Verse 1 (padma.6.238.1)

rudra uvāca bhrātaraṁ nihataṁ jñātvā hiraṇyakaśipustataḥ tapastepe mahādaityo meroḥ pārśve ca māṁ prati

Rudra said: Learning that his brother had been slain, the great daitya Hiranyakashipu performed austerities beside Mount Meru, directed toward me.

Verse 2 (padma.6.238.2)

divyavarṣasahasrāṇi vāyubhakṣo mahābalaḥ japanpaṁcākṣaraṁ maṁtraṁ pūjayāmāsa māṁ śubhe

O auspicious one, that mighty one, for a thousand divine years, living on air alone, worshipped me while reciting the five-syllabled mantra.

Verse 3 (padma.6.238.3)

tataḥ prahṛṣṭamanasā tamavocaṁ mahāsuram varaṁ vṛṇīṣva daiteya yatte manasi varttate tataḥ provāca daiteyo māṁ prasannaṁ śubhānane

Then, my heart pleased, I said to that great daitya: "O king of daityas, ask whatever boon is in your mind." Then that daitya spoke to me, pleased, O beautiful-faced one.

Verse 4 (padma.6.238.4)

hiraṇyakaśipuruvāca devāsuramanuṣyāṇāṁ gaṁdharvoragarakṣasām paśupakṣimṛgāṇāṁ ca siddhānāṁ vai mahātmanām

Hiranyakashipu said: "From gods, asuras, men, gandharvas, nagas, rakshasas, beasts, birds, wild animals, the great-souled Siddhas,

Verse 5 (padma.6.238.5)

yakṣavidyādharāṇāṁ ca kinnarāṇāṁ tathaiva ca sarveṣāmeva rogāṇāmāyudhānāṁ tathaiva ca sarveṣāmṛṣimukhyānāmavadhyatvaṁ prayaccha me

yakshas, vidyadharas, and kinnaras, from every disease and weapon likewise, and from every chief sage too — grant me immunity from being slain.

Verse 6 (padma.6.238.6)

rudra uvāca evamastviti tadrakṣastvabruvaṁ priyadarśane matto mahadvaraṁ prāpya sa daiteyo mahābalaḥ

Rudra said: O one of pleasing sight, I said to that demon, "So be it." Having obtained this great boon from me, that mighty daitya —

Verse 7 (padma.6.238.7)

jitvā maheṁdraṁ devāṁśca sa trailokyeśvaro'bhavat sarvāṁśca yajñabhāgāṁśca svayamevāgrahīdbalāt

conquered Mahendra and the gods and became lord of the three worlds. He forcibly seized all the sacrificial shares for himself.

Verse 8 (padma.6.238.8)

trātāraṁ nādhigacchaṁti devatāstena nirjitāḥ tasyaiva kiṁkarāḥ sarve gaṁdharvā devadānavāḥ

The gods, thus defeated by him, found no protector. The Gandharvas, gods and demons, Yakshas, Nagas, Siddhas and Sadhyas — all became his servants, subject to his will.

Verse 9 (padma.6.238.9)

yakṣāścanāgāḥ siddhāśca sādhyāśca vaśavartinaḥ uttānapādasya sutāṁ kalyāṇīṁ nāma kanyakām

That mighty king of daityas duly wed a maiden named Kalyani, daughter of Uttanapada.

Verse 10 (padma.6.238.10)

upayeme vidhānena daityarājo mahābalaḥ tasyāṁ jāto mahātejāḥ prahlādo daityarāṭśubhe

From her, O auspicious one, was born the greatly radiant Prahlada, the son of the daitya king.

Verse 11 (padma.6.238.11)

anurakto hṛṣīkeśe garbhavāse'pi yo harau sarvāvasthāsu kṛtyeṣu manovākkāyakarmmabhiḥ

Even while in the womb, he was devoted to Hrishikesha, Hari. In every state and every act, through mind, speech, and body,

Verse 12 (padma.6.238.12)

nānyaṁ jānāti deveśātprasannātmā sanātanāt sa kāle'pi vinītaḥ sangurugehe vasatsudhīḥ

he, ever glad of heart, knew none other than the eternal Lord of gods. When the time came, that wise, humble child dwelt in his guru's house,

Verse 13 (padma.6.238.13)

adhītya sarvavedāṁśca śāstrāṇi vividhāni ca kasyacittvatha kālasya guruṇā saha daityajaḥ

and having studied all the Vedas and various scriptures, after some time that son of the daityas, together with his teacher —

Verse 14 (padma.6.238.14)

pituḥ samīpamāgatya vavaṁde vinayānvitaḥ taṁ pariṣvajya bāhubhyāṁ tanayaṁ śubhalakṣaṇam aṁke nidhāya daityeṁdraḥ provācedaṁ suvismitam

came before his father and bowed with humility. The lord of daityas, embracing that auspicious son with both arms and setting him on his lap, spoke to him in great wonder.

Verse 15 (padma.6.238.15)

hiraṇyakaśipuruvāca prahlāda cirakālaṁ tvaṁ gurugehe niveśitaḥ yaduktā guruṇā vidyā tanmamācakṣva suvrata

Hiranyakashipu said: "O Prahlada, O one of good vows, you have dwelt long in your guru's house; tell me the learning your teacher has taught you."

Verse 16 (padma.6.238.16)

rudra uvāca iti pṛṣṭaḥ svapitrā vai prahlādo janmavaiṣṇavaḥ prāha daityeśvaraṁ prītyā vacanaṁ kaluṣāpaham

Rudra said: Thus questioned by his father, Prahlada, a Vaishnava from birth, spoke lovingly to the lord of daityas words that dispel all sin.

Verse 17 (padma.6.238.17)

prahlāda uvāca yo vai sarvopaniṣadāmarthaḥ puruṣa īśvaraḥ taṁ vai sarvagataṁ viṣṇuṁ namaskṛtvā bravīmi te

Prahlada said: "He who is the meaning of all the Upanishads, that Lord, the Supreme Person — bowing to him, the all-pervading Vishnu, I speak to you.

Verse 18 (padma.6.238.18)

rudra uvāca iti viṣṇustutiṁ śrutvā daityarāḍ vismayānvitaḥ uvāca taṁ guruṁ roṣātkiṁ tvayoktaṁ mamātmaje

Rudra said: Hearing this praise of Vishnu, the king of daityas, astonished, said angrily to the teacher: "What have you taught my son?

Verse 19 (padma.6.238.19)

mamātmajasya durbuddhe harisaṁstavamīdṛśam kimarthamuktavānjāḍyamakāryyaṁ brāhmaṇocitam

O fool, why did you teach my son such praise of Hari? Why did you commit this folly, an act unworthy of a Brahmin,

Verse 20 (padma.6.238.20)

aśrāvyaṁ madamitrasya stavametaṁ mamāgrataḥ bālenāpikṛtaṁtvetattvatprasādāddivajādhama

this unbearable praise of my enemy, uttered before me? O vile Brahmin, this has been done even by this child, through your doing."

Verse 21 (padma.6.238.21)

ityuktvā parito vīkṣya daityarāṭkrodhamūrcchitaḥ uvāca daityamekaṁ tu baṁdhayainaṁ dvijādhamam

Having spoken thus, the daitya king, overwhelmed with anger, looked about and said to a daitya: "Bind this vile Brahmin!"

Verse 22 (padma.6.238.22)

itirājavacaḥ śrutvā sa babaṁdha bhṛgoḥ sutam badhyamānaṁ guruṁ dṛṣṭvā prahlādo brāhmaṇapriyaḥ uvāca pitaraṁ tāta idaṁ me noktavānguruḥ

Hearing the king's word, he bound the son of Bhrigu, the teacher. Seeing his teacher bound, Prahlada, dear to Brahmins, said to his father: "Father, my teacher did not teach me this.

Verse 23 (padma.6.238.23)

kṛpayā devadevasya śikṣitosmi hareḥ prabho nānyo gururme bhavati sa eva prerako hariḥ

O Lord, I have been taught only by the grace of Hari, God of gods. I have no other teacher — Hari alone is my inspirer.

Verse 24 (padma.6.238.24)

śrotā maṁtā tathā vaktā draṣṭā sarvaga īśvaraḥ harirevākṣayaḥ karttā niyaṁtā sarvadehinām tasmādanāgaso vipro moktavyo'yaṁ guruḥ prabho

He alone is the hearer, the thinker, the speaker, the seer, the all-pervading Lord. Hari alone is the imperishable doer and controller of all embodied beings. Therefore, O Lord, let this blameless Brahmin teacher be released."

Verse 25 (padma.6.238.25)

rudra uvāca iti putravacaḥ śrutvā hiraṇyakaśipustataḥ taṁ brāhmaṇaṁ mocayitvā svasutaṁ prāha vismayāt

Rudra said: Hearing his son's words, Hiranyakashipu, astonished, released that Brahmin, and, in wonder, said to his own son —

Verse 26 (padma.6.238.26)

kiṁ vatsa tvaṁ bhramasyevaṁ mithyāvākyairdvijanmanaḥ ko viṣṇuḥ kiṁ tu tadrūpaṁ kutrāsau saṁsthito hariḥ

"O child, why are you deluded by this Brahmin's false words? Who is Vishnu? What is his form? Where does this Hari dwell?

Verse 27 (padma.6.238.27)

ahameveśvaro loke trailokyādhipatiryataḥ māmevārccaya goviṁdaṁ tyaja śatruṁ durāsadam

In this world I alone am God, for I alone am lord of the three worlds. Worship me, Govinda, and forsake this unassailable enemy.

Verse 28 (padma.6.238.28)

athavā śaṁkaraṁ devaṁ rudraṁ lokaguruṁ prabhum arccayasvāsurādhyakṣaṁ sarvaiśvaryyapradaṁ śivam

Or else worship the god Shankara, the Lord Rudra, teacher of the worlds — the ruler of the asuras, Shiva who bestows every fortune.

Verse 29 (padma.6.238.29)

tripuṁḍradhāraṇaṁ kṛtvā bhasmanā daityapūjitam pūjayitvā mahādevaṁ pāśupatyoktamārgataḥ

Bearing the triple mark, adorned with ash, worshipped by the daityas — worship that Mahadeva according to the Pashupata path,"

Verse 30 (padma.6.238.30)

rudra uvāca iti daityapatervākyaṁ śrutvā daityapurohitāḥ

Rudra said: Hearing this word of the lord of daityas, the daitya priests —

Verse 31 (padma.6.238.31)

purohitā ūcuḥ evameva mahābhāga kuruṣva vacanaṁ pituḥ tyaja śatruṁ kaiṭabhāriṁ pūjayasva trilocanam

The priests said: "O illustrious one, do just as your father says. Forsake the enemy of Kaitabha, and worship the three-eyed Shiva.

Verse 32 (padma.6.238.32)

rudrātparataro devo nāsti sarvaprado nṝṇām pitā tavāpi tasyaiva prasādādīśvaro'bhavat

There is no god greater than Rudra, none who grants men everything as he does. Your father too became lord by his grace alone."

Verse 33 (padma.6.238.33)

rudra uvāca iti teṣāṁ vacaḥ śrutvā prahlādo janmavaiṣṇavaṁ

Rudra said: Prahlada, a Vaishnava from birth, having heard their words —

Verse 34 (padma.6.238.34)

prahlāda uvāca aho bhagavataḥ śreṣṭhā yanmāyā mohitaṁ jagat aho vedāṁtaviduṣaḥ sarvalokeṣu pūjitāḥ

Prahlada said: "How wondrous, that this world is so deluded by the Lord's maya! How wondrous, that even those held to be knowers of Vedanta, worshipped in every world —

Verse 35 (padma.6.238.35)

brāhmaṇā api cāpalyādvadaṁtyevaṁ madānvitāḥ nārāyaṇaḥ paraṁ brahma tatvaṁ nārāyaṇaḥ param

even Brahmins, out of fickleness and pride, speak thus! Narayana alone is the Supreme Brahman, Narayana alone is the supreme reality,

Verse 36 (padma.6.238.36)

nārāyaṇaḥ paro dhyātā dhyānaṁ nārayaṇaḥ param gatirviśvasya jagataḥ śāśvataṁ śivamacyutaḥ

Narayana alone is the supreme meditator, Narayana alone is the supreme meditation. He alone is the eternal, everlasting, auspicious, unfailing refuge of the world.

Verse 37 (padma.6.238.37)

dhātā vidhātā jagato vāsudevaḥ sanātanaḥ viśvamevedaṁ puruṣastadviśvamupajīvati

He alone is the maker and ordainer of the world, the eternal Vasudeva. This entire universe is that Person, and this universe lives dependent upon him.

Verse 38 (padma.6.238.38)

hiraṇmayavapurnityaḥpuṁḍarīkanibhekṣaṇaḥ śrībhūlīlāpatiḥ saumyonirmmalaḥ śubhavigrahaḥ

He is of golden form, eternal, with eyes like the lotus. He is gentle, stainless, of auspicious form, the Lord who sports with Shri and Bhu.

Verse 39 (padma.6.238.39)

tenaiva sṛṣṭau brahmeśau sarge devottamau vibhū tasyaivājñāṁ puraskṛtya varttete brahmaśaṁkarau

By him alone are Brahma and Isha, best among the gods, empowered in creation; honoring his command alone do Brahma and Shankara carry out their tasks.

Verse 40 (padma.6.238.40)

bhīṣāsmādvāti pavano bhīṣodeti divākaraḥ bhīṣāsmādagniścaṁdro'tha mṛtyurdhāvati paṁcamaḥ

From fear of him the wind blows, from fear of him the sun rises. From fear of him fire and moon, and death as the fifth, run their courses.

Verse 41 (padma.6.238.41)

āsīdeko harirdivyo devo nārāyaṇaḥ paraḥ brahmā neṁdro na ceśāno na ca caṁdra divākarau

In the beginning there was only the one divine god Hari, the supreme Narayana — there was no Brahma, no Indra, no Ishana, no moon or sun,

Verse 42 (padma.6.238.42)

na vā dyāvāpṛthivyau ca nakṣatrāṇi divaukasaḥ tasya viṣṇoḥ paraṁ dhāma sadā paśyaṁti sūrayaḥ

no heaven or earth, no stars, no dwellers of heaven. That supreme abode of Vishnu alone, the wise ever behold.

Verse 43 (padma.6.238.43)

evaṁ sarvopaniṣadāmarthaṁ hitvā dvijottamāḥ rāgāllobhādbhayādvāpi kiṁ bravītha mamāgrataḥ

O best of the twice-born, thus abandoning the meaning of all the Upanishads, out of attachment, greed, or fear, what is it you speak before me?

Verse 44 (padma.6.238.44)

taṁ sarvarakṣakaṁ devaṁ tyaktvā sarveśvaraṁ harim kathaṁ pāṣaṁḍamāśritya pūjayāmi ca śaṁkaram

Having forsaken that protector of all, Hari, Lord of all, how could I take refuge in heresy and worship Shankara?

Verse 45 (padma.6.238.45)

lakṣmīpatiṁ devadevamanaṁtaṁ puruṣottamam iṁdīvaradalaśyāmaṁ padmapatrāyatekṣaṇam

The husband of Lakshmi, God of gods, the infinite Purushottama, dark as a blue-lotus petal, with wide eyes like lotus leaves,

Verse 46 (padma.6.238.46)

śrīvatsalakṣitoraskaṁ sarvvābharaṇabhūṣitam sadā kumāraṁ sarvveśaṁ nityānandasukhapradam

his chest marked with the sign of Shrivatsa, adorned with every ornament, ever youthful, Lord of all, the giver of eternal blissful joy —

Verse 47 (padma.6.238.47)

kṛṣṇaṁ dadhyurmahātmāno yoginaḥ sanakādayaḥ yamarcayaṁti brahmeśa śakrādyā devatāgaṇāḥ

upon that Krishna do the great-souled yogis Sanaka and his brothers meditate, whom Brahma, Shiva, Indra, and the hosts of gods worship.

Verse 48 (padma.6.238.48)

yasya patnyāḥ kaṭākṣārddhadṛṣṭyā dṛṣṭā divaukasaḥ brahmeṁdra rudra varuṇa yama soma dhanādhipāḥ

by half a glance from whose consort, Brahma, Indra, Rudra, Varuna, Yama, Soma, Kubera and the other dwellers of heaven are looked upon and sustained —

Verse 49 (padma.6.238.49)

yannāmasmaraṇādeva pāpināmapi satvaram muktirbhavati jaṁtūnāṁ brahmādīnāṁ sudurlabhā

by the mere remembrance of whose name even sinners swiftly attain liberation, so difficult to obtain even for Brahma and the gods —

Verse 50 (padma.6.238.50)

sa evaṁ rakṣakaḥ śrīśo devānāmapi sarvadā tameva pūjayiṣyāmi lakṣmyā saṁyutamacyutam

he, the Lord of Shri, is ever the protector even of the gods. Him alone, the unfailing Lord together with Lakshmi, I shall worship,

Verse 51 (padma.6.238.51)

prāpsyāmi susukhenaiva tadviṣṇoḥ paramaṁ padam rudra uvāca iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā hiraṇyakaśipustataḥ

and with ease I shall attain that supreme abode of Vishnu." Rudra said: Hearing his words, Hiranyakashipu —

Verse 52 (padma.6.238.52)

krodhena mahatāviṣṭo jajvālāgnirivāparaḥ parito vīkṣya daiteyānityāha krodhamūrchitaḥ

filled with great anger, blazed up like a second fire. Looking about at the daityas, overwhelmed with rage, he said —

Verse 53 (padma.6.238.53)

hiraṇyakaśipuruvāca bhīṣaṇaiḥ śastrasaṁghātaiḥ prahlādaṁ pāpakāriṇam mamājñayā ghātayadhvaṁ śatrupūjanatatparam

Hiranyakashipu said: "With terrible masses of weapons, by my command, slay this sinful Prahlada, devoted to worshipping my enemy.

Verse 54 (padma.6.238.54)

rakṣitā harireveti rakṣate tena vātsalāt adyaiva saphalaṁ tasya paśyeyaṁ harirakṣaṇam

He says, out of affection, that Hari alone protects him — this very day I shall see the fruit of that protection of Hari."

Verse 55 (padma.6.238.55)

rudra uvāca tadodyatāstrā daiteyā haṁtuṁ daityeśvarātmajam parivārya mahātmānaṁ tasthurdaityeśvarājñayā

Rudra said: Then the daityas, weapons raised to kill that son of the daitya king, surrounded that great soul by the king's command and stood ready.

Verse 56 (padma.6.238.56)

prahlādo'pi tathā viṣṇuṁ dhyātvā hṛdayapaṁkaje japannaṣṭākṣaraṁ maṁtraṁ tasthau giririvāparaḥ

Prahlada too, meditating on Vishnu in the lotus of his heart, reciting the eight-syllabled mantra, stood unmoved like another mountain.

Verse 57 (padma.6.238.57)

taṁ jaghnuḥ parito vīrāḥ śūlatomaraśaktibhiḥ prahlādasya vapustatra harisaṁsmaraṇācchubhe

The warriors struck him from every side with spears, lances, and javelins. But, O auspicious one, through remembrance of Hari, Prahlada's body there —

Verse 58 (padma.6.238.58)

viṣṇoḥ prabhāvādduddharṣādvajrabhūtamabhūdbhṛśam tataḥ saṁprāpya tadgātraṁ mahāstrāṇi suradviṣām

became, by Vishnu's irresistible power, as if made of adamant. Then those great weapons of the demons, striking his body,

Verse 59 (padma.6.238.59)

nīlotpaladalānīva petuścichannāḥ kṣitau śubhe alpamapyasya tadgātraṁ bhettuṁ daityā na ca kṣamāḥ

shattered like petals of a blue lotus and fell to the ground. The daityas were unable to pierce even the least part of that body.

Verse 60 (padma.6.238.60)

vismitāvāṅmukhāstasthurdaitya rājāṁtike bhaṭāḥ tādṛgvidhaṁ mahātmānaṁ dṛṣṭvā putraṁ mahābalam

Astonished, their faces cast down, those warriors stood before the daitya king. Seeing his son thus, of such great might —

Verse 61 (padma.6.238.61)

vismayaṁ paramaṁ gatvā daityarāṭkrodhamūrchitaḥ ādideśa tataḥ sarvāndaṁdaśūkānmahāviṣān

the daitya king, filled with great wonder yet overwhelmed with rage, then commanded all the great venomous serpents —

Verse 62 (padma.6.238.62)

vāsukiprabhṛtīnbhīmānkhādayadhvamiti krudhā ādiṣṭāstena rājñātha te nāgāḥ sumahābalāḥ

Vasuki and the others, in his fury: "Devour him!" Commanded thus by the king, those mighty serpents —

Verse 63 (padma.6.238.63)

jvalitāsyā mahābhīmāstaṁ ca khādurmahābalam garuḍadhvajabhaktaṁ taṁ vidaśya garalāyudhāḥ

with blazing mouths, most terrible, bearing the weapon of venom, bit that mighty devotee of the Garuda-bannered Lord.

Verse 64 (padma.6.238.64)

nirviṣāścchinnadaśanā babhūvuranilāśanāḥ vainateyasahasreṇa chinnagātrāḥ suvihvalāḥ

But they became venomless, their fangs broken, reduced to feeding on air alone. Their bodies as if torn apart a thousandfold by Garuda's kin, utterly distraught —

Verse 65 (padma.6.238.65)

pradudruvurdiśaḥ sarvāvamaṁto rudhiraṁ bhṛśam tādṛgvidhānmahāsarpāndṛṣṭvā daityapatistadā

they fled in every direction, vomiting blood profusely. Seeing those great serpents in that state, the lord of daityas then —

Verse 66 (padma.6.238.66)

ādideśa tataḥ kruddho diggajānsumadānvitān nirdiṣṭāstena rājñātha diggajāśca madoddhatāḥ

in fury commanded the intoxicated elephants of the quarters. Commanded by the king, those maddened elephants —

Verse 67 (padma.6.238.67)

parivāryātha taṁ jaghnurdaṁtaiḥ pṛthutarairbhṛśam atha diggajadaṁtāśca chinnamūlāḥ patanbhuvi

surrounded him and struck him again and again fiercely with their great tusks. But it was the elephants' own tusks that broke off at the root and fell to the ground.

Verse 68 (padma.6.238.68)

daṁtairvinākṛtā nāgā bhayārtā vai pradudruvuḥ tāndṛṣṭvātha mahānāgāndaityeṁdraḥ kupito balī

Those elephants, deprived of their tusks, fled in terror. Seeing those great elephants, the mighty lord of daityas grew enraged,

Verse 69 (padma.6.238.69)

prajvālya ca mahāvahniṁ cikṣepa sutamātmanaḥ jalaśāyipriyaṁ dṛṣṭvā prahlādaṁ havyavāhanaḥ

and, having a great fire kindled, cast his own son into it. Seeing Prahlada, dear to Vishnu who reclines upon the waters, the fire —

Verse 70 (padma.6.238.70)

na dadāha ca taṁ dhīraṁ suśītaḥ samabhūcchikhī adahyamānaṁ taṁ bālaṁ dṛṣṭvā rājā suvismitaḥ

could not burn that steadfast child; rather, its flame became exceedingly cool. Seeing that unburnt child, the king, greatly astonished,

Verse 71 (padma.6.238.71)

prādāttasmai viṣaṁ ghoraṁ sarvabhūtahitaṁ tadā tasya viṣṇoḥ prabhāvācca viṣamasyāmṛtaṁ bhavet

then had him given deadly, terrible poison, harmful to all beings. But through Vishnu's power that poison became nectar for him.

Verse 72 (padma.6.238.72)

arpaṇāttasya devasya viṣaṁ cāmṛtamaśnute evamādyairvadhopāyairghorarūpaiḥ sudāruṇaiḥ

By mere offering to that god, even poison becomes nectar. Thus, by these and other terrible, most cruel means of killing —

Verse 73 (padma.6.238.73)

mohayitvātmajaṁ rājā tasyāvadhyatvamīkṣya ca tataḥ sāmnā sutaṁ prāha daityarāḍvismayākulaḥ

having thus afflicted his own son, yet seeing him unslayable, the astonished daitya king spoke gently to his son.

Verse 74 (padma.6.238.74)

hiraṇyakaśipuruvāca tvayā viṣṇoḥ paratvaṁ ca samyaguktaṁ mamāgrataḥ vyāpitvātsarvabhūtānāṁ viṣṇurityabhidhīyate

Hiranyakashipu said: "You have rightly declared before me the supremacy of Vishnu — for since he pervades all beings, he is called Vishnu.

Verse 75 (padma.6.238.75)

yo'sau sarvagato devaḥ sa eva parameśvaraḥ tasya sarvagatatvaṁ vai pratyakṣaṁ darśayasva me

That all-pervading god is indeed the Supreme Lord. Show me directly that all-pervasiveness of his.

Verse 76 (padma.6.238.76)

aiśvaryaśaktitejāṁsi jñānavīryabalāni ca parasya tasya paramaṁ rūpaṁ guṇavibhūtayaḥ

Sovereignty, power, splendor, knowledge, valor and strength — the supreme form and the glorious attributes of that Supreme Being —

Verse 77 (padma.6.238.77)

samyagdṛṣṭvā prayatnena viṣṇuṁ manye divaukasām mama pratibalo loke nāsti deveṣu kaścana

only once I have duly beheld them with effort shall I regard Vishnu as supreme among the dwellers of heaven. In this world, among the gods, none is my equal in strength.

Verse 78 (padma.6.238.78)

īśānavaradānena sarvabhūteṣvavadhyatām prāptavānsarvabhūtānāṁnadurjayatvaṁ ca mānada īśvaratvaṁ labhedviṣṇurmāṁ jitvā balavīryataḥ

By Ishana's boon I have gained immunity from death at the hands of any being, and, O bestower of honor, invincibility before all. Only if Vishnu conquers me by strength and valor could he attain lordship."

Verse 79 (padma.6.238.79)

rudra uvāca iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā prahlādaḥ prāha vismitaḥ hareḥ prabhāvaṁ dainyasya kathayāmāsa suvrataḥ

Rudra said: Hearing his words, Prahlada, astonished, that one of good vows, told his father, thus humbled, of Hari's power.

Verse 80 (padma.6.238.80)

prahlāda uvāca yo'sau nārāyaṇaḥ śrīmānparamātmā sanātanaḥ vasanātsarvabhūteṣu vāsudevaḥ sa ucyate

Prahlada said: "He who is the glorious Narayana, the eternal Supreme Soul, who, because he dwells in all beings, is called Vasudeva —

Verse 81 (padma.6.238.81)

sarvasyāpi jagaddhātā viṣṇurityabhidhīyate na kiṁcidasmādanyaṁ tu jagatsthāvara jaṁgamam

he alone is called Vishnu, the maker of the whole world. In this moving and unmoving universe there is nothing apart from him.

Verse 82 (padma.6.238.82)

sarvatra cidacidvastu rūpaṁ tasyaiva nānyathā tripādvyāptiḥ paraṁ vyomni pādavyāpti kalādbhutā

Everywhere, all things sentient and insentient are his form alone, nothing else. In the supreme heaven is his three-quarter extent, and this wondrous single quarter is his extent here.

Verse 83 (padma.6.238.83)

yo'sau cakragadāpāṇiḥ pītavāsā janārdanaḥ yogibhirdṛśyate bhaktyā nābhaktyā dṛśyate kvacit

He who bears the discus and mace, clad in yellow, Janardana — he is seen by yogis through devotion alone; without devotion he is never seen anywhere.

Verse 84 (padma.6.238.84)

draṣṭuṁ na śakyo roṣācca matsarādvā janārdanaḥ devatiryaṅmanuṣyeṣu sthāvareṣvapi jaṁtuṣu vyāpya tiṣṭhati sarvveṣu kṣudreṣvapi mahatsu ca

By anger or envy Janardana cannot be seen. He dwells pervading gods, beasts, men, and even the unmoving creatures — great and small alike, he abides in all."

Verse 85 (padma.6.238.85)

rudra uvāca iti prahlādavacanaṁ śrutvā daityavarastadā uvāca roṣatāmrākṣo bhartsayaṁśca sutaṁ muhuḥ

Rudra said: Hearing Prahlada's words, the best of daityas, his eyes red with rage, rebuking his son again and again, said —

Verse 86 (padma.6.238.86)

hiraṇyakaśipuruvāca asau sarvagato viṣṇurapi cetparamaḥ pumān pratyayaṁ darśayasvādya bahubhiḥ kiṁ ca lāpitaiḥ

Hiranyakashipu said: "If this all-pervading Vishnu is truly the supreme being, then show me proof of it this very day — what use is so much talking?"

Verse 87 (padma.6.238.87)

Verse 88 (padma.6.238.88)

hiraṇyakaśipuruvāca asmindarśaya taṁ viṣṇuṁ yadi sarvagato bhavet anyathā tvāṁ vadhiṣyāmi mithyāvākyapralāpinam

Hiranyakashipu said: "Show me that Vishnu in this pillar, if he is truly all-pervading. Otherwise I shall slay you, prater of false words."

Verse 89 (padma.6.238.89)

Rudra said: Having spoken thus, the lord of daityas suddenly drew his sword and, in fury, struck at Prahlada's chest with it to kill him.

Verse 90 (padma.6.238.90)

tasminkṣaṇe mahāśabdaḥ staṁbhe saṁśrūyate bhṛśam saṁvartāśanisaṁrāvaiḥ khamiva sphuṭitāṁtaram

At that very instant, a mighty sound was heard from within that pillar, like the roar of the cataclysmic thunderbolt, as though the very sky had split apart.

Verse 91 (padma.6.238.91)

tena śabdena mahatā daityaśrotravighātinā sarve nipātitā bhūmau chinnamūlā iva drumāḥ

with cries of "Victory, victory!" bowed to Janardana, Lord of gods. In the limbs of that great-souled Narasimha he beheld the worlds, oceans, and continents, with gods, gandharvas, and men; at the tip of his mane a thousand universes could be seen.
