Verse 1 (padma.6.220.1)

नारद उवाच- शिवस्यतीर्थराजस्य प्रयागस्य तवाग्रतः । महिमानं महापुण्यं श्रद्धया वर्णयामि ते

nārada uvāca- śivasyatīrtharājasya prayāgasya tavāgrataḥ mahimānaṁ mahāpuṇyaṁ śraddhayā varṇayāmi te

Narada said: 'The greatly sacred glory of Prayaga, the king of tirthas, auspicious as Shiva himself, I shall now describe before you with reverence.'

Verse 2 (padma.6.220.2)

विश्वावसुर्महीपाल गंधर्वो लोकविश्रुतः । एकदा स गतो गातुं सुमेरौ ब्रह्मणः सभाम्

viśvāvasurmahīpāla gaṁdharvo lokaviśrutaḥ ekadā sa gato gātuṁ sumerau brahmaṇaḥ sabhām

'O king, once the world-renowned gandharva named Vishvavasu went to Mount Sumeru, to sing in the assembly of Brahma.'

Verse 3 (padma.6.220.3)

तत्र सर्वैः सुरश्रेष्ठमुपविष्टं सुविष्टरे । जुष्टं सुरगणैर्भूप विश्वावसुरवैक्षत

tatra sarvaiḥ suraśreṣṭhamupaviṣṭaṁ suviṣṭare juṣṭaṁ suragaṇairbhūpa viśvāvasuravaikṣata

'O king, there Vishvavasu beheld Brahma, foremost of the gods, seated upon an excellent seat, attended by the multitude of gods.'

Verse 4 (padma.6.220.4)

ब्रह्मासनसमीपे तु वरासनगतं नृप । द्वितीयमिव लोकेशमिंद्रप्रस्थं स एक्षत

brahmāsanasamīpe tu varāsanagataṁ nṛpa dvitīyamiva lokeśamiṁdraprasthaṁ sa ekṣata

'O king, he saw Indraprastha, seated upon an excellent seat near Brahma's own seat, as though a second lord of the world.'

Verse 5 (padma.6.220.5)

सुरराजतीर्थराजौ ब्रह्मेंद्रप्रस्थयोर्नृप । चामरोद्धूननं मूर्ध्नि कुर्वंतौ स ददर्श ह

surarājatīrtharājau brahmeṁdraprasthayornṛpa cāmaroddhūnanaṁ mūrdhni kurvaṁtau sa dadarśa ha

'O king, he saw the king of the gods and the king of tirthas — Indra and Indraprastha — both waving chowries over Brahma's head.'

Verse 6 (padma.6.220.6)

अन्यानि देवतीर्थानि तयोर्दूरे महीपते । स्थितानि तेन दृष्टानि बद्धांजलिपुटानि तु

anyāni devatīrthāni tayordūre mahīpate sthitāni tena dṛṣṭāni baddhāṁjalipuṭāni tu

'O king, he saw the other divine tirthas standing far off from them, their hands joined in reverence.'

Verse 7 (padma.6.220.7)

तयोरग्रे जगौ राजन्गांधर्वं रागमुत्तमम् । तीर्थैः सममगात्सत्यलोकं देवान्विसृज्य हि

tayoragre jagau rājangāṁdharvaṁ rāgamuttamam tīrthaiḥ samamagātsatyalokaṁ devānvisṛjya hi

'O king, before those two he sang an excellent song in gandharva melody; then, leaving the gods behind, he went on to Satyaloka together with the tirthas.'

Verse 8 (padma.6.220.8)

अथ विश्वावसुर्द्धीमान्दृष्ट्वा तीर्थस्य वैभवम् । इंद्रप्रस्थस्य राजेंद्र हाहामेतदुवाच ह

atha viśvāvasurddhīmāndṛṣṭvā tīrthasya vaibhavam iṁdraprasthasya rājeṁdra hāhāmetaduvāca ha

'O king of kings, then the wise Vishvavasu, seeing this splendor of the Indraprastha tirtha, exclaimed in astonishment.'

Verse 9 (padma.6.220.9)

विश्वावसुरुवाच- भोभो गंधर्वशार्दूल तीर्थमेतन्महाद्भुतम् । इंद्रप्रस्थाख्यमेतस्मिन्संसारे तीर्थराशिषु

viśvāvasuruvāca- bhobho gaṁdharvaśārdūla tīrthametanmahādbhutam iṁdraprasthākhyametasminsaṁsāre tīrtharāśiṣu

Vishvavasu said: 'O tiger among gandharvas, among all the multitudes of tirthas in this universe, this tirtha named Indraprastha is most wondrous indeed.'

Verse 10 (padma.6.220.10)

चराचरगुरुर्ब्रह्मा सुरवंद्य पदांबुजः । तस्यासनसमीपस्थं यदतिष्ठ समासनम्

carācaragururbrahmā suravaṁdya padāṁbujaḥ tasyāsanasamīpasthaṁ yadatiṣṭha samāsanam

'Brahma, guru of all things moving and unmoving, whose lotus feet are worshipped by the gods — right beside his own seat, upon an equal seat, this one sits.'

Verse 11 (padma.6.220.11)

तीर्थराजोऽपि पृष्ठस्थश्चामरं यस्य मस्तके । अधुना भृत्यवज्जातस्तीर्थेष्वन्येषु का कथा

tīrtharājo'pi pṛṣṭhasthaścāmaraṁ yasya mastake adhunā bhṛtyavajjātastīrtheṣvanyeṣu kā kathā

'Though itself the very king of tirthas, standing behind, waving a chowrie over his head, it has now become like a mere servant — what then is there to say of the other tirthas!'

Verse 12 (padma.6.220.12)

पृथिव्यां यानि तीर्थानि त्रिवर्गफलदानि तु । इंद्रप्रस्थमिदं तीर्थं चतुर्वर्गफलप्रदम्

pṛthivyāṁ yāni tīrthāni trivargaphaladāni tu iṁdraprasthamidaṁ tīrthaṁ caturvargaphalapradam

'Whatever tirthas on earth grant the fruit of the threefold aim of life, this tirtha of Indraprastha, beyond them, grants the fruit of all four aims.'

Verse 13 (padma.6.220.13)

अत्र स्थितानि तीर्थानि तादृशानि गुणैर्ध्रुवः । शेषेनापि न शक्यंते स्तोतुं तेषां महागुणाः

atra sthitāni tīrthāni tādṛśāni guṇairdhruvaḥ śeṣenāpi na śakyaṁte stotuṁ teṣāṁ mahāguṇāḥ

'The tirthas situated here are of such unwavering virtues that even Shesha himself is unable to praise their great qualities in full.'

Verse 14 (padma.6.220.14)

नारद उवाच-। एवं विश्वावसुर्धीमान्दृष्ट्वेंद्रप्रस्थवैभवम् । गत्वा तस्य गृहं राजन्पावनं सर्वकामदम्

nārada uvāca- evaṁ viśvāvasurdhīmāndṛṣṭveṁdraprasthavaibhavam gatvā tasya gṛhaṁ rājanpāvanaṁ sarvakāmadam

Narada said: 'O king, thus the wise Vishvavasu, having seen this splendor of Indraprastha, went on to its own purifying, all-desire-granting abode.'

Verse 15 (padma.6.220.15)

यथा देवेषु सर्वेषु शक्रः श्रेष्ठः शचीपतिः । तस्माद्ब्रह्मा च तीर्थेषु प्रयागोऽयं तथा वरः

yathā deveṣu sarveṣu śakraḥ śreṣṭhaḥ śacīpatiḥ tasmādbrahmā ca tīrtheṣu prayāgo'yaṁ tathā varaḥ

'As, among all the gods, Shakra, husband of Shachi, is supreme, and above him Brahma — so too, among tirthas, this Prayaga is likewise supreme.'

Verse 16 (padma.6.220.16)

तस्मादपि महाराज शक्रप्रस्थमिदं वरम् । अस्यांतरगतो योऽयं प्रयागो नृप दृश्यते

tasmādapi mahārāja śakraprasthamidaṁ varam asyāṁtaragato yo'yaṁ prayāgo nṛpa dṛśyate

'O great king, and beyond even that, this Shakraprastha is supreme; for, O king, this Prayaga that is seen here lies within it.'

Verse 17 (padma.6.220.17)

कथयाम्यत्र यद्वृत्तं मोहिन्याः पण्ययोषितः । नर्मदासरितस्तीरे पुरी माहिष्मती नृप

kathayāmyatra yadvṛttaṁ mohinyāḥ paṇyayoṣitaḥ narmadāsaritastīre purī māhiṣmatī nṛpa

'O king, I shall now relate what happened here regarding a courtesan named Mohini. On the bank of the river Narmada was a city named Mahishmati.'

Verse 18 (padma.6.220.18)

मोहिनीनाम तत्रासीद्वेश्या बहुधनान्विता । रूपयौवनसंपन्ना निष्णाता नृत्यगीतयोः

mohinīnāma tatrāsīdveśyā bahudhanānvitā rūpayauvanasaṁpannā niṣṇātā nṛtyagītayoḥ

'There lived a courtesan named Mohini, endowed with great wealth, possessed of beauty and youth, skilled in dance and song.'

Verse 19 (padma.6.220.19)

तया बहूनि पापानि कृतानि धनलुब्धया । ब्रह्महत्याः कृताः सप्त दास्यश्च बहवो हताः

tayā bahūni pāpāni kṛtāni dhanalubdhayā brahmahatyāḥ kṛtāḥ sapta dāsyaśca bahavo hatāḥ

'That woman, greedy for wealth, committed many sins — she caused seven murders of brahmins, and killed many of her own slave-girls too.'

Verse 20 (padma.6.220.20)

तासां च पातिता गर्भाः बहुशः पापया तया । एवं तया सुतारुण्यं गमितं पापकर्मभिः

tāsāṁ ca pātitā garbhāḥ bahuśaḥ pāpayā tayā evaṁ tayā sutāruṇyaṁ gamitaṁ pāpakarmabhiḥ

'That sinful woman also repeatedly caused the abortion of those slave-girls' pregnancies. Thus she spent her youth entirely in sinful deeds.'

Verse 21 (padma.6.220.21)

ततो जरा कियत्काले तद्देहे समपद्यत । जराग्रस्तशरीरा सा निवृत्तविषयस्पृहा

tato jarā kiyatkāle taddehe samapadyata jarāgrastaśarīrā sā nivṛttaviṣayaspṛhā

'Then, after some time, old age came upon her body; her body now seized by age, she became free of longing for sensory pleasures.'

Verse 22 (padma.6.220.22)

न चक्रे मानसं यूनां ते च तां पतिभूपते । पापार्जितं धनं स्वीयं न विश्वसिति कस्यचित्

na cakre mānasaṁ yūnāṁ te ca tāṁ patibhūpate pāpārjitaṁ dhanaṁ svīyaṁ na viśvasiti kasyacit

'O king, the minds of young men no longer turned to her, nor hers to them; she trusted no one with her own sin-earned wealth.'

Verse 23 (padma.6.220.23)

न दत्ते न स्वयं भुंक्ते न निक्षिपति वै क्वचित् । एकदा सा निशीथे तु विबुध्येति विचिंतयत्

na datte na svayaṁ bhuṁkte na nikṣipati vai kvacit ekadā sā niśīthe tu vibudhyeti viciṁtayat

'She would neither give it away, nor enjoy it herself, nor deposit it anywhere. Once, waking at midnight, she reflected thus—'

Verse 24 (padma.6.220.24)

मृतायां मयि कस्येदं धनं पापैरुपार्जितम् । तं नयिष्यति मां घोरं नरकं भृशदारुणम्

mṛtāyāṁ mayi kasyedaṁ dhanaṁ pāpairupārjitam taṁ nayiṣyati māṁ ghoraṁ narakaṁ bhṛśadāruṇam

'—"When I die, whose will this wealth, earned through sins, become? It will lead me to a most dreadful, terrible hell."'

Verse 25 (padma.6.220.25)

दास्यस्तासां च भर्त्तारस्तद्भोक्ष्यंति धनं मम । मयैव सद्गतिस्तस्य कथं न क्रियतेऽधुना

dāsyastāsāṁ ca bharttārastadbhokṣyaṁti dhanaṁ mama mayaiva sadgatistasya kathaṁ na kriyate'dhunā

'"The husbands of these slave-girls will enjoy this wealth of mine; why then should I not now secure a good end for myself with it?"'

Verse 26 (padma.6.220.26)

एवं विचिंत्य सा धर्मे विधाय मतिमुत्तमाम् । चकारारामसरसि वापीकूपसुरालयान्

evaṁ viciṁtya sā dharme vidhāya matimuttamām cakārārāmasarasi vāpīkūpasurālayān

'Having thus reflected, and fixing her excellent mind upon dharma, she had pleasure-gardens, lakes, step-wells, wells, and temples built.'

Verse 27 (padma.6.220.27)

अभितः पुरमाधत्ते प्रपाः पथिकहेतवे । निदाघे च महाराज तेभ्योऽन्नं प्रददौ च सा

abhitaḥ puramādhatte prapāḥ pathikahetave nidāghe ca mahārāja tebhyo'nnaṁ pradadau ca sā

'O great king, she had water-sheds built for travelers all around the city, and in the summer heat gave them food as well.'

Verse 28 (padma.6.220.28)

धर्मशालां गृहाभ्याशे निवासाय विदेशिनाम् । विदधे सा पुनस्तेभ्यो ददावाहारमुत्तमम्

dharmaśālāṁ gṛhābhyāśe nivāsāya videśinām vidadhe sā punastebhyo dadāvāhāramuttamam

'Near her own house she had a rest-house built for the lodging of foreigners, and again gave them excellent food.'

Verse 29 (padma.6.220.29)

एवं प्रवर्त्तमाना हि धर्मे सा भूपमोहिनी । ज्वरातुराभवत्काले क्वचिच्चेति विचिंतयत्

evaṁ pravarttamānā hi dharme sā bhūpamohinī jvarāturābhavatkāle kvacicceti viciṁtayat

'Thus engaged in dharma, that Mohini, king-beguiling as she was, once, in the course of time, fell ill with fever, and reflected thus.'

Verse 30 (padma.6.220.30)

धर्मार्थे हि मया वित्तं व्ययितं भूरि यद्यपि । तथापि स्वर्णरूप्यादि प्रचुरं वर्त्तते परम्

dharmārthe hi mayā vittaṁ vyayitaṁ bhūri yadyapi tathāpi svarṇarūpyādi pracuraṁ varttate param

'"Although I have spent much wealth for the sake of dharma, still gold, silver, and the like remain in abundance."'

Verse 31 (padma.6.220.31)

श्रोत्रियेभ्यो ददाम्येतज्ज्ञानेनेति व्यचिंतयत् । विचिंत्येति समाहूता मोहिन्या नगरद्विजाः

śrotriyebhyo dadāmyetajjñāneneti vyaciṁtayat viciṁtyeti samāhūtā mohinyā nagaradvijāḥ

'"This I shall give, with understanding, to learned brahmins" — thus she reflected. Having thought this, Mohini summoned the brahmins of the city.'

Verse 32 (padma.6.220.32)

नागतास्ते महीपाल ज्ञात्वा घोरं प्रतिग्रहम् । यदा तदा द्विभागं च चक्रे तत्तु धनं स्वकम्

nāgatāste mahīpāla jñātvā ghoraṁ pratigraham yadā tadā dvibhāgaṁ ca cakre tattu dhanaṁ svakam

'O king, knowing that gift to be a dreadful one, they did not come. Then she divided that wealth of hers into two parts.'

Verse 33 (padma.6.220.33)

एको भागस्तु दासीनां दत्तोन्यश्च विदेशिनाम् । स्वयं तु निर्द्धना राजन्नभवत्सा तु मोहिनी

eko bhāgastu dāsīnāṁ dattonyaśca videśinām svayaṁ tu nirddhanā rājannabhavatsā tu mohinī

'One part she gave to her slave-girls, the other to foreigners; O king, that Mohini herself then became penniless.'

Verse 34 (padma.6.220.34)

तथा समागतं मृत्युं विज्ञायांतिकमंतिके । मुक्त्वा दास्यो धनं नीत्वा यथेष्टगतयोऽभवत्

tathā samāgataṁ mṛtyuṁ vijñāyāṁtikamaṁtike muktvā dāsyo dhanaṁ nītvā yatheṣṭagatayo'bhavat

'Thus, sensing her death drawing ever nearer, her slave-girls, now freed, took the wealth and went wherever they pleased.'

Verse 35 (padma.6.220.35)

इति मत्वा यदा ह्येषा ज्वरमुक्ता भविष्यति । तदानीं यद्धनं दत्तं नूनमादास्यते हि तत्

iti matvā yadā hyeṣā jvaramuktā bhaviṣyati tadānīṁ yaddhanaṁ dattaṁ nūnamādāsyate hi tat

'Thinking, "When she is freed from this fever, she will surely take back the wealth that has been given."'

Verse 36 (padma.6.220.36)

अथ सा लंघनान्यष्टादशकृत्वा महीपते । निजायुषस्तु शेषेण ज्वरमुक्ता तदाभवत्

atha sā laṁghanānyaṣṭādaśakṛtvā mahīpate nijāyuṣastu śeṣeṇa jvaramuktā tadābhavat

'O king, then, after fasting eighteen times, by the strength of her remaining lifespan, she became free of the fever.'

Verse 37 (padma.6.220.37)

एका जरद्गवानाम सखी तस्या महीपते । सा तामुपचचाराशु पथ्यादिभिरतंद्रिता

ekā jaradgavānāma sakhī tasyā mahīpate sā tāmupacacārāśu pathyādibhirataṁdritā

'O king, she had a friend named Jaradgava; she nursed her tirelessly with proper diet and the rest.'

Verse 38 (padma.6.220.38)

कियद्भिर्वासरैः सा तु पूर्णाहारा व्यजायत । तस्या जरद्गवायास्तु गृहे भुक्तं स्म लज्जया

kiyadbhirvāsaraiḥ sā tu pūrṇāhārā vyajāyata tasyā jaradgavāyāstu gṛhe bhuktaṁ sma lajjayā

'Within a few days she became able to take full meals again; but she ate in that Jaradgava's house alone, out of shame.'

Verse 39 (padma.6.220.39)

मया स्थितं सुखेनात्र दुःखमद्य समागतम् । दारिद्र्यान्न मया स्थेयं सचिंत्येति गतान्यतः

mayā sthitaṁ sukhenātra duḥkhamadya samāgatam dāridryānna mayā stheyaṁ saciṁtyeti gatānyataḥ

'"I who lived here in comfort — today misery has come upon me; out of poverty I must not remain here" — thinking thus, she went from there elsewhere.'

Verse 40 (padma.6.220.40)

गच्छती सा वने राजन्मोहिनी पुरतस्करैः । इति मत्वा विनिहता गृहीत्वा यात्यसौ धनम्

gacchatī sā vane rājanmohinī purataskaraiḥ iti matvā vinihatā gṛhītvā yātyasau dhanam

'O king, as that Mohini went through the forest, the city's thieves, thinking her wealthy, struck her down.'

Verse 41 (padma.6.220.41)

धनमप्राप्य तैस्तस्याः सकाशात्पुरतस्करैः । श्वसती सा परित्यक्ता तस्मिन्नेव वने नृप

dhanamaprāpya taistasyāḥ sakāśātpurataskaraiḥ śvasatī sā parityaktā tasminneva vane nṛpa

'When those thieves obtained no wealth from her, they left her there, still gasping for breath, abandoned in that same forest.'

Verse 42 (padma.6.220.42)

अथ वैखानसः कश्चित्प्रयागस्यास्य वै जलम् । बिभ्रत्कमंडलौ राजन्नत्रारण्ये समाययौ

atha vaikhānasaḥ kaścitprayāgasyāsya vai jalam bibhratkamaṁḍalau rājannatrāraṇye samāyayau

'O king, then a certain forest-dwelling hermit, carrying in his kamandalu the very water of this Prayaga situated at Indraprastha, arrived there in that wilderness.'

Verse 43 (padma.6.220.43)

अथ तां पतितां वीक्ष्य शस्त्रविक्षतविग्रहाम् । याचमानामिदं राजन् जीवनं हस्तसंज्ञया

atha tāṁ patitāṁ vīkṣya śastravikṣatavigrahām yācamānāmidaṁ rājan jīvanaṁ hastasaṁjñayā

'O king, seeing her fallen there, her body wounded by weapons, begging by a gesture of the hand for the gift of life—'

Verse 44 (padma.6.220.44)

वैखानस उवाच- का त्वं केन शितैः शस्त्रैः सक्षतीकृतविग्रहा । एकाकिनी किमर्थं वा निर्जनारण्यमागता

vaikhānasa uvāca- kā tvaṁ kena śitaiḥ śastraiḥ sakṣatīkṛtavigrahā ekākinī kimarthaṁ vā nirjanāraṇyamāgatā

The hermit said: 'Who are you, whose sharp weapons have wounded your body thus, and why have you come here alone into this lonely forest?'

Verse 45 (padma.6.220.45)

इंद्रप्रस्थगतस्येदं प्रयागस्य जले शुभे । भाग्योदयेन केनापि प्रापितं प्रियकाम्यया

iṁdraprasthagatasyedaṁ prayāgasya jale śubhe bhāgyodayena kenāpi prāpitaṁ priyakāmyayā

'This water of Prayaga, that auspicious tirtha situated at Indraprastha, was, by some rise of fortune, brought to her, out of the wish for compassion.'

Verse 46 (padma.6.220.46)

इत्युक्ता तेन सा वक्तुमक्षमा व्याददे मुखम् । पातुं तद्वारिमहिषी भवेयमिति वांछया

ityuktā tena sā vaktumakṣamā vyādade mukham pātuṁ tadvārimahiṣī bhaveyamiti vāṁchayā

'Thus addressed by him, unable to speak, she opened her mouth — with the desire that, by drinking that water, she might become an empress.'

Verse 47 (padma.6.220.47)

अथैतस्य प्रयागस्य पातितेंबुनि तन्मुखे । तत्याज जीवितं सा तु मोहिनीगणिका नृप

athaitasya prayāgasya pātiteṁbuni tanmukhe tatyāja jīvitaṁ sā tu mohinīgaṇikā nṛpa

'O king, then, as this water of Prayaga was poured into her mouth, that courtesan named Mohini gave up her life.'

Verse 48 (padma.6.220.48)

प्राणप्रयाणकाले तु महिषीत्वं च वांच्छयत् । अतः सा महिषी जाता द्राविडे वीरवर्मणः

prāṇaprayāṇakāle tu mahiṣītvaṁ ca vāṁcchayat ataḥ sā mahiṣī jātā drāviḍe vīravarmaṇaḥ

'At the moment of her passing, she had wished to become a queen; therefore she was reborn as the queen of Viravarma, in the Dravida country.'

Verse 49 (padma.6.220.49)

संभूय केरलाधीश गृहे तीर्थांबुपानतः । कुलशीलधनैश्वर्यसंयुक्तस्य महीपते

saṁbhūya keralādhīśa gṛhe tīrthāṁbupānataḥ kulaśīladhanaiśvaryasaṁyuktasya mahīpate

'O king, by the power of drinking that tirtha's water, having been conceived in the house of that lord of Kerala, endowed with lineage, character, wealth, and majesty—'

Verse 50 (padma.6.220.50)

हेमगौरं ततः सांगं बभार कमलेक्षणा । अतस्तस्य पिता नाम हेमांगीति चकार ह

hemagauraṁ tataḥ sāṁgaṁ babhāra kamalekṣaṇā atastasya pitā nāma hemāṁgīti cakāra ha

'—that lotus-eyed queen then gave birth to a daughter, her limbs fair as gold; and so her father gave her the name Hemangi.'

Verse 51 (padma.6.220.51)

एकदा सा तु हेमांगी हेमाभरणभूषिता । कलायाः स्ववयस्याया मंत्रिपुत्र्या गृहं ययौ

ekadā sā tu hemāṁgī hemābharaṇabhūṣitā kalāyāḥ svavayasyāyā maṁtriputryā gṛhaṁ yayau

'Once, that Hemangi, adorned with golden ornaments, went to the house of her friend Kala, the minister's daughter.'

Verse 52 (padma.6.220.52)

तत्र यावकतैलेन स्नापिता भोजिता च सा । विविधान्नैस्तदा राजन्निविष्टा वरविष्टरे

tatra yāvakatailena snāpitā bhojitā ca sā vividhānnaistadā rājanniviṣṭā varaviṣṭare

'O king, there she was bathed with barley-oil, fed with various dishes, and seated upon an excellent seat.'

Verse 53 (padma.6.220.53)

पुष्पोद्ग्रथित धमिल्ला क्षामक्षौमविभूषिता । कलां प्रोवाच दधती मुखे तांबूलवीटिकाम्

puṣpodgrathita dhamillā kṣāmakṣaumavibhūṣitā kalāṁ provāca dadhatī mukhe tāṁbūlavīṭikām

'With her hair bound in a knot threaded with flowers, adorned in fine silken garments, a betel-roll held in her mouth, she spoke to Kala.'

हेमांग्युवाच - कले कलय मे वाक्यं कोकिलाकलभाषिणि । गृहे यदद्भुतं वस्तु तव मामभिदर्शय

hemāṁgyuvāca - kale kalaya me vākyaṁ kokilākalabhāṣiṇi gṛhe yadadbhutaṁ vastu tava māmabhidarśaya

Hemangi said: 'O Kala, sweet-voiced as the young koel, listen to my words; show me whatever wondrous thing there is in your house.'
