The Glory of the Gita's Eleventh Chapter
Verse 1 (padma.6.185.1)
देव्युवाच। इतिहासोऽयमीशान श्रेयसां साधनं परम् । आकर्ण्य करुणापूर्ण ममकांक्षा प्रवर्त्तते
devyuvāca itihāso'yamīśāna śreyasāṁ sādhanaṁ param ākarṇya karuṇāpūrṇa mamakāṁkṣā pravarttate
The Goddess said: O Ishana, having heard this history, the supreme means of true welfare — O compassionate one, my longing to hear it further now arises.
Verse 2 (padma.6.185.2)
एकादशस्य माहात्म्यमध्यायस्य कथाश्रयम् । व्यावर्णय विरूपाक्ष वक्तॄणां प्रथम प्रभो
ekādaśasya māhātmyamadhyāyasya kathāśrayam vyāvarṇaya virūpākṣa vaktṝṇāṁ prathama prabho
Describe fully, O Virupaksha, foremost of speakers, O Lord, the glory-bearing story of the eleventh chapter.
Verse 3 (padma.6.185.3)
ईश्वर उवाच-। आकर्णय कथां कांते गीतावर्णनसंश्रयाम् । विश्वरूपाभिधानस्य माहात्म्यमपि पावनम्
īśvara uvāca- ākarṇaya kathāṁ kāṁte gītāvarṇanasaṁśrayām viśvarūpābhidhānasya māhātmyamapi pāvanam
Ishvara said: Listen, O beloved, to this story resting on the description of the Gita — the sacred glory of that chapter named the Vishvarupa.
Verse 4 (padma.6.185.4)
अध्यायस्य विशालाक्षि वक्तुं तावन्न शक्यते । सहस्राणि कथाः संति तत्रैका कथ्यते मया
adhyāyasya viśālākṣi vaktuṁ tāvanna śakyate sahasrāṇi kathāḥ saṁti tatraikā kathyate mayā
O wide-eyed one, this chapter‘s glory cannot be told in full — there are thousands of stories about it; I shall tell but one.
Verse 5 (padma.6.185.5)
प्रणीतायास्तटे नद्या मेघंकरमिति श्रुतम् । नगरं गरिमाधार तुंगप्राकारगोपुरम्
praṇītāyāstaṭe nadyā meghaṁkaramiti śrutam nagaraṁ garimādhāra tuṁgaprākāragopuram
On the bank of the river Pranita there was a city known as Meghankara, of great dignity, with lofty ramparts and gateways.
Verse 6 (padma.6.185.6)
विशालाश्रमशालासु स्वर्णस्तंभविभूषितम् । श्रीमद्भिः सुखिभिः शांतैः सदाचारैर्जितेंद्रियैः
viśālāśramaśālāsu svarṇastaṁbhavibhūṣitam śrīmadbhiḥ sukhibhiḥ śāṁtaiḥ sadācārairjiteṁdriyaiḥ
It was adorned with spacious dwelling-halls and golden pillars, filled with the prosperous, the contented, the peaceful, the virtuous, and the self-controlled.
Verse 7 (padma.6.185.7)
अधिष्ठितं जवैश्चारुशृंगाटकमनोहरम् । मणिस्तंभस्फुरत्स्वर्णापणचत्वरशोभितम्
adhiṣṭhitaṁ javaiścāruśṛṁgāṭakamanoharam maṇistaṁbhasphuratsvarṇāpaṇacatvaraśobhitam
It was inhabited by swift-moving people, charming with its beautiful crossroads, and graced with squares gleaming with jeweled pillars and golden shops.
Verse 8 (padma.6.185.8)
पताकाकिंकिणीक्वाण कदंबक कलस्वरम् । वेदाध्ययननिर्घोषवाचालित दिगंतरम्
patākākiṁkiṇīkvāṇa kadaṁbaka kalasvaram vedādhyayananirghoṣavācālita digaṁtaram
It resounded sweetly with the jingling of little bells on clusters of banners, and the far horizons echoed with the sound of Vedic recitation.
Verse 9 (padma.6.185.9)
तूर्यसंघोषणाकीर्ण विशालव्योममंडलम् । पताकापल्लोद्भूतवातनिर्जितविग्रहम्
tūryasaṁghoṣaṇākīrṇa viśālavyomamaṁḍalam patākāpallodbhūtavātanirjitavigraham
The vast sky above it was filled with the blare of festive instruments, and the breeze rising from the fluttering banner-cloths seemed to conquer every form.
Verse 10 (padma.6.185.10)
राजामार्गवरद्वारनारीमंजीरसिंजितैः । वल्लकीवेणुकैर्गीतेर्भाति वाजींद्र हेषितैः
rājāmārgavaradvāranārīmaṁjīrasiṁjitaiḥ vallakīveṇukairgīterbhāti vājīṁdra heṣitaiḥ
It shone with the tinkling anklets of women at the fine gateways along the royal road, with songs of lutes and flutes, and with the neighing of splendid horses.
Verse 11 (padma.6.185.11)
प्रेक्षमाणमिवाभीक्ष्णं दिक्पालानां पुरैः समम् । आस्ते जगत्पतिर्यत्र शार्ङ्गपाणिर्विराजितः
prekṣamāṇamivābhīkṣṇaṁ dikpālānāṁ puraiḥ samam āste jagatpatiryatra śārṅgapāṇirvirājitaḥ
It seemed forever to gaze upon itself in rivalry with the cities of the guardians of the directions — for there, resplendent, dwelt the Lord of the universe, bearer of the Sharnga bow.
Verse 12 (padma.6.185.12)
मूर्तिमत्परमं ब्रह्म जगल्लोचनजीवितम् । लक्ष्मीनयनराजीव पूजिताकारगौरवः
mūrtimatparamaṁ brahma jagallocanajīvitam lakṣmīnayanarājīva pūjitākāragauravaḥ
He was the embodied Supreme Brahman, the very life of the world‘s eyes, his form and dignity honored by the lotus-eyes of Lakshmi.
Verse 13 (padma.6.185.13)
त्रिविक्रमवपुर्मेघश्यामलः कोमलद्युतिः । श्रीवत्सवक्षाराजीव वनमालाविभूषितः
trivikramavapurmeghaśyāmalaḥ komaladyutiḥ śrīvatsavakṣārājīva vanamālāvibhūṣitaḥ
He bore the form of Trivikrama, dark as a rain-cloud, of gentle radiance, marked with the Shrivatsa on his lotus-like breast, adorned with the forest garland.
Verse 14 (padma.6.185.14)
अनेकभूषणोपेतः सरत्न इव वारिधिः । चलत्सौदामिनीदाम सांद्रमेघसमद्युतिः
anekabhūṣaṇopetaḥ saratna iva vāridhiḥ calatsaudāminīdāma sāṁdrameghasamadyutiḥ
He was adorned with many ornaments, like the ocean with its jewels, his radiance like a dense rain-cloud strung with flashing lightning.
Verse 15 (padma.6.185.15)
तस्यास्ते मुकुटे साक्षात्शार्ङ्गपाणिः परः पुमान् । तं दृष्ट्वा मुच्यते जंतुर्जन्मसंसारबंधनात्
tasyāste mukuṭe sākṣātśārṅgapāṇiḥ paraḥ pumān taṁ dṛṣṭvā mucyate jaṁturjanmasaṁsārabaṁdhanāt
There, atop its crest, that Supreme Person, the very bearer of the Sharnga bow, ever dwelt manifest — seeing him, a creature is freed from the bondage of birth and worldly existence.
Verse 16 (padma.6.185.16)
यस्मिन्पुरे महातीर्थं विद्यते मेखलाभिधम् । यत्र स्नात्वा नरैर्नित्यं प्राप्यते वैष्णवं पदम्
yasminpure mahātīrthaṁ vidyate mekhalābhidham yatra snātvā narairnityaṁ prāpyate vaiṣṇavaṁ padam
In that city there is a great tirtha named Mekhala, bathing in which men always attain the abode of Vishnu.
Verse 17 (padma.6.185.17)
तत्र वीक्ष्य जगन्नाथं नरसिंहं कृपार्णवम् । सप्तजन्मार्जिताद्धोरान्मुच्यते दुष्कृतान्नरः
tatra vīkṣya jagannāthaṁ narasiṁhaṁ kṛpārṇavam saptajanmārjitāddhorānmucyate duṣkṛtānnaraḥ
Beholding there the Lord of the universe, Narasimha, that ocean of compassion, a man is freed from the terrible sins accumulated over seven births.
Verse 18 (padma.6.185.18)
मेखलायां गणाधीशं विलोकयति यो नरः। स निस्तरति विघ्नानि दुस्तराण्यपि सर्वदा । ब्रह्मचर्यपरो दांतो निर्ममो निरहंकृतिः
mekhalāyāṁ gaṇādhīśaṁ vilokayati yo naraḥ sa nistarati vighnāni dustarāṇyapi sarvadā brahmacaryaparo dāṁto nirmamo nirahaṁkṛtiḥ
Whoever beholds Ganadhisha at Mekhala always crosses over even the most insurmountable obstacles, and becomes devoted to celibacy, self-controlled, free of attachment and of egoism.
Verse 19 (padma.6.185.19)
तस्मिन्मेघंकरे कश्चिदभूद्ब्राह्मणसत्तमः । सुनंद इति विख्यातो वेदशास्त्रविशारदः
tasminmeghaṁkare kaścidabhūdbrāhmaṇasattamaḥ sunaṁda iti vikhyāto vedaśāstraviśāradaḥ
In that Meghankara there lived a most excellent brahmin, renowned as Sunanda, learned in the Vedas and scriptures.
Verse 20 (padma.6.185.20)
वशीकृतेंन्द्रियग्रामो वासुदेवपरायणः । देवस्य शार्ङ्गिणः पार्श्वे गीताध्यायमिमं प्रिये
vaśīkṛteṁndriyagrāmo vāsudevaparāyaṇaḥ devasya śārṅgiṇaḥ pārśve gītādhyāyamimaṁ priye
With his senses fully subdued and devoted wholly to Vasudeva — O beloved — he would recite this chapter of the Gita beside the bow-bearing Lord.
Verse 21 (padma.6.185.21)
एकादशं पठत्येष विश्वरूपप्रदर्शनम् । अध्यायस्य प्रभावेन ब्रह्मज्ञानमवाप सः
ekādaśaṁ paṭhatyeṣa viśvarūpapradarśanam adhyāyasya prabhāvena brahmajñānamavāpa saḥ
He recited the eleventh chapter, the revelation of the Universal Form; by the power of that chapter he attained the knowledge of Brahman.
Verse 22 (padma.6.185.22)
परमानंदसंदोह श्लाघ्यसंवित्समाधिना । प्रत्यङ्मुखेंद्रियतयानिश्चलां स्थितिमीयुषा
paramānaṁdasaṁdoha ślāghyasaṁvitsamādhinā pratyaṅmukheṁdriyatayāniścalāṁ sthitimīyuṣā
Through a praiseworthy meditative absorption overflowing with supreme bliss, his senses turned inward, he attained an unwavering state.
Verse 23 (padma.6.185.23)
सततं स्थीयते तेन जीवन्मुक्तेन योगिना । एकदा स महायोगी सिंहराशिस्थिते गुरौ
satataṁ sthīyate tena jīvanmuktena yoginā ekadā sa mahāyogī siṁharāśisthite gurau
By that constant practice he abided as a liberated-while-living yogi. One day, when Jupiter stood in the sign of Leo, that great yogi—
Verse 24 (padma.6.185.24)
गोदावरीतीर्थयात्रां विधातुमुपचक्रमे । प्रथमेऽह्नि समागत्य विरजं तीर्थमुत्तमम्
godāvarītīrthayātrāṁ vidhātumupacakrame prathame'hni samāgatya virajaṁ tīrthamuttamam
—set out to make a pilgrimage to the sacred fords of the Godavari. On the first day, arriving at the excellent tirtha of Viraja—
Verse 25 (padma.6.185.25)
नाभिमारभ्य तीर्थेषु स समभ्यर्च्य देवताम् । मज्जन्मज्जन्जगद्धात्रीं कमलां स व्यलोकयत्
nābhimārabhya tīrtheṣu sa samabhyarcya devatām majjanmajjanjagaddhātrīṁ kamalāṁ sa vyalokayat
—beginning from the Nabhi tirtha, worshipping the deity at each ford and bathing again and again, he beheld Kamala, the sustainer of the world.
Verse 26 (padma.6.185.26)
तां संपूज्य महामायां सर्वकामफलप्रदाम् । तारातीर्थे ततः स्नात्वा कपिलासंगमे ततः
tāṁ saṁpūjya mahāmāyāṁ sarvakāmaphalapradām tārātīrthe tataḥ snātvā kapilāsaṁgame tataḥ
Having worshipped her, that great Maya who grants the fruit of every desire, he then bathed at Tara-tirtha, and next at the confluence of the Kapila.
Verse 27 (padma.6.185.27)
अष्टतीर्थमसौ चक्रे विधाय पितृतर्पणम् । कुमारीशं शिवं नत्वा कपिलाद्वारमाययौ
aṣṭatīrthamasau cakre vidhāya pitṛtarpaṇam kumārīśaṁ śivaṁ natvā kapilādvāramāyayau
He performed the rite of the eight tirthas together with ancestral offerings; bowing to Shiva, lord of Kumari, he arrived at Kapiladvara.
Verse 28 (padma.6.185.28)
तत्र निर्मज्ज्य निर्धूतप्राग्जन्मांतरदुष्कृतः । संपूज्य नत्वा श्रुत्वा च देवं वै मधुसूदनम्
tatra nirmajjya nirdhūtaprāgjanmāṁtaraduṣkṛtaḥ saṁpūjya natvā śrutvā ca devaṁ vai madhusūdanam
Bathing there, the sins of his past births were washed away; he worshipped, bowed to, and heard the glories of the Lord Madhusudana.
Verse 29 (padma.6.185.29)
उषित्वा तत्र तां रात्रिं प्रागात्प्रातः सह द्विजैः । नरसिंहवने तत्र तीर्थे रामस्य दीर्घिका । प्रह्लादपूजितः साक्षादास्ते यत्र नृकेसरी
uṣitvā tatra tāṁ rātriṁ prāgātprātaḥ saha dvijaiḥ narasiṁhavane tatra tīrthe rāmasya dīrghikā prahlādapūjitaḥ sākṣādāste yatra nṛkesarī
Having spent the night there, he set out at dawn with the brahmins. There, in the Narasimha forest, at that tirtha, is Rama‘s pool, where the man-lion, worshipped by Prahlada, dwells manifest.
Verse 30 (padma.6.185.30)
तं दृष्ट्वा देवदेवेशं पूजयित्वा तु भक्तितः । तत्र तं दिवसं नीत्वा स ययावंबिकापुरम्
taṁ dṛṣṭvā devadeveśaṁ pūjayitvā tu bhaktitaḥ tatra taṁ divasaṁ nītvā sa yayāvaṁbikāpuram
Beholding him, the Lord of gods, and worshipping him with devotion, he spent that day there, and then went on to Ambikapura.
Verse 31 (padma.6.185.31)
अनुग्रहेण भक्तानामंबिका तत्र तिष्ठति । पूरयंति मनुष्याणां वांच्छितान्यखिलान्यपि
anugraheṇa bhaktānāmaṁbikā tatra tiṣṭhati pūrayaṁti manuṣyāṇāṁ vāṁcchitānyakhilānyapi
By her grace toward devotees, Ambika dwells there, fulfilling every desired wish of human beings.
Verse 32 (padma.6.185.32)
पूजयित्वांबिकां भक्त्या पुष्पगंधानुलेपनैः । उपहारैश्च विविधैः स्तौत्रैः प्रणमनैरपि
pūjayitvāṁbikāṁ bhaktyā puṣpagaṁdhānulepanaiḥ upahāraiśca vividhaiḥ stautraiḥ praṇamanairapi
Worshipping Ambika with devotion — with flowers, fragrances, unguents, various offerings, hymns of praise, and prostrations—
Verse 33 (padma.6.185.33)
विप्रस्तस्मात्पुरा प्राप्तः कंठस्थानाभिधं पुरम् । यत्रास्ते परमा शक्तिर्महालक्ष्मीर्महाद्युतिः
viprastasmātpurā prāptaḥ kaṁṭhasthānābhidhaṁ puram yatrāste paramā śaktirmahālakṣmīrmahādyutiḥ
—the brahmin then went on from that city and reached the city called Kanthasthana, where the supreme Shakti, Mahalakshmi of great radiance, dwells.
Verse 34 (padma.6.185.34)
तामवेक्ष्य सुधाभानुभास्करद्युतिमंडलाम् । संसारतापविच्छेद पद्मपीयूषवाहिनीम्
tāmavekṣya sudhābhānubhāskaradyutimaṁḍalām saṁsāratāpaviccheda padmapīyūṣavāhinīm
Beholding her, whose radiant orb is like moon and sun combined, who bears the nectar-lotus that cuts away the fever of worldly existence—
Verse 35 (padma.6.185.35)
योगिराजहृदंभोज राजहंसनिषेविताम् । अनाहतमहानादमयीमद्वयरूपिणीम्
yogirājahṛdaṁbhoja rājahaṁsaniṣevitām anāhatamahānādamayīmadvayarūpiṇīm
—who dwells like a royal swan in the lotus-heart of the king of yogis, who is of the nature of the unstruck great sound, whose form is non-dual—
Verse 36 (padma.6.185.36)
महालक्ष्मीं भगवतीं वांछितार्थप्रदायिनीम् । आराध्य भक्तिभावेन चेतसा स मुनीश्वरः
mahālakṣmīṁ bhagavatīṁ vāṁchitārthapradāyinīm ārādhya bhaktibhāvena cetasā sa munīśvaraḥ
—that lord of sages worshipped Bhagavati Mahalakshmi, the bestower of desired ends, with a heart full of devotion.
Verse 37 (padma.6.185.37)
विवाहमंडपं प्राप पुरं विप्रैः समन्वितः । पुरे तत्र प्रतिगृहं वासस्थानमयाचत
vivāhamaṁḍapaṁ prāpa puraṁ vipraiḥ samanvitaḥ pure tatra pratigṛhaṁ vāsasthānamayācata
With brahmins accompanying him, he reached a city where a marriage-pavilion stood; there in that city he sought lodging from house to house.
Verse 38 (padma.6.185.38)
न लेभे वसतिं स्थातुं गेहे कस्मिन्नपि द्विजः । दर्शितं ग्रामपालेन विशालं वासमंदिरम्
na lebhe vasatiṁ sthātuṁ gehe kasminnapi dvijaḥ darśitaṁ grāmapālena viśālaṁ vāsamaṁdiram
The brahmin found no lodging in any house; the village-headman then showed him a spacious dwelling-house.
Verse 39 (padma.6.185.39)
प्रविश्य वसतिं चक्रे ब्राह्मणः संगिभिः सह । ततः प्रभाते विमले सुनंदोऽसौ द्विजोत्तमः
praviśya vasatiṁ cakre brāhmaṇaḥ saṁgibhiḥ saha tataḥ prabhāte vimale sunaṁdo'sau dvijottamaḥ
The brahmin, together with his companions, entered and took up residence there. Then, at clear dawn, that excellent brahmin Sunanda—
Verse 40 (padma.6.185.40)
बहिरालोकयांचक्रे वासगेहान्निजं वपुः । अध्वन्यानखिलान्यत्र जातान्क्वापि यदृच्छया
bahirālokayāṁcakre vāsagehānnijaṁ vapuḥ adhvanyānakhilānyatra jātānkvāpi yadṛcchayā
—looking out from the lodging-house, found himself alone — for all the other travelers who had come there had, by some chance, vanished.
Verse 41 (padma.6.185.41)
गम्यमानः समायांतं ग्रामपालो ददर्श सः । तं बभाषे ग्रामपाल आयुष्मानसि सर्वशः
gamyamānaḥ samāyāṁtaṁ grāmapālo dadarśa saḥ taṁ babhāṣe grāmapāla āyuṣmānasi sarvaśaḥ
As he was walking along, the village-headman, approaching, caught sight of him. The headman said to him: ‘You are altogether long-lived—‘
Verse 42 (padma.6.185.42)
भागधेयवतां पुंसां पुण्यः पुण्यवतामसि । प्रभावो विद्यते वत्स कोपि लोकोत्तरस्त्वयि
bhāgadheyavatāṁ puṁsāṁ puṇyaḥ puṇyavatāmasi prabhāvo vidyate vatsa kopi lokottarastvayi
‘—the most meritorious among fortunate men, and foremost among the meritorious; O child, some extraordinary power resides in you.‘
Verse 43 (padma.6.185.43)
क्व प्रयाताः सहायास्ते कथं तत्सदनाद्बहिः । तत्पश्य मुनिशार्दूल कथयामि तवाग्रतः
kva prayātāḥ sahāyāste kathaṁ tatsadanādbahiḥ tatpaśya muniśārdūla kathayāmi tavāgrataḥ
‘Where have your companions gone, and how did you come to be outside that house? Look, O tiger among sages, I shall tell you before you.‘
Verse 44 (padma.6.185.44)
किंतु नान्यं त्वया तुल्यं पश्यामीह तपस्विनम् । किं जानासि महामंत्रं कां विद्यामवलंबसे
kiṁtu nānyaṁ tvayā tulyaṁ paśyāmīha tapasvinam kiṁ jānāsi mahāmaṁtraṁ kāṁ vidyāmavalaṁbase
‘But I see no ascetic here equal to you. What great mantra do you know? On what knowledge do you rely?‘
Verse 45 (padma.6.185.45)
कस्य देवस्य कारुण्याच्छक्तिर्लोकोत्तरा त्वयि । तत्कारुण्यवशात्तिष्ठ ग्रामेऽस्मिन्ब्राह्मणोत्तम
kasya devasya kāruṇyācchaktirlokottarā tvayi tatkāruṇyavaśāttiṣṭha grāme'sminbrāhmaṇottama
‘By whose deity‘s grace does this extraordinary power dwell in you? Through that same grace, O best of brahmins, stay in this village.‘
Verse 46 (padma.6.185.46)
शुश्रूषामखिलामेव भगवंस्ते करोम्यहम् । इति संवासयामास तस्मिन्ग्रामे मुनीश्वरम्
śuśrūṣāmakhilāmeva bhagavaṁste karomyaham iti saṁvāsayāmāsa tasmingrāme munīśvaram
‘I shall render you every service, O venerable one.‘ Thus he settled that lord of sages in the village.
Verse 47 (padma.6.185.47)
परिचर्या च तस्यासौ भक्त्या चक्रे दिवानिशम् । दिवसेषु प्रयातेषु सप्ताष्टसु समेयिवान्
paricaryā ca tasyāsau bhaktyā cakre divāniśam divaseṣu prayāteṣu saptāṣṭasu sameyivān
He served him with devotion day and night. When seven or eight days had passed, the headman came—
Verse 48 (padma.6.185.48)
प्रातरागत्य तस्याग्रे रुरोद भृशदुःखितः । अद्य मे भाग्यहीनस्य गुणवान्भक्तिमान्सुतः
prātarāgatya tasyāgre ruroda bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ adya me bhāgyahīnasya guṇavānbhaktimānsutaḥ
—coming before him in the morning, weeping bitterly with grief: ‘Today, my virtuous and devoted son, I being unfortunate—‘
Verse 49 (padma.6.185.49)
जाज्वल्यमानदंष्ट्रेण भक्षितो निशि रक्षसा । इत्येवं रक्षकेणोक्तं तं पप्रच्छ स संयमी
jājvalyamānadaṁṣṭreṇa bhakṣito niśi rakṣasā ityevaṁ rakṣakeṇoktaṁ taṁ papraccha sa saṁyamī
‘—was devoured in the night by a rakshasa with blazing fangs.‘ When the headman had said this, the self-controlled Sunanda questioned him—
Verse 50 (padma.6.185.50)
क्वास्ते स राक्षसः पुत्रो भक्षितस्ते कथं वद । ग्रामपाल उवाच-। वर्तते नगरे घोरः पुरुषादो निशाचरः
kvāste sa rākṣasaḥ putro bhakṣitaste kathaṁ vada grāmapāla uvāca- vartate nagare ghoraḥ puruṣādo niśācaraḥ
‘Where is that rakshasa? Tell me how your son came to be devoured.‘ The headman said: ‘In this town there lives a terrible man-eating night-stalker—‘
Verse 51 (padma.6.185.51)
स खादति नरानेत्य नित्यं नगरगोचरान् । स सर्वैर्नागरैरत्र प्रार्थितः पुरुषैः पुरा
sa khādati narānetya nityaṁ nagaragocarān sa sarvairnāgarairatra prārthitaḥ puruṣaiḥ purā
‘—he comes daily and devours the men of the town. He was once entreated here by all the townsmen—‘

रक्ष राक्षस नः सर्वान्ग्रासं ते कल्पयामहे । पथिका निशि निद्रंति ये च तान्भुंक्ष्व राक्षस
rakṣa rākṣasa naḥ sarvāngrāsaṁ te kalpayāmahe pathikā niśi nidraṁti ye ca tānbhuṁkṣva rākṣasa
‘—“Spare us all, O rakshasa; we shall arrange your meal for you — devour, O rakshasa, those travelers who sleep here at night.“‘
Verse 53 (padma.6.185.53)
एतस्मिन्सदने पांथान्ग्रामपालप्रवेशितान् । आहारं कल्पयांचक्रुरात्मीयप्राणगुप्तये
etasminsadane pāṁthāngrāmapālapraveśitān āhāraṁ kalpayāṁcakrurātmīyaprāṇaguptaye
‘—thus, to protect their own lives, they arranged as his food the travelers whom the village-headman would lodge in this very house.‘
Verse 54 (padma.6.185.54)
भवान्सुप्तोगृहेऽमुष्मिन्नधन्यैः संयुतः परैः । ते ग्रस्ताः किल चानेन न त्वं मुक्तोसि द्विजोत्तम
bhavānsuptogṛhe'muṣminnadhanyaiḥ saṁyutaḥ paraiḥ te grastāḥ kila cānena na tvaṁ muktosi dvijottama
‘You slept in that house together with other unfortunate ones; they indeed were seized by him — yet you, O best of brahmins, were spared.‘
Verse 55 (padma.6.185.55)
प्रभावं भवतो वेत्ति भवानेव द्विजोत्तम । मदीय तनयस्याद्य मित्रमेकमुपागतम्
prabhāvaṁ bhavato vetti bhavāneva dvijottama madīya tanayasyādya mitramekamupāgatam
‘You alone know your own power, O best of brahmins. Today one friend of my son had come—‘
Verse 56 (padma.6.185.56)
अजानता मया सोऽपि तनयस्य प्रियः सखा । अन्यैः पांथजनैः सार्द्धं तस्मिन्गेहे प्रवेशितः
ajānatā mayā so'pi tanayasya priyaḥ sakhā anyaiḥ pāṁthajanaiḥ sārddhaṁ tasmingehe praveśitaḥ
‘—not knowing the danger, I lodged him too, my son‘s dear friend, together with the other travelers in that same house.‘
Verse 57 (padma.6.185.57)
श्रुत्वा तत्र प्रविष्टं तं निशीथे तनयो मम । तमानेतुं गतः सोऽपि भक्षितस्तेन रक्षसा
śrutvā tatra praviṣṭaṁ taṁ niśīthe tanayo mama tamānetuṁ gataḥ so'pi bhakṣitastena rakṣasā
‘Hearing that he had entered there, my son went at midnight to fetch him — and he too was devoured by that rakshasa.‘
Verse 58 (padma.6.185.58)
दुःखितेन मया प्रोक्तः प्रातः स पिशिताशनः । ममापि पुत्रो दुष्टात्मन्भवता निशि भक्षितः
duḥkhitena mayā proktaḥ prātaḥ sa piśitāśanaḥ mamāpi putro duṣṭātmanbhavatā niśi bhakṣitaḥ
‘Grieving, I said this morning to that flesh-eater: “O evil one, my son too was devoured by you in the night—“‘
Verse 59 (padma.6.185.59)
भवज्जठरनिर्मग्नः सुतोऽसौ येन जीवति । अस्ति चैवमुपायस्ते ब्रूहि मे त्वं निशाचर
bhavajjaṭharanirmagnaḥ suto'sau yena jīvati asti caivamupāyaste brūhi me tvaṁ niśācara
‘—“tell me, O night-stalker, is there some means by which that son, now sunk within your belly, might yet live?“‘
Verse 60 (padma.6.185.60)
राक्षस उवाच-। अंतःप्रविष्टा त्वत्पुत्रमज्ञात्वाहमभक्षयम् । अजानन्भक्षितः पांथैः सहितोऽसौ सुतस्तव
rākṣasa uvāca- aṁtaḥpraviṣṭā tvatputramajñātvāhamabhakṣayam ajānanbhakṣitaḥ pāṁthaiḥ sahito'sau sutastava
The rakshasa said: ‘Not knowing who he was, once he had entered, I devoured your son; unknowingly he was eaten along with the other travelers.‘
Verse 61 (padma.6.185.61)
यथा जीवति मे कुक्षौ यथा भवति रक्षितः । तथा विहितमप्यस्ति दैवेन परमेष्ठिना
yathā jīvati me kukṣau yathā bhavati rakṣitaḥ tathā vihitamapyasti daivena parameṣṭhinā
‘Yet it has been so ordained by the Supreme Lord that he continues to live within my belly, that he remains protected.‘
Verse 62 (padma.6.185.62)
गीतैकादशमध्यायं यः पठत्यनिशं द्विजः । तत्प्रभावेन मे मुक्तिर्मृतानां पुनरुद्भवः
gītaikādaśamadhyāyaṁ yaḥ paṭhatyaniśaṁ dvijaḥ tatprabhāvena me muktirmṛtānāṁ punarudbhavaḥ
‘That brahmin who ceaselessly recites the eleventh chapter of the Gita — by his power alone will come my liberation and the revival of the dead.‘
Verse 63 (padma.6.185.63)
ग्रामपाल उवाच-। कथमेकादशाध्यायसामर्थ्यमिदमद्भुतम्
grāmapāla uvāca- kathamekādaśādhyāyasāmarthyamidamadbhutam
The headman said: ‘How does this eleventh chapter possess such wondrous power?‘

पुरा गृध्रेण केनापि नभोमार्गेण गच्छता । अस्थिखंडं स्वतुंडाग्रात्पातितं क्वापि वारिणि
purā gṛdhreṇa kenāpi nabhomārgeṇa gacchatā asthikhaṁḍaṁ svatuṁḍāgrātpātitaṁ kvāpi vāriṇi
‘Long ago, a certain vulture, flying through the sky, let fall from the tip of its beak a fragment of bone into some water.‘
Verse 66 (padma.6.185.66)
तं जलाशयमागत्यकोऽपि ज्ञानीश्वरस्तदा । महातीर्थमिति ज्ञात्वा विदधे पितृतर्पणम्
taṁ jalāśayamāgatyako'pi jñānīśvarastadā mahātīrthamiti jñātvā vidadhe pitṛtarpaṇam
‘Then a certain wise man, coming to that reservoir and recognizing it as a great tirtha, performed ancestral offerings there.‘

तमूचिरे जनाः सर्वे तीर्थमेतत्कथं वद । जपत्येकादशाध्यायं त्रिसन्ध्यं नियतेंद्रियः
tamūcire janāḥ sarve tīrthametatkathaṁ vada japatyekādaśādhyāyaṁ trisandhyaṁ niyateṁdriyaḥ
‘All the people asked him: “Tell us, how did this become a tirtha?“ A brahmin who recited the eleventh chapter thrice daily with senses controlled—‘
Verse 68 (padma.6.185.68)
कृतमौनस्तु विप्रोऽसौ चौरैर्व्यापादितः पथि । तस्यास्थिशकलं गृध्रवदनात्पतितं जले
kṛtamaunastu vipro'sau caurairvyāpāditaḥ pathi tasyāsthiśakalaṁ gṛdhravadanātpatitaṁ jale
‘—that brahmin, having taken a vow of silence, was killed by robbers on the road; a fragment of his bone fell from the vulture‘s mouth into the water.‘
Verse 69 (padma.6.185.69)
तेन तीर्थमिदं दिव्यं जातं पातकनाशनम् । ततस्ते मानवाः सर्वे सस्नुस्तत्र जलाशये
tena tīrthamidaṁ divyaṁ jātaṁ pātakanāśanam tataste mānavāḥ sarve sasnustatra jalāśaye
‘By that alone, this became a divine, sin-destroying tirtha. Then all those people bathed there in that reservoir.‘
Verse 70 (padma.6.185.70)
निष्कल्मषतया चैवं प्रापुस्ते परमं पदम् । एकादशस्य सामर्थ्यादध्यायस्य भविष्यति
niṣkalmaṣatayā caivaṁ prāpuste paramaṁ padam ekādaśasya sāmarthyādadhyāyasya bhaviṣyati
‘And thus, becoming free of stain, they attained the supreme abode. By the power of the eleventh chapter, this too shall come to pass—‘
Verse 71 (padma.6.185.71)
ममापि मुक्तिः पांथानां पुनरुत्थानमेव च । यो मया कश्चिदुद्गीर्णो ब्राह्मणोऽत्रैव तिष्ठति
mamāpi muktiḥ pāṁthānāṁ punarutthānameva ca yo mayā kaścidudgīrṇo brāhmaṇo'traiva tiṣṭhati
‘—my own liberation, and the revival of the travelers. A certain brahmin, whom I once vomited out, still lives right here.‘
Verse 72 (padma.6.185.72)
स च एकादशाध्यायं जपति स्म निरंतरम् । स तेनाध्यायमंत्रेण सप्तवाराभिमंत्रितम्
sa ca ekādaśādhyāyaṁ japati sma niraṁtaram sa tenādhyāyamaṁtreṇa saptavārābhimaṁtritam
‘And he ceaselessly recites the eleventh chapter. If water consecrated seven times by him with that chapter as mantra—‘
Verse 73 (padma.6.185.73)
विधाय वारि विप्रेंद्रः क्षिपेद्यदि ममोपरि । ततो मे शापनिर्मुक्तिर्भविष्यति न संशयः । इति तेनास्मि संदिष्टः समायातस्त्वदंतिकम्
vidhāya vāri vipreṁdraḥ kṣipedyadi mamopari tato me śāpanirmuktirbhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ iti tenāsmi saṁdiṣṭaḥ samāyātastvadaṁtikam
‘—that foremost of brahmins prepares and sprinkles upon me, then, without doubt, I shall be freed from my curse.‘ Thus instructed by him, I have come to you.
Verse 74 (padma.6.185.74)
विप्र उवाच-। राक्षसः केन पापेन जातोसौ वद रक्षक । यत्क्षपायां गृहे तस्मिन्नरान्खादति निद्रितान्
vipra uvāca- rākṣasaḥ kena pāpena jātosau vada rakṣaka yatkṣapāyāṁ gṛhe tasminnarānkhādati nidritān
The brahmin Sunanda said: ‘Tell me, O headman, by what sin did he become a rakshasa, that at night in that house he devours sleeping men?‘
Verse 75 (padma.6.185.75)
ग्रामपाल उवाच। अस्मिन्ग्रामे पुरा कश्चिदासीद्विप्रः कृषीवलः । एकदा शालिकेदाररक्षणे व्याकुलो द्विजः
grāmapāla uvāca asmingrāme purā kaścidāsīdvipraḥ kṛṣīvalaḥ ekadā śālikedārarakṣaṇe vyākulo dvijaḥ
The headman said: ‘In this village long ago there lived a certain brahmin farmer. One day, that brahmin, absorbed in guarding his rice-field—‘
Verse 76 (padma.6.185.76)
नातिदूरे महागृध्रः पांथमेकमभक्षयत् । तं विमोचयितुं दूराद्दयांचक्रेऽपि तापसः
nātidūre mahāgṛdhraḥ pāṁthamekamabhakṣayat taṁ vimocayituṁ dūrāddayāṁcakre'pi tāpasaḥ
‘—not far away, a great vulture was devouring a traveler. An ascetic, though wishing from a distance, out of compassion, to save him—‘
Verse 77 (padma.6.185.77)
भुक्त्वा पांथं खगस्तावन्निरगादंबराध्वना । ततः स तापसः कोपात्तं बभाषे कृषीवलम्
bhuktvā pāṁthaṁ khagastāvanniragādaṁbarādhvanā tataḥ sa tāpasaḥ kopāttaṁ babhāṣe kṛṣīvalam
‘—but the bird, having devoured the traveler, flew off by the path of the sky. Then, in anger, that ascetic spoke to the farmer—‘

धिक्त्वां हालिक दुर्बुद्धे कठोरमतिनिर्घृण । कुक्षिभरं परत्राण विमुखं हतजीवितम्
dhiktvāṁ hālika durbuddhe kaṭhoramatinirghṛṇa kukṣibharaṁ paratrāṇa vimukhaṁ hatajīvitam
‘—“Shame on you, O plowman, foolish, hard-hearted and merciless — filling your own belly while turning away from saving another, your life is wasted—“‘
Verse 79 (padma.6.185.79)
चोरैश्च दंष्ट्रिभिः सर्प्पैररिवह्निविषांबुभिः । गृध्रराक्षसभूतैश्च वेतालादिभिराहतान्
coraiśca daṁṣṭribhiḥ sarppairarivahniviṣāṁbubhiḥ gṛdhrarākṣasabhūtaiśca vetālādibhirāhatān
‘—“those struck down by thieves, by fanged beasts, by serpents, by enemies, fire, poison, or water, or by vultures, rakshasas, spirits and vetalas—“‘
Verse 80 (padma.6.185.80)
जनानुपेक्षते शक्तः स तद्वधफलं लभेत् । न मोचयति यो विप्रं प्रभुश्चोरादिभिर्धृतम्
janānupekṣate śaktaḥ sa tadvadhaphalaṁ labhet na mocayati yo vipraṁ prabhuścorādibhirdhṛtam
‘—“whoever, though capable, neglects such people, incurs the fruit of their killing; whoever, having the power, does not free a brahmin seized by thieves and the like—“‘
Verse 81 (padma.6.185.81)
स याति नरकं घोरं स पुनर्जायते वृकः । निहन्यमानं विपिने गृध्रव्याघ्रेण पीडितम्
sa yāti narakaṁ ghoraṁ sa punarjāyate vṛkaḥ nihanyamānaṁ vipine gṛdhravyāghreṇa pīḍitam
‘—“he goes to a terrible hell, and is reborn as a wolf. One who, seeing a creature in the forest being killed, tormented by vulture or tiger—“‘
Verse 82 (padma.6.185.82)
मुंचमुचेति यो वक्ति स याति परमां गतिम् । गवामर्थे हता व्याघ्रैर्व्याधैर्दुष्टैश्च राजभिः
muṁcamuceti yo vakti sa yāti paramāṁ gatim gavāmarthe hatā vyāghrairvyādhairduṣṭaiśca rājabhiḥ
‘—“cries out release him, release him! attains the supreme goal. Those slain by tigers, hunters, or wicked kings for the sake of cows—“‘
Verse 83 (padma.6.185.83)
तेपि यांति पदं विष्णोर्दुष्प्राप्यं योगिनामपि । अश्वमेधसहस्राणि वाजपेयशतानि च
tepi yāṁti padaṁ viṣṇorduṣprāpyaṁ yogināmapi aśvamedhasahasrāṇi vājapeyaśatāni ca
‘—“even they attain the abode of Vishnu, hard even for yogis to attain. Thousands of Ashvamedha and hundreds of Vajapeya sacrifices—“‘
Verse 84 (padma.6.185.84)
शरणागतसंत्राण कलां नार्हंति षोडशीम् । दीनस्योपेक्षणं कृत्वा भीतस्य च शरीरिणः
śaraṇāgatasaṁtrāṇa kalāṁ nārhaṁti ṣoḍaśīm dīnasyopekṣaṇaṁ kṛtvā bhītasya ca śarīriṇaḥ
‘—“do not equal even a sixteenth part of the merit of protecting one who has taken refuge. Having neglected a wretched and frightened creature—“‘
Verse 85 (padma.6.185.85)
पुण्यवानपि कालेन कुंभीपाके स पच्यते । पश्यन्नपि भवान् पांथं दुष्टगृध्रेण भक्षितम्
puṇyavānapi kālena kuṁbhīpāke sa pacyate paśyannapi bhavān pāṁthaṁ duṣṭagṛdhreṇa bhakṣitam
‘—“even a meritorious man is in time cooked in the hell of Kumbhipaka. Though you saw the traveler being devoured by the wicked vulture—“‘
Verse 86 (padma.6.185.86)
निवारणसमर्थोपि न चक्रे यन्निवारणम् । निष्कृपोसि यतस्तस्माद्भविष्यसि निशाचरः
nivāraṇasamarthopi na cakre yannivāraṇam niṣkṛposi yatastasmādbhaviṣyasi niśācaraḥ
‘—“and though capable of preventing it, did not prevent it — since you are merciless, therefore you shall become a night-stalker.“‘
Verse 87 (padma.6.185.87)
इमां शापं मुने श्रुत्वा कंपमानकलेवरः । प्रणम्य हालिको विप्रं बभाषे करुणं वचः
imāṁ śāpaṁ mune śrutvā kaṁpamānakalevaraḥ praṇamya hāliko vipraṁ babhāṣe karuṇaṁ vacaḥ
‘Hearing this curse, O sage, the plowman, his body trembling, bowed to the brahmin and spoke pitiful words.‘
Verse 88 (padma.6.185.88)
अत्राहं क्षेत्ररक्षायां चिरं क्षिप्तेन चक्षुषा । न वेद्मि निकटं गृध्र हन्यमानमिमं नरम्
atrāhaṁ kṣetrarakṣāyāṁ ciraṁ kṣiptena cakṣuṣā na vedmi nikaṭaṁ gṛdhra hanyamānamimaṁ naram
‘“Here, engrossed for long in guarding my field, my gaze fixed elsewhere, I did not know, O sage, that this man was being killed nearby by a vulture.“‘
Verse 89 (padma.6.185.89)
तेन मेऽनुग्रहं कर्तुं कृपणस्य त्वमर्हसि । विप्र उवाच। यो वेत्त्येकादशाध्यायं जपत्यनुदिनं च यः
tena me'nugrahaṁ kartuṁ kṛpaṇasya tvamarhasi vipra uvāca yo vettyekādaśādhyāyaṁ japatyanudinaṁ ca yaḥ
‘“Therefore you should show grace to me, a wretched one.“‘ The brahmin said: ‘Whoever knows the eleventh chapter and recites it daily—‘
Verse 90 (padma.6.185.90)
तेनाभिमंत्रितं वारि यदा शिरसि तावके । पतिष्यति तदा शापात्तव मुक्तिर्भविष्यति
tenābhimaṁtritaṁ vāri yadā śirasi tāvake patiṣyati tadā śāpāttava muktirbhaviṣyati
‘—when water consecrated by him falls upon your head, then you shall be freed from this curse.‘
Verse 91 (padma.6.185.91)
इत्युक्त्वा तापसो यातो हालिको राक्षसोऽभवत् । तदागच्छ द्विजश्रेष्ठ तेनाध्यायेन मंत्रय । तीर्थोदकं स्वहस्तेन तस्य मूर्द्धनि निक्षिप
ityuktvā tāpaso yāto hāliko rākṣaso'bhavat tadāgaccha dvijaśreṣṭha tenādhyāyena maṁtraya tīrthodakaṁ svahastena tasya mūrddhani nikṣipa
‘Having said this, the ascetic departed, and the plowman became a rakshasa. So come, O best of brahmins — consecrate tirtha-water with that chapter and, with your own hand, sprinkle it upon his head.‘
Verse 92 (padma.6.185.92)
महादेव उवाच। इति तत्प्रार्थितं तस्य श्रुत्वा च करुणाप्लुतः । तथेति सहपालेन मुनी रक्षोंतिकं ययौ
mahādeva uvāca iti tatprārthitaṁ tasya śrutvā ca karuṇāplutaḥ tatheti sahapālena munī rakṣoṁtikaṁ yayau
Mahadeva said: Hearing this entreaty of his, and overflowing with compassion, the sage said ‘so be it‘ and went, together with the headman, to the presence of the rakshasa.
Verse 93 (padma.6.185.93)
एकादशेन तेनांबु विश्वरूपेण मंत्रितम् । निक्षिप्तं तस्य शिरसि तेन विप्रेण योगिना
ekādaśena tenāṁbu viśvarūpeṇa maṁtritam nikṣiptaṁ tasya śirasi tena vipreṇa yoginā
Water consecrated with that eleventh chapter, the Vishvarupa, was sprinkled by that yogi-brahmin upon his head.
Verse 94 (padma.6.185.94)
गीताध्यायप्रभावेण शापमोक्षमवाप सः । विहाय राक्षसं देहं चतुर्बाहुस्ततोऽभवत्
gītādhyāyaprabhāveṇa śāpamokṣamavāpa saḥ vihāya rākṣasaṁ dehaṁ caturbāhustato'bhavat
By the power of that Gita chapter he attained release from the curse; abandoning his rakshasa body, he then became four-armed.
Verse 95 (padma.6.185.95)
निगीर्णा ये जनास्तेन पांथा आसन्सहस्रशः । चतुर्भुजा बभूवुस्ते शंखचक्रगदाधराः
nigīrṇā ye janāstena pāṁthā āsansahasraśaḥ caturbhujā babhūvuste śaṁkhacakragadādharāḥ
The thousands of travelers who had been swallowed by him also became four-armed, bearing conch, discus, and mace.
Verse 96 (padma.6.185.96)
ते विमानान्यारुरुहुस्तावदूचे स राक्षसम् । मदीयस्तनयः कस्तं दर्शयस्व निशाचर
te vimānānyāruruhustāvadūce sa rākṣasam madīyastanayaḥ kastaṁ darśayasva niśācara
They mounted celestial chariots; then the headman said to the former rakshasa: ‘Which one is my son? Show him to me, O night-stalker.‘
Verse 97 (padma.6.185.97)
इत्युक्ते ग्रामपालेन दिव्यधीराह राक्षसः । एवं चतुर्भुजं विद्धि तमालश्यामलद्युतिम्
ityukte grāmapālena divyadhīrāha rākṣasaḥ evaṁ caturbhujaṁ viddhi tamālaśyāmaladyutim
When the headman said this, the former rakshasa, now of divine understanding, said: ‘Know him thus, that four-armed one, of the dark hue of the tamala tree—‘

माणिक्यमुकुटं दिव्यमणिकुंडलमंडितम् । हारहारिमहास्कंधं स्वर्णकेयूरभूषितम्
māṇikyamukuṭaṁ divyamaṇikuṁḍalamaṁḍitam hārahārimahāskaṁdhaṁ svarṇakeyūrabhūṣitam
‘—wearing a ruby crown, adorned with divine jeweled earrings, his great shoulders graced with a necklace, ornamented with golden armlets—‘
Verse 99 (padma.6.185.99)
राजीवलोचनं स्निग्धं हस्ते कृतसरोरुहम् । दिव्यं विमानमारूढं देवत्वं प्राप्तमात्मजम्
rājīvalocanaṁ snigdhaṁ haste kṛtasaroruham divyaṁ vimānamārūḍhaṁ devatvaṁ prāptamātmajam
‘—lotus-eyed, gentle, a lotus held in hand, mounted on a divine chariot — this is your son, who has attained divinity.‘

इति तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा सुतं दृष्ट्वा च तादृशम् । स्वगेहं नेतुमारेभे जहास स सुतस्ततः
iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā sutaṁ dṛṣṭvā ca tādṛśam svagehaṁ netumārebhe jahāsa sa sutastataḥ
Hearing his words and seeing his son thus transformed, he began to lead him toward his own house; but the son then laughed.
Verse 101 (padma.6.185.101)
कति वाराणि जातोऽसि त्वं पुत्रो मम रक्षक । पूर्वपुत्रस्त्वदीयोऽस्मि अधुना विबुधोऽस्म्यहम्
kati vārāṇi jāto'si tvaṁ putro mama rakṣaka pūrvaputrastvadīyo'smi adhunā vibudho'smyaham
‘How many times, O protector, have you called me your son? I was your son before; now I am a god.‘
Verse 102 (padma.6.185.102)
यास्यामि वैष्णवं धाम ब्राह्मणस्य प्रसादतः । निशाचरोऽपि प्राप्तोऽयं पश्य देहं चतुर्भजम्
yāsyāmi vaiṣṇavaṁ dhāma brāhmaṇasya prasādataḥ niśācaro'pi prāpto'yaṁ paśya dehaṁ caturbhajam
‘By the grace of the brahmin, I shall go to the abode of Vishnu. See, even the night-stalker has attained this four-armed body.‘

एकादशस्य माहात्म्याद्याति स्वर्गं समं जनैः । विप्रादस्मात्तमध्यायमधीष्व त्वं जपानिशम्
ekādaśasya māhātmyādyāti svargaṁ samaṁ janaiḥ viprādasmāttamadhyāyamadhīṣva tvaṁ japāniśam
‘By the glory of the eleventh chapter he goes to heaven together with the other freed people. Learn that chapter from this brahmin, and recite it day and night.‘
Verse 104 (padma.6.185.104)
भविष्यति न संदेहस्तवापि गतिरीदृशी । तात तस्मात्सतां संगं दुर्लभं सर्वथा जनैः
bhaviṣyati na saṁdehastavāpi gatirīdṛśī tāta tasmātsatāṁ saṁgaṁ durlabhaṁ sarvathā janaiḥ
‘Without doubt, such a destiny shall be yours too, O father. Therefore the company of the virtuous is ever hard for people to obtain.‘
Verse 105 (padma.6.185.105)
सोप्यद्य ते समुत्पन्नो ह्यात्मनः साधयेप्सितम् । किं धनैर्भोगदानैर्वा किं यज्ञैस्तपसा नु किम्
sopyadya te samutpanno hyātmanaḥ sādhayepsitam kiṁ dhanairbhogadānairvā kiṁ yajñaistapasā nu kim
‘That same opportunity has arisen for you today — accomplish your own desired end. What use are riches, or the giving of enjoyments, or sacrifices, or austerity—‘
Verse 106 (padma.6.185.106)
किं पूर्तैर्वापरं श्रेयो विश्वरूपस्य पाठतः । तद्विष्णोः परमं रूपमध्यायस्य श्रुतेन च
kiṁ pūrtairvāparaṁ śreyo viśvarūpasya pāṭhataḥ tadviṣṇoḥ paramaṁ rūpamadhyāyasya śrutena ca
‘—or what other good is there in pious public works, compared with reciting the Universal Form? Through hearing that chapter, that supreme form of Vishnu—‘
Verse 107 (padma.6.185.107)
यत्पूर्णानंदसंदोह कृष्णब्रह्मास्यनिर्गतम् । कुरुक्षेत्रेऽर्जुने मित्रे तत्कैवल्यरसायनम्
yatpūrṇānaṁdasaṁdoha kṛṣṇabrahmāsyanirgatam kurukṣetre'rjune mitre tatkaivalyarasāyanam
‘—which, overflowing with complete bliss, issued from the mouth of Krishna-Brahman at Kurukshetra to his friend Arjuna, is the very elixir of liberation—‘
Verse 108 (padma.6.185.108)
नृणां च भवभीतानामाधिव्याधिभयापहम् । अनेकजन्मदुःखघ्नं नान्यत्पश्यामि तत्स्मर । शिव उवाच। इत्युक्त्वा सह तैः सर्वैर्ययौ विष्णोः परं पदम्
nṛṇāṁ ca bhavabhītānāmādhivyādhibhayāpaham anekajanmaduḥkhaghnaṁ nānyatpaśyāmi tatsmara śiva uvāca ityuktvā saha taiḥ sarvairyayau viṣṇoḥ paraṁ padam
‘—it removes, for men afraid of worldly existence, the fear of mental and bodily affliction, and destroys the suffering of many births — I see nothing else its equal; remember it.‘ Shiva said: Having spoken thus, he went, together with all of them, to the supreme abode of Vishnu.
Verse 109 (padma.6.185.109)
तमध्यायं ततो विप्राद्ग्रामपालः पपाठ सः । तावुभौ तस्य माहात्म्याज्जग्मतुर्वैष्णवं पदम्
tamadhyāyaṁ tato viprādgrāmapālaḥ papāṭha saḥ tāvubhau tasya māhātmyājjagmaturvaiṣṇavaṁ padam
Then the village-headman learned that chapter from the brahmin; by its glory, both of them went to the abode of Vishnu.
Verse 110 (padma.6.185.110)
इत्येकादशमाहात्म्य कथा तुभ्यं निरूपिता । यस्याः श्रवणमात्रेण महापातकसंक्षयः
ityekādaśamāhātmya kathā tubhyaṁ nirūpitā yasyāḥ śravaṇamātreṇa mahāpātakasaṁkṣayaḥ
Thus has this story of the glory of the eleventh chapter been related to you; by merely hearing it, great sins are destroyed.
