Uttara Khanda · Chapter 37

The Glory of the Ekadashi-Dvadashi Night Vigil

Chapter 36All chaptersChapter 38

Verse 1 (padma.6.37.1)

mahādeva uvāca śṛṇu nārada vakṣyāmi māhātmyaṁ jāgarasya ca yacchrutvā muktimāpnoti mahāpāpī na saṁśayaḥ

Mahadeva said: Listen, Narada, I shall tell the glory of the night-vigil, hearing which even a great sinner attains liberation, without doubt.

Verse 2 (padma.6.37.2)

nārada uvāca aho viśveśvaro viṣṇuḥ pavitrīkaraṇaḥ sadā tasyopavāsamāhātmyaṁ śrutaṁ hi tvanmukhācchiva

Narada said: Ah, Vishnu, Lord of the universe, is ever the purifier; the glory of his fasting I have heard from your very mouth, O Shiva.

Verse 3 (padma.6.37.3)

tathāpi śrotumicchāmi māhātmyaṁ jāgarasya tu kīdṛkjāgaramāhātmyaṁ rātro bhaktistu kīdṛśī

Even so, I wish to hear the glory of the night-vigil — what is the glory of the night-vigil, and what is devotion at night?

Verse 4 (padma.6.37.4)

prahareṣu ca yā pūjā vada viśveśvara prabho tvaṁ lokeṣu sadā pūjyastvaṁ hi devo janārdanaḥ tvaṁ hi viśveśvaro devo yato bhaktirjanārdane

And what worship should be done in each watch — tell me, O Lord of the universe. You are ever worshipped in the worlds, you are indeed the god Janardana;

Verse 5 (padma.6.37.5)

sarveṣāṁ caiva bhaktānāṁ tvaṁ ca śreṣṭha umāpatiḥ lokesminsarvadā bhaktyā tavākhyā varttate sadā

you are indeed the god, Lord of the universe, for devotion resides in Janardana. You are the finest of all devotees, O Umapati;

Verse 6 (padma.6.37.6)

ato yena prakāreṇa lokānāṁ muktireva ca viśveśvara vada tvaṁ tu māhātmyaṁ jāgarasya tu

in this world your name is ever spoken with devotion. Therefore, in whatever way liberation comes to the worlds, O Lord of the universe, tell me the glory of the night-vigil.

Verse 7 (padma.6.37.7)

mahādeva uvāca ekādaśyāṁ jano viṣṇuṁ rātrau saṁpūjya bhaktitaḥ kuryājjāgaraṇaṁ viṣṇoḥ purato vaiṣṇavaiḥ saha

Mahadeva said: On the eleventh, a person, having worshipped Vishnu at night with devotion, should perform a night-vigil before Vishnu together with the Vaishnavas.

Verse 8 (padma.6.37.8)

gītaṁ vādyaṁ tathā nṛtyaṁ purāṇapaṭhanaṁ tathā dhūpaṁ dīpaṁ ca naivedyaṁ puṣpaṁ gaṁdhānulepanam

With song, music, and dance, and Purana-recitation; incense, a lamp, and food-offering, flowers and fragrant anointing,

Verse 9 (padma.6.37.9)

phalamarghaṁ tathā śraddhā dānamiṁdriyasaṁyamam satyānvitaṁ ca vipreṁdra vacoyuktaṁ kriyānvitam

fruit and oblation, and faith, gift-giving, and control of the senses; O best of brahmins, joined with truth, with speech and action,

Verse 10 (padma.6.37.10)

vinidraṁ ca mudāyukto yaḥ karoti naraḥ sadā sarvapāpavinirmukto jāyate viṣṇuvallabhaḥ

sleepless and filled with joy — whatever man does this always is freed from all sin and becomes dear to Vishnu.

Verse 11 (padma.6.37.11)

rātrau jāgaraṇe prāpte nidrāṁ kurvaṁti vaiṣṇavāḥ hāritaṁ copavāsaṁ tairvrataṁ vai viṣṇusaṁjñakam

When the night-vigil comes and Vaishnavas fall asleep, they lose the merit of the fast; the vow named for Vishnu is squandered by them.

Verse 12 (padma.6.37.12)

ye kurvaṁti narāḥ prājña jāgare viṣṇusaṁjñake jāgaraṁ kṛṣṇabhāvena na svapaṁti kadācana

O wise one, those men who perform the vigil sacred to Vishnu, keeping it in the very spirit of Krishna, never sleep at all.

Verse 13 (padma.6.37.13)

kṛṣṇasya nāma manasā vadaṁti ca punaḥ punaḥ te tu dhanyatamā jñeyā asyāṁ rātrau viśeṣataḥ

They speak Krishna's name in their minds, again and again — they should be known as most blessed, especially on this night.

Verse 14 (padma.6.37.14)

kṣaṇekṣaṇe tu godānaṁ ghaṭyāṁ caiva caturguṇam prahare koṭiguṇitaṁ caturyāmeṣvasaṁkhyakam

The merit of a gift of a cow, for every moment; fourfold for a ghatika; a hundred-million-fold for a watch; countless in the four watches.

Verse 15 (padma.6.37.15)

jāgare nimiṣārddhe tu keśavāgre viśeṣataḥ tatphalaṁ koṭiguṇitaṁ tasya saṁkhyā na vidyate

In half a moment's vigil, especially before Keshava, that fruit is multiplied ten million times — its number cannot be counted.

Verse 16 (padma.6.37.16)

narttanaṁ kurute yastu keśavāgre narottamaḥ na phalaṁ hīyate tasya ājanmamaraṇāṁtikam

Whoever, best of men, dances before Keshava — his fruit never diminishes, from birth to the very end of death.

Verse 17 (padma.6.37.17)

sāścaryaṁ caiva sotsāhaṁ pāpālāpādivarjitam pradakṣiṇasamāyuktaṁ namaskārapuraḥsaram

Filled with wonder and enthusiasm, free from any sinful talk, joined with circumambulation, preceded by salutations,

Verse 18 (padma.6.37.18)

nīrājanasamāyuktamanirviṇṇena cetasā yāmeyāme mahābhāga kuryādārārtikaṁ hareḥ

joined with the waving of lights, with an undespairing heart — watch by watch, O greatly fortunate one, one should perform the arati of Hari.

Verse 19 (padma.6.37.19)

ṣaḍviṁśaguṇasaṁyuktamekādaśyāṁ ca jāgaram yaḥ karoti naro bhaktyā na punarjāyate bhuvi

Joined with twenty-six qualities, whoever performs the Ekadashi night-vigil with devotion is never born again on this earth.

Verse 20 (padma.6.37.20)

ya evaṁ kurute bhaktyā vittaśāṭhyavivarjitaḥ jāgaraṁ vāsare viṣṇorlīyate paramātmani

Whoever performs it thus with devotion, free from miserliness in wealth, keeping the night-vigil on Vishnu's day, merges into the Supreme Self.

Verse 21 (padma.6.37.21)

dhanavānvittaśāṭhyena yaḥ karoti prajāgaram tenātmāhārito nūnaṁ kitavena durātmanā

A wealthy man who keeps the vigil with miserliness in wealth — by that, his very self is surely stolen away by his own wicked, deceitful mind.

Verse 22 (padma.6.37.22)

viṣṇujāgaraṇe prāpte upahāsaṁ karoti yaḥ ṣaṣṭivarṣasahasrāṇi viṣṭhāyāṁ jāyate kṛmiḥ

Whoever mocks Vishnu's night-vigil when it occurs, becomes a worm in excrement for sixty thousand years.

Verse 23 (padma.6.37.23)

vedavidbrāhmaṇo yastu narttanena viśeṣataḥ upahāsaparaḥ prāptaḥ sa vai cāṁḍāla ucyate

A brahmin learned in the Vedas who, especially through mockery of dancing, becomes intent on ridicule, is indeed called an outcaste.

Verse 24 (padma.6.37.24)

nimiṣaṁ nimiṣārddhaṁ vā yaḥ karoti prajāgaram dharmārthakāmamokṣāṇāṁ prāpnoti padamavyayam

Whoever keeps the vigil even for a moment, or half a moment, attains the imperishable state of dharma, artha, kama, and moksha.

Verse 25 (padma.6.37.25)

vedaśāstrarato nityaṁ nityaṁ vai yajñayājakaḥ rātrau jāgaraṇe prāpte niṁdāṁ kurvanvrajatyadhaḥ

One ever devoted to Vedic scripture, ever a performer of sacrifices, who, when the night-vigil occurs, speaks disparagement, goes downward.

Verse 26 (padma.6.37.26)

mama pūjāṁ prakurvāṇo viṣṇuniṁdāsu tatparaḥ ekaviṁśatkulenaiva narakaṁ pratipadyate

One who performs worship of me while being intent on reviling Vishnu falls into hell, together with twenty-one generations of his own lineage.

Verse 27 (padma.6.37.27)

viṣṇuḥ śivaḥ śivo viṣṇurekamūrtirdvidhā sthitāḥ tasmātsarvaprakāreṇa naiva niṁdāṁ prakārayet daṣṭāḥ kalibhujaṁgena svapaṁti madhuhāhani

Vishnu is Shiva, Shiva is Vishnu — one form standing in two; therefore one should never, in any way, engage in disparagement. Those bitten by Kali's serpent sleep on Madhuhan's very own day,

Verse 28 (padma.6.37.28)

kurvaṁti jāgaraṁ naiva māyayā te ca mohitāḥ prāptā ekādaśī yeṣāṁ kalau jāgaraṇaṁ vinā

bewildered by illusion, they do not perform the night-vigil. Those for whom the Ekadashi has come and gone in the Kali age without the night-vigil —

Verse 29 (padma.6.37.29)

they are destroyed, without doubt, since life is impermanent. Having given up the Vaishnava state, their very pair of eyes is as if taken away.

Verse 30 (padma.6.37.30)

kṛtaṁ ye naiva paśyaṁti pāpino harijāgaram abhāve vācakasyātha gītaṁ nṛtyaṁ tu kārayet

Sinners do not even behold Hari's night-vigil when it is performed. In the absence of a reciter, song and dance should be arranged.

Verse 31 (padma.6.37.31)

vācake sati devarṣe purāṇaṁ prathamaṁ paṭhet aśvamedhasahasrasya vājapeyāyutasya ca

O divine sage, when a reciter is present, the Purana should be recited first. Whatever is declared for a thousand horse-sacrifices, and ten thousand Vajapeya sacrifices,

Verse 32 (padma.6.37.32)

puṇyaṁ koṭiguṇaṁ vatsa viṣṇorjāgaraṇe kṛte pitṛpakṣe mātṛpakṣe bhāryāpakṣe tu vāḍava

my son, that merit is multiplied ten million times, when Vishnu's night-vigil is performed. O brahmin, one's paternal line, maternal line, and wife's line —

Verse 33 (padma.6.37.33)

kulānuddharate caitānkṛtvā jāgaraṇaṁ hareḥ upoṣaṇadine viddhe jāgaraṁ pūjanaṁ hareḥ

by performing Hari's night-vigil, these lineages are delivered. When the fasting-day coincides with an overlap, the night-vigil and worship of Hari,

Verse 34 (padma.6.37.34)

vṛthādānādikaṁ sarvaṁ kṛtaghneṣu kṛtaṁ yathā upoṣaṇadine viddhe prārabdhe jāgare sthitim

and all other gifts and the like become as futile as gifts given to the ungrateful. When the fasting-day is overlapped, and the night-vigil has begun,

Verse 35 (padma.6.37.35)

vihāya sthānaṁ tadviṣṇuḥ śāpaṁ datvā pragacchati aviddhe vāsare viṣṇorye kurvaṁti prajāgaram

Vishnu, abandoning that place, curses it and departs. Those who perform the night-vigil on Vishnu's un-overlapped day,

Verse 36 (padma.6.37.36)

teṣāṁ madhye tu tuṣṭaḥ sannṛtyaṁ tu kurute hariḥ yāvaddināni kurute jāgaraṁ keśavāgrataḥ

among them, well pleased, Hari himself dances. As many days as one performs the night-vigil before Keshava,

Verse 37 (padma.6.37.37)

yugāni tāni tāvaṁti viṣṇuloke mahīyate yāvaddināni vasate vinā jāgaraṇaṁ hareḥ

for that many ages one is honored in the world of Vishnu. As many days as one lives without Hari's night-vigil,

Verse 38 (padma.6.37.38)

tāvadvarṣasahasrāṇi rauravānna nivartate ekadaśyāṁ śayānastu vinā jāgaraṇaṁ hareḥ

for that many thousands of years one does not return from Raurava hell. Whoever, on the eleventh, lies sleeping without Hari's night-vigil,

Verse 39 (padma.6.37.39)

mūkavattiṣṭhate yo vai gānaṁ pāṭhaṁ na vācaret saptajanmāni mūkatvaṁ jāyate'jāgare hareḥ

or stands mute, performing neither song nor recitation, is born mute for seven births, through failing Hari's vigil.

Verse 40 (padma.6.37.40)

yo na nṛtyati mūḍhātmā purato jāgare hareḥ paṁgutvaṁ tasya jānīyātsaptajanmāni vāḍava

O brahmin, whoever, foolish of mind, does not dance before Hari's night-vigil, should know that he shall be lame for seven births.

Verse 41 (padma.6.37.41)

yaḥ punaḥ kurute gītaṁ nṛtyaṁ jāgaraṇaṁ hareḥ brāhmaṁ padaṁ madīyaṁ ca satyaṁ vai tasya vaiṣṇavam

But whoever performs song, dance, and Hari's night-vigil attains the state of Brahman, which is truly my own Vaishnava state.

Verse 42 (padma.6.37.42)

yaḥ prabodhayate lokānviṣṇorjāgaraṇe rataḥ vasecciraṁ tu vaikuṁṭhe pitṛbhiḥ saha vaiṣṇavaḥ

Whoever, devoted to Vishnu's night-vigil, awakens the people, dwells long in Vaikuntha as a Vaishnava, together with his ancestors.

Verse 43 (padma.6.37.43)

matiṁ prayacchate yastu harerjāgaraṇaṁ prati ṣaṣṭivarṣasahasrāṇi śvetadvīpe vasennaraḥ

Whoever inclines his mind toward Hari's night-vigil dwells for sixty thousand years on Shvetadvipa.

Verse 44 (padma.6.37.44)

yatkiṁcitkriyate pāpaṁ koṭijanmani mānavaiḥ śrīkṛṣṇajāgare sarvaṁ rātrau naśyati vāḍava

O brahmin, whatever sin men commit over ten million births — all of it is destroyed in a single night of Shri Krishna's night-vigil.

Verse 45 (padma.6.37.45)

śālagrāmaśilāgre ye kurvaṁti pratijāgaram yāmeyāme phalaṁ proktaṁ koṭyaiṁdavasamudbhavam

Those who perform continuous vigil before a Shaligrama stone — the fruit declared for each watch is equal to ten million lunar months' worth.

Verse 46 (padma.6.37.46)

saṁprāpte vāsare viṣṇorye na kurvaṁti jāgaram vṛthā syāttatkṛtaṁ teṣāṁ vaiṣṇavānāṁ ca niṁdayā

Those who, when Vishnu's day arrives, do not perform the night-vigil — whatever else they have done becomes futile, through their contempt for the Vaishnavas.

Verse 47 (padma.6.37.47)

kāmārthau saṁpadaḥ putrāḥ kīrtirlokāśca śāśvatāḥ yajñāyutairna labhyaṁte dvādaśījāgaraṁ vinā

Desire, wealth, prosperity, sons, fame, and eternal worlds — these are not obtained even by ten thousand sacrifices, without the Dvadashi night-vigil.

Verse 48 (padma.6.37.48)

matirna jāyate yasya dvādaśyāṁ jāgaraṁ prati na hi tasyādhikāro'sti pūjane keśavasya hi

Whoever's mind does not turn toward the night-vigil on the Dvadashi has no right at all to worship Keshava.

Verse 49 (padma.6.37.49)

yāvatpadāni calati keśavāyatanaṁ prati aśvamedhasamāni syuḥ jāgarārthaṁ pragacchataḥ

As many steps as one walks toward Keshava's temple for the sake of the night-vigil, are equal to as many horse-sacrifices.

Verse 50 (padma.6.37.50)

pādayoḥ patitaṁ yāvaddharaṇyāṁ pāṁśu gacchatām tāvadvarṣasahasrāṇi jāgaro vasate divi

As long as the dust falling from the feet of one so walking remains upon the earth, for that many thousands of years the vigil-keeper dwells in heaven.

Verse 51 (padma.6.37.51)

tasmādgṛhātpragaṁtavyaṁ jāgare keśavālaye kalau malavināśāya dvādaśīdvādaśīṣu ca

Therefore, in the Kali age, for the destruction of impurity, one should go from home to Keshava's abode for the night-vigil, on every single Dvadashi.

Verse 52 (padma.6.37.52)

parāpavādasaṁyuktaṁ manaḥ prāsāda varjitam śāstrahīnamagāṁdharvaṁ tathā dīpavivarjitam

[The nine flaws of a vigil]: a mind joined with slander of others, or devoid of joy; without scripture, without music, likewise without a lamp,

Verse 53 (padma.6.37.53)

śaktyopacārarahitamudāsīnaṁ saniṁdanam kaliyuktaṁ viśeṣeṇa jāgaraṁ navadhā matam

without proper service and ritual, indifferent, filled with censure — a night-vigil especially joined with the faults of the Kali age is thus reckoned ninefold.

Verse 54 (padma.6.37.54)

saśāstraṁ jāgaraṁ yacca nṛtyagāṁdharvasaṁyutam savādyaṁ tālāsaṁyuktaṁ sadīpaṁ madhubhiryutam

But a night-vigil joined with scripture, with dance and music, with instruments and rhythm, with lamps, and joined with sweetness,

Verse 55 (padma.6.37.55)

uccāraistu samāyuktaṁ yathoktairbhaktibhāvitaiḥ prasannaṁ tuṣṭijananaṁ saṁmūḍhaṁ lokaraṁjanam

joined with recitations as prescribed, imbued with devotion, joyful, producing satisfaction, absorbing, delighting the people —

Verse 56 (padma.6.37.56)

guṇairdvādaśabhiryuktaṁ jāgaraṁ mādhavapriyam karttavyaṁ tatprayatnena pakṣayoḥ śuklakṛṣṇayoḥ

a night-vigil joined with these twelve qualities is dear to Madhava; it should be performed with diligence, in both the bright and dark fortnights.

Verse 57 (padma.6.37.57)

kiṁ vratairbahubhiścīrṇaistīrthavāsena tasya kim dvādaśīvāsare prāpte na kuryājjāgaraṁ hareḥ

What use are many vows practiced, what use is dwelling at tirthas, if, when the Dvadashi day comes, Hari's night-vigil is not performed?

Verse 58 (padma.6.37.58)

pravāsena tyajedyastu pathisvinno'pi vāḍava jāgaraṁ vāsudevasya dvādaśyāṁ tu same priyaḥ

O brahmin, whoever, even wearied on the road, forsakes it for the sake of travel — Vasudeva's night-vigil is especially dear to me on the Dvadashi.

Verse 59 (padma.6.37.59)

madbhakto na hareḥ kuryājjāgaraṁ pāpamohitaḥ vyarthaṁ matpūjanaṁ tasya matpūjyaṁ yo na pūjayet

My own devotee, deluded by sin, should not fail to perform Hari's night-vigil; futile is his worship of me, who does not worship what is worthy of my worship.

Verse 60 (padma.6.37.60)

na śaivo na ca sauro'sau na śākto gaṇasevakaḥ yo bhuṁkte vāsare viṣṇorjñeyaḥ paśvadhiko hi saḥ

He is neither a Shaivite, nor a Sun-worshipper, nor a Shakta, nor a servant of the ganas — whoever eats on Vishnu's day should be known as worse than a beast.

Verse 61 (padma.6.37.61)

vipriyaṁ ca kṛtaṁ tena duṣṭenaiva ca pāpinā madbhaktibalamāśritya yo bhuṁkte vai harerdine

An unpleasant deed has been done by that wicked, sinful one. Whoever, relying on the strength of devotion to me, eats on Hari's day —

Verse 62 (padma.6.37.62)

sabāhyābhyaṁtaraṁ dehaṁ veṣṭitaṁ pāpakoṭibhiḥ mucyaṁte vāsare viṣṇorye kurvaṁti prajāgaram

his body, within and without, remains wrapped in ten million sins; those who keep continuous vigil on Vishnu's day are freed from these.

Verse 63 (padma.6.37.63)

kūrparaṁ yamadūtānāṁ dattaṁ tena yamasya ca kṛtvā jāgaraṇaṁ viṣṇoraviddhaṁ dvādaśīvratam

Whoever performs the night-vigil of Vishnu on the un-overlapped Dvadashi vow has, as it were, disarmed even Yama's own messengers.

Verse 64 (padma.6.37.64)

svargāpekṣā muniśreṣṭha muktā te naiva saṁśayaḥ vāṁchitaṁ nārakaṁ saukhyaṁ viddhaṁ kṛtvā harerdinam

O best of sages, those free of even the desire for heaven are liberated, without doubt; but performing an overlapped day of Hari brings only the wretched pleasure of hell.

Verse 65 (padma.6.37.65)

nihatāḥ pitarastena devānāṁ vai vadhaḥ kṛtaḥ dattaṁ rājyaṁ tu daityānāṁ kṛtvā viddhaṁ harerdinam

His ancestors are struck down by this, and the gods are, as it were, slain; by performing an overlapped day of Hari, a kingdom is granted to the demons.

Verse 66 (padma.6.37.66)

yo nṛtyati prahṛṣṭātmā kṛtvā vai karatāḍanam gītaṁ kurvanmukhenāpi darśayankautukānbahūn

Whoever dances, joyful of heart, clapping his hands, singing with his own mouth, displaying many wondrous acts,

Verse 67 (padma.6.37.67)

purato vāsudevasya rātrau jāgaraṇe sthitaḥ paṭhankṛṣṇacaritrāṇi raṁjayanvaiṣṇavāngaṇān

before Vasudeva, standing in the night-vigil, reciting Krishna's deeds, delighting the Vaishnava hosts,

Verse 68 (padma.6.37.68)

mukhena kurute vādyaṁ saṁprahṛṣṭatanūruhaḥ darśayanvividhānbhṛtyānsvecchālāpānprakārayan

making music with his own mouth, his hairs standing on end with joy, showing various servants, engaging in whatever talk he pleases —

Verse 69 (padma.6.37.69)

bhāvairetairnaro yastu kurute jāgare hareḥ nimiṣenimiṣe puṇyaṁ tīrthakoṭiphalaṁ smṛtam

whatever man performs Hari's night-vigil with these very dispositions, obtains merit equal to millions of tirthas, moment by moment.

Verse 70 (padma.6.37.70)

anudvignamanā yastu dhūpanīrājanaṁ hareḥ kurute jāgare rātrau saptadvīpādhipo bhavet

Whoever, undisturbed of mind, performs the incense and waving of lights for Hari in the night-vigil, becomes the lord of the seven continents.

Verse 71 (padma.6.37.71)

yāni kāni ca pāpāni brahmahatyāsamāni ca kṛṣṇā ha jāgarāttāni vilayaṁ yāṁti khaṁḍaśaḥ

Whatever sins there are, equal even to the killing of a brahmin, are dissolved into fragments by Krishna's night-vigil.

Verse 72 (padma.6.37.72)

ekataḥ kratavaḥ sarve samāptavaradakṣiṇāḥ ekato devadevasya jāgaraḥ kṛṣṇavallabhaḥ

On one side stand all the sacrifices with their gift-fees completed; on the other stands the night-vigil of the God of gods, dear to Krishna.

Verse 73 (padma.6.37.73)

tatra kāśī puṣkaraṁ ca prayāgaṁ naimiṣaṁ gayā śālagrāmamahākṣetramarbudāraṇyameva ca

There, Kashi, Pushkara, Prayaga, Naimisha, Gaya, the great field of Shaligrama, and the Arbuda forest as well,

Verse 74 (padma.6.37.74)

pauṣkaraṁ mathurā tatra sarvatīrthāni caiva hi yajñā vedāśca catvāro vrajaṁti harijāgaram

Pushkara, Mathura, all the tirthas there, and the four sacrifices and Vedas — all go to Hari's night-vigil.

Verse 75 (padma.6.37.75)

gaṁgā sarasvatī tāpī yamunā ca śatadrukā caṁdrabhāgā vitastā ca nadyaḥ sarvāstu tatra vai

The Ganga, the Sarasvati, the Tapi, the Yamuna, the Shatadru, the Chandrabhaga, the Vitasta — all the rivers there,

Verse 76 (padma.6.37.76)

sarāṁsi ca hradāḥ sarve samudrāḥ sarva eva hi ekādaśyāṁ dvijaśreṣṭha gacchaṁti kṛṣṇajāgaram

all the lakes and pools, all the oceans — O best of the twice-born, on the eleventh all go to Krishna's night-vigil.

Verse 77 (padma.6.37.77)

spṛhaṇīyā hi devānāṁ ye narāḥ kṛṣṇajāgare nṛtyaṁti gītaṁ kurvaṁti vīṇāvādyapraharṣitāḥ

Those men who are at Krishna's night-vigil, dancing, singing, delighted by the sound of the vina, are longed for even by the gods.

Verse 78 (padma.6.37.78)

evaṁ jāgaraṇaṁ kṛtvā saṁpūjya ca mahāharim dvādaśyāṁ pāraṇaṁ kṛtvā svaśaktyā vaiṣṇavaiḥ saha

Having thus performed the night-vigil, and worshipped the great Hari, having broken the fast on the twelfth, according to one's means, together with the Vaishnavas —

Verse 79 (padma.6.37.79)

mahādeva uvāca śṛṇu brahmanpravakṣyāmi dvādaśīmāhātmyamuttamam dvādaśī tu sadā jñeyā putradā mokṣadāyinī

Mahadeva said: Listen, O brahmin, I shall tell the supreme glory of the Dvadashi. The Dvadashi should ever be known as the giver of sons and the giver of liberation.

Verse 80 (padma.6.37.80)

prātaḥ snātvā hariṁ pūjya upavāsaṁ samarpayet ajñānatimirāṁdhasya vratenānena keśava

Having bathed in the morning and worshipped Hari, one should offer up one's fast: 'By this vow, O Keshava, upon me, blinded by the darkness of ignorance,'

Verse 81 (padma.6.37.81)

prasīda sumukho bhūtvā jñānadṛṣṭiprado bhava pāraṇaṁ ca tataḥ kuryādyathāsaṁbhavamagrataḥ

'be gracious, and grant me the eye of knowledge.' Then, as circumstances permit, one should break the fast promptly.

Verse 82 (padma.6.37.82)

ata ūrdhvaṁ yatheṣṭaṁ tu kārayecca yathāvidhi yadā tu dvādaśī svalpā pāraṇena bhaveddivaja

After that, whatever one wishes may be done, according to rite. O twice-born, when the Dvadashi is short for the purpose of breaking the fast,

Verse 83 (padma.6.37.83)

tadā rātrau tu karttavyaṁ pāraṇaṁ muktimicchatā tadā na rātridoṣaḥ syānniṣiddhaṁ na bhavetkvacit

then the breaking of the fast should be done at night, for one who desires liberation; then there is no fault of night, and nothing is forbidden anywhere.

Verse 84 (padma.6.37.84)

yaduktaṁ niśi na snāyānmahāniśi na bhojayet tatpūrvaparayāmābhyāṁ dinavatkarma kārayet

Whatever is said — 'one should not bathe at night, one should not eat at deep night' — that applies to the earlier and later watches; one should act as if it were day.

Verse 85 (padma.6.37.85)

yadā bhavati svalpā tu dvādaśī pāraṇe dine uṣaḥkāle dvayaṁ kuryātprātarmadhyāhnikaṁ tathā

When the Dvadashi is short on the day of breaking the fast, both rites — the morning and the midday — should be performed together at dawn.

Verse 86 (padma.6.37.86)

dvādaśī sādhitā yena nareṇa bhuvi sarvadā tasya puṇyamahaṁ vaktuṁ na samartho viśeṣataḥ

The merit of one by whom the Dvadashi has been duly accomplished upon this earth, I am unable, especially, to fully describe.

Verse 87 (padma.6.37.87)

sādhayitvākhilānkāmānprāpnuyuśca mahājanāḥ aṁbarīṣādayaḥ sarve ye bhaktā bhuvi viśrutāḥ

Having accomplished all their desires, great persons attain it — all those devotees renowned upon this earth, Ambarisha and the rest.

Verse 88 (padma.6.37.88)

dvādaśīṁ sādhayitvā tu te gatā viṣṇusadmani satyaṁ satyaṁ punaḥ satyaṁ yaduktaṁ tu mayā tava

Having accomplished the Dvadashi, they went to Vishnu's own abode. True, true, and true again is what I have told you —

Verse 89 (padma.6.37.89)

nāsti viṣṇusamo devo na tithirdvādaśīsamā atra dattaṁ ca bhuktaṁ ca tathā pūjādikaṁ ca yat

there is no god equal to Vishnu, no tithi equal to the Dvadashi. Whatever is given here, whatever is eaten, and whatever worship is performed,

Verse 90 (padma.6.37.90)

tatsarvaṁ pūrṇatāṁ yāti pūjite mādhave sati kiṁ punarbahunoktena bhaktānāṁ vallabho hariḥ

all of it attains completeness, when Madhava is duly worshipped. What need is there to say more — Hari is the beloved of his devotees;

Verse 91 (padma.6.37.91)

pradadātyakhilānkāmānyāvadābhūtasaṁplavam dvādaśyāṁ caiva yaddattaṁ tatsarvaṁ saphalaṁ bhavet

he grants them all their desires, until the very dissolution of all beings. And whatever is given on the Dvadashi, all of it bears fruit.

Verse 92 (padma.6.37.92)

kurukṣetreṣu yaddattaṁ niṣphalaṁ naiva jāyate tadvacca dvādaśīdattaṁ bhaveddevarṣisattama

Whatever is given at Kurukshetra never becomes fruitless; likewise, whatever is given on the Dvadashi becomes so, O best of divine sages.
