Uttara Khanda · Chapter 45
Amalaki Ekadashi of Phalguna Shukla
Verse 1 (padma.6.45.1)
śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca- māhātmyaṁ vijayāyāśca śrutaṁ kṛṣṇa mahatphalam phālgunasyārjune pakṣe yannāmnī tāṁ vadādhunā
Sri Krishna said: The glory of Vijaya, whose fruit is great, has now been heard, O Krishna [Arjuna]. Now tell me the name of the Ekadashi that falls in the bright fortnight of Phalguna.
Verse 2 (padma.6.45.2)
śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca- dharmaputra mahābhāga śṛṇu vakṣyāmite'dhunā yoktā pṛṣṭena māṁdhātrā vasiṣṭhena mahātmanā
Sri Krishna said: O fortunate son of Dharma, listen, I shall now tell you what King Mandhata once obtained by asking the great sage Vasishtha.
Verse 3 (padma.6.45.3)
phālgunasya viśeṣeṇa viśeṣaḥ kathito nṛpa āmalakīvrataṁ puṇyaṁ viṣṇulokaphalapradam
O king, the special Ekadashi of Phalguna has been specially described. The Amalaki vow is meritorious and bestows the fruit of Vishnu's own realm.
Verse 4 (padma.6.45.4)
āmalakyāstale gatvā jāgaraṁ tatra kārayet kṛtvā jāgaraṇaṁ rātrau gosahasraphalaṁ labhet
One should go to the foot of the amalaki tree and keep vigil there through the night. By keeping that night-vigil, one obtains the fruit of donating a thousand cows.
Verse 5 (padma.6.45.5)
māṁdhātovāca - āmalakī kadā hyeṣā utpannā dvijasattama etatsarvaṁ mamācakṣva paraṁ kautūhalaṁ hi me
Mandhata said: O best of the twice-born, when did this amalaki tree first come into being? Tell me all of this, for I am filled with deep curiosity.
Verse 6 (padma.6.45.6)
kasmādiyaṁ pavitrā ca kasmātpāpapraṇāśinī kasmājjāgaraṇaṁ kṛtvā gosahasraphalaṁ labhet
For what reason is it sacred, for what reason does it destroy sins? For what reason does keeping vigil beneath it grant the fruit of a thousand cows?
Verse 7 (padma.6.45.7)
vasiṣṭha uvāca- kathayāmi mahābhāga yatheyamabhavatkṣitau āmalakī mahāvṛkṣaḥ sarvapāpapraṇāśanaḥ
Vasishtha said: O fortunate one, I shall tell how this came to be upon the earth. Amalaki is a great tree, the destroyer of all sins.
Verse 8 (padma.6.45.8)
ekārṇave purā jāte naṣṭe sthāvarajaṁgame naṣṭe devāsuragaṇe praṇaṣṭoragarākṣase
Long ago, when there remained but a single ocean, when all moving and unmoving beings had perished, when the hosts of gods and demons had perished, and the serpents and rakshasas too had perished,
Verse 9 (padma.6.45.9)
tatra devādideveśaḥ paramātmā sanātanaḥ jagāma brahmaparamamātmanaḥ padamavyayam
then the Lord of the gods of gods, the eternal Supreme Self, withdrew into the imperishable, supreme state of Brahman.
Verse 10 (padma.6.45.10)
Then, as he awakened, from his mouth there fell, in the form of spittle, a drop radiant as the moon, and it dropped upon the earth.
Verse 11 (padma.6.45.11)
tasmādbiṁdoḥ samutpannaḥ svayaṁ dhātrī nago mahān śākhāpraśākhābahulaḥ phalabhāreṇa nāmitaḥ
From that drop there sprang up of itself a great tree, the dhatri (amalaki), abundant with branches and sub-branches, bent low under the weight of its fruit.
Verse 12 (padma.6.45.12)
sarveṣāṁ caiva vṛkṣāṇāmādirohaḥ prakīrtitaḥ brahmaṇātha tataḥ paścātsaṁsṛṣṭāśca imāḥ prajāḥ
This is proclaimed to be the very first tree to have grown among all trees. After this, Brahma created all these creatures -
Verse 13 (padma.6.45.13)
devadānavagaṁdharvayakṣarākṣasapannagān asṛjadbhagavāndevo maharṣīṁśca tathāmalān
gods, demons, gandharvas, yakshas, rakshasas and serpents; the Lord God also created the pure great sages.
Verse 14 (padma.6.45.14)
ājagmustatra devāste yatra dhātrī haripriyā tāṁ dṛṣṭvā te mahābhāga paraṁ vismayamāgatāḥ
Those gods came to the place where the dhatri, beloved of Hari, stood. O fortunate one, beholding it they were filled with the greatest wonder.
Verse 15 (padma.6.45.15)
na jānīma imaṁ vṛkṣaṁ ciṁtayaṁto'bhisaṁsthitāḥ evaṁ ciṁtayatāṁ teṣāṁ vāguvācāśarīriṇī
'We do not know this tree' - thinking so, they stood there. As they pondered thus, a disembodied voice spoke -
Verse 16 (padma.6.45.16)
āmalakī nago hyeṣa pravaro vaiṣṇavo mataḥ asya saṁsmaraṇādeva labhedgodānajaṁ phalam
'This is the amalaki tree, held to be the most excellent among Vishnu's own; by merely remembering it, one obtains the fruit of the gift of a cow.
Verse 17 (padma.6.45.17)
sparśanāddviguṇaṁ puṇyaṁ triguṇaṁ dhāraṇāttathā tasmātsarvaprayatnena sevyā āmalakī sadā
By touching it, double the merit is obtained, and by wearing [its leaves or fruit], triple the merit. Therefore the amalaki should always be attended to with every effort.
Verse 18 (padma.6.45.18)
sarvapāpaharā proktā vaiṣṇavī pāpanāśinī tasyā mūle sthito viṣṇustadūrdhve ca pitāmahaḥ
This Vaishnava tree is said to remove all sin and destroy every wrongdoing. At its root dwells Vishnu, and above that the grandsire Brahma.
Verse 19 (padma.6.45.19)
skaṁdhe ca bhagavānrudraḥ saṁsthitaḥ parameśvaraḥ śākhāsu munayaḥ sarve praśākhāsu ca devatāḥ
Upon its trunk sits the Lord, the supreme god Rudra; upon its branches dwell all the sages, and upon its sub-branches, the gods.
Verse 20 (padma.6.45.20)
parṇeṣu cāsate devāḥ puṣpeṣu marutastathā prajānāṁ patayaḥ sarve phaleṣveva vyavasthitāḥ
Upon its leaves dwell the gods, and upon its blossoms the Maruts; and upon all its fruits the lords of creatures (Prajapatis) abide.
Verse 21 (padma.6.45.21)
sarvadevamayī hyeṣā dhātrī ca kathitā mayā tasmātpūjyatamā hyeṣā viṣṇubhaktiparāyaṇaiḥ
This dhatri is thus declared to be filled with the presence of all the gods. For this reason it is most worthy of worship among those devoted to Vishnu's bhakti.
Verse 22 (padma.6.45.22)
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ - ko bhavānna hi jānīmaḥ kasmātkāraṇatāṁ gataḥ devo vā yadi vā cānyaḥ kathayasva yathātatham
The sages said: We do not know who you are; for what reason have you appeared here? Whether you are a god or something else - tell us this truly.
Verse 23 (padma.6.45.23)
vāguvāca - yaḥ kartā sarvabhūtānāṁ bhuvanānāṁ ca sarvaśaḥ vismitānviduṣaḥ prekṣya so'haṁ viṣṇuḥ sanātanaḥ
The Voice said: I who am the creator of all beings and of all worlds - beholding these learned ones astonished, I am that same eternal Vishnu.
Verse 24 (padma.6.45.24)
tacchrutvā devadevasya bhāṣitaṁ brahmaṇaḥ sutāḥ anādinidhanaṁ devaṁ stotuṁ tatra pracakramuḥ
Having heard these words of the God of gods, those sons of Brahma began there to praise that god without beginning or end.
Verse 25 (padma.6.45.25)
namo bhūtātmabhūtāya ātmane paramātmane acyutāya namo nityamanaṁtāya namo namaḥ
'Salutations to him who is the very self of all beings, the Self, the Supreme Self; salutations forever to the Unfallen One, salutations again and again to the Infinite.'
Verse 26 (padma.6.45.26)
dāmodarāya kavaye yajñeśāya namo namaḥ evaṁ stutastu ṛṣibhistutoṣa bhagavānhariḥ
'Salutations again and again to Damodara, the poet-seer, the Lord of sacrifice.' Being thus praised by the sages, the Blessed Lord Hari was pleased.
Verse 27 (padma.6.45.27)
pratyuvāca maharṣīṁstānabhīṣṭaṁ kiṁ dadāmi vaḥ ṛṣaya ūcuḥ yadi tuṣṭo'si bhagavannasmākaṁ hitakāmyayā
He replied to those great sages: what do you desire, what shall I grant you? The sages said: O Lord, if you are pleased and wish our welfare,
Verse 28 (padma.6.45.28)
vrataṁ kiṁcitsamākhyāhi svargamokṣaphalapradam dhanadhānyapradaṁ puṇyamātmanastuṣṭikārakam
then tell us some vow that grants both the fruit of heaven and liberation - one that bestows wealth and grain, is meritorious, and brings contentment to the soul.
Verse 29 (padma.6.45.29)
alpāyāsaṁ bahuphalaṁ vratānāmuttamaṁ vratam kṛtena yena deveśa viṣṇuloke mahīyate
One that requires little effort but yields abundant fruit, the best among all vows, by observing which, O lord of gods, one is honored in the realm of Vishnu.
Verse 30 (padma.6.45.30)
viṣṇuruvāca- phālgune śuklapakṣe tu puṣyeṇa dvādaśī yadi bhavetsā ca mahāpuṇyā mahāpātakanāśinī
Vishnu said: If in the bright fortnight of Phalguna the Dvadashi falls under the Pushya nakshatra, then it becomes exceedingly meritorious and destroys the gravest of sins.
Verse 31 (padma.6.45.31)
viśeṣastatra karttavyaḥ śṛṇudhvaṁ dvijasattamāḥ āmalakīṁ ca saṁprāpya jāgaraṁ tatra kārayet
On that day there is a special observance - listen, O best of the twice-born. Having found an amalaki tree, one should keep vigil beneath it through the night.
Verse 32 (padma.6.45.32)
sarvapāpavinirmukto gosahasraphalaṁ labhet etadvaḥ kathitaṁ viprā vratānāṁ vratamuttamam arcayitvācyutaṁ tasyāṁ viṣṇulokānna mucyate
By this a man, freed from all sins, obtains the fruit of donating a thousand cows. O brahmins, I have told you this, the best among vows; one who worships Achyuta on that day is never released from Vishnu's realm [that is, never returns from it].
Verse 33 (padma.6.45.33)
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ - vratasyāsya vidhiṁ brūhi paripūrṇaṁ kathaṁ bhavet ke maṁtrāḥ ke namaskārāḥ devatā kā prakīrtitā
The sages said: Tell us the complete rite of this vow. What are its mantras, what are its salutations, and which deity is it dedicated to?
Verse 34 (padma.6.45.34)
kathaṁ dānaṁ kathaṁ snānaṁ kaśca pūjāvidhiḥ smṛtaḥ arghārcanasya maṁtraṁ tu kathayasva yathātatham
How should one give charity, how should one bathe, what is the rite of worship held to be? Tell us also the mantra for arghya and worship, exactly as it is.
Verse 35 (padma.6.45.35)
viṣṇuruvāca- śrūyatāṁ yo vidhiḥ samyagvratasyāsya dvijarṣabhāḥ ekādaśyāṁ nirāhāraḥ sthitvā caiva pare'hani
Vishnu said: O bulls among brahmins, listen to the proper rite of this vow. Remaining without food on Ekadashi, and on the following day,
Verse 36 (padma.6.45.36)

[one should vow:] 'O lotus-eyed one, I shall eat; O Achyuta, be my refuge' - taking this vow, and having first cleansed the teeth,
Verse 37 (padma.6.45.37)
nālapetpatitāṁścaurāṁstathā pāṣaṁḍino narān durvṛttānbhinnamaryādāngurudārapradharṣakān
one should not converse with fallen persons, thieves, hypocrites, the ill-behaved, those who transgress propriety, or those who violate their teacher's wife.
Verse 38 (padma.6.45.38)
aparāhṇe tataḥ snānaṁ vidhinā kārayedbudhaḥ nadyāṁ taḍāge kūpe vā gṛhe vā niyatātmavān
Then the wise person should bathe duly in the afternoon - in a river, a pond, a well, or, with a restrained mind, even at home.
Verse 39 (padma.6.45.39)
mṛttikālaṁbhanaṁ pūrvaṁ tataḥ snānaṁ ca kārayet aśvakrāṁte rathakrāṁte viṣṇukrāṁte vasuṁdhare
First one should take hold of clay and then bathe - [reciting:] 'O earth trodden by the horse's hoof, by the chariot's wheel, and by Vishnu's stride,
Verse 40 (padma.6.45.40)

Verse 41 (padma.6.45.41)
iti mṛttikāmaṁtraḥ tvamaṁbu sarvabhūtānāṁ jīvanaṁ tanurakṣakam svedajodbhijjajātīnāṁ rasānāṁ pataye namaḥ
'O water, you are the life and the protector of the body of all beings; salutations to the lord of the essences of those born of sweat and of the earth.'
Verse 42 (padma.6.45.42)
snāto'haṁ sarvatīrtheṣu hradaprasravaṇeṣu ca nadīṣu devakhāteṣu idaṁ snānaṁ tu me bhavet

āmalakīṁ tato gatvā pariśodhya samaṁtataḥ sthāpayetsatataṁ kuṁbhamavraṇaṁ maṁtrapūrvakam
Having gone to the amalaki and having thoroughly purified the ground all around it, an unblemished vessel should be set there firmly, with due mantra.
Verse 46 (padma.6.45.46)

jāmadagnyasvarūpeṇa prīyatāṁ mama keśavaḥ tataścāmalakīṁ spṛṣṭvā kṛtvā caiva pradakṣiṇām
[saying as one gives:] 'In this form of Jamadagnya, may my Keshava be pleased.' After that, having touched the amalaki and circumambulated it,
Verse 59 (padma.6.45.59)
snānaṁ kṛtvā vidhānena brāhmaṇānbhojayettataḥ tataśca svayamaśnīyātkuṭuṁbena samāvṛtaḥ
one should bathe according to the rite and feed the brahmins. After that, one should oneself eat, surrounded by one's family.
Verse 60 (padma.6.45.60)
evaṁ kṛtena yatpuṇyaṁ tatsarvaṁ kathayāmi te sarvatīrtheṣu yatpuṇyaṁ sarvadāneṣu yatphalam
I shall now tell you all the merit that comes from performing it thus - whatever merit lies in all the sacred crossings, whatever fruit lies in all gifts,

all of that, and more than the fruit of every sacrifice, is obtained here, without doubt. All this I have told you - this is the most excellent among all vows.
Verse 62 (padma.6.45.62)
etāvaduktvā deveśastatraivāṁtaradhīyata te cāpi ṛṣayaḥ sarve cakruḥ sarvamaśeṣataḥ
Having said this much, the Lord of gods vanished there itself; and all those sages too did all of it, leaving nothing undone.
Verse 63 (padma.6.45.63)
tathā tvamapi rājendra kartumarhasi sattama vratametaddurādharṣaṁ sarvapāpapramocanam
O lord of kings, in the very same way you too, O most excellent one, should observe this vow, so hard to withstand [in its power], which frees one from every sin.
