Rama's Entry into Ayodhya
Verse 1 (padma.6.242.1)
रुद्र उवाच- स्वायम्भुवो मनुः पूर्वं द्वाशार्णं महामनुम् । जजाप गोमतीतीरे नैमिषे विमले शुभे ।
rudra uvāca svāyambhuvo manuḥ pūrvaṁ dvāśārṇaṁ mahāmanum jajāpa gomatītīre naimiṣe vimale śubhe
Rudra said: Formerly, Svayambhuva Manu recited the great twelve-syllabled mantra on the bank of the Gomati, in pure, auspicious Naimisha.
Verse 2 (padma.6.242.2)
तेन वर्षसहस्रेण पूजितः कमलापतिः । मत्तो वरं वृणीष्वेति तं प्राह भगवान्हरिः ।
tena varṣasahasreṇa pūjitaḥ kamalāpatiḥ matto varaṁ vṛṇīṣveti taṁ prāha bhagavānhariḥ
Worshipped by him for a thousand years, the husband of Kamala, the Lord Hari, said to him, "Choose a boon from me."
Verse 3 (padma.6.242.3)
ततः प्रोवाच हर्षेण मनुः स्वायम्भुवो हरिम् । मनुरुवाच- पुत्रत्वं भज देवेश त्रीणि जन्मानि चाच्युत ।
tataḥ provāca harṣeṇa manuḥ svāyambhuvo harim manuruvāca putratvaṁ bhaja deveśa trīṇi janmāni cācyuta
Then, with joy, Svayambhuva Manu spoke to Hari. Manu said: "Become my son, O Lord of gods, for three births, O unfailing one.
Verse 4 (padma.6.242.4)
त्वां पुत्रलालसत्वेन भजामि पुरुषोत्तमम् । रुद्र उवाच- इत्युक्तस्तेन लक्ष्मीशः प्रोवाच सुमहागिरा ।
tvāṁ putralālasatvena bhajāmi puruṣottamam rudra uvāca ityuktastena lakṣmīśaḥ provāca sumahāgirā
Out of longing for you as a son, I worship you, Purushottama." Rudra said: Thus addressed by him, the Lord of Lakshmi spoke in a most solemn voice.
Verse 5 (padma.6.242.5)
विष्णुरुवाच- भविष्यति नृपश्रेष्ठ यत्ते मनसि कांक्षितम् । ममैव च महत्प्रीतिस्तव पुत्रत्वहेतवे ।
viṣṇuruvāca bhaviṣyati nṛpaśreṣṭha yatte manasi kāṁkṣitam mamaiva ca mahatprītistava putratvahetave
Vishnu said: "It shall be, O best of kings, whatever is desired in your mind. And I too have great delight in becoming your son.
Verse 6 (padma.6.242.6)
स्थितिप्रयोजने काले तत्र तत्र नृपोत्तम । त्वयि जाते त्वहमपि जातोस्मि तव सुव्रत ।
sthitiprayojane kāle tatra tatra nṛpottama tvayi jāte tvahamapi jātosmi tava suvrata
At the proper time, for the purpose of preservation, O best of kings, wherever you are born, there I too, O one of good vows, am born as your son.
Verse 7 (padma.6.242.7)
परित्राणाय साधूनां विनाशाय च दुष्कृताम् । धर्म्मसंस्थापनार्थाय संभवामि तवानघ ।
paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṁ vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām dharmmasaṁsthāpanārthāya saṁbhavāmi tavānagha
For the protection of the good, and for the destruction of evildoers, for the establishment of dharma, I take birth as your son, O sinless one."
Verse 8 (padma.6.242.8)
रुद्र उवाच- एवं दत्वा वरं तस्मै तत्रैवांतर्दधे हरिः । अस्याभूत्प्रथमं जन्म मनोः स्वायंभुवस्य च ।
rudra uvāca evaṁ datvā varaṁ tasmai tatraivāṁtardadhe hariḥ asyābhūtprathamaṁ janma manoḥ svāyaṁbhuvasya ca
Rudra said: Having thus granted him the boon, Hari disappeared then and there. This was the first birth of Vishnu as a son to Svayambhuva Manu.
Verse 9 (padma.6.242.9)
रघूणामन्वये पूर्वं राजा दशरथो ह्यभूत् । द्वितीयो वसुदेवोऽभूद्वृष्णीनामन्वये विभुः ।
raghūṇāmanvaye pūrvaṁ rājā daśaratho hyabhūt dvitīyo vasudevo'bhūdvṛṣṇīnāmanvaye vibhuḥ
In the line of the Raghus, formerly, there was king Dasharatha. The second was the mighty Vasudeva, in the line of the Vrishnis.
Verse 10 (padma.6.242.10)
कलेर्दिव्यसहस्राब्दप्रमाणस्यांत्यपादयोः । शंभलग्रामकं प्राप्य ब्राह्मणः संजनिष्यति ।
kalerdivyasahasrābdapramāṇasyāṁtyapādayoḥ śaṁbhalagrāmakaṁ prāpya brāhmaṇaḥ saṁjaniṣyati
At the end of the last quarter of Kali, whose measure is a thousand divine years, [Vishnu,] reaching the village of Shambhala, shall be born as a Brahmin.
Verse 11 (padma.6.242.11)
कौशल्या समभूत्पत्नी राज्ञो दशरथस्य हि । यदोर्वंशस्य सेवार्थं देवकी नाम विश्रुता ।
kauśalyā samabhūtpatnī rājño daśarathasya hi yadorvaṁśasya sevārthaṁ devakī nāma viśrutā
Kausalya became the wife of King Dasharatha; and, for the service of the Yadu race, the renowned Devaki became Vasudeva's wife;
Verse 12 (padma.6.242.12)
हरिव्रतस्य विप्रस्य भार्य्या देवप्रभा पुनः । एवं मातृत्वमापन्ना त्रीणि जन्मानि शार्ङ्गिणः ।
harivratasya viprasya bhāryyā devaprabhā punaḥ evaṁ mātṛtvamāpannā trīṇi janmāni śārṅgiṇaḥ
and Devaprabha, wife of the Brahmin Harivrata, in the third birth. Thus, in three births, these women attain motherhood of the wielder of the Sharnga bow.
Verse 13 (padma.6.242.13)
पूर्वं रामस्य चरितं वक्ष्यामि तव सुव्रते । यस्य स्मरणमात्रेण विमुक्तिः पापिनामपि ।
pūrvaṁ rāmasya caritaṁ vakṣyāmi tava suvrate yasya smaraṇamātreṇa vimuktiḥ pāpināmapi
First, O one of good vows, I shall tell you the story of Rama, by the mere remembrance of whom even sinners attain liberation.
Verse 14 (padma.6.242.14)
हिरण्यकहिरण्याक्षौ द्वितीयं जन्मसंश्रितौ । कुंभकर्ण दशग्रीवावजायेतां महाबलौ ।
hiraṇyakahiraṇyākṣau dvitīyaṁ janmasaṁśritau kuṁbhakarṇa daśagrīvāvajāyetāṁ mahābalau
Hiranyakashipu and Hiranyaksha, taking a second birth, were born as the mighty Kumbhakarna and Dashagriva.
Verse 15 (padma.6.242.15)
पुलस्त्यस्य सुतो विप्रो विश्रवानाम धार्मिकः । तस्य पत्नी विशालाक्षी राक्षसेंद्र सुताऽनघे ।
pulastyasya suto vipro viśravānāma dhārmikaḥ tasya patnī viśālākṣī rākṣaseṁdra sutā'naghe
The son of Pulastya was a righteous Brahmin named Vishrava. His wife, wide-eyed, O sinless one, was the daughter of the lord of the rakshasas —
Verse 16 (padma.6.242.16)
सुकेशितनया सा स्यात्सुमाली दानवस्य च । केकसी नाम कन्यासीत्तस्य भार्या दृढव्रता ।
sukeśitanayā sā syātsumālī dānavasya ca kekasī nāma kanyāsīttasya bhāryā dṛḍhavratā
she was the daughter of Sukesha, and granddaughter of the danava Sumali; Kaikasi was the name of that maiden, his wife, of firm vow.
Verse 17 (padma.6.242.17)
कामोद्रिक्ता तु सा देवी संध्याकाले महामुनिम् । रमयामास तन्वंगी यथेष्टं शुभदर्शना ।
kāmodriktā tu sā devī saṁdhyākāle mahāmunim ramayāmāsa tanvaṁgī yatheṣṭaṁ śubhadarśanā
That lady, overcome with desire, at twilight, that slender-limbed, beautiful one, delighted that great sage as she wished.
Verse 18 (padma.6.242.18)
कामात्संध्याभवाद्यत्वात्तस्यां जातौ महाबलौ । रावणः कुंभकर्णश्च राक्षसौ लोकविश्रुतौ ।
kāmātsaṁdhyābhavādyatvāttasyāṁ jātau mahābalau rāvaṇaḥ kuṁbhakarṇaśca rākṣasau lokaviśrutau
Because of that lustful union at the improper twilight hour, there were born of her two mighty rakshasas, renowned throughout the world — Ravana and Kumbhakarna.
Verse 19 (padma.6.242.19)
कन्या शूर्पणखा नाम जातातिविकृतानना । कस्यचित्त्वथ कालस्य तस्यां जातो विभीषणः ।
kanyā śūrpaṇakhā nāma jātātivikṛtānanā kasyacittvatha kālasya tasyāṁ jāto vibhīṣaṇaḥ
A daughter, named Shurpanakha, was born, of most misshapen face. After some time, Vibhishana was born of her too,
Verse 20 (padma.6.242.20)
सुशीलो भगवद्भक्तः सत्यवाग्धर्म्मवाञ्शुचिः । रावणः कुंभकर्णश्च हिमवत्पर्वतोत्तमे ।
suśīlo bhagavadbhaktaḥ satyavāgdharmmavāñśuciḥ rāvaṇaḥ kuṁbhakarṇaśca himavatparvatottame
of good conduct, a devotee of the Lord, truthful, righteous, pure. Ravana and Kumbhakarna, on the best peak of the Himalaya —
Verse 21 (padma.6.242.21)
महोग्रतपसा मां वै पूजयामासतुर्भृशम् । रावणस्त्वथ दुष्टात्मा स्वशिरःकमलैः शुभैः ।
mahogratapasā māṁ vai pūjayāmāsaturbhṛśam rāvaṇastvatha duṣṭātmā svaśiraḥkamalaiḥ śubhaiḥ
worshipped me intensely with most fierce austerities. And Ravana, that evil-souled one, with his own auspicious lotus-heads —
Verse 22 (padma.6.242.22)
पूजयामास मां देवि दारुणेनैव कर्म्मणा । ततस्तमब्रुवं सुभ्रूः प्रहृष्टेनांतरात्मना ।
pūjayāmāsa māṁ devi dāruṇenaiva karmmaṇā tatastamabruvaṁ subhrūḥ prahṛṣṭenāṁtarātmanā
worshipped me, O Goddess, with terrible acts. Then, my inner self pleased, I said to him, O fair-browed one —
Verse 23 (padma.6.242.23)
वरं वृणीष्व मे वत्स यत्ते मनसि वर्त्तते । ततः प्रोवाच दुष्टात्मा देवदानव रक्षसाम् ।
varaṁ vṛṇīṣva me vatsa yatte manasi varttate tataḥ provāca duṣṭātmā devadānava rakṣasām
"Choose a boon from me, my child, whatever is in your mind." Then that evil-souled one spoke: "Grant me immunity from being slain by gods, danavas, and rakshasas —
Verse 24 (padma.6.242.24)
अवध्यत्वं प्रदेहीति सर्वलोकजिगीषया । ततोऽहं दत्तवांस्तस्मै राक्षसाय दुरात्मने ।
avadhyatvaṁ pradehīti sarvalokajigīṣayā tato'haṁ dattavāṁstasmai rākṣasāya durātmane
out of desire to conquer all the worlds." Then I granted to that evil-souled rakshasa —
Verse 25 (padma.6.242.25)
देवदानवयक्षाणामवध्यत्वं वरानने । राक्षसोऽसौ महावीर्यो वरदानात्तु गर्वितः ।
devadānavayakṣāṇāmavadhyatvaṁ varānane rākṣaso'sau mahāvīryo varadānāttu garvitaḥ
immunity from being slain by gods, danavas, and yakshas, O beautiful-faced one. That rakshasa, of great valor, made arrogant by that boon —
Verse 26 (padma.6.242.26)
त्रींल्लोकान्पीडयामास देवदानवमानुषान् । तेन संबाध्यमानाश्च देवा ब्रह्मपुरोगमाः ।
trīṁllokānpīḍayāmāsa devadānavamānuṣān tena saṁbādhyamānāśca devā brahmapurogamāḥ
oppressed the three worlds — gods, danavas, and men. And the gods, oppressed by him, with Brahma at their head —
Verse 27 (padma.6.242.27)
भयार्त्ताः शरणं जग्मुरीश्वरं कमलापतिम् । ज्ञात्वाथ वेदनां तेषामभयाय सनातनः ।
bhayārttāḥ śaraṇaṁ jagmurīśvaraṁ kamalāpatim jñātvātha vedanāṁ teṣāmabhayāya sanātanaḥ
terrified, went for refuge to the Lord, the husband of Kamala. Then, learning of their distress, that eternal one, for their protection —
Verse 28 (padma.6.242.28)
उवाच त्रिदशान्सर्वान्ब्रह्मरुद्रपुरोगमान् । श्रीभगवानुवाच- राज्ञो दशरथस्याहमुत्पत्स्यामि रघोः कुले ।
uvāca tridaśānsarvānbrahmarudrapurogamān śrībhagavānuvāca rājño daśarathasyāhamutpatsyāmi raghoḥ kule
spoke to all the gods, with Brahma and Rudra at their head. Shri Bhagavan said: "I shall be born as the son of King Dasharatha, in the line of Raghu.
Verse 29 (padma.6.242.29)
वधिष्यामि दुरात्मानं रावणं सह बांधवम् । मानुषं वपुरास्थाय हन्मि दैवतकंटकम् ।
vadhiṣyāmi durātmānaṁ rāvaṇaṁ saha bāṁdhavam mānuṣaṁ vapurāsthāya hanmi daivatakaṁṭakam
I shall slay that evil-souled Ravana, together with his kinsmen. Taking a human body, I shall slay this thorn in the side of the gods.
Verse 30 (padma.6.242.30)
नंदिशापाद्भवंतोऽपि वानरत्वमुपागताः । कुरुध्वं मम साहाय्यं गंधर्वाप्सरसोत्तमाः ।
naṁdiśāpādbhavaṁto'pi vānaratvamupāgatāḥ kurudhvaṁ mama sāhāyyaṁ gaṁdharvāpsarasottamāḥ
And you too, through Nandi's curse, having taken the state of monkeys — render me your aid, O best of Gandharvas and Apsaras."
Verse 31 (padma.6.242.31)
रुद्र उवाच- इत्युक्ता देवतास्सर्वा देवदेवेन विष्णुना । वानरत्वमुपागम्य जज्ञिरे पृथिवीतले ।
rudra uvāca ityuktā devatāssarvā devadevena viṣṇunā vānaratvamupāgamya jajñire pṛthivītale
Rudra said: Thus addressed by Vishnu, the god of gods, all the deities, taking the state of monkeys, were born upon the earth.
Verse 32 (padma.6.242.32)
भार्गवेण प्रदत्ता तु महीसागरमेखला । दत्ता महर्षिभिः पूर्वं रघूणां सुमहात्मनाम् ।
bhārgaveṇa pradattā tu mahīsāgaramekhalā dattā maharṣibhiḥ pūrvaṁ raghūṇāṁ sumahātmanām
The earth, girdled by the ocean, given by Bhargava, had formerly been given by the great sages to the great-souled Raghus.
Verse 33 (padma.6.242.33)
वैवस्वतमनोः पुत्रो राज्ञां श्रेष्ठो महाबलः । इक्ष्वाकुरिति विख्यातस्सर्वधर्म्मविदांवरः ।
vaivasvatamanoḥ putro rājñāṁ śreṣṭho mahābalaḥ ikṣvākuriti vikhyātassarvadharmmavidāṁvaraḥ
The son of Vaivasvata Manu, the best of kings, of great strength, renowned as Ikshvaku, the foremost of all knowers of dharma —
Verse 34 (padma.6.242.34)
तदन्वये महातेजा राजा दशरथो बली । अजस्य नृपतेः पुत्रः सत्यवान्शीलवान्शुचिः ।
tadanvaye mahātejā rājā daśaratho balī ajasya nṛpateḥ putraḥ satyavānśīlavānśuciḥ
in his line was the greatly radiant, mighty king Dasharatha, the son of king Aja, truthful, virtuous, pure.
Verse 35 (padma.6.242.35)
स राजा पृथिवीं सर्वां पालयामास वीर्य्यतः । राज्येषु स्थापयामास सर्वान्पार्थिवसत्तमान् ।
sa rājā pṛthivīṁ sarvāṁ pālayāmāsa vīryyataḥ rājyeṣu sthāpayāmāsa sarvānpārthivasattamān
That king ruled the entire earth through his valor. He established all the best of kings in their kingdoms.
Verse 36 (padma.6.242.36)
कोशलस्य नृपस्याथ पुत्री सर्वांगशोभना । कौशल्या नाम तां कन्यामुपयेमे स पार्थिवः ।
kośalasya nṛpasyātha putrī sarvāṁgaśobhanā kauśalyā nāma tāṁ kanyāmupayeme sa pārthivaḥ
Then the daughter of the king of Kosala, lovely in every limb — that maiden named Kausalya — that king married.
Verse 37 (padma.6.242.37)
मागधस्य नृपस्याथ तनया च शुचिस्मिता । सुमित्रा नाम नाम्ना च द्वितीया तस्य भामिनी ।
māgadhasya nṛpasyātha tanayā ca śucismitā sumitrā nāma nāmnā ca dvitīyā tasya bhāminī
Then the sweetly-smiling daughter of the king of Magadha, named Sumitra, became his second wife.
Verse 38 (padma.6.242.38)
तृतीया केकयस्याथ नृपतेर्दुहिता तथा । भार्य्याभूत्पद्मपत्राक्षी केकयी नाम नामतः ।
tṛtīyā kekayasyātha nṛpaterduhitā tathā bhāryyābhūtpadmapatrākṣī kekayī nāma nāmataḥ
The third, likewise, the daughter of king Kekaya, lotus-petal-eyed, named Kaikeyi, became his wife.
Verse 39 (padma.6.242.39)
ताभिः स्म राजा भार्याभिस्तिसृभिर्धर्मसंयुतः । रमयामास काकुत्स्थः पृथिवीं चानुपालयन् ।
tābhiḥ sma rājā bhāryābhistisṛbhirdharmasaṁyutaḥ ramayāmāsa kākutsthaḥ pṛthivīṁ cānupālayan
With those three wives, that righteous Kakutstha took his delight, while ruling over the earth.
Verse 40 (padma.6.242.40)
अयोध्यानाम नगरी सरयूतीर संस्थिता । सर्वरत्नसुसंपूर्णा धनधान्यसमाकुला ।
ayodhyānāma nagarī sarayūtīra saṁsthitā sarvaratnasusaṁpūrṇā dhanadhānyasamākulā
There was a city named Ayodhya, situated on the bank of the Sarayu, filled with every jewel, teeming with wealth and grain,
Verse 41 (padma.6.242.41)
प्राकारगोपुरैर्जुष्टा हेमप्राकारसंकुला । उत्तमैर्नागतुरगैर्महेंद्रस्य यथा पुरी ।
prākāragopurairjuṣṭā hemaprākārasaṁkulā uttamairnāgaturagairmaheṁdrasya yathā purī
adorned with ramparts and gateways, filled with golden walls, with excellent elephants and horses — like the city of great Indra.
Verse 42 (padma.6.242.42)
तस्यां राजा स धर्मात्मा उवास मुनिसत्तमैः । पुरोहितेन विप्रेण वसिष्ठेन महात्मना ।
tasyāṁ rājā sa dharmātmā uvāsa munisattamaiḥ purohitena vipreṇa vasiṣṭhena mahātmanā
There that righteous king dwelt, together with the foremost sages, and with his priest, the great-souled Brahmin Vasishtha.
Verse 43 (padma.6.242.43)
राज्यं चकारयामास सर्वं निहतकंटकम् । यस्मादुत्पत्स्यते तस्यां भगवान्पुरुषोत्तमः ।
rājyaṁ cakārayāmāsa sarvaṁ nihatakaṁṭakam yasmādutpatsyate tasyāṁ bhagavānpuruṣottamaḥ
He ruled his kingdom, entirely free of thorns. Because the Lord Purushottama was to be born in that city —
Verse 44 (padma.6.242.44)
तस्मात्तु नगरी पुण्या साप्ययोध्येति कीर्तिता । नगरस्य परं धाम्नो नाम तस्याप्यभूच्छुभे ।
tasmāttu nagarī puṇyā sāpyayodhyeti kīrtitā nagarasya paraṁ dhāmno nāma tasyāpyabhūcchubhe
therefore that sacred city too is celebrated as "Ayodhya". O auspicious one, the name of the city also became the name of that supreme abode itself —
Verse 45 (padma.6.242.45)
यत्रास्ते भगवान्विष्णुस्तदेव परमं पदम् । तत्र सद्यो भवेन्मोक्षः सर्वकर्म्मनिकृंतनः ।
yatrāste bhagavānviṣṇustadeva paramaṁ padam tatra sadyo bhavenmokṣaḥ sarvakarmmanikṛṁtanaḥ
for wherever the Lord Vishnu dwells, that itself is the supreme abode; there, liberation, the cutter of every karma, occurs instantly.
Verse 46 (padma.6.242.46)
जाते तत्र महाविष्णौ नराः सर्वे मुदं ययुः । स राजा पृथिवीं सर्वां पालयित्वा शुभानने ।
jāte tatra mahāviṣṇau narāḥ sarve mudaṁ yayuḥ sa rājā pṛthivīṁ sarvāṁ pālayitvā śubhānane
When the great Vishnu was born there, all men rejoiced. O auspicious one, that king, having ruled the entire earth,
Verse 47 (padma.6.242.47)
अयजद्वैष्णवेष्ट्या च पुत्रार्थी हरिमच्युतम् । तेन संपूजितः श्रीशो राजा सर्वगतो हरिः ।
ayajadvaiṣṇaveṣṭyā ca putrārthī harimacyutam tena saṁpūjitaḥ śrīśo rājā sarvagato hariḥ
performed a Vaishnava sacrifice, desiring a son, to the unfailing Hari. Duly worshipped by that king, the Lord of Shri, the all-pervading Hari —
Verse 48 (padma.6.242.48)
वैष्णवेन तु यज्ञेन वरदः प्राह केशवः । तस्मिन्नाविरभूदग्नौ यज्ञरूपो हरिस्तदा ।
vaiṣṇavena tu yajñena varadaḥ prāha keśavaḥ tasminnāvirabhūdagnau yajñarūpo haristadā
through that Vaishnava sacrifice, that boon-giver, Keshava, spoke. Then Hari, in sacrificial form, appeared there in the fire —
Verse 49 (padma.6.242.49)
शुद्धजाम्बूनदप्रख्यः शंखचक्रगदाधरः । शुक्लांबरधरः श्रीमान्सर्वभूषणभूषितः ।
śuddhajāmbūnadaprakhyaḥ śaṁkhacakragadādharaḥ śuklāṁbaradharaḥ śrīmānsarvabhūṣaṇabhūṣitaḥ
of the hue of pure gold, bearing conch, discus, and mace, clad in white garments, glorious, adorned with every ornament,
Verse 50 (padma.6.242.50)
श्रीवत्सकौस्तुभोरस्को वनमालाविभूषितः । पद्मपत्रविशालाक्षश्चतुर्बाहुरुदारधीः ।
śrīvatsakaustubhorasko vanamālāvibhūṣitaḥ padmapatraviśālākṣaścaturbāhurudāradhīḥ
his chest bearing Shrivatsa and Kaustubha, adorned with a forest-garland, with wide eyes like lotus leaves, four-armed, of noble mind,
Verse 51 (padma.6.242.51)
सव्यांकस्थ श्रिया सार्द्धमाविरासीद्रमेश्वरः । वरदोस्मीति तं प्राह राजानं भक्तवत्सलः ।
savyāṁkastha śriyā sārddhamāvirāsīdrameśvaraḥ varadosmīti taṁ prāha rājānaṁ bhaktavatsalaḥ
seated with Shri upon his left side — that Lord of Rama appeared, and, loving his devotee, said to the king, "I am the boon-giver."
Verse 52 (padma.6.242.52)
तं दृष्ट्वा सर्वलोकेशं राजा हर्षसमाकुलः । ववंदे भार्य्यया सार्द्धं प्रहृष्टेनांतरात्मना ।
taṁ dṛṣṭvā sarvalokeśaṁ rājā harṣasamākulaḥ vavaṁde bhāryyayā sārddhaṁ prahṛṣṭenāṁtarātmanā
Seeing that Lord of all the worlds, the king, overwhelmed with joy, together with his wife, bowed, his inner self overjoyed.

प्रांजलिः प्रणतो भूत्वा हर्षगद्गदया गिरा । पुत्रत्वं मे भजेत्याह देवदेवं जनार्दनम् ।
prāṁjaliḥ praṇato bhūtvā harṣagadgadayā girā putratvaṁ me bhajetyāha devadevaṁ janārdanam
With joined palms, prostrating, in a voice choked with joy, he said to Janardana, the god of gods, "Become my son."

परित्राणाय साधूनां राक्षसानां वधाय च । मुक्तिं प्रदातुं लोकानां धर्म्मसंस्थापनाय च ।
paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṁ rākṣasānāṁ vadhāya ca muktiṁ pradātuṁ lokānāṁ dharmmasaṁsthāpanāya ca
for the protection of the good, and for the slaying of the rakshasas, to grant liberation to the worlds, and for the establishment of dharma."

महादेव उवाच- इत्युक्त्वा पायसं दिव्यं हेमपात्रस्थितं शृतम् । लक्ष्म्याहस्तस्थितं शुभ्रं पार्थिवाय ददौ हरिः ।
mahādeva uvāca ityuktvā pāyasaṁ divyaṁ hemapātrasthitaṁ śṛtam lakṣmyāhastasthitaṁ śubhraṁ pārthivāya dadau hariḥ
Mahadeva said: Having said this, Hari gave to the king a divine rice-pudding, cooked, held in a golden vessel, held bright in Lakshmi's hand.

विष्णुरुवाच- इदं वै पायसं राजन्पत्नीभ्यस्तव सुव्रत । देहि ते तनयास्तासु उत्पत्स्यन्ते मदंगजाः ।
viṣṇuruvāca idaṁ vai pāyasaṁ rājanpatnībhyastava suvrata dehi te tanayāstāsu utpatsyante madaṁgajāḥ
Vishnu said: "This rice-pudding, O king, O one of good vows — give it to your wives; from it, sons shall be born to them, portions of my own body."

महादेव उवाच- इत्युक्त्वा मुनिभिः सर्वैः स्तूयमानो जनार्दनः । स्वात्मानं दर्शयित्वाथ तथैवांतरधीयत ।
mahādeva uvāca ityuktvā munibhiḥ sarvaiḥ stūyamāno janārdanaḥ svātmānaṁ darśayitvātha tathaivāṁtaradhīyata
Mahadeva said: Having said this, praised by all the sages, Janardana, having shown his own true form, then vanished likewise.

स राजा तत्र दृष्ट्वा च पत्नीं ज्येष्ठां कनीयसीम् । विभज्य पायसं दिव्यं प्रददौ सुसमाहितः ।
sa rājā tatra dṛṣṭvā ca patnīṁ jyeṣṭhāṁ kanīyasīm vibhajya pāyasaṁ divyaṁ pradadau susamāhitaḥ
That king, having seen his eldest and youngest wives there, dividing the divine rice-pudding, with careful attention, distributed it.

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे पत्नी सुमित्रा तस्य मध्यमा । तत्समीपं प्रयाता सा पुत्रकामा सुलोचना ।
etasminnantare patnī sumitrā tasya madhyamā tatsamīpaṁ prayātā sā putrakāmā sulocanā
Meanwhile, his middle wife, Sumitra, sweet-eyed, desiring a son, came near to him.

तां दृष्ट्वा तत्र कौशल्या कैकेयी च सुमध्यमा । अर्द्धमर्द्धं प्रददतुस्ते तस्यै पायसं स्वकम् ।
tāṁ dṛṣṭvā tatra kauśalyā kaikeyī ca sumadhyamā arddhamarddhaṁ pradadatuste tasyai pāyasaṁ svakam
Seeing her there, Kausalya and the slender-waisted Kaikeyi each gave half of their own portion of rice-pudding to her.

तत्प्राश्य पायसं दिव्यं राजपत्न्यः सुमध्यमाः । संपन्नगर्भाः सर्वास्ता विरेजुः शुभ्रवर्च्चसः ।
tatprāśya pāyasaṁ divyaṁ rājapatnyaḥ sumadhyamāḥ saṁpannagarbhāḥ sarvāstā virejuḥ śubhravarccasaḥ
Having eaten that divine rice-pudding, the slender-waisted queens all became pregnant, and shone with radiant splendor.

तासां स्वप्नेषु देवेशः पीतवासा जनार्दनः । शंखचक्रगदापाणिराविर्भूतस्तदा हरिः ।
tāsāṁ svapneṣu deveśaḥ pītavāsā janārdanaḥ śaṁkhacakragadāpāṇirāvirbhūtastadā hariḥ
In their dreams, the Lord of gods, Janardana, clad in yellow, bearing conch, discus, and mace, that Hari, appeared.

the cause of the world's creation, preservation, and dissolution, untouched by affliction, the refuge of all beings, all-pervading, whose form is all beings.

समुत्पन्ने जगन्नाथे देवदुंदुभयो दिवि । विनेदुः पुष्पवर्षाणि ववर्षुः सुरसत्तमाः ।
samutpanne jagannāthe devaduṁdubhayo divi vineduḥ puṣpavarṣāṇi vavarṣuḥ surasattamāḥ
When the Lord of the world was born, the drums of the gods resounded in heaven, and the best of the gods rained down showers of flowers.

प्रजापतिमुखा देवा विमानस्था नभस्तले । तुष्टुवुर्मुनिभिः सार्द्धं हर्षपूर्णांगविह्वलाः ।
prajāpatimukhā devā vimānasthā nabhastale tuṣṭuvurmunibhiḥ sārddhaṁ harṣapūrṇāṁgavihvalāḥ
The gods, with Prajapati at their head, stationed in celestial cars in the sky, praised him together with the sages, their bodies overcome with joy.

जगुर्गंधर्वपतयो ननृतुश्चाप्सरोगणाः । ववुः पुण्यशिवा वाताः सुप्रभोभूद्दिवाकरः ।

The lords of the Gandharvas sang, and the hosts of Apsaras danced; auspicious, gentle winds blew, the sun shone with excellent brightness,

the fires blazed calmly, and the ten directions became clear. Then that king, joyfully seeing his eternal son,

पुरोधसा वसिष्ठेन जातकर्म्मतदाऽकरोत् । नाम चास्मै ददौ रम्यं वसिष्ठो भगवांस्तदा ।
purodhasā vasiṣṭhena jātakarmmatadā'karot nāma cāsmai dadau ramyaṁ vasiṣṭho bhagavāṁstadā
had the birth-rites performed by his family priest Vasishtha. And the Lord Vasishtha then gave him a delightful name.

श्रियः कमलवासिन्या रमणोऽयं महान्प्रभुः । तस्माच्छ्रीराम इत्यस्य नाम सिद्धं पुरातनम् ।
śriyaḥ kamalavāsinyā ramaṇo'yaṁ mahānprabhuḥ tasmācchrīrāma ityasya nāma siddhaṁ purātanam
"This great Lord is the delighter of Shri, who dwells in the lotus; therefore the name 'Shri Rama' is fittingly and anciently established for him.

सहस्रनाम्नां श्रीशस्य तुल्यं मुक्तिप्रदं नृणाम् । विष्णुमासि समुत्पन्नो विष्णुरित्यभिधीयते ।
sahasranāmnāṁ śrīśasya tulyaṁ muktipradaṁ nṛṇām viṣṇumāsi samutpanno viṣṇurityabhidhīyate
"Equal to the thousand names of the Lord of Shri, bestowing liberation on men — since he was born under the auspices of Vishnu, he is designated Vishnu as well."

एवं नामास्य दत्वाथ वसिष्ठो भगवानृषिः । परिणीय नमस्कृत्य स्तुत्वा स्तुतिभिरेव च ।

Having thus given him this name, the Lord-sage Vasishtha, circling him, bowing, and praising him with hymns of praise,

saṁkīrtya nāmasāhasraṁ maṁgalārthaṁ mahātmanaḥ viniryayau mahātejāstasmātpuṇyatamādgṛhāt
reciting the thousand names for the auspiciousness of that great soul, that greatly radiant one went forth from that most sacred house.

राजाथ विप्रमुख्येभ्यो ददौ बहुधनं मुदा । गवामयुतदानं च कारयामास धर्म्मतः ।
rājātha vipramukhyebhyo dadau bahudhanaṁ mudā gavāmayutadānaṁ ca kārayāmāsa dharmmataḥ
Then the king joyfully gave much wealth to the foremost Brahmins, and had ten thousand cows given in donation, according to dharma.

ग्रामाणां शतसाहस्रं ददौ रघुकुलोत्तमः । वस्त्रैराभरणैर्दिव्यैरसंख्येयैर्धनैरपि ।
grāmāṇāṁ śatasāhasraṁ dadau raghukulottamaḥ vastrairābharaṇairdivyairasaṁkhyeyairdhanairapi
That best of the Raghu line gave a hundred thousand villages, and, with divine garments, ornaments, and countless riches,

upon his body she, wide-eyed, her face smiling, saw the entire universe, with its gods, demons, and men, and the fourteen worlds;

in his navel, Brahma and Shiva; in his ears, the auspicious directions; in his eyes, fire and the sun; in his nostrils, the swift-moving wind;

सर्वोपनिषदामर्थं दृष्ट्वा तस्य विभूतयः । कृत्स्ना भीता वरारोहा प्रणम्य च पुनः पुनः। हर्षाश्रुपूर्णनयना प्रांजलिर्वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
sarvopaniṣadāmarthaṁ dṛṣṭvā tasya vibhūtayaḥ kṛtsnā bhītā varārohā praṇamya ca punaḥ punaḥ harṣāśrupūrṇanayanā prāṁjalirvākyamabravīt
seeing his manifold glories, the very meaning of all the Upanishads, that lovely one, entirely terrified, bowing again and again, her eyes full of tears of joy, spoke with joined palms.

कौशल्योवाच- धन्यास्मि देवदेवेश लब्ध्वा त्वां तनयं प्रभो । प्रसीद मे जगन्नाथ पुत्रस्नेहं प्रदर्शय ।
kauśalyovāca dhanyāsmi devadeveśa labdhvā tvāṁ tanayaṁ prabho prasīda me jagannātha putrasnehaṁ pradarśaya
Kausalya said: "I am blessed, O Lord of the gods of gods, having obtained you as my son, O Lord. Be gracious to me, O Lord of the world; show me a mother's love."

ईश्वर उवाच- एवमुक्तो हृषीकेशो मात्रा सर्वगतो हरिः । मायामानुषतां प्राप्य शिशुभावाद्रुरोद सः ।
īśvara uvāca evamukto hṛṣīkeśo mātrā sarvagato hariḥ māyāmānuṣatāṁ prāpya śiśubhāvādruroda saḥ
Ishvara said: Thus addressed, Hrishikesha, the all-pervading Hari, taking on his illusory human nature, wept as an infant would.

अथ प्रमुदिता देवी कौशल्या शुभलक्षणा । पुत्रमालिंग्य हर्षेण स्तन्यं प्रादात्सुमध्यमा ।
atha pramuditā devī kauśalyā śubhalakṣaṇā putramāliṁgya harṣeṇa stanyaṁ prādātsumadhyamā
Then that joyful goddess Kausalya, of auspicious marks, embracing her son with joy, that slender-waisted one, gave him her breast.

तस्याः स्तन्यं पपौ देवो बालभावात्सनातनः । उवास मातुरुत्संगे जगद्भर्ता महाविभुः ।
tasyāḥ stanyaṁ papau devo bālabhāvātsanātanaḥ uvāsa māturutsaṁge jagadbhartā mahāvibhuḥ
That eternal god drank her milk, in his infant guise; the sustainer of the world, that mighty, all-pervading one, rested upon his mother's lap.

देशे तस्मिञ्छुशुभे रम्ये सर्वकामप्रदे नृणाम् । उत्सवं चक्रिरे पौरा हृष्टा जनपदा नराः ।
deśe tasmiñchuśubhe ramye sarvakāmaprade nṛṇām utsavaṁ cakrire paurā hṛṣṭā janapadā narāḥ
In that beautiful, delightful land, granting every desire to men, the citizens celebrated, and the joyful people of the countryside too.

कैकेय्यां भरतो जज्ञे पांचजन्यांशचोदितः । सुमित्रा जनयामास लक्ष्मणं शुभलक्षणम् ।
kaikeyyāṁ bharato jajñe pāṁcajanyāṁśacoditaḥ sumitrā janayāmāsa lakṣmaṇaṁ śubhalakṣaṇam
To Kaikeyi was born Bharata, from a portion of the conch Panchajanya. Sumitra gave birth to Lakshmana, of auspicious marks,

शत्रुघ्नं च महाभागा देवशत्रुप्रतापनम् । अनंतांशेन संभूतो लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा ।
śatrughnaṁ ca mahābhāgā devaśatrupratāpanam anaṁtāṁśena saṁbhūto lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā
and to Shatrughna, that illustrious one, the scourge of the enemies of the gods. Lakshmana, born of a portion of Ananta, was the slayer of enemy heroes;

सुदर्शनांशाच्छत्रुघ्नः संजज्ञेऽमितविक्रमः । ते सर्वे ववृधुस्तत्र वैवस्वतमनोः कुले ।
sudarśanāṁśācchatrughnaḥ saṁjajñe'mitavikramaḥ te sarve vavṛdhustatra vaivasvatamanoḥ kule
Shatrughna, of measureless valor, was born of a portion of Sudarshana. All of them grew up there, in the line of Vaivasvata Manu.

संस्कृतास्ते सुताः सम्यग्वसिष्ठेन महौजसा । अधीतवेदास्ते सर्वे श्रुतवंतस्तथा नृपाः ।
saṁskṛtāste sutāḥ samyagvasiṣṭhena mahaujasā adhītavedāste sarve śrutavaṁtastathā nṛpāḥ
Those sons, duly consecrated by the greatly radiant Vasishtha, all studied the Vedas and became learned princes,

सर्वशास्त्रार्थतत्वज्ञा धनुर्वेदे च निष्ठिताः । बभूवुः परमोदारा लोकानां हर्षवर्द्धनाः ।
sarvaśāstrārthatatvajñā dhanurvede ca niṣṭhitāḥ babhūvuḥ paramodārā lokānāṁ harṣavarddhanāḥ
knowers of the truth of the meaning of all the scriptures, established in the science of archery; they became most generous, increasers of the joy of the worlds.

युग्मं बभूवतुस्तत्र राजानौ रामलक्ष्मणौ । तथा भरतशत्रुघ्नौ तयोर्युग्मं बभूव ह ।
yugmaṁ babhūvatustatra rājānau rāmalakṣmaṇau tathā bharataśatrughnau tayoryugmaṁ babhūva ha
There, Rama and Lakshmana became one pair; and likewise Bharata and Shatrughna became the other pair.

dhṛtvā vakṣasi cārvaṅgī mālāmamlānapaṅkajām sītāmukhe samutpannā bālabhāvena suṁdarī
that lovely-limbed one, wearing upon her chest a garland of unwithering lotuses, appeared through Sita's mouth, beautiful, in the form of a child.

तां दृष्ट्वा जनको राजा कन्यां वेदमयीं शुभाम् । उद्धृत्यापत्यभावेन पुपोष मिथिलापतिः ।

Seeing that maiden, auspicious, made of the essence of the Veda, King Janaka, raising her up, brought her up as his own daughter, that lord of Mithila.

In Janaka's delightful house, that beloved of the Lord of all the worlds, that goddess-queen, grew up for the protection of all the worlds.

Then Vishvamitra, of great austerity, his heart glad, spoke. Vishvamitra said: "Give me Raghava, O king, for the protection of my sacrifice.

साफल्यमस्तु मे यज्ञे राघवस्य समीपतः । तस्माद्रामं रक्षणार्थं दातुमर्हसि भूपते ।
sāphalyamastu me yajñe rāghavasya samīpataḥ tasmādrāmaṁ rakṣaṇārthaṁ dātumarhasi bhūpate
Let my sacrifice attain success through Raghava's presence. Therefore, O lord of the earth, you should give Rama for its protection."

ईश्वर उवाच- तच्छ्रुत्वा मुनिवर्य्यस्य वाक्यं सर्वविदां वरः । प्रददौ मुनिवर्य्याय राघवं सह लक्ष्मणम् ।
īśvara uvāca tacchrutvā munivaryyasya vākyaṁ sarvavidāṁ varaḥ pradadau munivaryyāya rāghavaṁ saha lakṣmaṇam
Ishvara said: Hearing that word of that excellent sage, that best of all the wise gave to the excellent sage Raghava, together with Lakshmana.

आदाय राघवं तत्र विश्वामित्रो महातपाः । स्वमाश्रममभिप्रीतः प्रययौ द्विजसत्तमः ।
ādāya rāghavaṁ tatra viśvāmitro mahātapāḥ svamāśramamabhiprītaḥ prayayau dvijasattamaḥ
Taking Raghava there, Vishvamitra, of great austerity, delighted, that foremost of the twice-born, went to his own hermitage.

ततः प्रहृष्टास्त्रिदशाः प्रयाते रघुसत्तमे । ववृषुः पुष्पवर्षाणि तुष्टुवुश्च महौजसः ।
tataḥ prahṛṣṭāstridaśāḥ prayāte raghusattame vavṛṣuḥ puṣpavarṣāṇi tuṣṭuvuśca mahaujasaḥ
Then the gods, greatly rejoicing when that foremost of the Raghus set forth, rained down showers of flowers and praised that one of great splendor.

अथाजगाम हृष्टात्मा वैनतेयो महाबलः । अदृश्यभूतो भूतानां संप्राप्य रघुसत्तमम् ।
athājagāma hṛṣṭātmā vainateyo mahābalaḥ adṛśyabhūto bhūtānāṁ saṁprāpya raghusattamam
Then came the joyful, mighty Garuda, invisible to all beings, reaching that foremost of the Raghus.

ताभ्यां दिव्ये च धनुषी तूणौ चाक्षयसायकौ । दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि शस्त्राणि दत्वा च प्रययौ द्विजः ।
tābhyāṁ divye ca dhanuṣī tūṇau cākṣayasāyakau divyānyastrāṇi śastrāṇi datvā ca prayayau dvijaḥ
Giving to those two divine bows, quivers with inexhaustible arrows, and divine weapons and missiles, that twice-born bird departed.

तौ रामलक्ष्मणौ वीरौ कौशिकेन महात्मना । गच्छंती ज्ञापितारण्ये राक्षसी घोरदर्शना ।

Those two heroes, Rama and Lakshmana, going, as informed by the great-souled Kaushika, into the forest, encountered a terrible-looking rakshasi —

नाम्ना तु ताडका देवि भार्या सुंदस्य रक्षसः । जघ्नतुस्तां महावीरौ बाणैर्दिव्यधनुश्च्युतैः ।
nāmnā tu tāḍakā devi bhāryā suṁdasya rakṣasaḥ jaghnatustāṁ mahāvīrau bāṇairdivyadhanuścyutaiḥ
named Tataka, O Goddess, wife of the rakshasa Sunda. Those two great heroes slew her with arrows loosed from their divine bows.

निहता राघवेणाथ राक्षसी घोरदर्शना । त्यक्त्वा तनुं घोररूपां दिव्यरूपा बभूव सा ।
nihatā rāghaveṇātha rākṣasī ghoradarśanā tyaktvā tanuṁ ghorarūpāṁ divyarūpā babhūva sā
Slain by Raghava, that terrible-looking rakshasi, casting off her terrible form, became of divine form.

जाज्वल्यमानावपुषा सर्वाभरणविभूषिता । प्रययौ वैष्णवं लोकं प्रणम्य च रघूत्तमौ ।
jājvalyamānāvapuṣā sarvābharaṇavibhūṣitā prayayau vaiṣṇavaṁ lokaṁ praṇamya ca raghūttamau
Her body radiant, adorned with every ornament, she went to the Vaishnava world, having bowed to those two foremost of the Raghus.

तां हत्वा राघवः श्रीमान्कौशिकस्याश्रमं शुभम् । प्रविवेश महातेजा लक्ष्मणेन महात्मना ।
tāṁ hatvā rāghavaḥ śrīmānkauśikasyāśramaṁ śubham praviveśa mahātejā lakṣmaṇena mahātmanā
Having slain her, the glorious Raghava, that greatly radiant one, entered the auspicious hermitage of Kaushika, together with the great-souled Lakshmana.

ततः प्रहृष्टा मुनयः प्रत्युद्गम्य रघूत्तमम् । निवेश्य पूजयामासुरर्घाद्यैः परमात्मने ।
tataḥ prahṛṣṭā munayaḥ pratyudgamya raghūttamam niveśya pūjayāmāsurarghādyaiḥ paramātmane
Then the joyful sages, coming forth to meet that foremost of the Raghus, seating him, worshipped that Supreme Soul with offerings of water and the rest.

कौशिकः कृतदीक्षस्तु यंष्टुं यज्ञमनुत्तमम् । आरेभे मुनिभिः सार्द्धं विधिना मुनिसत्तमः ।
kauśikaḥ kṛtadīkṣastu yaṁṣṭuṁ yajñamanuttamam ārebhe munibhiḥ sārddhaṁ vidhinā munisattamaḥ
Kaushika, having taken the consecration, that foremost of sages, began, together with the sages, to duly perform that supreme sacrifice.

वर्त्तमाने महायज्ञे मारीचो नाम राक्षसः । भ्रात्रा सुबाहुना तत्र विघ्नं कर्तुमवस्थितः ।
varttamāne mahāyajñe mārīco nāma rākṣasaḥ bhrātrā subāhunā tatra vighnaṁ kartumavasthitaḥ
While that great sacrifice was in progress, a rakshasa named Maricha, together with his brother Subahu, stood there to cause disruption.

दृष्ट्वा तौ राक्षसौ घोरौ राघवः परवीरहा । जघानैकेन बाणेन सुबाहुं राक्षसेश्वरम् ।
dṛṣṭvā tau rākṣasau ghorau rāghavaḥ paravīrahā jaghānaikena bāṇena subāhuṁ rākṣaseśvaram
Seeing those two terrible rakshasas, Raghava, that slayer of enemy heroes, slew, with a single arrow, Subahu, lord of the rakshasas.

पवनास्त्रेण महता मारीचं स निशाचरम् । सागरे पातयामास शुष्कपर्णमिवानिलः ।
pavanāstreṇa mahatā mārīcaṁ sa niśācaram sāgare pātayāmāsa śuṣkaparṇamivānilaḥ
With the great wind-weapon, he cast that night-wanderer Maricha into the ocean, as the wind casts a dry leaf.

स रामस्य महावीर्य्यं दृष्ट्वा राक्षससत्तमः । न्यस्तशस्त्रस्तपस्तप्तुं प्रययौ महादाश्रमम् ।
sa rāmasya mahāvīryyaṁ dṛṣṭvā rākṣasasattamaḥ nyastaśastrastapastaptuṁ prayayau mahādāśramam
That foremost of rakshasas, seeing Rama's great valor, laying down his weapons, went to a great hermitage to perform austerities.

विश्वामित्रो महातेजाः समाप्ते महति क्रतौ । प्रहृष्टमनसा तत्र पूजयामास राघवम् ।

Vishvamitra, that greatly radiant one, when the great sacrifice was completed, with a joyful heart, worshipped Raghava there.

smelling his head, that foremost of sages praised him. Meanwhile, the king, lord of Mithila —

began to perform the Vajapeya sacrifice, together with the foremost sages. All of them, with Vishvamitra at their head, went to see it —

Ahalya, became blessed through the touch of Raghunatha's foot. Then, having reached the city of Mithila, those foremost of sages,

manifest like a lamp lit from a lamp, with gentleness and other supreme qualities — seeing that Raghunatha, Janaka, his heart joyful,

परेशमेव तं मेने रामं दशरथात्मजम् । पूजयामास काकुत्स्थं धन्योस्मीति ब्रुवन्नृपः ।
pareśameva taṁ mene rāmaṁ daśarathātmajam pūjayāmāsa kākutsthaṁ dhanyosmīti bruvannṛpaḥ
regarded that Rama, son of Dasharatha, as the Supreme Lord himself. That king worshipped Kakutstha, saying, "I am blessed."

प्रसादं वासुदेवस्य विष्णोर्मेने नरेश्वरः । प्रदातुं दुहितां तस्मै मनसा चिंतयन्प्रभुः ।
prasādaṁ vāsudevasya viṣṇormene nareśvaraḥ pradātuṁ duhitāṁ tasmai manasā ciṁtayanprabhuḥ
That lord of men regarded it as the grace of Vasudeva Vishnu; that ruler, in his mind, resolved to give his daughter to him.

आत्मजौ रघुवंशस्य ज्ञात्वा तत्र नृपोत्तमः । पूजयामास धर्मेण वस्त्रैराभरणैः शुभैः ।
ātmajau raghuvaṁśasya jñātvā tatra nṛpottamaḥ pūjayāmāsa dharmeṇa vastrairābharaṇaiḥ śubhaiḥ
Knowing them to be the two sons of the Raghu line, that best of kings there duly worshipped them with garments and auspicious ornaments.

ऋषीन्समर्चयामास मधुपर्कादिपूजनैः । ततोऽवसाने यज्ञस्य रामो राजीवलोचनः ।

He worshipped the sages with the madhuparka and other rites. Then, at the conclusion of the sacrifice, Rama, the lotus-eyed —

भंक्त्वा शैवं धनुर्दिव्यं जितवान्जनकात्मजाम् । अथासौ वीर्यशुल्केन महता परितोषितः ।
bhaṁktvā śaivaṁ dhanurdivyaṁ jitavānjanakātmajām athāsau vīryaśulkena mahatā paritoṣitaḥ
breaking the divine bow of Shiva, won the daughter of Janaka. Then that king, greatly pleased by this bride-price of valor,

मुदा धरणिजां तस्मै प्रददौ मिथिलाधिपः । केशवाय श्रियमिव यथापूर्वं महार्णवः ।
mudā dharaṇijāṁ tasmai pradadau mithilādhipaḥ keśavāya śriyamiva yathāpūrvaṁ mahārṇavaḥ
joyfully gave to him that earth-born daughter, that lord of Mithila — as, of old, the great ocean gave Shri to Keshava.

स दूतं प्रेषयामास राघवं मिथिलाधिपः । पुत्राभ्यां सह धर्मात्मा मिथिलायां विवेश ह ।
sa dūtaṁ preṣayāmāsa rāghavaṁ mithilādhipaḥ putrābhyāṁ saha dharmātmā mithilāyāṁ viveśa ha
That lord of Mithila sent a messenger. That righteous king, together with his two other sons, entered Mithila.

वसिष्ठवामदेवाद्यैः प्रीतैः सह महीपतिः । उवास नगरे रम्ये जनकस्य रघूत्तमः ।
vasiṣṭhavāmadevādyaiḥ prītaiḥ saha mahīpatiḥ uvāsa nagare ramye janakasya raghūttamaḥ
Together with the pleased Vasishtha, Vamadeva, and the others, that lord of the earth, that foremost of the Raghus, dwelt in Janaka's delightful city.

तस्मिन्नेव शुभे काले रामस्य धरणीसुताम् । विवाहमकरोद्राजा मिथिलेन समर्चितः ।
tasminneva śubhe kāle rāmasya dharaṇīsutām vivāhamakarodrājā mithilena samarcitaḥ
At that very auspicious time, the king, duly honored by the king of Mithila, performed the marriage of Rama with the earth-born daughter.

लक्ष्मणस्योर्मिलां नाम कन्यां जनकसंभवाम् । जनकस्यानुजस्याथ तनये शुभवर्चसी ।

[The king married] to Lakshmana the maiden named Urmila, born of Janaka. And then the two daughters of Janaka's younger brother, of auspicious splendor —

मांडवी श्रुतकीर्त्तिश्च सर्वलक्षणलक्षिते । भरतस्य च सौमित्रेर्विवाहमकरोन्नृपः ।
māṁḍavī śrutakīrttiśca sarvalakṣaṇalakṣite bharatasya ca saumitrervivāhamakaronnṛpaḥ
Mandavi and Shrutakirti, endowed with every auspicious mark — the king performed the marriages of Bharata and of Saumitri with them.

Having completed the marriage rites there, that mighty king Dasharatha, glorious, surrounded by citizens and countryfolk, set out for Ayodhya,

पारिबर्हं समादाय मैथिलेन च पूजितः । ससुतः सस्नुषः साश्वः सगजः सबलानुगः ।
pāribarhaṁ samādāya maithilena ca pūjitaḥ sasutaḥ sasnuṣaḥ sāśvaḥ sagajaḥ sabalānugaḥ
receiving the dowry-gifts, honored by the king of Mithila, together with his sons, daughters-in-law, horses, elephants, and attendant troops.

तदध्वनि महावीर्य्यो जामदग्निः प्रतापवान् । गृहीत्वा परशुं चापं संक्रुद्ध इव केसरी ।
tadadhvani mahāvīryyo jāmadagniḥ pratāpavān gṛhītvā paraśuṁ cāpaṁ saṁkruddha iva kesarī
On that road, the greatly valorous, mighty Jamadagnya, taking up his axe and bow, like an enraged lion,

अभ्यधावच्च काकुत्स्थं योद्धुकामो नृपांतकः । संप्राप्य राघवं दृष्ट्वा वचनं प्राह भार्गवः ।
abhyadhāvacca kākutsthaṁ yoddhukāmo nṛpāṁtakaḥ saṁprāpya rāghavaṁ dṛṣṭvā vacanaṁ prāha bhārgavaḥ
that destroyer of kings, wishing to fight, rushed toward Kakutstha. Reaching Raghava, seeing him, that descendant of Bhrigu spoke this word.

परशुराम उवाच- रामराम महाबाहो शृणुष्व वचनं मम । बहुशः पार्थिवान्हत्वा संयुगे भूरिविक्रमान् ।
paraśurāma uvāca rāmarāma mahābāho śṛṇuṣva vacanaṁ mama bahuśaḥ pārthivānhatvā saṁyuge bhūrivikramān
Parashurama said: "Rama, Rama, mighty-armed one, listen to my words. Having slain, many times, in battle, kings of great valor,

ब्राह्मणेभ्यो महीं दत्वा तपस्तप्तुमहं गतः । तव वीर्यबलं श्रुत्वा त्वया योद्धुमिहागतः ।
brāhmaṇebhyo mahīṁ datvā tapastaptumahaṁ gataḥ tava vīryabalaṁ śrutvā tvayā yoddhumihāgataḥ
having given the earth to the Brahmins, I went to perform austerities. Hearing of your strength and valor, I have come here to fight you.
Verse 159 (padma.6.242.159)
इक्ष्वाकवो न वध्या मे मातामहकुलोद्भवाः । वीर्य्यं क्षत्रबलं श्रुत्वा न शक्यं सहितुं मम ।
ikṣvākavo na vadhyā me mātāmahakulodbhavāḥ vīryyaṁ kṣatrabalaṁ śrutvā na śakyaṁ sahituṁ mama
The Ikshvakus are not to be slain by me, being born of my maternal grandfather's line — yet hearing of your valor and Kshatriya strength, my pride cannot tolerate it —

रौद्रं चापं दुराधर्षं भज्यमानां त्वया नृप । तस्माद्वदान्य युद्धं मे दीयतां रघुसत्तम ।
raudraṁ cāpaṁ durādharṣaṁ bhajyamānāṁ tvayā nṛpa tasmādvadānya yuddhaṁ me dīyatāṁ raghusattama
that terrible, unassailable bow was broken by you, O king. Therefore, O generous one, O foremost of the Raghus, give me battle.
Verse 161 (padma.6.242.161)
इदं तु वैष्णवं चापं तेन तुल्यमरिंदम । आरोपय स्ववीर्येण निर्जितोस्मि त्वयैव हि ।
idaṁ tu vaiṣṇavaṁ cāpaṁ tena tulyamariṁdama āropaya svavīryeṇa nirjitosmi tvayaiva hi
O tamer of foes, here is this Vaishnava bow, equal to that one. String it with your own strength — if you do so, I am indeed conquered by you.
Verse 162 (padma.6.242.162)
अथवा त्यज शस्त्राणि पुरस्ताद्बलिनो मम । शरणं भज काकुत्स्थ कातरोस्यथ चेतसी ।
athavā tyaja śastrāṇi purastādbalino mama śaraṇaṁ bhaja kākutstha kātarosyatha cetasī
Or else, O Kakutstha, lay down your weapons before me, the stronger one; take refuge, if your heart is faint."
Verse 163 (padma.6.242.163)
ईश्वर उवाच- एवमुक्तस्तु काकुत्स्थो भार्गवेण प्रतापवान् । तच्चापं तस्य जग्राह तच्छक्तिं वैष्णवीमपि ।
īśvara uvāca evamuktastu kākutstho bhārgaveṇa pratāpavān taccāpaṁ tasya jagrāha tacchaktiṁ vaiṣṇavīmapi
Ishvara said: Thus addressed by that descendant of Bhrigu, that mighty Kakutstha took hold of that bow, and its Vaishnava power too.
Verse 164 (padma.6.242.164)
शक्त्या वियुक्तस्स तदा जामदग्निः प्रतापवान् । निर्वीर्यो नष्टतेजाभूत्कर्म्महीनो यथा द्विजः ।
śaktyā viyuktassa tadā jāmadagniḥ pratāpavān nirvīryo naṣṭatejābhūtkarmmahīno yathā dvijaḥ
Deprived of that power, that mighty Jamadagnya then became devoid of valor, his splendor destroyed, like a Brahmin without his ritual duties.
Verse 165 (padma.6.242.165)
विनष्टतेज संदृष्ट्वा भार्गवं नृपसत्तमाः । साधुसध्विति काकुत्स्थं प्रशशंसुर्मुहुर्मुहुः ।
vinaṣṭateja saṁdṛṣṭvā bhārgavaṁ nṛpasattamāḥ sādhusadhviti kākutsthaṁ praśaśaṁsurmuhurmuhuḥ
Seeing that descendant of Bhrigu, his splendor destroyed, the best of kings praised Kakutstha again and again, saying "Well done, well done!"
Verse 166 (padma.6.242.166)
काकुत्स्थस्तन्महच्चापं गृहीत्वारोप्य लीलया । संधाय बाणं तच्चापे भार्गवं प्राह विस्मितम् ।
kākutsthastanmahaccāpaṁ gṛhītvāropya līlayā saṁdhāya bāṇaṁ taccāpe bhārgavaṁ prāha vismitam
Kakutstha, taking up that great bow, stringing it with ease, fitting an arrow to that bow, spoke to that astonished descendant of Bhrigu.

राम उवाच- अनेन शरमुख्येन किं कर्त्तव्यं तव द्विज । छेद्मि लोकमिमं चाधः स्वर्गं वा हन्मि ते तपः ।
rāma uvāca anena śaramukhyena kiṁ karttavyaṁ tava dvija chedmi lokamimaṁ cādhaḥ svargaṁ vā hanmi te tapaḥ
Rama said: "What must be done with this excellent arrow regarding you, O Brahmin? Shall I sever this lower world, or shall I destroy your heavenly merit gained through austerity?"

ईश्वर उवाच- तन्दृष्ट्वा घोरसंकाशं बाणं रामस्य भार्गवः । ज्ञात्वा तं परमात्मानं प्रहृष्टो राममब्रवीत् ।
īśvara uvāca tandṛṣṭvā ghorasaṁkāśaṁ bāṇaṁ rāmasya bhārgavaḥ jñātvā taṁ paramātmānaṁ prahṛṣṭo rāmamabravīt
Ishvara said: Seeing that terrible-looking arrow of Rama, that descendant of Bhrigu, recognizing him as the Supreme Soul, joyfully said to Rama.

परशुराम उवाच- रामराम महाबाहो न वेद्मि त्वां सनातनम् । जानाम्यद्यैव काकुत्स्थ तव वीर्य्यगुणादिभिः ।
paraśurāma uvāca rāmarāma mahābāho na vedmi tvāṁ sanātanam jānāmyadyaiva kākutstha tava vīryyaguṇādibhiḥ
Parashurama said: "Rama, Rama, mighty-armed one, I did not know you, the eternal one. I know now, this very day, O Kakutstha, through your valor and other qualities —

त्वमादिपुरुषः साक्षात्परब्रह्मपरोऽव्ययः । त्वमनंतो महाविष्णुर्वासुदेवः परात्परः ।
tvamādipuruṣaḥ sākṣātparabrahmaparo'vyayaḥ tvamanaṁto mahāviṣṇurvāsudevaḥ parātparaḥ
you are the primeval Person, directly the Supreme Brahman, the highest, imperishable one. You are the infinite great Vishnu, Vasudeva, higher than the highest.

नारायणस्त्वं श्रीशस्त्वमीश्वरस्त्वं त्रयीमयः । त्वं कालस्त्वं जगत्सर्वमकाराख्यस्त्वमेव च ।
nārāyaṇastvaṁ śrīśastvamīśvarastvaṁ trayīmayaḥ tvaṁ kālastvaṁ jagatsarvamakārākhyastvameva ca
You are Narayana, you are the Lord of Shri, you are the Lord, of the essence of the threefold Veda. You are Time, you are the entire universe, and you are the one designated by the syllable 'A'.

स्रष्टा धाता च संहर्त्ता त्वमेव परमेश्वरः । त्वमचिंत्यो महद्भूतरूपस्त्वं तु मनुर्महान् ।
sraṣṭā dhātā ca saṁharttā tvameva parameśvaraḥ tvamaciṁtyo mahadbhūtarūpastvaṁ tu manurmahān
You alone are the creator, sustainer, and destroyer, the Supreme Lord. You are inconceivable, of the form of the great elements; you are the great Manu.
Verse 173 (padma.6.242.173)
चतुःषट्पंचगुणवांस्त्वमेव पुरुषोत्तमः । त्वं यज्ञस्त्वं वषट्कारस्त्वमोंकारस्त्रयीमयः ।
catuḥṣaṭpaṁcaguṇavāṁstvameva puruṣottamaḥ tvaṁ yajñastvaṁ vaṣaṭkārastvamoṁkārastrayīmayaḥ
Endowed with the four, the six, the five qualities, you alone are Purushottama. You are the sacrifice, you are the exclamation Vashat, you are the syllable Om, of the essence of the threefold Veda.

व्यक्ताव्यक्तस्वरूपस्त्वं गुणभृन्निर्ग्गुणः परः । स्तोतुं त्वाहमशक्तश्च वेदानामप्यगोचरम् ।
vyaktāvyaktasvarūpastvaṁ guṇabhṛnnirgguṇaḥ paraḥ stotuṁ tvāhamaśaktaśca vedānāmapyagocaram
Your true nature is both manifest and unmanifest; you bear the gunas yet are beyond them, supreme. I am unable to praise you, who are beyond the reach even of the Vedas.

यच्चापलत्वं कृतवांस्त्वां युयुत्सुतया प्रभो । तत्क्षंतव्यं त्वया नाथ कृपया केवलेन तु ।
yaccāpalatvaṁ kṛtavāṁstvāṁ yuyutsutayā prabho tatkṣaṁtavyaṁ tvayā nātha kṛpayā kevalena tu
Whatever rashness I have shown toward you, O Lord, in my desire to fight — let that be forgiven by you, O Master, solely out of grace.

तव शक्त्या नृपान्सर्वाञ्जित्वा दत्वा महीं द्विजान् । त्वत्प्रसादवशादेव शांतिमाप्नोति नैष्ठिकीम् ।
tava śaktyā nṛpānsarvāñjitvā datvā mahīṁ dvijān tvatprasādavaśādeva śāṁtimāpnoti naiṣṭhikīm
By your power, having conquered all the kings and given the earth to the Brahmins, by your grace alone, I have attained final peace."

ईश्वर उवाच- एवमुक्त्वा तु काकुत्स्थं जामदग्निर्महातपाः । परिणीय नमस्कृत्वा राघवं लोकरक्षकम् ।

Ishvara said: Having thus spoken to Kakutstha, Jamadagnya, of great austerity, circling him, bowing to Raghava, protector of the world,

शतक्रतुकृतं स्वर्गं तदस्त्राय न्यवेदयत् । राघवोऽथ महातेजा ववंदे तं महामुनिम् ।
śatakratukṛtaṁ svargaṁ tadastrāya nyavedayat rāghavo'tha mahātejā vavaṁde taṁ mahāmunim
consigned to that weapon the heaven earned by his hundred sacrifices. Then Raghava, that greatly radiant one, bowed to that great sage.

विधिवत्पूजयामास पाद्यार्घाचमनादिभिः । तेन संपूजितस्तत्र जामदग्निर्महातपाः ।
vidhivatpūjayāmāsa pādyārghācamanādibhiḥ tena saṁpūjitastatra jāmadagnirmahātapāḥ
He duly worshipped him with foot-water, offering-water, sipping-water, and the rest. Duly honored there by him, Jamadagnya, of great austerity —

तपस्तप्तुं ययौ रम्यं नरनारायणाश्रमम् । राजा दशरथः सोऽथ पुत्रैर्दारसमन्वितैः ।

रमयामास धर्मात्मा नारायण इव श्रिया । तस्मिन्नेव तु राजाथ काले दशरथः सुतम् ।

that righteous soul, took his delight, as Narayana does with Shri. At that very time, King Dasharatha wished —

ज्येष्ठं राज्येन संयोक्तुमैच्छत्प्रीत्या महीपतिः । तस्य भार्याथ कैकेयी पुरा दत्तवरा प्रिया ।
jyeṣṭhaṁ rājyena saṁyoktumaicchatprītyā mahīpatiḥ tasya bhāryātha kaikeyī purā dattavarā priyā
that lord of the earth, out of love, wished to invest his eldest son with the kingdom. Then his beloved wife Kaikeyi, to whom he had formerly granted boons,

अयाचत नृपश्रेष्ठं भरतस्याभिषेचनम् । विवासनं च रामस्य वत्सराणि चतुर्दश ।
ayācata nṛpaśreṣṭhaṁ bharatasyābhiṣecanam vivāsanaṁ ca rāmasya vatsarāṇi caturdaśa
entreated that best of kings for the coronation of Bharata, and the banishment of Rama for fourteen years.

स राजा सत्यवचनाद्रामं राज्यादथोः सुतम् । विवासयामास तदा दुःखेन हतचेतनः ।
sa rājā satyavacanādrāmaṁ rājyādathoḥ sutam vivāsayāmāsa tadā duḥkhena hatacetanaḥ
That king, bound by his truthful word, then, his mind overcome with sorrow, banished Rama, his son, from the kingdom.

शक्तोऽपि राघवस्तस्मिन्राज्यं संत्यज्य धर्मतः । दशग्रीववधार्थाय पितुर्वचनहेतुना ।
śakto'pi rāghavastasminrājyaṁ saṁtyajya dharmataḥ daśagrīvavadhārthāya piturvacanahetunā
Though capable, Raghava, righteously forsaking that kingdom, for the sake of slaying Dashagriva, and for the sake of his father's word,

वनं जगाम काकुत्स्थो लक्ष्मणेन च सीतया । राजा पुत्रवियोगार्त्तः शोकेन च ममार सः ।
vanaṁ jagāma kākutstho lakṣmaṇena ca sītayā rājā putraviyogārttaḥ śokena ca mamāra saḥ
that Kakutstha went to the forest, together with Lakshmana and Sita. The king, tormented by separation from his son, died of grief.
Verse 189 (padma.6.242.189)
नियुज्यमानो भरतस्तस्मिन्राज्ये समंत्रिभिः । नैच्छद्राज्यं स धर्म्मात्मा सौभ्रात्रमनुदर्शयन् ।
niyujyamāno bharatastasminrājye samaṁtribhiḥ naicchadrājyaṁ sa dharmmātmā saubhrātramanudarśayan
Bharata, being urged to that kingdom by the ministers, that righteous soul did not desire the kingdom, displaying his brotherly love —

वनमागम्य काकुत्स्थमयाचद्भ्रातरं ततः । रामस्तु पितुरादेशान्नैच्छद्राज्यमरिंदमः ।
vanamāgamya kākutsthamayācadbhrātaraṁ tataḥ rāmastu piturādeśānnaicchadrājyamariṁdamaḥ
coming to the forest, he entreated his brother Kakutstha to return. But Rama, that tamer of foes, on account of his father's command, did not desire the kingdom.
Verse 191 (padma.6.242.191)
स्वपादुके ददौ तस्मै भक्त्या सोऽप्यग्रहीत्तथा । रामस्य पादुके राज्यमवाप्य भरतः शुभे ।
svapāduke dadau tasmai bhaktyā so'pyagrahīttathā rāmasya pāduke rājyamavāpya bharataḥ śubhe
He gave him his own sandals; and he, with devotion, accepted them likewise. O auspicious one, Bharata, having obtained the kingdom, through Rama's sandals —
Verse 192 (padma.6.242.192)
प्रत्यहं गंधपुष्पैश्च पूजयन्कैकयीसुतः । तपश्चरणयुक्तेन तस्मिंस्तस्थौ नृपोत्तमः ।
pratyahaṁ gaṁdhapuṣpaiśca pūjayankaikayīsutaḥ tapaścaraṇayuktena tasmiṁstasthau nṛpottamaḥ
worshipping them daily with fragrance and flowers, that son of Kaikeyi, that best of kings, dwelt there, engaged in the practice of austerity.
Verse 193 (padma.6.242.193)
यावदागमनं तस्य राघवस्य महात्मनः । तावद्व्रतपराः सर्वे बभूवुः पुरवासिनः ।
yāvadāgamanaṁ tasya rāghavasya mahātmanaḥ tāvadvrataparāḥ sarve babhūvuḥ puravāsinaḥ
Until the return of that great-souled Raghava, all the city-dwellers remained devoted to vows.
Verse 194 (padma.6.242.194)
राघवश्चित्रकूटाद्रौ भरद्वाजाश्रमे शुभे । रमयामास वैदेह्या मन्दाकिन्या जले शुभे ।
rāghavaścitrakūṭādrau bharadvājāśrame śubhe ramayāmāsa vaidehyā mandākinyā jale śubhe
Raghava, on the auspicious Mount Chitrakuta, at Bharadvaja's hermitage, took his delight with Vaidehi, in the auspicious waters of the Mandakini.
Verse 195 (padma.6.242.195)
कदाचिदंके वैदेह्याः शेते रामो महामनाः । ऐंद्रिः काकस्समागम्य तस्मिन्नेव चचार ह ।
kadācidaṁke vaidehyāḥ śete rāmo mahāmanāḥ aiṁdriḥ kākassamāgamya tasminneva cacāra ha
Once, that great-minded Rama lay resting on Vaidehi's lap. A crow, Indra's son, roaming there, came near, disguised.
Verse 196 (padma.6.242.196)
स दृष्ट्वा जानकीं तत्र कंदर्प्पशरपीडितः । विददार नखैस्तीक्ष्णैः पीनोन्नतपयोधरम् ।
sa dṛṣṭvā jānakīṁ tatra kaṁdarppaśarapīḍitaḥ vidadāra nakhaistīkṣṇaiḥ pīnonnatapayodharam
Seeing Janaki there, tormented by the arrows of Kama, he tore, with sharp claws, her full, raised breast.
Verse 197 (padma.6.242.197)
तं दृष्ट्वा वायसं रामः कुशं जग्राह पाणिना । ब्रह्मणास्त्रेण संयोज्य चिक्षेप धरणीधरः ।
taṁ dṛṣṭvā vāyasaṁ rāmaḥ kuśaṁ jagrāha pāṇinā brahmaṇāstreṇa saṁyojya cikṣepa dharaṇīdharaḥ
Seeing that crow, Rama took a blade of kusha grass in hand, and, joining it with the Brahma weapon, that sustainer of the earth hurled it.
Verse 198 (padma.6.242.198)
तं तृणं घोरसंकाशं ज्वालारचितविग्रहम् । दृष्ट्वा काकः प्रदुद्राव विमुंचन्कातरं स्वरम् ।
taṁ tṛṇaṁ ghorasaṁkāśaṁ jvālāracitavigraham dṛṣṭvā kākaḥ pradudrāva vimuṁcankātaraṁ svaram
Seeing that blade of grass, terrible to behold, its form composed of flame, the crow fled, uttering a fearful cry.
Verse 199 (padma.6.242.199)
तं काकं प्रत्यनुययौ रामस्यास्त्रं सुदारुणम् । वायसस्त्रिषुलोकेषु बभ्राम भयपीडितः ।
taṁ kākaṁ pratyanuyayau rāmasyāstraṁ sudāruṇam vāyasastriṣulokeṣu babhrāma bhayapīḍitaḥ
That most terrible weapon of Rama pursued that crow. The crow wandered through the three worlds, tormented by fear.
Verse 200 (padma.6.242.200)
यत्र यत्र ययौ काकः शरणार्थी स वायसः । तत्र तत्र तदस्त्रं तु प्रविवेश भयावहम् ।
yatra yatra yayau kākaḥ śaraṇārthī sa vāyasaḥ tatra tatra tadastraṁ tu praviveśa bhayāvaham
Wherever that crow went, seeking refuge, there too that fearsome weapon followed, entering that place.
Verse 201 (padma.6.242.201)
ब्रह्माणमिंद्रं रुद्रं च यमं वरुणमेव च । शरणार्थी जगामाशु वायसः शस्त्रपीडितः ।
brahmāṇamiṁdraṁ rudraṁ ca yamaṁ varuṇameva ca śaraṇārthī jagāmāśu vāyasaḥ śastrapīḍitaḥ
Seeking refuge, that crow, tormented by the weapon, went swiftly to Brahma, Indra, Rudra, Yama, and likewise Varuna.
Verse 202 (padma.6.242.202)
तं दृष्ट्वा वायसं सर्वे रुद्राद्या देव दानवाः । न शक्ताः स्म वयं त्रातुमिति प्राहुर्मनीषिणः । अथ प्रोवाच भगवान्ब्रह्मा त्रिभुवनेश्वरः ।
taṁ dṛṣṭvā vāyasaṁ sarve rudrādyā deva dānavāḥ na śaktāḥ sma vayaṁ trātumiti prāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ atha provāca bhagavānbrahmā tribhuvaneśvaraḥ
Seeing that crow, all the gods and danavas, headed by Rudra, those wise ones, said, "We are not able to protect you." Then the Lord Brahma, ruler of the three worlds, spoke.

ब्रह्मोवाच- भो भो बलिभुजां श्रेष्ठ तमेव शरणं व्रज । स एव रक्षकः श्रीमान्सर्वेषां करुणानिधिः ।
brahmovāca bho bho balibhujāṁ śreṣṭha tameva śaraṇaṁ vraja sa eva rakṣakaḥ śrīmānsarveṣāṁ karuṇānidhiḥ
Brahma said: "O best of birds, go for refuge to him alone. He alone, glorious, is the protector, the treasury of compassion for all.
Verse 204 (padma.6.242.204)
रक्षत्येव क्षमासारो वत्सलं शरणागतान् । ईश्वरः सर्वभूतानां सौशील्यादिगुणान्वितः ।
rakṣatyeva kṣamāsāro vatsalaṁ śaraṇāgatān īśvaraḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ sauśīlyādiguṇānvitaḥ
That essence of forbearance surely protects, with affection, those who come to him for refuge. He is the Lord of all beings, endowed with gentleness and other qualities.
Verse 205 (padma.6.242.205)
रक्षिता जीवलोकस्य पिता माता सखा सुहृत् । शरणं व्रज देवेशं नान्यत्र शरणं द्विज ।
rakṣitā jīvalokasya pitā mātā sakhā suhṛt śaraṇaṁ vraja deveśaṁ nānyatra śaraṇaṁ dvija
He is the protector of the world of living beings, its father, mother, friend, and well-wisher. Go for refuge to that Lord of gods; there is no refuge elsewhere."

महादेव उवाच- इत्युक्तस्तेन बलिभुग्ब्रह्मणा रघुनंदनम् । उपेत्य सहसा भूमौ निपपात भयातुरः ।
mahādeva uvāca ityuktastena balibhugbrahmaṇā raghunaṁdanam upetya sahasā bhūmau nipapāta bhayāturaḥ
Mahadeva said: Thus addressed by Brahma, that eater of offerings, approaching that delight of the Raghus, fell suddenly to the ground, stricken with fear.
Verse 207 (padma.6.242.207)
प्राणसंशयमापन्नं दृष्ट्वा सीताथ वायसम् । त्राहित्राहीति भर्तारमुवाच विनयाद्विभुम् ।
prāṇasaṁśayamāpannaṁ dṛṣṭvā sītātha vāyasam trāhitrāhīti bhartāramuvāca vinayādvibhum
Seeing that crow, brought to the point of death, Sita then humbly said to her all-pervading husband, "Save him, save him!"
Verse 208 (padma.6.242.208)
पुरतः पतितं देवी धरण्यां वायसं तदा । तच्छिरः पादयोस्तस्य योजयामास जानकी ।
purataḥ patitaṁ devī dharaṇyāṁ vāyasaṁ tadā tacchiraḥ pādayostasya yojayāmāsa jānakī
The goddess Janaki then placed the head of that crow, fallen before her upon the ground, at his feet.
Verse 209 (padma.6.242.209)
समुत्थाप्य करेणाथ कृपापीयूषसागरः । ररक्ष रामो गुणवान् वायसं दययार्दितः ।
samutthāpya kareṇātha kṛpāpīyūṣasāgaraḥ rarakṣa rāmo guṇavān vāyasaṁ dayayārditaḥ
Raising him up with his hand, that ocean of the nectar of compassion, that virtuous Rama, his heart softened by mercy, protected the crow.
Verse 210 (padma.6.242.210)
तमाह वायसं रामो मा भैरिति दयानिधिः । अभयं ते प्रदास्यामि गच्छ गच्छ यथासुखम् ।
tamāha vāyasaṁ rāmo mā bhairiti dayānidhiḥ abhayaṁ te pradāsyāmi gaccha gaccha yathāsukham
That treasury of compassion, Rama, said to the crow, "Do not fear. I shall grant you fearlessness. Go, go, as you please."
Verse 211 (padma.6.242.211)
प्रणम्य राघवायाथ सीतायै च मुहुर्मुहुः । स्वर्ल्लोकं प्रययावाशु राघवेण च रक्षितः ।
praṇamya rāghavāyātha sītāyai ca muhurmuhuḥ svarllokaṁ prayayāvāśu rāghaveṇa ca rakṣitaḥ
Bowing to Raghava and to Sita again and again, protected by Raghava, he swiftly went to the heavenly world.
Verse 212 (padma.6.242.212)
ततो रामस्तु वैदेह्या लक्ष्मणेन च धीमता । उवास चित्रकूटाद्रौ स्तूयमानो महर्षिभिः ।
tato rāmastu vaidehyā lakṣmaṇena ca dhīmatā uvāsa citrakūṭādrau stūyamāno maharṣibhiḥ
Then Rama, together with Vaidehi and the wise Lakshmana, dwelt on Mount Chitrakuta, praised by the great sages.

तस्मिन्संपूज्यमानस्तु भरद्वाजेन राघवः । जगामात्रेस्सुविपुलमाश्रमं रघुसत्तमः ।
tasminsaṁpūjyamānastu bharadvājena rāghavaḥ jagāmātressuvipulamāśramaṁ raghusattamaḥ
Duly honored there by Bharadvaja, Raghava, that foremost of the Raghus, went to the very spacious hermitage of Atri.

समागतं रघुवरं दृष्ट्वा मुनिवरोत्तमः । भार्यया सह धर्म्मात्मा प्रत्युद्गम्य मुदा युतः ।
samāgataṁ raghuvaraṁ dṛṣṭvā munivarottamaḥ bhāryayā saha dharmmātmā pratyudgamya mudā yutaḥ
Seeing that foremost of the Raghus arrived, that best of sages, righteous, together with his wife, filled with joy, coming forth to meet him,

आसने सुशुभे मुख्ये निवेश्य सह सीतया । अर्घ्यपाद्याचमनीयं च वस्त्राणि विविधानि च ।

seating him, together with Sita, upon a most excellent, auspicious seat, offered water for the hands, feet, and sipping, and various garments,

gave the madhuparka with love, and ornaments and unguents. His wife, Anasuya, gave a most excellent divine garment,

सीतायै प्रददौ प्रीत्या भूषणानि द्युमंति च । दिव्यान्नपानभक्षाद्यैर्भोजयामास राघवम् ।
sītāyai pradadau prītyā bhūṣaṇāni dyumaṁti ca divyānnapānabhakṣādyairbhojayāmāsa rāghavam
and lovingly gave to Sita radiant ornaments too. She fed Raghava with divine food, drink, sweets, and the rest.

तेन संपूजितस्तत्र भक्त्या परमया नृपः । उवास दिवसं तत्र प्रीत्या रामस्सलक्ष्मणः ।
tena saṁpūjitastatra bhaktyā paramayā nṛpaḥ uvāsa divasaṁ tatra prītyā rāmassalakṣmaṇaḥ
Duly honored there by him with the greatest devotion, that king, Rama, together with Lakshmana, dwelt there that day with love.

प्रभाते विमले रामः समुत्थाय महामुनिम्। परिणीय प्रणम्याथ गमनायोपचक्रमे ।
prabhāte vimale rāmaḥ samutthāya mahāmunim pariṇīya praṇamyātha gamanāyopacakrame
At clear dawn, Rama, rising, circling that great sage, and bowing, began to prepare for departure.

अनुज्ञातस्ततस्तेन रामो राजीवलोचनः । प्रययौ दंडकारण्यं महर्षिकुलसंकुलम् ।
anujñātastatastena rāmo rājīvalocanaḥ prayayau daṁḍakāraṇyaṁ maharṣikulasaṁkulam
Permitted then by him, Rama, the lotus-eyed, went to the Dandaka forest, thronged with families of great sages.

तत्रातिभीषणं घोरं विराधं नाम राक्षसम् । हत्वाथ शरभंगस्य प्रविवेशाश्रमं शुभम् ।
tatrātibhīṣaṇaṁ ghoraṁ virādhaṁ nāma rākṣasam hatvātha śarabhaṁgasya praviveśāśramaṁ śubham
There, having slain the most terrible, dreadful rakshasa named Viradha, he then entered the auspicious hermitage of Sharabhanga.

स तु दृष्ट्वाथ काकुत्स्थं सद्यः संक्षीणकल्मषः । प्रययौ ब्रह्मलोकं तु गंधर्वाप्सरसान्वितम् ।
sa tu dṛṣṭvātha kākutsthaṁ sadyaḥ saṁkṣīṇakalmaṣaḥ prayayau brahmalokaṁ tu gaṁdharvāpsarasānvitam
He, seeing Kakutstha, instantly freed of his impurities, went to Brahmaloka, endowed with Gandharvas and Apsaras.

सुतीक्ष्णस्याप्यगस्त्यस्य ह्यगस्त्यभ्रातुरेव च । क्रमेण प्रययौ रामस्तैश्च संपूजितस्तथा ।
sutīkṣṇasyāpyagastyasya hyagastyabhrātureva ca krameṇa prayayau rāmastaiśca saṁpūjitastathā
Rama then went, in order, to Sutikshna's, and to Agastya's, and to Agastya's brother's hermitages, and was duly honored by them likewise.
Verse 224 (padma.6.242.224)
पंचवट्यां ततो रामो गोदावर्यास्तटे शुभे । उवास सुचिरं कालं सुखेन परमेण च ।
paṁcavaṭyāṁ tato rāmo godāvaryāstaṭe śubhe uvāsa suciraṁ kālaṁ sukhena parameṇa ca
Then Rama dwelt at Panchavati, on the auspicious bank of the Godavari, for a very long time, in the greatest happiness.
Verse 225 (padma.6.242.225)
तत्र गत्वा मुनिश्रेष्ठास्तापसा धर्मचारिणः । पूजयामासुरात्मेशं रामं राजीवलोचनम् ।
tatra gatvā muniśreṣṭhāstāpasā dharmacāriṇaḥ pūjayāmāsurātmeśaṁ rāmaṁ rājīvalocanam
Going there, the foremost sages, ascetics, righteous in conduct, worshipped Rama, Lord of the self, the lotus-eyed.
Verse 226 (padma.6.242.226)
भयं विज्ञापयामासुस्तं च रक्षोगणेरितम् । तानाश्वास्य तु काकुस्थो ददौ चाभयदक्षिणाम् ।
bhayaṁ vijñāpayāmāsustaṁ ca rakṣogaṇeritam tānāśvāsya tu kākustho dadau cābhayadakṣiṇām
They made known to him their fear caused by the hosts of rakshasas. Kakutstha, reassuring them, granted them the gift of fearlessness.

ते तु संपूजितास्तेन स्वाश्रमान्संप्रपेदिरे । तस्मिंस्त्रयोदशाब्दानि रामस्य परिनिर्य्ययुः ।
te tu saṁpūjitāstena svāśramānsaṁprapedire tasmiṁstrayodaśābdāni rāmasya pariniryyayuḥ
Duly honored by him, they returned to their own hermitages. There, thirteen years of Rama's exile passed.

On the delightful bank of the Godavari, at charming Panchavati, after some time, a terrible-formed rakshasi —

रावणस्य स्वसा तत्र प्रविवेश दुरासदा । सा तु दृष्ट्वा रघुवरं कोटिकंदर्प्पसन्निभम् ।
rāvaṇasya svasā tatra praviveśa durāsadā sā tu dṛṣṭvā raghuvaraṁ koṭikaṁdarppasannibham
Ravana's sister, unassailable, came there. Seeing that best of the Raghus, resembling a hundred million Kamadevas,

अब्रवीत्समुपेत्याथ रामं कमललोचनम् । राक्षस्युवाच- कस्त्वं तापसवेषेण वर्त्तसे दंडके वने ।
abravītsamupetyātha rāmaṁ kamalalocanam rākṣasyuvāca kastvaṁ tāpasaveṣeṇa varttase daṁḍake vane
approaching, spoke to Rama, the lotus-eyed. The rakshasi said: "Who are you, dwelling in the Dandaka forest in the guise of an ascetic?

आगतोऽसि किमर्थं च राक्षसानां दुरासदे । शीघ्रमाचक्ष्व तत्त्वेन नानृतं वक्तुमर्हसि ।
āgato'si kimarthaṁ ca rākṣasānāṁ durāsade śīghramācakṣva tattvena nānṛtaṁ vaktumarhasi
And for what purpose have you come to this land unassailable even by the rakshasas? Tell me quickly, truthfully; you ought not to speak falsely.

महेश्वर उवाच- इत्युक्तः स तदा रामः संप्रहस्याब्रवीद्वचः । राम उवाच-। राज्ञो दशरथस्याहं पुत्रो राम इतीरितः । असौ ममानुजो धन्वी लक्ष्मणो नाम चानघः ।
maheśvara uvāca ityuktaḥ sa tadā rāmaḥ saṁprahasyābravīdvacaḥ rāma uvāca rājño daśarathasyāhaṁ putro rāma itīritaḥ asau mamānujo dhanvī lakṣmaṇo nāma cānaghaḥ
Maheshvara said: Thus addressed, Rama then, smiling, spoke this word. Rama said: "I am the son of King Dasharatha, called Rama. This is my younger brother, the bowman named Lakshmana, sinless.
Verse 238 (padma.6.242.238)
पत्नी चेयं च मे सीता जनकस्यात्मजा प्रिया । पितुर्वचननिर्देशादहं वनमिहागतः ।
patnī ceyaṁ ca me sītā janakasyātmajā priyā piturvacananirdeśādahaṁ vanamihāgataḥ
And this is my wife, Sita, the beloved daughter of Janaka. By the command of my father's word, I have come here to the forest.
Verse 239 (padma.6.242.239)
विचरामो महारण्यमृषीणां हितकाम्यया । आगतासि किमर्थं त्वमाश्रमं मम सुंदरि ।
vicarāmo mahāraṇyamṛṣīṇāṁ hitakāmyayā āgatāsi kimarthaṁ tvamāśramaṁ mama suṁdari
We wander in this great forest for the welfare of the sages. For what reason have you come to my hermitage, O beautiful one?
Verse 240 (padma.6.242.240)
का त्वं कस्य कुले जाता सर्वं सत्यं वदस्व मे । महेश्वर उवाच- इत्युक्ता सा तु रामेण प्राह वाक्यमशंकिता ।
kā tvaṁ kasya kule jātā sarvaṁ satyaṁ vadasva me maheśvara uvāca ityuktā sā tu rāmeṇa prāha vākyamaśaṁkitā
Who are you? In whose family were you born? Tell me all this truthfully." Maheshvara said: Thus addressed by Rama, she, unabashed, spoke.
Verse 241 (padma.6.242.241)
राक्षस्युवाच- अहं विश्रवसः पुत्री रावणस्य स्वसा नृप । नाम्ना शूर्पणखा नाम त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुता ।
rākṣasyuvāca ahaṁ viśravasaḥ putrī rāvaṇasya svasā nṛpa nāmnā śūrpaṇakhā nāma triṣu lokeṣu viśrutā
The rakshasi said: "O king, I am the daughter of Vishrava, the sister of Ravana, named Shurpanakha, renowned in all three worlds.
Verse 242 (padma.6.242.242)
इदं च दंडकारण्यं भ्रात्रा दत्तं मम प्रभो । भक्षयन्नृषिसंघान्वै विचरामि महावने ।
idaṁ ca daṁḍakāraṇyaṁ bhrātrā dattaṁ mama prabho bhakṣayannṛṣisaṁghānvai vicarāmi mahāvane
And this Dandaka forest was given to me by my brother, O Lord. I wander in this great forest, devouring the hosts of sages.
Verse 243 (padma.6.242.243)
त्वां तु दृष्ट्वा मुनिवरं कंदर्पशरपीडिता । रंतुकामा त्वया सार्द्धमागतास्मि सुनिर्भया ।
tvāṁ tu dṛṣṭvā munivaraṁ kaṁdarpaśarapīḍitā raṁtukāmā tvayā sārddhamāgatāsmi sunirbhayā
But seeing you, best of sages, tormented by the arrows of Kama, desiring to sport with you, I have come, quite fearlessly.
Verse 244 (padma.6.242.244)
मम त्वं नृपशार्दूल भर्ता भवितुमर्हसि । इमां तव सतीं सीतां ग्रसितुं भूप कामये ।
mama tvaṁ nṛpaśārdūla bhartā bhavitumarhasi imāṁ tava satīṁ sītāṁ grasituṁ bhūpa kāmaye
O tiger among kings, you ought to become my husband. I desire, O king, to devour this chaste wife of yours, Sita —

वनेषु गिरिमुख्येषु रमयामि त्वया सह । महेश्वर उवाच-। इत्युक्त्वा राक्षसी सीतां ग्रसितुं वीक्ष्य चोद्यताम् ।
vaneṣu girimukhyeṣu ramayāmi tvayā saha maheśvara uvāca ityuktvā rākṣasī sītāṁ grasituṁ vīkṣya codyatām
and delight with you in the forests, on the great mountains." Maheshvara said: Having said this, that rakshasi, seen preparing to devour Sita,

श्रीरामः खड्गमुद्यम्य नासाकर्णौ प्रचिच्छिदे ।
śrīrāmaḥ khaḍgamudyamya nāsākarṇau pracicchide
Shri Rama, raising his sword, cut off her nose and ears.

रुदंती सभयं शीघ्रं राक्षसी विकृतानना । खरालयं प्रविश्याह तस्य रामस्य चेष्टितम् ।
rudaṁtī sabhayaṁ śīghraṁ rākṣasī vikṛtānanā kharālayaṁ praviśyāha tasya rāmasya ceṣṭitam
Weeping, fearful, swiftly, that rakshasi of disfigured face, entering Khara's abode, told him of Rama's deed.
Verse 248 (padma.6.242.248)
स तु राक्षससाहस्रैर्दूषणत्रिशिरो वृतः । आजगाम भृशं योद्धुं राघवं शत्रुसूदनः ।
sa tu rākṣasasāhasrairdūṣaṇatriśiro vṛtaḥ ājagāma bhṛśaṁ yoddhuṁ rāghavaṁ śatrusūdanaḥ
He, that slayer of enemies, surrounded by thousands of rakshasas, together with Dushana and Trishira, came fiercely to fight Raghava.
Verse 249 (padma.6.242.249)
तान्रामः कानने घोरे बाणः कालांतकोपमैः । निजघान महाकायान्राक्षसांस्तत्र लीलया ।
tānrāmaḥ kānane ghore bāṇaḥ kālāṁtakopamaiḥ nijaghāna mahākāyānrākṣasāṁstatra līlayā
Rama, in that terrible forest, with arrows resembling Death itself, slew, with ease, those huge-bodied rakshasas there.

खरं त्रिशिरसं चैव दूषणं तु महाबलम् । रणे निपातयामास बाणैराशीविषोपमैः ।
kharaṁ triśirasaṁ caiva dūṣaṇaṁ tu mahābalam raṇe nipātayāmāsa bāṇairāśīviṣopamaiḥ
Khara, and Trishira, and the mighty Dushana, he felled in battle with arrows like venomous serpents.

निहत्य राक्षसान्सर्वान्दंडकारण्यवासिनः । पूजितः सुरसंघैश्च स्तूयमानो महर्षिभिः ।
nihatya rākṣasānsarvāndaṁḍakāraṇyavāsinaḥ pūjitaḥ surasaṁghaiśca stūyamāno maharṣibhiḥ
Having slain all the rakshasas dwelling in the Dandaka forest, honored by the hosts of gods, praised by the great sages,

उवास दंडकारण्ये सीतया लक्ष्मणेन च । राक्षसानां वधं श्रुत्वा रावणः क्रोधमूर्च्छितः ।

māyāvinā marīcena mṛgarūpeṇa rakṣasaḥ apahṛtyāśramāddūre tau tu daśarathātmajau

विच्छिन्नपादपक्षं च पतितं धरणीतले । रुधिरापूर्णसर्वांगं दृष्ट्वा विस्मयमागतः ।
vicchinnapādapakṣaṁ ca patitaṁ dharaṇītale rudhirāpūrṇasarvāṁgaṁ dṛṣṭvā vismayamāgataḥ
his feet and wings severed, fallen upon the ground, his whole body covered in blood — seeing him, he was struck with wonder.

पप्रच्छ राघवं श्रीमान्केन किं त्वं जिघांसितः । गृध्रस्तु राघवं दृष्ट्वा मंदमंदमुवाच ह ।
papraccha rāghavaṁ śrīmānkena kiṁ tvaṁ jighāṁsitaḥ gṛdhrastu rāghavaṁ dṛṣṭvā maṁdamaṁdamuvāca ha
The glorious Raghava asked, "By whom, and how, have you been sought to be slain?" That vulture, seeing Raghava, spoke very faintly.

गृध्र उवाच- रावणेन हृता राम तव भार्यां बलीयसा । तेन राक्षसमुख्येन संग्रामे निहतोस्म्यहम् ।
gṛdhra uvāca rāvaṇena hṛtā rāma tava bhāryāṁ balīyasā tena rākṣasamukhyena saṁgrāme nihatosmyaham
The vulture said: "O Rama, your wife was carried off by that mighty Ravana. By that chief of rakshasas I have been struck down in battle."

महेश्वर उवाच- इत्युक्त्वा राघवस्याग्रे सहसा त्यक्तजीवितः । संस्कारमकरोद्रामस्तस्य ब्रह्मविधानतः ।
maheśvara uvāca ityuktvā rāghavasyāgre sahasā tyaktajīvitaḥ saṁskāramakarodrāmastasya brahmavidhānataḥ
Maheshvara said: Having said this, he suddenly gave up his life before Raghava. Rama performed his funeral rites according to Brahmanical rite.

स्वपदं च ददौ तस्मै योगिगम्यं सनातनम् । राघवस्य प्रसादेन स गृध्रः परमं पदम् ।

And he gave him his own eternal abode, attainable by yogis. By Raghava's grace, that vulture —

attained liberation in a form equal to Hari's own, that best of birds. Then, going to Mount Malyavan, at the auspicious hermitage of Matanga,

that one of firm vow then offered to those two Raghavas. Having tasted the fruits, Kakutstha gave her supreme liberation.

ततः पंपासरो गत्वा राघवः शत्रुसूदनः । जघान राक्षसं तत्र कबंधं घोररूपिणम् ।
tataḥ paṁpāsaro gatvā rāghavaḥ śatrusūdanaḥ jaghāna rākṣasaṁ tatra kabaṁdhaṁ ghorarūpiṇam
Then, going to Lake Pampa, Raghava, that slayer of enemies, slew there the terrible-formed rakshasa Kabandha.

तं निहत्य महावीर्यो ददाह स्वर्गतश्च सः । ततो गोदावरीं गत्वा रामो राजीवलोचनः ।
taṁ nihatya mahāvīryo dadāha svargataśca saḥ tato godāvarīṁ gatvā rāmo rājīvalocanaḥ
Having slain him, that one of great valor cremated him, and he went to heaven. Then, going to the Godavari, Rama, the lotus-eyed,

पप्रच्छ सीतां गंगे त्वं किं तां जानासि मे प्रियाम् । न शशंस तदा तस्मै सा गंगा तमसावृता ।
papraccha sītāṁ gaṁge tvaṁ kiṁ tāṁ jānāsi me priyām na śaśaṁsa tadā tasmai sā gaṁgā tamasāvṛtā
asked, "O Ganga, do you know of my beloved Sita?" That Ganga, then, overcome with darkness, did not tell him.

शशाप राघवः क्रोधाद्रक्ततोया भवेति ताम् । ततो भयात्समुद्विग्ना पुरस्कृत्य महामुनीन् ।
śaśāpa rāghavaḥ krodhādraktatoyā bhaveti tām tato bhayātsamudvignā puraskṛtya mahāmunīn
Raghava, in anger, cursed her: "Become blood-watered!" Then, distressed with fear, putting the great sages forward,

कृतांजलिपुटा दीना राघवं शरणं गता । ततो महर्षयस्सर्वे रामं प्राहुस्सनातनम् ।
kṛtāṁjalipuṭā dīnā rāghavaṁ śaraṇaṁ gatā tato maharṣayassarve rāmaṁ prāhussanātanam
with joined palms, humbled, she went for refuge to Raghava. Then all the great sages spoke to Rama, that eternal one.

ऋषय ऊचुः- त्वत्पादकमलोद्भूता गंगा त्रैलोक्यपावनी । त्वमेव हि जगन्नाथ तां शापान्मोक्तुमर्हसि ।
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ tvatpādakamalodbhūtā gaṁgā trailokyapāvanī tvameva hi jagannātha tāṁ śāpānmoktumarhasi
The sages said: "This Ganga, born from your lotus foot, purifier of the three worlds — you alone, O Lord of the world, are able to release her from this curse."

महेश्वर उवाच- ततः प्रोवाच धर्मात्मा रामः शरणवत्सलः । राम उवाच- शबर्याः स्नानमात्रेण संगता शुभवारिणा । मुक्ता भवतु मच्छापाद्गंगेयं पापनाशिनी ।
maheśvara uvāca tataḥ provāca dharmātmā rāmaḥ śaraṇavatsalaḥ rāma uvāca śabaryāḥ snānamātreṇa saṁgatā śubhavāriṇā muktā bhavatu macchāpādgaṁgeyaṁ pāpanāśinī
Maheshvara said: Then that righteous Rama, loving toward those who seek refuge, spoke. Rama said: "By the mere bathing of Shabari, joined with her auspicious waters, let this Ganga, destroyer of sin, be freed from my curse."

एवमुक्त्वा तु काकुत्स्थः शबरीतीर्थमुत्तमम् । गंगा गयासमं चक्रे शार्ङ्गकोट्या महाबलः ।
evamuktvā tu kākutsthaḥ śabarītīrthamuttamam gaṁgā gayāsamaṁ cakre śārṅgakoṭyā mahābalaḥ
Having said this, Kakutstha, that mighty one, with the tip of his Sharnga bow, made the excellent ford of Shabari equal to Gaya.

महाभागवतानां च तीर्थं यस्योदकेऽभवत् । तच्छरीरं जगद्वंद्यं भविष्यति न संशयः ।
mahābhāgavatānāṁ ca tīrthaṁ yasyodake'bhavat taccharīraṁ jagadvaṁdyaṁ bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ
[Rama declared:] "That tirtha whose waters have become associated with great devotees — whoever's body is immersed there shall surely become worthy of the world's veneration."

एवमुक्त्वा तु काकुत्स्थ ऋष्यमूकं गिरिं ययौ । ततः पंपासरस्तीरे वानरेण हनूमता ।

the lord of the monkeys sent the heroic monkeys, headed by Hanuman. Leaping across the ocean, Hanuman, son of the Wind,

प्रविश्य नगरीं लंकां दृष्ट्वा सीतां दृढव्रताम् । उपवासकृशां दीनां भृशं शोकपरायणाम् ।
praviśya nagarīṁ laṁkāṁ dṛṣṭvā sītāṁ dṛḍhavratām upavāsakṛśāṁ dīnāṁ bhṛśaṁ śokaparāyaṇām
entering the city of Lanka, saw Sita, of firm vow, emaciated from fasting, wretched, utterly given over to grief,

सप्तमंत्रिसुतांस्तत्र रावणस्य सुतं तथा । तोरणस्तंभमुत्पाट्य निजघान स्वयं कपिः ।
saptamaṁtrisutāṁstatra rāvaṇasya sutaṁ tathā toraṇastaṁbhamutpāṭya nijaghāna svayaṁ kapiḥ
he, that monkey, uprooting a gateway pillar, himself slew, there, seven sons of ministers, and likewise the son of Ravana.

समाश्वास्य च वैदेहीं बभंजोपवनं तदा । वनपालान्किंकरांश्च पंचसेनाग्रनायकान् ।
samāśvāsya ca vaidehīṁ babhaṁjopavanaṁ tadā vanapālānkiṁkarāṁśca paṁcasenāgranāyakān
Having comforted Vaidehi, he then destroyed the pleasure-garden, and the garden-keepers and servants, and the five leaders of the army.

रावणस्य सुतेनाथ निगृहीतो यदृच्छया । दृष्ट्वा च राक्षसेंद्रं तु संभाषित्वा तथैव च ।
rāvaṇasya sutenātha nigṛhīto yadṛcchayā dṛṣṭvā ca rākṣaseṁdraṁ tu saṁbhāṣitvā tathaiva ca
Then, seized by Ravana's son, of his own accord, and seeing the lord of the rakshasas, and speaking with him likewise,

ददाह नगरीं लंकां स्वलांगूलाग्निना कपिः । तया दत्तमभिज्ञानं गृहीत्वा पुनरागमत् ।
dadāha nagarīṁ laṁkāṁ svalāṁgūlāgninā kapiḥ tayā dattamabhijñānaṁ gṛhītvā punarāgamat
that monkey burned the city of Lanka with the fire of his own tail. Taking the token given by her, he returned again.

सोऽभिगम्य महातेजा रामं कमललोचनम् । न्यवेदयद्वानरेंद्रो दृष्टा सीतेति तत्वतः ।
so'bhigamya mahātejā rāmaṁ kamalalocanam nyavedayadvānareṁdro dṛṣṭā sīteti tatvataḥ
That greatly radiant lord of the monkeys, approaching Rama, the lotus-eyed, reported to him truthfully, "Sita has been found."

सुग्रीवसहितो रामो वानरैर्बहुभिर्वृतः । महोदधेस्तटं गत्वा तत्रानीकं न्यवेशयत् ।
sugrīvasahito rāmo vānarairbahubhirvṛtaḥ mahodadhestaṭaṁ gatvā tatrānīkaṁ nyaveśayat
Rama, together with Sugriva, surrounded by many monkeys, going to the shore of the great ocean, stationed his army there.

रावणस्यानुजो भ्राता विभीषण इतीरितः । धर्मात्मा सत्यसंधश्च महाभागवतोत्तमः ।
rāvaṇasyānujo bhrātā vibhīṣaṇa itīritaḥ dharmātmā satyasaṁdhaśca mahābhāgavatottamaḥ
Ravana's younger brother, named Vibhishana, righteous, true to his word, an excellent great devotee,

ज्ञात्वा समागतं रामं परित्यज्य स्वपूर्वजम् । राज्यं सुतांश्च दारांश्च राघवं शरणं ययौ ।
jñātvā samāgataṁ rāmaṁ parityajya svapūrvajam rājyaṁ sutāṁśca dārāṁśca rāghavaṁ śaraṇaṁ yayau
learning that Rama had arrived, forsaking his own elder brother, his kingdom, sons, and wife, went for refuge to Raghava.

परिगृह्य च तं रामो मारुतेर्वचनात्प्रभुः । तस्मै दत्वाऽभयं सौम्यं रक्षो राज्येऽभ्यषेचयत् ।
parigṛhya ca taṁ rāmo mārutervacanātprabhuḥ tasmai datvā'bhayaṁ saumyaṁ rakṣo rājye'bhyaṣecayat
And accepting him, at the word of Hanuman, that Lord Rama, gentle, granting him fearlessness, anointed that rakshasa to the kingdom.

ततस्समुद्रं काकुत्स्थस्तर्तुकामः प्रपद्य वै । सुप्रसन्नजलं तं तु दृष्ट्वा रामो महाबलः ।
tatassamudraṁ kākutsthastartukāmaḥ prapadya vai suprasannajalaṁ taṁ tu dṛṣṭvā rāmo mahābalaḥ
Then Kakutstha, wishing to cross the ocean, approaching it, and seeing that its waters remained undisturbed, that mighty Rama —

शार्ङ्गमादाय बाणौघैः शोषयामास वारिधिम् । ततस्तु सरितामीशः काकुत्स्थं करुणानिधिम् ।
śārṅgamādāya bāṇaughaiḥ śoṣayāmāsa vāridhim tatastu saritāmīśaḥ kākutsthaṁ karuṇānidhim
taking up the Sharnga bow, with floods of arrows, began to dry up the ocean. Then the lord of rivers, that Ocean, approaching that treasury of compassion, Kakutstha —

प्रपद्य शरणं देवमर्चयामास वारिधिः । पुनरापूर्य जलधिं वरुणास्त्रेण राघवः ।
prapadya śaraṇaṁ devamarcayāmāsa vāridhiḥ punarāpūrya jaladhiṁ varuṇāstreṇa rāghavaḥ
went for refuge and worshipped him, that god. Raghava, filling the ocean again with the Varuna weapon,

उदधेर्वचनात्सेतुं सागरे मकरालये । गिरिभिर्वानरानीतैर्नलः सेतुमकारयत् ।
udadhervacanātsetuṁ sāgare makarālaye giribhirvānarānītairnalaḥ setumakārayat
at the word of the Ocean, in that sea abode of crocodiles, Nala built the bridge with mountains brought by the monkeys.

ततो गत्वा पुरीं लंकां सन्निवेश्य महाबलम् । सम्यगायोधनं चक्रे वानराणां च रक्षसाम् ।
tato gatvā purīṁ laṁkāṁ sanniveśya mahābalam samyagāyodhanaṁ cakre vānarāṇāṁ ca rakṣasām
Then, going to the city of Lanka, stationing that mighty army, a great battle ensued between the monkeys and the rakshasas.

ततो दशास्यतनयः शक्रजिद्राक्षसो बली । बबंध नागपाशैश्च तावुभौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ।
tato daśāsyatanayaḥ śakrajidrākṣaso balī babaṁdha nāgapāśaiśca tāvubhau rāmalakṣmaṇau
Then the son of the ten-faced one, the mighty rakshasa Indrajit, bound both Rama and Lakshmana with serpent-nooses.

वैनतेयः समागत्य तान्यस्त्राणि प्रमोचयत् । राक्षसा निहतास्सर्वे वानरैश्च महाबलैः ।
vainateyaḥ samāgatya tānyastrāṇi pramocayat rākṣasā nihatāssarve vānaraiśca mahābalaiḥ
Garuda, coming there, released them from those weapons. All the rakshasas were slain by the mighty monkeys.

रावणस्यानुजं वीरं कुंभकर्णं महाबलम् । निजघान रणे रामो बाणैरग्निशिखोपमैः ।
rāvaṇasyānujaṁ vīraṁ kuṁbhakarṇaṁ mahābalam nijaghāna raṇe rāmo bāṇairagniśikhopamaiḥ
Rama slew, in battle, Ravana's heroic, mighty younger brother Kumbhakarna, with arrows like flames of fire.

ब्रह्मास्त्रेणेन्द्रजित्क्रुद्धः पातयामास वानरान् । हनूमता समानीतो महौषधि महीधरः ।
brahmāstreṇendrajitkruddhaḥ pātayāmāsa vānarān hanūmatā samānīto mahauṣadhi mahīdharaḥ
Indrajit, enraged, with the Brahma weapon, felled the monkeys. The mountain bearing the great healing herbs was brought by Hanuman —

तस्यानीतस्य च स्पर्शात्सर्व एव समुत्थिताः । ततो रामानुजो वीरः शक्रजेतारमाहवे ।
tasyānītasya ca sparśātsarva eva samutthitāḥ tato rāmānujo vīraḥ śakrajetāramāhave
by the touch of that which he brought, all of them arose. Then Rama's younger brother, that hero, in battle, that conqueror of Indra's conqueror —

निपातयामास शरैर्वृत्रं वज्रधरो यथा । निर्ययावथ पौलस्त्यो योद्धुं रामेण संयुगे ।

Then, enraged, that greatly radiant Raghava, destroyer of rakshasas, slew the heroic rakshasas with arrows resembling Death, the ender of all.

That night-wanderer, his whole body pierced by Raghava's weapons, fled in fear from the battle, toward Lanka.

lasting seven days and nights, most terrible with weapons and missiles. All the gods, stationed in their celestial cars, watched that battle there.

For the slaying of that evil-souled one, Raghava swiftly released the Brahma weapon, most terrible, resembling the fire of dissolution in splendor.

and, honored by the serpents there, returned to Raghava's hand. That great demon, his life gone, fell, and died.

ततो देवगणास्सर्वे हर्षनिर्भरमानसाः । ववृषुः पुष्पवर्षाणि महात्मनि जगद्गुरौ ।
tato devagaṇāssarve harṣanirbharamānasāḥ vavṛṣuḥ puṣpavarṣāṇi mahātmani jagadgurau
Then all the hosts of gods, hearts overflowing with joy, rained down showers of flowers upon that great soul, the teacher of the world.

जगुर्गंधर्वपतयो ननृतुश्चाप्सरोगणाः । ववुः पुण्यास्तथा वाताः सुप्रभोऽभूद्दिवाकरः ।
jagurgaṁdharvapatayo nanṛtuścāpsarogaṇāḥ vavuḥ puṇyāstathā vātāḥ suprabho'bhūddivākaraḥ
The lords of the Gandharvas sang, and the hosts of Apsaras danced; auspicious winds blew, the sun shone with excellent brightness.

तुष्टुवुर्मुनयः सिद्धा देवगंधर्वकिन्नराः । लंकायां राक्षसश्रेष्ठमभिषिच्य विभीषणम् ।
tuṣṭuvurmunayaḥ siddhā devagaṁdharvakinnarāḥ laṁkāyāṁ rākṣasaśreṣṭhamabhiṣicya vibhīṣaṇam

that best of the Raghu line regarded himself as, as it were, fulfilled. Rama, having anointed Vibhishana, spoke this word there.

Rama said: "As long as the sun and moon endure, as long as the earth stands, as long as my story remains in the world — so long shall this kingdom remain with Vibhishana.

गत्वा मम पदं दिव्यं योगिगम्यं सनातनम् । सपुत्रपौत्रः सगणः संप्राप्नुहि महाबलः ।

"And afterward, having gone to my divine, eternal abode, attainable by yogis, may you, O mighty one, together with your sons, grandsons, and hosts, attain it too."

उवाच राघवः सीतां गर्हितं वचनं बहु । सा तेन गर्हिता साध्वी विवेश चानलं महत् ।
uvāca rāghavaḥ sītāṁ garhitaṁ vacanaṁ bahu sā tena garhitā sādhvī viveśa cānalaṁ mahat
Raghava spoke to Sita many reproachful words. She, thus reproached, that virtuous woman, entered a great fire.

ततो देवगणास्सर्वे शिवब्रह्मपुरोगमाः । दृष्ट्वा तु मातरं वह्नौ प्रविशंतीं भयातुराः । समागम्य रघुश्रेष्ठं सर्वे प्रांजलयोऽब्रुवन् ।
tato devagaṇāssarve śivabrahmapurogamāḥ dṛṣṭvā tu mātaraṁ vahnau praviśaṁtīṁ bhayāturāḥ samāgamya raghuśreṣṭhaṁ sarve prāṁjalayo'bruvan
Then all the hosts of gods, with Shiva and Brahma at their head, seeing the Mother entering the fire, stricken with fear, coming together, all spoke to that best of the Raghus with joined palms.

देवा ऊचुः- रामराम महाबाहो शृणु त्वं चातिविक्रम । सीतातिविमला साध्वी तव नीत्यानपायिनी ।

The gods said: "Rama, Rama, mighty-armed, most valorous one, listen. Sita is utterly stainless, virtuous, unwavering in her devotion to you.

शापात्तौ सनकादीनां समुत्पन्नौ महीतले । तयोर्विमुक्त्यै वैदेही गृहीता दण्डके वने ।
śāpāttau sanakādīnāṁ samutpannau mahītale tayorvimuktyai vaidehī gṛhītā daṇḍake vane
by the curse of Sanaka and the others, they were born upon the earth. For their liberation, Vaidehi was seized in the Dandaka forest.

तावुभौ वै वधं प्राप्तौ त्वया राक्षसपुंगवौ । तौ विमुक्तौ दिवं यातौ पुत्रपौत्रसहानुगौ ।
tāvubhau vai vadhaṁ prāptau tvayā rākṣasapuṁgavau tau vimuktau divaṁ yātau putrapautrasahānugau
Both of them, those foremost of rakshasas, attained death by you; freed, they went to heaven, together with their sons, grandsons, and followers.

त्वं विष्णुस्त्वं परं ब्रह्म योगिध्येयः सनातनः । त्वमेव सर्वदेवानामनादिनिधनोऽव्ययः ।
tvaṁ viṣṇustvaṁ paraṁ brahma yogidhyeyaḥ sanātanaḥ tvameva sarvadevānāmanādinidhano'vyayaḥ
You are Vishnu, you are the Supreme Brahman, the eternal object of yogis' meditation. You alone, of all the gods, are without beginning or end, imperishable.

त्वं हि नारायणः श्रीमान्सीता लक्ष्मीः सनातनी । माता सा सर्वलोकानां पिता त्वं परमेश्वर ।

You are indeed the glorious Narayana; Sita is the eternal Lakshmi. She is the mother of all the worlds; you, O Supreme Lord, are their father.

This mother of the world is ever, eternally, inseparable from you. As you are all-pervading, so too is she, O foremost of the Raghus.

Therefore, O gentle Kakutstha, accept Sita, of pure conduct, virtuous, of firm vow, without delay, as Vishnu received Lakshmi from the Ocean of Milk."

Ishvara said: Meanwhile, there, that witness of all the world, Fire, taking Sita, gave her to Rama, in the presence of the gods. Agni, present in every body, said this to Kakutstha there.

वह्निरुवाच- इयं शुद्धसमाचारा सीता निष्कल्मषा विभो । गृहाण मा चिरं राम सत्यं सत्यं तवाब्रुवन् ।
vahniruvāca iyaṁ śuddhasamācārā sītā niṣkalmaṣā vibho gṛhāṇa mā ciraṁ rāma satyaṁ satyaṁ tavābruvan
Fire said: "This Sita is of pure conduct, spotless, O all-pervading one. Accept her without delay, O Rama; I speak the truth, the truth, to you."

Ishvara said: Then, at Agni's word, accepting Sita, that foremost of the Raghus, Rama, became greatly joyful, honored by the best of gods.

राक्षसैर्निहता ये तु संग्रामे वानरोत्तमाः । पितामहवरात्तूर्णं जीवमानाः समुत्थिताः ।

permitted, mounting the Pushpaka together with his followers, then Rama went to Nandigrama, surrounded by friends, upon the Pushpaka.

मंत्रिभिः पौरमुख्यैश्च सानुजः केकयीसुतः । प्रत्युद्ययौ नृपवरैः सबलैः पूर्वजं मुदा ।
maṁtribhiḥ pauramukhyaiśca sānujaḥ kekayīsutaḥ pratyudyayau nṛpavaraiḥ sabalaiḥ pūrvajaṁ mudā
Together with the ministers and the foremost citizens, that son of Kaikeyi, together with his younger brother, and with the best of kings and their forces, went forth joyfully to meet his elder brother.

together with bears, monkeys, and rakshasas, and the finest Nishada soldiers, that greatly radiant one entered the imperishable city of Saketa.

आलोक्य राजनगरीं पथि राजपुत्रो राजानमेव पितरं परिचिंतयानः । सुग्रीवमारुतिविभीषणपुण्यपादसंचारपूतभवनं प्रविवेश रामः ।
ālokya rājanagarīṁ pathi rājaputro rājānameva pitaraṁ pariciṁtayānaḥ sugrīvamārutivibhīṣaṇapuṇyapādasaṁcārapūtabhavanaṁ praviveśa rāmaḥ
Beholding the royal city on his path, that prince, thinking of his father, the king, himself — Rama entered that palace, purified by the sacred footsteps of Sugriva, Hanuman, and Vibhishana.
