The Telling of Rukmini's Marriage

Verse 1 (padma.6.248.1)

रुद्र उवाच- अथ कृष्णस्तु रामेण रुक्मिण्या दारुकेण च । दिव्यं स्यंदनमारुह्य ययौ तूर्णं स्वमालयम् ।

rudra uvāca atha kṛṣṇastu rāmeṇa rukmiṇyā dārukeṇa ca divyaṁ syaṁdanamāruhya yayau tūrṇaṁ svamālayam

Rudra said: Then Krishna, together with Rama, Rukmini, and Daruka, mounting the divine chariot, swiftly went to his own abode.

Verse 2 (padma.6.248.2)

ततः प्रविश्य नगरीं द्वारकां देवकीसुतः । शुभेह्रि शुभलग्ने वै वेदोक्तविधिना हरिः ।

tataḥ praviśya nagarīṁ dvārakāṁ devakīsutaḥ śubhehri śubhalagne vai vedoktavidhinā hariḥ

Then, entering the city of Dvaraka, the son of Devaki, Hari, on an auspicious day, at an auspicious moment, according to the rite declared in the Veda —

Verse 3 (padma.6.248.3)

उपयेमे नृपसुतां रुक्मिणीं रुक्मभूषिताम् । तस्मिन्नुद्वाहसमये देवदुंदुभयो दिवि ।

upayeme nṛpasutāṁ rukmiṇīṁ rukmabhūṣitām tasminnudvāhasamaye devaduṁdubhayo divi

married that king's daughter, Rukmini, adorned with golden ornaments. At that wedding hour, the drums of the gods in heaven —

Verse 4 (padma.6.248.4)

विनेदुः पुष्पवर्षाणि ववृषुः सुरसत्तमाः । वसुदेवोग्रसेनौ च तथाक्रूरो यदूत्तमः ।

vineduḥ puṣpavarṣāṇi vavṛṣuḥ surasattamāḥ vasudevograsenau ca tathākrūro yadūttamaḥ

resounded, and the best of the gods rained down showers of flowers. Vasudeva, Ugrasena, and likewise Akrura, foremost of the Yadus,

Verse 5 (padma.6.248.5)

बलभद्रो महातेजा ये चान्ये यदुपुंगवाः । चक्रुः कृष्णस्य रुक्मिण्या विवाहं सुसुखं यथा ।

balabhadro mahātejā ye cānye yadupuṁgavāḥ cakruḥ kṛṣṇasya rukmiṇyā vivāhaṁ susukhaṁ yathā

Balabhadra of great splendor, and whatever other foremost Yadus there were — they conducted the wedding of Krishna and Rukmini most joyfully.

Verse 6 (padma.6.248.6)

नंदगोपोथ गोपालैर्गोपवृंदैः समागतः । स्वलंकृताभिर्योषाभिर्यशोदा च समागता ।

naṁdagopotha gopālairgopavṛṁdaiḥ samāgataḥ svalaṁkṛtābhiryoṣābhiryaśodā ca samāgatā

Nanda the cowherd-chief came together with the cowherds and the throngs of cowherd-folk; and Yashoda came, together with well-adorned women.

Verse 7 (padma.6.248.7)

वसुदेवस्त्रियः सर्वा देवकीप्रमुखास्तथा । रेवती रोहिणी देवी याश्चान्याः पुरयोषितः ।

vasudevastriyaḥ sarvā devakīpramukhāstathā revatī rohiṇī devī yāścānyāḥ purayoṣitaḥ

All of Vasudeva's wives, headed by Devaki, likewise Revati, the goddess Rohini, and whatever other women of the city there were —

Verse 8 (padma.6.248.8)

सर्वाण्युद्वाहकर्माणि चक्रुर्हर्षसमन्विताः । सुराणामर्चनं प्रीत्या कर्त्तव्यं तत्र देवकी ।

sarvāṇyudvāhakarmāṇi cakrurharṣasamanvitāḥ surāṇāmarcanaṁ prītyā karttavyaṁ tatra devakī

all performed the wedding rites, filled with joy. The worship of the gods, to be duly performed there with love, Devaki —

Verse 9 (padma.6.248.9)

वृद्धाभिर्नृपयोषिद्भिश्चकार विधिना तदा । सर्वमौद्वाहिकं कर्म उत्सवं हि द्विजोत्तमैः ।

vṛddhābhirnṛpayoṣidbhiścakāra vidhinā tadā sarvamaudvāhikaṁ karma utsavaṁ hi dvijottamaiḥ

together with the elder queens, performed duly. All the marriage rites and the festivities were conducted by the foremost Brahmins.

Verse 10 (padma.6.248.10)

ब्राह्मणान्भोजयामास वस्त्रैराभरणैः शुभैः । उग्रसेनादयस्तत्र राजानश्च सुपूजिताः ।

brāhmaṇānbhojayāmāsa vastrairābharaṇaiḥ śubhaiḥ ugrasenādayastatra rājānaśca supūjitāḥ

Krishna fed the Brahmins, and honored with garments and auspicious ornaments the kings there, headed by Ugrasena, who were duly worshipped.

Verse 11 (padma.6.248.11)

नंदगोपादयो गोपा यशोदाद्याश्च योषितः । बहुभिः स्वर्णरत्नाद्यैर्वासोभिः सविभूषणैः ।

naṁdagopādayo gopā yaśodādyāśca yoṣitaḥ bahubhiḥ svarṇaratnādyairvāsobhiḥ savibhūṣaṇaiḥ

Nanda and the other cowherds, and Yashoda and the other women, with much gold, jewels, garments, and ornaments —

Verse 12 (padma.6.248.12)

पूजिताः संप्रहृष्टास्ते तद्विवाहमहोत्सवे । तौ दंपती समाश्लिष्य प्रणतौ जातवेदसम् ।

pūjitāḥ saṁprahṛṣṭāste tadvivāhamahotsave tau daṁpatī samāśliṣya praṇatau jātavedasam

were honored, and greatly rejoiced at that wedding festival. That couple, having embraced each other and bowed to Agni,

Verse 13 (padma.6.248.13)

वेदविद्भिर्विप्रमुख्यैराशीर्भिरभिनंदितौ । तस्यां विवाहवेद्यां तु शुशुभाते वधूवरौ ।

vedavidbhirvipramukhyairāśīrbhirabhinaṁditau tasyāṁ vivāhavedyāṁ tu śuśubhāte vadhūvarau

were greeted with blessings by the foremost Brahmins, learned in the Veda. Upon that wedding altar, that bride and groom shone resplendent.

Verse 14 (padma.6.248.14)

ब्राह्मणेभ्योऽथ वृद्धेभ्यो राजन्यः सह भार्य्यया । ववंदे देवकीपुत्रो ज्येष्ठस्य भ्रातुरेव च ।

brāhmaṇebhyo'tha vṛddhebhyo rājanyaḥ saha bhāryyayā vavaṁde devakīputro jyeṣṭhasya bhrātureva ca

Then, together with his wife, the son of Devaki bowed to the Brahmins, to the elders, to the kings present, and to his own elder brother.

Verse 15 (padma.6.248.15)

एवमौद्वाहिकं सर्वं निर्वर्त्य मधुसूदनः । व्यसर्जयन्नृपान्सर्वान्ये च तत्र समागताः ।

evamaudvāhikaṁ sarvaṁ nirvartya madhusūdanaḥ vyasarjayannṛpānsarvānye ca tatra samāgatāḥ

Having thus completed all the marriage rites, Madhusudana bade farewell to all the kings and to whoever else had gathered there.

Verse 16 (padma.6.248.16)

प्रस्थिता हरिणा तत्र पूजिता नृपपुंगवाः । ब्राह्मणाः सुमहात्मानो निर्ययुः स्वकमालयम् ।

prasthitā hariṇā tatra pūjitā nṛpapuṁgavāḥ brāhmaṇāḥ sumahātmāno niryayuḥ svakamālayam

Honored by Hari, those foremost kings departed; the greatly noble Brahmins too went forth to their own abodes.

Verse 17 (padma.6.248.17)

रुक्मिण्या सह धर्मात्मा देवकीनंदनोऽव्ययः । उवास सुसुखेनैव दिव्यहर्म्यतले शुभे ।

rukmiṇyā saha dharmātmā devakīnaṁdano'vyayaḥ uvāsa susukhenaiva divyaharmyatale śubhe

The righteous, unfailing son of Devaki, together with Rukmini, dwelt in great happiness upon the floor of his auspicious, divine mansion.

Verse 18 (padma.6.248.18)

तया वै रमयामास नारायण इव श्रिया । संस्तूयमानो मुनिभिर्दिवि देवगणैरपि ।

tayā vai ramayāmāsa nārāyaṇa iva śriyā saṁstūyamāno munibhirdivi devagaṇairapi

With her he took his delight, as Narayana does with Shri, being praised by the sages, and by the hosts of gods in heaven as well.

Verse 19 (padma.6.248.19)

अहन्यहनि हृष्टात्मा सुखेनैव जनार्दनः । अथोवास सुशोभायां द्वारवत्यां सनातनः ।

ahanyahani hṛṣṭātmā sukhenaiva janārdanaḥ athovāsa suśobhāyāṁ dvāravatyāṁ sanātanaḥ

Day after day, his heart joyful, Janardana, that eternal one, dwelt happily in beautiful Dvaravati.
