śrībhagavānuvāca- naitaccitraṁ surādhīśa munayo jñānavattarāḥ madīyāṁ padavīṁ bhaktiṁ gurvīṁ kurvaṁti satkṛtām

The Blessed Lord said: This is no wonder, O lord of gods; sages, most abounding in knowledge, make devotion to my path weighty and duly honored.

Verse 2 (padma.6.200.2)

ete jñānopadeṣṭārastrilokatalavāsinām pravartayaṁtyamī naṣṭaṁ vedamārgaṁ yataḥ sadā

These are the teachers of knowledge for the dwellers of the three worlds; they ever set going again the lost path of the Vedas.

Verse 3 (padma.6.200.3)

bhaktyā bhavānapi svargabhogāsakto'pi māṁ yataḥ prapanno'si kimāścaryaṁ yatastava gururguruḥ

Since even you, though attached to the enjoyments of heaven, have taken refuge in me through devotion, what wonder is there — for your guru is himself so great a guru.

Verse 4 (padma.6.200.4)

yajasva suraśārdūla makhairmāṁ bahudakṣiṇaiḥ niṣkrāmastvaṁ samīpasthaṁ tūrṇaṁ prāpsyasi matpadam

Worship me, O tiger among gods, with sacrifices bearing abundant sacrificial fees; when you depart this life, you shall swiftly attain my abode, close at hand.

Verse 5 (padma.6.200.5)

pratiyāgaṁ prayaccha tvaṁ ratnaprasthānyanekaśaḥ ākhyayāsthānametatte iṁdraprasthaṁ bhaviṣyati

At each sacrifice, give away many measures of jewels; by this name, this place of yours shall become known as Indraprastha.

bho bho brahmasutā yūyaṁ jñānavijñānakovidāḥ nijayogabalenātra kurudhvaṁ tīrthasaptakam

O sons of Brahma, you who are learned in knowledge and its application, by the power of your own yoga, establish here the seven Naimisha tirthas.

Verse 9 (padma.6.200.9)

nigamodbodhakaṁ tīrthaṁ tvaṁ guro pratipādaya vinādhyayanamapyatra snānādbodhostu chaṁdasām

O guru, you establish here the tirtha named Nigamodbodhaka, so that even without study, by bathing here, there may come knowledge of the Vedic hymns—

Verse 10 (padma.6.200.10)

smṛtiśca jāyatāṁ pūrvajanmanastu parātmanoḥ ahamāropayāmyatra dvārakāṁ sumanoharām

—and let there arise the memory of one's former birth, for supreme souls. I myself shall establish here a most enchanting Dvaraka—

Verse 11 (padma.6.200.11)

samudreṇasamaṁ yatra gomatyāsaṁgamo'bhavat kośalāṁ ca karomyatra madhvaraṇyaṁ ca vāsava

yayoravatariṣyāmi vapurbhyāṁ rāmakṛṣṇayoḥ badaryāśramamapyatra naranārāyaṇāspadam

—where I shall descend in the two forms of Rama and Krishna; and here too, the hermitage of Badari, the abode of Nara and Narayana—

Verse 13 (padma.6.200.13)

vidadhāmi sadā yatra vasāmi suranāyaka haridvāraṁ puṣkaraṁ ca tīrthadvayamanuttamam

—I shall establish, O lord of gods, where I ever dwell; and Haridvara and Pushkara, that unsurpassed pair of tirthas—

Verse 14 (padma.6.200.14)

tadapi sthāpayāmyatra tavaiva hitakāmyayā naimiṣeyāni tīrthāni yāni kālaṁjare girau

—which are on the bank of the Sarasvati, I shall establish them here indeed. Narada said: O Shiva, hearing this most auspicious speech of Hari, and having done accordingly—

Verse 16 (padma.6.200.16)

—Brahma, Shiva, and the others did as they had been told. In that place, made of all tirthas, that lord of the gods—

Verse 17 (padma.6.200.17)

svarṇayūpairbahumakhairīje bhūyo ramāpatim ratnaprasthāni viprebhyaḥ kṛṣṇasya purato dadau

—worshipped the Lord of Rama once more with golden sacrificial posts, in many sacrifices; before Krishna, he gave measures of jewels to the brahmins.

Verse 18 (padma.6.200.18)

nārāyaṇaḥ samastātmā mamāyamiti tuṣyatu iṁdraprasthamidaṁ tīrthaṁ tataḥprabhṛti kathyate

‘May Narayana, the soul of all, be pleased, thinking this to be mine’ — from that time onward this tirtha has been called Indraprastha.

Verse 19 (padma.6.200.19)

tasmai daduravitathāmāśiṣaṁ tatra saṁsadi iṁdrāya tava goviṁdo dānenānena tuṣyatu

tena puṇyena labdhaṁ te sakāmena surāspadam adhunā pūjito viṣṇurniḥkāmena tvayā makhaiḥ

‘—by that merit, performed with desire, you obtained the abode of the gods; now, Vishnu has been worshipped by you, free of desire, with sacrifices.’

smariṣyati nijaṁ karma kṛtamatra makhādikam tatsmṛtegṛrhamutsṛjya bhavāntīrthāni paryaṭan

‘—you shall remember your own deeds performed here — this sacrifice and the rest. Remembering that, having left your home behind, wandering the tirthas—’

Verse 26 (padma.6.200.26)

‘—then, mounting a celestial chariot brought by the attendants, radiant as the sun, you, having taken on a divine body, shall attain the abode of Shri Hari.’

Verse 27 (padma.6.200.27)

Having duly completed the sacrifices, and the golden sacrificial posts here, he took leave of the gods headed by Madhava, whom he had worshipped.

Verse 29 (padma.6.200.29)

ṛtvijo brahmaṇaḥ putrānabhyarcya ca dhanādibhiḥ bṛhaspatiṁ puraskṛtya yayau śakrastriviṣṭapam

Having honored the officiating priests, the sons of Brahma, with wealth and other gifts, and placing Brihaspati at his head, Shakra went to the triple heaven.

Verse 30 (padma.6.200.30)

tatra rājyaṁ vidhāyeṁdro haribhaktiyutaḥ śive avātaradbhuvi kṣīṇapuṇye hāstinapattane

O Shiva, having ruled his kingdom there, endowed with devotion to Hari, Indra, when his merit was exhausted, descended to earth at the city of Hastinapura.

Verse 31 (padma.6.200.31)

śivaśarmā dvijaḥ kaścidvedavedāṁgapāragaḥ tasya bhāryā guṇavatī nāmnānvarthavatī bhṛśam

There was a brahmin named Shivasharma, versed in the Vedas and Vedangas; his wife, named Gunavati, was truly worthy of her name.

Verse 32 (padma.6.200.32)

tasyāṁ jātaḥ suvelāyāmiṁdraḥ śrīpatisevakaḥ jyotirvidaḥ samāhūtā lagnaṁ dṛṣṭvā babhāṣire

In her, at an auspicious hour, Indra, servant of the Lord of Shri, was born. Astrologers, summoned, examined the horoscope and spoke:

Verse 33 (padma.6.200.33)

jyotirvida ūcuḥ- śivaśarmannayaṁ bālaḥ tava bhāvī haripriyaḥ uddhariṣyati te vaṁśaṁ brūmaḥ satyaṁ na vai mṛṣā

The astrologers said: ‘O Shivasharma, this child is destined to be dear to Hari; he shall uplift your lineage — we speak the truth, not falsehood.’

Verse 34 (padma.6.200.34)

trayodaśābdadeho yaḥ sāṁgaṁ vedacatuṣṭayam adhītajñānasaṁpanno vivāhaṁ tu kariṣyati

‘At the age of thirteen years, having studied the four Vedas together with their limbs, endowed with knowledge, he shall marry—’

Verse 35 (padma.6.200.35)

punarutpādya satputraṁ vānaprastho bhaviṣyati tīrtheṣu paryaṭandhīraḥ saṁnyāsaṁ dhārayiṣyati

‘—and, after begetting a good son, he shall become a forest-dweller; wandering the tirthas, steadfast, he shall take up sannyasa.’

Verse 36 (padma.6.200.36)

iṁdrasya khāṁḍavavane yamunāsti saridvarā tattīresti hariprasthaṁ maraṇaṁ tatra yāsyati

‘In Indra's Khandava forest is the excellent river Yamuna; on its bank is Hariprastha — there he shall go to his death.’

Verse 37 (padma.6.200.37)

nārada uvāca- gaṇakoditamākarṇya śivaśarmā śivaṁ vacaḥ cakāra viṣṇuśarmāṇaṁ nāmnā nijasutaṁ tadā

Narada said: Hearing this auspicious speech uttered by the astrologers, Shivasharma then named his own son Vishnusharma.

Verse 38 (padma.6.200.38)

tānvisṛjya ca vittena ciṁtayāmāsa buddhimān dhanyo'haṁ yasya me putro viṣṇubhakto bhaviṣyati

Having dismissed them with wealth, that wise man thought: ‘I am blessed, whose son shall become a devotee of Vishnu.’

Verse 39 (padma.6.200.39)

sādhayiṣyati putro'yamāśramāṁścaturo mama mariṣyati ca sattīrthe madanyaḥ ko'sti bhāgyavān

‘This son of mine shall accomplish the four stages of life, and shall die at a sacred tirtha — who is more fortunate than I?’

Verse 40 (padma.6.200.40)

evaṁ viciṁtya manasā jātakarmādyakārayat śiśordvijātipravaraiḥ śivaśarmā śubhe'hani

Thinking thus in his mind, Shivasharma, on an auspicious day, had the birth-rites and other ceremonies for the child performed by the foremost of the twice-born.

Verse 41 (padma.6.200.41)

atha saptasvatīteṣu varṣeṣu dvijasattamaḥ sutopanayanaṁ cakre caitramāsyaṣṭame'bdake

Then, when seven years had passed, that best of brahmins performed his son's sacred-thread ceremony in the month of Chaitra, in his eighth year.

Verse 42 (padma.6.200.42)

ādvādaśābdādadhyāpya vedānanvagataḥ sutam śivaśarmā śive rājanyuyoja saha bhāryayā

Having taught the Vedas until the twelfth year, and then, O king, having attended to his son, Shivasharma married him to a wife, O Shiva.

Verse 43 (padma.6.200.43)

viṣṇuśarmā svabhāryāyāṁ putramutpādya buddhimān cakāra tīrthayātrāyāṁ mano nirviṣayaṁ svakam

Vishnusharma, that wise man, having begotten a son with his own wife, turned his own mind, free of worldly attachment, toward a pilgrimage to the tirthas.

Verse 44 (padma.6.200.44)

abhyetya pitaraṁ prāha natvā taccaraṇadvayam viṣṇuśarmā mahāprājño munivākyamanusmaran

Coming to his father and bowing to his two feet, Vishnusharma, of great wisdom, remembering the sages' words, said:

Verse 45 (padma.6.200.45)

viṣṇuśarmovāca - anujānīhi māṁ tāta viṣṇumārādhayāmyaham tṛtīyāśramamāsādya satsaṁgatividhāyakam

Vishnusharma said: ‘Give me your leave, father; I shall worship Vishnu, taking up the third stage of life, which brings about the company of the saintly.’

Verse 46 (padma.6.200.46)

dārāgāradhanāpatyasuhṛdaḥ kṣaṇabhaṁgurāḥ budbudā iva toyeṣu sudhīsteṣu na sajjate

‘Wife, house, wealth, children, and friends are as fragile as a moment, like bubbles in water; the wise do not become attached to them.’

Verse 47 (padma.6.200.47)

svādhyāyena ca saṁtatyā mayā tīrṇamṛṇadvayam tīrtheṣu kāmarahito yaṣṭumicchāmi keśavam

‘By study of the Vedas and by begetting offspring, I have crossed over two of my debts. Free of desire, I wish to worship Keshava at the tirthas.’

Verse 48 (padma.6.200.48)

sanyastaguṇarāgo'haṁ paścāttīrthottame kvacit sthātumicchāmyahaṁ tāvadyāvatprārabdhamasti me

‘Having renounced attachment to the gunas, afterward I wish to remain at some excellent tirtha for as long as my allotted lifespan lasts.’

Verse 49 (padma.6.200.49)

ityuktastena putreṇa sa pitā buddhimattaraḥ smṛtvā jyotirvidāṁ vākyamāha saṁsāranispṛhaḥ

Thus addressed by his son, that father, most wise, remembering the astrologers' words, himself now free of desire for worldly existence, said:

Verse 50 (padma.6.200.50)

śivaśarmovāca- caturthāśramakālo'yaṁ mamāpi nirahaṁkṛteḥ viṣayānviṣavattyaktvā seviṣye keśavāmṛtam

Shivasharma said: ‘This is the time for the fourth stage of life for me too, freed of egoism; abandoning sense-objects as if they were poison, I shall partake of the nectar of Keshava.’

Verse 51 (padma.6.200.51)

gṛhe mama manaḥ putra ramate nādya vārddhake ānītasya vanādbaddhvā gajasyeva nṛpālaye

‘My mind, O son, no longer delights in this household in old age — like an elephant brought from the forest and bound in a king's palace.’

Verse 52 (padma.6.200.52)

tavānujaṁ suśarmāyaṁ kuṭuṁbaṁ dhārayiṣyati āvābhyāmujjhitaṁ vidyāśrīkulābhyāṁ yathā naram

‘Your younger brother, Sushrama, shall support the family, cast off by both of us, like a man abandoned by wisdom and prosperity together.’

Verse 53 (padma.6.200.53)

pravrajaṁtaṁ tu māmeva tava mātā pativratā anuyāsyati mārtaṁḍaṁ yathā kāṁtirdinātyaye

‘As I go forth into renunciation, your chaste mother shall follow me alone, just as light follows the sun at the day's end.’

Verse 54 (padma.6.200.54)

tasmādāvāmavijñāto tayā tāta tavāṁbayā gacchāvaściṁtayaṁtau śrīhareḥ pādasaroruham

‘Therefore, O son, unknown even to your mother, we two shall depart, our minds fixed upon the lotus feet of Shri Hari.’

Verse 55 (padma.6.200.55)

nārada uvāca- ityālocya mumukṣū tau niśīthe tamasāvṛte suptaṁ kuṭuṁbamutsṛjya gṛhānniryāya jagmatuḥ

Narada said: Having thus resolved, those two, seeking liberation, in the depth of a night wrapped in darkness, leaving behind their sleeping family, went forth from their home.

Verse 56 (padma.6.200.56)

sahaiva paryaṭaṁtau tau sutīrthe nirahaṁkṛtī śive'traśivade tīrthe śakraprasthe samīyatuḥ

Wandering together, free of pride, among the excellent tirthas, they arrived, O Shiva, at this well-being-granting tirtha, at Shakraprastha.

Verse 57 (padma.6.200.57)

atrāgataḥ svavihitānpūrvajanmani yūpakān viṣṇuśarmā śamālokya sasmāra harisaṁgamam

Having come here, Vishnusharma, beholding calmly the sacrificial posts he himself had set up in a former birth, remembered his meeting with Hari.

Verse 58 (padma.6.200.58)

ūce ca pitaraṁ dhīmānśakra āsamahaṁ purā mayātra vihitā yajñā mādhavaprīṇanecchayā
