartika and in Magha, one should worship Hari with Tulsi; in Vaishakha especially, the worship of Hari together with her is prescribed by tradition.

Verse 155 (padma.6.18.155)

ekenaiva pradakṣiṇena sakalaṁ pāpaṁ gataṁ vai sadā ye śūdrā bhuvi saṁti dānaniratāḥ kālena śuddhiṁ gatāḥ tepi syuḥ surapūjanārhatanavaḥ pāpācca dūraṁ gatāḥ ye vai viṣṇujanāśca durlabhatarā hyasminkalau sāṁpratam

By a single circumambulation, all sin is gone forever; even those shudras upon this earth who remain devoted to giving attain purity in time — they too become worthy of the gods' worship and go far from sin; in this Kali age, true devotees of Vishnu have now indeed become exceedingly rare.
