Uttara Khanda · Chapter 41
Putrada Ekadashi of Pausha Shukla
Verse 1 (padma.6.41.1)
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca- kathitā vai tvayā kṛṣṇa saphalaikādaśī śubhā kathayasva prasādena śuklapakṣasya yā bhavet
Yudhishthira said: You have told me, O Krishna, of the auspicious Saphala Ekadashi. Kindly tell me now, by your grace, of the Ekadashi that falls in the bright fortnight.
Verse 2 (padma.6.41.2)
kinnāma ko vidhistasyāḥ ko devastatra pūjyate kasmai tuṣṭo hṛṣīkeśastvameva puruṣottamaḥ
What is its name, what is its rite, which deity is worshipped there, and by whom pleased does Hrishikesha - you yourself, Purushottama - grant his boon?
Verse 3 (padma.6.41.3)
śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca- śṛṇu rājanpravakṣyāmi śuklā pauṣasya yā bhavet kathayāmi mahārāja lokānāṁ hitakāmyayā
Sri Krishna said: Listen, O king, I shall describe the Ekadashi of the bright fortnight of Pausha. O great king, I speak this for the welfare of all people.
Verse 4 (padma.6.41.4)
pūrveṇa vidhinā rājankarttavyaiṣā prayatnataḥ putradā nāma nāmnā sā sarvapāpaharā parā
This should be observed with the same careful rite told before. It is named Putrada - the supreme Ekadashi that removes all sins.
Verse 5 (padma.6.41.5)
nārāyaṇo'dhidevo'syā kāmadaḥ siddhidāyakaḥ nātaḥ paratarā kācittrailokye sacarācare
Narayana is its presiding deity, granter of desires and bestower of accomplishment. In the three worlds of moving and unmoving beings, none surpasses this Ekadashi.
Verse 6 (padma.6.41.6)
vidyāvaṁtaṁ yaśasvaṁtaṁ karoti ca naraṁ hariḥ śṛṇu rājanpravakṣyāmi kathāṁ pāpaharāṁ parām
Hari makes a man learned and renowned. Listen, O king, I shall now tell the supreme, sin-destroying tale.
Verse 7 (padma.6.41.7)
bhadrāvatyāṁ purā hyāsītpuryāṁ rājā suketumān tasya rājñastathārājñī caṁpakā nāma varttate
Long ago, in the city of Bhadravati, there lived a king named Suketuman. His queen was named Champaka.
Verse 8 (padma.6.41.8)
putrahīnena rājñā ca kāle nīto manorathaiḥ naivātmajaṁ nṛpo lebhe vaṁśakarttārameva ca
Childless, the king let time pass amid many longings, but he obtained neither a son nor any heir to carry his lineage forward.
Verse 9 (padma.6.41.9)
tenaiva rājñā dharmeṇa ciṁtitaṁ bahukālataḥ kiṁ karomi kva gacchāmi sutaprāptiḥ kathaṁ bhavet
That righteous king pondered long: what should I do, where should I go, how shall I obtain a son?
Verse 10 (padma.6.41.10)
na rāṣṭre na pure saukhyaṁ lebhe rājā suketumān sādhvya svakāṁtayā sārddhaṁ pratyahaṁ duḥkhito'bhavat
King Suketuman found no happiness, neither in his kingdom nor in his city. Together with his virtuous wife he grew sorrowful with every passing day.
Verse 11 (padma.6.41.11)
tāvubhau daṁpatī nityaṁ ciṁtāśokaparāyaṇau pitaro'sya jalaṁ dattaṁ kavoṣṇamupabhuṁjate
That royal couple remained constantly sunk in grief and anxiety; even their ancestors received only lukewarm water in offering.
Verse 12 (padma.6.41.12)
rājñaḥ paścānna paśyāmo yo'smānsaṁtarpayiṣyati ityevaṁ saṁsmaraṁto'sya duḥkhitāḥ pitaro'bhavan
Remembering, 'After this king, we see no one left to satisfy us,' his ancestors too grew sorrowful.
Verse 13 (padma.6.41.13)
na bāṁdhavā na mitrāṇi nāmātyāḥ suhṛdastathā rocayaṁtyasya bhūpasya na gajāśvāḥ padātayaḥ
Neither kinsmen nor friends, neither ministers nor well-wishers, neither elephants and horses nor foot-soldiers could bring that king any joy.
Verse 14 (padma.6.41.14)
nairāśyaṁ bhūpatestasya nityaṁ manasi varttate narasya putrahīnasya nāsti vai janmanaḥ phalam
Despair dwelt constantly in that king's mind, for the birth of a man without a son bears no fruit.
Verse 15 (padma.6.41.15)
aputrasya gṛhaṁ śūnyaṁ hṛdayaṁ duḥkhitaṁ sadā pitṛdevamanuṣyāṇāṁ nānṛṇatvaṁ sutaṁ vinā
The home of the sonless is empty, his heart forever sorrowful; without a son, one is never freed from the debt owed to ancestors, gods, and men.
Verse 16 (padma.6.41.16)
tasmātsarvaprayatnena sutamutpādayennaraḥ iha loke yaśasteṣāṁ paraloke śubhā gatiḥ
Therefore a man should strive by every means to beget a son, for this brings fame in this world and an auspicious path in the next.
Verse 17 (padma.6.41.17)
yeṣāṁ tu puṇyakartṝṇāṁ putrajanmagṛhe bhavet āyurārogyasaṁpattisteṣāṁ gehe pravartate
In the homes of those meritorious souls where a son is born, longevity, health, and prosperity ever abide.
Verse 18 (padma.6.41.18)
putrajanma gṛhe yeṣāṁ lokānāṁ puṇyakāriṇām puṇyaṁ vinā na ca prāptirviṣṇubhaktiṁ vinā nṛpa
O king, in whose homes a son is born - that comes only through merit, and merit comes only through devotion to Vishnu.
Verse 19 (padma.6.41.19)
putrāśca saṁpado vāpi niścayāditi me matiḥ evaṁ viciṁtyamāno'sau na śarma labhate nṛpaḥ
'Whether sons or riches, both come only through destiny' - thinking so, still that king found no peace.
Verse 20 (padma.6.41.20)
pratyūṣe ciṁtayadrājā niśīthe ciṁtayattataḥ svayamātmavināśaṁ ca ciṁtayāmāsa ketumān
The king brooded at dawn and again at midnight; at last Suketuman even contemplated ending his own life.
Verse 21 (padma.6.41.21)
ātmaghāte durgatiṁ ca ciṁtayitvā tadā nṛpaḥ dṛṣṭvātmadehaṁ patitamaputratvaṁ tathaiva ca
Then, reflecting on the wretched fate that follows self-destruction, and beholding his own fallen body and his sonlessness,
Verse 22 (padma.6.41.22)
punarvicāryātmabuddhyā ātmano hitakāraṇam aśvārūḍhastato rājā jagāma gahanaṁ vanam
reconsidering once more with his own wisdom what was truly good for him, the king mounted his horse and rode into the dense forest.
Verse 23 (padma.6.41.23)
purohitādayaḥ sarve na jānaṁti gataṁ nṛpam gaṁbhīre vipine rājā mṛgapakṣiniṣevite
None among the priests or others knew that the king had gone. The king entered that deep forest, thronged with beasts and birds.
Verse 24 (padma.6.41.24)
vicacāra tadā rājā vanavṛkṣānvilokayan vaṭānaśvatthabilvāṁśca kharjūrānpanasāṁstathā
Wandering in the forest, the king gazed upon its trees - banyan, peepal, bilva, date-palm and jackfruit,
Verse 25 (padma.6.41.25)
bakulānsaptaparṇāṁśca tiṁdukāṁstilakānapi śālāṁstālāṁstamālāṁśca dadarśa saralānnṛpaḥ
bakula, saptaparna, tinduka and tilaka trees; the king also beheld sala, tala, tamala and sarala trees.
Verse 26 (padma.6.41.26)
iṁgudī kakubhāṁścaiva śleṣmātakanagāṁstathā śallakānkaramardāṁśca pāṭalānbadarānapi
There too were ingudi, kakubha and shleshmataka trees; he saw shallaki, karamarda, patala and badara trees as well.
Verse 27 (padma.6.41.27)
aśokāṁśca palāśāṁśca śṛgālāñśaśakānapi vanamārjāramahiṣānśallakāṁścamarānapi
He saw ashoka and palasha trees, jackals and hares too, along with wild cats, buffaloes, porcupines and yaks.
Verse 28 (padma.6.41.28)
dadarśa bhujagānrājā valmīkādarddhaniḥsṛtān tathā vanagajān mattān kalabhaiḥ saha saṁgatān
The king saw serpents half-emerged from anthills, and wild elephants in rut roaming together with their young.
Verse 29 (padma.6.41.29)
yūthapāṁśca caturdaṁtānkariṇīyūthamadhyagān tāndṛṣṭvā ciṁtayāmāsa ātmanaḥ sa gajānnṛpaḥ
Seeing four-tusked herd-leaders moving amid herds of female elephants, the king was reminded of his own royal elephants.
Verse 30 (padma.6.41.30)
teṣāṁ sa vicaranmadhye rājā śobhāmavāpa ha mahadāścaryasaṁyuktaṁ dadṛśe vipinaṁ nṛpaḥ
Wandering among them, the king took on a strange radiance; he beheld a forest filled with great wonder.
Verse 31 (padma.6.41.31)
mārge śivārutānśṛṇvannulūkavirutaṁ tathā tāṁstānṛkṣamṛgānpaśyanbabhrāma vanamadhyataḥ
On the path, hearing the cries of jackals and the hoot of owls, and seeing bears and deer here and there, the king wandered through the forest's midst.
Verse 32 (padma.6.41.32)
evaṁ dadarśa gahanaṁ nṛpo madhyagate ravau kṣuttṛḍbhyāṁ pīḍito rājā itaścetaśca dhāvati
Thus, as the sun reached its zenith, the king went on seeing the dense forest; tormented by hunger and thirst, he ran here and there.
Verse 33 (padma.6.41.33)
nṛpatiściṁtayāmāsa saṁśuṣkagalakaṁdharaḥ mayā tu kiṁ kṛtaṁ karma prāptaṁ duḥkhaṁ yadīdṛśam
With his throat and palate utterly parched, the king thought: what deed have I done, that such suffering should befall me?
Verse 34 (padma.6.41.34)
mayā vai toṣitā devā yajñaiḥ pūjābhireva ca tathaiva brāhmaṇā dānaistoṣitā miṣṭabhojanaiḥ
I have satisfied the gods with sacrifices and worship, and likewise satisfied the brahmins with gifts and sweet food.
Verse 35 (padma.6.41.35)
prajāścaiva sadā kālaṁ putravatpālitā bhṛśam kasmādduḥkhaṁ mayā prāptamīdṛśaṁ dāruṇaṁ mahat
I have always cherished my subjects as my own children - then why has such terrible, great suffering come upon me?
Verse 36 (padma.6.41.36)
iti ciṁtāparo rājā jagāmaivāgrato vanam sukṛtasya prabhāvena saro dṛṣṭamanuttamam
Thus lost in thought, the king went further into the forest; by the power of his own merit, he beheld a lake of surpassing beauty.
Verse 37 (padma.6.41.37)
mīnasaṁsparśamānaṁ ca padmaiścāparaśobhitam kāraṁḍaiścakravākaiśca rājahaṁsaiśca śobhitam
That lake stirred with the touch of fish and was adorned with lotuses; it was graced too with karandava birds, chakravakas, and royal swans.
Verse 38 (padma.6.41.38)
makarairbahubhirmatsyairanyairjalacarairyutam samīpe sarasastasya munīnāmāśramānbahūn
It teemed with many crocodiles, fish, and other water-creatures; near that lake the king saw the hermitages of many sages.
Verse 39 (padma.6.41.39)
dadarśa rājā lakṣmīvānśakunaiḥ śubhaśaṁsibhiḥ dakṣiṇaṁ prāsphurannetramatha savyetaraḥ karaḥ
The fortunate king saw birds bearing auspicious omens; his right eye and his right hand began to throb.
Verse 40 (padma.6.41.40)
prāsphurannṛpatestasya kathayañśobhanaṁ phalam tasya tīre munīndṛṣṭvā kurvāṇannaigamaṁ japam
That throbbing foretold a favorable outcome for the king; on the shore of that lake he saw sages engaged in Vedic recitation.
Verse 41 (padma.6.41.41)
harṣeṇa mahatāviṣṭo babhūva nṛpanaṁdanaḥ avatīrya hayāttasmānmunīnāmagrataḥ sthitaḥ
The king was overcome with great joy; dismounting from his horse, he came and stood before those sages.
Verse 42 (padma.6.41.42)
pṛthakpṛthagvavaṁde'sau munīṁstānśaṁsitavratān kṛtāṁjalipuṭo bhūtvā daṁḍavacca punaḥ punaḥ
With joined palms he bowed again and again, prostrating like a rod, saluting each of those sages of accomplished vows in turn.
Verse 43 (padma.6.41.43)
pratyūcuste'pi munayaḥ prasannā nṛpate vayam rājovāca- ke bhavaṁto'tra kathyaṁtāṁ kā cākhyā bhavatāmapi kimarthaṁ saṁgatā yūyaṁ satyaṁ vadata me'grataḥ
Those sages, pleased, replied: 'We are content, O king.' The king said: 'Who are you here - tell me, and what is your name? Why have you gathered here? Speak the truth before me.'
Verse 44 (padma.6.41.44)
munaya ūcuḥ- viśvedevā vayaṁ rājansnānārthamiha cāgatāḥ māgho nikaṭamāyāta etasmātpaṁcame'hani
The sages said: 'O king, we are the Vishvedevas, come here to bathe. Five days from now, the month of Magha draws near.'
Verse 45 (padma.6.41.45)
adya caikādaśī rājanputradā nāma nāmataḥ putraṁ dadātyasau viṣṇuḥ putradā kāriṇāṁ nṛṇām
'This very day, O king, is the Ekadashi named Putrada; to those who observe it, Vishnu grants a son.'
Verse 46 (padma.6.41.46)
rājovāca- eṣa vai saṁśayo mahyaṁ putrasyotpādane mahān yadi tuṣṭā bhavaṁto vai putraṁ me dīyatāṁ tadā
The king said: 'I carry a great doubt about ever obtaining a son. If you are pleased with me, then grant me a son.'
Verse 47 (padma.6.41.47)
muniruvāca- adyaiva divase rājanputradā nāma vartate ekādaśīti vikhyātaṁ kriyatāṁ vratamuttamam
The sage said: 'O king, this very day is named Putrada, known as Ekadashi; perform this most excellent vow.'
Verse 48 (padma.6.41.48)
abhiṣekāttato'smākaṁ keśavasya prasādataḥ avaśyaṁ tava rājeṁdra putraprāptirbhaviṣyati
'Then, after our bathing rite, by the grace of Keshava, O lord of kings, you shall surely obtain a son.'
Verse 49 (padma.6.41.49)
ityevaṁ vacanātteṣāṁ kṛtaṁ rājñā vratottamam munīnāmupadeśena putradā yā vidhānataḥ
At their word, the king observed that supreme Putrada vow, according to the sages' instruction and its due rite.
Verse 50 (padma.6.41.50)
dvādaśyāṁ pāraṇaṁ kṛtvā munīnnatvā punaḥ punaḥ ājagāma gṛhaṁ rājā rājñī garbhamathādadhau
Having broken the fast on Dvadashi and bowed again and again to the sages, the king returned home, and the queen then conceived.
Verse 51 (padma.6.41.51)
putro jātaḥ sūtikāle tejasvī puṇyakarmaṇā pitaraṁ toṣayāmāsa prajāpālo babhūva saḥ
At the time of delivery a radiant son was born, the fruit of pious deeds; he brought joy to his father and became protector of his people.
Verse 52 (padma.6.41.52)
tasmādrājanprakarttavyaṁ putradā vratamuttamam lokānāṁ tu hitārthāya tavāgre kathitaṁ mayā
Therefore, O king, this excellent vow named Putrada should surely be observed; I have told it to you for the welfare of the people.
Verse 53 (padma.6.41.53)
ekacittāstu ye martyāḥ kurvaṁti putradā vratam putrānprāpyeha loke tu mṛtāste svargagāminaḥ paṭhanācchravaṇādrājannagniṣṭomaphalaṁ labhet
Mortals who observe the Putrada vow with single-minded devotion obtain sons in this world and, upon death, go to heaven; merely by reading or hearing it, one attains the fruit of the Agnishtoma sacrifice.
