viṁdānuviṁdasya sutāṁ mitraviṁdāṁ śucismitām svayaṁvarasthitāṁ kanyāmupayeme janārdanaḥ
Janardana married Mitravinda, the sweetly-smiling daughter of Vinda and Anuvinda, present at her own svayamvara.
Verse 4 (padma.6.249.4)
pāśenaikena baddhvā tān vṛṣabhānsaptadurmadān tāṁ vīryaśulkāṁ jagrāha padmapatrāyatekṣaṇaḥ
Binding those seven ferocious bulls with a single noose, that lotus-eyed one won that maiden, whose bride-price was that feat of strength.
Verse 5 (padma.6.249.5)
satrājito mahāratnaṁ syamaṁtākhyaṁ mahīpatiḥ anujāya dadau so'yaṁ prasenāya mahātmane
King Satrajit gave the great jewel named Syamantaka to his younger brother, the great-souled Prasena.
Verse 6 (padma.6.249.6)
yayāce taṁ maṇivaraṁ kadācinmadhusūdanaḥ uvāca vāsudevaṁ taṁ prasenaḥ prasabhaṁ tadā
Once Madhusudana asked for that excellent jewel. Prasena then spoke forcefully to Vasudeva.
Verse 7 (padma.6.249.7)
prasena uvāca bhārānaṣṭasuvarṇāni nityaṁ prasavate maṇiḥ tasmātkasya na dātavyaṁ syamaṁtākhyamidaṁ mayā
Prasena said: "This jewel ever produces eight loads of gold. So why should I give this Syamantaka to anyone?"
Verse 8 (padma.6.249.8)
mahādeva uvāca kṛṣṇastu tadabhiprāyaṁ jñātvā tūṣṇīmuvāsa ha kadācinmṛgayāṁ karttuṁ kṛṣṇaḥ sarvairyadūttamaiḥ
Mahadeva said: Krishna, understanding his intention, remained silent. Once, to go hunting, Krishna, together with all the foremost Yadus —
Verse 9 (padma.6.249.9)
praviveśa mahāraṇyaṁ prasenādyairmahābalaiḥ pratyekaṁ vai mṛgānhaṁtumanuyātāḥ sahasraśaḥ
entered a great forest, together with Prasena and the other mighty ones; all, by the thousands, pursued deer separately.
Verse 10 (padma.6.249.10)
eka eva mahāraṇye praseno dūramāgataḥ taṁ siṁho dṛṣṭamāsādya hatvā ratnaṁ jahāra saḥ
Prasena alone went far into the great forest. A lion, seeing him, attacked and slew him, and took the jewel.
Verse 11 (padma.6.249.11)
taṁ siṁhaṁ jāṁbabānhatvā maṇiṁ gṛhya mahābalaḥ praviveśa bilaṁ tūrṇaṁ divyastrībhirniṣevitam
Jambavan, having slain that lion and taken the jewel, swiftly entered a cave attended by divine women.
Verse 12 (padma.6.249.12)
tasminnastaṁgate sūrye vāsudevaṁ sahānugaḥ caturthyāmuditaṁ caṁdraṁ dṛṣṭvā svaṁ puramāviśat
When the sun had set, Vasudeva, together with his followers, having seen the moon risen on the fourth day, returned to his own city.
Verse 13 (padma.6.249.13)
tataḥ sarve purajanāḥ kṛṣṇaṁ procuḥ parasparam hatvā prasenaṁ goviṁdo mṛgavyājena kānane
Then all the citizens said of Krishna to one another: "Having slain Prasena in the forest under the pretext of hunting, Govinda —
Verse 14 (padma.6.249.14)
syamaṁtakaṁ maṇivaramagrahīdaviśaṁkayā tadākarṇya haristasmindvārakājanabhāṣitam
took the excellent jewel Syamantaka without hesitation." Hearing this talk of the Dvaraka people about himself —
Verse 15 (padma.6.249.15)
ajñalokabhayātsarvairyadubhirgahanaṁ yayau darśayāmāsa tānsarvānsiṁhena nihataṁ vane
out of fear of the ignorant, Hari went into the dense forest together with all the Yadus. He showed them all Prasena slain by the lion.
Verse 16 (padma.6.249.16)
labdhātmaśuddhistatraiva saṁsthāpya mahatīṁ camūm ekaḥ śārṅgagadāpāṇirjagāma gahanaṁ vanam
Having thus obtained proof of his own innocence, and stationing that great host there, he alone, bow and mace in hand, went into the dense forest.
Verse 17 (padma.6.249.17)
dṛṣṭvā mahābilaṁ kṛṣṇaḥ praviveśa viśaṁkitaḥ tatra nānā maṇivaradyotite vimale gṛhe
Seeing a great cave, Krishna entered it without fear. There, in a spotless dwelling lit by various excellent jewels,
Verse 18 (padma.6.249.18)
sutaṁ jāṁbavato dhātrī dolāmāropya līlayā dolāmukhe maṇiṁ dhṛtvā dolayangāyatī mudā
a nurse, having placed Jambavan's son in a swing, playfully, having hung the jewel at the head of the swing, was rocking it, singing joyfully —
Verse 19 (padma.6.249.19)
siṁhaḥ prasenamavadhītsiṁho jāṁbavatā hataḥ sukumāraka mā rodīstava hyeṣa syamaṁtakaḥ
"A lion killed Prasena; that lion was killed by Jambavan. Little darling, don't cry — this Syamantaka is indeed yours!"
Verse 20 (padma.6.249.20)
tacchrutvā vāsudevo'tha śaṁkhaṁ dadhmau pratāpavān tena nādena mahatā nirjagāmātra jāṁbavān
Hearing this, that mighty Vasudeva blew his conch. By that great sound, Jambavan came forth there.
Verse 21 (padma.6.249.21)
tayoryuddhamabhūdghoraṁ daśarātraṁ niraṁtaram muṣṭibhirvajrakalpaiśca sarvabhūtabhayāvaham
A terrible battle ensued between them, unceasing for ten nights, with fists like thunderbolts, striking terror into all beings.
Verse 22 (padma.6.249.22)
kṛṣṇasya balavṛddhiṁ ca tathātmabalasaṁkṣayam avekṣya pūrvavacanaṁ bubudhe paramātmanaḥ
Observing the growth of Krishna's strength and, likewise, the diminishing of his own, he recalled a former word of the Supreme Soul.
Verse 23 (padma.6.249.23)
so'yaṁ rāmo'vatīrṇo'tra dharmatrāṇāya vai punaḥ sa āgato mama svāmī dātuṁ mama manoratham
"This is that same Rama, come down here again for the protection of dharma. My Lord has come to fulfill my heart's desire."
Verse 24 (padma.6.249.24)
evaṁ jñātvātha ṛkṣeśo nirvartya raṇakarma tat prāṁjali prāha goviṁdaṁ ko bhavāniti vismayāt
Realizing this, the lord of the bears, ceasing that battle, with joined palms, in wonder, asked Govinda, "Who are you?"
Verse 25 (padma.6.249.25)
nivartya kadanaṁ śauriḥ proce gaṁbhīrayā girā śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca putro'haṁ vasudevasya vāsudeva itīritaḥ
Ceasing the fight, Shauri spoke in a deep voice. Shri Krishna said: "I am the son of Vasudeva, called Vasudeva.
Verse 26 (padma.6.249.26)
mamaratnaṁ syamaṁtākhyaṁ hṛtavāṁstvaṁ sunirbhayaḥ taddīyatāṁ ca śīghraṁ me anyathā vadhameṣyasi
You have fearlessly taken my jewel, the Syamantaka. Give it to me at once, or else you shall meet your death."
Verse 27 (padma.6.249.27)
mahādeva uvāca tacchrutvā jāṁbavānhṛṣṭaḥ praṇanāmātha daṁḍavat pariṇīya namaskṛtya vinayātprāha keśavam
Mahadeva said: Hearing this, Jambavan, overjoyed, then prostrated full-length; circling him, bowing, he humbly spoke to Keshava.
Verse 28 (padma.6.249.28)
jāṁbavānuvāca dhanyosmi kṛtakṛtyosmi tava saṁdarśanātprabho dāso'haṁ pūrvabhāvena tava devakinaṁdana
Jambavan said: "I am blessed, my purpose is accomplished, by this sight of you, O Lord. By my former nature, O son of Devaki, I am your servant.
Verse 29 (padma.6.249.29)
dattavānasi goviṁda kadanaṁ pūrvakāṁkṣitam mayedaṁ kadanaṁ mohādyatkṛtaṁ svāminā tvayā tatkṣamyatāṁ jagannātha karuṇākara śāśvata
You have granted me, O Govinda, the battle I long desired. Whatever combat I, in delusion, waged against you, my own Master, let it be forgiven, O Lord of the world, O eternal fount of compassion."
Verse 30 (padma.6.249.30)

Mahadeva said: Having said this, bowing and prostrating again and again, and humbly seating the Lord upon a throne set with various jewels,
Verse 31 (padma.6.249.31)
śāradābjanibhau pādau prakṣālya śubhavāriṇā madhuparkavidhānena pūjayitvā yadūdvaham
he washed his feet, like autumn lotuses, with pure water, and worshipped that foremost of the Yadus with the madhuparka rite.
Verse 32 (padma.6.249.32)
vastrairābharaṇairdivyaiḥ pūjayitvā vidhānataḥ putrīṁ jāṁbavatīṁ nāma kanyāṁ lāvaṇyasaṁyutām

Verse 33 (padma.6.249.33)
kanyāratnaṁ dadau tasmai bhāryārthamamitaujase anyaiśca maṇimukhyaiśca syamaṁtākhyaṁ dadau maṇim

Verse 34 (padma.6.249.34)
tatraivodvāhya tāṁ kanyāṁ prahṛṣṭaparavīrahā dadau tasmai parāṁ muktiṁ prītyā jāṁbavate hariḥ
There, marrying that maiden, that slayer of enemy heroes, greatly rejoicing, Hari lovingly gave to Jambavan the supreme liberation.
Verse 35 (padma.6.249.35)

māsi bhādrapade śukle caturthyāṁ caṁdradarśanam mithyābhidūṣaṇaṁ prāhustasmāttatparivarjayet
The sight of the moon on the fourth day of the bright fortnight in the month of Bhadrapada is said to bring false accusation; therefore one should avoid it.
Verse 38 (padma.6.249.38)

airāvataṁ maheṁdrasya tathaivoccaiḥśravaṁ hayam māṇikyādi dhaneśasya śaṁkhapadmanidhiṁ tathā
Mahendra's Airavata elephant, the horse Uchchaihshravas, Kubera's rubies and other gems, and his treasures Shankha and Padma —

striyaścāpsarasaścaiva hṛtavānkṣitinaṁdanaḥ vajrādihetīsteṣāṁ ca balāddhṛtvā divaukasām
and the women and Apsaras too, that son of the Earth carried off; and he also forcibly seized the weapons — the thunderbolt and the rest — of those celestials.
Verse 47 (padma.6.249.47)
taireva sa surānhatvā sabhāṁ mayavinirmitām uvāsa vyomago divyo nagaryāṁ vimaleṁbare
With those very weapons he defeated the gods, and dwelt, sky-traversing, in a divine hall built by Maya, in a city set in the clear sky.
Verse 48 (padma.6.249.48)
tato devagaṇāḥ sarve puraskṛtya śacīpatim bhayārtāḥ śaraṇaṁ jagmuḥ kṛṣṇamakliṣṭakāriṇam
Then all the hosts of gods, with Shachi's husband at their head, terrified, went for refuge to Krishna, the untiring doer.
Verse 49 (padma.6.249.49)

Verse 54 (padma.6.249.54)
udyamya śūlāni tadā yuddhāyābhimukhaṁ yayuḥ tatastu tomarairdivyairbhiṇḍipālaiḥ supaṭṭiśaiḥ
raising their tridents, advanced to face him in battle. Then, with divine lances, javelins, and fine battle-axes —
Verse 55 (padma.6.249.55)
keśavaṁ tāḍayāmāsuḥ palālairiva pāvakam tatastu śārṅgamādāya bhagavāngaruḍadhvajaḥ
they struck at Keshava, as one might strike fire with straw. Then, taking up the Sharnga bow, the Lord whose banner bears Garuda —
Verse 56 (padma.6.249.56)
divyaśastrāṇi ciccheda bāṇairagniśikhopamaiḥ teṣāṁ śirodharā nāgānaśvāṁścaiva tarasvinaḥ

Verse 57 (padma.6.249.57)
cakreṇaiva praciccheda vīryavānpuruṣottamaḥ keciccakreṇa saṁchinnāstathānye śaratāḍitāḥ
that valorous Purushottama cut down with his discus alone. Some were severed by the discus, others struck down by arrows,
Verse 58 (padma.6.249.58)
