devyuvāca dvādaśādhyāyamāhātmyaṁ bhavatā kathitaṁ mama brūhi trayodaśādhyāyamāhātmyamatisuṁdaram

The Goddess said: You have told me the glory of the twelfth chapter. Now tell the most beautiful glory of the thirteenth chapter.

Verse 2 (padma.6.187.2)

īśvara uvāca- śṛṇu trayodaśādhyāyamahimāṁbhonidhiṁ śive yadākarṇanamātreṇa parāṁ mudamavāpsyasi

Ishvara said: Listen, O Shiva, to the ocean of the greatness of the thirteenth chapter — merely by hearing it you shall attain supreme joy.

Verse 3 (padma.6.187.3)

asti dakṣiṇadiṅmārge tuṁgabhadrā mahānadī tattaṭe nagaraṁ ramyaṁ nāmnā hariharaṁ puram

In the southern direction there is the great river Tungabhadra; on its bank stands a charming city named Hariharapura.

Verse 4 (padma.6.187.4)

yatrā'ste bhagavāndevi devo hariharaḥ svayam yasya darśanamātreṇa paraṁ kalyāṇamāpyate

There, O Goddess, the Lord Harihara himself dwells manifest; merely by beholding him one attains supreme welfare.

Verse 5 (padma.6.187.5)

tasminpure dvijanmāsīddharidīkṣitasaṁjñikaḥ tapaḥ svādhyāyanirato śrotriyo vedapāragaḥ

In that city there lived a brahmin named Haridikshita, devoted to austerity and Vedic study, learned in the scriptures and versed in the Vedas.

Verse 6 (padma.6.187.6)

durācāreti tasyāsīdbhāryā nāmnā ca karmaṇā na suṣvāpa samaṁ patyā durālāpā kadācana

His wife was named Duracara — 'ill-conduct' — both in name and in deed; harsh of speech, she never once slept beside her husband.

Verse 7 (padma.6.187.7)

kṣaṇamapyātmasadane na cāste svairacāriṇī kaṁṭhadaghnaṁ dvijadvāre dhayaṁtī vāruṇīrasam

Wayward, she would not stay in her own home even for a moment; drinking wine up to her throat at the brahmins' doors—

Verse 8 (padma.6.187.8)

patisaṁbadhinaḥ sarvāntarjayaṁtī punaḥ punaḥ viṭaiḥ saha sadonmattā ramamāṇā niraṁtaram

—she would repeatedly berate all her husband's relatives, always intoxicated, ceaselessly consorting with libertines.

Verse 9 (padma.6.187.9)

Once, seeing the city thrown into an uproar by the townsfolk over her conduct, she herself set up a secret rendezvous-house in a lonely forest.

Verse 10 (padma.6.187.10)

With mango trees bursting into blossom from root to leaf, and the fifth-note calls of cuckoos, the god of love seemed to live again.
