Verse 1 (padma.6.237.1)

śrīrudra uvāca hiraṇyaka hiraṇyākṣau kāśyapeyau mahābalau ditiputrau mahāvīryyau sarvvadaityapatī ubhau

Shri Rudra said: Hiranyakashipu and Hiranyaksha, sons of Kashyapa and Diti, of great strength and great valor — both were lords of all the daityas.

Verse 2 (padma.6.237.2)

nāmnā tau jayavijayau śvetadvīpe hariṁ gatau tasminpraviṣṭayogīndrānsanakādīnmahābalau

In an earlier birth, by the names Jaya and Vijaya, they had gone to Hari in Shvetadvipa. There, those two mighty gatekeepers obstructed the great yogis Sanaka and his brothers —

Verse 3 (padma.6.237.3)

vārayāmāsaturdevi harisaṁdarśanotsukān taiḥ praśaptau mahāvīryyau dvārapālau surottamau

who were eager for the sight of Hari, O Goddess. By them, those two mighty gatekeepers, best among the gods, were cursed.

Verse 4 (padma.6.237.4)

sanakādaya ūcuḥ utsṛjya tatpṛthivyāṁ ca yātau devasya kiṁkarau rudra uvāca iti śāpaṁ tayordattvā tatra tasthurmunīśvarāḥ

Sanaka and the others said: "Leave this place, you two servants of the Lord, and go take birth on earth!" Rudra said: Having thus given the curse, the lords of sages remained there.

Verse 5 (padma.6.237.5)

devastamarthaṁ jñātvā ca tānāhūya ca tāvapi

The Lord, having learned of this matter, summoned those sages, and those two gatekeepers as well.

Verse 6 (padma.6.237.6)

tau cotthāyābravīttatra bhagavānbhūtabhāvanaḥ bhagavānuvāca kṛtavaṁtau mahāvīryyāvaparādhaṁ mahātmanām

Then, rising there, the Lord, source of all beings, spoke to them. Bhagavan said: "You two, of great valor, have committed an offense against these great souls —

Verse 7 (padma.6.237.7)

nātikramaṇīyamidaṁ bhavadbhyāṁ dvārapālakau dāsatvaṁ saptajanmāni yuvāṁ bhaktau mamānaghau

this curse cannot be set aside for you two gatekeepers. O my sinless devotees, either remain seven births in servitude, worshipping Me,

Verse 8 (padma.6.237.8)

amitratastathā trīṇi janmāni bhajato'pi vā rudra uvāca ityuktau tau mahāvīryyāvabrūtāṁ parameśvaram

or else, even while worshipping, take three births as My enemies — the choice is yours." Rudra said: Hearing this, those two mighty ones spoke to the Supreme Lord.

Verse 9 (padma.6.237.9)

jayavijayāvūcatuḥ cirakālaṁ mahīṁ gaṁtuṁ na samarthau sva mānada tasmādvairāya janmāni viddhi vāṁ ca vrajāvahe

Jaya and Vijaya said: "O bestower of honor, we are not able to endure long ages on earth apart from you. Therefore know that we shall take birth in enmity instead, and go swiftly —

Verse 10 (padma.6.237.10)

devatva yaiva nihato prāpsyāvo bhavadaṁtikam rudra uvāca ityuktvā dvārapālau tau pūrvaṁ jātau mahābalau

being slain by your own divine power, we shall swiftly reach your presence." Rudra said: Having spoken thus, those two mighty ones, gatekeepers in their former birth —

Verse 11 (padma.6.237.11)

kaśyapasya mahāvīryyau ditigarbhe mahāsurau hiraṇyakaśipurjyeṣṭho hiraṇyākṣaḥ kaniṣṭhakaḥ

were born as great asuras of great valor, from Kashyapa, in Diti's womb. Hiranyakashipu was the elder, Hiranyaksha the younger.

Verse 12 (padma.6.237.12)

ubhau tau lokavikhyātau mahāvīryya baloddhatau apramāṇaśarīraḥ sa hiraṇyākṣo mahoddhataḥ

Both were renowned throughout the world, of great valor, intoxicated with their own strength. That Hiranyaksha, of measureless body and exceeding arrogance —

Verse 13 (padma.6.237.13)

utpāṭya bāhusāhasraiḥ pṛthivīṁ samahīdharām sasāgarāṁ dvīpayutāṁ sarvvaprāṇisamanvitām

tore up, with his thousand arms, the earth together with its mountains, its oceans, its continents, and all its living beings,

Verse 14 (padma.6.237.14)

utpāṭya śirasā kṛtvā praviveśa rasātalam tato devagaṇāḥ sarve cukruśurbhayapīḍitāḥ

and having torn it up and set it upon his head, he entered the netherworld. Then all the hosts of gods, stricken with fear, cried out,

Verse 15 (padma.6.237.15)

śaraṇaṁ prayayurdevaṁ nārāyaṇamanāmayam tatastadadbhutaṁ jñātvā śaṁkhacakragadādharaḥ

and went for refuge to the god Narayana, free of all affliction. Then, learning of that wonder, he who bears the conch, discus, and mace —

Verse 16 (padma.6.237.16)

vārāharūpamāsthāya viśvarūpaṁ janārdanaḥ anādimadhyāṁtavapuḥ sarvadevamayo vibhuḥ

Janardana assumed the universal form of a boar — whose body has no beginning, middle, or end, the all-pervading one made of all the gods,

Verse 17 (padma.6.237.17)

viśvataḥ pāṇipaccakṣurmahādaṁṣṭro mahābhujaḥ daṁṣṭraikayā tu taṁ daityaṁ jaghāna parameśvaraḥ
