Uttara Khanda · Chapter 252
The Determination of Krishna's Departure to His Own Abode
Verse 1 (padma.6.252.1)
śrīrudra uvāca atha magadhādhipaḥ kaṁsavadhānaṁtaraṁ dviṣanneva yādavānsadā pīḍayāmāsa te duḥkhitāḥ kṛṣṇamūcuḥ
Shri Rudra said: Then the lord of Magadha, after the slaying of Kamsa, hating the Yadavas, continually oppressed them; they, distressed, spoke to Krishna.
Verse 2 (padma.6.252.2)
sa ca bhīmārjunāvāhūya saṁmaṁtrayāmāsa kṛṣṇaḥ anena rudra pūḥjitastatprasādācchastrairavadhyaḥ paraṁ kenāpiprakāreṇa haṁtavya iti
Krishna, summoning Bhima and Arjuna, took counsel: "He has worshipped Rudra, and by his grace is invulnerable to weapons — yet he must be slain by some means."
Verse 3 (padma.6.252.3)
atha vicārya bhīmamāha enaṁ pratimallayuddhaṁ kuru tattena pratijñātam
Then, having deliberated, he said to Bhima, "Engage him in wrestling combat" — and that was agreed upon.
Verse 4 (padma.6.252.4)
atha sakala carācarajagadvaṁdyo vāsudevo bhīmārjunasahito jarāsaṁdhasya purīṁ gatvā vipraveṣeṇa tasyāṁtaḥpuramavāpa
Then Vasudeva, worshipped by the entire moving and unmoving world, together with Bhima and Arjuna, going to Jarasandha's city, in the guise of Brahmins, entered his inner chamber.
Verse 5 (padma.6.252.5)
so'pi mahāvīryānkṣattriyānyuddhe nirjitya balādgṛhītvā svaveśmani nirudhya māsimāsi kṛṣṇacaturdaśyāmekaikaṁ hatvā tadraktenaiva baliṁ bhairavāyākarot
He, having conquered mighty Kshatriyas in battle, forcibly seizing them and confining them in his own house, each month, on the dark fourteenth day, slew one of them, and with that very blood made an offering to Bhairava.
Verse 6 (padma.6.252.6)
evaṁvidhaṁ sakalajanapārthivavadhaṁ kurvato jarāsaṁdhasya samudyamāno bhīmārjunasahitastasya gṛhe vipraveṣeṇaiva praviveśa
While Jarasandha was thus engaged in the slaughter of kings from every land, they, together with Bhima and Arjuna, entered his house in the guise of Brahmins.
Verse 7 (padma.6.252.7)
sa tu tāndṛṣṭvā daṁḍavatpraṇato bhūtvā yathocitāsaneṣu niveśya madhuparkavidhānena saṁpūjya dhanyosmi kṛtakṛtyosmi kimarthaṁ bhavanto me samīpa āgatāstadvaktavyamahaṁ tatsarvaṁ bhavadbhyo dāsyāmītyuvāca
He, seeing them, prostrated himself, seated them in fitting seats, honored them with the madhuparka rite, and said: "I am blessed, my purpose accomplished. For what purpose have you come to me? Tell me, and I shall give you all of it."
Verse 8 (padma.6.252.8)
teṣāṁ vāsudevaḥ prahasanpārthivaṁ tamuvāca kṛṣṇabhīmārjunā yuddhārthamāgatāḥ sma asmākamanyatamaṁ dvaṁdvayuddhārthaṁ vṛṇīṣvetyavadat
Vasudeva, laughing, said to that king: "We — Krishna, Bhima, and Arjuna — have come for battle; choose one of us for single combat."
Verse 9 (padma.6.252.9)
so'pi tathetyavadattato dvaṁdvayuddhārthaṁ mārutiṁ varayāmāsa
He too agreed, and then chose the son of the wind, Bhima, for single combat.
Verse 10 (padma.6.252.10)
tato bhīmajarāsaṁdhayorabhito bhayaṁkaraṁ mallayuddhaṁ niraṁtaraṁ paṁcaviṁśativāsaramabhūt
Then a terrible wrestling match between Bhima and Jarasandha went on continuously for twenty-five days.
Verse 11 (padma.6.252.11)
tataḥ kṛṣṇenaiva saṁcodito vāyuputrastasya śarīraṁ dvidhākṛtya bhūmau nipātayāmāsa evaṁ jarāsaṁdhaṁ pāṁḍuputreṇa hatvā tānjarāsaṁdhanirodhitānvāsudevo'pi pārthivānmocayāmāsa
Then, prompted by Krishna himself, the son of the Wind split his body in two and cast it upon the ground. Thus, having Jarasandha slain by the son of Pandu, Vasudeva also freed those kings held captive by him.
Verse 12 (padma.6.252.12)
nihatya vāyuputreṇa jarāṁsaṁdhaṁ yadūdvahaḥ tadgṛhe sanniruddhāṁstu mocayāmāsa pārthivān
Having had Jarasandha slain by the son of the Wind, that foremost of the Yadus freed the kings confined in his house.
Verse 13 (padma.6.252.13)
te ca tatra namaskṛtya stutvā ca madhusūdanam svānsvānjanapadānsarve jagmuḥ kṛṣṇena rakṣitāḥ
They, bowing there and praising Madhusudana, all went to their own realms, protected by Krishna.
Verse 14 (padma.6.252.14)
atha tābhyāmiṁdraprasthaṁ gatvā vāsudevastatra mahākratuṁ rājasūyaṁ yudhiṣṭhiraṁ kārayāmāsa
Then, going with those two to Indraprastha, Vasudeva had Yudhishthira perform there the great sacrifice, the Rajasuya.
Verse 15 (padma.6.252.15)
tatra samāpte kratau agrapūjāṁ bhīṣmānumatena kṛṣṇāya dattavān
There, when the sacrifice was completed, with Bhishma's approval, [Yudhishthira] gave the offering of first honor to Krishna.
Verse 16 (padma.6.252.16)
tatra śiśupālaḥ kṛṣṇaṁ bahūnyākṣepavākyānyuktavān
There Shishupala spoke many reproachful words against Krishna.
Verse 17 (padma.6.252.17)
kṛṣṇo'pi sudarśanena tasya śiraściccheda
Krishna too severed his head with Sudarshana.
Verse 18 (padma.6.252.18)
asau janmatrayāvasāne hareḥ sārūpyamagamat
He, at the end of his three births, attained a form like Hari's own.
Verse 19 (padma.6.252.19)
atha śiśupālaṁ nihataṁ śrutvā daṁtavaktraḥ kṛṣṇena yoddhuṁ mathurāmājagāma
Then, hearing that Shishupala had been slain, Dantavaktra came to Mathura to fight Krishna.
Verse 20 (padma.6.252.20)
kṛṣṇastu tacchrutvā rathamāruhya tena yoddhuṁ mathurāmāyayau
Krishna, hearing this, mounting his chariot, went to Mathura to fight him.
Verse 21 (padma.6.252.21)
daṁtavaktravāsudevayorahorātraṁ mathurāpuradvāri yamunātīre saṁgrāmaḥ samavarttata kṛṣṇastu gadayā taṁ jaghāna
A battle between Dantavaktra and Vasudeva took place, day and night, at the gate of Mathura, on the bank of the Yamuna; Krishna slew him with his mace.
Verse 22 (padma.6.252.22)
sa tu cūrṇitasarvāṁgo vajranirbhinna mahīdhara iva gatāsuravanitale papāta
He, his whole body crushed, fell to the earth, lifeless, like a mountain shattered by the thunderbolt.
Verse 23 (padma.6.252.23)
so'pi hareḥ sāyujyaṁ yogigamyaṁ nityānaṁdasukhaṁ śāśvataṁ paramaṁ padamavāpa
He too attained union with Hari, that eternal, supreme abode of ever-blissful happiness, attainable by yogis.
Verse 24 (padma.6.252.24)
itthaṁ jayavijayau sanakādiśāpavyājena kevalaṁ bhagavatolīlārthaṁ saṁsṛtāvavatīrya janmatraye'pi tenaiva nihatau janmatrayāvasāne muktimavāptau
Thus Jaya and Vijaya, on the pretext of Sanaka's curse, purely for the Lord's own play, having descended into the round of birth, in all three births slain by him alone, at the end of their three births attained liberation.
Verse 25 (padma.6.252.25)
kṛṣṇo'pi taṁ hatvā yamunāmuttīrya naṁdavrajaṁ gatvā prāktanau pitarāvabhivādya āśvāsya tābhyāṁ sāśrukaṁṭhamāligitaḥ sakalagopavṛddhānpraṇamyāśvāsya ratnābharaṇādibhistatrasthānsaṁtarpayāmāsa
Krishna too, having slain him, crossing the Yamuna, going to Nanda's cow-settlement, saluted his former parents and comforted them, was embraced by them, their throats choked with tears; bowing to all the elder cowherds and comforting them, he satisfied those present there with jewels, ornaments, and the like.
Verse 26 (padma.6.252.26)
kāliṁdyāḥ puline ramye puṇyavṛkṣasamāvṛte gopanārībhiraniśaṁ krīḍayāmāsa keśavaḥ
On the delightful sandbank of the Yamuna, encircled by sacred trees, Keshava played unceasingly with the cowherd women.
Verse 27 (padma.6.252.27)
ramyakelisukhenaiva gopaveṣadharo hariḥ baddhapremarasenātra māsadvayamuvāsa ha
Hari, wearing the guise of a cowherd, with the sheer joy of delightful play, bound by the sentiment of love, dwelt there for two months.
Verse 28 (padma.6.252.28)
atha tatrasthā naṁdagopādayaḥ sarvejanāḥ putradārasahitāḥ paśupakṣimṛgādayaśca vāsudevaprasādena divyarūpadharā vimānamārūḍhāḥ paramaṁ vaikuṁṭhalokamavāpuḥ
Then all the people there — Nanda and the other cowherds, together with their sons and wives, and the beasts, birds, and other creatures too — by Vasudeva's grace, taking on divine forms and mounting celestial cars, attained the supreme world of Vaikuntha.
Verse 29 (padma.6.252.29)
kṛṣṇastu naṁdagopavrajaukasāṁ sarveṣāṁ paramaṁ nirāmayaṁ svapadaṁ datvā divi devagaṇaiḥ saṁstūyamāno dvāravatīṁ śrīmatīṁ viveśa
Krishna, having given his own supreme, untroubled abode to all the dwellers of Nanda's cow-settlement, being praised by the hosts of gods in heaven, entered glorious Dvaravati.
Verse 30 (padma.6.252.30)
tatra vasudevograsenasaṁkarṣaṇapradyumnāniruddhākrūrādibhiḥ pratyahaṁ saṁpūjita ṣoḍaśasahasrabhāryābhiraṣṭābhirdivyamahiṣībhiśca viśvarūpadharo divyaratnamaya nānāgṛhāṁtareṣu sutakusumāṁcita ślakṣṇataraparyaṁkeṣu ramayāmāsa
There, honored daily by Vasudeva, Ugrasena, Sankarshana, Pradyumna, Aniruddha, Akrura and the others, bearer of universal form, he took his delight with his sixteen thousand wives and his eight divine queens, upon the softest couches strewn with flowers, in the various divine, jewel-studded chambers.
Verse 31 (padma.6.252.31)
atha rāmakṛṣṇasatīrthyo vipro bālasakhā sadātyaṁtadāridryapīḍito muṣṭimātrānyācanāptapṛthukāñjīrṇavāsasi nibadhya vāsudevaṁ draṣṭuṁ śrīmatīṁ dvārakānagarīmājagāma
Then a Brahmin, a fellow-disciple of Rama and Krishna, a childhood friend, ever afflicted by extreme poverty, having tied up a mere handful of beaten rice obtained by begging in the corner of his worn garment, came to glorious Dvaraka city, to see Vasudeva.
Verse 32 (padma.6.252.32)
sa tu rukmiṇyaṁtaḥpuradvāri kṣaṇaṁ tūṣṇīṁ tasthau
He stood silently for a moment at the gate of Rukmini's inner palace.
Verse 33 (padma.6.252.33)
kṛṣṇo'pi samāgataṁ brāhmaṇaṁ jñātvā pradyumnena namaskṛtvā vāmakaraṁ gṛhītvā gṛhāṁtare svāsane niveśya bhayādvepamānaṁ taṁ rukmiṇīhastagatasuvarṇakalaśajalena pādau prakṣālya madhuparkeṇa pūjayāmāsa
Krishna too, learning of the Brahmin's arrival, with Pradyumna bowing, took his left hand, seated him within upon his own seat, and, seeing him trembling with fear, washed his feet with water from a golden vessel held by Rukmini, and honored him with the madhuparka rite.
Verse 34 (padma.6.252.34)
sudhāmṛtopamairannapānādyaistarpayitvā tasya jīrṇavastrāṁtare yācanāptapṛthukānsvayameva hastena gṛhītvā prahasanjagrāsa
Having satisfied him with food and drink like the nectar of immortality, he himself took, with his own hand, the beaten rice obtained by begging, from the corner of his worn garment, and, laughing, ate it.
Verse 35 (padma.6.252.35)
kṛṣṇena pṛthuke bhakṣite tasminneva kṣaṇe tasya bahudhanadhānyavastrābharaṇasaṁbhūtaṁ mahadaiśvaryamabhūt
When Krishna ate the beaten rice, at that very instant, great prosperity, consisting of much wealth, grain, garments, and ornaments, came to him.
Verse 36 (padma.6.252.36)
sa tu kṛṣṇena visṛṣṭo mama kiṁcidvastraṁ vā dhanaṁ vā kṛṣṇena na dattamiti manyamānaḥ svapuraṁ viveśa
He, taking leave of Krishna, thinking, "Krishna has given me neither cloth nor wealth," entered his own town.
Verse 37 (padma.6.252.37)
atha bahudhanadhānyayutaṁ svagṛhaṁ dṛṣṭvā tatprasādādidaṁ labdhamiti vadanprahṛṣṭenāṁtarātmanā divya vastrābharaṇādinā bhāryayā saha sarvānkāmānbhuktvā harisaṁtuṣṭyai bahuyajñāniṣṭvā tatprasādena paramaṁ nityaṁ svargasukhamavāpa
Then, seeing his own house filled with much wealth and grain, saying, "This has been obtained by his grace," his inner self overjoyed, he, with divine garments and ornaments, together with his wife, enjoyed every desire, performed many sacrifices for Hari's satisfaction, and by his grace attained the supreme, eternal joy of heaven.
Verse 38 (padma.6.252.38)
atha dhṛtarāṣṭratanayo duryodhanaḥ pāṁḍutanayānkapaṭadyūtavyājena rājyamapahṛtya svarāṣṭrādvivāsayāmāsa
Then Dhritarashtra's son Duryodhana, through the pretext of a fraudulent game of dice, seized the kingdom from Pandu's sons and exiled them from their own realm.
Verse 39 (padma.6.252.39)
te tu yudhiṣṭhirabhīmārjunanakulasahadevāḥ supatnyā drau padyā saha mahāraṇyaṁ gatvā tatra dvādaśābdānsthitvā saṁvatsaraparyaṁtamajñātāḥ sarve matsyadeśādhipatervirāṭasya niveśane sthitvā vāsudevena sahāyena dhārtarāṣṭrānyoddhumājagmuḥ
Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva, together with their good wife Draupadi, went to the great forest, and, dwelling there for twelve years, and then for one further year unrecognized, in the household of Virata, lord of the Matsya country, came, with Vasudeva as their ally, to fight the sons of Dhritarashtra.
Verse 40 (padma.6.252.40)
teṣāṁ dhārtarāṣṭrapāṁḍuputrāṇāṁ nānādeśādhipanṛpaiḥ kurukṣetramahāpuṇye devānāmapi bhayaṁkaro mahāsaṁgrāmo'bhavat
Between those sons of Dhritarashtra and the sons of Pandu, with kings, lords of various lands, on the most sacred field of Kurukshetra, a great battle arose, terrifying even to the gods.
Verse 41 (padma.6.252.41)
atha śrīkṛṣṇo'pyarjunasārathyaṁ kurvannarjune svaśaktimāveśya tena duryodhanabhīṣmadro- ṇapramukhānsarvānpārthivānekādaśākṣauhiṇībalasahitānkurukṣetre hatvā pāṁḍavānrājye sthāpayitvā niḥśeṣeṇa sarvabhūbhāramapāsya svāṁ purīṁ praviveśa
Then Shri Krishna too, acting as Arjuna's charioteer, infusing Arjuna with his own power, through him slew, at Kurukshetra, all the kings headed by Duryodhana, Bhishma, and Drona, together with their eleven akshauhinis of troops, and, having established the Pandavas in their kingdom, having thus entirely removed the earth's burden, entered his own city.
Verse 42 (padma.6.252.42)
kasyacittvathakālasya katipayāhani vaidiko brāhmaṇo mṛtaṁ paṁcavārṣikaṁ bālamādāya rājadvāri nidhāya bahuśo vilapanbahūnyākrośavākyāni kṛṣṇaṁ jagāda
After some time, on a certain day, a Vedic Brahmin, taking his dead five-year-old child, laid him at the palace gate, and, lamenting greatly, spoke many reproachful words to Krishna.
Verse 43 (padma.6.252.43)
kṛṣṇastamākrośaṁ śrutvā tūṣṇīmuvāsa
Krishna, hearing that reproach, remained silent.
Verse 44 (padma.6.252.44)
sa tu mama paṁcaputrāḥ pūrvaṁ hatā ayaṁ tu ṣaṣṭhaḥ enaṁ kṛṣṇo na jīvayiṣyati tarhi rājadvāri mariṣyāmītyuvāca
He said, "My five previous sons were slain earlier; this is the sixth. If Krishna does not restore him to life, then I shall die here at the palace gate."
Verse 45 (padma.6.252.45)
tasminkāle arjunaḥ kṛṣṇaṁ draṣṭumāgatastathāvidhaṁ taṁ putraśokena vilapaṁtaṁ dadarśa
At that time, Arjuna, coming to see Krishna, saw him thus, lamenting in grief for his son.
Verse 46 (padma.6.252.46)
arjuno'pi kāladharmamupāgataṁ paṁcavārṣikaṁ bālakaṁ dṛṣṭvā kṛpayāviṣṭastava putramahaṁjīvayiṣyāmīti brāhmaṇāyābhayaṁ datvā pratiśrutavān
Arjuna too, seeing that five-year-old boy who had met his end, filled with compassion, gave the Brahmin assurance, promising, "I shall restore your son to life."
Verse 47 (padma.6.252.47)
brāhmaṇastu tenāśvāsito hṛṣṭavān
The Brahmin, thus reassured by him, was overjoyed.
Verse 48 (padma.6.252.48)

Then, having invoked over that Brahmin's child many life-restoring weapon-mantras, and seeing that life had not been obtained, his promise rendered vain, filled with great grief, he wished by that very means to give up his own life.
Verse 49 (padma.6.252.49)

Krishna, learning of all this, coming out from the inner palace, said to that Vedic Brahmin, "I shall give you back all your sons," and, having reassured him, mounting Garuda, together with Arjuna, went to the Vaishnava world.
Verse 50 (padma.6.252.50)

There, in a divine, jewel-adorned pavilion, seeing Narayana seated together with the Goddess, Krishna and Arjuna bowed to him. He, embracing them both with his arms, asked, "For what purpose have you come?"
Verse 51 (padma.6.252.51)

Then Narayana gave to Krishna those sons of the Brahmin, present there, of that same age.
Verse 53 (padma.6.252.53)
śrīkṛṣṇo'pi tānvainateyaskaṁdhe samāropya harṣasamanvito'rjunasahitaḥ svayamapyāruhya divi devagaṇaiḥ saṁstūyamāno dvāravatīmāviveśa
Shri Krishna too, setting them upon Garuda's shoulders, filled with joy, together with Arjuna, himself also mounting, being praised by the hosts of gods in heaven, entered Dvaravati.
Verse 54 (padma.6.252.54)
tasmai brāhmaṇāya paṁcavarṣavayaḥsthānṣaṭputrāndadau so'pyatyaṁtarhaṣasamanvitaḥ kṛṣṇaṁ varddhayasvetyāśiṣaṁ prāyacchat
He gave to that Brahmin his six sons, present there at five years of age; he too, filled with utmost joy, gave Krishna the blessing, "May you prosper."
Verse 55 (padma.6.252.55)
arjunastu saphalāṁ pratijñāmavāpya kṛṣṇaṁ namaskṛtya yudhiṣṭhirapālitāṁ svāṁ purīmājagāma
And Arjuna, his promise thus fulfilled, bowing to Krishna, went to his own city, ruled by Yudhishthira.
Verse 56 (padma.6.252.56)
kṛṣṇasya ṣoḍaśasahasrabhāryāsvayutasāhasraputrā jajñire teṣāṁ putrapautrasaṁkhyāṁ vaktuṁ na śakyate
To Krishna's sixteen thousand wives were born a great multitude of sons; the count of their sons and grandsons cannot be told.
Verse 57 (padma.6.252.57)
atrāpi ślokaḥ aṣṭauśatāni putrāṇāṁ sahasrāṇyayutaṁ tathā pradyumnaḥ prathamasteṣāṁ sarveṣāṁ rukmiṇīsutaḥ
Here too is a verse: many hundred thousands and ten thousand sons in total — foremost among all of them was Pradyumna, the son of Rukmini.
Verse 58 (padma.6.252.58)

This earth became covered with those countless Yadavas.

punarapyavanībhāraśaṁkayā kṛṣṇastu tānṛṣiśāpavyājena saṁhartumaicchat
Once again, out of concern for the earth's burden, Krishna wished to destroy them, under the pretext of a sage's curse.
Verse 60 (padma.6.252.60)

Once, all the young princes went to the Narmada river to sport.

There, seeing the great sage Kanva performing austerities, they dressed Jambavati's son Samba in women's clothing, tied an iron pestle to his belly, and, coming near the sage, all bowing, placed Samba, disguised as a wife, before him, and said, "Tell us, will this one's womb bear a girl or a boy?"
Verse 62 (padma.6.252.62)
sa tu manasā tadvijñāya tānamarṣamāṇaḥ sarvānanena musalena yūyaṁ sarve nihatā bhavatetyuvāca
He, perceiving the trick with his mind, angered, said to them all, "By this very pestle, all of you shall be slain."
Verse 63 (padma.6.252.63)
sarve samudvignamanasaḥ kṛṣṇaṁ sametya maharṣiṇoktaṁ tatkarma nivedayāmāsuḥ
All of them, their minds troubled, going to Krishna, reported that deed and what the great sage had spoken.
Verse 64 (padma.6.252.64)
kṛṣṇo'pi tadāyasaṁ musalaṁ cūrṇībhūtaṁ hrade nipātayāmāsa
Krishna too had that iron pestle ground to powder and cast into a lake.
Verse 65 (padma.6.252.65)
tadayaścūrṇībhūtabījasamudbhūtā vajrasannibhā mahākāśāḥ saṁbabhūvuḥ
From those powdered iron seeds grew great reeds, hard as the thunderbolt.
Verse 66 (padma.6.252.66)

kadācitsarve yādavā rāmakṛṣṇapradyumnādayo maghavatā preṣitāṁ vāruṇīṁ pītvā mattā babhūvuḥ
Once, all the Yadavas — Rama, Krishna, Pradyumna, and the others — drinking the liquor sent by Indra, became intoxicated.
Verse 68 (padma.6.252.68)
parasparaṁ vīraṇaṁ nītvā bahūnyākrośavākyāni vadaṁto yuddhaṁ cakruḥ kṣayaṁ ca gatāḥ
Taking up the reeds against one another, speaking many reproachful words, they fought, and were destroyed.
Verse 69 (padma.6.252.69)
kṛṣṇastu yuddhaśrāṁtaḥ kalpatarucchāyāyāṁ śayanaṁ cakāra sa niṣādo dhanurbāṇaṁ gṛhītvā kheṭakavṛttiṁ jagāma
Krishna, weary from the battle, lay down in the shade of a wish-fulfilling tree. That hunter, taking bow and arrow, went out to hunt.
Verse 70 (padma.6.252.70)
evaṁ niḥśeṣaṁ tyaktajīvitā babhūvuste sarve svānsvāṁstridaśānprapedire
Thus, all of them, to the last, gave up their lives, and each attained his own true divine state.
Verse 71 (padma.6.252.71)

Thus, having destroyed everyone by the pestle-weapon, that god, now alone, lay down, sleeping in the shade of a great tree amid thick shrubs, meditating upon himself as the fourfold Vasudeva-form, placing one foot upon his knee, seated so as to relinquish his human body.
Verse 72 (padma.6.252.72)
etasminantare mṛgayājīviko hareḥ sa tadā kālaprabhāvena cakravajradhvajāṁkuśādicihnitamatiraktatamaṁ hareḥ pādakamalaṁ dṛṣṭvā vivyādha
Meanwhile, that hunter, living by the chase, then, by the power of Time, seeing Hari's most reddish lotus-foot, marked with the discus, thunderbolt, banner, and goad, pierced it with his arrow.
Verse 73 (padma.6.252.73)
tadanaṁtaraṁ śrīkṛṣṇaṁ jñātvā sumahābhayārtaḥ pravepamānaḥ kṛtāṁjalipuṭo mahadaparādhaḥ sakalopahriyatāmiti taṁ praṇanāma
Immediately after, recognizing Shri Krishna, stricken with the greatest fear, trembling, with joined palms, crying, "A great offense — let it be entirely removed," he bowed to him.
Verse 74 (padma.6.252.74)
śrīkṛṣṇastathābhūtaṁ dṛṣṭvā sudhāmayakarābhyāṁ tamutthāpya bhavatānāparāddhaṁ kṛtamiti vadanmahābhayapīḍitamāśvāsayannuvāca
Shri Krishna, seeing him thus, raising him up with his own nectar-like hands, saying "No offense has been done by you," reassuring him, stricken as he was with great fear, spoke.
Verse 75 (padma.6.252.75)
tato yogigamyamapunarāvṛttiśāśvataṁ sarvopaniṣadamayaṁ vaiṣṇavaṁ lokaṁ pradadau
Then he gave him that Vaishnava world, attainable by yogis, eternal, without return, consisting of the essence of all the Upanishads.
Verse 76 (padma.6.252.76)

He, at that very moment, casting off his human form, taking on a form consisting of the five Upanishadic emanations, together with all his sons and wives, mounting a blazing, divine celestial car, resembling the splendor of a thousand suns, thronged with hosts of divine Apsaras, that golden effulgence, went to the one supreme abode called Vasudeva.
Verse 77 (padma.6.252.77)

etasminnaṁtare devyarjunastadāruhya pariṇīya namaskṛtvā kiṁ karomīti puṭāṁjaliruvāca
Meanwhile, O Goddess, Arjuna, mounting it, circling it, and bowing, said with joined palms, "What am I to do?"
Verse 81 (padma.6.252.81)

Krishna said to him: "O Partha, I am going to my own world. You, going to Dvaravati, bring the eight wives, Rukmini and the others, present there, and send them to my body."
Verse 82 (padma.6.252.82)

etasminnaṁtare devā vimānasthā nabhasi saṁsthitāḥ svarlokaṁ yiyāntaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ dṛṣṭvā ṛṣibhiḥ sārddhaṁ stutvā puṣpavarṣāṇi vavṛṣuḥ
Meanwhile, the gods, stationed in their celestial cars in the sky, seeing Krishna about to depart to the heavenly world, together with the sages, praising him, rained down showers of flowers.
Verse 84 (padma.6.252.84)

Krishna too, laying aside his human body, and taking up his Vasudeva-form body, the cause of the maintenance and dissolution of the entire universe, the knower of all fields, the inner controller, the object of yogis' meditation, untouched by affliction, mounting Garuda, praised by the great sages, departed.
Verse 85 (padma.6.252.85)
arjuno vasudevograsenābhyāṁ rukmiṇyādimahiṣībhyastatsarvaṁ kathayāmāsa
Arjuna told all of this to Vasudeva and Ugrasena, and to the queens headed by Rukmini.
Verse 86 (padma.6.252.86)
tacchrutvā sarve paurajanāḥ striyaśca dvāravatīmutsṛjyāṁtaḥpurādbahirniṣkramya sarvāstāḥ kṛṣṇavallabhā vasudevograsenasahitāḥ śīghrameva hareḥ samīpaṁ jagmuḥ
Hearing this, all the citizens and the women, abandoning Dvaravati, coming out from the inner palace, all those beloved wives of Krishna, together with Vasudeva and Ugrasena, went swiftly to Hari's presence.
Verse 87 (padma.6.252.87)

Verse 88 (padma.6.252.88)

And Revati, embracing Balabhadra's body, entering the fire, obtaining a new body within it, mounting a divine celestial car, attained her husband's abode, the divine world of Sankarshana.
Verse 89 (padma.6.252.89)
tathaiva pradyumnena saha rukmaputrī tathāniruddhenoṣāpi sarvāśca yādavastriyaḥ svasvabhartuḥ śarīrāṇi saṁpūjyāgnipraveśaṁ cakruḥ
Likewise Rukma's daughter, together with Pradyumna, and Usha, together with Aniruddha, and all the wives of the Yadavas, honoring their respective husbands' bodies, entered the fire.
Verse 90 (padma.6.252.90)

tasminsamaye dvāravatīpurī mahodadhau nimagnābhūt
At that time the city of Dvaravati became submerged in the great ocean.
Verse 94 (padma.6.252.94)
tataḥ sarvāḥ ṣoḍaśasahasrabhāryyā arjunenasaheṁdraprasthaṁ gacchaṁtīrdasyavo jagṛhuḥ
Then, as all those sixteen thousand wives were going with Arjuna to Indraprastha, robbers seized them.
Verse 95 (padma.6.252.95)

Formerly, divine and gandharva women, seeing the great sage Ashtavakra, laughed at him; therefore they were cursed by him: "You shall become courtesans." Then, having appeased and honored him, by his grace they obtained as husband Vasudeva, worshipped by all the worlds — yet, by that same curse, they in this final birth fell into the hands of robbers.
Verse 96 (padma.6.252.96)

Arjuna too, defeated by the robbers, overcome with grief, thinking, "My arm's strength and valor, all my glory, has departed together with Krishna himself," saying, "Today my fortune has come to an end," his splendor entirely spent like the evening sun at twilight, went to his own city.
Verse 97 (padma.6.252.97)
