Verse 1 (padma.6.219.1)

नारद उवाच- इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य पुंडरीको महामनाः । उवाच निजबंधुं तं शृण्वतां निजसंगिनाम्

nārada uvāca- ityākarṇya vacastasya puṁḍarīko mahāmanāḥ uvāca nijabaṁdhuṁ taṁ śṛṇvatāṁ nijasaṁginām

Narada said: 'Hearing his words, the great-minded Pundarika, in the hearing of his own companions, said this to his brother.'

Verse 2 (padma.6.219.2)

पुंडरीक उवाच- केन पुण्येन तीर्थेऽस्मिन्मृत्युर्भरत तेऽभवत् । यदि जानासि तद्ब्रूहि पापं विख्यातमेव ते

puṁḍarīka uvāca- kena puṇyena tīrthe'sminmṛtyurbharata te'bhavat yadi jānāsi tadbrūhi pāpaṁ vikhyātameva te

Pundarika said: 'By what merit, Bharata, did your death come to pass at this tirtha? If you know, tell me — your sin, indeed, is well known.'

Verse 3 (padma.6.219.3)

भरत उवाच- पुंडरीक शृणुष्वेदं कथयामि तवाग्रतः । एतत्तीर्थप्रदं पुण्यं कृतं यदिह जन्मनि

bharata uvāca- puṁḍarīka śṛṇuṣvedaṁ kathayāmi tavāgrataḥ etattīrthapradaṁ puṇyaṁ kṛtaṁ yadiha janmani

Bharata said: 'Hear, Pundarika, I shall tell you — the merit I performed in this life, which granted me this tirtha.'

Verse 4 (padma.6.219.4)

एकदा तु धनं जित्वा समागच्छन्निजं गृहम् । अपश्यं मृतकं बालं मृतस्यानाथमापणे

ekadā tu dhanaṁ jitvā samāgacchannijaṁ gṛham apaśyaṁ mṛtakaṁ bālaṁ mṛtasyānāthamāpaṇe

'Once, having won money at dice and returning to my own home, I saw the corpse of an orphaned dead child in the marketplace.'

Verse 5 (padma.6.219.5)

निधाय तमहं मूर्ध्नि नीत्वा गंगातटे शुभे । वस्त्रादिभिरलंकृत्य चक्रे दाहादिसत्क्रियाम्

nidhāya tamahaṁ mūrdhni nītvā gaṁgātaṭe śubhe vastrādibhiralaṁkṛtya cakre dāhādisatkriyām

'Placing it upon my own head, and carrying it to the auspicious bank of the Ganga, having adorned it with cloth, I performed its cremation and other proper rites.'

Verse 6 (padma.6.219.6)

द्यूतेनोपार्ज्जितं द्रव्यं तत्सर्वं व्ययितं मया । तेन पुण्येन प्राप्तं मे तीर्थमेतच्छुभावहम्

dyūtenopārjjitaṁ dravyaṁ tatsarvaṁ vyayitaṁ mayā tena puṇyena prāptaṁ me tīrthametacchubhāvaham

'All that wealth, earned by gambling, I spent on that very deed. By that merit alone, this auspicious-bestowing tirtha came to me.'

Verse 7 (padma.6.219.7)

कुरु त्वं मम देहस्य संस्कारं दाहपूर्वकम्

kuru tvaṁ mama dehasya saṁskāraṁ dāhapūrvakam

'Now perform for this body of mine its due rite, beginning with cremation.'

Verse 8 (padma.6.219.8)

श्रीनारद उवाच- संस्कारे विहिते राजन्भरतः पापवानपि । तीर्थस्यास्य प्रसादेन पुष्करस्य गतो दिवि । मासमेकं यथा विष्णुः पुंडरीकगृहे हरिः

śrīnārada uvāca- saṁskāre vihite rājanbharataḥ pāpavānapi tīrthasyāsya prasādena puṣkarasya gato divi māsamekaṁ yathā viṣṇuḥ puṁḍarīkagṛhe hariḥ

Shri Narada said: 'O king, when the rite had been performed, Bharata, sinful though he was, by the grace of this Pushkara tirtha, went to heaven — and Vishnu, Hari, dwelt for a whole month in Pundarika's house.'

Verse 9 (padma.6.219.9)

उवासास्य प्रसादेन तीर्थस्य शृणु सांप्रतम् । अत्र तीर्थे स धर्मात्मा भरतस्यापि सद्गतिम् । दृष्ट्वेति हृदये मेने तीर्थमेतत्तु कामदम्

uvāsāsya prasādena tīrthasya śṛṇu sāṁpratam atra tīrthe sa dharmātmā bharatasyāpi sadgatim dṛṣṭveti hṛdaye mene tīrthametattu kāmadam

'Now hear how, by the grace of this tirtha, he came to dwell there. Seeing here at this tirtha the good end even of Bharata, that righteous man held it in his heart to be a wish-granting tirtha.'

Verse 10 (padma.6.219.10)

अत्रेति वांच्छया सस्नौ पुंडरीकः स पंडितः । माघमासं स्वरूपेण हरिर्वसतु मे गृहे

atreti vāṁcchayā sasnau puṁḍarīkaḥ sa paṁḍitaḥ māghamāsaṁ svarūpeṇa harirvasatu me gṛhe

'With this very desire, that learned Pundarika bathed there: "May Hari himself, in his own form, dwell in my house through the month of Magha."'

Verse 11 (padma.6.219.11)

एवं स्नात्वा स कामेन ययौ निजगृहं प्रति । तीर्थेऽत्र नृपतिश्रेष्ठ पुंडरीकोऽखिलार्थदे

evaṁ snātvā sa kāmena yayau nijagṛhaṁ prati tīrthe'tra nṛpatiśreṣṭha puṁḍarīko'khilārthade

'Having thus bathed with this desire, O best of kings, that Pundarika, from this all-desire-granting tirtha, set out toward his own home.'

Verse 12 (padma.6.219.12)

बंधुभ्यो मरणं भ्रातुर्भरतस्य जगाद ह । तेपि श्रुत्वा शुचं चक्रुर्माययावृतबुद्धयः

baṁdhubhyo maraṇaṁ bhrāturbharatasya jagāda ha tepi śrutvā śucaṁ cakrurmāyayāvṛtabuddhayaḥ

'He told his kinsmen the news of his brother Bharata's death; hearing it, they too, their minds veiled by Maya, fell into grief.'

Verse 13 (padma.6.219.13)

पुंडरीकस्तदा कुर्वन्गृहे स्वस्मिन्निजक्रियाः । उवासेति महानंदस्तपस्यायास्यते हरिः

puṁḍarīkastadā kurvangṛhe svasminnijakriyāḥ uvāseti mahānaṁdastapasyāyāsyate hariḥ

'Then Pundarika, performing his own daily rites right in his house, dwelt in great joy, thinking: "By my austerity, Hari will come here."'

Verse 14 (padma.6.219.14)

पूर्णिमायामथो पौष्यां चक्रे स परमोत्सवम् । मत्वेति श्वो गृहे मह्यं हरिरायास्यति ध्रुवम्

pūrṇimāyāmatho pauṣyāṁ cakre sa paramotsavam matveti śvo gṛhe mahyaṁ harirāyāsyati dhruvam

'Then, on the full moon of Pausha, he held a supreme festival, thinking: "Tomorrow, surely, Hari will come to my house."'

Verse 15 (padma.6.219.15)

श्रीखंडजलसेकेन गोमयालेपनेन च । मुक्ताचूर्णचतुष्केन समस्कुरुत केतनम्

śrīkhaṁḍajalasekena gomayālepanena ca muktācūrṇacatuṣkena samaskuruta ketanam

'With sprinklings of sandalwood-water, with plastering of cow-dung, and with fourfold ornamentation in pearl-powder, he decorated his dwelling.'

Verse 16 (padma.6.219.16)

शतद्वयं ब्राह्मणानां नानाभोज्यैरभोजयत् । वह्वीभिर्दक्षिणाभिश्च तानेव समतोषयत्

śatadvayaṁ brāhmaṇānāṁ nānābhojyairabhojayat vahvībhirdakṣiṇābhiśca tāneva samatoṣayat

'He fed two hundred brahmins with foods of many kinds, and satisfied those same brahmins with abundant gifts.'

Verse 17 (padma.6.219.17)

नानावादित्रकुशलैः कलकंठैश्च गायनैः । रजन्यां स्वजनैर्गायंश्चक्रे जागरणं तथा

nānāvāditrakuśalaiḥ kalakaṁṭhaiśca gāyanaiḥ rajanyāṁ svajanairgāyaṁścakre jāgaraṇaṁ tathā

'At night, with singers skilled in many instruments and sweet of voice, together with his own kinsfolk, singing, he kept the night-vigil.'

Verse 18 (padma.6.219.18)

अथ प्रभाते तान्सर्वान्गायनादीन्विसृज्य सः । गोविंदागमनाकांक्षी गृहमध्ये उपाविशत्

atha prabhāte tānsarvāngāyanādīnvisṛjya saḥ goviṁdāgamanākāṁkṣī gṛhamadhye upāviśat

'Then, at dawn, dismissing all those singers and the rest, longing for Govinda's arrival, he sat down within his house.'

Verse 19 (padma.6.219.19)

अथ तस्य गृहाभ्यासे निवर्त्य निजवाहनम् । प्राविशद्गृहमध्ये तु कर्तुं स्वजनवांछितम्

atha tasya gṛhābhyāse nivartya nijavāhanam prāviśadgṛhamadhye tu kartuṁ svajanavāṁchitam

'Then, near his house, turning back his own mount, he entered within the house, to fulfill his own devotee's wish.'

Verse 20 (padma.6.219.20)

स पुंडरीकस्तं दृष्ट्वा माधवं समुपागतम् । उत्थायासनतस्तूर्णं ववंदे शिरसा नृप

sa puṁḍarīkastaṁ dṛṣṭvā mādhavaṁ samupāgatam utthāyāsanatastūrṇaṁ vavaṁde śirasā nṛpa

'O king, seeing Madhava thus arrived, that Pundarika at once rose from his seat and bowed his head to him.'

Verse 21 (padma.6.219.21)

उवाच च स धर्म्मात्मा गोविंदालोकनिर्वृतः । संपूज्यार्घादिदानेन विष्टरे तं निवेशितम्

uvāca ca sa dharmmātmā goviṁdālokanirvṛtaḥ saṁpūjyārghādidānena viṣṭare taṁ niveśitam

'That righteous man, overjoyed at the sight of Govinda, worshipped him with argha and other offerings, and seated him upon a fine seat.'

Verse 22 (padma.6.219.22)

पुंडरीक उवाच- भवता भव तापघ्नं सुस्पष्टं तदनुष्ठितम् । तावदत्र त्वया विष्णो स्थीयतां स्थितिकारिणा

puṁḍarīka uvāca- bhavatā bhava tāpaghnaṁ suspaṣṭaṁ tadanuṣṭhitam tāvadatra tvayā viṣṇo sthīyatāṁ sthitikāriṇā

Pundarika said: 'You have now clearly performed for me that deed which destroys the torment of worldly existence. O Vishnu, now stay here, sustainer of all as you are—'

Verse 23 (padma.6.219.23)

यावदस्य पुनीतस्य समाप्तिस्तपसो भवेत् । यत्र त्वं सेवकास्ते च वसंति परिचर्यया

yāvadasya punītasya samāptistapaso bhavet yatra tvaṁ sevakāste ca vasaṁti paricaryayā

'—until this pure austerity of mine reaches its completion, in that very place where you and your servants dwell through their service—'

Verse 24 (padma.6.219.24)

तत्रैव खलु वैकुंठं सर्वदोषविवर्जितः । यद्गृहे तव कर्माणि वर्ण्यं ते साधुभिर्विभो

tatraiva khalu vaikuṁṭhaṁ sarvadoṣavivarjitaḥ yadgṛhe tava karmāṇi varṇyaṁ te sādhubhirvibho

'—there indeed is Vaikuntha itself, free from every fault, in whose house your own deeds are sung by the virtuous, O lord.'

Verse 25 (padma.6.219.25)

हरिर्निवसते तत्र सन्मुखादिति नः श्रुतम् । येषां वचसि ते नाम हृदि रूपं च सुंदरम्

harirnivasate tatra sanmukhāditi naḥ śrutam yeṣāṁ vacasi te nāma hṛdi rūpaṁ ca suṁdaram

'We have heard that Hari dwells there, before those in whose speech is his name, in whose heart his beautiful form—'

Verse 26 (padma.6.219.26)

कर्णयोश्च गुणारोपस्त एव खलु साधवः । भवतो भवते स्वांतं येषां शुश्रूषणे विभो

karṇayośca guṇāropasta eva khalu sādhavaḥ bhavato bhavate svāṁtaṁ yeṣāṁ śuśrūṣaṇe vibho

'—and in whose ears the hearing of his virtues resides — those alone, O lord, are truly saints, whose whole heart is set upon your service alone.'

Verse 27 (padma.6.219.27)

उत्तमांगे च निर्माल्यं त एव खलु साधवः । येषां तु बुद्धिः शत्रौ च मित्रे च कमलापते

uttamāṁge ca nirmālyaṁ ta eva khalu sādhavaḥ yeṣāṁ tu buddhiḥ śatrau ca mitre ca kamalāpate

'Those upon whose heads your own discarded offering rests adorned — they alone are truly saints; those whose mind toward enemy and friend—'

Verse 28 (padma.6.219.28)

चयापचययोश्चैव त एव खलु साधवः । येषां विकुरुते चेतो न विकारस्य कारणे

cayāpacayayoścaiva ta eva khalu sādhavaḥ yeṣāṁ vikurute ceto na vikārasya kāraṇe

'—and toward loss and gain remains the same, O Lord of Lakshmi, they alone are truly saints; those whose mind does not waver even when the very cause of disturbance is present—'

Verse 29 (padma.6.219.29)

संति लक्ष्मीपते नूनं त एव खलु साधवः । यत्र त्वं साधवस्तत्र संतो यत्र ततो भवान् । भवानतो विज्ञाय तां साधुं माघे मम गृहे वस

saṁti lakṣmīpate nūnaṁ ta eva khalu sādhavaḥ yatra tvaṁ sādhavastatra saṁto yatra tato bhavān bhavānato vijñāya tāṁ sādhuṁ māghe mama gṛhe vasa

'—O Lord of Lakshmi, they surely alone are the saints. Where you are, there the saints are; where the saints are, there you are. Knowing this, O saintly one, dwell in my house through the month of Magha.'

Verse 30 (padma.6.219.30)

नारद उवाच- इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य पुंडरीकस्य माधवः । उवाच वचनं भासादंतानां भासयन्दिशः

nārada uvāca- ityākarṇya vacastasya puṁḍarīkasya mādhavaḥ uvāca vacanaṁ bhāsādaṁtānāṁ bhāsayandiśaḥ

Narada said: 'Hearing Pundarika's words, Madhava, illuminating all directions with the radiance of his teeth, spoke this word.'

Verse 31 (padma.6.219.31)

श्रीभगवानुवाच- साधूनामुत्तमः साधुस्त्वं पृथिव्यां महामते । यत्त्वया पुण्यतीर्थे तु स्नातं मत्संगवांछया

śrībhagavānuvāca- sādhūnāmuttamaḥ sādhustvaṁ pṛthivyāṁ mahāmate yattvayā puṇyatīrthe tu snātaṁ matsaṁgavāṁchayā

The blessed Lord said: 'O great-minded one, you are the best of the good upon this earth, in that you bathed at this sacred tirtha out of desire for union with me.'

Verse 32 (padma.6.219.32)

उत्तिष्ठ जाह्नवीतोय माघे स्नानं कुरु द्विज । माघांते स्नापयामि त्वां पूर्णिमायां तु पुष्करे

uttiṣṭha jāhnavītoya māghe snānaṁ kuru dvija māghāṁte snāpayāmi tvāṁ pūrṇimāyāṁ tu puṣkare

'Rise, O brahmin, and bathe in the waters of the Jahnavi during Magha; at the end of Magha, on the full moon, I shall have you bathe at Pushkara.'

Verse 33 (padma.6.219.33)

प्रयागे माघमासे तु पूर्णं यत्स्नानजं फलम् । तत्सर्वं पुष्करे तीर्थे दिनैकस्नानतो भवेत्

prayāge māghamāse tu pūrṇaṁ yatsnānajaṁ phalam tatsarvaṁ puṣkare tīrthe dinaikasnānato bhavet

'Whatever complete fruit arises from bathing at Prayaga in the month of Magha, all of that arises from a single day's bathing at the Pushkara tirtha.'

Verse 34 (padma.6.219.34)

नारद उवाच- एवमुक्तः स विप्रेंद्रः पुंडरीको मुरारिणा । किंचिदभ्युदिते सूर्ये स्नानं गंगाजलेऽकरोत्

nārada uvāca- evamuktaḥ sa vipreṁdraḥ puṁḍarīko murāriṇā kiṁcidabhyudite sūrye snānaṁ gaṁgājale'karot

Narada said: 'Thus addressed by Murari, that foremost brahmin Pundarika, as the sun rose a little, bathed in the water of the Ganga.'

Verse 35 (padma.6.219.35)

प्रत्यक्ष पुंडरीकाक्ष पुंडरीकः समर्चयत् । तुलसीविकसत्पुष्पयवकुंकुमचंदनैः

pratyakṣa puṁḍarīkākṣa puṁḍarīkaḥ samarcayat tulasīvikasatpuṣpayavakuṁkumacaṁdanaiḥ

'Face to face with Pundarikaksha, Pundarika worshipped him with blossoming tulasi flowers, barley, saffron, and sandal-paste.'

Verse 36 (padma.6.219.36)

धूपैरगरुजैरंगवासितांगं रमापतिम् । नीराजयति कर्पूरदीपकैः पंचभिः स्म सः

dhūpairagarujairaṁgavāsitāṁgaṁ ramāpatim nīrājayati karpūradīpakaiḥ paṁcabhiḥ sma saḥ

'Perfuming the limbs of the Lord of Lakshmi with fragrant agaru incense, he performed arati before him with five camphor lamps.'

Verse 37 (padma.6.219.37)

चतुर्विधमयैर्भोज्यैर्भोजयित्वा जगद्गुरुम् । सुप्तं स मणिपर्यंके चामरैस्तमवीजयत्

caturvidhamayairbhojyairbhojayitvā jagadgurum suptaṁ sa maṇiparyaṁke cāmaraistamavījayat

'Having fed the world-guru with fourfold foods, he fanned him with chowries as he lay sleeping upon a jeweled couch.'

Verse 38 (padma.6.219.38)

पादसंवाहनं जातु चक्रे तस्य रमापतेः । जातकर्पूरसंयुक्तं ददौ तांबूलवीटकम्

pādasaṁvāhanaṁ jātu cakre tasya ramāpateḥ jātakarpūrasaṁyuktaṁ dadau tāṁbūlavīṭakam

'At times he would massage the feet of that Lord of Lakshmi, and offer him a betel-roll mixed with camphor.'

Verse 39 (padma.6.219.39)

उष्णीषं बध्नतस्तस्य श्रीपतेः पुरतस्तदा । तस्थौ जातु स विप्रेंद्रः करेणानीय दर्पणम्

uṣṇīṣaṁ badhnatastasya śrīpateḥ puratastadā tasthau jātu sa vipreṁdraḥ kareṇānīya darpaṇam

'Once, while tying the turban before that Lord of Shri, that foremost brahmin stood there, having brought a mirror in his hand.'

Verse 40 (padma.6.219.40)

एवं निजगृहे तस्य वसतः स भवच्छिदः । सपर्यां विदधद्विप्रो माघं निन्ये स मस्तकम्

evaṁ nijagṛhe tasya vasataḥ sa bhavacchidaḥ saparyāṁ vidadhadvipro māghaṁ ninye sa mastakam

'Thus, dwelling in his own house, performing service to that destroyer of worldly bondage, that brahmin brought the month of Magha to its very culmination.'

Verse 41 (padma.6.219.41)

अथ माघावसाने तु पूर्णिमायां रमापतेः । स्मृतिमात्रागतं तार्क्ष्यमपश्यत्पुरतः स्थितम्

atha māghāvasāne tu pūrṇimāyāṁ ramāpateḥ smṛtimātrāgataṁ tārkṣyamapaśyatpurataḥ sthitam

'Then, at the end of Magha, on the full moon, the Lord of Lakshmi saw, standing before him, Garuda, come merely at his thought.'

Verse 42 (padma.6.219.42)

तं दृष्ट्वा पुंडरीकाक्षः पुंडरीकमुवाच ह । श्रीभगवानुवाच- श्रूयतां भो द्विजश्रेष्ठ यद्वचोऽहं वदामि ते

taṁ dṛṣṭvā puṁḍarīkākṣaḥ puṁḍarīkamuvāca ha śrībhagavānuvāca- śrūyatāṁ bho dvijaśreṣṭha yadvaco'haṁ vadāmi te

'Seeing him, Pundarikaksha spoke to Pundarika. The blessed Lord said: "O foremost of brahmins, hear what I now say to you."'

Verse 43 (padma.6.219.43)

इंद्रप्रस्थगते तीर्थे पुष्करे ते यदृच्छया । स्नानायते मया दत्तं यन्मासमुषितं मया

iṁdraprasthagate tīrthe puṣkare te yadṛcchayā snānāyate mayā dattaṁ yanmāsamuṣitaṁ mayā

'"At the Pushkara tirtha situated at Indraprastha, you, of your own accord, gave me over to bathing there; that same month I have dwelt here."'

Verse 44 (padma.6.219.44)

अद्यपक्षींद्रमारुह्य मया सह महामते । व्रज तीर्थशिरोरत्नं तदेव प्रति पुष्करे

adyapakṣīṁdramāruhya mayā saha mahāmate vraja tīrthaśiroratnaṁ tadeva prati puṣkare

'"O great-minded one, now, mounting the king of birds together with me, go to that very crest-jewel of tirthas, Pushkara."'

Verse 45 (padma.6.219.45)

चतुर्वर्गप्रदे तस्मिन्स्नानं कुर्वन्यदीच्छसि । तदहं ते प्रदास्यामि यदहं तद्वशे द्विज

caturvargaprade tasminsnānaṁ kurvanyadīcchasi tadahaṁ te pradāsyāmi yadahaṁ tadvaśe dvija

'"If you desire to bathe in that place granting all four aims of life, then I shall grant it to you — for even I, O brahmin, am subject to its power."'

Verse 46 (padma.6.219.46)

पापोऽपि भरतस्ते वै भ्राता यत्र मृतो गतः । स्वर्गं स्वर्गसुखाकांक्षी किमन्यत्तस्य वर्ण्यते

pāpo'pi bharataste vai bhrātā yatra mṛto gataḥ svargaṁ svargasukhākāṁkṣī kimanyattasya varṇyate

'"Even your sinful brother Bharata, having died there, desiring the pleasures of heaven, went to heaven — what more is there to say of him?"'

Verse 47 (padma.6.219.47)

नारद उवाच- एवमुक्त्वा स देवेंद्रो ब्राह्मणेंद्रं नरेंद्र तम् । पतगेंद्रं समारोप्य सर्वतीर्थेंद्रमागमत्

nārada uvāca- evamuktvā sa deveṁdro brāhmaṇeṁdraṁ nareṁdra tam patageṁdraṁ samāropya sarvatīrtheṁdramāgamat

Narada said: 'O king, having said this, that lord of gods, mounting that foremost brahmin upon the king of birds, arrived at that king of all tirthas, Pushkara.'

Verse 48 (padma.6.219.48)

पुंडरीकस्य देहात्तु तेन तत्प्राणवायुना । समं ज्योतिः स निर्गत्य गोविंदपदमाविशत्

puṁḍarīkasya dehāttu tena tatprāṇavāyunā samaṁ jyotiḥ sa nirgatya goviṁdapadamāviśat

'From Pundarika's body, together with that very breath of life, a light emerged and entered into Govinda's own abode.'

Verse 49 (padma.6.219.49)

एवं पुष्करतीर्थेऽस्मिन्निंद्रप्रस्थगते नृप । स्नानेन पुंडरीकस्तु लेभे सायुज्यमीश्वरे

evaṁ puṣkaratīrthe'sminniṁdraprasthagate nṛpa snānena puṁḍarīkastu lebhe sāyujyamīśvare

'O king, thus, by bathing at this Pushkara tirtha situated at Indraprastha, Pundarika obtained union with the Lord himself.'

Verse 50 (padma.6.219.50)

एवं तीर्थानुरोधेन गोविंदोऽपि च तद्गृहे । मासमेकं सुखं राजन्नुवास निजबंधुवत्

evaṁ tīrthānurodhena goviṁdo'pi ca tadgṛhe māsamekaṁ sukhaṁ rājannuvāsa nijabaṁdhuvat

'O king, thus, in keeping with the tirtha, Govinda too dwelt happily in his house for a whole month, like his own kinsman.'

Verse 51 (padma.6.219.51)

केन वर्णयितुं शक्यो महिमा पुष्करस्य वै । शक्रप्रस्थगतस्यास्य कोट्यंशो वर्णितो मया

kena varṇayituṁ śakyo mahimā puṣkarasya vai śakraprasthagatasyāsya koṭyaṁśo varṇito mayā

'Who indeed is able to describe the greatness of this Pushkara, situated at Shakraprastha? I have described to you but a ten-millionth part of it.'

Verse 52 (padma.6.219.52)

माहात्म्यश्रवणादस्य श्रद्धया लभते नरः । अश्वमेधक्रतुफलं पठनादपि भूपते

māhātmyaśravaṇādasya śraddhayā labhate naraḥ aśvamedhakratuphalaṁ paṭhanādapi bhūpate

'O king, by hearing this glory with faith, or even merely by reciting it, a man obtains the fruit of an Ashvamedha sacrifice.'
