The Description of Vishnu's Fourfold Vyuha

Chapter 228All chaptersChapter 230

Verse 1 (padma.6.229.1)

pārvatyuvāca vistareṇa mamākhyāhi devasargamanuttamam brahmādi tridivaśreṣṭhāḥ kathaṁ jātāḥ sanātanāḥ īśvarasyāvatārāṁśca vistareṇa vadasva me

Parvati said: Tell me in detail the supreme creation of the gods; how were Brahma and the other eternal chiefs of the three heavens born? Tell me in detail also the incarnations of the Lord.

Verse 2 (padma.6.229.2)

rudra uvāca ākāśānilatejoṁbu bhuvaḥ sṛṣṭā yathākramam tāsāṁ madhye'sṛjadbrahmā agādhajalamarṇavam

Rudra said: Ether, air, fire, water, and earth were created in due order; among them Brahma created the fathomless ocean of water.

Verse 3 (padma.6.229.3)

asmiṁnekārṇavībhūte jalamāyāvaṭacchade ādāya sarvvabhūtāni yoganidrāṁ yayau hariḥ

In this, when it had become a single ocean, with the water covered by the canopy of maya, Hari, having taken in all beings, went into yoga-sleep.

Verse 4 (padma.6.229.4)

sa jagatsraṣṭukāmastu yoganidrāmupeyivān tayā reme ciraṁ kālaṁ māyayā madhusūdanaḥ

He, desiring to create the universe, entered yoga-sleep; by that maya, Madhusudana sported for a long time.

Verse 5 (padma.6.229.5)

tasyāṁ tu janayāmāsa kālātmānamanuttamam kalākāṣṭhādi bhūtā ye pakṣamāsādirūpiṇaḥ

In that sleep he generated the supreme essence of Time — the kalas, kashthas and the rest, in the forms of the fortnight, month, and so on.

Verse 6 (padma.6.229.6)

tasmiṁkāle harerṁnābhipaṁkajaṁ mukulākṛti vikasatsarvajagato bījabhūtaṁ suvarcasam

At that time, from Hari's navel, a lotus, bud-shaped, blossoming as the seed of the entire universe, radiant —

Verse 7 (padma.6.229.7)

udasthādudabhūttatra brahmā ca sumahāmatiḥ sa jagatsraṣṭukāmastu rajoguṇavicoditaḥ tuṣṭāva yoganidrāyāṁ śayānaṁ parameśvaram

— arose there, and from it was born Brahma, of very great intellect. He, desiring to create the universe, impelled by rajas, praised the Supreme Lord lying in yoga-sleep.

Verse 8 (padma.6.229.8)

brahmovāca namostu viṣṇave tubhyaṁ sargasthityaṁtahetave jagadbhūṣaṇabhūṣāya śrīmate viśvarūpiṇe

Brahma said: Salutation to you, Vishnu, cause of creation, maintenance, and destruction; the ornament of the universe's ornaments, glorious, of universal form.

Verse 9 (padma.6.229.9)

namo brahmaṁyadevāya gobrāhmaṇahitāya ca jagaddhitāya kṛṣṇāya goviṁdāya namonamaḥ

Salutation to the god devoted to Brahmins, the benefactor of cows and Brahmins; salutation again and again to Krishna, Govinda, benefactor of the world.

Verse 10 (padma.6.229.10)

pradhānakālarūpāya puruṣāyeśvarāya ca namaḥ prapaṁcarūpāya niṣprapaṁcasvarūpiṇe

Salutation to you of the form of Pradhana and Time, the Person, the Lord; salutation to you of the form of the manifest world, yet of unmanifest nature.

Verse 11 (padma.6.229.11)

nārāyaṇāya viśvāya viśveśāya namonamaḥ śrībhūlīlādhipataye brahmaṇe paramātmane

Salutation again and again to Narayana, the universe, the lord of the universe; to Brahman, the Supreme Self, the lord of the sport of Shri and Bhu.

Verse 12 (padma.6.229.12)

namostu vāsudevāya viśvarūpāya śārṁgiṇe trayīnāthāya haraye viśvanāthasvarūpiṇe

Salutation to Vasudeva, of universal form, wielder of the Sharnga bow; to Hari, lord of the three Vedas, of the nature of the lord of the universe.

Verse 13 (padma.6.229.13)

anaṁtakalyāṇaguṇaparipūrṇāya te namaḥ jagacca sarvvaṁ svapiti tvayi supte jagaṁmaye

Salutation to you, full of endless auspicious qualities. When you, comprising the universe, sleep, the entire universe sleeps too.

Verse 14 (padma.6.229.14)

vṛtaṁ sarvaṁ jagaṁnātha prapaṁce sacarācaram tvameva kāraṇaṁ karttā kāryyaṁ ca triguṇodbhavam

This entire universe, moving and unmoving, O lord of the universe, is enveloped in the manifest world. You alone are the cause, the agent, and the effect born of the three gunas.

Verse 15 (padma.6.229.15)

sraṣṭā dhyātā vidhātā ca tvameva parameśvaraḥ jāgarṣiśuddhasatvasthastavanidrā kutaḥprabho devatvayi sthitālokāḥ samādhiṣṭhāḥ sanātanāḥ

You alone are the creator, the meditator, and the ordainer, the Supreme Lord. Waking, situated in pure sattva — whence, O lord, is your sleep? The worlds situated in you are eternal, held in a state of trance.

Verse 16 (padma.6.229.16)

śiva uvāca evamukto hṛṣīkeśo brahmaṇā parameśvaraḥ uttasthau śayanāttasmādvimukto yoganidrayā

Shiva said: Thus addressed by Brahma, Hrishikesha, the Supreme Lord, rose from that couch, freed from yoga-sleep.

Verse 17 (padma.6.229.17)

niyaṁya yoganidrāṁ tāṁ jagatsraṣṭuṁ pracakrame aciṁtyastatkṣaṇāddevo jagatāṁ prabhuracyutaḥ

Restraining that yoga-sleep, he began to create the universe. That inconceivable god, the imperishable master of the worlds, instantly —

Verse 18 (padma.6.229.18)

ciṁtayitvā jagatsarvamasṛjatsa pumāṁstataḥ lokāṁsarvvāṁstadā hyapsu gatamaṁḍaṁ hiraṁmayam

— having contemplated the entire universe, that Person then created all the worlds; then the golden cosmic egg, having gone into the waters,

Verse 19 (padma.6.229.19)

saptadvīpāṁsamudrāṁtāṁmedinī bhūdharairyutān sahaikāṁḍakaṭāhena nābhipadme'sṛjatprabhuḥ

— with its seven continents ending in oceans, the earth with its mountains, together with the shell of the single egg, he created in his navel-lotus.

Verse 20 (padma.6.229.20)

tadaṁḍamadhye cāsthānamīśvaraḥ kṛtavāṁhariḥ atha nārāyaṇaṁkastu dadhyāvadhyātmacetasā

Within that egg, Hari, the Lord, made his own abode. Then he meditated upon Narayana with an inward-turned mind.

Verse 21 (padma.6.229.21)

dhyānāṁte tasya bhālāttu svedabiṁdurajāyata sa biṁdurbudbudākāraḥ pṛthivyāmapatatkṣaṇāt

At the end of that meditation, a drop of sweat arose from his brow. That drop, bubble-shaped, fell upon the earth in an instant.

Verse 22 (padma.6.229.22)

tasmāttu budbudātso'hamutpaṁnosmi varānane tryakṣastriśūlahasto'haṁ jaṭāmukuṭamaṁḍitaḥ

From that very bubble I was born, O fair-faced one. Three-eyed, trident in hand, adorned with a matted-hair crown —

Verse 23 (padma.6.229.23)

kiṁkaromīti deveśamavocaṁ vinayāṁvitaḥ tato nārāyaṇo devo māmityāha mudāṁvitaḥ

— I asked the Lord of the gods, humbly, 'What shall I do?' Then the god Narayana, delighted, said to me:

Verse 24 (padma.6.229.24)

karttāsi jagato rudra saṁhāraṁ bhīmadarśanam sākṣātsaṁkarṣaṇāṁśena saṁhārārthe varānane

'You are the doer, O Rudra, of the fearsome destruction of the universe' — I was born directly from a portion of Sankarshana, O fair one, for the purpose of destruction.

Verse 25 (padma.6.229.25)

tasmāṁnārāyaṇāddevi utpaṁnosmi bhayaṁkaraḥ niyojya māṁ tu saṁhāre punareva janārdanaḥ

Therefore, O goddess, I, the fearsome one, was born from that Narayana. Having appointed me to destruction, Janardana again —

Verse 26 (padma.6.229.26)

netrābhyāmasṛjaccaṁdrasūryyau dhvāṁtāpahāriṇau vāyuṁ diśaśca śrotrābhyāmiṁdrāgnīmukhato'sṛjat

— from his two eyes created the moon and sun, dispellers of darkness; the wind and the directions from his ears; Indra and Agni from his mouth.

Verse 27 (padma.6.229.27)

nāsābhyāṁ varuṇaṁ mitramasṛjatpaṁkajekṣaṇaḥ bāhubhyāmakhilāṁdevāṁsasādhyāṁsamarudgaṇān

From his nostrils, the lotus-eyed one created Varuna and Mitra; from his arms, all the gods together with the Sadhyas and the host of Maruts.

Verse 28 (padma.6.229.28)

samastaromakūpebhyo ratnāṁyoṣadhayastathā tvaci śailāṁsamudrāśca gavādyāḥ paśavastathā

From all his pores, gems and herbs; from his skin, mountains and oceans; and cattle and other animals likewise.

Verse 29 (padma.6.229.29)

mukhato brāhmaṇaḥ sṛṣṭo bāhubhyāṁ kṣatriyastathā ūrvvorvaiśyastataḥ padbhyāṁ śūdraścaivamajāyata

From his mouth the brahmin was created; from his arms, the kshatriya; from his thighs, the vaishya; and from his feet, the shudra was thus born.

Verse 30 (padma.6.229.30)

evaṁ sṛṣṭvā jagatsarvvamacetanamavasthitam viśvarūpeṇa deveśo yasyāṁtaramadhiṣṭhitaḥ

Having thus created the entire universe, which remains inert without him. The Lord of the gods, of universal form, within whom all this abides —

Verse 31 (padma.6.229.31)

śaktyā vinā harestasya noṁmeṣo vidyate yataḥ tasmātsarvajagatprāṇo viṣṇureva sanātanaḥ

— for without the power of that Hari there is no manifestation of anything. Therefore the eternal Vishnu alone is the life-breath of the entire universe.

Verse 32 (padma.6.229.32)

sa evāvyaktarūpaḥ saṁparamātmā vyavasthitaḥ sargasthitilayaṁ brahmā svayameva pravarttate

He alone, though of unmanifest form, abides as the Supreme Self. Brahma himself carries out creation, maintenance, and dissolution.

Verse 33 (padma.6.229.33)

ṣāḍguṁyaparipūrṇo'sau vāsudevaḥ sanātanaḥ triguṇādātmanorūpaṁ caturddhā kurute jagat

This eternal Vasudeva, full of the six-fold glory, from the three gunas of his own self, makes the universe fourfold.

Verse 34 (padma.6.229.34)

pradyuṁnamūrttirbhagavāṁsarvaiśvaryyasamaṁvitaḥ vidheḥ prajāpatīnāṁ ca kālasya ca janasya ca

In the form of Pradyumna, the Lord, endowed with all lordship, governs Vidhi, the Prajapatis, Time, and beings —

Verse 35 (padma.6.229.35)

aṁtaryyāmitvamāpaṁno sargaṁ saṁyakkaroti hi setihāsāṁstato vedāṁdadau tasmai mahātmane

— having become their indwelling controller, he properly effects creation. He then gave the Itihasas and the Vedas to that great soul.

Verse 36 (padma.6.229.36)

pradyuṁnasyāṁśabhāgo'sau brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ jagatsargasthitiṁ sarvvaṁ prakarotyaṁśasaṁbhavaḥ

Brahma, the grandfather of the worlds, is a portion of Pradyumna; born of that portion, he effects the entire creation and maintenance of the universe.

Verse 37 (padma.6.229.37)

aniruddhaśca bhagavāṁchaktitejaḥ samaṁvitaḥ manūnāṁ pārthivānāṁ ca kālasya ca janasya ca

And the glorious Aniruddha, endowed with power and radiance, governs the Manus, kings, Time, and beings —

Verse 38 (padma.6.229.38)

sthitiṁ karoti bhagavānaṁtaryyāmitvamāsthitaḥ saṁkarṣaṇo mahāviṣṇurvidyābalasamaṁvitaḥ

— the Lord effects their maintenance, having become their indwelling controller. Sankarshana, the great Vishnu, endowed with knowledge and strength —

Verse 39 (padma.6.229.39)

kālasya sarvabhūtānāṁ rudrasya ca yamasya ca aṁtaryyāmitvamāsthāya jagatsaṁharate prabhuḥ

— having become the indwelling controller of Time, of all beings, of Rudra, and of Yama, the Lord destroys the universe.

Verse 40 (padma.6.229.40)

ityaṁtaryyāṁyavasthāyāmaṁtaryyāmitvamātmanaḥ matsyaḥ kūrṁmo varāhaśca narasiṁho'tha vāmanaḥ

Thus, in the state of being the indweller, these are the self's states of indwelling. Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, then Vamana,

Verse 41 (padma.6.229.41)

rāmo rāmaśca kṛṣṇaśca buddhaḥ kalkī ca te daśa ete tu vibhavāvasthā brahmaṇaḥ paramātmanaḥ

Rama, Rama, Krishna, Buddha, and Kalki — these ten. These are the manifest incarnate states of Brahman, the Supreme Self.

Verse 42 (padma.6.229.42)

nṛsiṁharāmakṛṣṇeṣu ṣāḍguṁyaṁ parikīrtitam parāvasthā tu devasya dīpādutpaṁna dīpavat

In Narasimha, Rama, and Krishna the full six-fold glory is declared. But the transcendent state of the god is like a lamp lit from a lamp.

Verse 43 (padma.6.229.43)

sā hyavasthā harerasya śṛṇuṣva girije śubhe vaikuṁṭhaṁ paramaṁ lokaṁ viṣṇulokamanuttamam

That state of Hari — hear it, O auspicious Girija. Vaikuntha, the supreme world, the unsurpassed world of Vishnu;

Verse 44 (padma.6.229.44)

śvetadīpaṁ svarūpaṁ tu kṣīrasāgaramuttamam evaṁ caturddhā vyūhaṁ tu saṁyaguktaṁ maharṣibhiḥ

Shvetadvipa, of that same nature; and the excellent Ocean of Milk — thus fourfold is the vyuha, well declared by the great sages.

Verse 45 (padma.6.229.45)

jalāvaraṇamadhye tu vaikuṁṭhaṁ kāraṇaṁ śubham koṭivaiśvānaraprakhyaṁ sarvaṁ dharṁmavadavyayam

In the midst of the enveloping waters, Vaikuntha, the cause, auspicious, blazing like millions of fires, entirely like dharma, undecaying —

Verse 46 (padma.6.229.46)

āmodamaṁdārakarairvṛkṣairvahnibhirāsthitam nānāmaṇimayaṁ divyaṁ vimānakoṭibhiryyutam

— filled with fragrant Mandara trees and with sacrificial fires, made of many jewels, divine, furnished with millions of celestial chariots.

Verse 47 (padma.6.229.47)

yaduktaṁ paramaṁ dhāma tādṛklakṣaṇasaṁsthitam tasmiṁvaikuṁṭhanagare nānāratnasamujjvale

That which was declared as the supreme abode, of such described characteristics — in that Vaikuntha city, brilliant with various gems,

Verse 48 (padma.6.229.48)

madhye devajayārāmaṁ puraṁ raṁyamanuttamam caturdvārasamāyuktaṁ hemaprākāratoraṇam

— in its midst is the beautiful, unsurpassed city called Devajayarama, furnished with four gates, golden ramparts and archways,

Verse 49 (padma.6.229.49)

caṁḍādidvārapālādyaiḥ kumudādyaiśca rakṣitam nānāmaṇimayairdivyairgṛhaiḥ paṁktibhirāvṛtam

— guarded by gatekeepers beginning with Chanda and Kumuda, surrounded by rows of houses made of various divine gems,

Verse 50 (padma.6.229.50)

vitataṁ paṁcapadmābhiryojanaiśca samaṁtataḥ sahasrayojanottuṁgaiḥ prāsādaiḥ koṭibhirvṛtam

— extending five padmas of yojanas on every side, surrounded by millions of palaces a thousand yojanas high,

Verse 51 (padma.6.229.51)

ārūḍhayauvanairddivyaiḥ puṁbhiḥ strībhiśca śobhitam striyaśca puruṣāścāsmiṁsarvalakṣaṇaśobhitāḥ

— adorned with divine men and women in the flower of youth. And in it, men and women adorned with every auspicious mark,

Verse 52 (padma.6.229.52)

samarūpāśca śrīviṣṇoḥ sarvvālaṁkārabhūṣitāḥ divyasragvastrasaṁchaṁnā divyacaṁdanabhūṣitāḥ

— of forms like Shri Vishnu's own, adorned with every ornament, clothed in divine garlands and garments, adorned with divine sandal paste,

Verse 53 (padma.6.229.53)

modaṁte tatra deveśa bhaktyā tvātmamanorame maṁtrāṣṭākṣarasaṁsiddhā bhaktyā ṣoḍaśarūpayā

— rejoice there, O lord of the gods, with devotion, in that place delightful to the self. Accomplished through the eight-syllabled mantra, through devotion in its sixteen forms,

Verse 54 (padma.6.229.54)

vṛtāstatpadamāviśya modaṁte manasīpsitam gatvāsmiṁna nivartaṁte viṣṇunā saha saṁsthitāḥ

— surrounded by such devotees, having entered that abode, they rejoice as their minds desire. Having gone there, they do not return, being established together with Vishnu.

Verse 55 (padma.6.229.55)

avicchiṁnātmanā te vai viṣṇunā saṁgatāḥ śubhāḥ tatsamānasukhaṁ nityaṁ prāpnuvaṁti manīṣiṇaḥ

Auspicious ones, united with Vishnu with an unbroken selfhood, the wise attain an eternal happiness equal to His own.

Verse 56 (padma.6.229.56)

yatratatra harerlokānāviśya śubhacetasaḥ prāpnuvaṁti punaḥ svargaṁ svargasthāiva jaṁtavaḥ

Wherever devotees of pure mind enter Hari's worlds, they attain heaven again and again, like beings dwelling in heaven.

Verse 57 (padma.6.229.57)

yathā saumitri bharatau yathā saṁkarṣaṇādayaḥ tathā tepi ca jāyaṁte satyaloke yathecchayā

As Saumitri and Bharata, as Sankarshana and the others, so they too are born in Satyaloka, as they wish,
