Chapter 4All chaptersChapter 6

Verse 1 (padma.6.5.1)

yudhiṣṭhira uvāca kaḥ pitṛvyaḥ siṁdhusūnoḥ kiṁ vṛttaṁ tasya vigrahe yuyudhe sa kathaṁ daityastanme kathaya nārada

Yudhishthira said: Who was the uncle of the ocean's son? What happened in his battle? How did that demon fight? Tell me this, O Narada.

Verse 2 (padma.6.5.2)

nārada uvāca śṛṇu tvaṁ nṛpaśārdūla pitṛvyaḥ kṣīrasāgaraḥ jālaṁdharasya taṁ devaiḥ pramathya dhanamāhṛtam

Narada said: Listen, O tiger among kings — his uncle was the Ocean of Milk; the gods, by churning him, carried off wealth that belonged, through him, to Jalandhara.

Verse 3 (padma.6.5.3)

śrīcaṁdrāmṛtanāgāśvapūrvaṁ tasya surāsuraiḥ tacchrutvā vigrahaṁ cakre devairjālaṁdharo'suraḥ

Hearing that the gods and demons had once taken from him Sri, the moon, the nectar, the elephant, the horse, and other treasures, the demon Jalandhara made war upon the gods.

Verse 4 (padma.6.5.4)

kadācitpreṣayāmāsa dūtaṁ durvāraṇaṁ balī śikṣayitvā tu vaktavyaṁ deveṁdrabhavanaṁ prati

Once that mighty one, having instructed an unstoppable envoy in what to say, sent him toward the abode of Devendra.

Verse 5 (padma.6.5.5)

atha syaṁdanamāruhya yayau durvāraṇo divi praveṣṭukāmo bhavanaṁ dvārasthairdvāri nivāritaḥ

Then, mounting a chariot, the unstoppable envoy went to heaven; wishing to enter the palace, he was stopped at the gate by the gatekeepers.

Verse 6 (padma.6.5.6)

dūta uvāca jālaṁdharasya dūto'haṁ āgataḥ śakrasaṁnidhau gatvā tatra bhavaṁto māṁ vijñāpayitumarhatha

The envoy said: 'I am Jalandhara's envoy, come into Indra's presence; go and announce me — this you ought to do.'

Verse 7 (padma.6.5.7)

iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā tadaiva tu śacīpatim gatvā ca praṇipatyāha dūto devāgato bhuvaḥ

Hearing his words, the gatekeeper at once went to Shachi's husband, and, bowing, said: 'An envoy has come, arrived from the earth.'

Verse 8 (padma.6.5.8)

dauvāriko maheṁdreṇa pratyukto dūtamānaya haste gṛhītvā taṁ dūtaṁ vāsavāṁtikamānayat

Mahendra answered the gatekeeper: 'Bring the envoy in.' He, taking the envoy by the hand, brought him into Vasava's presence.

Verse 9 (padma.6.5.9)

durvāraṇo devasabhāṁ praviṣṭaḥ pravyalokayat hariṁ devaistu yastriṁśatkoṭibhiḥ pariveṣṭitam

The unstoppable envoy, entering the assembly of the gods, beheld Indra there, surrounded by thirty million deities.

Verse 10 (padma.6.5.10)

svarṇasiṁhāsanaṁ divyaṁ cāmarānilasevitam śacīpremarasotphullanayanābjasahasrakam

He beheld the divine golden throne, fanned by the breeze of chowries, Indra's thousand lotus-eyes blossoming with the joy of Shachi's love.

Verse 11 (padma.6.5.11)

durvāraṇo'tha deveśaṁ vilokya guruṇā saha praṇanāmātmagarveṇa prahasannayanaśriyam

The unstoppable envoy, beholding the Lord of gods together with his guru, bowed — yet, inwardly laughing with his own pride, seemed to mock the very beauty of those eyes.

Verse 12 (padma.6.5.12)

nirdiṣṭamāsanaṁ bheje dūto jālaṁdharasya saḥ kasya tvaṁ kena kāryeṇa prāptaḥ prāheti taṁ hariḥ

Jalandhara's envoy then took the seat shown to him. Indra said to him: 'Whose are you, and for what purpose have you come?'

Verse 13 (padma.6.5.13)

dūto jālaṁdharasyāhaṁ sa jagāda puraṁdaram sa rājā sarvalokānāṁ tasyājñāṁ śṛṇu manmukhāt

'I am Jalandhara's envoy,' he said to Purandara — 'He is the king of all the worlds; hear his command from my mouth —

Verse 14 (padma.6.5.14)

pitṛvyo mama dugdhābdhistvayā kasmādviloḍitaḥ maṁdarādrividhānena hṛtaṁ kośaṁ mahādhanam

'Why have you churned my uncle, the Ocean of Milk, with Mount Mandara? Why have you seized his vast treasury of wealth?

Verse 15 (padma.6.5.15)

śrīcaṁdrāmṛtanāgāśvaṁ tanmaṇiṁ vidrumādikam dehi sarvaṁ tathā svargaṁ śīghraṁ tyaja puraṁdara

'Sri, the moon, nectar, the elephant, the horse, that jewel, coral, and the rest — give all of it back, and heaven too; abandon it swiftly, O Purandara.'

Verse 16 (padma.6.5.16)

sa tvaṁ madvacanāttūrṇaṁ kuru sarvaṁ yathocitam taṁ kṣamāpaya bhūpāla yadi jīvitumicchasi

'At my word, do at once whatever is fitting; O king, if you wish to live, beg his forgiveness.'

Verse 17 (padma.6.5.17)

atha prahasya maghavā prāha durvāraṇaṁ prati śṛṇu dūta samāsena siṁdhormathanakāraṇam

Then, laughing, Indra said to the unstoppable envoy: 'Listen, envoy, briefly, to the reason for the churning of the ocean.

Verse 18 (padma.6.5.18)

purā himavataḥ sūnurmaināko nāma me ripuḥ sa kukṣau vidhṛtastena sāgareṇa jaḍena ca

'Long ago, my enemy Mainaka, son of Himavat, was hidden in the belly of that dull-witted ocean.

Verse 19 (padma.6.5.19)

dagdhaṁ carācaraṁ yena vahninā hayarūpiṇā sa cāpi vidhṛtastena sāgareṇa durātmanā

'And that fire in the form of a horse, which had once burned all moving and unmoving beings, was likewise hidden by that wicked ocean.

Verse 20 (padma.6.5.20)

dharmadviṣāṁ dānavānāmasau vai āśrayaḥ prabhuḥ nityaṁ dadhi ghṛtaṁ kṣīraṁ dānavebhyaḥ prayacchati

'He is the very refuge and lord of the dharma-hating demons; he ever supplies them with curd, ghee, and milk.

Verse 21 (padma.6.5.21)

ataevāyamasmābhiḥ durvāraṇa viloḍitaḥ daṁḍitaśca gataśrīko devairatha purātanaiḥ

'Therefore, O envoy, we churned him, and the ancient gods punished him, stripping him of his glory.

Verse 22 (padma.6.5.22)

śṛṇu dūta sabaṁdhena mama vipreṇa śoṣitaḥ kuṁbhodbhavena kiṁcaiṣa duḥsaṁge naiva bādhyate

'Listen further, envoy — he was once dried up even by that brahmin born of the pot, kin to me; and, besides, he cannot even be restrained in bad company.

Verse 23 (padma.6.5.23)

so'pi yuddhārthamasmābhiḥ sarvasainyena saṁvṛtaḥ āgamiṣyati vai nāśaṁ gamiṣyati tadaiva hi

'He too shall come to fight us, with his entire army, and shall go straight to his own destruction.'

Verse 24 (padma.6.5.24)

itīrayitvā virarāma vṛtrahā saritpaterātmajadūtamuccakaiḥ śaśaṁsa cāgatya samudrasūnordeveśvareṇoktamaśeṣamāditaḥ

Having said this, Vritrahan fell silent before the ocean's son's envoy; that envoy, returning, related to the ocean's son everything the Lord of gods had said, from beginning to end.

Verse 25 (padma.6.5.25)

nārada uvāca maheṁdra vacanaṁ śrutvā nijadūtamukhena ca samudrasūnuḥ saṁkruddhaḥ sarvaṁ sainyaṁ samāhvayat

Narada said: Hearing Mahendra's words from his own envoy's mouth, the ocean's son grew greatly enraged and summoned his entire army.

Verse 26 (padma.6.5.26)

rasātalasthitā daityāḥ ye ca bhūtalavāsinaḥ āyayuḥ sabalāstatra jālaṁdharamathājñayā

The demons dwelling in the netherworld and those dwelling on earth, all came with their forces to Jalandhara, at his command.

Verse 27 (padma.6.5.27)

prayāṇaprakrame siṁdhusūnoḥ sainyasya garjitaiḥ sphuṭaṁti nabhaso rājanpātālamakhilā diśaḥ

O king, at the setting-forth of the ocean's son's army, its roar seemed to split open the sky and every direction, down to the netherworld.

Verse 28 (padma.6.5.28)

hayanāgoṣṭravadanā biḍālamukhabhīṣaṇāḥ vyāghrasiṁhākhuvadanā vidyutsadṛśalocanāḥ

With faces of horse, elephant, and camel, terrible with the faces of cats, of tiger, lion, and mouse, their eyes like lightning —

Verse 29 (padma.6.5.29)

sarpakeśā mahādehāḥ kecitkhaṅgatanūruhāḥ anye ca paridhāvaṁti garjaṁti jaladasvanaiḥ

snake-haired, massive-bodied, some with sword-like body-hair, others running about and roaring like thunderclouds.

Verse 30 (padma.6.5.30)

rathagajahayapattisaṁkulaṁ samaravinodakadaṁba bhāsuram abjaśatasahasrakoṭināyakaṁ balamakhilaṁ ca tadā rarāja rājan

O king, that entire army — thronged with chariots, elephants, horses, and foot-soldiers, radiant with hosts of war-loving heroes, numbering in the countless millions — shone forth then.

Verse 31 (padma.6.5.31)

śatayojanavistīrṇaṁ vimānaṁ haṁsakoṭibhiḥ yuktaṁ bhūtisahasraughaṁ sarvavastuprapūritam

A hundred-yojana-wide aerial car, yoked with countless swans, laden with thousands of attendants, filled with every good thing —

Verse 32 (padma.6.5.32)

tadvimānaṁ samāruhya sadyo jālaṁdharo yayau madhyāhne maṁdaraṁ prāptaḥ prathame'hni balaiḥ saha

mounting that aerial car at once, Jalandhara set forth; by midday of the very first day he reached Mount Mandara with his army.

Verse 33 (padma.6.5.33)

khaṁḍitaṁ śibikāvāhairdalitaṁ bhūrikuṁjaraiḥ dvitīye divase meruṁ saṁprāpto balasaṁyutaḥ

Cutting a path trampled by countless elephants and broken by the palanquin-bearers, on the second day he reached Mount Meru with his army.

Verse 34 (padma.6.5.34)

ilāvṛtte tu śikhare tasthau tatkaṭakaṁ mahat atha daityādhipairbhagnaṁ khāṁḍavaṁ naṁdanaṁ vanam

His vast encampment halted on the peak in Ilavrita; then the lords of the demons went on to lay waste the Khandava and Nandana forests.

Verse 35 (padma.6.5.35)

śikharāṇi viśīrṇāni merordānavapuṁgavaiḥ saṁtānakeṣu vṛkṣeṣu baddhā hiṁdolamaṁcakān

The peaks of Meru were shattered by those foremost demons; they tied swings and platforms upon the wish-fulfilling trees.

Verse 36 (padma.6.5.36)

siddhāṁganābhiḥ sahitā remire daityapuṁgavāḥ kucakuṁkumatāṁbūla caṁdanāgarubhūṣaṇaiḥ

Those foremost demons sported there together with Siddha women, adorned with vermilion, betel, sandalwood, and aloe-wood.

Verse 37 (padma.6.5.37)

keśapāśacyutaiḥ puṣpaiḥ meroḥ saṁpūritā nadī sumeroḥ pūrvadigbhāgo gajaistasya vighaṭṭitaḥ

Meru's river was filled with flowers fallen from their loosened hair; the eastern side of Sumeru was trampled beneath his elephants.

Verse 38 (padma.6.5.38)

dakṣiṇaṁ ca rathaiśceruruttaraṁ paścimaṁ bhaṭaiḥ atha prasthāpayāmāsa daityāñjāladharo'suraḥ

They ranged the southern side with chariots, the north and west with soldiers; then the demon Jalandhara sent his demons further onward.

Verse 39 (padma.6.5.39)

maheṁdraśikharaṁ cānye yayurduṁdubhiniḥsvanaiḥ rājarājapurīṁ bhaṁktvā yamasya varuṇasya ca

Some went, with the sound of kettle-drums, toward Mahendra's peak, having destroyed the cities of Kubera, Yama, and Varuna.

Verse 40 (padma.6.5.40)

anyeṣāṁ lokapālānāmāyayuste'marāvatīm athotpātābhavannāke divyabhaumāṁtarikṣagāḥ

Having destroyed the cities of the other guardians of the directions, they came toward Amaravati; then evil omens began among the beings of sky, earth, and mid-space.

Verse 41 (padma.6.5.41)

rajaḥ papāta bahulaṁ tamastomo vijṛṁbhate tadā papāta kuliśaṁ karādiṁdrasya niṣprabham

Thick dust began to fall, a mass of darkness spread wide; then Indra's own thunderbolt, its splendor gone, fell from his hand.

Verse 42 (padma.6.5.42)

Seeing these terrifying omens in heaven, Mahendra said to his guru: 'What shall we do, to whom shall we go for refuge? Behold, war is now upon us.'

Verse 43 (padma.6.5.43)

Then Vachaspati said to the lord of the thirty gods: 'Take refuge at the feet of Vishnu, who dwells in Vaikuntha.'

Verse 44 (padma.6.5.44)

At his guru's word, Indra, together with the gods, swiftly went for refuge to the Vaikuntha abode of Vishnu, the slayer of Kaitabha.

Verse 45 (padma.6.5.45)

śaśaṁsa vāsudevāya vijayo dvārapālakaḥ jālaṁdharabhayatrastāḥ sarve devāḥ samāgatāḥ

The gatekeeper Vijaya announced to Vasudeva: 'All the gods, terrified by fear of Jalandhara, have come here.'

Verse 46 (padma.6.5.46)

śrīruvāca na vadhyo'sau mama bhrātā devārthe yudhyatā tvayā śāpito deva matprītyā vadhārho na bhaviṣyati

Sri said: 'Even while fighting for the gods, he must not be slain by you — he is my brother; for my love's sake let him only be cursed, O God — let him not become deserving of death.'

Verse 47 (padma.6.5.47)

iti śrīvacanaṁ śrutvā viṣṇustrailokyapālakaḥ athāruroha garuḍaṁ pakṣakṣepāvṛtāṁbaram

Hearing Sri's words, Vishnu, the protector of the three worlds, then mounted Garuda, whose beating wings covered the sky.

Verse 48 (padma.6.5.48)

Coming forth swiftly from the Vaikuntha abode, Hari beheld the gods, terrified by fear of Jalandhara, their splendor all gone.

Verse 49 (padma.6.5.49)

dadṛśuste surāḥ sarve hariṁ sāṁdraghanopamam śārṅgaśaṁkhagadāpadmavibhūṣitacaturbhujam

All those gods beheld Hari, resembling a dense rain-cloud, four-armed, adorned with bow, conch, mace, and lotus.

Verse 50 (padma.6.5.50)

stotraṁ paṭhitvā purataḥ prāheṁdraḥ saritāṁpateḥ jālaṁdhareṇātmajena bhagnaṁ deva triviṣṭapam

Having recited a hymn, Indra said before the ocean's own foe: 'O God, heaven has been destroyed by Jalandhara, who is the ocean's very own son.'

Verse 51 (padma.6.5.51)

tadiṁdravacanaṁ śrutvā'bhayaṁ datvā divaukasām vijetumasuraṁ devaiḥ saha reje surāṁtakṛt

Hearing Indra's words, and granting the heaven-dwellers freedom from fear, the destroyer of demons, together with the gods, shone forth, ready to conquer that demon.

Verse 52 (padma.6.5.52)

All the thirty gods gathered, some to the left, some to the right; Agni, dear to Svaha, stood to the right, mounted upon his ram.

Verse 54 (padma.6.5.54)

Jayanta, Shakra's son, mounted upon the elephant Airavata, and Indra upon Uchchaihshravas — both went before the Lord.

Verse 55 (padma.6.5.55)

Dhata, Aryama, Mitra, Varuna, Amsha, Bhaga, Indra, Vivasvan, Pusha, and Parjanya, remembered as the tenth —

Verse 56 (padma.6.5.56)

tatastvaṣṭā tato viṣṇū reje dhanyo jaghanyajaḥ ityete dvādaśādityā iṁdrasya purataḥ sthitāḥ

then Tvashta, and then Vishnu, blessed, reckoned last — thus these twelve Adityas stood shining before Indra.

Verse 59 (padma.6.5.59)
