Chapter 220All chaptersChapter 222

Verse 1 (padma.6.221.1)

nārada uvāca ityuktā sā kalā rājaṁstayā nṛpatibhāryayā svakośātsvarṇamaṁjūṣāmānāyya vidadhe puraḥ

Narada said: O king, thus addressed by the king's wife, the maid Kala brought a golden casket from her own store and set it before her.

Verse 2 (padma.6.221.2)

uvāca ca mahārāja bhārye'syāmahadadbhutam pustakaṁ vartate devi tatra citrāṇi saṁti vai

She said, O great king: 'Here, O queen, is a great marvel — a book, and there are pictures in it.'

Verse 3 (padma.6.221.3)

uddhāṭya dṛśyatāṁ kiṁcitkiṁ kimastyatra pustake raṁsyate te mano nūnaṁ tatrasthā lekhyadarśane

Open it and see what is in this book; your heart will surely delight in beholding the pictures there.

Verse 4 (padma.6.221.4)

ityuktvā bhūpapatnī sā dāsyā tāmudaghāṭayat maṁjūṣāṁ tatra saṁsthaṁ ca pustakaṁ pāṇinā'grahīt

So saying, the king's wife had the maidservant open it; the casket lying there, and the book in it, she took in her own hand.

Verse 5 (padma.6.221.5)

tatrāvalokayāmāsa sāvatārāṁsamāsataḥ pūrvaṁ tatastu bhūgolaṁ paṁcāśatkoṭiyojanam

There she looked upon the descents of the Lord in due order — first the sphere of the earth, fifty crore yojanas in extent.

Verse 6 (padma.6.221.6)

tatrāṁdhakārasaṁyuktā bhūmirdṛṣṭātha kāṁcanī etayoraṁtare rāja~llokālokaśca parvataḥ

There she saw a dark-bound region, and beyond it a golden one; between the two lay the mountain Lokaloka.

Verse 7 (padma.6.221.7)

saptadvīpāstato dṛṣṭvā samudraiḥ saptabhirvṛtāḥ eteṣu nadyaḥ śailāśca khaṁḍāni tu mahāmate

Then she saw the seven continents, surrounded by the seven oceans; upon them, O wise one, the rivers, the mountains, and the lands.

Verse 8 (padma.6.221.8)

etadbhāratakhaṁḍaṁ sā paśyaṁtī bhūpatipriyā yamunājāhnavī mukhyā saritaḥ samavaikṣata

Gazing at this land of Bharata, the king's beloved beheld the rivers, chief among them the Yamuna and the Jahnavi (Ganga).

Verse 9 (padma.6.221.9)

yamunātīragaṁ rājaṁniṁdraprasthamidaṁ śubham dadarśa sā mahābhāgā tīrthaṁ vrajayutaṁ nṛpa

On the bank of the Yamuna, O king, she saw this auspicious Indraprastha; that most fortunate lady beheld this sacred place thronging with pilgrims.

Verse 10 (padma.6.221.10)

atra tīrthamidaṁ dṛṣṭvā prayāgaṁ brahmanirmitam pūrvajaṁmakṛtaṁ karma sā sasmāra manasvinī

Seeing this holy place, Prayaga, made by Brahma, that thoughtful woman recalled a deed done in a former birth.

Verse 11 (padma.6.221.11)

tatastūṣṇīṁ samutthāya tūrṇaṁ sā svagṛhaṁ yayau niścityeti na bhokṣyāmi tataḥ prasthāya tīrthakam

Then, rising in silence, she went swiftly to her own house and, resolving 'I shall not eat,' set out for the sacred place.

Verse 12 (padma.6.221.12)

tadaiva sā tu hemāṁgī sahagaṁtumasupriyam vīravarmāṇamāhedaṁ tīrtharājaṁ priyā satī

That very moment the golden-limbed, devoted Hemangi spoke thus to her dear husband Viravarma about going together to the king of sacred places.

Verse 13 (padma.6.221.13)

hemāṁgyuvāca bho bho prāṇapate vākyaṁ madīyaṁ śṛṇu dharmadam vidhehi ca mahābhāga tūrṇaṁ pūrṇo bhaviṣyati

Hemangi said: 'O lord of my life, hear my righteous word; grant it, O most fortunate one, and it shall soon be fulfilled.

Verse 14 (padma.6.221.14)

purāhaṁ mohinī nāma veśyā ca bahupāpakṛt yauvane vārddhake kiṁciddharme jātā matirmama

Long ago I was a courtesan named Mohini, laden with many sins; in my youth, and a little in old age, my mind turned toward dharma.

Verse 15 (padma.6.221.15)

pāpenopārjitāṁ vittaṁ dharmeṇa vyayitaṁ mayā nirddhanāhaṁ yadā rājaṁnirgatā nijapattanāt

What I had earned through sin I spent in acts of righteousness; when I had become penniless, O king, I went out from my own city.

Verse 16 (padma.6.221.16)

tadā māṁ nirjane'raṁye yāṁtī jaghnustu taskarāḥ vṛthā dāridryasaṁtaptā pāpā dhanajighṛkṣayā

Then, as I wandered in a lonely forest, thieves struck me down — wretched, tormented by poverty, sinners greedy for wealth.

Verse 17 (padma.6.221.17)

śitaśastrakṣatāṁgīṁ māṁ śvasaṁtīṁ gatacetanām visṛjya taskarāstatra gatā hatamanorathāḥ

My body wounded by sharp weapons, gasping and losing consciousness, the thieves left me there and went away, their desires unfulfilled.

Verse 18 (padma.6.221.18)

tato vaikhānaso hyekaḥ prayāgasya jalaṁ vahan iṁdraprasthagatasyaiva vane tatra samāgataḥ

Then a hermit, carrying the water of Prayaga, who had come from Indraprastha, arrived there in that forest.

Verse 19 (padma.6.221.19)

tatra māṁ patitāṁ dṛṣṭvā tadavasthāṁ sa tāpasaḥ kā tvaṁ kutaḥ kimarthaṁ vā hatā keneti pṛṣṭavān

Seeing me fallen in that state, that ascetic asked: 'Who are you, from where, for what reason, and by whom have you been struck down?'

Verse 20 (padma.6.221.20)

tadā kimapi noktaṁ me prārthitaṁ puṁyamaṁbu tat tena taṁme mukhe kṣiptaṁ tato'haṁ dehamatyajam

I could say nothing then; I only prayed for that holy water. He poured it into my mouth, and then I gave up my body.

Verse 21 (padma.6.221.21)

prāṇaprayāṇakāle tu vāritatsarvakāmadam śrutveti vāṁcchitavatī mahiṣī syāmiti prabho

At the moment my life was departing, having heard of that water which grants every desire, I wished, O lord: 'May I become a queen.'

Verse 22 (padma.6.221.22)

tasya tīrthāṁbhaso rājaṁprasādātte gṛheśvarī jātāhaṁ satkulācārā śīlayā parayo nidheḥ

By the grace of that water of the sacred place, O king, I was born as your queen, endowed with good family conduct and virtuous character.

Verse 23 (padma.6.221.23)

sāṁprataṁ draṣṭumicchāmi śakraprasthagataṁ nṛpa prayāgaṁ tīrtharājaṁ taṁ bhavatā saha kāmadam

Now, O king, I wish to go with you and see Prayaga, the wish-granting king of sacred places at Shakraprastha (Indraprastha).

Verse 24 (padma.6.221.24)

prasthāsyehaṁ yadā rājan tīrtharājaṁ prati prabho tadāhamaṁnaṁ bhokṣyāmi mayeti vihitaḥ paṇaḥ

When I set out, O king, toward that king of sacred places, only then, O lord, shall I eat — this vow have I made.'

Verse 25 (padma.6.221.25)

rājovāca kathametadvijānīyāṁ tvaduktaṁ calalocane pratītaṁ kuru me bhadre tvaduktaṁ karavāṁyaham

The king said: 'How am I to know this to be true, O fickle-eyed one? Convince me of it, O gentle one, and I shall do as you say.'

Verse 26 (padma.6.221.26)

nārada uvāca ityukte tena bhūpena khe vāgityabhavattadā ākāśavāguvāca satyamuktaṁ vaco rājaṁnanayā tava bhāryayā

Narada said: When the king had spoken thus, a voice arose then in the sky. The voice from the sky said:

Verse 27 (padma.6.221.27)

iṁdraprasthe gate puṁye prayāge tīrthapuṁgave tatra gatvā kuru snānaṁ lapsyase yadyadicchasi

'True is the word spoken to you, O king, by your wife. Having gone to sacred Indraprastha, to Prayaga, foremost of sacred places, go there and bathe, and you shall obtain whatever you desire.'

Verse 28 (padma.6.221.28)

nārada uvāca niśaṁyeti tato vāṇīṁ nṛpo gaganasaṁbhavām daṁḍavatpatito bhūmau tadvaktāraṁ namāṁyaham

Narada said: Hearing that voice arising from the sky, the king fell to the ground like a staff and bowed to the one who had spoken.

Verse 29 (padma.6.221.29)

atha maṁtriṇamāhūya rājyamāropya tatra vai tayā saha samāruhya rathaṁ tīrthavaraṁ yayau

Then, summoning his minister and setting him upon the throne, he mounted a chariot together with her and set out for that greatest of sacred places.

Verse 30 (padma.6.221.30)

katibhirvāsarairatra hemāṁgyā saha āyayau upajahṛ tīrtharāje kṣīraṁ bhāryāyuto nṛpaḥ

After some days he arrived there with Hemangi; the king, together with his wife, offered milk at the king of sacred places.

Verse 31 (padma.6.221.31)

sasnatustau śive tīrthe daṁpatī tatra kāmade prayāge tena vapuṣā vaikuṁṭhaprāptirastu me

There, at that auspicious, wish-granting sacred place, the couple bathed, each praying: 'By this very body, in Prayaga, may I attain Vaikuntha.'

Verse 32 (padma.6.221.32)

pratīcchayā snānamātre mithune tatra bhūpate āgatau suraśārdūlau haṁsapakṣīṁdravāhanau

As the two bathed there with faith, O king, two lordly beings arrived, mounted on kingly birds — the swan and the eagle.

Verse 33 (padma.6.221.33)

āgatau tau samālokya vīravarmā sa bhūpatiḥ praṇaṁya śirasā devau tuṣṭāvaikāgramānasaḥ

Seeing the two arrive, King Viravarma bowed his head to the gods and, with a one-pointed mind, praised them.

Verse 34 (padma.6.221.34)

rājovāca namo vāṁ suraśārdūlau bibhradbhyāmasitāruṇe vapuṣī kṣaumavāsāṁsi hemasiṁdūrabhāni ca

The king said: 'Salutations to you two, foremost among the gods, bearing bodies dark and reddish-golden, clad in silken garments the color of gold and vermilion.

Verse 35 (padma.6.221.35)

vaṁde yuvāṁ satvarajaḥ pradhānau carācarasya sthitisargahetū vaikuṁṭhasatyādbhutalokanāthau caturdvibāhū khagarājavāhau

I bow to you two, embodiments of sattva and rajas, the cause of the creation and preservation of all that moves and moves not, lords of the true, wondrous worlds of Vaikuntha, four-armed and two-armed, borne by the king of birds.

Verse 36 (padma.6.221.36)

vairāgyasaṁrāgavatāṁ janānāṁ saṁmuktibhuktipratipādikau ca vṛṁdārake vaṁditapādapadmau sadbhāvanaṁreṇa namāmi mūrdhnā

To you two, who grant liberation and enjoyment to men of dispassion and passion alike, whose worshipped lotus feet the celestials adore, with a head bowed in true devotion I offer my salutations.

Verse 37 (padma.6.221.37)

O Govinda, whose feet the celestials worship, no one truly knows your real nature, for you are beyond both matter (prakriti) and the individual soul (purusha), utterly beyond the reach of mind and speech.

Verse 38 (padma.6.221.38)

dhaṁyaḥ saloke puruṣaḥ parātmaṁyo viśvametatkṣaṇikaṁ viciṁtya anaṁyacetā bhajati tvadīya pādāraviṁdaṁ munivṛṁdavaṁdyam

Blessed indeed in this world is that man who, reflecting that this universe is fleeting, worships with an undivided heart your lotus feet, adored by hosts of sages.

Verse 39 (padma.6.221.39)

tvatpādasevanaṁnāma tīrthametacca durlabham janānāṁ bhajamānānāṁ vāṁchitārthaphalapradam

This service at your feet is itself a sacred place, rare indeed, granting to devoted men the fruit of every desire.

Verse 40 (padma.6.221.40)

tathāpyetaddvayaṁ sevyaṁ muktaye nāṁyalabdhaye aṁyakāmanayā yastu sevate sa tu vaṁcitaḥ

Yet these two — sacred place and devotion to you — should be served for liberation alone, not for any other gain; whoever serves them out of some other desire is indeed cheated.

Verse 41 (padma.6.221.41)

saṁto bhavaṁtamāsevya tīrthametacca muktidam nāṁyamicchaṁtyatikraṁya sarvalokāṁjijīṣavaḥ

The good, having served you and this liberation-granting sacred place, desire nothing else, seeking to rise above all worlds.'

Verse 42 (padma.6.221.42)

nārada uvāca ityabhiṣṭūya deveśaṁ lokeśaṁ sa ca bhūpatiḥ tasthau yadā tadā rājaṁhemāṁgī sā jagāda ha

Narada said: Having thus praised the Lord of the gods, the Lord of the worlds, when the king had fallen silent, Hemangi then spoke.

Verse 43 (padma.6.221.43)

padmāpate padmapalāśalocana brahmaṁkarālāsana bhāratī guro namo yuvābhyāṁ yadi dīnacetase prasīdatāṁ tārayatāṁ bhavābdheḥ

'O lord of Lakshmi, O lotus-petal-eyed one; O Brahma seated on the fearsome seat, O lord of speech — salutations to you both. If you are pleased with one so humble-hearted, may you deliver us across the ocean of existence.

Verse 44 (padma.6.221.44)

tīrthasyāsya prasādena jātāhaṁ mahiṣī prabho yuvayordarśanaṁ jātaṁ devānāmapi durlabham

By the grace of this sacred place I became a queen, O lord; the sight of you two is rare even for the gods.

Verse 45 (padma.6.221.45)

yuvāmakhilacittajṁau dattaṁ nau mānasepsitam snānakāle yadāvābhyāṁ vihitaṁ pāramārthikam

You two, knowers of every heart, have granted us what our minds desired — that which, at the time of bathing, you both ordained for our highest good.'

Verse 46 (padma.6.221.46)

evaṁ tābhyāmubhābhyāṁ tau saṁstutau devapuṁgavau prasaṁnavadanau bhūtvā procaturdaṁpatī prati

Thus praised by the two of them together, those two foremost of gods, their faces gladdened, spoke to the royal couple.

Verse 47 (padma.6.221.47)

haribrahmāṇāvūcatuḥ dhaṁyā tvamasi hemāṁgi yato'yaṁ tāritaḥ patiḥ tvayā rājyasukhāsakta cittopyetatsamāgamāt

Hari and Brahma said: 'Blessed are you, Hemangi, for through you your husband has been delivered — though his heart was attached to the pleasures of kingship, even so, through this meeting.

Verse 48 (padma.6.221.48)

rājṁāṁ viṣayasaktānāṁ durlabhā muktirīdṛśī tvadbharturyādṛśī jātā tīrthasyāsya prasādataḥ

For kings attached to worldly enjoyments, liberation such as this is rare; yet such has befallen your husband, by the grace of this sacred place.'

Verse 49 (padma.6.221.49)

nārada uvāca ityuktvā tau samālokya garuḍaṁ pakṣipuṁgavam jagmatustau suraśreṣṭhau satyalokaṁ nareśvara

Narada said: Having spoken thus, and having looked upon Garuda, king of birds, those two greatest of gods, O lord of men, set out for Satyaloka.

Verse 50 (padma.6.221.50)

tatra te brahmaṇā sarve pūjitā vidhivaṁnṛpa tasya cittānurodhena tasthurekaṁ muhūrtakam

There all were duly honored by Brahma, O king; and, in deference to his wish, they remained there for a single muhurta.

Verse 51 (padma.6.221.51)

atha tābhyāmubhābhyāṁ sa daṁpatībhyāṁ samaṁ hariḥ āruhya garuḍaṁ śrīmadvaikuṁṭhamagamaṁnṛpa

Then, together with that royal couple, Hari mounted Garuda and went, O king, to glorious Vaikuntha.

Verse 52 (padma.6.221.52)

ityetatkathitaṁ tubhyaṁ tīrtharājasya vaibhavam puṁyaṁ samastapāpaghnaṁ yaśasyaṁ sutadaṁ nṛpa

Thus has been told to you, O king, the glory of this king of sacred places — meritorious, destroying all sin, bringing fame, and granting sons.

Verse 53 (padma.6.221.53)

ya etacchṛṇuyāṁnityaṁ paṭhedapi ca mānavaḥ sa gacchedvāṁchitaṁ sthānaṁ satyametaṁmayoditam

Whoever hears this constantly, or even recites it, that person attains the place he desires — this is truth that I have spoken.
