Shivasharma said: Once, at this great tirtha, seeing a milch-cow sunk in the mud, that noblest of rakshasas went in to pull her out.

Verse 2 (padma.6.205.2)

gorakṣaṇe mahāndharmo rakṣatuḥ svargatirbhavet ciṁtayanniti madhye tu sagṛhītoṁbuhastinā

Thinking, 'To protect a cow is a great dharma; its protector attains heaven' — even as he thought this, he was seized in the midst by the trunk of a water-elephant, a crocodile.

Verse 3 (padma.6.205.3)

At once he took on a divine form, and a celestial chariot too was brought near, sent by a troop of attendants dispatched by the gods headed by Indra.

Verse 5 (padma.6.205.5)

gacchanniti mayā pṛṣṭaḥ sa niśācarapuṁgavaḥ muktide'tra mahātīrthe mṛtyuṁ prāpya sadurlabhe

As he was thus departing, I asked that foremost of the rakshasas: 'Having found, in this liberation-granting great tirtha so hard to attain, your death—'

Verse 6 (padma.6.205.6)

kathaṁ devapadaprāptirjātā tava mahāmate ityukto māmuvācedaṁ vāṁchāsīdatra me'nagha
