The Telling of Vishnu-Worship Ritual and Vaishnava Conduct

Chapter 252All chaptersChapter 254

Verse 1 (padma.6.253.1)

śrīpārvatyuvāca bhagavansarvamākhyātaṁ vaibhavāvasthitaṁ hareḥ etasminrāmakṛṣṇābhyāṁ caritramati vismitam

Shri Parvati said: O Lord, you have told me the entire state of Hari's glory, and this most wondrous story of Rama and Krishna.

Verse 2 (padma.6.253.2)

aho rāmasyacaritaṁ kṛṣṇasya ca mahātmanaḥ śṛṇvatyā mama deveśa kalpāṁtaraśatairapi

O Lord of gods, even listening for hundreds of aeons to this story of Rama and of the great-souled Krishna —

Verse 3 (padma.6.253.3)

tṛptiṁ naiveti bhūteśa ceto harikathāmṛtam adhunā śrotumicchāmi viṣṇormāhātmyamuttamam tatpūjanavidhiṁ deva śrotumicchāmyahaṁ tathā

O Lord of beings, my mind never finds satiety in this nectar of Hari's story. Now I wish to hear of Vishnu's excellent glory, and, O God, I wish to hear his worship-rite too.

Verse 4 (padma.6.253.4)

śrīrudra uvāca śṛṇu devi pravakṣyāmi hareśca sumahātmanaḥ sthāpanaṁ ca svayaṁ vyaktaṁ dvividhaṁ tatprakīrtitam

Shri Rudra said: Listen, O Goddess, I shall tell of the great-souled Hari. His installation is declared to be of two kinds: self-manifest, and set up by rite.

Verse 5 (padma.6.253.5)

śilā mṛddārulohādyaiḥ kṛtvā pratikṛtiṁ hareḥ śrautasmārtāgamaproktakriyāsaṁsthāpanaṁ hi yat

Making an image of Hari from stone, clay, wood, metal, or the like, and installing it according to the rite declared in Shruti, Smriti, and Agama —

Verse 6 (padma.6.253.6)

tatsthāpanamiti proktaṁ svayaṁ vyaktaṁ hi me śṛṇu yasminsaṁnihito viṣṇuḥ svayameva nṛṇāṁ bhuvi

this is called "Sthapana" (established image); now hear from me of the "self-manifest" — that image in which Vishnu himself, for the good of mankind, dwells upon the earth —

Verse 7 (padma.6.253.7)

pāṣāṇadārvorātmeśaḥ svayaṁ vyaktaṁ hi tatsmṛtam svayaṁ vyaktaṁ sthāpitaṁ vā pūjayenmadhusūdanam

in stone or wood, of itself, that Lord of the self is remembered as self-manifest. Whether self-manifest or installed, one should worship Madhusudana in either.

Verse 8 (padma.6.253.8)

devatānāṁ marhaṣīṇāmarcanārthe sanātanaḥ svayameva jagannāthaḥ sānnidhyaṁ yāti keśavaḥ

For the worship of the gods and the great sages, that eternal Lord of the world, Keshava, himself grants his presence.

Verse 9 (padma.6.253.9)

yasya yadvigrahe bhogyaṁ tadevāvirabhūdbhuvi tadeva pūjayennityaṁ tasminneva rametsadā

In whatever image what is fitting for whom appears upon the earth, that very image should ever be worshipped, and one should ever delight in that alone.

Verse 10 (padma.6.253.10)

śrīraṅgaśāyī deveśo vidhinārcyaḥ surottamaḥ sa evekṣvākunāthānāṁ tapasāvirabhūdbhuvi

The Lord of gods reclining at Shrirangam, best of the celestials, is duly worshipped by rite; he it was who, through the austerity of the Ikshvaku lords, appeared upon the earth.

Verse 11 (padma.6.253.11)

mamāpi kāśyāṁ saṁpūjyo mādhavaḥ kaluṣāpahaḥ yatra yatra gṛhe ramye svayaṁ vyaktaḥ sanātanaḥ

In Kashi too, the sin-removing Madhava is worshipped even by me. Wherever, in any delightful house, that self-manifest, eternal Lord has appeared,

Verse 12 (padma.6.253.12)

tatratatra samāgamya rame'haṁ saṁvyavasthitaḥ nāṣṭāṁgayoge yajñeśastvarcāyāṁ viṁdate nṛṇām

there, again and again, I come and dwell. In eightfold yoga the Lord of sacrifice is not found by men as easily as he is found in his image.

Verse 13 (padma.6.253.13)

cakṣuṣorviṣayaṁ prāpya dadāti varamīpsitam sarvāvasthāsu saulabhyamarcāyāṁ labhyate janaiḥ

Becoming an object of the eyes, he grants the desired boon. In every state, men find him readily accessible in his image —

Verse 14 (padma.6.253.14)

ajñānāmapi sānnidhyaṁ sarvadā pṛthivītale jaṁbūdvīpe mahāpuṇye varṣe vai bhārate śubhe

even the ignorant ever find his presence upon the earth. In the most sacred Jambudvipa, in auspicious Bharatavarsha —

Verse 15 (padma.6.253.15)

arcāyāṁ saṁnidhau viṣṇurnetareṣu kadācana tattasmādbhārate varṣe munibhistridaśairapi

in the image alone is Vishnu's presence; never in other worlds. Therefore, in Bharatavarsha, served by sages and by the thirty-three gods too —

Verse 16 (padma.6.253.16)

sevitaḥ satataṁ devi tapoyajñakriyādibhiḥ bhārate'sminmahāvarṣe nityaṁ saṁnihito hariḥ

O Goddess, ever served with austerities, sacrifices, and rites, in this great Bharatavarsha, Hari ever abides.

Verse 17 (padma.6.253.17)

at Dvaravati, Naimisha, and likewise Badarikashrama — wherever sin is removed by purification, at Pundarika and Dandaka too,

Verse 19 (padma.6.253.19)

nārāyaṇācale saumye vārāhe vāmanāśrame evamādyāḥ svayaṁ vyaktāḥ sarvakāmaphalapradāḥ

gentle Narayanachala, Varaha-kshetra, Vamanashrama — at these and such places are self-manifest images, granting the fruit of every desire.

Verse 21 (padma.6.253.21)

svayameva hi sānnidhyaṁ yasminyāti janārdanaḥ tasminneva svayaṁ vyaṁktaṁ vadaṁti munayaḥ śubhāḥ

In whatever image Janardana himself grants his presence, that alone the good sages call "self-manifest."

Verse 22 (padma.6.253.22)

The best of great devotees, duly installing Keshava, through mantra causes his presence — this installation is held to be special.

Verse 23 (padma.6.253.23)

tasminsaṁpūjayeddevaṁ grāmeṣu ca gṛheṣu ca śālagrāmaśilāyāṁ tu gṛhārcā sadbhiriṣyate

In villages and in homes one should worship that god. In the Shalagrama stone alone is domestic worship deemed fitting by the good.

Verse 24 (padma.6.253.24)

tadīyārādhanaṁ ca syānnavadhā bhidyate śubhe tattatkarmavidhānaṁ ca viprasya satataṁ smṛtam

and the worship of things connected with him — O auspicious one, this is ninefold devotion. The rite for each of these acts is ever declared for the Brahmin.

Verse 26 (padma.6.253.26)

mahābhāgavataḥ śreṣṭho brāhmaṇo vai gururnṛṇām sarveṣāmevalokānāmasau pūjyo yathā hariḥ

Verse 106 (padma.6.253.106)

pitṛbhyaścāpi taddadyātsarvamānaṁtyamāpnuyāt prāṇināṁ pīḍanaṁ yattadviduṣāṁ nirayāya vai

Duly offering it to Hari, one should offer the oblation to the gods; one should give the same to the ancestors too — thus one obtains endless merit.

Verse 107 (padma.6.253.107)

whoever eats these goes to hell, becoming an eater of pus and blood. By setting these up, touching them, dwelling with them, and the like, men too —

Verse 113 (padma.6.253.113)

tepiyāntyeva nirayaṁ viṇmūtrakṛmibhojanam patitānāṁ ca saṁsargātpākhaṁḍānāṁ tathaiva ca

attain that same hell where they must eat filth, urine, and worms. From the company of outcasts and heretics too, it is likewise.

Verse 114 (padma.6.253.114)

sarvayajñasyabhoktāraṁ purāṇaṁ puruṣottamam jñātvā sarvaṁ prakurvīta nityanaimittikāḥ kriyāḥ

Knowing him, the eternal Purushottama, who partakes of every sacrifice, one should perform all the daily and occasional rites.

Verse 115 (padma.6.253.115)

yakṣarākṣasabhūtāśca kūṣmāṇḍagaṇa bhairavāḥ nārccanīyāḥ sadā devi svargalokamabhīpsubhiḥ

O Goddess, those who desire the heavenly world should never worship yakshas, rakshasas, bhutas, the hosts of Kushmandas, and Bhairavas.

Verse 116 (padma.6.253.116)

yakṣarākṣasabhūtānāmarccanaṁ varjayeddvijaḥ paiśācatvamavāpnoti kalpakoṭiśatatrayam

The twice-born should abandon the worship of yakshas, rakshasas, and bhutas. One who does so attains the state of a pishacha for three hundred million aeons.

Verse 117 (padma.6.253.117)

tasmādrākṣasabhūtānāmarcanaṁ pratiṣidhyate kalpakoṭisahasrāṇi kalpakoṭiśatāni ca

Therefore the worship of rakshasas and bhutas is forbidden. Through the worship of hosts of yakshas and bhutas, for thousands of millions and hundreds of millions of aeons —

Verse 118 (padma.6.253.118)

rauravaṁ narakaṁ yāti yakṣabhūtagaṇārcanāt śaṁkhacakrādibhiścihnairanyaiḥ priyatamairhareḥ

one attains the Raurava hell. Devoid of the conch, discus, and other marks dear to Hari —

Verse 119 (padma.6.253.119)

rahitaḥ sarvadharmebhyaḥ pracyuto narakaṁ vrajet agamyāgamanāddhiṁsā paradravyāpahāraṇāt

fallen from all dharma, one goes to hell. From union with a forbidden woman, from violence, from stealing another's wealth —

Verse 120 (padma.6.253.120)

abhakṣyabhakṣaṇātsadyo narakaṁ samavāpnuyāt yastu pāṇigṛhītāṁ ca hitvā'nyāṁ yo striyaṁ vrajet

and from eating forbidden food, a man attains hell at once. He who forsakes his own wedded wife and goes to another woman —

Verse 121 (padma.6.253.121)

agamyāgamanaṁ taddhi sadyo narakakārakam patitānāṁ ca saṁsargātpākhaṁḍānāṁ tathaiva ca

that very union with a forbidden woman brings about hell at once. From the company of outcasts and heretics —

Verse 122 (padma.6.253.122)

vikarmasthānāṁ ca tathā yātyeva nirayaṁ naraḥ saṁsargiṇāṁ ca saṁsargaṁ tatsaṁsargamapi tyajet

and likewise from the company of those engaged in forbidden acts, a man goes to hell. The company of those who keep such company should also be avoided.

Verse 123 (padma.6.253.123)

vaiṣṇavaḥ kulamekaṁ tu varjayetpāpasaṁyutam ekāṁtī saṁtyajedgrāmaṁ mahāpātakamiśritam

The Vaishnava should abandon even a single family joined with sin. The Ekanti (single-minded devotee) should abandon even a village mixed with great sin.

Verse 124 (padma.6.253.124)

tathaiva paramekāntī taddeśamapi varjayet svakarmmajñānabhaktyādi sādhanaṁ vaiṣṇavaṁ smṛtam

Likewise, the supreme Ekanti should abandon even that land. One's own [prescribed] action, knowledge, and devotion — these alone are declared as the Vaishnava's means.

Verse 125 (padma.6.253.125)

harerājñānurūpeṇa karmajñānādi yaścaret sa ekāṁtī bhavedvipro vāsudevaparāyaṇaḥ

He who performs action, knowledge, and the rest in accordance with Hari's command — he alone is called the Ekanti, the Brahmin devoted to Vasudeva.

Verse 126 (padma.6.253.126)

akṛtyaṁ vaiṣṇavaḥ pāpabuddhyā samyakparityajet ekāṁtī saṁtyajecchāstraṁ dūṣaṇānmanasāpi ca

The Vaishnava should thoroughly abandon forbidden acts, regarding them as sinful. The Ekanti should mentally abandon even a scripture that has become corrupted.

Verse 127 (padma.6.253.127)

tathaiva paramaikāṁtī heyabuddhyā parityajet nityaṁ naimittikaṁ kāmyaṁ kṛtyaṁ tu trividhaṁ smṛtam

Likewise, the supreme Ekanti should abandon it, considering it base. Nitya, Naimittika, and Kamya — action is held to be of three kinds.

Verse 128 (padma.6.253.128)

jñānaṁ tathaivaloke'sminmunibhiḥ saṁprakīrtitam kṛtyākṛtyavivekaṁ ca paralokasya ciṁtanam

Likewise, in this world, knowledge too is declared by the sages to be threefold: discrimination of what is to be done and not done, contemplation of the world beyond,

Verse 129 (padma.6.253.129)

tatprāptisādhanaṁ viṣṇoḥ svarūpajñānameva ca bhaktiyukto bhavedbhakto navadhā sā prakīrtitā

and the knowledge of Vishnu's nature as the means to attain it. One endowed with devotion is called a devotee; that devotion is declared to be ninefold.

Verse 130 (padma.6.253.130)

sudarśanorddhvapuṁḍrādi taccihnairaṁkanaṁ śubham sadguromaṁtrapaṭhanamarcanaṁ vidhinā hareḥ

The Sudarshana discus, the urdhva-pundra and the rest, marking oneself with his auspicious emblems, receiving the mantra from a true guru, duly worshipping Hari,

Verse 131 (padma.6.253.131)

smaraṇaṁ kīrtanaṁ viṣṇoḥ sevā ca paramātmanaḥ praṇāmastasya puratastadīyānāṁ ca pūjanam

remembering Vishnu, chanting his praise, and serving the Supreme Soul, prostrating before him, and worshipping those connected with him,

Verse 132 (padma.6.253.132)

prasādatīrthasevā ca bhaktirnavavidhā smṛtā yasmātprapadyate devaṁ śaraṇaṁ vaiṣṇavo harim

and service to his consecrated offerings and sacred places — this is the ninefold devotion. That by which the Vaishnava takes refuge in Hari, the god —

Verse 133 (padma.6.253.133)

prapattiḥ sā tu vijñeyā trividhā saṁprakīrtitā tāmasī rājasī caiva sātvikī trividhā smṛtā

should be known as "Prapatti," declared to be threefold — tamasic, rajasic, and sattvic — thus held to be of three kinds.

Verse 134 (padma.6.253.134)

sāpi tridhākṛtā siddhiḥ sāmānyā sarvadehinām etaccatuṣṭayaṁ devi heyaṁ saṁtyajya vaiṣṇavaḥ

That accomplishment too is divided into three kinds, common to all embodied beings. O Goddess, the Vaishnava, abandoning what is to be forsaken among these four —

Verse 135 (padma.6.253.135)

upāyabhūtaṁ brahmaivamavalaṁbeta vaiṣṇavam upāyabhāvātsaṁtyajya karmajñānādikaṁ naraḥ

should rely solely on the Brahman as the means, that Vaishnava disposition. Abandoning action, knowledge, and the rest as [independent] means, a man —

Verse 136 (padma.6.253.136)

kurvīta bhagavatprītyai mahābhāgavatottamaḥ trikālamarcayedviṣṇuṁ bhaktyā vai puruṣottamam

should perform them only for the Lord's pleasure — such a one is the excellent great devotee. With devotion, at all three times of day, one should worship Purushottama Vishnu.

Verse 137 (padma.6.253.137)

naimittike viśeṣeṇa pūjayedvidhinā śubhe pratyahaṁ kārtike māsi jātīpuṣpaiḥ samarcayet

O auspicious one, on occasional festival days, one should worship especially by rite. In the month of Kartika, one should worship daily with jasmine flowers,

Verse 138 (padma.6.253.138)

dadyādakhaṁḍaṁ dīpaṁ ca niyatātmā dṛḍhavrataḥ brāhmaṇānbhojayitvāṁte harisāyujyamāpnuyāt

keeping to the rule, of firm vow, one should keep an unbroken lamp burning. At the end, feeding Brahmins, one attains a form like Hari's own.

Verse 139 (padma.6.253.139)

O Goddess, with blue and white lotuses and oleander flowers one should worship. With incense, lamp, and food-offering one should offer according to one's ability.

Verse 141 (padma.6.253.141)

aśvamedhasahasrasya phalamāpnotyasaṁśayam tapo māsyudite bhānau snātvā nadyāṁ viśeṣataḥ

When the month ends, one should feed the excellent great devotee Brahmins, whereby, without doubt, the fruit of a thousand Ashvamedha sacrifices is obtained.

Verse 142 (padma.6.253.142)

arccayenmādhavaṁ puṣpairutpalaiśca śubhānane pāyasaṁ saghṛtaṁ divyaṁ bhaktyā tatra nivedayet

In the month of Pausha, at sunrise, bathing, and especially bathing in a river —

Verse 143 (padma.6.253.143)

Bathing, one should worship Vishnu continuously for a month. With sugared water, one should daily offer service to his garden.

Verse 145 (padma.6.253.145)

amāyāṁ maṁdavāre ca vaiṣṇavarkṣe tathaiva ca ravisaṁkrame vyatīpāte grahaṇaṁ caṁdra sūryayoḥ

On the new-moon day, on Saturday, and likewise on the Vaishnava nakshatra, at the solar solstice, at Vyatipata, at an eclipse of the moon or sun —

Verse 160 (padma.6.253.160)

kulakoṭiṁ samudhṛtya vaiṣṇavaṁ padamāpnuyāt sarvavedairaśaktaścedyaṣṭuṁ bhāgavatottamam

Verse 164 (padma.6.253.164)

The best of the twice-born, bathing here duly according to ability, washing the feet with devotion in a fine, delightful vessel —

Verse 169 (padma.6.253.169)

arcayedgaṁdhapuṣpādyairvastrairābharaṇādibhiḥ tāṁbūlena phalairvāpi yathāśaktyā samarcayet

should worship with fragrance, flowers, and the rest, with garments and ornaments. With betel and fruits too, one should duly worship according to ability.

Verse 170 (padma.6.253.170)

bhojayitvānnapānādyaiḥ praṇamya ca punaḥpunaḥ āsīmāṁtamanuvrajya namaskṛtya visarjitam

Feeding him with food and drink, prostrating again and again, accompanying him to the edge of the village, bowing, one should bid him farewell.

Verse 171 (padma.6.253.171)

punaḥ praṇamya bhaktyātha śanaistatra nivarttitaḥ gṛhaṁ praviśya deveśaṁ pūjayetprayatātmavān

Bowing again with devotion, returning slowly from there, entering the house, being of restrained self, one should worship the Lord of gods.

Verse 172 (padma.6.253.172)

evamabhyarcayedviṣṇuṁ yāvajjīvamataṁdritaḥ tadīyāṁśca viśeṣeṇa pūjayetsarvadā śubhe

Thus, throughout life, without laziness, one should worship Vishnu. O auspicious one, one should also always worship, with special care, those connected with him.

Verse 173 (padma.6.253.173)

ārādhanānāṁ sarveṣāṁ viṣṇorārādhanaṁ param tasmātparataraṁ devi tadīyānāṁ samarcanam

Of all forms of worship, the worship of Vishnu is supreme; O Goddess, even greater than that is the worship of those connected with him.

Verse 174 (padma.6.253.174)

One who, having worshipped Govinda, does not then worship those connected with him, is not to be known as a devotee — he is deemed merely a hypocrite.

Verse 175 (padma.6.253.175)

pumāṁstasmātprayatnena vaiṣṇavānpūjayetsadā sarvaṁ tarati duḥkhaughaṁ mahābhāgavatārcanāt

Therefore a man should ever diligently worship the Vaishnavas. Through the worship of the great devotee, a man crosses over the entire flood of sorrows.

Verse 176 (padma.6.253.176)

evamuktaṁ mayā devi viṣṇorārādhanaṁ param nityanaimittikaṁ caiva tadīyānāṁ ca pūjanam

O Goddess, thus I have told the supreme worship of Vishnu, the daily and occasional worship, and also the worship of those connected with him.

Verse 177 (padma.6.253.177)

pauruṣaṁ tasya yāthātmyaṁ phalasādhanameva ca tasyāvasathadehaṁ ca karmādyapi catuṣṭayam tava proktaṁ mayā devi kimanyacchrotumicchasi

His form as the cosmic Person, his true nature, and the means of attaining the fruit — and also his abode, his body, and his acts — these four too, O Goddess, I have told you. What else do you wish to hear?
