The Glory of Pushkara: Bharata's Confession

Verse 1 (padma.6.218.1)

नारद उवाच- भूयः शृणु महाभाग माहात्म्यं परमाद्भुतम् । अत्रस्थितस्य तीर्थस्य पुष्करस्य शिवप्रदम्

nārada uvāca- bhūyaḥ śṛṇu mahābhāga māhātmyaṁ paramādbhutam atrasthitasya tīrthasya puṣkarasya śivapradam

Narada said: 'O most fortunate one, hear further the most wondrous glory, granter of well-being, of the Pushkara tirtha situated here.'

Verse 2 (padma.6.218.2)

प्रसादात्तस्य तीर्थस्य विष्णुः सर्वसुरेश्वरः । प्रसन्नं पुंडरीकस्य मासमेकं गृहे वसेत् । अत्र मुक्तिं तदनुजो लेभे पापरतोऽपि हि

prasādāttasya tīrthasya viṣṇuḥ sarvasureśvaraḥ prasannaṁ puṁḍarīkasya māsamekaṁ gṛhe vaset atra muktiṁ tadanujo lebhe pāparato'pi hi

'By the grace of this tirtha, Vishnu, lord of all the gods, pleased, dwelt for a month in Pundarika's house; and here his sin-devoted younger brother too attained liberation.'

Verse 3 (padma.6.218.3)

शिबिरुवाच- कः पुंडरीको धर्मात्मा कृतं तेन च कर्म्म किम् । येन प्रसन्नो भगवांस्तद्गृहे मासमावसत्

śibiruvāca- kaḥ puṁḍarīko dharmātmā kṛtaṁ tena ca karmma kim yena prasanno bhagavāṁstadgṛhe māsamāvasat

Shibi said: 'Who was that righteous Pundarika, and what deed did he do, that the Lord, pleased, dwelt in his house for a whole month?'

Verse 4 (padma.6.218.4)

कथं तदनुजः प्राप पापात्मा श्रीहरेः पदम् । तीर्थस्यास्य प्रसादेन सर्वमाख्याहि मे मुने

kathaṁ tadanujaḥ prāpa pāpātmā śrīhareḥ padam tīrthasyāsya prasādena sarvamākhyāhi me mune

'How did his sinful-souled younger brother, by the grace of this tirtha, attain the supreme abode of Shri Hari? Tell me all this, O sage.'

Verse 5 (padma.6.218.5)

शृण्वतोऽस्य न संतोषो माहात्म्यं मम जायते

śṛṇvato'sya na saṁtoṣo māhātmyaṁ mama jāyate

'Even in hearing it, I find no satiety with this glory.'

Verse 6 (padma.6.218.6)

नारद उवाच- विदर्भनगरे राजन्मालवाख्ये महायशाः । ब्राह्मणो ब्रह्मविच्छांतो विद्वान्विष्णुपरायणः

nārada uvāca- vidarbhanagare rājanmālavākhye mahāyaśāḥ brāhmaṇo brahmavicchāṁto vidvānviṣṇuparāyaṇaḥ

Narada said: 'O king, in the land of Vidarbha, in a city named Malava, there lived a highly renowned brahmin, learned in Brahman, peaceful, wise, devoted to Vishnu.'

Verse 7 (padma.6.218.7)

देवर्षिपितृभूतानां मानुषाणां च पोषकः । विषयेषु न संसक्तो लोभमोहादिवर्जितः

devarṣipitṛbhūtānāṁ mānuṣāṇāṁ ca poṣakaḥ viṣayeṣu na saṁsakto lobhamohādivarjitaḥ

'He was a sustainer of gods, sages, ancestors, spirits, and men; unattached to sense-objects, and free from greed, delusion, and the like.'

Verse 8 (padma.6.218.8)

स एकदा महाभाग सिंहं प्राप्ते बृहस्पतौ । गोदावरीं महापुण्यां स्नातुं प्रतिजगाम ह

sa ekadā mahābhāga siṁhaṁ prāpte bṛhaspatau godāvarīṁ mahāpuṇyāṁ snātuṁ pratijagāma ha

'O most fortunate one, once, when Jupiter entered the sign of Leo, he set out to bathe in the greatly sacred Godavari.'

Verse 9 (padma.6.218.9)

दातुं तत्र सुवर्णस्य गृहान्निन्ये पलायुतम् । गच्छन्पथि स धर्मात्मा मनसैतदचिंतयत्

dātuṁ tatra suvarṇasya gṛhānninye palāyutam gacchanpathi sa dharmātmā manasaitadaciṁtayat

'To give in charity there, he took from home ten thousand palas of gold; going along the road, that righteous man thought this in his mind.'

Verse 10 (padma.6.218.10)

मालव उवाच- गृहाद्दानार्थमानीतं मया हेमपलायुतम् । यस्मै कस्मै न दातव्यं दातव्यं पूज्य साधवे

mālava uvāca- gṛhāddānārthamānītaṁ mayā hemapalāyutam yasmai kasmai na dātavyaṁ dātavyaṁ pūjya sādhave

Malava said: 'This ten thousand palas of gold, brought from home for the purpose of charity, should not be given to just anyone; it should be given only to some worshipful, virtuous person.'

Verse 11 (padma.6.218.11)

निष्किंचनाय विप्राय पात्रायानुपकारिणे । पूज्याय देशे काले च दत्तमक्षयतां व्रजेत्

niṣkiṁcanāya viprāya pātrāyānupakāriṇe pūjyāya deśe kāle ca dattamakṣayatāṁ vrajet

'A gift given to a possessionless, worthy, unrepaying, worshipful brahmin, at the right place and time, becomes imperishable.'

Verse 12 (padma.6.218.12)

उञ्छवृत्त्या समानीतं दत्त्वा दुर्वाससे मुनिः । शिलोंच्छवृत्तिर्धर्मात्मा स्वं त्यक्त्वा गात्परं पदम्

uñchavṛttyā samānītaṁ dattvā durvāsase muniḥ śiloṁcchavṛttirdharmātmā svaṁ tyaktvā gātparaṁ padam

'Having given wealth gathered by the gleaner's livelihood to the sage Durvasa, that righteous gleaner-liver, casting off his body, attained the supreme abode.'

Verse 13 (padma.6.218.13)

दानवेंद्रो बली राजा पात्रं विज्ञाय वामनम् । विपक्षायाप्यदात्तस्मै त्रिलोकीं स्वभुजार्जिताम्

dānaveṁdro balī rājā pātraṁ vijñāya vāmanam vipakṣāyāpyadāttasmai trilokīṁ svabhujārjitām

'The mighty king of the danavas, Bali, too, recognizing Vamana as a worthy recipient, gave him the three worlds won by his own arms, though he belonged to the opposing side.'

Verse 14 (padma.6.218.14)

तस्मात्पात्राय दातव्यं धनं धर्म्माजितं मया । गोविंदतुष्टये सम्यक्वांच्छनीयं न तत्फलम्

tasmātpātrāya dātavyaṁ dhanaṁ dharmmājitaṁ mayā goviṁdatuṣṭaye samyakvāṁcchanīyaṁ na tatphalam

'Therefore I too should give my own righteously-earned wealth only to a worthy recipient; its fruit is not something to be desired, merely for Govinda's satisfaction.'

Verse 15 (padma.6.218.15)

पुंडरीकस्तु धर्मात्मा भागिनेयो गजाह्वयात् । आयास्यति मयाहूतः सर्वपात्रशिरोमणिः

puṁḍarīkastu dharmātmā bhāgineyo gajāhvayāt āyāsyati mayāhūtaḥ sarvapātraśiromaṇiḥ

'The righteous Pundarika, my sister's son from Gajahvaya, foremost among all worthy recipients, shall come there when I call him.'

Verse 16 (padma.6.218.16)

आनीतस्य धनस्यार्द्धं तस्मै पात्राय सूनवे । स्वसुर्द्दास्यामि शेषं तु श्रोत्रियेभ्यो यथाविधि

ānītasya dhanasyārddhaṁ tasmai pātrāya sūnave svasurddāsyāmi śeṣaṁ tu śrotriyebhyo yathāvidhi

'Half of this wealth I have brought I shall give to that worthy nephew; the remainder I shall give, as is proper, to learned brahmins.'

Verse 17 (padma.6.218.17)

नारद उवाच- एवं विचिंत्य धर्मात्मा मालवं स द्विजोत्तमः । कतिचिद्वासरैः प्राप्तः पुण्यां गोदावरीं नृप

nārada uvāca- evaṁ viciṁtya dharmātmā mālavaṁ sa dvijottamaḥ katicidvāsaraiḥ prāptaḥ puṇyāṁ godāvarīṁ nṛpa

Narada said: 'O king, having thought thus, that righteous and excellent brahmin, the man of Malava, reached the sacred Godavari after just a few days.'

Verse 18 (padma.6.218.18)

मिलितस्तस्य धर्मात्मा पुंडरीकः स्वसुः सुतः । तस्य वै पूर्वमायातो मालवस्य महीपते

militastasya dharmātmā puṁḍarīkaḥ svasuḥ sutaḥ tasya vai pūrvamāyāto mālavasya mahīpate

'O king, there he met his righteous nephew Pundarika, who had already arrived there before that man of Malava.'

Verse 19 (padma.6.218.19)

स तत्र विधिना स्नात्वा सिंहसंक्रमवासरे । पुंडरीकाय वित्तार्द्धं ददौ मे प्रीयतां हरिः

sa tatra vidhinā snātvā siṁhasaṁkramavāsare puṁḍarīkāya vittārddhaṁ dadau me prīyatāṁ hariḥ

'Having duly bathed there on the day of the Leo transit, saying, "May Hari be pleased with me," he gave Pundarika half of his wealth.'

Verse 20 (padma.6.218.20)

पुंडरीकोऽपि धर्मात्मा स्नात्वा गोदावरीजले । स्ववित्तस्य चतुर्थांशं श्रोत्रियेभ्यो ददौ मुदा

puṁḍarīko'pi dharmātmā snātvā godāvarījale svavittasya caturthāṁśaṁ śrotriyebhyo dadau mudā

'The righteous Pundarika too, having bathed in the waters of the Godavari, joyfully gave a fourth part of his own wealth to learned brahmins.'

Verse 21 (padma.6.218.21)

स तत्र विधिवत्स्नात्त्वा दत्वा दानं च शक्तितः । गच्छंतं स्वगृहान्राजन्नित्युवाच स्वसुः सुतम्

sa tatra vidhivatsnāttvā datvā dānaṁ ca śaktitaḥ gacchaṁtaṁ svagṛhānrājannityuvāca svasuḥ sutam

'O king, having duly bathed there and given gifts according to his ability, as he was setting out for his own home, he said this to his sister's son.'

Verse 22 (padma.6.218.22)

मालव उवाच- गुरून्प्रति नमस्कारो वाच्यो आशीर्लघून्प्रति । यथावयोर्हि संयोगः क्षणिकोऽयं बभूव ह

mālava uvāca- gurūnprati namaskāro vācyo āśīrlaghūnprati yathāvayorhi saṁyogaḥ kṣaṇiko'yaṁ babhūva ha

Malava said: 'Salutation is to be spoken toward elders, blessing toward the young; just so has this union of ours proved to be but momentary.'

Verse 23 (padma.6.218.23)

एवं हि सर्वजंतूनां पुत्रदारादिभिः सह । तस्मात्क्षणिकसंयोगात्संसाराद्यः सुधीर्नरः

evaṁ hi sarvajaṁtūnāṁ putradārādibhiḥ saha tasmātkṣaṇikasaṁyogātsaṁsārādyaḥ sudhīrnaraḥ

'In just the same way, this union of all beings with sons, wives, and the rest is but momentary too; therefore, whatever wise man, from this world of momentary union—'

Verse 24 (padma.6.218.24)

विरज्येत कृपापात्रं स हरे स्याद्विनिश्चितम् । कृपातः श्रीहरेः प्राणी सत्संगमरतो भवेत्

virajyeta kṛpāpātraṁ sa hare syādviniścitam kṛpātaḥ śrīhareḥ prāṇī satsaṁgamarato bhavet

'—turns away in detachment, he alone surely becomes a vessel of Hari's grace; by Hari's grace alone does a being become devoted to the company of the good.'

Verse 25 (padma.6.218.25)

तस्तस्य हरेर्लीलाश्रवणेच्छा हि जायते । श्रुत्वा च कीर्तिता सद्भिर्हरिलीला अपि स्वयम्

tastasya harerlīlāśravaṇecchā hi jāyate śrutvā ca kīrtitā sadbhirharilīlā api svayam

'Then in him arises the desire to hear Hari's playful deeds; and having heard those very deeds of Hari, as praised by the good, he himself too—'

Verse 26 (padma.6.218.26)

सुस्पृहं कीर्त्तयत्येव ततः स्मरति केवलम् । ततस्तस्य भवेत्प्रेमगोविंदपदसेवने

suspṛhaṁ kīrttayatyeva tataḥ smarati kevalam tatastasya bhavetpremagoviṁdapadasevane

'—begins, with longing, to praise them himself, and then simply to remember them; then love for the service of Govinda's feet arises within him.'

Verse 27 (padma.6.218.27)

नरस्ततस्तरत्याशु पोतेनेव महार्णवम् । एतदर्थं हि साधूनां ज्ञानिनां कर्मणां तथा । यत्नो भवति धर्मात्मन्नपि त्वं यत्नवान्भव

narastatastaratyāśu poteneva mahārṇavam etadarthaṁ hi sādhūnāṁ jñānināṁ karmaṇāṁ tathā yatno bhavati dharmātmannapi tvaṁ yatnavānbhava

'Then that man swiftly crosses the great ocean of worldly existence, as though by a boat. For this very purpose do saints, the wise, and men devoted to right action make their effort, O righteous one; you too be diligent in this.'

Verse 28 (padma.6.218.28)

नारद उवाच- एवमुक्त्वा स वैदर्भः सुतं कथमपि स्वसुः । विसृज्याश्रुमुखो वाष्पपर्याकुलदृशं ययौ

nārada uvāca- evamuktvā sa vaidarbhaḥ sutaṁ kathamapi svasuḥ visṛjyāśrumukho vāṣpaparyākuladṛśaṁ yayau

Narada said: 'Having said this, that man of Vidarbha, somehow taking leave of his sister's son, his face streaming with tears, his eyes clouded with weeping, departed.'

Verse 29 (padma.6.218.29)

पुंडरीकोऽपि धर्मात्मा चचाल स्वगृहं प्रति । कतिभिर्वासरै राजन्नागतोऽत्र शुभास्पदे

puṁḍarīko'pi dharmātmā cacāla svagṛhaṁ prati katibhirvāsarai rājannāgato'tra śubhāspade

'The righteous Pundarika too set out toward his own home; O king, after a few days he arrived at this auspicious place.'

Verse 30 (padma.6.218.30)

भरताख्यं कनीयांसं भ्रातरं पतितं भुवि । श्वसंतं क्षतनिर्गच्छद्रुधिराक्तमवैक्षत

bharatākhyaṁ kanīyāṁsaṁ bhrātaraṁ patitaṁ bhuvi śvasaṁtaṁ kṣatanirgacchadrudhirāktamavaikṣata

'There he saw his younger brother, named Bharata, fallen on the ground, breathing still, drenched with blood flowing from his wounds.'

Verse 31 (padma.6.218.31)

पप्रच्छ च रुदन्नुर्च्च्भ्रातः केनेदृशीं दशाम् । गमितोसि किमर्थं वा गृहादिह समागतः

papraccha ca rudannurccbhrātaḥ kenedṛśīṁ daśām gamitosi kimarthaṁ vā gṛhādiha samāgataḥ

'Weeping aloud, he asked: "Brother, by whom have you been brought to such a state? And why have you come here from home?"'

Verse 32 (padma.6.218.32)

इति पृच्छति राजेंद्र पुंडरीके सपीडया । महत्या भरतः सद्यः पीडितोसूनमुंचत

iti pṛcchati rājeṁdra puṁḍarīke sapīḍayā mahatyā bharataḥ sadyaḥ pīḍitosūnamuṁcata

'O king of kings, even as Pundarika asked this, in the greatest anguish, Bharata, sorely afflicted, at once released his life-breath.'

Verse 33 (padma.6.218.33)

अवातरत्तदा यानमेकं सगणमद्भुतम् । आकाशात्पश्यतां भूप जनानां तद्गुरोरपि

avātarattadā yānamekaṁ sagaṇamadbhutam ākāśātpaśyatāṁ bhūpa janānāṁ tadgurorapi

'Then, O king, before the very eyes of the people and even of his own elder, a single wondrous celestial chariot, with its attendants, descended from the sky.'

Verse 34 (padma.6.218.34)

तदारुह्य स दिव्यांगो भरतः पापकार्यपि । उवाच वचनं ज्येष्ठं भ्रातरं विनमन्निदम्

tadāruhya sa divyāṁgo bharataḥ pāpakāryapi uvāca vacanaṁ jyeṣṭhaṁ bhrātaraṁ vinamannidam

'Mounting it, that Bharata, now of divine limbs, though he had been a doer of sinful deeds, bowing, spoke this word to his elder brother.'

Verse 35 (padma.6.218.35)

भरतोवाच- पुंडरीक महाबुद्धे तीर्थस्यास्य प्रसादतः । पुष्करस्य मया प्राप्ता पापिनापि दिवि स्थितिः

bharatovāca- puṁḍarīka mahābuddhe tīrthasyāsya prasādataḥ puṣkarasya mayā prāptā pāpināpi divi sthitiḥ

Bharata said: 'O highly wise Pundarika, by the grace of this Pushkara tirtha, even I, sinner though I was, have attained a place in heaven.'

Verse 36 (padma.6.218.36)

मदीयं दारुणं कर्म भ्रातर्जानासि यद्यपि । तथापि कथयाम्यद्य किंचिदज्ञातमस्ति ते

madīyaṁ dāruṇaṁ karma bhrātarjānāsi yadyapi tathāpi kathayāmyadya kiṁcidajñātamasti te

'Brother, though you know my terrible deeds, still I tell you today something that you do not yet know.'

Verse 37 (padma.6.218.37)

यथा मया प्रभावत्या वेश्यया रमितं सह । तद्गृहं व्ययितं भूरि धनं च मदिराकृते

yathā mayā prabhāvatyā veśyayā ramitaṁ saha tadgṛhaṁ vyayitaṁ bhūri dhanaṁ ca madirākṛte

'I consorted with a courtesan named Prabhavati; in her house, in a drunken state, I squandered much wealth.'

Verse 38 (padma.6.218.38)

द्यूतेन हारितं यच्च चौरकर्मसमार्जितम् । शिवरात्र्यां मया शंभुनिर्माल्यं यच्च भक्षितम्

dyūtena hāritaṁ yacca caurakarmasamārjitam śivarātryāṁ mayā śaṁbhunirmālyaṁ yacca bhakṣitam

'What I had gained by theft, I lost at gambling; on Shivaratri, I even ate Shambhu's own discarded offerings.'

Verse 39 (padma.6.218.39)

यत्कृते भवता विप्रो जेबुको नाम दूषितः । एतन्मया कृतं कर्म्म विदितं पुंडरीक ते

yatkṛte bhavatā vipro jebuko nāma dūṣitaḥ etanmayā kṛtaṁ karmma viditaṁ puṁḍarīka te

'That deed by which a brahmin named Jebuka was, through you, wrongly blamed — that too was done by me; this, O Pundarika, you already know.'

Verse 40 (padma.6.218.40)

गोदावरीं गते भ्रातस्त्वयि यत्कृतवानहं । न तत्ते विदितं कर्म कथयामि तदप्यहो

godāvarīṁ gate bhrātastvayi yatkṛtavānahaṁ na tatte viditaṁ karma kathayāmi tadapyaho

'Brother, what I did while you had gone to the Godavari — that deed is unknown to you; ah, that too I now tell you.'

Verse 41 (padma.6.218.41)

चलितेत्वय्यतिक्रांतोयदापक्षस्तदाह्यहम् । श्रुतवानिति लोकेभ्यो वचनं हरिदुःसहम्

calitetvayyatikrāṁtoyadāpakṣastadāhyaham śrutavāniti lokebhyo vacanaṁ hariduḥsaham

'When you had set out and passed beyond my reach, then I heard from people this word, unbearable to Hari—'

Verse 42 (padma.6.218.42)

पुंडरीको धनं दातुमाहूतो मातुलेन हि । निजसोदरमाहत्य पुंडरीकं तदा हृतम्

puṁḍarīko dhanaṁ dātumāhūto mātulena hi nijasodaramāhatya puṁḍarīkaṁ tadā hṛtam

'—that Pundarika had been summoned by our maternal uncle, to be given wealth. Then I thought: I shall strike down my own brother Pundarika, and seize that wealth.'

Verse 43 (padma.6.218.43)

गृहीष्यामि धनं भूरि मालवेन समर्पितम् । महता वसुना तेन तोषयामि प्रभावतीम्

gṛhīṣyāmi dhanaṁ bhūri mālavena samarpitam mahatā vasunā tena toṣayāmi prabhāvatīm

'"I shall take that abundant wealth given by Malava; with that great wealth I shall satisfy Prabhavati."'

Verse 44 (padma.6.218.44)

दुरोदरेण क्रीडामि स्वेच्छया तद्विदैः सह । इत्यालोच्य त्वदध्वानं निरुध्याहमिह स्थितः

durodareṇa krīḍāmi svecchayā tadvidaiḥ saha ityālocya tvadadhvānaṁ nirudhyāhamiha sthitaḥ

'"I shall gamble at dice at will, with those skilled in it" — thinking this, I stayed here, blocking your path.'

Verse 45 (padma.6.218.45)

हत्वा त्वां च धनं भूरि गृहीतुं च महामते । अतिक्रांते धने भ्रातः कुतश्चित्सार्थमागतः

hatvā tvāṁ ca dhanaṁ bhūri gṛhītuṁ ca mahāmate atikrāṁte dhane bhrātaḥ kutaścitsārthamāgataḥ

'O great-minded one, thinking to kill you and seize that abundant wealth — but, brother, even before that wealth of yours arrived, a caravan of merchants happened to arrive there from somewhere.'

Verse 46 (padma.6.218.46)

वणिजामत्र सुप्तोऽहं रात्रौ तत्र महामते । अथ कश्चिन्निशीथे तु तस्करो वणिजां धनम्

vaṇijāmatra supto'haṁ rātrau tatra mahāmate atha kaścinniśīthe tu taskaro vaṇijāṁ dhanam

'O great-minded one, I fell asleep that night in the midst of those very merchants. Then at midnight, some thief, intent on stealing the merchants' wealth—'

Verse 47 (padma.6.218.47)

हर्तुं तत्र समाविष्टः सार्थे जनसमाकुले । नीत्वा यदा धनं किंचित्स चौरस्तु पलायितः । तमन्वधावन्सहसा क्रोशंत इव सेवकाः

hartuṁ tatra samāviṣṭaḥ sārthe janasamākule nītvā yadā dhanaṁ kiṁcitsa caurastu palāyitaḥ tamanvadhāvansahasā krośaṁta iva sevakāḥ

'—entered that crowded caravan; and when that thief, having carried off some wealth, fled, the servants, shouting, at once ran after him.'

Verse 48 (padma.6.218.48)

सेवका ऊचुः । गृह्यतां गृह्यतामेष चौरोऽयं याति सत्वरम् । मध्याद्बहूनामस्माकमपहृत्य धनं बहु

sevakā ūcuḥ gṛhyatāṁ gṛhyatāmeṣa cauro'yaṁ yāti satvaram madhyādbahūnāmasmākamapahṛtya dhanaṁ bahu

The servants said: 'Catch him, catch him! This thief is fleeing swiftly, having stolen much wealth from the midst of many of us!'

Verse 49 (padma.6.218.49)

भरत उवाच- इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तेषां पुरतस्तु तमन्वहम् । अधावं सहसा भ्रातस्तद्गृहीतुं जिहीर्षया

bharata uvāca- ityākarṇya vacasteṣāṁ puratastu tamanvaham adhāvaṁ sahasā bhrātastadgṛhītuṁ jihīrṣayā

Bharata said: 'Hearing their words, brother, I too, wishing to catch him myself, at once ran after him, ahead of them.'

Verse 50 (padma.6.218.50)

ततस्ते वणिजां भृत्या ज्ञात्वा मां तस्य रक्षकम् । प्रजहुस्तरसा सर्वे सखड्गं खड्गपाणयः

tataste vaṇijāṁ bhṛtyā jñātvā māṁ tasya rakṣakam prajahustarasā sarve sakhaḍgaṁ khaḍgapāṇayaḥ

'Then those merchants' servants, taking me for that thief's protector, all together, swords in hand, at once struck at me.'

Verse 51 (padma.6.218.51)

तेषु कश्चिद्द्विजश्रेष्ठो ब्राह्मणोऽहमिति ब्रुवन् । खड्गेन शितधारेण मया पापीयसा हतः

teṣu kaściddvijaśreṣṭho brāhmaṇo'hamiti bruvan khaḍgena śitadhāreṇa mayā pāpīyasā hataḥ

'Among them, a certain foremost brahmin, even as he cried, "I am a brahmin!", was slain by my own most sinful hand, with a sharp-edged sword.'

Verse 52 (padma.6.218.52)

वणिजां सेवकैस्तैस्तु खड्गधारैरहं हतः । गतास्ते वणिजः प्रातर्निजगंतव्यनीवृतम्

vaṇijāṁ sevakaistaistu khaḍgadhārairahaṁ hataḥ gatāste vaṇijaḥ prātarnijagaṁtavyanīvṛtam

'Then, by those very sword-wielding servants of the merchants, I was struck down. Those merchants went on, in the morning, upon their own intended path.'

Verse 53 (padma.6.218.53)

ततो भवानिह प्राप्तः श्वसंतं मां ददर्श ह । चलद्रुधिरलिप्तांगं पीडामोहविचेतनम्

tato bhavāniha prāptaḥ śvasaṁtaṁ māṁ dadarśa ha caladrudhiraliptāṁgaṁ pīḍāmohavicetanam

'Then you arrived here, and found me still breathing, my limbs smeared with flowing blood, unconscious with pain and confusion.'

Verse 54 (padma.6.218.54)

इत्येतत्कथितं भ्रातर्यदर्थमहमागतः । अपमृत्युं यथा प्राप्तस्तच्चापि कथितं मया

ityetatkathitaṁ bhrātaryadarthamahamāgataḥ apamṛtyuṁ yathā prāptastaccāpi kathitaṁ mayā

'Brother, all this I have now told you — the reason I came here, and how I met my untimely death — that too I have told you.'
