Uttara Khanda · Chapter 34
The Legend of Trisprisha
Verse 1 (padma.6.34.1)
nārada uvāca trispṛśākhyaṁ vrataṁ brūhi sarveśvara viśeṣataḥ yacchrutvā mucyate lokaḥ karmabaṁdhanataḥ kṣaṇāt
Narada said: Tell me especially about the vow called Trisprisha, O Lord of all, hearing which the world is instantly freed from the bondage of karma.
Verse 2 (padma.6.34.2)
mahādeva uvāca sarvapāpaughaśamanaṁ mahāduḥkhavināśanam śṛṇu kṛṣṇāvatāraṁ tvaṁ trispṛśākhyaṁ mahāvratam
Mahadeva said: Listen — this great vow called Trisprisha is Krishna's own incarnation, which calms the whole mass of sin and destroys great sorrow.
Verse 3 (padma.6.34.3)
kāmadaṁ saspṛhāṇāṁ tu nispṛhāṇāṁ tu mokṣadam trispṛśākhyaṁ vrataṁ vipra śṛṇuṣva gadato mama
It grants desires to the desirous, and liberation to the desireless. O brahmin, listen to this Trisprisha vow as I tell it.
Verse 4 (padma.6.34.4)
pratyakṣamarcitastena kalikāle ca keśavaḥ trispṛśā kīrtanaṁ nityaṁ yaḥ karoti mahāmune
Whoever constantly performs the recitation of Trisprisha, O great sage — through that, Keshava is worshipped directly, even in the Kali age.
Verse 5 (padma.6.34.5)
na puraścaraṇe cīrṇe sarvapāpakṣayo bhavet trispṛśā nāmamātreṇa kṣīyate nātra saṁśayaḥ
Even without the preliminary rites, complete destruction of all sin occurs; by the mere name 'Trisprisha,' sin is destroyed, without doubt.
Verse 6 (padma.6.34.6)
nāgamairna purāṇādyairna makhaistīrthakoṭibhiḥ bahubhirvratasaṁghaiśca pūjitaistridaśairapi
Not by scriptures, nor by the Puranas, nor by sacrifices, nor by millions of tirthas, nor by many multitudes of vows, nor even by the worship of the thirty gods,
Verse 7 (padma.6.34.7)
mokṣo bhavati viprendra trispṛśā na kṛtā yadi mokṣārthe devadevena dṛṣṭā vai vaiṣṇavī tithiḥ
O best of brahmins, liberation does not come until Trisprisha is performed. For the sake of liberation, this Vaishnava tithi was seen by the God of gods himself.
Verse 8 (padma.6.34.8)
dvijānāṁ durvidaṁ sāṁkhyaṁ kalikāle viśeṣataḥ anigrahaśceṁdriyāṇāṁ sthiratvaṁ manaso nahi
Sankhya-discipline is exceptionally hard for the twice-born to attain in the Kali age; there is neither restraint of the senses, nor steadiness of mind.
Verse 9 (padma.6.34.9)
viṣayairviprayuktānāṁ dhyānadhāraṇavarjinām kāmabhogaprasaktānāṁ trispṛśā mokṣadāyinī
For those engaged in sense-objects, devoid of meditation and concentration, and attached to desire and enjoyment, Trisprisha is the giver of liberation.
Verse 10 (padma.6.34.10)
mahyaṁ caiva purā proktā caturvaktrasya sāgare kṣīrode praṇatānāṁ tu matsyarūpeṇa cakriṇā
It was declared by me, in the form of the Fish, the Discus-bearer, to the four-faced Brahma, in the Ocean of Milk, for those who bowed before me.
Verse 11 (padma.6.34.11)
trispṛśāṁ ye kariṣyaṁti viṣayairapi saṁyutāḥ teṣāmapi mayā datto mokṣaḥ sāṁkhyavivarjinām
To those who perform Trisprisha, even while engaged in sense-objects, I have granted liberation, even devoid of Sankhya-discipline.
Verse 12 (padma.6.34.12)
kāmabhogaprasaktānāṁ trispṛśā mokṣadāyinī bahubhirmunisaṁghaiśca kṛteyaṁ ca mahāmune
For those attached to desire and enjoyment, Trisprisha is the giver of liberation; it has been performed, O great sage, by many multitudes of sages.
Verse 13 (padma.6.34.13)
kārttike śuklapakṣe tu trispṛśā jāyate yadi somena somajenāpi pāpakoṭivināśinī
If Trisprisha falls in the bright fortnight of Kartika, with the moon and the moon's own son [Wednesday], it destroys ten million sins.
Verse 14 (padma.6.34.14)
yasyā upoṣaṇakṛto hatyāyukta maheśituḥ hastādbrahmakapālaṁ tu tatkṣaṇātpatitaṁ bhuvi
By whoever's fast was undertaken — even the very skull of Brahma, the sin that clung to great Ishvara's hand, fell instantly to the ground.
Verse 15 (padma.6.34.15)
kalikalmaṣakoṭyaughairmuktā devī trimārgagā upadeśānmādhavasya trispṛśā samupoṣaṇāt
The goddess of the triple path was freed, by Madhava's instruction, through the fasting of Trisprisha, from the accumulated masses of Kali-age sin.
Verse 16 (padma.6.34.16)
hatyāṣṭau bāhuvīryasya pūrvajātā mahāmune gatā bhṛgūpadeśena trispṛśā samupoṣaṇāt
O great sage, the eight sins of killing born of Bahu's arm-strength were dispelled, by Bhrigu's instruction, through the fasting of Trisprisha.
Verse 17 (padma.6.34.17)
śatāyudhena vipreṁdra nihato brāhmaṇo vane brahmahatyāvinirmuktaḥ trispṛśā samupoṣaṇāt
O best of brahmins, freed from the sin of brahmin-killing, born from a brahmin slain in the forest by Shatayudha, through the fasting of Trisprisha.
Verse 18 (padma.6.34.18)
jīvopadeśācchakrasya hatyā namucisaṁbhavā vinaṣṭā munimukhyendra trispṛśā samupoṣaṇāt
By the counsel of the sages, Indra's sin arising from the killing of Namuchi was destroyed too, O foremost of sages, through the fasting of Trisprisha.
Verse 19 (padma.6.34.19)
brahmahatyādi pāpāni trispṛśāsamupoṣaṇāt vilayaṁ yāṁti vipreṁdra pāpeṣvanyeṣu kā kathā
O best of brahmins, sins such as brahmin-killing dissolve away through the fasting of Trisprisha — what then to speak of other sins?
Verse 20 (padma.6.34.20)
na prayāge na kāśyāṁ tu gomatyāṁ kṛṣṇasaṁnidhau mokṣo bhavati vipreṁdra trispṛśā yadi no kṛtā
O best of brahmins, not at Prayaga, not at Kashi, not even at Gomati in Krishna's presence, does liberation occur, if Trisprisha is not performed.
Verse 21 (padma.6.34.21)
maraṇācca prayāge tu gomatyāṁ kṛṣṇasannidhau snānamātreṇa gomatyāṁ muktirbhavati śāśvatī
But by death at Prayaga, at Gomati in Krishna's presence, or by mere bathing at Gomati, eternal liberation comes.
Verse 22 (padma.6.34.22)
gṛhepi jāyate muktistrispṛśā samupoṣaṇāt viṣaye varttamānasya kāmabhogānvitasya ca
Even for one engaged in sense-objects and attached to desire and enjoyment, liberation arises even at home, through the fasting of Trisprisha.
Verse 23 (padma.6.34.23)
nivṛttaviṣayasyāpi muktiḥ sāṁkhyena durllabhā tasmātkuruṣva vipreṁdra trispṛśāṁ mokṣadāyinīm
Even for one withdrawn from sense-objects, liberation through Sankhya alone is hard to attain; therefore, O best of brahmins, perform Trisprisha, the giver of liberation.
Verse 24 (padma.6.34.24)
nārada uvāca kīdṛśaṁ tatsuraśreṣṭha trispṛśākhyaṁ mahāvratam muktidaṁ yad dvijātīnāṁ tvayā proktaṁ mamādhunā
Narada said: What is this great vow called Trisprisha, O best of gods, which grants liberation to the twice-born, as you have now told me?
Verse 25 (padma.6.34.25)
mahādeva uvāca jāhnavyai sā purā vipra trispṛśā mādhavena tu prācī sarasvatī tīre kathitā tvanukaṁpayā
Mahadeva said: O brahmin, long ago it was Madhava who, out of compassion, told this Trisprisha to Jahnavi on the eastern bank of the Sarasvati.
Verse 26 (padma.6.34.26)
jāhnavyuvāca kalikalmaṣa koṭyaughairbrahmahatyādikairyutāḥ kalikāle hṛṣīkeśa snānaṁ kurvaṁti majjale
Jahnavi said: O Hrishikesha, in the Kali age people, laden with accumulated masses of Kali-age sin such as brahmin-killing, bathe in my waters.
Verse 27 (padma.6.34.27)
teṣāṁ pāpaśatairdoṣairdeho me kaluṣī kṛtaḥ kathaṁ yāsyati me deva pātakaṁ garuḍadhvaja
By the faults of their hundreds of sins, my very body has been made impure; O God, O Garuda-bannered one, how shall this taint of mine depart?
Verse 28 (padma.6.34.28)
prācīmādhava uvāca kathayāmi na saṁdeho mā putri rodanaṁkuru śyāmovaṭastu me sthānaṁ prācīdevī mamāgrataḥ
Prachi-Madhava said: I shall tell you — have no doubt, do not weep, my daughter. The dark banyan tree is my place, before Prachi Devi, before me.
Verse 29 (padma.6.34.29)
vahate brahmatanayā dṛṣṭvāgre ca sureśvarīm snānaṁ kuruṣva nityaṁ tvaṁ tvatra pūtā bhaviṣyasi
Brahma's daughter flows there; beholding that goddess of the gods before her, bathe there always — you shall become pure.
Verse 30 (padma.6.34.30)
yatra brahmasutā prācī tatrāhaṁ nātra saṁśayaḥ tīrthakoṭiśatairyuktaḥ suraiḥ saha vasāmyaham
Where Brahma's daughter, Prachi, is, there I too am, without doubt; together with millions of tirthas and with the gods, I dwell there.
Verse 31 (padma.6.34.31)
pavitraṁ matpriyaṁ sthānaṁ hatyākoṭivināśanam saṁtuṣṭena mayā dattaṁ yasmātprāṇādhikāsi me
That is my pure, beloved place, destroyer of ten million sins of killing; since you are dearer to me than life itself, I have given this, well pleased.
Verse 32 (padma.6.34.32)
tīrthakoṭisahasrāṇi nityaṁ tiṣṭhaṁti jāhnavi prācīsarasvatī toye sarvadaiva mamājñayā
O Jahnavi, thousands of millions of tirthas ever abide in the waters of Prachi Sarasvati, always, by my very command.
Verse 33 (padma.6.34.33)
brahmavadhātsurāpānātgodhavādvṛṣalīvadhāt brahmasvaharaṇādeva mātāpitrostvapūjanāt
From the sin of killing a brahmin, from drinking liquor, from killing a cow, from killing a low-caste woman, from seizing a brahmin's property, from failing to honor mother and father,
Verse 34 (padma.6.34.34)
cakriyānādgurudrohādabhakṣyasya ca bhakṣaṇāt sarvapāpasya karaṇātprācī brahmasutā sute
from theft, from betraying one's guru, from eating forbidden food — from all these sins too, my daughter, Prachi, daughter of Brahma —
Verse 35 (padma.6.34.35)
vyapohayati pāpāni sakṛtsnānena me'grataḥ kuru snānaṁ saricchreṣṭhe vipāpā tvaṁ bhaviṣyasi
dispels these sins, with a single bath before me. Bathe, O finest of rivers, and you shall become free of sin.
Verse 36 (padma.6.34.36)
jāhnavyuvāca nāhaṁ śaknomi deveśa āgaṁtuṁ nityameva hi kathaṁ naśyaṁti pāpāni kathayasveha mādhava
Jahnavi said: O Lord of gods, I am unable to come there every single day; O Madhava, tell me here, how may these sins be destroyed?
Verse 37 (padma.6.34.37)
prācīmādhava uvāca na śaknoṣi yadāgaṁtuṁ nityameva hi jāhnavi tadānyatsaṁpravakṣyāmi yasmānmatpādasaṁbhavā
Prachi-Madhava said: O Jahnavi, since you cannot come every single day, I shall then tell you something else, since you arose from my own feet.
Verse 38 (padma.6.34.38)
sarasvatyadhikā yā ca tīrthakoṭiśatādhikā makhakoṭyadhikā vāpi vratadānādhikā ca yā
That which is greater than the Sarasvati, greater than hundreds of millions of tirthas, greater than millions of sacrifices, greater than gifts and vows,
Verse 39 (padma.6.34.39)
japahomādhikā yā ca caturvargaphalapradā sāṁkhyayogādhikā yā ca trispṛśā kriyatāṁ śubhā
greater than japa and homa, granting the fruit of the four aims of life, greater than Sankhya-yoga — perform that auspicious Trisprisha.
Verse 40 (padma.6.34.40)
yasminmāse samāyāti sitā ca yadi vāsitā kartavyā sā saricchreṣṭhe kṛte pāpātpramucyate
In whatever month it comes, whether in the bright or dark fortnight, it should be observed, O finest of rivers; performed, one is freed from sin.
Verse 41 (padma.6.34.41)
jāhnavyuvāca kīdṛśī trispṛśā deva mamākhyāhi sumādhava īdṛśo mahimā yasyāstvayā prokto mamādhunā
Jahnavi said: What is this Trisprisha, O God, tell me, O gracious Madhava; such is its glory as you have now declared to me.
Verse 42 (padma.6.34.42)
daśamyekādaśībhadrā dinaikasminyadā bhavet trispṛśā sā bhaveddeva vānyathā vada me prabho
If the tenth, the eleventh, and Bhadra fall on a single day, would that be Trisprisha, O God, or otherwise — tell me, O Lord.
Verse 43 (padma.6.34.43)
kṛṣṇa uvāca āsurī trispṛśā devī yā tvayā parikīrtitā varjanīyā prayatnena vṛttihīno yathā patiḥ
Krishna said: O Goddess, that which you have described is the 'demonic Trisprisha,' to be avoided with effort, as a husband without livelihood is avoided.
Verse 44 (padma.6.34.44)
asurāṇāṁ tu sā proktā āyurbalavināśinī varjanīyā prayatnena yathā nārī rajasvalā
That is declared to belong to the demons, destroying life and strength; it is to be avoided with effort, as a menstruating woman is avoided.
Verse 45 (padma.6.34.45)
svajātiṁ ca parityajya yā gatādhamajātiṣu saiva tyājyaṁ viśeṣeṇa daśamīyuktaṁ hi maddinam
That which abandons its own class and goes among the lower classes — that especially is to be rejected — namely my day joined with the tenth.
Verse 46 (padma.6.34.46)
yathā rajasvalāsaṁgāddūṣyaṁte jñānavarjitāḥ tathaiva daśamīyuktaṁ maddinaṁ dūṣitaṁ nṛṇām
Just as those devoid of knowledge become defiled by contact with a menstruating woman, so too, joined with the tenth, my day becomes defiled for men.
Verse 47 (padma.6.34.47)
hatyāyutaśataṁ haṁti trispṛśā samupoṣitā ekādaśī dvādaśī ca rātriśeṣe trayodaśī
Duly fasted Trisprisha destroys a hundred thousand sins of killing — when the eleventh, the twelfth, and, in the remaining part of the night, the thirteenth fall together —
Verse 48 (padma.6.34.48)
trispṛśā sā tu vijñeyā daśamīsahitā na hi kṛtvāparādhaṁ mucyeta prāyaścitte kṛte naraḥ
that should be known as the true Trisprisha, not one joined with the tenth. Having committed an offense, a man may be freed by performing atonement,
Verse 49 (padma.6.34.49)
daśamīvedhajaṁ doṣaṁ na kṣamāmi surāpage bhuktaṁ hālāhalaṁ tena viṣasya bhakṣaṇaṁ kṛtam
but I do not forgive the fault born from the touching of the tenth, O river of the gods; one who eats it has, as it were, eaten deadly poison.
Verse 50 (padma.6.34.50)
daśamīmiśritaṁ yena kṛtamekādaśīvratam iti matvā na karttavyaṁ maddinaṁ daśamīyutam
Whoever performs the Ekadashi vow mixed with the tenth, thinking it thus, should not do so — my day joined with the tenth should not be observed.
Verse 51 (padma.6.34.51)
janmakoṭikṛtaṁpuṇyaṁ saṁtānaṁ yāti saṁkṣayam pātayetsvakulaṁ svargānnayate rauravādikam
Merit accumulated over ten million births comes to ruin, along with one's progeny; it casts down one's own lineage from heaven and leads it to Raurava and other hells.
Verse 52 (padma.6.34.52)
svadehaṁ śodhayitvā tu karttavyo mama vāsaraḥ vṛddhau tyājyā vinā vedhācchravaṇādiṣu saṁyutā
Having purified one's own body, my day should be observed; at the time of increase, without the touching of the Shravana and similar nakshatras, it should be avoided.
Verse 53 (padma.6.34.53)
janmapuṇyaṁ kṣayaṁ yāti ekādaśyupavāsinām saṁvṛddhau tu viśeṣeṇa saṁdehe samupasthite
When doubt arises, especially in a state of increase, the merit of birth is destroyed for those who fast on the eleventh.
Verse 54 (padma.6.34.54)
mamājñayā ca karttavyā dvādaśīvallabhā mama
By my own command, the twelfth, dear to me, should then be observed.
Verse 55 (padma.6.34.55)
jāhnavyuvāca kariṣye'haṁ jagannātha trispṛśāṁ vacanāttava sarvapāpavinirmuktā bhaviṣyāmi tavājñayā
Jahnavi said: I shall perform Trisprisha, O Lord of the world, at your word; I shall become freed from all sin, by your command.
Verse 56 (padma.6.34.56)
Sri Krishna said: Go to your own place, blessings be upon you; you need never have any fear. O Goddess, finest of rivers, sin shall never taint you again.
Verse 57 (padma.6.34.57)
snātvā sarasvatītoye ye'rcayitvā ca mādhavam praṇamaṁti jagannāthaṁ te yāṁti paramāṁ gatim
Those who, having bathed in the waters of the Sarasvati and worshipped Madhava, bow to the Lord of the world, attain the supreme goal.
Verse 58 (padma.6.34.58)
jāhnavyuvāca vidhānaṁ brūhi me brahmansarvasvena karomyaham prasādayāmi deveśaṁ dāmodaramanāmayam

Shiva said: O twice-born, hearing this wondrous, hair-raising account of Trisprisha, one obtains the merit born of bathing in the Ganga.
Verse 79 (padma.6.34.79)
aśvamedhasahasrāṇi vājapeyaśatāni ca tatphalaṁ samavāpnoti trispṛśā samupoṣaṇāt
Whatever fruit is declared for a thousand horse-sacrifices, and a hundred Vajapeya sacrifices — that fruit is obtained through the fasting of Trisprisha.
Verse 80 (padma.6.34.80)
pitṛpakṣo mātṛpakṣastathā caivātmapakṣakaḥ taiḥ sarvaiḥ saha saṁmukto viṣṇuloke mahīyate
One's paternal line, maternal line, and one's own line — freed together with all of these, one is honored in the world of Vishnu.
Verse 81 (padma.6.34.81)
tīrthakoṭiṣu yatpuṇyaṁ kṣetrakoṭiṣu yatphalam tatphalaṁ samavāpnoti trispṛśā samupoṣaṇāt
Whatever merit exists in millions of tirthas, whatever fruit exists in millions of sacred fields — that fruit is obtained through the fasting of Trisprisha.
Verse 82 (padma.6.34.82)
brāhmaṇā ye'pi kurvaṁti kṣatriyāḥ kṛṣṇamānasāḥ vaiśyā vā śūdrajanmāno ye tathā cānyajātayaḥ
Whatever brahmins, Krishna-devoted kshatriyas, vaishyas, those born as shudras, or other castes as well, perform it,
Verse 83 (padma.6.34.83)
te sarve muktimāyāṁti bhuvaṁ tyaktvā dvijottama maṁtrāṇāṁ maṁtrarājo'tha yathā syāddvādaśākṣaraḥ
O best of the twice-born, all of them, leaving this earth, attain liberation. As the twelve-syllabled mantra is the king of mantras,
Verse 84 (padma.6.34.84)
vratānāṁ ca yathā caiṣā yena vai trispṛśā kṛtā brahmaṇā ca kṛtā pūrvaṁ paścādrājarṣibhiḥ kṛtā
so too is Trisprisha the king among vows, by whomever performed; it was performed by Brahma first, and afterward by royal sages.
Verse 85 (padma.6.34.85)
anyeṣāṁ kā kathā vatsa trispṛśā muktidāyinī anena vidhinā brahmaṁstrispṛśāsaṁbhavaṁ vratam
My child, what then to say of others — Trisprisha is the giver of liberation. By this very procedure, O brahmin, the vow arising from Trisprisha —
Verse 86 (padma.6.34.86)
yaḥ karoti naro bhaktyā śṛṇu vakṣyāmi tatphalam gaṁgāvagāhane brahmanvārāṇasyāṁ tu yatphalam
whoever performs it with devotion, listen, I shall tell you its fruit. O brahmin, whatever fruit exists from bathing in the Ganga at Varanasi,
Verse 87 (padma.6.34.87)
manvaṁtarasahasraistu trispṛśākārako hi tat prācī ca yamunā snāne varṣairyatkoṭibhiḥ phalam
that is obtained by the performer of Trisprisha over a thousand manvantaras. And whatever fruit exists from bathing at the Prachi and Yamuna over millions of years,
Verse 88 (padma.6.34.88)
tatphalaṁ samavāpnoti trispṛśāvratakṛnnaraḥ tatphalaṁ tu kurukṣetre sūryagrahaṇakoṭibhiḥ
that fruit is obtained by a man who performs the Trisprisha vow. Whatever fruit exists at Kurukshetra during millions of solar eclipses,
Verse 89 (padma.6.34.89)
hemabhāraśatairdānaistrispṛśākaraṇena tat pāpakoṭisahasrāṇi hatyākoṭiśatāni ca
and from gifts of hundreds of loads of gold — that is obtained through the performance of Trisprisha. Thousands of millions of sins, and hundreds of millions of sins of killing,
Verse 90 (padma.6.34.90)
ekenaivopavāsena kriyate bhasmasāddrutam trispṛśāyā vrataṁ yattu agatīnāṁ gatipradam
are swiftly reduced to ashes by a single fast of this kind. This vow of Trisprisha grants a path even to the pathless.
Verse 91 (padma.6.34.91)
gatimicchaṁti viprarṣe mahatpāpaśatāni ca svayaṁ kṛṣṇena kathitaṁ pārāśaryasya cāgrataḥ
O sage among brahmins, even hundreds of great sins seek this same path; it was told by Krishna himself, before Parashara's son.
Verse 92 (padma.6.34.92)
prakāśayati yaścedaṁ likhitvā vaiṣṇavaṁ dvije pāpoghairgrathitasyāpi tasya muktirbhaviṣyati
Whoever proclaims this, having written it down as Vaishnava teaching, for a brahmin — even one bound by masses of sin shall attain liberation.
Verse 93 (padma.6.34.93)
puṇyairavāpyate vidvanmanvaṁtaraśatairapi trispṛśā durlabhā loke prāpyate naiva mānavaiḥ
O learned one, it is obtained through merit accumulated over hundreds of manvantaras; Trisprisha is rare in the world, hardly attained by men.
Verse 94 (padma.6.34.94)
kalau ye trispṛśāṁ labdhvā na kurvaṁti narādhamāḥ teṣāṁ janmaphalaṁ caiva jīvitaṁ viphalaṁ bhavet
Those base men in the Kali age who, having obtained Trisprisha, do not perform it — for them, both the fruit of their birth and their whole life become fruitless.
Verse 95 (padma.6.34.95)
pretatvaṁ taiḥ samuttīrṇaṁ vinā śrāddhairvinā sutaiḥ kṛtā yaistrispṛśā vidvansakṛtprāpya kalau yuge
O learned one, those who have performed Trisprisha, having obtained it even once in the Kali age, pass beyond even the state of a hungry ghost, without shraddha-rites and without sons.
