Shattila Ekadashi of Magha Krishna
Verse 1 (padma.6.42.1)
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca- sādhu kṛṣṇa jagannātha ādideva jagatpate kathayasva prasādena kṛpāṁ kuru mamopari
Yudhishthira said: Well spoken, O Krishna, Jagannatha, primal god, lord of the world. By your grace, kindly show me favor.
Verse 2 (padma.6.42.2)
māghasya kṛṣṇapakṣe tu kā vā caikādaśī bhavet kiṁ nāma ko vidhistasyā etadvistarato vada
Which Ekadashi falls in the dark fortnight of Magha? What is its name and its rite - tell me this in full detail.
Verse 3 (padma.6.42.3)
śrībhagavānuvāca- śṛṇu tvaṁ nṛpaśārdūla kṛṣṇamāghasya yā bhavet ṣaṭtilā nāma vikhyātā sarvapāpapraṇāśinī
The Blessed Lord said: Listen, O tiger among kings, to the Ekadashi that falls in the dark half of Magha; it is renowned by the name Shattila, and it destroys every sin.
Verse 4 (padma.6.42.4)
ṣaṭtilāyāḥ śṛṇuṣva tvaṁ kathāṁ pāpaharāṁ śubhām yāṁ pulastyo muniśreṣṭho dālabhyaṁ prati coktavān
Listen to the auspicious, sin-removing tale of Shattila, which Pulastya, foremost of sages, once told to Dalabhya.
Verse 5 (padma.6.42.5)
dālabhya uvāca- martyalokamanuprāptāḥ pāpaṁ kurvaṁti jaṁtavaḥ brahmahatyādipāpaiśca yuktā ye vividhādibhiḥ
Dalabhya said: Beings who come into the mortal world commit sin; those entangled in the sin of killing a brahmin and various other sins,
Verse 6 (padma.6.42.6)
paradravyāpahārāśca paravyasanamohitāḥ kathaṁ na yāṁti narakaṁ brahmaṁstadbrūhi tattvataḥ
those who seize others' wealth and remain infatuated with others' vices - why do they not fall to hell? O Brahmin, tell me this truly.
Verse 7 (padma.6.42.7)
anāyāsena bhagavandānenālpena kenacit pāpaṁ praśamanaṁ yāti etanme vaktumarhasi
O Lord, by what small, effortless gift does sin come to be quieted? This you should tell me.
Verse 8 (padma.6.42.8)
pulastya uvāca- sādhusādhu mahābhāga guhyametatsudurllabham yanna kasyacidākhyātaṁ viṣṇubrahmeṁdradaivataiḥ
Pulastya said: Well said, well said, O fortunate one; this is a most rare secret, which not even Vishnu, Brahma, or Indra has ever told to anyone.
Verse 9 (padma.6.42.9)
tadahaṁ kathayiṣyāmi tvayā pṛṣṭo dvijottama māghamāse tu saṁprāpte śucisnāto jiteṁdriyaḥ
O best of brahmins, since you have asked, I shall tell it. When the month of Magha arrives, one who has bathed in purity and mastered the senses,
Verse 10 (padma.6.42.10)
kāmakrodhābhimānerṣyālobha paiśunya varjitaḥ devadevaṁ ca saṁsmṛtya pādau prakṣālya vāribhiḥ
free from desire, anger, pride, envy, greed and slander, remembering the God of gods and washing the feet with water,
Verse 11 (padma.6.42.11)
bhūmāvapatitaṁ gṛhya gomayaṁ tatra mānavaḥ tilānprakṣipya kārpāṁsaṁ piṁḍikāścaiva kārayet
should gather cow-dung fallen upon the ground, mix into it sesame seeds and cotton, and shape small lamp-balls (pindikas).
Verse 12 (padma.6.42.12)
aṣṭottaraśataṁ caiva nātra kāryā vicāraṇā tato māghe ca saṁprāpte hyāṣāḍharkṣaṁ bhavedyadi
There should be one hundred and eight of them, without any doubt. Then, when Magha comes, if the star is Ashadha,
Verse 13 (padma.6.42.13)
mūlaṁ vā kṛṣṇapakṣasyaikādaśī niyamāṁstataḥ gṛhṇīyātpuṇyakāle ca vidhānaṁ tatra me śṛṇu
or the star Mula, in the Ekadashi of the dark fortnight, one should take up the vow with due rule at that auspicious hour - hear its procedure from me.
Verse 14 (padma.6.42.14)
devadevaṁ samabhyarcya susnātaḥ prayataḥ śuciḥ kṛṣṇanāmāni saṁkīrtya punaḥ praskhalitādiṣu
Having duly worshipped the God of gods, bathed, restrained and made pure, repeatedly chanting the names of Krishna,
Verse 15 (padma.6.42.15)
rātrau jāgaraṇaṁ kuryādādau homaṁ ca kārayet arcayeddevadeveśaṁ dvitīye'hni punarharim
one should keep vigil through the night and first perform the fire-offering; on the second day one should again worship Hari, Lord of gods.
Verse 16 (padma.6.42.16)
caṁdanāgurukarpūrairnaivedyaṁ kṛsaraṁ tathā saṁsmṛtya nāmnā ca tataḥ kṛṣṇākhyena punaḥ punaḥ
With sandalwood, aguru and camphor, and with offerings such as krisara, remembering again and again the name 'Krishna',
Verse 17 (padma.6.42.17)
kūṣmāṁḍairnārikeraiśca hyathavā bījapūrakaiḥ sarvābhāve'pi vipreṁdra śastapūgaphalairvṛtam arghaṁ dadyādvidhānena pūjayitvā janārdanam
with pumpkin, coconut, or citron, or in the absence of all these, O best of brahmins, wrapped with betel-nut, one should worship Janardana duly and offer arghya.
Verse 18 (padma.6.42.18)
kṛṣṇakṛṣṇa kṛpālustvamagatīnāṁ gatirbhava saṁsārārṇava magnānāṁ prasīda puruṣottama
'O Krishna, Krishna, compassionate one, be the refuge of the refugeless. O Purushottama, be gracious to those sunk in the ocean of worldly existence.'
Verse 19 (padma.6.42.19)
namaste puṁḍarīkākṣa namaste viśvabhāvana subrahmaṇya namaste'stu mahāpuruṣapūrvaja gṛhāṇārghyaṁ mayā dattaṁ lakṣmyā saha jagatpate
'Salutations to you, O lotus-eyed one; salutations to you, sustainer of the universe. Salutations be to you, O Subrahmanya, ancestor of the great being. O lord of the world, accept this arghya offered by me, together with Lakshmi.'
Verse 20 (padma.6.42.20)
ityarghamaṁtraḥ tatastu pūjayedvipramudakuṁbhaṁ pradāpayet chatropānahavastraiśca kṛṣṇo me prīyatāmiti
This is the arghya-mantra. Then one should worship a brahmin, giving him a pot of water, an umbrella, sandals and cloth, saying: 'May Krishna be pleased with me.'
Verse 21 (padma.6.42.21)
kṛṣṇā dhenuḥ pradātavyā yathāśakti dvijottame tilapātraṁ dvijaśreṣṭha dadyātpātravicakṣaṇaḥ
A black cow should be given to a most excellent brahmin according to one's means; one skilled in choosing the vessel should give a vessel of sesame, O best of brahmins.
Verse 22 (padma.6.42.22)
snāne prāśanake śastāstathā kṛṣṇatilā mune tānpradadyātprayatnena yathāśakti dvijottame tilaprarohajāḥ kṣatre yāvatsaṁkhyāstilā dvija
O sage, black sesame is praised both for bathing and for eating; it should be given with effort, according to one's means, to the most excellent brahmin. O brahmin, as many sesame seeds as sprout in a field,
Verse 23 (padma.6.42.23)
tāvadvarṣasahasrāṇi svargaloke mahīyate tilasnāyī tilodvartī tilahomī tilodakī
for that many thousand years one is honored in the heavenly world. One who bathes with sesame, anoints with sesame, offers sesame in the fire-rite, offers sesame-water,
Verse 24 (padma.6.42.24)
tiladātā ca bhoktā ca ṣaṭtilāḥ pāpanāśanāḥ nārada uvāca- kṛṣṇakṛṣṇa mahābāho namaste viśvabhāvana
gives sesame, and eats sesame - these six 'shat-tila' acts destroy sin. Narada said: O Krishna, Krishna, mighty-armed one, sustainer of the universe, salutations to you.
Verse 25 (padma.6.42.25)
ṣaṭtilaikādaśībhūtaṁ kīdṛśaṁ phalamasti vai sopākhyānaṁ mama brūhi yadi tuṣṭo'si yādava śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca śṛṇu rājanyathāvṛttaṁ dṛṣṭaṁ tatkathayāmi te martyaloke purā hyāsīdbrāhmaṇyekā ca nārada vratacaryāratā nityaṁ devapūjāratā sadā
What fruit comes from observing Shattila Ekadashi? O descendant of Yadu, if you are pleased with me, tell me this together with its story. Sri Krishna said: Listen, O king, I shall tell you exactly as it happened and as I witnessed it. O Narada, long ago in the mortal world there lived a brahmin woman, ever devoted to the practice of vows and ever intent upon the worship of the gods.
Verse 26 (padma.6.42.26)
māsopavāsaniratā mama bhaktā ca sarvadā kṛṣṇopavāsasaṁyuktā mama pūjāparāyaṇā
She was constantly absorbed in month-long fasting, always my devotee, joined with fasting on the Krishna [Ekadashi], and ever devoted to my worship.
Verse 27 (padma.6.42.27)
śarīraṁ kleśitaṁ caiva upavāsairdvijottama devānāṁ brāhmaṇānāṁ ca kumārīṇāṁ ca bhaktitaḥ
O best of brahmins, her body had grown afflicted by her many fasts; and out of devotion toward gods, brahmins and unmarried maidens,
Verse 28 (padma.6.42.28)
gṛhādikaṁ prayacchaṁtī sarvakālaṁ mahāsatī atikṛcchraratā sā tu sarvakālaṁ tu vai dvija
that great chaste woman constantly gave away her house and possessions, ever devoted, O brahmin, to the severest austerities.
Verse 29 (padma.6.42.29)
na dattā bhikṣuke bhikṣā brāhmaṇā na ca tarpitāḥ
Yet she never gave alms to a single beggar, nor did she ever satisfy the brahmins with food.
Verse 30 (padma.6.42.30)
tataḥ kālena mahatā mayā vai ciṁtitaṁ dvija śuddhamasyāḥ śarīraṁ hi vrataiḥ kṛcchrairna saṁśayaḥ
Then, after a long while, I thought, O brahmin: her body has indeed been purified by these vows and austerities, without doubt.
Verse 31 (padma.6.42.31)
arcito vaiṣṇavo lokaḥ kāyakleśena vai tayā na dattamannadānaṁ hi yena tṛptiḥ parā bhavet
Through her bodily hardship she has indeed worshipped the world of Vishnu's devotees, but she has never given the gift of food, by which true satisfaction comes.
Verse 32 (padma.6.42.32)
evaṁ jñātvā ahaṁ brahmanmartyalokamupāgataḥ kāpālaṁ rūpamāsthāya bhikṣāpātre ca yācitā
Knowing this, O Brahmin, I descended to the mortal world, taking the form of a skull-bearing mendicant, and begged at her almsbowl.
Verse 33 (padma.6.42.33)
kasmāttvamāgato brahmankva yāsi vada me'grataḥ punareva mayā proktaṁ dehi bhikṣāṁ ca suṁdari
'From where have you come, O Brahmin, and where do you go? Tell me' - to this I answered again: 'Give me alms, O beautiful one.'
Verse 34 (padma.6.42.34)
tayā kopena mahatā mṛtpiṁḍastāmrabhājane kṣipto yāvadahaṁ brahmanpunaḥ svargaṁ gato dvija
In great anger she threw a lump of clay into my copper bowl; then, O brahmin, I returned once more to heaven.
Verse 35 (padma.6.42.35)
tataḥ kālena mahatā tāpasī sumahāvratā sadehā svargamāyātā vratacaryā prabhāvataḥ
Then, after a long time had passed, that ascetic woman of the great vow arrived in heaven, still in her own body, by the power of her observance.
Verse 36 (padma.6.42.36)
mṛtpiṁḍikāpradānena gṛhaṁ prāptaṁ manoramam saṁjātaṁ caiva viprarṣe dhānyarāśi vivarjitam
By the gift of that lump of clay she obtained a beautiful house; but, O sage among brahmins, that house was found empty of any store of grain.
Verse 37 (padma.6.42.37)
gṛhaṁ yāvannirīkṣeta na kiṁcittatra paśyati tāvadgṛhādviniṣkrāṁtā mamāṁte cāgatā dvija
However far she surveyed the house, she saw nothing there at all; then she came out of the house and came to me, O brahmin.
Verse 38 (padma.6.42.38)
krodhena mahatāviṣṭamidaṁ vacanamabravīt mayā vrataiśca kṛcchraiśca upavāsairanekaśaḥ
Overcome with great anger, she spoke these words: 'By my vows, my severe austerities, and my many fastings,
Verse 39 (padma.6.42.39)
pūjayārādhito devaḥ sarvalokasya pālakaḥ na tatra dṛśyate kiṁcidgṛhe mama janārdana
I have worshipped and propitiated the god who protects all the worlds - yet, O Janardana, nothing at all is to be seen in my house!'
Verse 40 (padma.6.42.40)
tataścoktaṁ mayā tasyai gṛhaṁ gaccha mahāvrate āgamiṣyaṁti sutarāṁ kautūhala samanvitāḥ
Then I said to her: 'O woman of the great vow, go to your house; the wives of the gods will surely come, filled with curiosity -
Verse 41 (padma.6.42.41)
devapatnyo hi draṣṭuṁ tvāṁ vismayābhisamanvitāḥ dvāraṁ nodghāṭaya vinā ṣaṭtilāpuṇyavācanāt
they will come, filled with wonder, to see you. Do not open the door until the merit of Shattila has been recounted.'
Verse 42 (padma.6.42.42)
evamuktā mayā sā tu gatā vai mānuṣī tadā atrāṁtare samāyātā devapatnyaśca vāḍava
Having been told this, that human woman then departed. Meanwhile, O brahmin, the wives of the gods arrived there.
Verse 43 (padma.6.42.43)
tābhiśca kathitaṁ tatra tvāṁ draṣṭuṁ hi samāgatāḥ dvāramudghāṭayasvādya tvāṁ prapaśyāma śobhane
They said to her: 'We have come to see you; open the door today, O beautiful one, that we may behold you.'
Verse 44 (padma.6.42.44)
mānuṣyuvāca- yadi maddarśanaṁ kāryaṁ satyaṁ vācyaṁ viśeṣataḥ ṣaṭtilāyā vrataṁ puṇyaṁ dvārodghāṭanakāraṇāt
The human woman said: 'If you truly wish to see me, then the merit of the Shattila vow must be specially declared; only for that reason will the door be opened.'
Verse 45 (padma.6.42.45)
śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca- ekāpināvadattatra ṣaṭtilaikādaśīvratam anyayā kathitaṁ tatra draṣṭavyā mānuṣī mayā
Sri Krishna said: Not one of them there, alone, could recount the vow of Shattila Ekadashi; then another among them told it, and only then was the human woman revealed to be seen.
Verse 46 (padma.6.42.46)
Then, with the door opened, they beheld that human woman - she was neither a goddess, nor a gandharva-woman, nor an asura woman, nor a serpent-woman,
Verse 47 (padma.6.42.47)
dṛṣṭā pūrvaṁ tathā nārī yādṛśīyaṁ dvijarṣabha devīnāmupadeśena ṣaṭtilāyā vrataṁ kṛtam
nor had such a woman ever been seen before, O bull among brahmins. It was by the instruction of the goddesses that the vow of Shattila had been performed.
Verse 48 (padma.6.42.48)
mānuṣyā satyavratayā bhuktimuktiphalapradam rūpakāṁtisamāyuktā kṣaṇena samavāpa sā
That human woman, through the true observance of the vow, instantly obtained radiant beauty granting the fruit of both worldly enjoyment and liberation.
Verse 49 (padma.6.42.49)
dhanaṁ dhānyaṁ ca vastrādi suvarṇaṁ raupyameva ca bhavanaṁ sarvasaṁpannaṁ ṣaṭtilāyāḥ prabhāvataḥ
By the power of Shattila she obtained wealth, grain, garments, gold and silver, and a mansion complete with every comfort.
Verse 50 (padma.6.42.50)
rūpakāṁtisamāyuktā kṣaṇena samapadyata
Radiant beauty and splendor came upon her in but a moment.
Verse 51 (padma.6.42.51)
atitṛṣṇā na karttavyā vittaśāṭhyaṁ vivarjayet ātmavittānusāreṇa tilānvastrāṇi dāpayet
One should not be overly greedy, and should give up stinginess regarding wealth; one should give sesame and garments according to one's own means.
Verse 52 (padma.6.42.52)
labhate caivamārogyaṁ naro janmani janmani na dāridryaṁ na kaṣṭatvaṁ na ca daurbhāgyameva ca
Thus a man obtains health in birth after birth; neither poverty, nor hardship, nor misfortune
Verse 53 (padma.6.42.53)
saṁbhavedvai dvijaśreṣṭha ṣaṭtilāsamupoṣaṇāt anena vidhinā bhūpa tiladātā na saṁśayaḥ
shall befall him, O best of brahmins, through the fast of Shattila. By this rite, O king, one who gives sesame, without doubt,
Verse 54 (padma.6.42.54)
mucyate pātakaiḥ sarvairanāyāsena mānavaḥ dānaṁ ca vidhivatpātre sarvapātakanāśanam nānarthaḥ kaścinnāyāsaḥ śarīre nṛpasattama
is freed from every sin with ease. A gift given properly to a worthy recipient destroys all sin; from it the body suffers neither harm nor hardship, O best of kings.
