Verse 1 (padma.6.206.1)

सौभरिरुवाच- धर्मराजशिबिः श्रीमानाकर्ण्य तद्वचो मुनेः । नारदस्याब्रवीत्प्रीतमना इति तमुत्तमम्

saubhariruvāca- dharmarājaśibiḥ śrīmānākarṇya tadvaco muneḥ nāradasyābravītprītamanā iti tamuttamam

Saubhari said: Hearing that word of the sage Narada, the illustrious and righteous King Shibi spoke thus, with a glad heart, to that most excellent sage.

Verse 2 (padma.6.206.2)

शिबिरुवाच- मुने तीर्थवरस्यास्य निगमोद्बोध कस्य ते । माहात्म्यं वर्णितं सम्यक्श्रुतं पापहरं मया

śibiruvāca- mune tīrthavarasyāsya nigamodbodha kasya te māhātmyaṁ varṇitaṁ samyakśrutaṁ pāpaharaṁ mayā

Shibi said: O sage, you have well described the glory of your excellent tirtha, Nigamodbodha, and I have heard it — sin-destroying as it is.

Verse 3 (padma.6.206.3)

इंद्रप्रस्थेत्र शतशः संति तीर्थानि वै मुने । अन्यस्यापि समाचक्ष्व माहात्म्यं यदि विद्यते

iṁdraprasthetra śataśaḥ saṁti tīrthāni vai mune anyasyāpi samācakṣva māhātmyaṁ yadi vidyate

'O sage, here at Indraprastha there are hundreds of tirthas indeed; tell me the glory of yet another, if you know one.'

Verse 4 (padma.6.206.4)

नारद उवाच- इंद्रप्रस्थांतरावर्तिन्येषा या द्वारका नृप । अस्यां पुरा हि यद्वृत्तं तत्ते वच्मि शृणुष्व मे

nārada uvāca- iṁdraprasthāṁtarāvartinyeṣā yā dvārakā nṛpa asyāṁ purā hi yadvṛttaṁ tatte vacmi śṛṇuṣva me

Narada said: 'O king, within Indraprastha lies this place called Dvaraka — what happened here in ancient times, I shall now tell you; listen.'

Verse 5 (padma.6.206.5)

काम्पिल्येऽथ द्विजः कश्चित् पुष्पेषुर्मूर्तिमानिव । सर्वासां योषितां चित्तहारी स्यादग्रविभ्रमैः

kāmpilye'tha dvijaḥ kaścit puṣpeṣurmūrtimāniva sarvāsāṁ yoṣitāṁ cittahārī syādagravibhramaiḥ

'In the city of Kampilya there lived a certain brahmin, as though Kama, the flower-arrowed god, in bodily form — he stole the hearts of every woman with but the first flash of his beguiling charm.'

Verse 6 (padma.6.206.6)

संगीतविद्याकुशलः कोकिलामधुरध्वनिः । एकदा स करे वीणां धारयन्वादयन्मुहुः

saṁgītavidyākuśalaḥ kokilāmadhuradhvaniḥ ekadā sa kare vīṇāṁ dhārayanvādayanmuhuḥ

'Skilled in the art of music, his voice as sweet as the koel's — once, holding a vina in his hand and playing it again and again—'

Verse 7 (padma.6.206.7)

कंठेन कोकिलालाप मधुरेण नराधिप । गायन्बभ्राम नगरे प्रतिरथ्यं महामतिः

kaṁṭhena kokilālāpa madhureṇa narādhipa gāyanbabhrāma nagare pratirathyaṁ mahāmatiḥ

'—O lord of men, that man of great intellect roamed the city, street after street, singing in a voice as sweet as the koel's own warbling.'

Verse 8 (padma.6.206.8)

तस्य गीतिध्वनिं श्रुत्वा मूर्छनातानसंयुतम् । त्वक्त्वा स्वगृहकार्याणि तमीयुः पौरयोषितः

tasya gītidhvaniṁ śrutvā mūrchanātānasaṁyutam tvaktvā svagṛhakāryāṇi tamīyuḥ paurayoṣitaḥ

'Hearing the sound of his singing, rich with musical ornamentation and melodic runs, the women of the city left their household duties and came to him.'

Verse 9 (padma.6.206.9)

मोहितास्तस्य रूपेण कामवेगं न सेहिरे । जाता स्खलितवीर्यास्ता गीतं श्रुत्वा समक्षतः

mohitāstasya rūpeṇa kāmavegaṁ na sehire jātā skhalitavīryāstā gītaṁ śrutvā samakṣataḥ

'Enchanted by his beauty, they could not withstand the force of desire; hearing his song before them, they lost all self-possession.'

Verse 10 (padma.6.206.10)

ब्रह्मणो मानसं येन लोभितं भारतीं प्रति । शिवस्यार्द्धशरीरं च पार्वत्यै येन दापितम्

brahmaṇo mānasaṁ yena lobhitaṁ bhāratīṁ prati śivasyārddhaśarīraṁ ca pārvatyai yena dāpitam

'—he, Kama, by whom Brahma's own mind was made to covet Bharati, and by whom even half of Shiva's body was made to be given over to Parvati—'

Verse 11 (padma.6.206.11)

ताभ्यामन्यो जनो लोके वशी वा ज्ञानवानपि । यः स्मरं तं क्षमो जेतुं स्त्रियः प्रकृतिचंचलाः

tābhyāmanyo jano loke vaśī vā jñānavānapi yaḥ smaraṁ taṁ kṣamo jetuṁ striyaḥ prakṛticaṁcalāḥ

'Besides those two, what person in this world — however self-controlled or wise — is able to conquer that Kama? What then of women, fickle by their very nature?'

Verse 12 (padma.6.206.12)

ताः स्मरावेशमासोढुं न साध्योपि विषेहिरे । वक्तव्यमिति किं राजन्लोके कामो हि दुर्जयः

tāḥ smarāveśamāsoḍhuṁ na sādhyopi viṣehire vaktavyamiti kiṁ rājanloke kāmo hi durjayaḥ

'They could not bear the onset of desire, difficult though it is even for the accomplished; what more is there to say, O king — in this world Kama is truly unconquerable.'

Verse 13 (padma.6.206.13)

अथ तास्तत्र तत्रेयुर्यत्र यत्र व्रजत्यसौ । प्रगायन्कंठवीणाभ्यां प्रगायन्स्वरमोहितः

atha tāstatra tatreyuryatra yatra vrajatyasau pragāyankaṁṭhavīṇābhyāṁ pragāyansvaramohitaḥ

'Then they went wherever he went, following that singer, enchanted by the melody of his voice and vina as he wandered, singing on and on.'

Verse 14 (padma.6.206.14)

तासां पतिसुतभ्रातृपितरोऽथ नराधिप । आगत्य भर्त्सयित्वा ता निन्युः स्वान्स्वान्गृहान्प्रति

tāsāṁ patisutabhrātṛpitaro'tha narādhipa āgatya bhartsayitvā tā ninyuḥ svānsvāngṛhānprati

'Then, O king, their husbands, sons, brothers, and fathers came and, scolding them, led them each back to their own homes.'

Verse 15 (padma.6.206.15)

तमन्विष्य पुनस्तास्तु जग्मुः सर्वास्तदंतिके । यदा तदा पौरजना वृत्तं तत्प्राहुरीश्वरे

tamanviṣya punastāstu jagmuḥ sarvāstadaṁtike yadā tadā paurajanā vṛttaṁ tatprāhurīśvare

'Yet again they sought him out, and all of them went to his side once more; when this happened, the townspeople reported the matter to the king.'

Verse 16 (padma.6.206.16)

राजापि तं समाहूय पप्रच्छ रहसि द्विजम् । केन मंत्रेण भो विप्र मोहितास्ताः पुरस्त्रियः

rājāpi taṁ samāhūya papraccha rahasi dvijam kena maṁtreṇa bho vipra mohitāstāḥ purastriyaḥ

'The king too summoned that brahmin and asked him in private: "By what charm, O brahmin, have you bewitched these women of the city?"'

Verse 17 (padma.6.206.17)

तन्ममाचक्ष्व विप्रेंद्र दास्यामि बहु ते धनम् । नोचेन्निष्कासयामि त्वां निजराज्यान्न संशयः

tanmamācakṣva vipreṁdra dāsyāmi bahu te dhanam nocenniṣkāsayāmi tvāṁ nijarājyānna saṁśayaḥ

'"Tell me this, O foremost of brahmins, and I shall give you much wealth. If not, I shall banish you from my kingdom without doubt."'

Verse 18 (padma.6.206.18)

नारद उवाच- श्रुत्वेति नृपतेर्वाक्यं नृपतिं स द्विजोत्तमः । उवाच सत्यं तस्याग्रे वचोरूपगुणार्णवः

nārada uvāca- śrutveti nṛpatervākyaṁ nṛpatiṁ sa dvijottamaḥ uvāca satyaṁ tasyāgre vacorūpaguṇārṇavaḥ

Narada said: 'Hearing the king's words, that foremost of brahmins — an ocean of virtue in both speech and form — spoke the truth before him.'

Verse 19 (padma.6.206.19)

द्विज उवाच- न मंत्रं नौषधं राजन्विद्यते मयि भिक्षुके । किंतु ते नगरे सर्वा योषितो ह्यजितेंद्रियाः

dvija uvāca- na maṁtraṁ nauṣadhaṁ rājanvidyate mayi bhikṣuke kiṁtu te nagare sarvā yoṣito hyajiteṁdriyāḥ

The brahmin said: 'O king, in me, a mere beggar, there is neither spell nor herb; it is simply that all the women of your city have not mastered their own senses.'

Verse 20 (padma.6.206.20)

रूपं मम समालोक्य श्रुत्वा गीतध्वनिं तथा । स्मरवेगं सहंते न राजंस्तव पुरे स्त्रियः

rūpaṁ mama samālokya śrutvā gītadhvaniṁ tathā smaravegaṁ sahaṁte na rājaṁstava pure striyaḥ

'Beholding my form, and hearing my song besides, the women of your city, O king, cannot bear the force of desire.'

Verse 21 (padma.6.206.21)

किं करोमि महाराज कोऽपराधोस्ति मे विभो । पुराकृतमिवोल्लंघ्यं शासनं न महीपते

kiṁ karomi mahārāja ko'parādhosti me vibho purākṛtamivollaṁghyaṁ śāsanaṁ na mahīpate

'What am I to do, great king? What offense of mine is this, my lord? O ruler of the earth, it is as though some decree laid down of old, that cannot be transgressed.'

Verse 22 (padma.6.206.22)

नारद उवाच- उशीनरशीबे राजन्नेवं कथयति द्विजे । सर्वे पौराः समेत्याथ प्रावदन्निति भूपतिम्

nārada uvāca- uśīnaraśībe rājannevaṁ kathayati dvije sarve paurāḥ sametyātha prāvadanniti bhūpatim

Narada said: 'O king, while the brahmin was speaking thus to Shibi, lord of the Ushinaras, all the townspeople gathered together and addressed the king in this way—'

Verse 23 (padma.6.206.23)

पौरा ऊचुः - राजन्ननेन विप्रेण मोहिताः पौरयोषितः । गृहेषु न हि तिष्ठंति ह्यस्माभिरनिवारिताः

paurā ūcuḥ - rājannanena vipreṇa mohitāḥ paurayoṣitaḥ gṛheṣu na hi tiṣṭhaṁti hyasmābhiranivāritāḥ

The townspeople said: 'O king, the women of the city have been bewitched by this brahmin; they no longer remain in their homes, and we cannot restrain them.'

Verse 24 (padma.6.206.24)

यद्ययं मोहनः स्त्रीणां नगरे वत्स्यति प्रभो । तदा देशांतराण्येव यास्यामो वयमद्य वै । गतोऽस्माकं वृषो देवो हव्यकव्यक्रियात्मकः

yadyayaṁ mohanaḥ strīṇāṁ nagare vatsyati prabho tadā deśāṁtarāṇyeva yāsyāmo vayamadya vai gato'smākaṁ vṛṣo devo havyakavyakriyātmakaḥ

'O lord, if this enchanter of women continues to dwell in the city, then this very day we shall depart for other lands. Our bull-god, who embodies the rites of offering to gods and ancestors, has already gone.'

Verse 25 (padma.6.206.25)

तमनुप्रस्थितात्क्षेत्राद्गौरियं पापिनामिव । विना तं शरणं यातं त्यक्तश्रीभिर्नरेश्वर

tamanuprasthitātkṣetrādgauriyaṁ pāpināmiva vinā taṁ śaraṇaṁ yātaṁ tyaktaśrībhirnareśvara

'O lord of men, and this land — like the fate of sinners — has, without him, gone seeking refuge, its prosperity now abandoned, following him from the field he left.'

Verse 26 (padma.6.206.26)

अथैनमनुयास्यंति वासिताभिर्वृषं यथा । शून्यालये कथं लक्ष्मीर्यत्नतोप्यवतिष्ठति

athainamanuyāsyaṁti vāsitābhirvṛṣaṁ yathā śūnyālaye kathaṁ lakṣmīryatnatopyavatiṣṭhati

'And then our women too will follow after him, as cows in heat follow a bull; for how can Fortune remain in an empty house, however hard one tries?'

Verse 27 (padma.6.206.27)

धर्मोऽर्थश्च गृहं चैतत् त्रयं स्त्रीवशगं यतः । कांताधर्म धनाधीना तयोर्नाशे न तिष्ठति

dharmo'rthaśca gṛhaṁ caitat trayaṁ strīvaśagaṁ yataḥ kāṁtādharma dhanādhīnā tayornāśe na tiṣṭhati

'For dharma, wealth, and the household — these three depend upon the wife; dharma and wealth rest upon her, and when they are lost, the household too cannot stand.'

Verse 28 (padma.6.206.28)

नारद उवाच- एवं वदत्सु पौरेषु स्त्रियस्तेषां समागताः । राजांतिक उपाविष्टा इत्यूचुस्ताः परस्परम्

nārada uvāca- evaṁ vadatsu paureṣu striyasteṣāṁ samāgatāḥ rājāṁtika upāviṣṭā ityūcustāḥ parasparam

Narada said: 'While the townsmen were speaking thus, their own women, having gathered and seated themselves near the king, said to one another—'

Verse 29 (padma.6.206.29)

पौरस्त्रिय ऊचुः । कामं वामाकृतिं विप्रमेनं प्राप्यमनांसि नः । उल्लसंति दिवाधीशं कमलानीव वारिणि

paurastriya ūcuḥ kāmaṁ vāmākṛtiṁ vipramenaṁ prāpyamanāṁsi naḥ ullasaṁti divādhīśaṁ kamalānīva vāriṇi

The city-women said: 'Truly, having found this brahmin of such lovely form, our hearts blossom, as lotuses in the water blossom at the sight of the lord of day.'

Verse 30 (padma.6.206.30)

संकुचंति विना तेन कुमुदानि यथेंदुना । आगच्छंतमिलित्वैनंधारयामोनृपाग्रतः

saṁkucaṁti vinā tena kumudāni yatheṁdunā āgacchaṁtamilitvainaṁdhārayāmonṛpāgrataḥ

'—as water-lilies wither without the moon. Let us go and meet him as he arrives, and hold him here, before the very eyes of the king.'

Verse 31 (padma.6.206.31)

अवध्योऽयं वयं चास्य किं करिष्यति भूपतिः । नारद उवाच- इत्युक्त्वा तास्त्वरावत्यो जगृहुस्तं द्विजोत्तमम्

avadhyo'yaṁ vayaṁ cāsya kiṁ kariṣyati bhūpatiḥ nārada uvāca- ityuktvā tāstvarāvatyo jagṛhustaṁ dvijottamam

'He cannot be put to death, and we belong to him — what can the king do?' Narada said: 'Having said this, they hastily laid hold of that foremost brahmin.'

Verse 32 (padma.6.206.32)

पश्यतां निजभर्तॄणां राज्ञश्चैव पुरस्तदा । ऊचुश्चैनं मनोनाथ गृहानागच्छ हृच्छयम्

paśyatāṁ nijabhartṝṇāṁ rājñaścaiva purastadā ūcuścainaṁ manonātha gṛhānāgaccha hṛcchayam

'Then, before the eyes of their own husbands and of the king himself, they said to him: "O lord of our hearts, come to our homes, you who dwell within our very desire—"'

Verse 33 (padma.6.206.33)

शमयाशु विनाद्यत्वां स्थातुं नैव च शक्नुमः । इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तासां स विप्रः प्रत्युवाच ह

śamayāśu vinādyatvāṁ sthātuṁ naiva ca śaknumaḥ ityākarṇya vacastāsāṁ sa vipraḥ pratyuvāca ha

'"—quickly soothe it; without you, we simply cannot bear to remain today." Hearing their words, the brahmin replied.'

Verse 34 (padma.6.206.34)

विप्र उवाच- भवतीनामहं पुत्रो भवत्यो मातरो मम । गृहान्किमर्थमुत्सृज्य भवत्यः पर्यटंति हि

vipra uvāca- bhavatīnāmahaṁ putro bhavatyo mātaro mama gṛhānkimarthamutsṛjya bhavatyaḥ paryaṭaṁti hi

The brahmin said: 'I am a son to all of you, and you are mothers to me; why then have you left your homes to wander about?'

Verse 35 (padma.6.206.35)

आराधयत नाथान्स्वान्यतो लोकद्वयं ध्रुवम् । आराधितेषु पतिषु विष्णुः सर्वसुरेश्वरः

ārādhayata nāthānsvānyato lokadvayaṁ dhruvam ārādhiteṣu patiṣu viṣṇuḥ sarvasureśvaraḥ

'Worship your own husbands, your true lords, for by this both worlds are surely attained. When husbands are duly honored, Vishnu, the lord of all the gods—'

Verse 36 (padma.6.206.36)

प्रसन्नो भवति त्वत्र प्रसन्ने किमु दुर्लभम् । या स्त्री स्वपतिमुत्सृज्य सेवतेऽन्यसुखेच्छया

prasanno bhavati tvatra prasanne kimu durlabham yā strī svapatimutsṛjya sevate'nyasukhecchayā

'—is truly pleased with you; and when he is pleased, what remains hard to attain? The woman who abandons her own husband and, desiring pleasure elsewhere, serves another man—'

Verse 37 (padma.6.206.37)

सापवादमवाप्नोति याति घोरां च दुर्गतिम् । उषित्वा तत्र कल्पांते यावत्सा पतिवंचना

sāpavādamavāpnoti yāti ghorāṁ ca durgatim uṣitvā tatra kalpāṁte yāvatsā pativaṁcanā

'—incurs disgrace and falls into a dreadful evil state; she dwells there until the end of a kalpa, in proportion to her betrayal of her husband.'

Verse 38 (padma.6.206.38)

पुनस्तस्माद्विनिर्गत्य स्थावरत्वं प्रपद्यते । तस्मादपि पशुत्वं सा लभते बहुजन्मसु

punastasmādvinirgatya sthāvaratvaṁ prapadyate tasmādapi paśutvaṁ sā labhate bahujanmasu

'Then, emerging from there, she takes birth as an immobile being, a plant; and from that state too she obtains the condition of an animal, through many births.'

Verse 39 (padma.6.206.39)

ततो मुक्ता मनुष्यत्वे व्यंगा भवति तत्र सा । एवं पापगतिं ज्ञात्वा निवर्तध्वमतो जनात्

tato muktā manuṣyatve vyaṁgā bhavati tatra sā evaṁ pāpagatiṁ jñātvā nivartadhvamato janāt

'Then, freed from that, she is born maimed even in the human state. Knowing thus the fate that sin brings, turn back, therefore, from this man.'

Verse 40 (padma.6.206.40)

नो वा यास्यथ देहांते नरकं भृशदारुणम् । यदिच्छंति भवंत्यो मे सुखं तन्नेह लप्स्यथ । पापमेव हि युष्माकं यतोधःपतनं नृणाम्

no vā yāsyatha dehāṁte narakaṁ bhṛśadāruṇam yadicchaṁti bhavaṁtyo me sukhaṁ tanneha lapsyatha pāpameva hi yuṣmākaṁ yatodhaḥpatanaṁ nṛṇām

'Or else, at the end of this body, you shall go to a most terrible hell. Whatever pleasure you desire of me, that you shall not obtain here; for it is sin alone that brings about the downfall of human beings.'

Verse 41 (padma.6.206.41)

नारद उवाच- श्रुत्वैवं वचनं तस्य दृष्ट्वा भर्तृसुखानि च । लज्जयानम्र मुख्यस्ता लतावातहता इव

nārada uvāca- śrutvaivaṁ vacanaṁ tasya dṛṣṭvā bhartṛsukhāni ca lajjayānamra mukhyastā latāvātahatā iva

Narada said: 'Hearing his words, and calling to mind the joys of their husbands, those foremost women bowed their heads in shame, like creepers struck down by the wind.'

Verse 42 (padma.6.206.42)

तासां तु पुरनारीणां स्मराग्निर्भृशदारुणः । शशाम तस्य शीतेन बटोर्वचनवारिणा

tāsāṁ tu puranārīṇāṁ smarāgnirbhṛśadāruṇaḥ śaśāma tasya śītena baṭorvacanavāriṇā

'The fierce fire of passion in those women of the city was extinguished by the cooling water of that young brahmin's words.'

Verse 43 (padma.6.206.43)

उत्थाय चेलुः सर्वास्ता विनिंदंत्य इति स्मरम् । ब्रह्मशक्रादिदेवानामपि मोहकरं नृप

utthāya celuḥ sarvāstā viniṁdaṁtya iti smaram brahmaśakrādidevānāmapi mohakaraṁ nṛpa

'Rising up, O king, all of them departed, condemning Kama as they went — that same Kama who bewilders even Brahma, Indra, and the other gods.'

Verse 44 (padma.6.206.44)

स्त्रिय ऊचुः । धिगिमं पापकर्माणं शीलदारुकुठारकम् । कामवामदृशां प्रीत्यै धन्यो येन हतः स्मरः

striya ūcuḥ dhigimaṁ pāpakarmāṇaṁ śīladārukuṭhārakam kāmavāmadṛśāṁ prītyai dhanyo yena hataḥ smaraḥ

The women said: 'Shame on this sinful one, the axe upon the timber of virtue! Blessed is he by whom Kama has been slain, for the true good of women whose eyes desire had clouded.'

Verse 45 (padma.6.206.45)

किं वदेम जगत्पूज्यां रुक्मिणीं जठरे यया । धृतः प्रद्युम्ननाम्नाऽसौ राहुः स्त्रीशीलचंद्रभुक्

kiṁ vadema jagatpūjyāṁ rukmiṇīṁ jaṭhare yayā dhṛtaḥ pradyumnanāmnā'sau rāhuḥ strīśīlacaṁdrabhuk

'What shall we say of world-honored Rukmini, in whose womb was carried that one named Pradyumna — himself a very Rahu, devourer of the moon that is women's virtue?'

Verse 46 (padma.6.206.46)

स देवाधम आयाति यदि नो दृष्टगोचरम् । भूयो ध्यानकृतेशान दृगग्नौ तं क्षिपामहे

sa devādhama āyāti yadi no dṛṣṭagocaram bhūyo dhyānakṛteśāna dṛgagnau taṁ kṣipāmahe

'If that basest of gods ever comes within our sight again, O lord, we shall cast him into the fire of our eyes, kindled by meditation.'

Verse 47 (padma.6.206.47)

येनायं जनितः पापो ह्यात्मारामेण विष्णुना । कृतः षोडशसाहस्रस्त्रीप्रियः का हि नः कथा

yenāyaṁ janitaḥ pāpo hyātmārāmeṇa viṣṇunā kṛtaḥ ṣoḍaśasāhasrastrīpriyaḥ kā hi naḥ kathā

'He who was born of Vishnu, the self-delighting one, was made beloved of sixteen thousand women himself — what then is our own story worth telling?'

Verse 48 (padma.6.206.48)

एवं विनिंद्य तं कामं तुष्टुवुस्तं द्विजोत्तमम् । शीलं स्वस्य च तासां च रक्षितं येन भूपते

evaṁ viniṁdya taṁ kāmaṁ tuṣṭuvustaṁ dvijottamam śīlaṁ svasya ca tāsāṁ ca rakṣitaṁ yena bhūpate

'Having thus condemned Kama, O king, they praised that foremost of brahmins, by whom their own virtue and the virtue of them all had been safeguarded.'

Verse 49 (padma.6.206.49)

धन्या सामुष्य जननी ययायं ब्राह्मणोत्तमः । स्मरजिन्निर्मितो लोके परधर्मस्य रक्षकः

dhanyā sāmuṣya jananī yayāyaṁ brāhmaṇottamaḥ smarajinnirmito loke paradharmasya rakṣakaḥ

'Blessed indeed is the mother who bore this foremost of brahmins into the world — a conqueror of Kama, and a guardian of the sacred duty of others.'

Verse 50 (padma.6.206.50)

धिगस्तु नो राजलोकैर्हसिताः स्मरनिर्जिताः । याभिर्वाक्यमनोभ्यां च जनितं पापमुल्बणम्

dhigastu no rājalokairhasitāḥ smaranirjitāḥ yābhirvākyamanobhyāṁ ca janitaṁ pāpamulbaṇam

'Shame on us, who have become a laughingstock before the king and his people, conquered by Kama — we, by whose word and thought such grievous sin was born.'

Verse 51 (padma.6.206.51)

नारद उवाच- एवं विचिंतयंत्यस्ता एक्यमत्ययुताः स्त्रियः । जग्मुः स्वंस्वं गृहं सर्वा द्विजवाक्येन बोधिताः

nārada uvāca- evaṁ viciṁtayaṁtyastā ekyamatyayutāḥ striyaḥ jagmuḥ svaṁsvaṁ gṛhaṁ sarvā dvijavākyena bodhitāḥ

Narada said: 'Thus reflecting, and released now from that shared delusion, all those women, enlightened by the brahmin's words, went each to her own home.'

Verse 52 (padma.6.206.52)

अथ राजापि कांपिल्यस्तं द्विजं वस्त्रभूषणैः । संपूज्य प्रेषयामास सद्गृहे संयतेंद्रियम्

atha rājāpi kāṁpilyastaṁ dvijaṁ vastrabhūṣaṇaiḥ saṁpūjya preṣayāmāsa sadgṛhe saṁyateṁdriyam

'Then the king of Kampilya too honored that self-controlled brahmin with garments and ornaments, and sent him on his way to a worthy household.'

Verse 53 (padma.6.206.53)

अथागच्छति काले तु कारूषाधिपतिर्बली । कांपिल्याधिपतिं सैन्यैर्नगरं रुरुधे तदा

athāgacchati kāle tu kārūṣādhipatirbalī kāṁpilyādhipatiṁ sainyairnagaraṁ rurudhe tadā

'Then, in time, the mighty king of Karusha came with his armies and laid siege to the city of the lord of Kampilya.'

Verse 54 (padma.6.206.54)

तयोर्युद्धमभूद्घोरं तेन युद्धे स घातितः । नगरं लुठितं सर्वं हताः शूराश्च सर्वशः

tayoryuddhamabhūdghoraṁ tena yuddhe sa ghātitaḥ nagaraṁ luṭhitaṁ sarvaṁ hatāḥ śūrāśca sarvaśaḥ

'A terrible battle was fought between the two, in which he, the king of Kampilya, was slain; the whole city was plundered, and every warrior in it was killed.'

Verse 55 (padma.6.206.55)

ता स्त्रियः कालकूटं तु खादित्वा मरणं गताः । प्रायश्चित्तं तु न कृतं ताभिः पापस्य तस्य तु

tā striyaḥ kālakūṭaṁ tu khāditvā maraṇaṁ gatāḥ prāyaścittaṁ tu na kṛtaṁ tābhiḥ pāpasya tasya tu

'Those women, eating kalakuta poison, met their deaths; but they had never performed penance for that sin of theirs.'

Verse 56 (padma.6.206.56)

येन पापेन ताः सर्वा भीषणाख्यस्य रक्षसः । राक्षस्यो नगरे जाता महाकाया भयानकाः

yena pāpena tāḥ sarvā bhīṣaṇākhyasya rakṣasaḥ rākṣasyo nagare jātā mahākāyā bhayānakāḥ

'By that sin, all of them were reborn in the city as rakshasis of the kind of the rakshasa named Bhishana — huge in body and terrible to behold.'

Verse 57 (padma.6.206.57)

तत्र ता निहिताः सर्वाः पुरनार्यो हनूमता । यज्ञांश्च रसतो जिष्णोस्तिष्ठतां रथकेतने

tatra tā nihitāḥ sarvāḥ puranāryo hanūmatā yajñāṁśca rasato jiṣṇostiṣṭhatāṁ rathaketane

'There, all those women-turned-rakshasis were slain by Hanuman — the very Hanuman who dwells upon the banner of Jishnu's (Arjuna's) chariot, guarding the sacrifices.'

Verse 58 (padma.6.206.58)

पुनस्ता एव राक्षस्यो बभूवुर्मारवेध्वनि । क्षुधार्ताश्च तृषार्ताश्च दर्शनेन भयप्रदाः

punastā eva rākṣasyo babhūvurmāravedhvani kṣudhārtāśca tṛṣārtāśca darśanena bhayapradāḥ

'Those same women became rakshasis once more, in the desert wilds of Maruvedhvani, tormented by hunger and thirst, dreadful even to look upon.'

Verse 59 (padma.6.206.59)

एवं तेन तु पापेन वाङ्मनोविहितेन तु । ताभिर्जन्मद्वयं प्राप्तं राक्षसीयोनिमिश्रितम्

evaṁ tena tu pāpena vāṅmanovihitena tu tābhirjanmadvayaṁ prāptaṁ rākṣasīyonimiśritam

'Thus, by that sin committed through speech and thought, they obtained two births each mingled with a rakshasi's womb.'

Verse 60 (padma.6.206.60)

पापेन नाशितं तासां स नृपं नगरद्वयम् । अतएव न कर्त्तव्यं परकांतनिषेवणम्

pāpena nāśitaṁ tāsāṁ sa nṛpaṁ nagaradvayam ataeva na karttavyaṁ parakāṁtaniṣevaṇam

'By that sin, their king and both cities were destroyed. Therefore, one should never devote oneself to another's spouse.'

Verse 61 (padma.6.206.61)

नारीभिः पापभीताभिर्वाङ्मनोभ्यामपि प्रभो । रोगी जडो दरिद्रो वा नेत्राभ्यां वर्जितोऽपि वा । न त्याज्यः स्वपतिः स्त्रीभिः इच्छंतीभिस्तु सद्गतिम्

nārībhiḥ pāpabhītābhirvāṅmanobhyāmapi prabho rogī jaḍo daridro vā netrābhyāṁ varjito'pi vā na tyājyaḥ svapatiḥ strībhiḥ icchaṁtībhistu sadgatim

'O lord, women who fear sin should avoid this even in speech and thought; whether her husband be diseased, dull-witted, poor, or even blind, a woman desiring a good end should never abandon her own husband.'

Verse 62 (padma.6.206.62)

कथितमिदं मया मनोवचोभ्यां जनितमघं च यदन्यकांतभक्त्या । फलमपि च यदेव लब्धमाभिस्तदपि शिबे बहुविस्तरेण तुभ्यम्

kathitamidaṁ mayā manovacobhyāṁ janitamaghaṁ ca yadanyakāṁtabhaktyā phalamapi ca yadeva labdhamābhistadapi śibe bahuvistareṇa tubhyam

'O Shiva, I have thus related to you at length this sin born of mind and speech, arising from devotion to another's spouse, and the very fruit these women obtained from it.'

Verse 63 (padma.6.206.63)

इंद्रप्रस्थगता न ये ममनघा या द्वारका दृश्यते तास्तस्या जलबिंदुदेहपतनात्पौरस्त्रियो रेभिरे । स्वर्गं चित्तवचोऽन्यकांत भजनाज्जातं विमुच्वोल्बणं क्रव्यादत्वमवाप्य देववनिताभावं सुराह्लाददम्

iṁdraprasthagatā na ye mamanaghā yā dvārakā dṛśyate tāstasyā jalabiṁdudehapatanātpaurastriyo rebhire svargaṁ cittavaco'nyakāṁta bhajanājjātaṁ vimucvolbaṇaṁ kravyādatvamavāpya devavanitābhāvaṁ surāhlādadam

'Here at Indraprastha, this sinless Dvaraka that is seen — by the mere fall of one drop of its water upon their bodies, those city-women cried out for release. Freed from that terrible flesh-eating rakshasi-state born of their mind and speech turned to another's spouse, they attained heaven, taking the form of celestial nymphs who delight the gods.'
