Verse 1 (padma.6.201.1)

नारद उचाव- अथावरुह्य तौ वृक्षात्पितृपुत्रौ सुविस्मितौ । दृष्ट्वा हरिपदप्राप्तिमभूतां पापिनोरपि

nārada ucāva- athāvaruhya tau vṛkṣātpitṛputrau suvismitau dṛṣṭvā haripadaprāptimabhūtāṁ pāpinorapi

Narada said: Then, the father and son, greatly astonished, having witnessed even sinners attaining the abode of Hari, climbed down from the tree.

Verse 2 (padma.6.201.2)

शिवशर्माथ विप्रेंद्रः श्रुत्वा तीर्थस्तुतिं तदा । गणोक्तां विष्णुशर्माणमुवाच सुतमात्मनः

śivaśarmātha vipreṁdraḥ śrutvā tīrthastutiṁ tadā gaṇoktāṁ viṣṇuśarmāṇamuvāca sutamātmanaḥ

Then the foremost brahmin Shivasharma, having heard that praise of the tirtha spoken by the attendants, said to his own son Vishnusharma:

Verse 3 (padma.6.201.3)

शिवशर्मोवाच- यत्पदं न सुलभं द्विजन्मनां साधितेन तपसापि लीलया । प्रापतुः शबरदंष्ट्रिणौ च तत्तीर्थराजमहिमा विलोक्य ताम्

śivaśarmovāca- yatpadaṁ na sulabhaṁ dvijanmanāṁ sādhitena tapasāpi līlayā prāpatuḥ śabaradaṁṣṭriṇau ca tattīrtharājamahimā vilokya tām

Shivasharma said: ‘That abode not easily attained by the twice-born even through hard-won austerity, was attained playfully by a hunter and a fanged beast — beholding this, one can only marvel at the greatness of this king of tirthas.’

Verse 4 (padma.6.201.4)

जन्मनः प्रभृति तावदामृतेः पापिनावपि च यत्प्रभावतः । जग्मतुः सुत हरेः सरूपतामस्य तीर्थवृषभस्य का स्तुतिः

janmanaḥ prabhṛti tāvadāmṛteḥ pāpināvapi ca yatprabhāvataḥ jagmatuḥ suta hareḥ sarūpatāmasya tīrthavṛṣabhasya kā stutiḥ

‘Sinners from birth until death — by whose power they attained a form equal to Hari's own, O son — what praise is adequate for this foremost of tirthas?’

Verse 5 (padma.6.201.5)

शुद्धसत्वमपि रूपमैश्वरं क्वाम्बुजन्मजनिदेवदुर्ल्लभम् । तामसौ क्व मृगनाथभिल्लकौ किं तु तीर्थमिदमद्भुतक्रियम्

śuddhasatvamapi rūpamaiśvaraṁ kvāmbujanmajanidevadurllabham tāmasau kva mṛganāthabhillakau kiṁ tu tīrthamidamadbhutakriyam

‘Where is that divine form of pure goodness, hard to attain even for gods born from the lotus-born? And where were that lion and hunter, so given to tamas? Yet how wondrous is the working of this tirtha!’

Verse 6 (padma.6.201.6)

तात भो पतति वेधसः पदात्जंतुरंतमधिगम्य कर्मणाम् । अत्र देवगुरुनिर्मिते मृतिं प्राप्य माधवपदान्न विच्युतिः

tāta bho patati vedhasaḥ padātjaṁturaṁtamadhigamya karmaṇām atra devagurunirmite mṛtiṁ prāpya mādhavapadānna vicyutiḥ

‘O child, a creature falls even from the position of Brahma when the end of its accumulated karma comes; but, attaining death here, in this place made by the teacher of the gods, there is no falling away from the abode of Madhava.’

Verse 7 (padma.6.201.7)

नारद उवाच- एवं प्रत्यक्षमालोक्य माहात्म्यं स द्विजोत्तमः । तीर्थस्यास्य गुरो राजन्स्नातुं तत्र प्रचक्रमे

nārada uvāca- evaṁ pratyakṣamālokya māhātmyaṁ sa dvijottamaḥ tīrthasyāsya guro rājansnātuṁ tatra pracakrame

Narada said: Having thus beheld with his own eyes the greatness of this tirtha of the guru, O king, that best of brahmins set about to bathe there.

Verse 8 (padma.6.201.8)

मुख दंत पदानां सः कृत्वा शुद्धिं च चेतसः । पंचकच्छः शिखाबंधोपग्रही माधवं स्मरन्

mukha daṁta padānāṁ saḥ kṛtvā śuddhiṁ ca cetasaḥ paṁcakacchaḥ śikhābaṁdhopagrahī mādhavaṁ smaran

Having purified his mouth, teeth, and feet, and his mind, tucking his garment in five folds, binding his tuft of hair, remembering Madhava—

Verse 9 (padma.6.201.9)

अश्वक्रांतेति श्लोकेन पाठेन तटमृत्तिकाम् । स्पृशंस्तयैव विदधत्तिलकं जलमाविशत्

aśvakrāṁteti ślokena pāṭhena taṭamṛttikām spṛśaṁstayaiva vidadhattilakaṁ jalamāviśat

—reciting the verse beginning ‘Ashvakranta,’ and touching the mud of the bank with it, and marking his tilaka with that same mud, he entered the water.

Verse 10 (padma.6.201.10)

तत्र प्रवाहाभिमुखो निमज्जन्पुनरुत्थितः । पुनर्मग्नो हरिं स्मृत्वा गंगां च जनपावनीम्

tatra pravāhābhimukho nimajjanpunarutthitaḥ punarmagno hariṁ smṛtvā gaṁgāṁ ca janapāvanīm

There, facing the current, he immersed himself, rose up again, and, remembering Hari and the Ganga, purifier of people, immersed himself once more.

Verse 11 (padma.6.201.11)

अयोध्याद्यापुरीः सप्त पुनरुत्थाय संस्मरन् । पुनर्ममज्ज सलिले गोविंदार्पितमानसः

ayodhyādyāpurīḥ sapta punarutthāya saṁsmaran punarmamajja salile goviṁdārpitamānasaḥ

Rising up again, remembering the seven sacred cities beginning with Ayodhya, he immersed himself once more in the water, his mind offered up to Govinda.

Verse 12 (padma.6.201.12)

कृत्वा यथाविधिस्नानं धौतवस्त्रे च पर्यधात् । बहिरागत्य तिलकं चक्रे च द्विजसत्तमः

kṛtvā yathāvidhisnānaṁ dhautavastre ca paryadhāt bahirāgatya tilakaṁ cakre ca dvijasattamaḥ

Having thus duly bathed, and put on washed garments, that best of brahmins came out and applied his tilaka.

Verse 13 (padma.6.201.13)

करपादशिखासूत्रैर्दर्भांश्च विदधद्वशी । संध्यां चकार विधिवत्तर्पणं त्रिविधं तथा

karapādaśikhāsūtrairdarbhāṁśca vidadhadvaśī saṁdhyāṁ cakāra vidhivattarpaṇaṁ trividhaṁ tathā

Placing kusha grass on his hand, feet, tuft, and sacred thread, that self-controlled man duly performed the twilight rites, and likewise the threefold libation.

Verse 14 (padma.6.201.14)

सूर्याय कुसुमैर्दत्त्वा स जलैरर्घमादृतः । शिरोबद्धांजलिपुटो नमश्चक्रे द्विजोत्तमः

sūryāya kusumairdattvā sa jalairarghamādṛtaḥ śirobaddhāṁjalipuṭo namaścakre dvijottamaḥ

Offering flowers to the sun, and, with due respect, offering him water, that best of brahmins, his folded hands raised to his head, made obeisance.

Verse 15 (padma.6.201.15)

आवाहनादि नैवेद्यपर्यंतमथ विप्रराट् । जगत्पूज्यपदाब्जस्य विष्णोः पूजामचीकरत्

āvāhanādi naivedyaparyaṁtamatha viprarāṭ jagatpūjyapadābjasya viṣṇoḥ pūjāmacīkarat

Then that king among brahmins performed the worship of Vishnu, whose lotus feet are worshipped by the world, from invocation through to the offering of food.

Verse 16 (padma.6.201.16)

कृतक्रियः सूपविष्टः तादृशं सुतमात्मनः । जगाद संस्मरन्पूर्वजन्मकर्मणि कृत्स्नशः

kṛtakriyaḥ sūpaviṣṭaḥ tādṛśaṁ sutamātmanaḥ jagāda saṁsmaranpūrvajanmakarmaṇi kṛtsnaśaḥ

His rites completed, seated comfortably, he spoke to his own son of that kind, remembering fully the deeds of his former birth:

Verse 17 (padma.6.201.17)

शिवशर्मोवाच- विष्णुशर्मन्न ते मिथ्या वाक्यं तात यतः स्मृतिः । अत्र स्नानेन मे जाता पूर्वेषां जन्मकर्मणाम्

śivaśarmovāca- viṣṇuśarmanna te mithyā vākyaṁ tāta yataḥ smṛtiḥ atra snānena me jātā pūrveṣāṁ janmakarmaṇām

Shivasharma said: ‘O Vishnusharma, your words were not false, my son — for by bathing here, I have gained memory of the deeds of my former births.’

Verse 18 (padma.6.201.18)

आकर्णय माहाभाग कथयामि तवाग्रतः । पुराहमन्वये जातो विशां धनिकधर्मिणाम्

ākarṇaya māhābhāga kathayāmi tavāgrataḥ purāhamanvaye jāto viśāṁ dhanikadharmiṇām

‘Listen, O greatly fortunate one, I shall tell it before you. Formerly, I was born in a lineage of wealthy, righteous merchants.’

Verse 19 (padma.6.201.19)

पिता मे शरभो नाम्ना कान्यकुब्जे पुरेऽवसन् । वाणिज्येनार्जयन्वित्तं भूरिधर्मधनाश्रितः

pitā me śarabho nāmnā kānyakubje pure'vasan vāṇijyenārjayanvittaṁ bhūridharmadhanāśritaḥ

‘My father, named Sharabha, dwelt in the city of Kanyakubja, earning wealth through trade, resorting to abundant merit through wealth.’

Verse 20 (padma.6.201.20)

व्यतीतस्तु महान्कालस्तस्य नाभवदात्मजः । जरागृहीतदेहस्य तच्चिंतातुरचेतसः

vyatītastu mahānkālastasya nābhavadātmajaḥ jarāgṛhītadehasya tacciṁtāturacetasaḥ

‘A great length of time passed, yet he had no son; his body seized by old age, his mind tormented by that very worry.’

Verse 21 (padma.6.201.21)

अचिंतयदहोरात्रमिति वैश्यवरस्तदा । विना सुतेन मे व्यर्थं धनं भूर्यपि संचितम्

aciṁtayadahorātramiti vaiśyavarastadā vinā sutena me vyarthaṁ dhanaṁ bhūryapi saṁcitam

‘—day and night that excellent merchant thought thus: “Without a son, this wealth of mine, however abundant I have accumulated, is useless.“’

Verse 22 (padma.6.201.22)

ऋते सुतमृणीलोके पितॄणां धनवानपि । सजलोऽपि विना वर्षं चातकानां यथा घनः

ṛte sutamṛṇīloke pitṝṇāṁ dhanavānapi sajalo'pi vinā varṣaṁ cātakānāṁ yathā ghanaḥ

‘“Without a son, a man remains in debt to his ancestors in this world, even if he possesses wealth — like a rain-cloud, even full of water, that fails to shower upon the chataka birds.“’

Verse 23 (padma.6.201.23)

पुमान्जयति संतत्या विश्वं धर्मधुरीणया । शक्त्या त्रिविधया राजा विपक्षमिव दुर्जयम्

pumānjayati saṁtatyā viśvaṁ dharmadhurīṇayā śaktyā trividhayā rājā vipakṣamiva durjayam

‘“A man conquers the world through righteous progeny, just as a king conquers an unconquerable enemy through the threefold power.“’

Verse 24 (padma.6.201.24)

प्रीणाति संततिः शुद्धा सुमनः पितृमानवान् । मित्रप्रत्यर्थ्यु यदासीनान्सूनृता वाग्यथेरिता

prīṇāti saṁtatiḥ śuddhā sumanaḥ pitṛmānavān mitrapratyarthyu yadāsīnānsūnṛtā vāgyatheritā

‘“Pure progeny gladdens both the well-disposed ancestors and living men, just as kindly speech, when uttered, gladdens both friend and rival seated nearby.“’

Verse 25 (padma.6.201.25)

उदयस्थेन पुत्रेण वर्द्धते स्वयशः पितुः । निर्मलं द्विजराजेन नीरं तीरनिधेरिव

udayasthena putreṇa varddhate svayaśaḥ pituḥ nirmalaṁ dvijarājena nīraṁ tīranidheriva

‘“By a rising son, a father's own fame grows, just as the water of the ocean grows spotless through the light of the moon.“’

Verse 26 (padma.6.201.26)

तस्माद्यतेत्सुतोत्पत्यै शरीरेण धनेन वा । तमृते हि द्वयं व्यर्थं जनानां तडिदायुषाम्

tasmādyatetsutotpatyai śarīreṇa dhanena vā tamṛte hi dvayaṁ vyarthaṁ janānāṁ taḍidāyuṣām

‘“Therefore one should strive for the begetting of a son, whether with body or wealth; for without it, both are useless for men whose lives are as fleeting as lightning.“’

Verse 27 (padma.6.201.27)

एवं चिंतयतस्तस्य गृहे मुनिवरस्तदा । देवलोऽतीद्रियज्ञानो वरं दातुं समाययौ

evaṁ ciṁtayatastasya gṛhe munivarastadā devalo'tīdriyajñāno varaṁ dātuṁ samāyayau

‘As he was thinking thus, the excellent sage Devala, possessed of supra-sensory knowledge, came to his house to bestow a boon.’

Verse 28 (padma.6.201.28)

आगतं तं समालोक्य प्रत्युत्थायासनात्पिता । दत्त्वार्घमथ पाद्यं च ववंदे शिरसा मुनिम्

āgataṁ taṁ samālokya pratyutthāyāsanātpitā dattvārghamatha pādyaṁ ca vavaṁde śirasā munim

‘Seeing him arrive, my father rose from his seat, offered him arghya and water for his feet, and bowed his head to the sage.’

Verse 29 (padma.6.201.29)

उपवेश्यासने दत्ते स्वहस्तेन पिता मम । पप्रच्छ च मुनिश्रेष्ठं देवलं देवदर्शनम्

upaveśyāsane datte svahastena pitā mama papraccha ca muniśreṣṭhaṁ devalaṁ devadarśanam

‘Having seated him upon a seat given with his own hand, my father questioned the excellent sage Devala, whose vision was divine:’

Verse 30 (padma.6.201.30)

स्वागतं तु मुनिश्रेष्ठ शमस्ति भवतां कुले । तपः स्वाध्यायनियमा निष्प्रत्यूहा भवंति च

svāgataṁ tu muniśreṣṭha śamasti bhavatāṁ kule tapaḥ svādhyāyaniyamā niṣpratyūhā bhavaṁti ca

‘“Welcome, O excellent sage; is there well-being in your community? Are your austerities, Vedic study, and observances proceeding without obstacle?“’

Verse 31 (padma.6.201.31)

काले चातिथयः कच्चिदायांति भवदाश्रमे । कच्चिदाश्रमवृक्षा वः फलंति मनसेप्सितम्

kāle cātithayaḥ kaccidāyāṁti bhavadāśrame kaccidāśramavṛkṣā vaḥ phalaṁti manasepsitam

‘“Do guests arrive in due season at your hermitage? Do the trees of your hermitage bear fruit as your minds desire?“’

Verse 32 (padma.6.201.32)

व्याघ्रादयो न कुर्वंति कच्चिद्वैरं मृगादिभिः । त्वदीयाश्रममभ्येत्य भ्रातरो भ्रातृभिर्यथा

vyāghrādayo na kurvaṁti kaccidvairaṁ mṛgādibhiḥ tvadīyāśramamabhyetya bhrātaro bhrātṛbhiryathā

‘“Do tigers and other such beasts, upon coming to your hermitage, refrain from enmity with the deer and other creatures, like brothers with brothers?“’

Verse 33 (padma.6.201.33)

तवाटनं भुवि मुदे गृहिणामन्यथा कथम् । तेषां गृहाधिमग्नानां दर्शनं क्व भवादृशः

tavāṭanaṁ bhuvi mude gṛhiṇāmanyathā katham teṣāṁ gṛhādhimagnānāṁ darśanaṁ kva bhavādṛśaḥ

‘“Your wandering upon this earth is for the joy of householders — otherwise, how could such as they, immersed in household affairs, ever obtain the sight of one such as you?“’

Verse 34 (padma.6.201.34)

हरिपादरजोबुद्धेः कामं कामो न कुत्रचित् । मुने तव तथाप्याशु हेतुमागमने वद

haripādarajobuddheḥ kāmaṁ kāmo na kutracit mune tava tathāpyāśu hetumāgamane vada

‘“For one whose mind is fixed on the dust of Hari's feet, there is no desire anywhere. Yet, O sage, tell me quickly the reason for your coming.“’

Verse 35 (padma.6.201.35)

शिवशर्मोवाच- इत्युक्तस्तेन स मुनिर्देवलो देवपूजितः । अब्रवीत्तन्मनोभावं ज्ञातुकामो विशांपतिम्

śivaśarmovāca- ityuktastena sa munirdevalo devapūjitaḥ abravīttanmanobhāvaṁ jñātukāmo viśāṁpatim

Shivasharma said: Thus addressed, that sage Devala, worshipped by the gods, wishing to know the state of his mind, spoke to the lord of the merchants.

Verse 36 (padma.6.201.36)

देवल उवाच- वैश्यवर्य त्वया भूरि धनं धर्मेण संचितम् । करोषि येन धर्मज्ञ नित्यनैमित्तिकी क्रियाः

devala uvāca- vaiśyavarya tvayā bhūri dhanaṁ dharmeṇa saṁcitam karoṣi yena dharmajña nityanaimittikī kriyāḥ

Devala said: ‘O excellent merchant, abundant wealth has been accumulated by you through righteous means, with which, O knower of dharma, you perform the regular and occasional rites.’

Verse 37 (padma.6.201.37)

आदरं राजसदसि धनेन लभते नरः । सुभटः शत्रुसंग्रामे विक्रमेण यथा जयम्

ādaraṁ rājasadasi dhanena labhate naraḥ subhaṭaḥ śatrusaṁgrāme vikrameṇa yathā jayam

‘A man obtains respect in a king's court through wealth, just as a warrior obtains victory in battle against enemies through valor.’

Verse 38 (padma.6.201.38)

गृहस्थस्तु धनं प्राप्य परां पुष्टिं व्रजत्यलम् । शरत्परिणतं सस्यमनड्वानिव विश्पते

gṛhasthastu dhanaṁ prāpya parāṁ puṣṭiṁ vrajatyalam śaratpariṇataṁ sasyamanaḍvāniva viśpate

‘A householder, having obtained wealth, attains supreme flourishing, O lord of men, like a bullock thriving on grain ripened in autumn.’

Verse 39 (padma.6.201.39)

धनिनां न विमुंचंति बंधवोऽन्ये च ये जनाः । मधुमत्सुमनो युक्तं पादपं मधुपा इव

dhanināṁ na vimuṁcaṁti baṁdhavo'nye ca ye janāḥ madhumatsumano yuktaṁ pādapaṁ madhupā iva

‘Relatives and other people do not abandon the wealthy, just as bees do not abandon a honey-laden, blossoming tree.’

Verse 40 (padma.6.201.40)

धनाभावेन गृहिणां कृशत्वमुपजायते । सर्वतो ग्रीष्मसमये नभसां सरसामिव

dhanābhāvena gṛhiṇāṁ kṛśatvamupajāyate sarvato grīṣmasamaye nabhasāṁ sarasāmiva

‘For lack of wealth, householders become emaciated, like lakes reflecting the sky, everywhere shrinking in the summer season.’

Verse 41 (padma.6.201.41)

तद्धनं वर्त्तते भूरि गृहे तव विशांपते । कुतः कृशत्वमंगानां गोप्यं चेन्न वदाद्य मे

taddhanaṁ varttate bhūri gṛhe tava viśāṁpate kutaḥ kṛśatvamaṁgānāṁ gopyaṁ cenna vadādya me

‘That abundant wealth exists in your house, O lord of the merchants; whence, then, this emaciation of your limbs? If it is not to be concealed, tell me now.’

Verse 42 (padma.6.201.42)

वैश्य उवाच- हितोपदेशविरता भवंतः पितरो यथा । गोपनीयं भवद्भ्यः किं मादृशैः पुत्रतां गतैः

vaiśya uvāca- hitopadeśaviratā bhavaṁtaḥ pitaro yathā gopanīyaṁ bhavadbhyaḥ kiṁ mādṛśaiḥ putratāṁ gataiḥ

The merchant said: ‘You, who never cease from giving beneficial counsel, are like fathers to us; what should such as I, who have become as your sons, conceal from you?’

Verse 43 (padma.6.201.43)

त्वत्प्रसादान्मुनिश्रेष्ठ सर्वतोऽस्ति शिवं मम । वार्द्धकेपि सुताभावो दुःखमेकमिदं मम

tvatprasādānmuniśreṣṭha sarvato'sti śivaṁ mama vārddhakepi sutābhāvo duḥkhamekamidaṁ mama

‘By your grace, O excellent sage, all is well with me in every way; but even in old age, the lack of a son — this is my one sorrow.’

Verse 44 (padma.6.201.44)

तस्मात्कृशत्वमंगानां विद्धि मे मुनिपुंगव । बिभेम्यहं पितृऋणाद्यतोऽधः पतनं नृणाम्

tasmātkṛśatvamaṁgānāṁ viddhi me munipuṁgava bibhemyahaṁ pitṛṛṇādyato'dhaḥ patanaṁ nṛṇām

‘Know, therefore, O foremost of sages, that this is the cause of the emaciation of my limbs. I fear the debt to my ancestors, from which comes the downfall of men.’

Verse 45 (padma.6.201.45)

तमुपायं कुरु मुने येन स्यां सुतवानहम् । किंचित्कर्तुमशक्यं न भूतलेऽत्र भवादृशैः

tamupāyaṁ kuru mune yena syāṁ sutavānaham kiṁcitkartumaśakyaṁ na bhūtale'tra bhavādṛśaiḥ

‘Devise for me, O sage, that means by which I may become the father of a son. There is nothing on this earth impossible for such as you to accomplish.’

Verse 46 (padma.6.201.46)

शिवशर्मोवाच- इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य वैश्यवर्यस्य देवलः । मनः क्षणं स्थिरं कृत्वा दध्यौ मीलितलोचनः

śivaśarmovāca- ityākarṇya vacastasya vaiśyavaryasya devalaḥ manaḥ kṣaṇaṁ sthiraṁ kṛtvā dadhyau mīlitalocanaḥ

Shivasharma said: Hearing these words of the excellent merchant, Devala, steadying his mind for a moment, closed his eyes and meditated.

Verse 47 (padma.6.201.47)

संततेर्मत्पितुर्दृष्ट्वा प्रतिबंधस्य कारणम् । देवलोतींद्रियज्ञानी बभाषे कारयन्स्मृतिम्

saṁtatermatpiturdṛṣṭvā pratibaṁdhasya kāraṇam devalotīṁdriyajñānī babhāṣe kārayansmṛtim

Devala, of supra-sensory knowledge, having perceived the cause of my father's obstacle to progeny, spoke, recalling it to memory:

Verse 48 (padma.6.201.48)

देवल उवाच- एकदा तु पुरा वैश्य तवेयं धर्मचारिणी । यं चकार स्वचित्ते तं कथयामि मनोरथम्

devala uvāca- ekadā tu purā vaiśya taveyaṁ dharmacāriṇī yaṁ cakāra svacitte taṁ kathayāmi manoratham

Devala said: ‘Once, formerly, O merchant, your righteous wife made in her heart a certain resolve; I shall tell you of that wish.’

Verse 49 (padma.6.201.49)

गुर्विणी यद्यहं गौरि भवेऽहं शंभुवल्लभे । तदा त्वां तोषयिष्यामि षड्रसान्वितभोजनैः

gurviṇī yadyahaṁ gauri bhave'haṁ śaṁbhuvallabhe tadā tvāṁ toṣayiṣyāmi ṣaḍrasānvitabhojanaiḥ

‘“O Gauri, beloved of Shambhu, if I become pregnant, then I shall gratify you with foods possessing all six flavors—“’

Verse 50 (padma.6.201.50)

धूपदीपकमालाभिस्तांबूलैर्नृत्यबाधकैः । तंत्रीमुखोद्गतैर्गीतैर्नानाविधविलेपनैः

dhūpadīpakamālābhistāṁbūlairnṛtyabādhakaiḥ taṁtrīmukhodgatairgītairnānāvidhavilepanaiḥ

‘“—with incense, lamps, garlands, betel leaves, with dance and song, and with various kinds of unguents.“’

Verse 51 (padma.6.201.51)

एवं प्रतिश्रुत्य पुरः सखीनां दयिता तव । प्रतीक्षमाणा तं कालं तस्थौ तद्भक्तिसंयुता

evaṁ pratiśrutya puraḥ sakhīnāṁ dayitā tava pratīkṣamāṇā taṁ kālaṁ tasthau tadbhaktisaṁyutā

‘Having thus vowed before her friends, your beloved wife, filled with devotion to her, awaited that time.’

Verse 52 (padma.6.201.52)

तस्मिन्नेवाभवद्गर्भो मासेऽस्या योषितस्तव । ऊचुरेनां ततः सख्यः सर्वाः सस्नेहचेतसः

tasminnevābhavadgarbho māse'syā yoṣitastava ūcurenāṁ tataḥ sakhyaḥ sarvāḥ sasnehacetasaḥ

‘In that very season, pregnancy came upon your wife; then all her friends, their hearts full of affection, said to her:’

Verse 53 (padma.6.201.53)

यस्त्वया वांछितो गर्भो गौर्या संप्रतिपादितः । अतः प्रतिश्रुतं देव्याः पूजनं सुभगे कुरु

yastvayā vāṁchito garbho gauryā saṁpratipāditaḥ ataḥ pratiśrutaṁ devyāḥ pūjanaṁ subhage kuru

‘“That pregnancy you desired has been granted by Gauri; therefore, O fortunate one, perform the worship you vowed to the goddess.“’

Verse 54 (padma.6.201.54)

नोचेद्विकाराद्भवति विघ्नं तु तदनुष्ठितात् । तोषिता रोषिताश्चात्र देव्यो हि वरशापदाः

nocedvikārādbhavati vighnaṁ tu tadanuṣṭhitāt toṣitā roṣitāścātra devyo hi varaśāpadāḥ

‘“Otherwise, obstacles arise from that neglect through the disturbance it causes; goddesses, whether pleased or angered, indeed bestow either boons or curses.“’

Verse 55 (padma.6.201.55)

सखीभिरिति ते भार्या कथितेयं मुदान्विता । त्वामुवाच महाभागा विनयेन पतिव्रता

sakhībhiriti te bhāryā kathiteyaṁ mudānvitā tvāmuvāca mahābhāgā vinayena pativratā

‘Thus told by her friends, that highly fortunate, chaste wife of yours, filled with joy, spoke to you with humility:’

Verse 56 (padma.6.201.56)

नाथ पूजयितुं गौरीं वांछाम्यखिलकामदाम् । यत्प्रसादादहं याता वांछितार्थवती प्रभो

nātha pūjayituṁ gaurīṁ vāṁchāmyakhilakāmadām yatprasādādahaṁ yātā vāṁchitārthavatī prabho

‘“O lord, I wish to worship Gauri, giver of every desire — by whose grace, my lord, I have obtained my longed-for wish.“’

Verse 57 (padma.6.201.57)

वैश्यवर्य त्वमेवैतच्छ्रुत्वास्या वचनं शुभम् । अमन्यत गर्भवतीमेनां निजगृहेश्वरीम्

vaiśyavarya tvamevaitacchrutvāsyā vacanaṁ śubham amanyata garbhavatīmenāṁ nijagṛheśvarīm

‘O excellent merchant, you yourself, hearing these auspicious words of hers, understood your own household's mistress to be pregnant.’

Verse 58 (padma.6.201.58)

परमोत्सवया मोदमानः सद्यो भवानपि । भृत्यानाज्ञापयामास पूजावस्तूपपादने

paramotsavayā modamānaḥ sadyo bhavānapi bhṛtyānājñāpayāmāsa pūjāvastūpapādane

‘Rejoicing at once with the greatest festivity, you commanded your servants to procure the materials for worship.’

Verse 59 (padma.6.201.59)

तैरानाय्य समस्तानि वस्तूनि भवता ततः । अस्यै दत्तानि मध्वन्न द्राक्षा गंधादिकान्यपि

tairānāyya samastāni vastūni bhavatā tataḥ asyai dattāni madhvanna drākṣā gaṁdhādikānyapi

‘Having had all the items brought by them, you then gave to her honey, food, grapes, fragrances, and other such things.’

Verse 60 (padma.6.201.60)

ततो निजसखीः सर्वा आहूयेदमिदं जगौ । सख्यः समस्ताः सामग्री समानीतांबिकार्चने

tato nijasakhīḥ sarvā āhūyedamidaṁ jagau sakhyaḥ samastāḥ sāmagrī samānītāṁbikārcane

‘Then, calling all her own friends, she spoke thus: “O friends, this collected material for the worship of Ambika—“’

Verse 61 (padma.6.201.61)

नीत्वा पूजोपकरणं यूयं यातांबिकालयम् । संतोषयत तां देवीं पूजया विधिदृष्टया

nītvā pūjopakaraṇaṁ yūyaṁ yātāṁbikālayam saṁtoṣayata tāṁ devīṁ pūjayā vidhidṛṣṭayā

‘“—take, all of you, this apparatus of worship, and go to Ambika's temple; gratify that goddess with worship according to the prescribed rite.“’

Verse 62 (padma.6.201.62)

गुर्विणीति कुलेऽस्माकं न निर्याति गृहाद्बहिः । अतोऽहं नागमिष्यामि यूयं यात तदर्चने

gurviṇīti kule'smākaṁ na niryāti gṛhādbahiḥ ato'haṁ nāgamiṣyāmi yūyaṁ yāta tadarcane

‘“In our family, a pregnant woman does not go out of the house; therefore I shall not come — you go for her worship.“’

Verse 63 (padma.6.201.63)

इत्याज्ञप्तास्तु ताः सख्यो नीत्वोपकरणं ययुः । अंबिकालयमुन्मत्तभ्रमद्भ्रमरकेतनम्

ityājñaptāstu tāḥ sakhyo nītvopakaraṇaṁ yayuḥ aṁbikālayamunmattabhramadbhramaraketanam

‘Thus instructed, those friends, taking the materials, went to Ambika's temple, its banners with wildly circling bees—’

Verse 64 (padma.6.201.64)

कोकिलाकुलसंकेलि सहकारकुलाकुलम् । हंससारसचक्राह्वमंडितं स्वच्छसारसम्

kokilākulasaṁkeli sahakārakulākulam haṁsasārasacakrāhvamaṁḍitaṁ svacchasārasam

‘—crowded with mango trees full of the sportive cries of cuckoos, adorned with swans, cranes, and ruddy geese, its clear ponds full of cranes—’

Verse 65 (padma.6.201.65)

महादेवगुणालापि शुकसारिसमावृतम् । हारपूरालतासेके तत्परो मा सखीधरम्

mahādevaguṇālāpi śukasārisamāvṛtam hārapūrālatāseke tatparo mā sakhīdharam

‘—filled with parrots and mynas talking of Mahadeva's virtues, its garland-vines watered constantly—’

Verse 66 (padma.6.201.66)

उमापतेरुमापादन्यासपूतमहीतलम् । स्फटिकोपलसंबद्ध जलाधारसुरद्रुमम्

umāpaterumāpādanyāsapūtamahītalam sphaṭikopalasaṁbaddha jalādhārasuradrumam

‘—its ground purified by the placing of Uma's feet, its water-reservoirs set with crystal stones, amid celestial trees—’

Verse 67 (padma.6.201.67)

पार्वतीपतिसंनाट्य गायद्गंधर्वनादितम् । मन्दानिलमनाग्धूत चूतचंपककोरकम्

pārvatīpatisaṁnāṭya gāyadgaṁdharvanāditam mandānilamanāgdhūta cūtacaṁpakakorakam

‘—resounding with gandharvas singing of the dance of Parvati's lord, its mango and champak buds gently stirred by a soft breeze—’

Verse 68 (padma.6.201.68)

नृत्यन्मयूरनिर्ह्राद प्रतिनादिलतागृहम् । तल्लीलाचलविद्योतमानं रत्नलसत्प्रभम्

nṛtyanmayūranirhrāda pratinādilatāgṛham tallīlācalavidyotamānaṁ ratnalasatprabham

‘—its bowers of vines echoing with the calls of dancing peacocks, its playful hills gleaming, radiant with the luster of jewels.’

Verse 69 (padma.6.201.69)

तत्र गत्वा गिरिसुतां प्रणेमुस्ताः सभर्तृकाः । प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य ततो भक्त्या तां च बभाषिरे

tatra gatvā girisutāṁ praṇemustāḥ sabhartṛkāḥ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya tato bhaktyā tāṁ ca babhāṣire

‘Going there, those married women bowed to the daughter of the mountain; and, having circumambulated her, spoke to her with devotion:’

Verse 70 (padma.6.201.70)

जगदंबे नमतुभ्यं शन्नो देहि शिवप्रिये । त्वत्पूजार्थे समानीतो बलिरेष प्रगृह्यताम्

jagadaṁbe namatubhyaṁ śanno dehi śivapriye tvatpūjārthe samānīto balireṣa pragṛhyatām

‘“O mother of the universe, salutation to you; grant us well-being, O beloved of Shiva. This offering, brought for your worship, may it be accepted—“’

Verse 71 (padma.6.201.71)

वैश्यस्तु शरभो नाम्ना तस्यास्ति ललितांगना । तयाभिलषितो गर्भस्तत्प्राप्तौ तव पूजनम्

vaiśyastu śarabho nāmnā tasyāsti lalitāṁganā tayābhilaṣito garbhastatprāptau tava pūjanam

‘“—There is a merchant named Sharabha, whose wife is a graceful woman; she longed for pregnancy, and having attained it, vowed your worship—“’

Verse 72 (padma.6.201.72)

त्वत्प्रसादादभूत्तस्याः स गर्भः शंभुवल्लभे । त्वत्पूजनाय प्रहितो बलिरस्माभिरेषकः

tvatprasādādabhūttasyāḥ sa garbhaḥ śaṁbhuvallabhe tvatpūjanāya prahito balirasmābhireṣakaḥ

‘“—by your grace that pregnancy came about for her, O beloved of Shambhu; this offering has been sent by us for your worship—“’

Verse 73 (padma.6.201.73)

तस्याः कुले गर्भवती न निरेति बहिर्गृहात् । अतः सा नागता देवि प्रसीदैन गृहाण वै

tasyāḥ kule garbhavatī na nireti bahirgṛhāt ataḥ sā nāgatā devi prasīdaina gṛhāṇa vai

‘“—in her family, a pregnant woman does not go out of the house; therefore she has not come, O Goddess; be gracious, and please accept this.“’

Verse 74 (padma.6.201.74)

इत्युक्त्वा तां तदा वैश्य त्वत्स्त्रीसख्यस्तु तं बलिम् । समर्पयित्वा विधिवदानर्चुश्चंदनादिभिः

ityuktvā tāṁ tadā vaiśya tvatstrīsakhyastu taṁ balim samarpayitvā vidhivadānarcuścaṁdanādibhiḥ

‘Having said this, O merchant, your wife's friends, offering that gift, worshipped her duly with sandalwood and other offerings.’

Verse 75 (padma.6.201.75)

प्रतिवाक्यमलब्ध्वा ता गौर्या प्रत्याययुर्गृहम् । निजसख्यै समाचख्युर्विषण्णां तां शिवप्रियाम्

prativākyamalabdhvā tā gauryā pratyāyayurgṛham nijasakhyai samācakhyurviṣaṇṇāṁ tāṁ śivapriyām

‘Not receiving any reply from Gauri, they returned home, and told your wife that the beloved of Shiva had seemed displeased.’

Verse 76 (padma.6.201.76)

तासामाकर्ण्य वचनमिति वैश्य तवाबला । उन्मनाश्चिंतयामास कुतो गौरीनपि प्रिये

tāsāmākarṇya vacanamiti vaiśya tavābalā unmanāściṁtayāmāsa kuto gaurīnapi priye

‘Hearing their words, O merchant, your wife, distressed in mind, began to think: “Why did Gauri not become pleased—’

Verse 77 (padma.6.201.77)

सा जानाति यथा भक्तिस्तत्पूजाया कृता मया । तादृशीनां किमज्ञातं बाह्यं चाभ्यंतरं नृणाम्

sā jānāti yathā bhaktistatpūjāyā kṛtā mayā tādṛśīnāṁ kimajñātaṁ bāhyaṁ cābhyaṁtaraṁ nṛṇām

‘“—she knows well the devotion with which I performed her worship; what is hidden, outward or inward, from such as her, regarding men?“’

Verse 78 (padma.6.201.78)

न गताहं यतस्तत्र तज्जानात्यपि कारणम् । मया दत्तेन बलिना कुतः सा न तुतोष वै

na gatāhaṁ yatastatra tajjānātyapi kāraṇam mayā dattena balinā kutaḥ sā na tutoṣa vai

‘“Since I myself did not go there, she surely knows the reason for that too; why then was she not satisfied by the offering given by me?“’

Verse 79 (padma.6.201.79)

नाहमन्यत्प्रजानामि तदतोषे हि कारणम् । ऋते मदगतेस्तत्र नूनं रम्ये तदालये

nāhamanyatprajānāmi tadatoṣe hi kāraṇam ṛte madagatestatra nūnaṁ ramye tadālaye

‘“I know of no other reason for her displeasure, except my own not going there, to that lovely temple of hers.“’

Verse 80 (padma.6.201.80)

यदतीतं न तच्छक्यमन्यथाकर्तुमद्य वै । गर्भान्मुक्ता गमिष्यामि तत्पूजायै तदालये

yadatītaṁ na tacchakyamanyathākartumadya vai garbhānmuktā gamiṣyāmi tatpūjāyai tadālaye

‘“What has passed cannot now be undone; once freed from this pregnancy, I shall go myself to that temple for her worship.“’

Verse 81 (padma.6.201.81)

नमस्तस्यै महादेव भार्यायै सा करोतु शम् । इत्युक्त्वा दधती गर्भं तस्थौ वैश्य तवांगना

namastasyai mahādeva bhāryāyai sā karotu śam ityuktvā dadhatī garbhaṁ tasthau vaiśya tavāṁganā

‘“—Salutation to her, the wife of Mahadeva; may she bring about my well-being.“ Having said this, O merchant, your wife, still bearing the child, remained thus.’

Verse 82 (padma.6.201.82)

शिवशर्मोवाच- विष्णुशर्मन्निदं पूर्ववृत्तमाज्ञाय मत्पिता । पप्रच्छ मुनिशार्दूलं देवलं ज्ञानवत्तरम्

śivaśarmovāca- viṣṇuśarmannidaṁ pūrvavṛttamājñāya matpitā papraccha muniśārdūlaṁ devalaṁ jñānavattaram

Shivasharma said: O Vishnusharma, having learned this account of what had happened before, my father questioned that tiger among sages, Devala, so full of knowledge:

Verse 83 (padma.6.201.83)

वैश्य उवाच- मुने यथा प्रतिश्रुता पूजा ते स्नुषया तया । तथैवाकारि पार्वत्या विषादे कारणं वद

vaiśya uvāca- mune yathā pratiśrutā pūjā te snuṣayā tayā tathaivākāri pārvatyā viṣāde kāraṇaṁ vada

The merchant said: ‘O sage, the worship vowed by that daughter-in-law of yours was performed exactly as vowed to Parvati; tell me the reason for her displeasure.’

Verse 84 (padma.6.201.84)

यतोऽसौ न गता तत्र तज्जानाति शिवास्वतः । सखीभ्यश्चोक्तमस्यास्तद्विषण्णा सा कुतोभवत्

yato'sau na gatā tatra tajjānāti śivāsvataḥ sakhībhyaścoktamasyāstadviṣaṇṇā sā kutobhavat

‘Since she herself did not go there, and Shiva's wife knows this on her own, and this was told to her by her friends — why then was she displeased?’

Verse 85 (padma.6.201.85)

देवल उवाच-। वैश्यवर्य शृणुष्वेदं कारणं कथयामि ते । यतस्तस्या विषादोऽभूत्पार्वत्या गर्भनाशकः

devala uvāca- vaiśyavarya śṛṇuṣvedaṁ kāraṇaṁ kathayāmi te yatastasyā viṣādo'bhūtpārvatyā garbhanāśakaḥ

Devala said: ‘O excellent merchant, listen; I shall tell you the reason — the reason for Parvati's displeasure that destroyed your child.’

Verse 86 (padma.6.201.86)

निवृत्तासु सखीष्वस्याः संपूज्य स्कंदमातरम् । विजया पार्वतीं प्राह कौतूहलसमन्विता

nivṛttāsu sakhīṣvasyāḥ saṁpūjya skaṁdamātaram vijayā pārvatīṁ prāha kautūhalasamanvitā

‘When her friends had withdrawn, having worshipped the mother of Skanda, Vijaya, filled with curiosity, said to Parvati:’

Verse 87 (padma.6.201.87)

विजयोवाच- गिरिजे श्रद्धया तुभ्यं दत्तोमूभिरयं बलि । मानुषीभिः कुतः प्रीता नाभवस्त्वं वरानने

vijayovāca- girije śraddhayā tubhyaṁ dattomūbhirayaṁ bali mānuṣībhiḥ kutaḥ prītā nābhavastvaṁ varānane

Vijaya said: ‘O daughter of the mountain, this offering was given to you by these women with faith; why, O fair-faced one, were you not pleased by them?’

Verse 88 (padma.6.201.88)

धूपदीपकनैवेद्यैः पूजिता तोषहेतवे । प्रत्युताकारणं देवि त्वं विषादं कुतो गता

dhūpadīpakanaivedyaiḥ pūjitā toṣahetave pratyutākāraṇaṁ devi tvaṁ viṣādaṁ kuto gatā

‘You were worshipped with incense, lamps, and offerings of food, for the very purpose of pleasing you; instead, O Goddess, for what reason did you fall into displeasure?’

Verse 89 (padma.6.201.89)

देवल उवाच- इत्याकर्ण्य वचः सख्या देवी देववरार्चिता । अब्रवीद्विजयां वैश्य विषादे कारणं सखीम्

devala uvāca- ityākarṇya vacaḥ sakhyā devī devavarārcitā abravīdvijayāṁ vaiśya viṣāde kāraṇaṁ sakhīm

Devala said: Hearing her friend's words, the Goddess, worshipped by the best of gods, O merchant, told her friend Vijaya the reason for her displeasure:

Verse 90 (padma.6.201.90)

पार्वत्युवाच- विजये सखि जानामि वैश्यभार्या गृहाद्बहिः । निर्गंतुमक्षमां गर्भधारणास्वविवेकतः

pārvatyuvāca- vijaye sakhi jānāmi vaiśyabhāryā gṛhādbahiḥ nirgaṁtumakṣamāṁ garbhadhāraṇāsvavivekataḥ

Parvati said: ‘O friend Vijaya, I know that the merchant's wife, having conceived, is unable to leave the house, due to family custom rather than any lack of understanding on her part.’

Verse 91 (padma.6.201.91)

समागतास्तु तत्सख्यो मत्पूजायै तदीरिताः । मादृशो न च गृह्णंति परहस्तकृतं बलिम्

samāgatāstu tatsakhyo matpūjāyai tadīritāḥ mādṛśo na ca gṛhṇaṁti parahastakṛtaṁ balim

‘Her friends came, instructed by her, for my worship; but ones such as me do not accept an offering made through another's hand.’

Verse 92 (padma.6.201.92)

तत्पतिश्चेत्समायास्यदभविष्यत्तदा शिवम् । तस्यास्तु मदवज्ञातो गर्भपातो भविष्यति

tatpatiścetsamāyāsyadabhaviṣyattadā śivam tasyāstu madavajñāto garbhapāto bhaviṣyati

‘Had her husband himself come instead, then all would have been well; but, through what appears as my disregard of her, a miscarriage shall occur.’

Verse 93 (padma.6.201.93)

यद्व्रतं पूजनं यच्च कर्तुं न क्षमतेंगना । तत्कारयति नाथेन न भंगः स्यात्तयोःसखि

yadvrataṁ pūjanaṁ yacca kartuṁ na kṣamateṁganā tatkārayati nāthena na bhaṁgaḥ syāttayoḥsakhi

‘Whatever vow or worship a woman is unable to perform herself, she should have her husband perform it; then there is no breach of the vow between the two, O friend.’

Verse 94 (padma.6.201.94)

अथवा विप्रमुख्येन पृष्ट्वा पतिमनन्यधीः । यतः स्वयमनागत्य तत्कृतं मे तयार्चनम्

athavā vipramukhyena pṛṣṭvā patimananyadhīḥ yataḥ svayamanāgatya tatkṛtaṁ me tayārcanam

‘Or else, having consulted with a foremost brahmin, her mind fixed on her husband alone — since she herself did not come, her worship of me, performed thus—’

Verse 95 (padma.6.201.95)

न कारितं च भर्त्रातो भविता दोहदोऽफलः । यद्युभौ तौ समागत्य दंपती श्रद्धया पुनः

na kāritaṁ ca bhartrāto bhavitā dohado'phalaḥ yadyubhau tau samāgatya daṁpatī śraddhayā punaḥ

‘—was not carried out through her husband either; therefore her pregnancy-craving shall go unfulfilled. But if both together, husband and wife, come again with faith—’

Verse 96 (padma.6.201.96)

मां पूजयिष्यतः पुत्रो भविष्यति तदा तयोः । देवल उवाच- सशापो न त्वया वैश्य न चैव तव भार्यया

māṁ pūjayiṣyataḥ putro bhaviṣyati tadā tayoḥ devala uvāca- saśāpo na tvayā vaiśya na caiva tava bhāryayā

‘—and worship me, then a son shall be born to them.’ Devala said: ‘No curse has been placed by you, O merchant, nor by your wife—’

Verse 97 (padma.6.201.97)

श्रुतः सखीभिरस्या नो प्रसादश्च तयार्पितः । तयोरज्ञानतो वैश्य युवयोर्नाभवत्सुतः

śrutaḥ sakhībhirasyā no prasādaśca tayārpitaḥ tayorajñānato vaiśya yuvayornābhavatsutaḥ

‘—this explanation was heard from her friends, but the compensating grace was not conferred upon her. Because of the two of you being unaware of this, O merchant, no son was born to you.’

Verse 98 (padma.6.201.98)

अजानतो प्रतिविधिं परत्रात्र सुखप्रदम् । एतत्ते कथितं वैश्य संतानाभावकारणम्

ajānato pratividhiṁ paratrātra sukhapradam etatte kathitaṁ vaiśya saṁtānābhāvakāraṇam

‘Being unaware of the remedy that would have brought happiness in the other life as well as this — this is the reason for your lack of offspring, O merchant, which I have told you.’

Verse 99 (padma.6.201.99)

वसिष्ठेन यथापूर्वं दिलीपस्य महीपतेः । तच्छ्रुत्वा स यथा राजा नंदिनीं समतोषयत्

vasiṣṭhena yathāpūrvaṁ dilīpasya mahīpateḥ tacchrutvā sa yathā rājā naṁdinīṁ samatoṣayat

‘Just as Vasishtha formerly told King Dilipa, and, hearing it, that king satisfied the cow Nandini—’

Verse 100 (padma.6.201.100)

सस्त्रीकस्त्वं तथा वैश्य गौरिं तोषय कामदाम् । सा यथाराधिता राज्ञे दिलीपाय ददौ सुतम्

sastrīkastvaṁ tathā vaiśya gauriṁ toṣaya kāmadām sā yathārādhitā rājñe dilīpāya dadau sutam

‘—so should you too, O merchant, together with your wife, satisfy Gauri, the giver of desires. Just as she, when worshipped, gave a son to King Dilipa—’

Verse 101 (padma.6.201.101)

आराधय तथा गौरीं त्वं सा तुभ्यं च दास्यति । वैश्य उवाच- दिलीप इति भूपः कः का च सा नंदिनी मुने

ārādhaya tathā gaurīṁ tvaṁ sā tubhyaṁ ca dāsyati vaiśya uvāca- dilīpa iti bhūpaḥ kaḥ kā ca sā naṁdinī mune

‘—worship Gauri in that same manner, and she shall grant you one as well.’ The merchant said: ‘Who was this king Dilipa, and who was that Nandini, O sage—’

Verse 102 (padma.6.201.102)

यामाराध्यसुतंलेभेसभूयोभूपसत्तमः । महेशादिसुरान्मुक्त्वा त्रिवर्णफलदायिनः

yāmārādhyasutaṁlebhesabhūyobhūpasattamaḥ maheśādisurānmuktvā trivarṇaphaladāyinaḥ

‘—worshipping whom that most excellent king obtained a son — she who, apart from Mahesha and the other gods, bestows the fruit of the three goals of life—’

Verse 103 (padma.6.201.103)

आराधिता कुतः सैव सुतार्थं तेन भूभुजा । एतत्सर्वं समाख्याहि मुने यत्पृष्टवानहम् । श्रुत्वा ततो गिरिसुतां सेविष्ये सह भार्यया

ārādhitā kutaḥ saiva sutārthaṁ tena bhūbhujā etatsarvaṁ samākhyāhi mune yatpṛṣṭavānaham śrutvā tato girisutāṁ seviṣye saha bhāryayā

‘—how was she worshipped by that king for the sake of a son? Tell me all of this, O sage, that I have asked; having heard it, I shall then serve the daughter of the mountain together with my wife.’

Verse 104 (padma.6.201.104)

शिवशर्मोवाच- गदितमिति निशम्य विष्णुशर्मन्विनययुतेन विशा मदीय पित्रा । मुनिरिति गदितुं दिलीपवृत्तं जगति पवित्रतरं विचक्रमे सः

śivaśarmovāca- gaditamiti niśamya viṣṇuśarmanvinayayutena viśā madīya pitrā muniriti gadituṁ dilīpavṛttaṁ jagati pavitrataraṁ vicakrame saḥ

Shivasharma said: O Vishnusharma, hearing this humbly spoken request of that merchant, my father, the sage then proceeded to tell that most sacred-in-all-the-world account of Dilipa.
