dvitīyāvaraṇaṁ proktaṁ vaikuṁṭhasya śubhāhvayam matsyakūrmādilokāstu tṛtīyāvaraṇaṁ śubham

declared to be the second, auspicious enclosure of Vaikuntha. The worlds of Matsya, Kurma, and the other avataras are the third, auspicious enclosure.

Verse 60 (padma.6.228.60)

satyācyutānaṁta durgā viṣvaksena gajānanāḥ śaṁkhapadmanidhīlokāścaturthāvaraṇaṁ śubham

The worlds of Satya, Achyuta, Ananta, Durga, Vishvaksena, Ganesha, and the treasures Shankha and Padma are the fourth, auspicious enclosure.

Verse 61 (padma.6.228.61)

ṛgyajuḥ sāmātharvāṇo lokā dikṣu mahatsu ca sāvitryā vihageśasya dharmasya ca makhasya ca

The worlds of the Rig, Yajus, Sama, and Atharva Vedas, in the great directions, and of Savitri, of Garuda, of Dharma, and of the sacrifice —

Verse 62 (padma.6.228.62)

paṁcamāvaraṇaṁ proktamakṣayaṁ sarvavāṁmayam śaṁkhacakragadāpadmakhaḍgaśārṁgahalaṁ tathā

this is declared to be the fifth enclosure, imperishable, composed of all sacred speech. The worlds of the conch, discus, mace, lotus, sword, Sharnga bow, and plough,

Verse 63 (padma.6.228.63)

mauśalaṁ ca tathā lokāḥ sarvaśastrāstrasaṁyutāḥ ṣaṣṭhamāvaraṇaṁ proktaṁ maṁtrāstramayamakṣaram

and of the pestle-weapon, and all worlds endowed with weapons and missiles — this is declared to be the sixth enclosure, imperishable, composed of mantra-weapons.

Verse 64 (padma.6.228.64)

aiṁdra pāvakayāṁyāni nairṛtaṁ vāruṇaṁ tathā vāyavyaṁ sauṁyamaiśānaṁ saptamaṁ munibhiḥ smṛtam

The worlds of Indra, Agni, Yama, Nirriti, Varuna, Vayu, Soma, and Ishana — this is remembered by the sages as the seventh.

Verse 65 (padma.6.228.65)

sādhyā marudgaṇāścaiva viśvedevāstathaiva ca nityāḥ sarve pare dhāṁni ye cāṁye ca divaukasaḥ

The Sadhyas, the hosts of Maruts, and likewise the Vishvedevas, and whatever other celestials there are — all are eternal in that supreme abode.

Verse 66 (padma.6.228.66)

te vai prākṛtalokesmiṁna nityāstridaśeśvarāḥ te ha nākaṁ mahimānaḥ sacaṁta iti vai śrutiḥ

But the lords of the thirty gods are not eternal in this material world. 'They partake of that heaven, those of glory' — thus indeed says the Shruti.

Verse 67 (padma.6.228.67)

evaṁ paraṁ padaṁ nityairmuktairbhogaparāyaṇaiḥ divyābhirmahiṣībhiśca rājate vibhurīśvaraḥ

Thus the supreme abode, with its eternal, liberated ones devoted to His enjoyment, and with his divine queens, is ruled over by the all-pervading Lord.

Verse 68 (padma.6.228.68)

na tadbhāsayate sūryo na śaṁśāṁko na pāvakaḥ yadgatvā na nivarttaṁte yoginaḥ saṁśitavratāḥ

Neither the sun illumines it, nor the moon, nor fire; having gone there, yogis of firm vows do not return.

Verse 69 (padma.6.228.69)

Those who are established solely in the Dvaya mantra go to that imperishable place — not through Vedic study and sacrifice, not through gifts, not through auspicious vows,

Verse 70 (padma.6.228.70)

na tapobhirnirāhārairna ca sādhanakarmabhiḥ ekena dvayamaṁtreṇa tathā bhaktyā tvanaṁyathā

not through fasting austerities, nor through other ritual practices — but by the one Dvaya mantra alone, together with devotion, and not otherwise.

Verse 71 (padma.6.228.71)

tadgaṁyaṁ śāśvataṁ sthānaṁ prapattyā vai sanātanam pārvatyuvāca sādhūktaṁ paramaṁ svargasvarūpaṁ bhavatā prabho

That eternal, everlasting abode is reachable through surrender alone. Parvati said: Well have you declared, O lord, the true nature of the supreme heaven.

Verse 72 (padma.6.228.72)

paravyoṁni sthito nityaṁ kathaṁ prakṛtimaṁḍale sthitavāṁkiṁ nimittena līlayā kiṁ prayojanam

But how, though eternally situated in the supreme heaven, did he also come to be situated in the sphere of Prakriti? For what reason, by what play, and to what purpose?

Verse 73 (padma.6.228.73)

śuddhasatvamaye loke saṁsthitaḥ parameśvaraḥ kathaṁ rajastamomiśra vibhūtyā sthivāṁprabhuḥ

The Supreme Lord dwells in a world of pure sattva — how then did that master come to dwell in a glory mixed with rajas and tamas?

Verse 74 (padma.6.228.74)

rudra uvāca tripādvibhūtau bhagavānīśvaryyā parameśvaraḥ nityamuktyaikabhogyo'sau modate satataṁ vibhuḥ

Rudra said: In the three-quarter glory, the Lord, the Supreme, together with his consort, ever enjoyed solely by the eternally liberated, that all-pervading one, rejoices continually.

Verse 75 (padma.6.228.75)

tamīśvaraṁ mahāmāyā prakṛtirjagadāśrayā kṛtāṁjalipuṭā bhūtvā tuṣṭāva parameśvaram

Once, Mahamaya, Prakriti, the refuge of the universe, joining her palms in reverence, praised that Supreme Lord.

Verse 76 (padma.6.228.76)

mahāmāyovāca namaste trijagaddhāṁne namaste viśvarūpiṇe purāṇāya namastubhyaṁ jagadutpattihetave

Mahamaya said: Salutations to you, the abode of the three worlds; salutations to you, of universal form. Salutations to you, the ancient one, the cause of the origin of the universe.

To the imperishable one who yet appears as a modification, of pure-sattva nature; salutations again and again to you, whose form is without beginning, middle, or end.

Salutations to Sankarshana, to Rudra, to the sustainer of all beings; to Hayagriva, to the blazing one, to Time, to Hari. Salutations to you, the Person of sacrifice, of the form of oblations to gods and ancestors.

Verse 83 (padma.6.228.83)

Salutations to you, beyond the gunas, dwelling within the self of all; salutations to that Vishnu, the unmanifest, the witness of the worlds.

Verse 87 (padma.6.228.87)

tvameva sarvalokānāmāśrayaḥ puruṣottamaḥ prasīda devadeveśa sarvalokahitāya vai

You alone are the refuge of all the worlds, Purushottama. Be gracious, O lord of the gods of gods, for the welfare of all the worlds.

Verse 92 (padma.6.228.92)

matsaṁsthāścetanāssarve nirādhārā nirāśrayāḥ hīnadehā nirākārāḥ sarveṁdriyavivarjitāḥ

All the conscious beings residing in me are without support, without refuge, without bodies, formless, devoid of all senses,

Verse 93 (padma.6.228.93)

sarvānuṣṭhānarahitāḥ satataṁ duḥkhabhoginaḥ teṣāṁ lokāṁśca dehāṁśca dātumarhasi keśava

devoid of all capacity for religious observance, constantly suffering. You should grant them worlds and bodies, O Keshava.

Verse 94 (padma.6.228.94)

līlāvibhūtiṁ sarvajṁa yathāpūrvaṁ prakalpaya cetanācetanaṁ kṛtsnaṁ jagatsthāvarajaṁgamam

Fashion again, O all-knowing one, the glory of your play as before — the entire universe, conscious and unconscious, moving and unmoving.

Verse 95 (padma.6.228.95)

mayā saṁmohitaṁ paśya līlārthaṁparameśvara prākṛtāṁḍaṁ mayā sārdhaṁ sṛjasva puruṣottama

Behold this all as deluded by me, for the sake of play, O Supreme Lord. Create the material cosmic egg together with me, O Purushottama.

Verse 96 (padma.6.228.96)

dharṁmādharṁmau sukhaṁ duḥkhaṁ tasmiṁnikṣipya saṁsṛtau māmadhiṣṭhāya līlāṁ vai kartumarhasi mā ciram

Having placed dharma and adharma, pleasure and pain, within that worldly existence, presiding over me, you should perform your play — do not delay.

Verse 97 (padma.6.228.97)

śrīmahādeva uvāca evamuktastayā devyā māyayā parameśvaraḥ tasyāṁ niveśya māyāyāṁ jagatsraṣṭuṁ pracakrame

Shri Mahadeva said: Thus addressed by that goddess Maya, the Supreme Lord, having entered into that Maya, began to create the universe.

Verse 98 (padma.6.228.98)

yo'sau prakṛtipuruṣaḥ procyate sa ihācyutaḥ sa eva bhagavāṁviṣṇuḥ prakṛtyāṁ praviveśa ha

He who is called the Purusha of Prakriti — that is the imperishable one here; and that very glorious Vishnu entered into Prakriti.

Verse 99 (padma.6.228.99)

asṛjatprakṛtau brahmabhūtādimahadāśrayam mahataḥ puruṣādasmādahaṁkāro'bhyajāyata

He created within Prakriti the Mahat, the support of all elemental existence. From this Mahat, derived from the Person, the ego was born.

Verse 100 (padma.6.228.100)

ahaṁkārāttu vai tasmādguṇatrayamajāyata tribhyo guṇebhyastaṁmātrāmasṛjadviśvabhāvanaḥ

From that ahamkara, indeed, the three gunas arose. From the three gunas, the creator of the universe created the subtle elements.

Verse 101 (padma.6.228.101)

taṁmātrebhyobhyajāyaṁta mahābhūtāni tatkṣaṇāt oṁkāraḥ prathamaṁ jāto brahmaṇastriguṇātmanaḥ

From the tanmatras, the gross elements were born at that very instant. The syllable Om was the first thing born from Brahman, of three-fold nature.

Verse 102 (padma.6.228.102)

ākāśādabhavadvāyurvāyoragnirajāyata agnerāpaḥ samudbhūtā adbhyaśca pṛthivī matā

From ether came air; from air, fire was born; from fire, water arose; and from water, the earth is held to have arisen.

Verse 103 (padma.6.228.103)

ākāśādīni bhūtāni sṛṣṭāṁyekottarāṇi vai śabdasparśaśca rūpaṁ ca raso gaṁdhaśca tadguṇāḥ

The elements beginning with ether were created, each with one quality more than the last — sound, touch, form, taste, and smell are their respective cumulative qualities.

Verse 104 (padma.6.228.104)

ekottaraguṇāṁsṛṣṭvā tānādāya mahāprabhuḥ teṣāṁ vimiśraṇaṁ kṛtvā jagadaṁḍaṁ mahattaram asṛjattatralāṁvai saṁkhyayā ye caturdaśa

Having created these elements with their successively increasing qualities, and having taken them, the great Lord, blending them together, created the great cosmic egg, and within it the fourteen worlds by number.

Verse 105 (padma.6.228.105)

brahmāditridaśāṁstasmiṁnasṛjatpuruṣottamaḥ daivatiryyaktathā martyaṁ sthāvaraṁ ca caturvvidham

Within it, Purushottama created Brahma and the thirty gods, and the four kinds of beings — divine, animal, human, and immobile.

Verse 106 (padma.6.228.106)

tathā sṛṣṭo mahāsargaṁtena vai jalajekṣaṇe tatra karmānurūpeṇa tridaśādiṣu yoniṣu

Thus was the great creation made by Him, O lotus-eyed one. There, according to their karma, in the wombs beginning with those of the gods,

Verse 107 (padma.6.228.107)

saṁsthitāḥ prakṛtau pūrva ātmanaḥ prabhavaṁti hi

souls who had previously abided within Prakriti come forth into being.
