The Unmilani Vow

Chapter 34All chaptersChapter 36

Verse 1 (padma.6.35.1)

mahādeva uvāca atastvāṁ saṁpravakṣyāmi unmīlanīmanuttamām yasyāḥ śravaṇamātreṇa janmasaṁsārabaṁdhanāt

Mahadeva said: Now I shall tell you the unsurpassed Unmilani, by the mere hearing of which one is freed from the bondage of birth in this world,

Verse 2 (padma.6.35.2)

pāpātmā mucyate pāpaiḥ svargaloke mahīyate devatāḥ pitaraścaiva tasyā gatimavāpnuyuḥ

a sinful soul is freed from sins and is honored in the world of heaven; the gods and ancestors too attain its very destination.

Verse 3 (padma.6.35.3)

vidyārthī labhate vidyāṁ sarvakāmānavāpnuyāt tasyā vratānna saṁdehaḥ svargaloke mahīyate

A seeker of knowledge obtains knowledge, and obtains every desire; through its vow, without doubt, one is honored in the world of heaven.

Verse 4 (padma.6.35.4)

svasthānaṁ tatra vai prāptaḥ śivaloke mahīyate atastvaṁ kuruṣe rājanvaiṣṇavānāṁ tu pūjanam

Having attained one's own place there, one is honored in the world of Shiva too. Therefore, O king, you perform worship of the Vaishnavas,

Verse 5 (padma.6.35.5)

vaiṣṇavānāṁ tu ye rājansevā kurvaṁti nityaśaḥ teṣāṁ daṁḍaṁ ca kuruṣe no vā teṣāṁ narādhipaḥ

O king, those who constantly serve the Vaishnavas — do you punish them, or not, O lord of men?

Verse 6 (padma.6.35.6)

bhojanānaṁtaraṁ teṣāṁ bhojanaṁ kurute nṛpa taireva pūjito viṣṇuryairbhaktyā tu prapūjitaḥ

O king, after their meal, you take your own meal; Vishnu himself is worshipped by those who have worshipped him with devotion.

Verse 7 (padma.6.35.7)

śālagrāmaśilābhūtāṁ dattvā mūrddhani pratyaham tvaṁ dhārayasi bhūpāla kaṁṭhe nityaṁ subhaktitaḥ

Having placed a Shaligrama stone upon your head each day, O king of the earth, you wear it always around your neck, with true devotion.

Verse 8 (padma.6.35.8)

dhūpaśeṣaṁ tu vai viṣṇorbhaktyā bhajasi bhūpate ārārtikaṁ sadā kṛtvā bhaktānāṁ vedayernṛpa

O lord of the earth, you partake, with devotion, of the remainder of Vishnu's incense; having always performed the waving of lights, O king, you give it to your devotees.

Verse 9 (padma.6.35.9)

śaṁkhodakaṁ harermūrdhni bhrāmayitvā tu bhaktitaḥ nityaṁ bibharṣi śirasi śeṣaṁ yacchasi vaiṣṇavān

Having circled conch-water above Hari's head with devotion, you always bear it upon your own head, and give the remainder to the Vaishnavas.

Verse 10 (padma.6.35.10)

naivedyaṁ pratyahaṁ kṛtvā sarvopaskarasaṁyutam viṣvaksenāya datvā vai svayaṁ bhunakṣi vāḍava

Having made a food-offering daily, complete with every accompaniment, and given it to Vishvaksena, you yourself, O brahmin, partake of it.

Verse 11 (padma.6.35.11)

viṣṇorniveditaṁ cānnaṁ vaiṣṇavaiḥ saha bhujyate nityaṁ nāmasahasreṇa bhaktyā stauṣi janārdanam

The food offered to Vishnu is eaten together with the Vaishnavas; you daily praise Janardana with devotion, through his thousand names.

Verse 12 (padma.6.35.12)

dīpārghadānaṁ vai viṣṇoḥ kuruṣe gītanartanam śyāmāṁkuraiḥ pūjayase pūjyaṁte nṛpasattama

You perform the offering of lamps and oblations to Vishnu, and arrange song and dance; O best of kings, you worship with dark sprouts, and are worshipped in turn.

Verse 13 (padma.6.35.13)

śyāmāṁkuraiḥ sadā vatsa pūjanaṁ cāti durllabham pṛthvīdānasamaṁ puṇyaṁ dūrvayā pūjane kṛte

My son, worship with dark sprouts is always exceedingly rare; the merit of worshipping with durva grass equals the gift of the whole earth.

Verse 14 (padma.6.35.14)

ato vai nāsti loke'smindūrvāyāḥ sadṛśaṁ bhuvi tayā vai pūjanaṁ kāryaṁ viṣṇusāyujyamicchatā

Therefore there is nothing in this world equal to durva grass upon this earth; worship with it should be performed by one who desires union with Vishnu.

Verse 15 (padma.6.35.15)

atastvaṁ kuruṣe nityaṁ pūjanaṁ dūrvayā saha yavākṣatairviśeṣeṇa pūjanaṁ kuruṣena vā

Therefore you always perform worship together with durva grass; you also perform worship especially with barley and unbroken rice.

Verse 16 (padma.6.35.16)

pakṣepakṣe nṛpaśreṣṭha vidhivaddvādaśīvratam yatkṛtaṁ tu mahārāja mahāpāpapraṇāśanam

O best of kings, fortnight after fortnight, the duly performed Dvadashi vow, great king, destroys great sin,

Verse 17 (padma.6.35.17)

mokṣadaṁ sukhadaṁ caiva tathāyuṣyapradaṁ sadā etadviṣṇuvrataṁ proktaṁ vaiṣṇavānāṁ tu mokṣadam

it grants liberation and happiness, and ever grants long life; this Vishnu-vow is declared to be the giver of liberation for the Vaishnavas.

Verse 18 (padma.6.35.18)

gṛhasthānāṁ tu sukhadaṁ yatīnāṁ muktidāyakam sarvarogādiśamanaṁ pavitraṁ kāyaśodhanam

For householders it brings happiness, for ascetics it grants liberation; it calms all diseases, and purifies the body, pure as it is.

Verse 19 (padma.6.35.19)

vratametacca kuruṣe no vā caiva narādhipa daśamīvedharahitaṁ kuruṣe jāgarānvitam

O lord of men, whether you perform this vow or not, you do it free of overlap with the tenth, together with a night-vigil.

Verse 20 (padma.6.35.20)

tulasīpatranikarairnityaṁ pūjayase harim gopīcaṁdanajaṁ patraṁ bhāle vā nṛpasattama

You daily worship Hari with masses of Tulsi leaves; O best of kings, the mark made from Gopichandana upon the forehead,

Verse 21 (padma.6.35.21)

dhāritaṁ sarvalokānāṁ pavitrīkaraṇaṁ nṛpa atastvaṁ ca dhārayase gopīcaṁdanasaṁbhavam

worn, O king, is the purifier of all worlds. Therefore you too bear a mark made from Gopichandana.

Verse 22 (padma.6.35.22)

brahmahā hemahārī ca madyapānī tathaiva ca agamyago mahāpāpī tathā hyanṛtabhāṣitaḥ

The killer of a brahmin, the stealer of gold, the drinker of liquor, likewise one who goes where he should not, the great sinner, and the speaker of falsehood —

Verse 23 (padma.6.35.23)

te sarve muktimāyāṁti tilakaṁ dhāraṇādṛtāḥ bibharṣi kaṁṭhe nityaṁ tvaṁ dhātrīphalasamudbhavām

all of these attain liberation, honored by wearing the tilaka. You constantly bear a garland made from amalaka fruit around your neck,

Verse 24 (padma.6.35.24)

mālāṁ mukhyāyutasamāṁ tulasīpatrasaṁbhavām śālagrāmaśilāyuktāṁ dvārakāyāṁ samudbhavām

equal to ten thousand chief garlands, made of Tulsi leaves, joined with a Shaligrama stone, made at Dvaraka —

Verse 25 (padma.6.35.25)

nityaṁ pūjayase bhūpa bhuktimuktiphalapradām padmasaṁjñaṁ purāṇaṁ vai paṭhase purato hareḥ

you constantly worship this, O king, giver of the fruit of enjoyment and liberation; you recite the Purana named Padma before Hari,

Verse 26 (padma.6.35.26)

caritaṁ daityarājyasya prahlādasya ca bhūpate vāsaraṁ vāsudevasya savedhaṁ kurvato narān

O king, the deeds of the demon-king Prahlada; and those people who cause Vasudeva's day to overlap with the tenth,

Verse 27 (padma.6.35.27)

nivārayasi bhūpāla śāstraṁ dṛṣṭvā prayatnataḥ savedhaṁ vāsaraṁ viṣṇoryasminrāṣṭre pravartate

O king of the earth, having examined scripture, you diligently prevent them; in whatever kingdom Vishnu's day is allowed to occur with such overlap,

Verse 28 (padma.6.35.28)

lipyate tena pāpena rājā bhavati nārakī vedhaṁ caturvidhaṁ tyaktvā samupoṣya harerdinam kulakoṭiṁ samuddhṛtya viṣṇuloke mahīyate

the king is tainted by that sin and becomes a denizen of hell. Avoiding the fourfold overlap, having duly fasted on Hari's day, saving millions of one's lineage, one is honored in the world of Vishnu.

Verse 29 (padma.6.35.29)

gautama uvāca śṛṇu bhūpāla vakṣyāmi vaiṣṇavākhyaṁ mahāvratam yaṁ śrutvā pāpinaḥ sarve muktimāyāṁti tatkṣaṇāt

Gautama said: Listen, O king, I shall tell the great vow called Vaishnava, hearing which all sinners attain liberation instantly.

Verse 30 (padma.6.35.30)

dvādaśīsaṁbhavaṁ puṇyaṁ mayā khyātaṁ na kasyacit

This merit arising from the Dvadashi has never been declared by me to anyone.

Verse 31 (padma.6.35.31)

vaiṣṇavo'si mahārāja bhakto bhāgavate nṛṇām vaiṣṇavaṁ tu mahāguhyaṁ tadvrataṁ tvaṁ niśāmaya

Great king, you are a Vaishnava, a devotee of the Bhagavata among men; hear this great secret Vaishnava vow.

Verse 32 (padma.6.35.32)

unmīlanī nāma purā bhaktyā me mādhavena tu kathitā suprasannena tāṁ te bhūpa vadāmyaham

Long ago this Unmilani was told to me, with devotion, by well-pleased Madhava — that, O king, I now tell you.

Verse 33 (padma.6.35.33)

ekādaśī ahorātraṁ prabhāte ghaṭikā bhavet unmīlanī tu sā jñeyā viśeṣeṇa haripriyā

When the Ekadashi lasts a day and night, and in the morning a ghatika of the twelfth remains, that should be known as Unmilani, especially dear to Hari.

Verse 34 (padma.6.35.34)

trailokye yāni tīrthāni puṇyānyāyatanāni ca koṭyaṁśe naiva tulyāni makhā vedāstapāṁsi ca

Whatever meritorious tirthas and temples exist in the three worlds, sacrifices, Vedas, and austerities —

Verse 35 (padma.6.35.35)

unmīlanī samaṁ kiṁcinna bhūtaṁ na bhaviṣyati prayāgo na kurukṣetraṁ na kāśī na ca puṣkaraḥ

none of them is equal even to a ten-millionth part of Unmilani; there has never been, nor shall ever be, anything equal to Unmilani. Not Prayaga, not Kurukshetra, not Kashi, not Pushkara,

Verse 36 (padma.6.35.36)

not the mountain Himachal, not Meru, not Gandhamadana, not the mountain Nilanishadha, not Vindhya, not Naimisha,

Verse 37 (padma.6.35.37)

not the Godavari, not the Kaveri, not the Chandrabhaga, not the Vedika, not the Tapi, not the Payoshni, not the Kshipra, not the Chandana,

Verse 38 (padma.6.35.38)

carmaṇvatī ca sarayūścaṁdrabhāgā na gaṁḍikā gomatī ca vipāśā ca śoṇākhyaśca mahānadaḥ

not the Charmanvati, not the Sarayu, not the Chandrabhaga, not the Gandaki, not the Gomati, not the Vipasha, and not the great river named Shona —

Verse 39 (padma.6.35.39)

kimatra bahunoktena bhūyobhūyo narādhipa unmīlanīsamaṁ kiṁcinna devaḥ keśavātparaḥ

O lord of men, what need is there to say more, again and again? Nothing equals Unmilani; there is no god higher than Keshava.

Verse 40 (padma.6.35.40)

unmīlanīmanu prāpya yaiḥ kṛtaṁ keśavārcanam pāpacakrasamūhasya rāśayaḥ patitāḥ kṣaṇāt

By those who, having obtained Unmilani, worship Keshava, the heaps of the whole wheel-mass of sin fall away instantly.

Verse 41 (padma.6.35.41)

yasminmāse mahīpāla tithirunmīlanī bhavet tanmāsanāmnā goviṁdaḥ pūjanīyaḥ prayatnataḥ

O king of the earth, in whatever month the Unmilani tithi falls, in that month's own name Govinda should be worshipped with diligence.

Verse 42 (padma.6.35.42)

An image of Madhava, named after the month, should be made of gold, of the form of the universe, according to one's own means, with faith and devotion.

Verse 43 (padma.6.35.43)

joined with the scent of jasmine, worshipped with jati flowers, should be diligently filled with white rice.
