The Destruction of Vidarbhasena
Verse 1 (padma.6.247.1)
रुद्र उवाच- हत्वाथ यवनं तत्र मुचुकुंदेन धीमता । दत्त्वा तस्मै वरं मुक्तिं निष्क्रांतो यदुनंदनः ।
rudra uvāca hatvātha yavanaṁ tatra mucukuṁdena dhīmatā dattvā tasmai varaṁ muktiṁ niṣkrāṁto yadunaṁdanaḥ
Rudra said: Having thus slain the Yavana there through the wise Muchukunda, and having given him the boon of liberation, that delight of the Yadus came forth.
Verse 2 (padma.6.247.2)
हतं च यवनं श्रुत्वा जरासंधः सुदुर्मतिः । ययुधे रामकृष्णाभ्यां स्वबलेन समावृतः ।
hataṁ ca yavanaṁ śrutvā jarāsaṁdhaḥ sudurmatiḥ yayudhe rāmakṛṣṇābhyāṁ svabalena samāvṛtaḥ
Hearing that the Yavana had been slain, that most ill-minded Jarasandha, surrounded by his own troops, fought again with Rama and Krishna.
Verse 3 (padma.6.247.3)
कृष्णेन निहतं सैन्यं सर्वं तस्य दुरात्मनः । स पपात महीपृष्ठे मूर्च्छितो मगधाधिपः ।
kṛṣṇena nihataṁ sainyaṁ sarvaṁ tasya durātmanaḥ sa papāta mahīpṛṣṭhe mūrcchito magadhādhipaḥ
The entire army of that evil-souled one was slain by Krishna. That lord of Magadha fell to the ground, unconscious.
Verse 4 (padma.6.247.4)
चिरेण लब्ध्वा संज्ञां तु विह्वलांगो भयातुरः । न शशाक रणे योद्धुं रामेण मगधेश्वरः ।
cireṇa labdhvā saṁjñāṁ tu vihvalāṁgo bhayāturaḥ na śaśāka raṇe yoddhuṁ rāmeṇa magadheśvaraḥ
After a long while regaining consciousness, his limbs trembling, stricken with fear, that lord of Magadha was unable to fight against Rama.
Verse 5 (padma.6.247.5)
विमुखः प्राद्रवत्तूर्णं हतशेषबलानुगः । अजेयाविति तौ मत्वा रामकृष्णौ महाबलौ ।
vimukhaḥ prādravattūrṇaṁ hataśeṣabalānugaḥ ajeyāviti tau matvā rāmakṛṣṇau mahābalau
Turning away, he fled swiftly, followed by the remnant of his slain army, deeming those two mighty ones, Rama and Krishna, unconquerable.
Verse 6 (padma.6.247.6)
तयोर्विरोधं त्यक्त्वाथ नगरीं स्वां विवेश ह । अथ तौ वसुदेवस्य तनयौ सह सेनया ।
tayorvirodhaṁ tyaktvātha nagarīṁ svāṁ viveśa ha atha tau vasudevasya tanayau saha senayā
Abandoning his enmity with them, he entered his own city. Then those two sons of Vasudeva, together with their army,
Verse 7 (padma.6.247.7)
मथुरां त्यज्य नगरीं प्रविष्टौ द्वारिकां पुरीम् । इंद्रेण प्रेषितो वायुः सभां तत्र दिवौकसाम् ।
mathurāṁ tyajya nagarīṁ praviṣṭau dvārikāṁ purīm iṁdreṇa preṣito vāyuḥ sabhāṁ tatra divaukasām
leaving the city of Mathura, entered the city of Dvaraka. Vayu, sent by Indra, brought there an assembly hall of the celestials —
Verse 8 (padma.6.247.8)
कृष्णाय प्रददौ प्रीत्या निर्मितां विश्वकर्मणा । वज्रवैडूर्यरचितां बह्वासनविचित्रिताम् ।
kṛṣṇāya pradadau prītyā nirmitāṁ viśvakarmaṇā vajravaiḍūryaracitāṁ bahvāsanavicitritām
he lovingly gave it to Krishna, that hall built by Vishvakarma, fashioned of diamond and cat's-eye gems, adorned with many seats,
Verse 9 (padma.6.247.9)
नानारत्नमयैर्दिव्यैः स्वर्णच्छत्रैर्विराजिताम् । तां प्राप्य रम्यां तु सभामुग्रसेनादयो नृपाः ।
nānāratnamayairdivyaiḥ svarṇacchatrairvirājitām tāṁ prāpya ramyāṁ tu sabhāmugrasenādayo nṛpāḥ
resplendent with divine golden canopies set with various jewels. Having obtained that delightful hall, the kings headed by Ugrasena —
Verse 10 (padma.6.247.10)
मोदंते नैगमैः सार्द्धं दिवि देवगणा इव । इक्ष्वाकुवंशसंभूतो रैवतो नाम पार्थिवः ।
modaṁte naigamaiḥ sārddhaṁ divi devagaṇā iva ikṣvākuvaṁśasaṁbhūto raivato nāma pārthivaḥ
rejoiced there together with the citizens, like the hosts of gods in heaven. A king born of the Ikshvaku line, named Raivata —
Verse 11 (padma.6.247.11)
कन्यां दुहितरं स्वस्य सर्वलक्षणसंयुताम् । रामाय प्रददौ प्रीत्या रेवती नाम नामतः ।
kanyāṁ duhitaraṁ svasya sarvalakṣaṇasaṁyutām rāmāya pradadau prītyā revatī nāma nāmataḥ
gave his own daughter, endowed with every auspicious mark, lovingly to Rama — she who bore the name Revati.
Verse 12 (padma.6.247.12)
उपयेमे विधानेन स रामस्तां च रेवतीम् । रमयामास च तया शच्या इव सुरेश्वरः ।
upayeme vidhānena sa rāmastāṁ ca revatīm ramayāmāsa ca tayā śacyā iva sureśvaraḥ
Rama duly married that Revati, and delighted with her, as the lord of the gods delights with Shachi.
Verse 13 (padma.6.247.13)
विदर्भराजो धर्मात्मा भीष्मको नाम धार्मिकः । बभूवुस्तस्य पुत्रास्तु रुक्मप्रभृतयः शुभाः ।
vidarbharājo dharmātmā bhīṣmako nāma dhārmikaḥ babhūvustasya putrāstu rukmaprabhṛtayaḥ śubhāḥ
There was a righteous king of Vidarbha named Bhishmaka, a keeper of dharma. His sons were Rukma and the other auspicious ones.
Verse 14 (padma.6.247.14)
तेषामवरजा कन्या रुक्मिणी वरवर्णिनी । कमलांशेन संभूता सर्वलक्षणसंयुता ।
teṣāmavarajā kanyā rukmiṇī varavarṇinī kamalāṁśena saṁbhūtā sarvalakṣaṇasaṁyutā
Younger than them was a daughter, the fair Rukmini, born of a portion of Lakshmi, endowed with every auspicious mark.
Verse 15 (padma.6.247.15)
राघवत्वेभवत्सीता रुक्मिणी कृष्णजन्मनि । अन्येष्वेवावतारेषु विष्णोरेषा सहायिनी ।
rāghavatvebhavatsītā rukmiṇī kṛṣṇajanmani anyeṣvevāvatāreṣu viṣṇoreṣā sahāyinī
As Sita in the incarnation as Raghava, so as Rukmini in the birth as Krishna — in every other incarnation of Vishnu, she is likewise his companion.
Verse 16 (padma.6.247.16)
हिरण्यक हिरण्याक्षौ संभूतौ द्वापरे पुनः । शिशुपालो दंतवक्त्र इति नाम समन्वितौ ।
hiraṇyaka hiraṇyākṣau saṁbhūtau dvāpare punaḥ śiśupālo daṁtavaktra iti nāma samanvitau
Hiranyakashipu and Hiranyaksha, born again in the Dvapara age, bore the names Shishupala and Dantavaktra —
Verse 17 (padma.6.247.17)
चैद्यान्वये समुद्भूतौ महाबलपराक्रमौ । रुक्मिणी शिशुपालाय दातुमैच्छत्तदात्मजः ।
caidyānvaye samudbhūtau mahābalaparākramau rukmiṇī śiśupālāya dātumaicchattadātmajaḥ
born in the lineage of Chedi, of great strength and valor. Her own brother wished to give Rukmini to Shishupala.
Verse 18 (padma.6.247.18)
तं नेच्छती पतिं सा तु शिशुपालं शुभानना । बाल्यात्प्रभृति वै विष्णुमनुरक्ता दृढव्रता ।
taṁ necchatī patiṁ sā tu śiśupālaṁ śubhānanā bālyātprabhṛti vai viṣṇumanuraktā dṛḍhavratā
That beautiful-faced one, not desiring Shishupala as husband, devoted to Vishnu from childhood, of firm vow —
Verse 19 (padma.6.247.19)
उद्दिश्य कृष्णं भर्त्तारं सुराणामर्चनं सदा । चकार रुक्मिणी कन्या दानानि विविधानि च ।
uddiśya kṛṣṇaṁ bharttāraṁ surāṇāmarcanaṁ sadā cakāra rukmiṇī kanyā dānāni vividhāni ca
with Krishna as her intended husband, ever worshipped the gods, and the maiden Rukmini performed various acts of charity.
Verse 20 (padma.6.247.20)
व्रतचर्यापराभूत्वा ध्यायंती पुरुषोत्तमम् । आत्मेशं स्वस्य भर्तारमुवास पितृमंदिरे ।
vratacaryāparābhūtvā dhyāyaṁtī puruṣottamam ātmeśaṁ svasya bhartāramuvāsa pitṛmaṁdire
Devoted to the observance of vows, meditating on Purushottama as her own Lord and husband, she dwelt in her father's house.
Verse 21 (padma.6.247.21)
कर्त्तुं तां शिशुपालाय विवाहं पार्थिवोत्तमः । चकार यत्नं पुत्रेण रुक्मिणा सविधीमता ।
karttuṁ tāṁ śiśupālāya vivāhaṁ pārthivottamaḥ cakāra yatnaṁ putreṇa rukmiṇā savidhīmatā
To give her in marriage to Shishupala, that best of kings, together with his methodical son Rukma, made every effort.
Verse 22 (padma.6.247.22)
पुरोहितसुतं विप्रं प्रेषयामास रुक्मिणी । उद्दिश्य कृष्णं भर्त्तारं स तूर्णं द्वारकां ययौ ।
purohitasutaṁ vipraṁ preṣayāmāsa rukmiṇī uddiśya kṛṣṇaṁ bharttāraṁ sa tūrṇaṁ dvārakāṁ yayau
Rukmini sent a Brahmin, the son of her family priest, to Krishna, her intended husband; he swiftly went to Dvaraka.
Verse 23 (padma.6.247.23)
समेत्य कृष्णं रामं च ताभ्यां विधिवदर्चितः । एकांते सर्वमाचष्ट रुक्मिणीभाषितं तयोः ।
sametya kṛṣṇaṁ rāmaṁ ca tābhyāṁ vidhivadarcitaḥ ekāṁte sarvamācaṣṭa rukmiṇībhāṣitaṁ tayoḥ
Meeting Krishna and Rama, duly honored by them, in private he told them all — Rukmini's message — to those two.
Verse 24 (padma.6.247.24)
तच्छ्रुत्वा रामकृष्णौ तु तेन विप्रेण धीमता । सर्वशस्त्रास्त्रसंपूर्णं रथमाकाशगं प्रभुः ।
tacchrutvā rāmakṛṣṇau tu tena vipreṇa dhīmatā sarvaśastrāstrasaṁpūrṇaṁ rathamākāśagaṁ prabhuḥ
Hearing this from that wise Brahmin, Rama and Krishna prepared; and the Lord, mounting a sky-going chariot, complete with every weapon,
Verse 25 (padma.6.247.25)
आरुह्य सूतमुख्येन दारुकेण महात्मना । विदर्भनगरीं तूर्णं जग्मतुः पुरुषोत्तमौ ।
āruhya sūtamukhyena dārukeṇa mahātmanā vidarbhanagarīṁ tūrṇaṁ jagmatuḥ puruṣottamau
driven by that foremost of charioteers, the great-souled Daruka, those two forms of Purushottama swiftly went to the city of Vidarbha.
Verse 26 (padma.6.247.26)
राजानः सर्वराष्ट्रेभ्यो विवाहं द्रष्टुमागताः । जरासंधमुखाः सर्वे शिशुपालस्य धीमतः ।
rājānaḥ sarvarāṣṭrebhyo vivāhaṁ draṣṭumāgatāḥ jarāsaṁdhamukhāḥ sarve śiśupālasya dhīmataḥ
Kings from every land had come to witness the marriage — all headed by Jarasandha — for the wise Shishupala's wedding.
Verse 27 (padma.6.247.27)
तस्मिन्नुद्वाहसमये रुक्मिणी रुक्मभूषणा । दुर्गां निःसृतार्चयितुं सखीभिर्नगराद्बहिः ।
tasminnudvāhasamaye rukmiṇī rukmabhūṣaṇā durgāṁ niḥsṛtārcayituṁ sakhībhirnagarādbahiḥ
At that wedding hour, Rukmini, adorned with golden ornaments, went out of the city with her companions to worship the goddess Durga.
Verse 28 (padma.6.247.28)
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु संप्राप्तो देवकीसुतः । रथस्थां तां च जग्राह बलवान्मधुसूदनः ।
etasminneva kāle tu saṁprāpto devakīsutaḥ rathasthāṁ tāṁ ca jagrāha balavānmadhusūdanaḥ
At that very moment, the son of Devaki arrived, and that mighty Madhusudana seized her, mounted upon his chariot.
Verse 29 (padma.6.247.29)
सहसा रथमारोप्य ययौ तूर्णं स्वमालयम् । ततः क्रोधसमाविष्टा जरासंधमुखा नृपाः ।
sahasā rathamāropya yayau tūrṇaṁ svamālayam tataḥ krodhasamāviṣṭā jarāsaṁdhamukhā nṛpāḥ
Suddenly setting her upon the chariot, he swiftly went to his own city. Then the kings, headed by Jarasandha, overcome with anger,

रुक्मिणा राजपुत्रेण युद्धाय समुपस्थिताः । अनुयाता हरिं क्रुद्धाश्चतुरंगबलान्विताः ।
rukmiṇā rājaputreṇa yuddhāya samupasthitāḥ anuyātā hariṁ kruddhāścaturaṁgabalānvitāḥ
together with the prince Rukma, prepared themselves for battle; enraged, they pursued Hari, equipped with the fourfold army.
Verse 31 (padma.6.247.31)
बलभद्रो महाबाहुरवरुह्य रथोत्तमात् । लांगलं मुशलं गृह्य निजघान क्षणादरीन् ।
balabhadro mahābāhuravaruhya rathottamāt lāṁgalaṁ muśalaṁ gṛhya nijaghāna kṣaṇādarīn
Balabhadra, the mighty-armed one, descending from his excellent chariot, taking up plough and club, slew the enemies in an instant.
Verse 32 (padma.6.247.32)
रथानश्वान्महानागांस्तथा पादचरानपि । लांगलमुशलाम्यां वै निजघान बलाद्रणे ।
rathānaśvānmahānāgāṁstathā pādacarānapi lāṁgalamuśalāmyāṁ vai nijaghāna balādraṇe
He slew, by force, in that battle, the chariots, horses, great elephants, and the foot-soldiers too, with his plough and club.
Verse 33 (padma.6.247.33)
तस्य लांगलपातेन चूर्णिता रथपंक्तयः । नागाश्च पतिता भूमौ वज्रेणेव महीधराः ।
tasya lāṁgalapātena cūrṇitā rathapaṁktayaḥ nāgāśca patitā bhūmau vajreṇeva mahīdharāḥ
By the stroke of his plough, rows of chariots were crushed, and the elephants fell to the ground, like mountains struck by the thunderbolt.
Verse 34 (padma.6.247.34)
निर्भिन्नमस्तकाः सर्वे वमंतो रुधिरं बहु । क्षणेनैव हतं सैन्यं बलरामेण वै तदा ।
nirbhinnamastakāḥ sarve vamaṁto rudhiraṁ bahu kṣaṇenaiva hataṁ sainyaṁ balarāmeṇa vai tadā
All with their heads split open, vomiting much blood — in an instant that army was slain by Balarama.
Verse 35 (padma.6.247.35)
साश्वं सनागं सरथं सपदातिं महारणे । समंतात्समरे तत्र सुस्रुवुः शोणितापगाः ।
sāśvaṁ sanāgaṁ sarathaṁ sapadātiṁ mahāraṇe samaṁtātsamare tatra susruvuḥ śoṇitāpagāḥ
With its horses, elephants, chariots, and foot-soldiers, in that great battle, rivers of blood flowed on every side.
Verse 36 (padma.6.247.36)
प्रभग्नाः पार्थिवाः सर्वे दुद्रुवुर्भयपीडिताः । कृष्णेन कदनं चक्रे रुक्मी क्रोधवशाद्बली ।
prabhagnāḥ pārthivāḥ sarve dudruvurbhayapīḍitāḥ kṛṣṇena kadanaṁ cakre rukmī krodhavaśādbalī
All the kings, routed, fled in terror. Rukma, that mighty one, overcome with rage, gave battle to Krishna.
Verse 37 (padma.6.247.37)
धनुरुद्यम्य बाणौघैस्ताडयामास शार्ङ्गिणम् । ततः प्रहस्य गोविंदः शार्ङ्गमादाय लीलया ।
dhanurudyamya bāṇaughaistāḍayāmāsa śārṅgiṇam tataḥ prahasya goviṁdaḥ śārṅgamādāya līlayā
Raising his bow, he struck the wielder of the Sharnga with a flood of arrows. Then, laughing, Govinda, taking up the Sharnga bow with ease,
Verse 38 (padma.6.247.38)
जघानैकेनबाणेन रथाश्वांस्तस्य सारथिम् । रथंध्वजं पताकां च चिच्छेद धरणीधरः ।
jaghānaikenabāṇena rathāśvāṁstasya sārathim rathaṁdhvajaṁ patākāṁ ca ciccheda dharaṇīdharaḥ
slew, with a single arrow, his chariot-horses and his charioteer. That sustainer of the earth then cut down his chariot, banner, and flag.
Verse 39 (padma.6.247.39)
विरथः खङ्गमादाय धरण्यां स उपस्थितः । कृष्णस्तु खङ्गं चिच्छेद बाणेनैकेन वीर्यवान् ।
virathaḥ khaṅgamādāya dharaṇyāṁ sa upasthitaḥ kṛṣṇastu khaṅgaṁ ciccheda bāṇenaikena vīryavān
Bereft of his chariot, taking up his sword, he stood upon the ground; and Krishna, that valorous one, severed his sword with a single arrow.
Verse 40 (padma.6.247.40)
ततः स मुष्टिमुद्यम्य कृष्णं वक्षस्यताडयत् । तं जग्राह रणे वीरं निबध्य निबिडं हरिः ।
tataḥ sa muṣṭimudyamya kṛṣṇaṁ vakṣasyatāḍayat taṁ jagrāha raṇe vīraṁ nibadhya nibiḍaṁ hariḥ
Then, raising his fist, he struck Krishna upon the chest. Hari seized that hero in battle, binding him tightly,
Verse 41 (padma.6.247.41)
तीक्ष्णं क्षुरप्रमादाय प्रहसन्मधुसूदनः । शिरसो मुंडनं कृत्वा मुमोच च जनार्दनः ।
tīkṣṇaṁ kṣurapramādāya prahasanmadhusūdanaḥ śiraso muṁḍanaṁ kṛtvā mumoca ca janārdanaḥ
and, laughing, Madhusudana, with a sharp razor-arrow, shaved his head, and then Janardana released him.
Verse 42 (padma.6.247.42)
स तु शोकसमाविष्टो निःश्वसन्नुरगो यथा । आविवेश पुरं स्वीयं स तु तत्रैव चावसत् ।
sa tu śokasamāviṣṭo niḥśvasannurago yathā āviveśa puraṁ svīyaṁ sa tu tatraiva cāvasat
Overcome with grief, sighing like a serpent, he entered his own city, and dwelt there.
