Uttara Khanda · Chapter 38
The Origin of Ekadashi and the Slaying of Mura
Verse 1 (padma.6.38.1)
mahādeva uvāca ekasminsamaye putra gato'haṁ viṣṇusannidhau tatra pṛṣṭaṁ mayā pūrvaṁ māhātmyaṁ dvādaśībhavam
Mahadeva said: O son, once upon a time I went into the presence of Vishnu; there I earlier asked about the glory connected with the Dvadashi.
Verse 2 (padma.6.38.2)
nārada uvāca kīdṛśī syānmahādeva mahādvādaśikā parā tasyā vrate phalaṁ kīdṛgvada sarveśvara prabho
Narada said: What is that supreme great Dvadashi, O Mahadeva? What is the fruit of its vow, O Lord of all, tell me.
Verse 3 (padma.6.38.3)
śiva uvāca iyamekādaśī brahmanmahāpuṇyaphalapradā ṛkṣayogaiśca saṁyuktā karttavyā munisattamaiḥ
Shiva said: O brahmin, this Ekadashi is a bestower of great meritorious fruit; it should be performed by the best of sages, joined with the appropriate star-conjunctions.
Verse 4 (padma.6.38.4)
jayā ca vijayā caiva jayaṁtī pāpanāśinī sarvapāpaharāścaitāḥ karttavyāḥ phalakāṁkṣibhiḥ
Jaya, Vijaya, and Jayanti — these destroy sin and remove all sins; those desiring fruit should perform them.
Verse 5 (padma.6.38.5)
ekādaśyāṁ yadā ṛkṣaṁ śuklapakṣe punarvasuḥ nāmnā sā ca jayā khyātā tithīnāmuttamā tithiḥ
When on the Ekadashi of the bright fortnight the star is Punarvasu, that is famed by the name Jaya, the best of tithis.
Verse 6 (padma.6.38.6)
tāmupoṣya naraḥ pāpānmucyate nātra saṁśayaḥ yadā ca śukladvādaśyāṁ nakṣatraṁ śravaṇaṁ bhavet
By fasting on it, a man is freed from sins, there is no doubt here. And when on the bright Dvadashi the star is Shravana,
Verse 7 (padma.6.38.7)
vijayā sā samākhyātā tithīnāmuttamā tithiḥ sahasraguṇitaṁ dānaṁ yasyāṁ vai vipra bhojanam
that is known by the name Vijaya, the best of tithis. Gifts given, and feeding of brahmins, on that day bear a thousandfold fruit.
Verse 8 (padma.6.38.8)
homastathopavāsaśca sahasrādhiphalapradaḥ yadā ca śukladvādaśyāṁ prājāpatyaṁ hi jāyate
Fire-oblation and fasting bestow fruit exceeding a thousandfold. And when on the bright Dvadashi the Prajapatya (Rohini) star occurs,
Verse 9 (padma.6.38.9)
jayaṁtī nāma sā proktā sarvapāpaharā tithiḥ saptajanmakṛtaṁ pāpaṁ svalpaṁ vā yadi vā bahu
that is called by the name Jayanti, a tithi that removes all sins. Whatever sin has been committed over seven births, whether small or great,
Verse 10 (padma.6.38.10)
prakṣālayati goviṁdastasyāmabhyarcito dhruvam yadā vai śukladvādaśyāṁ puṣyaṁ bhavati karhicit
Govinda, worshipped on that day, surely washes it away. And when on the bright Dvadashi the Pushya star occurs at some time,
Verse 11 (padma.6.38.11)
tadā tu sā mahāpuṇyā bhavitā pāpanāśinī yo dadāti tilaprasthaṁ nityaṁ saṁvatsaraṁ prati
then that becomes exceedingly meritorious, destructive of sin. Whoever gives, every year continually, a prastha-measure of sesame,
Verse 12 (padma.6.38.12)
upavāsaṁ ca yastasyāṁ karotyetatsamaṁ smṛtam tasyāṁ jagatpatirdevastuṣṭaḥ sarveśvaro hariḥ
and whoever fasts on that day, is reckoned as equal to it. On that day, Hari, the Lord of the universe, the Lord of all, well pleased,
Verse 13 (padma.6.38.13)
pratyakṣatāṁ prayātyeva tatrānaṁtaphalaṁ smṛtam sagareṇa kakutsthena nahuṣeṇa ca sādhitaḥ
appears in person; on it an endless fruit is declared. Sagara, Kakutstha, and Nahusha,
Verse 14 (padma.6.38.14)
tasyāmārādhitaḥ kṛṣṇo dattavānakhilaṁ bhuvi vācikānmānasādvāpi kāyajācca viśeṣataḥ
having worshipped Krishna on it, obtained everything on earth. From sin committed by speech, by mind, or especially by body,
Verse 15 (padma.6.38.15)
saptajanmakṛtātpāpānmucyate nātra saṁśayaḥ tāmekāṁ samupoṣyātha puṇyanakṣatrasaṁyutām
a man is freed from sin committed over seven births — there is no doubt. Having fasted on that single Ekadashi, joined with the meritorious star,
Verse 16 (padma.6.38.16)
ekādaśīsahasrasya phalaṁ prāpnoti mānavaḥ snānaṁ dānaṁ japo homaḥ svādhyāyo devatārcanam
a man obtains the fruit of a thousand Ekadashis. Bathing, giving, recitation, fire-oblation, self-study, worship of the gods —
Verse 17 (padma.6.38.17)
yattasyāṁ kriyate kiṁcittadakṣayaphalaṁ smṛtam tasmādeṣā prakartavyā yatnena phalakāṁkṣibhiḥ
whatever, even a little, is done on it, is deemed to bear imperishable fruit. Therefore, those desiring fruit should perform it with diligence.
Verse 18 (padma.6.38.18)
paṁcamenāśvamedhena yadi snāto yudhiṣṭhiraḥ paryapṛcchata dharmātmā kṛṣṇaṁ yadukulodvaham
Having bathed after the fifth horse-sacrifice, the righteous Yudhishthira asked Krishna, the foremost of the Yadu clan —
Verse 19 (padma.6.38.19)
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca upavāsasya naktasya tvekabhuktasya me prabho kiṁ puṇyaṁ kiṁ phalaṁ tasya brūhi sarvaṁ janārdana
Yudhishthira said: O Lord, tell me fully the merit and fruit of fasting, of the nakta meal, and of the single meal, O Janardana.
Verse 20 (padma.6.38.20)
śrībhagavānuvāca hemaṁte caiva saṁprāpte māse mārge ca śobhane kṛṣṇapakṣe ca yā pārtha dvādaśī tāmupoṣayet daśamyāṁ caikabhaktaśca śuddhacitto dṛḍhavrataḥ
Sri Bhagavan said: In the hemanta season, in the auspicious month of Margashirsha, O Partha, one should fast on the Dvadashi of the dark fortnight. Eating once on the Dashami, of pure mind and firm in the vow,
Verse 21 (padma.6.38.21)
naktaṁ caiva tathā jñātvā daśamyāṁ niyataḥ sadā divasasyāṣṭame bhāge maṁdībhūte divākare
one should know the night-meal properly and remain disciplined on the Dashami always. At the eighth part of the day, when the sun grows faint,
Verse 22 (padma.6.38.22)
naktaṁ ca tadvijānīyānna naktaṁ niśibhojanam nakṣatradarśanānnaktaṁ gṛhasthasya vidhīyate
that should be known as nakta — this is not eating at deep night. Up until the sighting of the stars is the prescribed nakta-time for the householder.
Verse 23 (padma.6.38.23)
yaterdināṣṭame bhāge rātrau tasya niṣedhanam tataḥ prabhātasamaye kṛtvā ca niyamaṁ vratī
For the ascetic, only up to the eighth part of the day; at night it is forbidden for him. Then, at the time of dawn, the vow-keeper, having taken up the discipline,
Verse 24 (padma.6.38.24)
madhyāhne ca tathā pārtha snānaṁ śuciḥ samācaret adhamaṁ kūpake snānaṁ vāpyāṁ snānaṁ ca madhyamam
O Partha, should bathe purely at midday. Bathing in a well is inferior, bathing in a step-well is middling,
Verse 25 (padma.6.38.25)
taḍāge cottamaṁ snānaṁ nadyāṁ snānaṁ tataḥ param pīḍyaṁte jaṁtavo yatra jalamadhye vyavasthite
bathing in a pond is excellent, bathing in a river is even higher than that. Where creatures situated within the water are troubled,
Verse 26 (padma.6.38.26)
tatra snāne kṛte pārtha pāpaṁ puṇyaṁ samaṁ bhavet gṛhe caivottamaṁ snānaṁ jalaṁ caiva viśodhayet
bathing there, O Partha, makes sin and merit equal. Bathing at home itself is best; the water should be purified.
Verse 27 (padma.6.38.27)
tasmāttu pāṁḍavaśreṣṭha gṛhe snānaṁ samācaret aśvakrāṁte rathakrāṁte viṣṇukrāṁte vasuṁdhare
Therefore, O best of the Pandavas, one should bathe at home — 'O earth traversed by the horse, traversed by the chariot, traversed by Vishnu!
Verse 28 (padma.6.38.28)
mṛttike hara me pāpaṁ yanmayā pūrvasaṁcitam krodhalobhau parityajya caikacitto dṛḍhavrataḥ
'O earth, take away the sin I have accumulated before.' Having abandoned anger and greed, of one-pointed mind and firm in vow,
Verse 29 (padma.6.38.29)
nālāpetāṁtyajaṁ caiva tathā pākhaṁḍino narān mithyāvādaratāṁścaiva tathā brāhmaṇaniṁdakān
one should not converse with an outcaste, nor with hypocrites; nor with those given to false speech, nor with reviler of brahmins.
Verse 30 (padma.6.38.30)
anyāṁścaiva durācārānagamyāgamaneratān paradravyāpahārāṁśca paradārābhigāminaḥ
nor with other men of bad conduct, nor with those given to forbidden unions; nor with stealers of others' wealth, nor with adulterers.
Verse 31 (padma.6.38.31)
keśavaṁ pūjayitvā tu naivedyaṁ tatra kārayet dīpaṁ dadyādgṛhe tatra bhaktiyuktena cetasā
Having worshipped Keshava, a food-offering should be made there; a lamp should be lit at home with a devoted mind.
Verse 32 (padma.6.38.32)
taddine varjayetpārtha nidrāṁ caiva tu maithunam dharmaśāstravinodena dinaṁ sarvaṁ nivārayet
On that day, O Partha, sleep and sexual union should be given up; the whole day should be passed in discussion of the scriptures of dharma.
Verse 33 (padma.6.38.33)
rātrau jāgaraṇaṁ kṛtvā bhaktiyukto nṛpottama viprebhyo dakṣiṇāṁ dadyātpraṇipatya kṣamāpayet
Having kept a night-vigil, filled with devotion, O best of kings, one should give gifts to brahmins and, prostrating, ask for forgiveness.
Verse 34 (padma.6.38.34)
yathā kṛṣṇā tathā śuklā vidhinaivaṁ prakārayet ekādaśīṁ dvijaḥ pārtha vibhedaṁ naiva kārayet
As is the procedure for the dark fortnight, so too should the bright fortnight's be performed. O Partha, a twice-born should make no distinction regarding the Ekadashi.
Verse 35 (padma.6.38.35)
evaṁ hi kurute yastu śṛṇu tasya hi yatphalam śaṁkhoddhāre naraḥ snātvā dṛṣṭvā devaṁ gadādharam
Whoever does thus, listen to what fruit he obtains. Bathing at Shankhoddhara, having beheld the god Gadadhara,
Verse 36 (padma.6.38.36)
ekādaśyupavāsasya kalāṁ nārhati ṣoḍaśīm saṁkrāṁtiṣu caturlakṣaṁ yo dadāti nṛpottama
a man is not equal even to the sixteenth part of the Ekadashi fast. O best of kings, whoever gives a gift of four hundred thousand at the solstices,
Verse 37 (padma.6.38.37)
ekādaśyupavāsasya kalāṁ nārhati ṣoḍaśīm prabhāsakṣetre yatpuṇyaṁ grahaṇe caṁdra sūryayoḥ
is not equal even to the sixteenth part of the Ekadashi fast. Whatever merit exists at the Prabhasa field, whatever merit exists in a lunar or solar eclipse,
Verse 38 (padma.6.38.38)
tatphalaṁ jāyate nūnamekādaśyupavāsinaḥ kedāre codakaṁ pītvā punarjanma na vidyate
that fruit is indeed obtained by the Ekadashi-observer. Having drunk the water at Kedara, there is no rebirth,
Verse 39 (padma.6.38.39)
tathā caikādaśī pārtha garbhavāsakṣayaṁkarī aśvamedhasya yajñasya pṛthivyāṁ yatphalaṁ labhet
similarly, O Partha, the Ekadashi destroys residence in the womb. Whatever fruit is obtained on earth from the horse-sacrifice,
Verse 40 (padma.6.38.40)
tasmācchataguṇaṁ puṇyamekādaśyupavāsinaḥ tapasvino gṛhe yasya bhuṁjate ca dvijottamāḥ
a hundredfold that merit is obtained by the Ekadashi-observer. In whose house ascetics and the finest twice-borns eat,
Verse 41 (padma.6.38.41)
tatphalaṁ jāyate nūnamekādaśyupavāsinaḥ gosahasreṇa yatpuṇyaṁ datvā vedāṁtapārage
that fruit is surely obtained by the Ekadashi-observer. Whatever merit is obtained from giving a thousand cows to one versed in Vedanta,
Verse 42 (padma.6.38.42)
tasmācchataguṇaṁ puṇyamekādaśyupavāsinaḥ yeṣāṁ dehe trayo devā brahmaviṣṇumaheśvarāḥ
a hundredfold that merit is obtained by the Ekadashi-observer. In whose body the three gods — Brahma, Vishnu, Maheshvara —
Verse 43 (padma.6.38.43)
vasaṁti teṣāṁ te tulyā ekādaśyupavāsinaḥ te narāḥ puṇyakarmāṇo ye bhaktā haripūjakāḥ
reside — they are equal to the Ekadashi-observers. Those meritorious men who are devotees and worshippers of Hari,
Verse 44 (padma.6.38.44)
ekādaśīvratasyāpi puṇyasaṁkhyā na vidyate etatpuṇyaṁ bhavettasya yatsurairapi durllabham
even the merit-count of the Ekadashi vow does not encompass them (that is, it is beyond measure). This is that merit which is difficult even for the gods to attain.
Verse 45 (padma.6.38.45)
etasmādarddhapuṇyaṁ tu prāpyate naktabhojanāt naktasyārddhaṁ bhavetpuṇyamekabhaktena dehinām
Half of this merit is obtained from the nakta meal. Half of the nakta's merit is what is obtained by a being who eats a single meal.
Verse 46 (padma.6.38.46)
tāvadgarjaṁti tīrthāni dānāni niyamāni ca yāvannopoṣayejjaṁturvāsaraṁ viṣṇuvallabham
As long as a being does not fast on the day dear to Vishnu, tirthas, gifts, and observances remain merely as noise, that is, unavailing.
Verse 47 (padma.6.38.47)
tasmāttvaṁ pāṁḍavaśreṣṭha vratametatsamācara puṇyasaṁkhyāṁ na jānāmi yattvaṁ pṛcchasi pāṁḍava
Therefore, O best of the Pandavas, practice this vow. O Pandava, what you ask, I do not know its full measure of merit,
Verse 48 (padma.6.38.48)
etaddhi kathitaṁ pārtha yadgopyaṁ vratamuttamam ekādaśīsamaṁ nāsti kṛtvā yajñasahasrakam
this alone, O Partha, has been told to you — this is a secret and excellent vow. There is nothing equal to the Ekadashi, even by performing a thousand sacrifices.
Verse 49 (padma.6.38.49)
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca utpannā sā kathaṁ deva puṇyā caikādaśī tithiḥ kathaṁ pavitrā viśve'sminkathaṁ vai devatāpriyā
Yudhishthira said: O god, how did that meritorious Ekadashi tithi arise? How is it pure in this universe, how is it dear to the gods?
Verse 50 (padma.6.38.50)
śrībhagavānuvāca purā kṛtayuge pārtha muranāmeti dānavaḥ atyadbhuto mahāraudra sarvadevabhayaṁkaraḥ
Sri Bhagavan said: In ancient Satya Yuga, O Partha, there was a demon named Mura, exceedingly wondrous, exceedingly terrible, striking fear in all the gods.
Verse 51 (padma.6.38.51)
iṁdro'pi nirjitastena sarvadevāstathā nṛpa mahāsureṇa tenaiva mṛtyunā ca durātmanā
O king, Indra too was defeated by him, and so were all the gods, by that same evil, death-like great demon.
Verse 52 (padma.6.38.52)
svargānnirākṛtāstena vicaraṁti mahītale saśaṁkā bhayabhītāśca sarve gatvā maheśvaram
Driven out from heaven, they began to wander upon the earth; frightened and afraid, all of them went to Maheshvara.
Verse 53 (padma.6.38.53)
iṁdreṇa kathitaṁ sarvamīśvarasyāpi cāgrataḥ svargalokaparibhraṣṭā vicaraṁti mahītale
Indra told everything before Ishvara — 'We, fallen from the heavenly world, are wandering upon the earth,
Verse 54 (padma.6.38.54)
martyeṣu saṁsthitā devā na śobhaṁte maheśvara upāyaṁ brūhi me deva hyamarā yāṁti kāṁ gatim
'gods dwelling in the mortal world do not shine, O Maheshvara. Tell me some remedy, where shall we, the immortals, find refuge?'
Verse 55 (padma.6.38.55)
mahādeva uvāca devarājasuraśreṣṭhayatrāstegaruḍadhvajaḥ śaraṇyaśca jagannāthaḥ paritrātā parāyaṇaḥ
Mahadeva said: O king of gods, best of the immortals, where the one bearing the Garuda-banner resides, who is compassionate to those who take refuge, the Lord of the universe, the protector, the ultimate refuge —
Verse 56 (padma.6.38.56)
tatra gaccha suraśreṣṭha sa vo rakṣāṁ vidhāsyati īśvarasya vacaḥ śrutvā devarājo mahāmatiḥ
go there, O best of the immortals; he will protect you. Having heard Ishvara's words, the wise king of the gods,
Verse 57 (padma.6.38.57)
tridaśaiḥ sahito yatra gatastatra yudhiṣṭhira jalamadhye prasuptaṁ taṁ dṛṣṭvā devaṁ gadādharam
together with the host of the thirty gods, went there, O Yudhishthira; and having seen the god Gadadhara asleep in the midst of the waters,
Verse 58 (padma.6.38.58)
kṛtāṁjalipuṭo bhūtvā iṁdraḥ stotramudīrayat
Indra, joining his palms, uttered a hymn of praise.
Verse 59 (padma.6.38.59)
iṁdra uvāca oṁnamo devadeveśa devadānavavaṁdita daityāre puṁḍarīkākṣa trāhi no madhusūdana
Indra said: Om, salutation to the God of gods, worshipped by gods and demons, enemy of the daityas, lotus-eyed one! O Madhusudana, protect us.

Tritiya, Ashtami, Navami, Chaturdashi — among these, especially the Ekadashi, this tithi dear to Hari, is more meritorious than all tirthas — it is true, it is truly true, without doubt.
Verse 106 (padma.6.38.106)

O Partha, the Ekadashi of both fortnights is equally auspicious; no distinction should be made between the bright and the dark.
Verse 109 (padma.6.38.109)
vibhedo naiva karttavyaḥ samastavratakāribhiḥ divā vā yadi vā rātrau śṛṇoti bhaktitatparaḥ

tithirekā bhavetsarvā pakṣayorubhayorapi ubhayaikādaśī svalpā hyaṁte caiva trayodaśī
the tithi becomes one and the same across both fortnights. When both Ekadashis are short, at the end comes the Trayodashi,
Verse 111 (padma.6.38.111)
madhye tu dvādaśī pūrṇā trispṛśā sā haripriyā ekāmupoṣayettāṁ vai sahasraikādaśīphalam
in the middle comes the full Dvadashi — that is Trisprisha, dear to Hari. Fasting on that single day yields the fruit of a thousand Ekadashis.
Verse 112 (padma.6.38.112)
sahasraguṇitaṁ hyevaṁ dvādaśyāṁ pāraṇe kṛte aṣṭamyekādaśī ṣaṣṭhī tṛtīyā ca caturdaśī
Thus a thousandfold fruit is obtained when the fast is broken on the Dvadashi. Ashtami, Ekadashi, Shashthi, Tritiya, and Chaturdashi —
Verse 113 (padma.6.38.113)
pūrvaviddhā na kartavyā paraviddhāmupoṣayet ekādaśī hyahorātraṁ prabhāte ghaṭikā bhavet
the earlier-overlapped tithi should not be observed; the later-overlapped one should be fasted upon. Should the Ekadashi span a full day-night, and touch even a ghatika into the dawn,
Verse 114 (padma.6.38.114)
sā tithiḥ parihartavyā upoṣyā dvādaśīyutā evaṁvidhā mayā proktā pakṣayorubhayorapi
that tithi should be set aside; the one joined with Dvadashi should be fasted upon. Thus have I explained this for both fortnights.
Verse 115 (padma.6.38.115)
One should fast upon the Ekadashi, without doubt. They go to that Vaishnava abode, where the one bearing the Garuda-banner resides.
Verse 116 (padma.6.38.116)
