Chapter 42All chaptersChapter 44

Verse 1 (padma.6.43.1)

yudhiṣṭhira uvāca- sādhu kṛṣṇa tvayā proktamādidevo bhavānprabho svedajā aṁḍajāścaiva udbhijjāśca jarāyujāḥ

Yudhishthira said: Well spoken, O Krishna; you yourself are the primal Lord - of beings born from sweat, from eggs, from the earth, and from the womb -

Verse 2 (padma.6.43.2)

teṣāṁ karttā vikarttā tvaṁ pālakaḥ kṣayakārakaḥ māghasya kṛṣṇapakṣe tu ṣaṭtilā kathitā tvayā

of all these you are the creator, the un-creator, the protector, and the destroyer. You have told me of Shattila Ekadashi in the dark fortnight of Magha.

Verse 3 (padma.6.43.3)

śukle ca kā bhaveddeva kathayasva prasādataḥ kiṁ nāma ko vidhistasyāḥ ko devastatra pūjyate

O Lord, which Ekadashi falls in the bright fortnight? Kindly tell me. What is its name, what is its rite, and which deity is worshipped there?

Verse 4 (padma.6.43.4)

śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca- kathayiṣyāmi rājeṁdra śukle māghasya yā bhavet jayā nāmeti vikhyātā sarvapāpaharā parā

Sri Krishna said: O lord of kings, I shall now speak of the Ekadashi in the bright fortnight of Magha. It is renowned by the name Jaya - the supreme Ekadashi that removes every sin.

Verse 5 (padma.6.43.5)

pavitrā pāpahaṁtrī ca kāmadā mokṣadā nṛṇām brahmahatyāpahaṁtrī ca piśācatvavināśinī

It is pure, it destroys sin, and it grants both desire and liberation to men. It removes even the sin of killing a brahmin, and it destroys the state of being a ghoul (pishacha).

Verse 6 (padma.6.43.6)

naiva tasyā vrate cīrṇe pretatvaṁ jāyate nṛṇām nātaḥ paratarā kācitpāpaghnī mokṣadāyinī

By observing this vow, men never come to the state of a wandering ghost (preta). None other surpasses it in destroying sin and granting liberation.

Verse 7 (padma.6.43.7)

etasmātkāraṇādrājankarttavyā sā prayatnataḥ śrūyatāṁ rājaśārdūla kathā paurāṇikī śubhā

For this very reason, O king, it must be observed with careful effort. O tiger among kings, now listen to this auspicious Puranic tale.

Verse 8 (padma.6.43.8)

paṁkaje ca purāṇe'syā mahimā kathito mayā ekadā nākaloke vai iṁdro rājyaṁ cakāra ha

I have told this glory in the Padma Purana itself. Once, in the heavenly world, Indra was ruling as king.

Verse 9 (padma.6.43.9)

devāstatra sukhenaiva nivasaṁti manorame pīyūṣapānaniratā apsarogaṇasevitāḥ

There the gods dwelt happily in that delightful realm, absorbed in drinking nectar, and attended by throngs of apsaras.

Verse 10 (padma.6.43.10)

naṁdanaṁ tu vanaṁ tatra pārijātopasevitam ramayaṁti ramaṁte'tra apsarobhirdivaukasaḥ

There stood the Nandana grove, graced by the parijata tree; there the dwellers of heaven took delight and sported with the apsaras.

Verse 11 (padma.6.43.11)

ekadā ramamāṇo'sau deveṁdraḥ svecchayā nṛpa narttayāmāsa vai harṣātpaṁcāśatkoṭināyakaḥ

Once, O king, as he wandered there at his pleasure, the lord of Indra, ruler of fifty crore hosts, joyfully arranged for dance to be performed.

Verse 12 (padma.6.43.12)

gaṁdharvāstatra gāyaṁti gaṁdharvaḥ puṣpadaṁtakaḥ citrasenastu tatraiva citrasenasutā tathā

There the gandharvas sang - the gandharva Pushpadantaka, and Chitrasena too was there, along with Chitrasena's daughter.

Verse 13 (padma.6.43.13)

mālinīti ca nāmnā tu citrasenasya yoṣitā mālinyāstu samutpannā puṣpadaṁtī ca nāmataḥ

Chitrasena's wife was named Malini; the daughter born of Malini was known by the name Pushpadanti.

Verse 14 (padma.6.43.14)

puṣpadaṁtasya putro'sau mālyavānnāma nāmataḥ puṣpadaṁtyāśca rūpeṇa mālyavānatimohitaḥ

Pushpadanta's son was known by the name Malyavan; Malyavan became utterly enchanted by Pushpadanti's beauty.

Verse 15 (padma.6.43.15)

tayā hyevaṁ kaṭākṣaiśca mālyavāṁśca vaśīkṛtaḥ lāvaṇyaṁ rūpasaṁpannaṁ tasyā rūpaṁ niśāmaya

By her sidelong glances Malyavan was drawn wholly under her sway; behold her beauty, filled with grace and loveliness -

Verse 16 (padma.6.43.16)

bāhū tasyāśca kāmena kaṁṭhapāśau kṛtāviva karṇāyate tu nayane raktāṁte ghūrṇite tathā

Kama seemed to have fashioned her two arms into a noose about the neck; her eyes reached to her ears and rolled with reddened corners.

Verse 17 (padma.6.43.17)

karṇau tu śobhanau tasyāḥ kuṇḍalābhyāṁ nṛpottama kaṁbugrīvāyutā saiva divyābharaṇabhūṣitā

O best of kings, her ears were adorned with beautiful earrings; her neck was shaped like a conch, and she was decked with celestial ornaments.

Verse 18 (padma.6.43.18)

pīnonnatau kucau tasyāstau hemakalaśāviva madhyaṁ kṣāmaṁ ca cārvaṁgyā muṣṭigrāhyamanuttamam

Her two breasts were full and raised, like golden pitchers; that lovely woman's waist was slender, graspable within a single fist.

Verse 19 (padma.6.43.19)

nitaṁbau vistṛtau cāsyā vistīrṇā jaghanasthalī caraṇau śobhamānau ca raktotpalasamadyutī

Her hips were broad and her thighs full and spread; her feet were beautiful, glowing like red lotuses.

Verse 20 (padma.6.43.20)

īdṛśyā puṣpavatyā sa mālyavānatimohitaḥ śakrasya paritoṣāya nṛtyārthaṁ tau samāgatau

Malyavan became utterly enchanted by such a Pushpadanti. Both of them had come there to dance for Indra's delight.

Verse 21 (padma.6.43.21)

gāyamānau tu tau tatra apsarogaṇasevitau madanābhiparītāṁgau puṣpadaṁtī ca mālyavān

There, attended by throngs of apsaras, the two of them began to sing; Pushpadanti and Malyavan, their limbs pervaded by desire,

Verse 22 (padma.6.43.22)

parasparānurāgeṇa vyāmohavaśamāgatau na śuddhagānaṁ gāyetāṁ cittabhramasamanvitau

fell under the sway of mutual infatuation; with their minds distracted, they could not sing the song purely.

Verse 23 (padma.6.43.23)

baddhadṛṣṭī tathānyonyaṁ kāmabāṇavaśaṁ gatau jñātvā lekharṣabhastatra saṁgataṁ mānasaṁ tayoḥ

With their gazes locked upon each other, both fell under the sway of Kama's arrow. Then, perceiving the state of their minds thus joined, the foremost scribe [there present],

Verse 24 (padma.6.43.24)

tālakriyāmānalopāttathā gītavisarjanāt ciṁtayitvā tu maghavā hyavamānaṁ tathātmanaḥ

seeing the failure of the rhythm and the scattering of the song, Indra, reflecting on this as an affront to himself,

Verse 25 (padma.6.43.25)

kupitaśca tayorarthe śāpaṁ dāsyannidaṁ jagau dhigdhigvāṁ patitau mūḍhāvājñābhaṁga kṛtau mama

grew angry with them both and, about to curse them, spoke thus: 'Shame, shame upon you two fools, who have fallen by breaking my command.'

Verse 26 (padma.6.43.26)

yuvāṁ piśācau bhavatāṁ daṁpatībhāvadhāriṇau martyalokamanuprāptau bhuṁjānau karmaṇaḥ phalam

'You two shall become pishachas [ghouls], bound in the state of husband and wife; you shall go to the mortal world and suffer the fruit of your deed.'

Verse 27 (padma.6.43.27)

evaṁ maghavatā śaptāvubhau duḥkhitamānasau himavaṁtaṁ giriṁ prāptāviṁdraśāpādvimohitau

Thus cursed by Indra, the two of them, sorrowful at heart and dazed by Indra's curse, arrived at the Himalaya mountain.

Verse 28 (padma.6.43.28)

ubhau piśācatāṁ prāptau dāruṇaṁ duḥkhameva ca saṁtaptamānasau tatra himakṛcchragatāvubhau

Both of them attained the state of pishachas and fell into terrible suffering; with tormented minds, they endured the harsh affliction of the snow.

Verse 29 (padma.6.43.29)

gaṁdharvatvamapsarastvaṁ na jānīto vimauhitau pīḍyamānau nidāghena dehapātakajena ca

Bewildered, the two no longer knew themselves as gandharva and apsara; afflicted by the burning heat born of their fallen bodies,

Verse 30 (padma.6.43.30)

na niśāyāṁ sukhaṁ śāṁtiṁ labhete karmapīḍitau parasparaṁ vādamānau ceraturgirigahvare

tormented by their own deed, they found neither joy nor peace even by night; quarreling with one another, they wandered through the mountain caves.

Verse 31 (padma.6.43.31)

pīḍyamānau tu śītena tuṣāraprabhavena tau daṁtagharṣaṁ prakurvāṇau romāṁcitavapurddharau

Afflicted by the cold born of the frost, the two chattered their teeth and bore bodies covered with gooseflesh.

Verse 32 (padma.6.43.32)

ūce piśācaḥ sa tadā tāṁ patnīṁ svāṁ piśācikām kimanalpakṛtaṁ pāpaṁ dāruṇaṁ romaharṣaṇam

Then that pishacha spoke to his wife, that pishachi: 'What great and terrible sin, one to make the hair stand on end, have I committed,

Verse 33 (padma.6.43.33)

yena prāptaṁ piśācatvaṁ svena duṣkṛtakarmaṇā narakaṁ dāruṇaṁ matvā piśācatvaṁ ca duḥkhadam

that by my own evil deed I have obtained this state of a pishacha? Even hell is thought terrible, but this pishacha-state brings still greater suffering.

Verse 34 (padma.6.43.34)

tasmātsarvaprayatnena pātakaṁ na samācaret iti ciṁtāparau tatra tāvāstāṁ duḥkhakarṣitau

Therefore a man should by every effort avoid committing sin.' Thus, lost in such thought, the two remained there, worn down by suffering.

Verse 35 (padma.6.43.35)

daivayogāttayoḥ prāptā māghasyaikādaśī tithiḥ jayānāmeti vikhyātā tithīnāmuttamā tithiḥ

By divine chance, the Ekadashi tithi of Magha came upon them - the one known by the name Jaya, the most excellent of all tithis.

Verse 36 (padma.6.43.36)

tasmindine tu saṁprāpte tāvāhāravivarjitau āsāte tatra nṛpate jalapānavivarjitau

When that day arrived, the two of them remained without food; O king, they sat there without even taking water.

Verse 37 (padma.6.43.37)

na kṛto jīvaghātaśca na patraphalabhakṣaṇam aśvatthasya samīpe tau sarvadā duḥkhasaṁyutau

They neither harmed any living creature nor ate any leaf or fruit; near an ashvattha (peepal) tree the two remained, ever sunk in suffering.

Verse 38 (padma.6.43.38)

ravirastaṁgato rājaṁstathaiva sthitayostayoḥ prāptā caiva niśā ghorā dāruṇā prāṇahāriṇī

O king, as the sun set while the two remained in that very state, that dreadful, terrible, life-threatening night arrived.

Verse 39 (padma.6.43.39)

vepamānau tatastau tu tataḥ suṣupataḥ kṣitau paraspareṇa saṁlagnau gātrayorbhujayorapi

Then, trembling, the two of them lay down upon the ground, their limbs and arms clasped about one another.

Verse 40 (padma.6.43.40)

na nidrā na rataṁ tatra na tau saukhyamaviṁdatām evaṁ tau rājaśārdūla śāpeneṁdrasya pīḍitau

There came neither sleep, nor union, nor any comfort of any kind. O tiger among kings, thus the two of them remained afflicted by Indra's curse.

Verse 41 (padma.6.43.41)

itthaṁ tayorduḥkhitayornirjagāma niśīthinī mārtaṁḍa udayaṁ prāpto dvādaśī divasāgame

Thus, sorrowing, that night passed for the two of them; the sun rose and the day of Dvadashi arrived.

Verse 42 (padma.6.43.42)

mayā tu rājaśārdūla tayormuktirdhṛtā hṛdi jayāyāḥ suvrataṁ cīrṇaṁ rātrau jāgaraṇaṁ kṛtam

O tiger among kings, it was I who held their liberation in my own heart; the excellent vow of Jaya had been observed by them, and the night-vigil too had been kept.

Verse 43 (padma.6.43.43)

tasmādvrataprabhāvācca yathājātaṁ tathā śṛṇu dvādaśīdivase prāpte tathā cīrṇe jayā vrate

Hear now what came of the power of that very vow. When the day of Dvadashi arrived, the vow of Jaya having thus been completed,

Verse 44 (padma.6.43.44)

viṣṇoḥ prabhāvānnṛpate piśācatvaṁ tayorgatam puṣpadaṁtī mālyavatau pūrvarūpau babhūvatuḥ

O king, by the power of Vishnu the state of pishacha departed from them both; Pushpadanti and Malyavan returned to their former forms.

Verse 45 (padma.6.43.45)

purātanasnehayutau pūrvālaṁkāradhāriṇau vimānamadhirūḍhau tau gatau nāke manorame

Filled once more with their old love, and adorned again with their former ornaments, the two mounted a celestial chariot and went to that delightful heaven.

Verse 46 (padma.6.43.46)

deveṁdrasyāgrato gatvā praṇāmaṁ cakraturmudā tathāvidhau tu tau dṛṣṭvā maghavā vismito'bravīt

They went before Devendra and joyfully offered their salutations. Beholding them in that state, Indra, astonished, said -

Verse 47 (padma.6.43.47)

iṁdra uvāca- vada taṁ kena puṇyena piśācatvaṁ hi vāṁ gatau mama śāpaṁ ca saṁprāptau kena devena mocitau

Indra said: Tell me, by what merit have you both been freed from the state of pishachas? Having incurred my curse, by which god were you released?

Verse 48 (padma.6.43.48)

mālyavānuvāca- vāsudevaprasādena jayāyāstu vratena ca piśācatvaṁ gataṁ svāmiṁstava bhaktiprabhāvataḥ

Malyavan said: O lord, by the grace of Vasudeva and the power of the Jaya vow, and by the power of devotion to you as well, our state as pishachas has been removed.

Verse 49 (padma.6.43.49)

iti śrutvā tu maghavā pratyuvāca punastathā pavitrau pāvanau jātau vaṁdanīyau mamāpi ca

Hearing this, Indra replied once more: 'You two have now become pure and holy, and are worthy of reverence even to me.'

Verse 50 (padma.6.43.50)

harivāsarakartārau viṣṇubhaktiparāyaṇau harivāsarasam̐llīnā ye ca kṛṣṇaparāyaṇāḥ

'You are both observers of Hari's day [Ekadashi] and devoted to Vishnu-bhakti. Whoever remains absorbed in Hari's day and devoted to Krishna,

Verse 51 (padma.6.43.51)

asmākamapi martyāste pūjyāścaiva na saṁśayaḥ viharasva yathāsaukhyaṁ puṣpadaṁtyā surālaye

such mortals too are worthy of our worship, without doubt. Now go and dwell happily with Pushpadanti in the abode of the gods.'

Verse 52 (padma.6.43.52)

kṛṣṇa uvāca- etasmātkāraṇādrājankarttavyo harivāsaraḥ jayā tu rājaśārdūla brahmahatyāpahāriṇī

Krishna said: For this very reason, O king, Hari's day should be observed. O tiger among kings, Jaya Ekadashi removes sin even up to the killing of a brahmin.

Verse 53 (padma.6.43.53)

sarvadānāni tenaiva sarvayajñā aśeṣataḥ dattāni kāritāścaiva jayāyāstu vrataṁ kṛtam

By observing it alone, all gifts and all sacrifices are reckoned as having been given and performed in full - such is the fruit gained merely by observing the vow of Jaya.

Verse 54 (padma.6.43.54)

kalpakoṭirbhavettāvadvaikuṁṭhe modate dhruvam paṭhanācchravaṇādrājannagniṣṭomaphalaṁ labhet

For that many crore kalpas that man surely rejoices in Vaikuntha. Even by merely reading or hearing it, O king, one attains the fruit of the Agnishtoma sacrifice.
