Verse 1 (padma.6.254.1)

वसिष्ठ उवाच- एवमुक्ता तु सा देवि पतिना शूलपाणिना । प्रणिपत्य महात्मानमुवाच प्रांजलिस्तदा ।

vasiṣṭha uvāca evamuktā tu sā devi patinā śūlapāṇinā praṇipatya mahātmānamuvāca prāṁjalistadā

Vasishtha said: Thus addressed by her husband, the trident-bearing one, that goddess, bowing to that great soul, then spoke with joined palms.

Verse 2 (padma.6.254.2)

पार्वत्युवाच- साधूक्तं हि त्वया नाथ वैष्णवं धर्ममुत्तमम् । गुह्याद्गुह्यतमं विष्णोः स्वरूपं परमात्मनः ।

pārvatyuvāca sādhūktaṁ hi tvayā nātha vaiṣṇavaṁ dharmamuttamam guhyādguhyatamaṁ viṣṇoḥ svarūpaṁ paramātmanaḥ

Parvati said: Well have you spoken, O Lord, of the excellent Vaishnava dharma — the most secret of secrets, the nature of Vishnu, the Supreme Soul.

Verse 3 (padma.6.254.3)

धन्यास्मि कृतकृत्यास्मि सर्वदेवनमस्कृत । तव प्रसादाद्देवेशमर्चयामि सनातनम् ।

dhanyāsmi kṛtakṛtyāsmi sarvadevanamaskṛta tava prasādāddeveśamarcayāmi sanātanam

I am blessed, my purpose is accomplished, O you who are bowed to by all the gods. By your grace I shall worship the eternal Lord of gods.

Verse 4 (padma.6.254.4)

वसिष्ठउवाच- ततस्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा स भवस्त्रिपुरांतकः । समाश्लिष्यावदद्देवीं प्रहृष्टेनांतरात्मनाः ।

vasiṣṭhauvāca tatastadvacanaṁ śrutvā sa bhavastripurāṁtakaḥ samāśliṣyāvadaddevīṁ prahṛṣṭenāṁtarātmanāḥ

Vasishtha said: Then, hearing those words, Bhava, the destroyer of the Triple City, embracing the goddess, spoke, his inner self overjoyed.

Verse 5 (padma.6.254.5)

रुद्र उवाच- साधुसाधु महादेवि साधुसाधु वरानने । अर्चयस्व हृषीकेशं लक्ष्मीभर्त्तारमच्युतम् ।

rudra uvāca sādhusādhu mahādevi sādhusādhu varānane arcayasva hṛṣīkeśaṁ lakṣmībharttāramacyutam

Rudra said: Well said, well said, O great Goddess! Well said, well said, O beautiful-faced one! Worship Hrishikesha, the unfailing husband of Lakshmi.

Verse 6 (padma.6.254.6)

कृतकृत्योऽस्म्यहं भद्रे वैष्णव्या भार्यया त्वया । गुरुणा तव चार्वंगि वामदेवेन धीमता ।

kṛtakṛtyo'smyahaṁ bhadre vaiṣṇavyā bhāryayā tvayā guruṇā tava cārvaṁgi vāmadevena dhīmatā

My purpose is accomplished, O gracious one, through you, my Vaishnavi wife; and, O lovely-limbed one, through your wise teacher Vamadeva.

Verse 7 (padma.6.254.7)

अनुज्ञातार्चयस्वेशं पुराणं पुरुषोत्तमम् । गुरूपदेशमार्गेण पूजयित्वैव केशवम् । प्राप्नोति वाछितं सर्वं नान्यथा भूधरात्मजे ।

anujñātārcayasveśaṁ purāṇaṁ puruṣottamam gurūpadeśamārgeṇa pūjayitvaiva keśavam prāpnoti vāchitaṁ sarvaṁ nānyathā bhūdharātmaje

Permitted, worship the ancient Purushottama, the Lord. Only by worshipping Keshava through the path of the guru's instruction does one obtain all one desires — never otherwise, O daughter of the mountain.

Verse 8 (padma.6.254.8)

वसिष्ठ उवाच- एवमुक्ता तदा देवि वामदेवांतिकं नृप । जगाम सहसा हृष्टा विष्णुपूजनलालसा ।

vasiṣṭha uvāca evamuktā tadā devi vāmadevāṁtikaṁ nṛpa jagāma sahasā hṛṣṭā viṣṇupūjanalālasā

Vasishtha said: Thus addressed, O king, that goddess then went at once to Vamadeva's presence, joyful, eager for the worship of Vishnu.

Verse 9 (padma.6.254.9)

समेत्य तं गुरुं देवि पूजयित्वा प्रणम्य च । विनीता प्रांजलिर्भूत्वा उवाच मुनिसत्तमम् ।

sametya taṁ guruṁ devi pūjayitvā praṇamya ca vinītā prāṁjalirbhūtvā uvāca munisattamam

Meeting that teacher, worshipping and bowing to him, humbly, with joined palms, she spoke to that foremost of sages.

Verse 10 (padma.6.254.10)

पार्वत्युवाच- भगवंस्त्वत्प्रसादेन सम्यगाराधनं हरेः । करिष्यामि द्विजश्रेष्ठ त्वमनुज्ञातुमर्हसि ।

pārvatyuvāca bhagavaṁstvatprasādena samyagārādhanaṁ hareḥ kariṣyāmi dvijaśreṣṭha tvamanujñātumarhasi

Parvati said: O Lord, by your grace I shall perform the proper worship of Hari; O foremost of the twice-born, you should grant me permission.

Verse 11 (padma.6.254.11)

वसिष्ठ उवाच- इत्युक्तस्तु तया देव्या वामदेवो महामुनिः । तस्यै मंत्रवरं श्रेष्ठं ददौ स विधिना गुरुः ।

vasiṣṭha uvāca ityuktastu tayā devyā vāmadevo mahāmuniḥ tasyai maṁtravaraṁ śreṣṭhaṁ dadau sa vidhinā guruḥ

Vasishtha said: Thus addressed by that goddess, the great sage Vamadeva, that teacher, duly gave her the best of mantras.

Verse 12 (padma.6.254.12)

नाम्नां सहस्रं विष्णोश्च प्रोक्तवान्मुनिसत्तमः । निवेदयित्वा पूजाया विधानमपि देशिकः । उवाच परमप्रीत्या पार्वतीं संशितव्रताम् ।

nāmnāṁ sahasraṁ viṣṇośca proktavānmunisattamaḥ nivedayitvā pūjāyā vidhānamapi deśikaḥ uvāca paramaprītyā pārvatīṁ saṁśitavratām

That foremost of sages recited to her the thousand names of Vishnu; and, having imparted also the manner of worship, that teacher spoke with the greatest affection to Parvati, of strict vows.

Verse 13 (padma.6.254.13)

वामदेव उवाच- अर्चयित्वा हृषीकेशं प्रातर्नित्यं वरानने । सहस्रनामपठनं कुरुष्व तदनंतरम् ।

vāmadeva uvāca arcayitvā hṛṣīkeśaṁ prātarnityaṁ varānane sahasranāmapaṭhanaṁ kuruṣva tadanaṁtaram

Vamadeva said: Having worshipped Hrishikesha each morning, O beautiful-faced one, thereafter recite the thousand names.

Verse 14 (padma.6.254.14)

वसिष्ठ उवाच- द्वत्युक्ता तेन गुरुणा प्रहृष्टेनांतरात्मना । पूजयित्वा नमस्कृत्य पुनरायात्स्वमालयम् ।

vasiṣṭha uvāca dvatyuktā tena guruṇā prahṛṣṭenāṁtarātmanā pūjayitvā namaskṛtya punarāyātsvamālayam

Vasishtha said: Thus addressed by that teacher, her inner self overjoyed, worshipping and bowing, she returned again to her own abode.

Verse 15 (padma.6.254.15)

शिक्षिता गुरुणा तेन वामदेवेन पार्वती । ततः कतिपयाहस्तु द्वादश्यां वृषभध्वजः ।

śikṣitā guruṇā tena vāmadevena pārvatī tataḥ katipayāhastu dvādaśyāṁ vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ

Instructed by that teacher Vamadeva, Parvati began her practice. Then, after some days, on a Dvadashi, the bull-bannered Shiva —

Verse 16 (padma.6.254.16)

कैलासशिखरे रम्ये विष्णुमाराध्य शंकरः । उपविष्टस्ततो भोक्तुं पार्वतीं शंकरोऽब्रवीत् ।

kailāsaśikhare ramye viṣṇumārādhya śaṁkaraḥ upaviṣṭastato bhoktuṁ pārvatīṁ śaṁkaro'bravīt

on the delightful peak of Kailasa, having worshipped Vishnu, seated to eat, spoke to Parvati.

Verse 17 (padma.6.254.17)

शंकर उवाच- पार्वत्ये हिमया सार्द्धं भोक्तुं भुवनवंदिते । वसिष्ठ उवाच- तमाह पार्वती देवी जप्त्वा नामसहस्रकम् ।

śaṁkara uvāca pārvatye himayā sārddhaṁ bhoktuṁ bhuvanavaṁdite vasiṣṭha uvāca tamāha pārvatī devī japtvā nāmasahasrakam

Shankara said: "O Parvati, O daughter of the Himalaya, worshipped by all the worlds, eat now, together with me." Vasishtha said: Parvati said to him, "Once I have recited the thousand names —

Verse 18 (padma.6.254.18)

ततो भोक्ष्याम्यहं देव भुज्यतां भवता प्रभो । ततस्तां पार्वतीं प्राह प्रहसन्परमेश्वरः ।

tato bhokṣyāmyahaṁ deva bhujyatāṁ bhavatā prabho tatastāṁ pārvatīṁ prāha prahasanparameśvaraḥ

then I shall eat, my Lord; you, O God, please eat now."' Then the Supreme Lord, smiling, said to Parvati.

Verse 19 (padma.6.254.19)

शंकर उवाच- धन्यासि कृतकृत्यासि विष्णुभक्तासि पार्वति । दुर्लभा वैष्णवी भक्तिर्भागधेयं विनेश्वरि ।

śaṁkara uvāca dhanyāsi kṛtakṛtyāsi viṣṇubhaktāsi pārvati durlabhā vaiṣṇavī bhaktirbhāgadheyaṁ vineśvari

Shankara said: "You are blessed, your purpose is accomplished, you are a devotee of Vishnu, O Parvati. Devotion to Vishnu is hard to attain without good fortune, O Goddess.

Verse 20 (padma.6.254.20)

रामरामेति रामेति रमे रामे मनोरमे । सहस्रनामतत्तुल्यं रामनाम वरानने ।

rāmarāmeti rāmeti rame rāme manorame sahasranāmatattulyaṁ rāmanāma varānane

'Rama, Rama,' thus, 'Rama' — I delight in Rama, the delighter of the mind. O beautiful-faced one, the name Rama is equal to those thousand names.

Verse 21 (padma.6.254.21)

रकारादीनि नामानि शृण्वतो मम पार्वति । मनः प्रसन्नतां याति रामनामाभिशंकया ।

rakārādīni nāmāni śṛṇvato mama pārvati manaḥ prasannatāṁ yāti rāmanāmābhiśaṁkayā

O Parvati, as I hear these names beginning with the syllable 'Ra,' my mind attains gladness, in the mere echo of Rama's name.

Verse 22 (padma.6.254.22)

रामेत्युक्त्वा महादेवि भुंक्ष्व सार्धं मयाधुना । वसिष्ठ उवाच- ततो रामेति नामोक्त्वा सह भुंक्त्वाऽथ पार्वती ।

rāmetyuktvā mahādevi bhuṁkṣva sārdhaṁ mayādhunā vasiṣṭha uvāca tato rāmeti nāmoktvā saha bhuṁktvā'tha pārvatī

Saying 'Rama,' O great Goddess, eat now together with me." Vasishtha said: Then, having uttered the name 'Rama,' Parvati ate together with him.

Verse 23 (padma.6.254.23)

रामेत्युक्ता महादेवी शंभुना सह संस्थिता । पप्रच्छ शंकरं देवं प्रीतिप्रणवमानसा ।

rāmetyuktā mahādevī śaṁbhunā saha saṁsthitā papraccha śaṁkaraṁ devaṁ prītipraṇavamānasā

The great Goddess, addressed as 'Rama,' seated together with Shambhu, asked the god Shankara, her mind bowed in love.

Verse 24 (padma.6.254.24)

पार्वत्युवाच- सहस्रनामभिस्तुल्यं रामनाम त्वयोदितम् । तस्यापराणि नामानि संति चेद्रावणद्विषः । कथ्यतां मम देवेश तत्र मे भक्तिरुत्थिता ।

pārvatyuvāca sahasranāmabhistulyaṁ rāmanāma tvayoditam tasyāparāṇi nāmāni saṁti cedrāvaṇadviṣaḥ kathyatāṁ mama deveśa tatra me bhaktirutthitā

Parvati said: You have declared the name Rama to be equal to the thousand names. If there are other names of that enemy of Ravana, tell them to me, O Lord of gods — my devotion has arisen for them.

Verse 25 (padma.6.254.25)

श्रीमहादेव उवाच- शृणु नामानि वक्ष्यामि रामचंद्रस्य पार्वति । लौकिका वैदिकाः शब्दाः ये केचित्संति पार्वति ।

śrīmahādeva uvāca śṛṇu nāmāni vakṣyāmi rāmacaṁdrasya pārvati laukikā vaidikāḥ śabdāḥ ye kecitsaṁti pārvati

Shri Mahadeva said: Listen, O Parvati, I shall tell the names of Ramachandra. Whatever worldly or Vedic words there are, O Parvati —

Verse 26 (padma.6.254.26)

नामानि रामचंद्रस्य सहस्रं तेषु चाधिकम् । तेषु चात्यंतमुख्यं हि नाम्नामष्टोत्तरं शतम् ।

nāmāni rāmacaṁdrasya sahasraṁ teṣu cādhikam teṣu cātyaṁtamukhyaṁ hi nāmnāmaṣṭottaraṁ śatam

the names of Ramachandra among them number more than a thousand. Among these, the most essential are the hundred and eight names.

Verse 27 (padma.6.254.27)

विष्णोरेकैकनामैव सर्ववेदाधिकं मतम् । तादृङ्नामसहस्राणि रामनामसमानि च ।

viṣṇorekaikanāmaiva sarvavedādhikaṁ matam tādṛṅnāmasahasrāṇi rāmanāmasamāni ca

Each single name of Vishnu is held to surpass all the Vedas; and a thousand such names are equal to the name Rama.

Verse 28 (padma.6.254.28)

यत्फलं सर्ववेदानां मंत्राणां जपतः प्रिये । तत्फलं कोटिगुणितं रामनाम्नैव लभ्यते ।

yatphalaṁ sarvavedānāṁ maṁtrāṇāṁ japataḥ priye tatphalaṁ koṭiguṇitaṁ rāmanāmnaiva labhyate

Whatever fruit is obtained, O beloved, by one reciting the mantras of all the Vedas — that fruit, multiplied a hundred million times, is obtained through the name Rama alone.

Verse 29 (padma.6.254.29)

नामानि शृणु रामस्य मुख्यानि शुभदर्शने । ऋषिभिः परिगीतानि तानि वक्ष्यामि ते प्रिये ।

nāmāni śṛṇu rāmasya mukhyāni śubhadarśane ṛṣibhiḥ parigītāni tāni vakṣyāmi te priye

Hear the essential names of Rama, O one of auspicious sight, sung by the sages — I shall tell them to you, my beloved.

Verse 30 (padma.6.254.30)

ॐ श्रीरामो रामचंद्रश्च रामभद्रश्च शाश्वतः । राजीवलोचनः श्रीमान्राजेंद्रो रघुपुंगवः ।

oṁ śrīrāmo rāmacaṁdraśca rāmabhadraśca śāśvataḥ rājīvalocanaḥ śrīmānrājeṁdro raghupuṁgavaḥ

Om. Shri Rama, and Ramachandra, and Ramabhadra, the eternal one; the lotus-eyed, the glorious, the king of kings, the foremost of the Raghus;

Verse 31 (padma.6.254.31)

जानकीवल्लभो जैत्रो जितामित्रो जनार्दनः । विश्वामित्रप्रियो दांतः शरण्य त्राणतत्परः ।

jānakīvallabho jaitro jitāmitro janārdanaḥ viśvāmitrapriyo dāṁtaḥ śaraṇya trāṇatatparaḥ

the beloved of Janaki, the ever-triumphant, the conqueror of enemies, Janardana; the beloved of Vishvamitra, the self-controlled, the refuge, ever intent on protecting;

Verse 32 (padma.6.254.32)

वालिप्रमथनो वाग्मी सत्यवाक्सत्यविक्रमः । सत्यव्रतो व्रतफलः सदा हनुमदाश्रयः ।

vālipramathano vāgmī satyavāksatyavikramaḥ satyavrato vrataphalaḥ sadā hanumadāśrayaḥ

the slayer of Vali, the eloquent, of truthful speech and true valor; of true vows, the fruit of vows, ever the refuge of Hanuman;

Verse 33 (padma.6.254.33)

कौशलेयः खरध्वंसी विराधवधपंडितः । विभीषणपरित्राता दशग्रीवशिरोहरः ।

kauśaleyaḥ kharadhvaṁsī virādhavadhapaṁḍitaḥ vibhīṣaṇaparitrātā daśagrīvaśiroharaḥ

the son of Kaushalya, the destroyer of Khara, skilled in the slaying of Viradha; the protector of Vibhishana, the remover of Ravana's ten heads;

Verse 34 (padma.6.254.34)

सप्ततालप्रभेत्ता च हरकोदंड खंडनः । जामदग्नि महादर्प्पदलनस्ताडकांतकृत् ।

saptatālaprabhettā ca harakodaṁḍa khaṁḍanaḥ jāmadagni mahādarppadalanastāḍakāṁtakṛt

the piercer of the seven sala trees, the breaker of Shiva's bow; the crusher of the great pride of Jamadagnya, the slayer of Tataka;

Verse 35 (padma.6.254.35)

वेदांतपारो वेदात्मा भवबंधैकभेषजम् । दूषणत्रिशिरोरिश्च त्रिमूर्त्तिस्त्रिगुणस्त्रयी ।

vedāṁtapāro vedātmā bhavabaṁdhaikabheṣajam dūṣaṇatriśiroriśca trimūrttistriguṇastrayī

the one who has crossed to the far shore of Vedanta, whose self is the Veda, the sole remedy for the bondage of worldly existence; the enemy of Dushana and Trishira, the threefold form, the three gunas, the triple Veda;

Verse 36 (padma.6.254.36)

त्रिविक्रमस्त्रिलोकात्मा पुण्यचारित्रकीर्त्तनः । त्रिलोकरक्षको धन्वी दंडकारण्यवासकृत् ।

trivikramastrilokātmā puṇyacāritrakīrttanaḥ trilokarakṣako dhanvī daṁḍakāraṇyavāsakṛt

Trivikrama, whose self is the three worlds, whose story is chanted as sacred; the protector of the three worlds, the bow-bearer, the dweller of the Dandaka forest;

Verse 37 (padma.6.254.37)

अहल्यापावनश्चैव पितृभक्तो वरप्रदः । जितेंद्रियो जितक्रोधो जितलोभो जगद्गुरुः ।

ahalyāpāvanaścaiva pitṛbhakto varapradaḥ jiteṁdriyo jitakrodho jitalobho jagadguruḥ

the purifier of Ahalya, devoted to his father, the bestower of boons; master of his senses, master of anger, master of greed, the teacher of the world;

Verse 38 (padma.6.254.38)

ऋक्षवानरसंघाती चित्रकूटसमाश्रयः । जयंतत्राणवरदः सुमित्रापुत्रसेवितः ।

ṛkṣavānarasaṁghātī citrakūṭasamāśrayaḥ jayaṁtatrāṇavaradaḥ sumitrāputrasevitaḥ

the ally of the bears and monkeys, who dwelt at Chitrakuta; the protector and boon-giver of Jayanta, served by Sumitra's son;

Verse 39 (padma.6.254.39)

सर्वदेवाधिदेवश्च मृतवानरजीवनः । मायामारीचहंता च महाभागो महाभुजः ।

sarvadevādhidevaśca mṛtavānarajīvanaḥ māyāmārīcahaṁtā ca mahābhāgo mahābhujaḥ

the god of gods over all the gods, the reviver of the dead monkeys; the slayer of the illusion-wielding Maricha, the illustrious, mighty-armed one;

Verse 40 (padma.6.254.40)

सर्वदेवस्तुतः सौम्यो ब्रह्मण्यो मुनिसत्तमः । महायोगी महोदारः सुग्रीवस्थिरराज्यदः ।

sarvadevastutaḥ saumyo brahmaṇyo munisattamaḥ mahāyogī mahodāraḥ sugrīvasthirarājyadaḥ

praised by all the gods, the gentle, the friend of Brahmins, the foremost of sages; the great yogi, the most generous, the giver of a stable kingdom to Sugriva;

Verse 41 (padma.6.254.41)

सर्वपुण्याधिकफलः स्मृतः सर्वाघनाशनः । आदिपुरुषो महापुरुषः परमः पुरुषस्तथा ।

sarvapuṇyādhikaphalaḥ smṛtaḥ sarvāghanāśanaḥ ādipuruṣo mahāpuruṣaḥ paramaḥ puruṣastathā

remembered as bestowing fruit greater than all merit, the destroyer of every sin; the primeval Person, the great Person, and likewise the Supreme Person;

Verse 42 (padma.6.254.42)

पुण्योदयो महासारः पुराणपुरुषोत्तमः । स्मितवक्त्रो मितभाषी पूर्वभाषी च राघवः ।

puṇyodayo mahāsāraḥ purāṇapuruṣottamaḥ smitavaktro mitabhāṣī pūrvabhāṣī ca rāghavaḥ

the dawning of merit, of great essence, the ancient Purushottama; the smiling-faced, the measured-spoken, and Raghava who speaks first;

Verse 43 (padma.6.254.43)

अनंतगुणगंभीरो धीरो दांतगुणोत्तरः । मायामानुषचारित्रो महादेवाधिपूजितः ।

anaṁtaguṇagaṁbhīro dhīro dāṁtaguṇottaraḥ māyāmānuṣacāritro mahādevādhipūjitaḥ

profound with infinite qualities, steadfast, foremost in the qualities of self-restraint; whose conduct as a human was mere illusion, worshipped by the great god himself;

Verse 44 (padma.6.254.44)

सेतुकृज्जितवारीशः सर्वतीर्थमयो हरिः । श्यामांगः सुंदरः शूरः पीतवासा धनुर्द्धरः ।

setukṛjjitavārīśaḥ sarvatīrthamayo hariḥ śyāmāṁgaḥ suṁdaraḥ śūraḥ pītavāsā dhanurddharaḥ

the builder of the bridge, the conqueror of the lord of the ocean, Hari who is the essence of all sacred fords; dark-limbed, beautiful, heroic, clad in yellow, the bow-bearer;

Verse 45 (padma.6.254.45)

सर्वयज्ञाधिपो यज्ञो जरामरणवर्जितः । शिवलिंगप्रतिष्ठाता सर्वाद्यगुणवर्जितः ।

sarvayajñādhipo yajño jarāmaraṇavarjitaḥ śivaliṁgapratiṣṭhātā sarvādyaguṇavarjitaḥ

the lord of all sacrifices, the sacrifice itself, free of old age and death; the installer of the Shiva-linga, free of the primordial gunas;

Verse 46 (padma.6.254.46)

परमात्मा परब्रह्म सच्चिदानंदविग्रहः । परंज्योतिः परंधाम पराकाशः परात्परः ।

paramātmā parabrahma saccidānaṁdavigrahaḥ paraṁjyotiḥ paraṁdhāma parākāśaḥ parātparaḥ

the Supreme Soul, the Supreme Brahman, whose form is being-consciousness-bliss; the supreme light, the supreme abode, the supreme space, higher than the highest;

Verse 47 (padma.6.254.47)

परेशः पारगः पारः सर्वभूतात्मकः शिवः । इति श्रीरामचन्द्रस्य नाम्नामष्टोत्तरं शतम् ।

pareśaḥ pāragaḥ pāraḥ sarvabhūtātmakaḥ śivaḥ iti śrīrāmacandrasya nāmnāmaṣṭottaraṁ śatam

the supreme Lord, the one who has crossed over, the far shore itself, the self of all beings, the auspicious one. Thus are the hundred and eight names of Shri Ramachandra.

Verse 48 (padma.6.254.48)

गुह्याद्गुह्यतरं देवि तव स्नेहात्प्रकीर्तितम् । यः पठेच्छृणुयाद्वापि भक्तियुक्तेन चेतसा ।

guhyādguhyataraṁ devi tava snehātprakīrtitam yaḥ paṭhecchṛṇuyādvāpi bhaktiyuktena cetasā

O Goddess, more secret than secret, they have been declared out of love for you. Whoever recites them, or hears them, with a heart full of devotion,

Verse 49 (padma.6.254.49)

सर्वैः प्रमुच्यते पापैः कल्पकोटिशतोद्भवैः । जलानि स्थलतां यांति शत्रवो यांति मित्रताम् ।

sarvaiḥ pramucyate pāpaiḥ kalpakoṭiśatodbhavaiḥ jalāni sthalatāṁ yāṁti śatravo yāṁti mitratām

is freed from all sins accumulated over hundreds of millions of aeons. Waters become dry land, enemies become friends,

Verse 50 (padma.6.254.50)

राजानो दासतां यांति वह्नयो यांति सौम्यताम् । आनुकूल्यं च भूतानि स्थैर्यं यांति चलाः श्रियः । अनुग्रहं ग्रहा यांति शांतिमायांत्युपद्रवाः । पठतो भक्तिभावेन नरस्य गिरिसंभवे ।

rājāno dāsatāṁ yāṁti vahnayo yāṁti saumyatām ānukūlyaṁ ca bhūtāni sthairyaṁ yāṁti calāḥ śriyaḥ anugrahaṁ grahā yāṁti śāṁtimāyāṁtyupadravāḥ paṭhato bhaktibhāvena narasya girisaṁbhave

kings become as servants, fires become gentle, creatures become favorable, fickle fortune becomes steady, planets become gracious, calamities become peace — for the man who recites with devotion, O daughter of the mountain.

Verse 51 (padma.6.254.51)

पठेत्परमया भक्त्या तस्य वश्यं जगत्त्रयम् । यंयं कामं प्रकुरुते तंतमाप्नोति कीर्त्तनात् ।

paṭhetparamayā bhaktyā tasya vaśyaṁ jagattrayam yaṁyaṁ kāmaṁ prakurute taṁtamāpnoti kīrttanāt

If one recites with supreme devotion, the three worlds become subject to him. Whatever desire he holds, he attains it through this chanting.

Verse 52 (padma.6.254.52)

कल्पकोटिसहस्राणि कल्पकोटिशतानि च । वैकुंठे मोदते नित्यं दशपूर्वैर्दशापरैः ।

kalpakoṭisahasrāṇi kalpakoṭiśatāni ca vaikuṁṭhe modate nityaṁ daśapūrvairdaśāparaiḥ

For thousands of millions and hundreds of millions of aeons, he rejoices eternally in Vaikuntha, together with ten generations before and ten after.

Verse 53 (padma.6.254.53)

रामं दूर्वादलश्यामं पद्माक्षं पीतवाससम् । स्तुवंति नामभिर्द्दिव्यैर्न ते संसारिणो जनाः ।

rāmaṁ dūrvādalaśyāmaṁ padmākṣaṁ pītavāsasam stuvaṁti nāmabhirddivyairna te saṁsāriṇo janāḥ

Those who praise Rama, dark as a durva-blade, lotus-eyed, clad in yellow, with these divine names — such people are no longer bound to worldly existence.

Verse 54 (padma.6.254.54)

रामाय रामभद्राय रामचंद्राय वेधसे । रघुनाथाय नाथाय सीतायाः पतये नमः ।

rāmāya rāmabhadrāya rāmacaṁdrāya vedhase raghunāthāya nāthāya sītāyāḥ pataye namaḥ

"Homage to Rama, to Ramabhadra, to Ramachandra, the creator; to Raghunatha, to the Lord, to the husband of Sita."

Verse 55 (padma.6.254.55)

इमं मंत्रं महादेवि जपन्नेव दिवानिशम् । सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो विष्णुसायुज्यमाप्नुयात् ।

imaṁ maṁtraṁ mahādevi japanneva divāniśam sarvapāpavinirmukto viṣṇusāyujyamāpnuyāt

Reciting this mantra, O great Goddess, day and night, one becomes freed from all sins, and attains union with Vishnu.

Verse 56 (padma.6.254.56)

इति ते रामचंद्रस्य माहात्म्यं वेदसंमितम् । कथितं वै मया सुभ्रूस्तव प्रीत्या शुभाह्वयम् ।

iti te rāmacaṁdrasya māhātmyaṁ vedasaṁmitam kathitaṁ vai mayā subhrūstava prītyā śubhāhvayam

Thus, this glory of Ramachandra, equal in worth to the Veda, has been told to you, O fair-browed one, by me, out of love for you, O auspiciously named one.

Verse 57 (padma.6.254.57)

वसिष्ठ उवाच- तच्छ्रत्वा शंकरेणोक्तं माहात्म्यं परमात्मनः । प्रहर्षमतुलं लेभे आनंदाश्रुजलाप्लुता ।

vasiṣṭha uvāca tacchratvā śaṁkareṇoktaṁ māhātmyaṁ paramātmanaḥ praharṣamatulaṁ lebhe ānaṁdāśrujalāplutā

Vasishtha said: Hearing that glory of the Supreme Soul spoken by Shankara, she attained incomparable joy, drenched in tears of bliss.

Verse 58 (padma.6.254.58)

प्रणम्य प्राह देवेशं भर्तारं वृषभध्वजम् । पार्वत्युवाच- अहो माहात्म्यमतुलं रामस्य परमात्मनः । श्रोत्रतृप्तिर्हि मे न स्यात्कल्पायुतशतैरपि ।

praṇamya prāha deveśaṁ bhartāraṁ vṛṣabhadhvajam pārvatyuvāca aho māhātmyamatulaṁ rāmasya paramātmanaḥ śrotratṛptirhi me na syātkalpāyutaśatairapi

Bowing, she spoke to that Lord of gods, her husband, the bull-bannered one. Parvati said: How incomparable is the glory of Rama, the Supreme Soul! My ears would never find satiety, even in hundreds of myriads of aeons.

Verse 59 (padma.6.254.59)

धन्याहं कृतकृत्यास्मि सर्वमुक्तं त्वयानघ । त्वत्प्रसादाद्धरेर्भक्तिर्जन्मजन्मनि चास्तु मे ।

dhanyāhaṁ kṛtakṛtyāsmi sarvamuktaṁ tvayānagha tvatprasādāddharerbhaktirjanmajanmani cāstu me

I am blessed, my purpose is accomplished, O sinless one, all has been told by you. By your grace, may I have devotion to Hari, birth after birth.

Verse 60 (padma.6.254.60)

वसिष्ठ उवाच- एवमुक्त्वा स्वभर्तारं गौरी भागवतोत्तमा । रामाय रामभद्राय रामचंद्राय वेधसे । रघुनाथाय नाथाय सीतायाः पतये नमः ।

vasiṣṭha uvāca evamuktvā svabhartāraṁ gaurī bhāgavatottamā rāmāya rāmabhadrāya rāmacaṁdrāya vedhase raghunāthāya nāthāya sītāyāḥ pataye namaḥ

Vasishtha said: Having said this to her own husband, Gauri, that foremost of devotees, began reciting: "Homage to Rama, to Ramabhadra, to Ramachandra, the creator; to Raghunatha, to the Lord, to the husband of Sita."

Verse 61 (padma.6.254.61)

इममेव जपन्मंत्रं सर्वावस्थासु पार्वती । उवास च सुखेनैव कैलासे पतिना सह ।

imameva japanmaṁtraṁ sarvāvasthāsu pārvatī uvāsa ca sukhenaiva kailāse patinā saha

Reciting this very mantra in every state, Parvati dwelt happily on Kailasa together with her husband.

Verse 62 (padma.6.254.62)

एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं गुह्याद्गुह्यतमं नृप । रुद्रप्रोक्तानि शास्त्राणि तामसान्येव पार्थिव ।

etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ guhyādguhyatamaṁ nṛpa rudraproktāni śāstrāṇi tāmasānyeva pārthiva

O king, all this most secret of secrets has been told to you. O king, the scriptures declared by Rudra earlier were indeed the Tamasic ones —

Verse 63 (padma.6.254.63)

संमोहनार्थं लोकानां प्रोक्तवान्वृषभध्वजः । रहसि प्रोक्तवान्देव्या इदमेकं हरः प्रभुः ।

saṁmohanārthaṁ lokānāṁ proktavānvṛṣabhadhvajaḥ rahasi proktavāndevyā idamekaṁ haraḥ prabhuḥ

spoken by the bull-bannered one for the deluding of the world. But this one teaching, Hara, that Lord, spoke in secret to the Goddess.

Verse 64 (padma.6.254.64)

यथार्थमर्थं गुह्यं च सारं मंत्रस्य भूपते । देव्या प्रीत्यै महादेवः कथयामास तत्परः ।

yathārthamarthaṁ guhyaṁ ca sāraṁ maṁtrasya bhūpate devyā prītyai mahādevaḥ kathayāmāsa tatparaḥ

The true meaning, the secret, and the essence of the mantra, O king, Mahadeva, intent upon it, related for the Goddess's pleasure.

Verse 65 (padma.6.254.65)

उमामहेश्वरं राजन्संवादमिममद्भुतम् । यः पठेच्छृणुयाद्वापि भक्तियुक्तेन चेतसा ।

umāmaheśvaraṁ rājansaṁvādamimamadbhutam yaḥ paṭhecchṛṇuyādvāpi bhaktiyuktena cetasā

O king, this wondrous dialogue of Uma and Maheshvara — whoever recites it, or hears it, with a heart full of devotion,

Verse 66 (padma.6.254.66)

स सर्ववंद्यः सर्वज्ञो महाभागवतो भवेत् । सर्वधर्मविनिर्मुक्तः प्राप्नोति परमं पदम् ।

sa sarvavaṁdyaḥ sarvajño mahābhāgavato bhavet sarvadharmavinirmuktaḥ prāpnoti paramaṁ padam

becomes worthy of homage by all, all-knowing, a great devotee. Freed from all worldly dharma, he attains the supreme abode.

Verse 67 (padma.6.254.67)

धन्यः खलु भवान्लोके पार्थिवेंद्र महाबल । त्वदन्वये हरिः श्रीमान्पुराणः पुरुषोत्तमः ।

dhanyaḥ khalu bhavānloke pārthiveṁdra mahābala tvadanvaye hariḥ śrīmānpurāṇaḥ puruṣottamaḥ

[Vasishtha, addressing King Dasharatha, concludes:] Blessed indeed are you in this world, O king of kings, O mighty one! In your lineage, the glorious Hari, the ancient Purushottama —

Verse 68 (padma.6.254.68)

उत्पत्स्यते दाशरथिः सर्वलोकहिताय वै । तस्मादिक्ष्वाकवः पूज्याः सुराणामपि पार्थिव ।

utpatsyate dāśarathiḥ sarvalokahitāya vai tasmādikṣvākavaḥ pūjyāḥ surāṇāmapi pārthiva

shall be born as the son of Dasharatha, for the welfare of all the worlds. Therefore, O king, the Ikshvakus are worthy of worship even by the gods,

येषां जातो हि भगवान्रामो राजीवलोचनः ।

yeṣāṁ jāto hi bhagavānrāmo rājīvalocanaḥ

in whose line the Lord Rama, lotus-eyed, shall indeed be born.
