Uttara Khanda · Chapter 61
Prabodhini Ekadashi of Kartika Shukla
Verse 1 (padma.6.61.1)
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca- śrutaṁ ramāyā māhātmyaṁ tvattaḥ kṛṣṇa yathātatham kārtike śuklapakṣe yā tāṁ me kathaya mānada
Yudhishthira said: O Krishna, I have heard from you the glory of Rama just as it is. O bestower of honor, now tell me the Ekadashi that falls in the bright fortnight of Kartika.
Verse 2 (padma.6.61.2)
śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca- śṛṇu rājanpravakṣyāmi śukle corjadale tu yā sā yathā nārade proktā brahmaṇā lokakāriṇā
Sri Krishna said: O king, listen, I shall tell of that which falls in the bright fortnight of the month of Urja [Kartika], just as Brahma, the maker of worlds, told it to Narada.
Verse 3 (padma.6.61.3)
nārada uvāca - prabodhinyāśca māhātmyaṁ vada vistarato mama yasyāṁ jāgarti goviṁdo dharmakarmapravarttakaḥ
Narada said: Tell me at length the glory of Prabodhini, on which Govinda, the establisher of righteous deeds, awakens.
Verse 4 (padma.6.61.4)
brahmovāca- prabodhinyāśca māhātmyaṁ pāpaghnaṁ puṇyavarddhanam muktipradaṁ subuddhīnāṁ śṛṇuṣva munisattama
Brahma said: O foremost of sages, listen to that glory of Prabodhini, which destroys sin, increases merit, and grants liberation to the wise.
Verse 5 (padma.6.61.5)
tāvadgarjaṁti tīrthāni āsamudrasarāṁsi ca yāvatprabodhinī viṣṇostithirnāyāti kārtike
Until Vishnu's Prabodhini tithi arrives in Kartika, all the sacred crossings and lakes as far as the ocean roar, [as though in anticipation].
Verse 6 (padma.6.61.6)
tāvadgarjaṁti vipreṁdra gaṁgābhāgīrathī kṣitau yāvannāyāti pāpaghnī kārtike haribodhinī
O foremost of brahmins, until the sin-destroying Haribodhini [awakener of Hari] arrives in Kartika, even the Bhagirathi Ganga roars upon the earth.
Verse 7 (padma.6.61.7)
aśvamedhasahasrāṇi rājasūyaśatāni ca ekenaivopavāsena prabodhinyā labhennaraḥ
The fruit of a thousand Ashvamedhas and a hundred Rajasuya sacrifices - a man obtains that from a single fast of Prabodhini alone.
Verse 8 (padma.6.61.8)
yaddurllabhaṁ yadaprāpyaṁ trailokyasya na gocaram tadapyaprārthitaṁ putraṁ dadāti haribodhinī
Whatever is difficult to obtain, whatever is unattainable, whatever is nowhere to be seen in the three worlds - even that, Haribodhini bestows, unasked, in the form of a son.
Verse 9 (padma.6.61.9)
aiśvaryaṁ saṁpadaṁ prajñāṁ rājyaṁ ca sukhasaṁpadaḥ dadātyupoṣitā bhaktyā janebhyo haribodhinī
Haribodhini, fasted with devotion, bestows upon people majesty, wealth, wisdom, kingdom, and prosperity of happiness.
Verse 10 (padma.6.61.10)
merumandaramātrāṇi pāpānyuktāni yāni ca ekenaivopavāsena dahate pāpanāśinī
Even sins declared to be as vast as Mount Meru and Mount Mandara - this sin-destroying vow burns them away with but a single fast.
Verse 11 (padma.6.61.11)
pūrvajanmasahasreṣu yatpāpaṁ samupārjitam niśi jāgaraṇaṁ cāsyā dahate tūlarāśivat
Whatever sin has been accumulated over a thousand former births - its night-vigil burns that away, like a heap of cotton set aflame.
Verse 12 (padma.6.61.12)
upavāsaṁ prabodhinyāṁ yaḥ karoti svabhāvataḥ vidhivanmuniśārdūla yathoktaṁ labhate phalam
O tiger among sages, whatever man observes the fast of Prabodhini naturally and according to the rite, he obtains the fruit exactly as declared.
Verse 13 (padma.6.61.13)
yathoktaṁ kurute yastu vidhivatsukṛtaṁ naraḥ svalpaṁ munivaraśreṣṭha merutulyaṁ bhavetphalam
O foremost of sages, whatever man performs this meritorious deed exactly as prescribed - his fruit, however small the deed, becomes as vast as Mount Meru.
Verse 14 (padma.6.61.14)
vidhihīnaṁ tu yaḥ kuryātsukṛtaṁ merumātrakam aṇumātraṁ tadāpnoti phalaṁ dharmasya nārada
But, O Narada, whoever performs a meritorious deed, even one as great as Mount Meru, without the proper rite, obtains the fruit of that dharma only as small as an atom.
Verse 15 (padma.6.61.15)
ye dhyāyaṁti manovṛtyā ye kariṣyaṁti bodhinīm vasaṁti pitaro hṛṣṭā viṣṇuloke ca tasya vai
Those who contemplate it with their mind, and those who will observe Bodhini [Ekadashi], their ancestors dwell joyfully in that very realm of Vishnu.
Verse 16 (padma.6.61.16)
vimuktā nārakairduḥkhairyāti viṣṇoḥ paraṁ padam kṛtvā tu pātakaṁ ghoraṁ brahmahatyādikaṁ naraḥ
They become freed from the sufferings of hell and attain the supreme state of Vishnu. Even a man who has committed terrible sins such as killing a brahmin,
Verse 17 (padma.6.61.17)
kṛtvā tu jāgaraṁ viṣṇorddhautapāpo bhavennaraḥ duṣprāpyaṁ yatphalaṁ vipra aśvamedhādikairmakhaiḥ
by keeping Vishnu's night-vigil becomes one whose sin has been washed away. O brahmin, the fruit so difficult to attain even through sacrifices such as the Ashvamedha,
Verse 18 (padma.6.61.18)
prāpyate tatsukhenaiva prabodhinyāstu jāgare āplutya sarvatīrtheṣu pradattvā kāṁcanaṁ mahīm
that is obtained with ease merely by the vigil of Prabodhini. Even the fruit obtained by bathing in all sacred waters and giving away a golden earth,
Verse 19 (padma.6.61.19)
tatphalaṁ samavāpnoti yatkṛtvā jāgaraṁ hareḥ jātaḥ sa eva sukṛtī kulaṁ tenaiva pāvitam
that same fruit is obtained by keeping the vigil of Hari. That man is deemed meritorious, and by him alone is his lineage purified,
Verse 20 (padma.6.61.20)
kārtike muniśārdūla kṛtā yena prabodhinī yathā dhruvaṁ nṛṇāṁ mṛtyurdhanaṁ gātraṁ tathādhruvam
who has observed Prabodhini in Kartika, O tiger among sages. As death is certain for men, so too are wealth and the body uncertain.
Verse 21 (padma.6.61.21)
iti jñātvā muniśreṣṭha kartavyaṁ vaiṣṇavaṁ dinam yāni kāni ca tīrthāni trailokye saṁbhavaṁti ca
Knowing this, O foremost of sages, the Vaishnava day should be observed. Whatever sacred places exist in all the three worlds,
Verse 22 (padma.6.61.22)
tāni tasya gṛhe samyagyaḥ karoti prabodhinīm kiṁ tasya bahubhiḥ puṇyaiḥ kṛtā yena prabodhinī
all of them come to reside in the very home of one who properly observes Prabodhini - what further need has he of many other merits, who has already observed Prabodhini?
Verse 23 (padma.6.61.23)
putrapautrapradā hyeṣā kārtike haribodhinī sa jñānī ca sa yogī ca sa tapasvī jiteṁdriyaḥ
In Kartika, this Haribodhini bestows sons and grandsons. That man is a man of knowledge, he is a yogi, he is an ascetic with senses conquered,
Verse 24 (padma.6.61.24)
bhogo mokṣaśca tasyāsti upāste haribodhinīm viṣṇoḥ priyatarā hyeṣā dharmasārasahāyinī
who worships Haribodhini - both worldly enjoyment and liberation belong to him. This vow is exceedingly dear to Vishnu and aids in the very essence of dharma.
Verse 25 (padma.6.61.25)
yaḥ karoti naro bhaktyā bhuktibhāksa bhavennaraḥ prabodhinīmupoṣitvā garbhe na viśate naraḥ
Whatever man performs it with devotion becomes a sharer in worldly enjoyment. Having fasted on Prabodhini, a man does not enter the womb again.
Verse 26 (padma.6.61.26)
sarvadharmānparityajya tasmātkurvīta nārada karmaṇā manasā vācā pāpaṁ yatsamupārjitam
Therefore, O Narada, this should be observed even in preference to all other observances. Whatever sin has been acquired by deed, by mind, or by speech,
Verse 27 (padma.6.61.27)
tatkṣālayati goviṁdaḥ prabodhinyāṁ tu jāgare snānaṁ dānaṁ japaḥ pūjāṁ samuddiśya janārdanam
Govinda washes that away in the vigil of Prabodhini. Whatever bathing, giving, chanting, and worship a man performs, directed toward Janardana,
Verse 28 (padma.6.61.28)
naro yatkurute vatsa prabodhinyāṁ tadakṣayam yercayaṁti narāstasyāṁ bhaktyā devaṁ ca mādhavam
O child, whatever a man does on Prabodhini becomes imperishable. Those who worship the god Madhava with devotion on that day,
Verse 29 (padma.6.61.29)
samupoṣya pramucyaṁte pāpaistaiḥ śatajanmajaiḥ mahāvratamidaṁ putra mahāpāpaughanāśanam
by fasting, become freed from sins born of a hundred births. O son, this great vow destroys the whole mass of the gravest sins.
Verse 30 (padma.6.61.30)
prabodhavāsaraṁ viṣṇorvidhivatsamupoṣayet vratenānena deveśaṁ paritoṣya janārdanam
One should fast, according to the rite, on Vishnu's day of awakening; having satisfied the Lord of gods, Janardana, through this vow,
Verse 31 (padma.6.61.31)
virājayandiśaḥ sarvāḥ prayāti harimaṁdiram kartavyaiṣā prayatnena naraiḥ kāṁtidhanārthibhiḥ
he proceeds toward the abode of Hari, illuminating every direction. Men desiring beauty and wealth should observe it with careful effort.
Verse 32 (padma.6.61.32)
bālye yatsaṁcitaṁ pāpaṁ yauvane vārddhake tathā śatajanmakṛtaṁ pāpaṁ svalpaṁ vā yadi vā bahu
Whatever sin has been accumulated in childhood, in youth, and in old age too - sin committed over a hundred births, whether small or great,
Verse 33 (padma.6.61.33)
tatkṣālayati goviṁdaścāsyāmabhyarcito nṛṇām dhanadhānyavahā puṇyā sarvapāpaharā parā
Govinda, worshipped on this day, washes away that sin of men. This is the supreme Ekadashi that brings wealth and grain, is meritorious, and removes every sin.
Verse 34 (padma.6.61.34)
tāmupoṣya harerbhaktyā durllabhaṁ na bhavetkvacit caṁdrasūryoparāge ca yatphalaṁ parikīrtitam
By fasting on it with devotion to Hari, nothing at all remains difficult to obtain. Whatever fruit is declared for a lunar or solar eclipse,
Verse 35 (padma.6.61.35)
tatsahasraguṇaṁ proktaṁ prabodhinyāṁ prajāgare snānaṁ dānaṁ japo homaḥ svādhyāyo'bhyarcanaṁ hareḥ
that same fruit is declared to be a thousandfold in the vigil of Prabodhini. Bathing, giving, chanting, the fire-offering, sacred study, and the worship of Hari -
Verse 36 (padma.6.61.36)
tatsarvaṁ koṭiguṇitaṁ prabodhinyāṁ kṛtaṁ tu yat janmaprabhṛtiyatpuṇyaṁ nareṇopārjitaṁ bhavet
all of that, when performed on Prabodhini, becomes a crore-fold. Whatever merit a man has acquired from birth onward,
Verse 37 (padma.6.61.37)
vṛthā bhavati tatsarvamakṛtvā kārtike vratam akṛtvā niyamaṁ viṣṇoḥ kārtikaṁ yaḥ kṣipennaraḥ
all of it becomes fruitless if the vow of Kartika is not observed. A man who lets the month of Kartika pass in vain, without observing Vishnu's rule,
Verse 38 (padma.6.61.38)
na janmārjitapuṇyasya phalaṁ prāpnoti nārada tasmātsarvaprayatnena devadevaṁ janārdanam
O Narada, does not obtain the fruit of the merit acquired throughout his whole life. Therefore, with every effort, the God of gods, Janardana, should be served,
Verse 39 (padma.6.61.39)
upaseveta vipreṁdra sarvakāmaphalapradam parānnaṁ varjayedyastu kārtike viṣṇutatparaḥ
O foremost of brahmins, who bestows the fruit of every desire. Whoever, devoted to Vishnu, renounces food given by another during Kartika,
Verse 40 (padma.6.61.40)
parānnavarjanādvatsa cāṁdrāyaṇaphalaṁ labhet nityaṁ śāstravinodena kārtike madhusūdanaḥ
O child, by renouncing another's food he obtains the fruit of the Chandrayana vow. Ever, in Kartika, through the delight of scriptural discourse, Madhusudana
Verse 41 (padma.6.61.41)
burns away all his sins, and he obtains the fruit of ten thousand sacrifices. He [Vishnu] is not so satisfied by sacrifices, by gifts, by rites such as Vajapeya,
Verse 42 (padma.6.61.42)
yathā śāstrakathālāpaiḥ kārtike madhusūdanaḥ ye kurvaṁti kathāṁ viṣṇorye śṛṇvaṁti śubhānvitāḥ
as he is pleased by scriptural discourse in Kartika. Those who tell the tale of Vishnu, and those who, filled with auspicious feeling, listen to it,
Verse 43 (padma.6.61.43)
ślokārddhaṁ ślokapādaṁ vā kārtike gośataṁ phalam sarvadharmānparityajya kārtike keśavāgrataḥ
in Kartika, even by half a verse or a quarter of a verse, obtain the fruit of donating a hundred cows. In Kartika, before Keshava, abandoning all other observances,
Verse 44 (padma.6.61.44)
śāstrāvadhāraṇaṁ kāryaṁ śrotavyaṁ ca mahāmune śreyasā lobhabuddhyā ca yaḥ karoti hareḥ kathām
O great sage, one should hear and study the scriptures. Whoever, moved by the aspiration for welfare, without a greedy mind, narrates the tale of Hari,
Verse 45 (padma.6.61.45)
kārtike muniśārdūla kulānāṁ tārayecchatam niyamena naro yastu śṛṇute vaiṣṇavīṁ kathām
O tiger among sages, he delivers a hundred generations of his lineage in Kartika. Whatever man, observing due discipline, listens to the Vaishnava tale,
Verse 46 (padma.6.61.46)
kārtike tu viśeṣeṇa gosahasraphalaṁ labhet prabodhavāsare viṣṇoḥ śṛṇute yo hareḥ kathām
he obtains, especially in Kartika, the fruit of donating a thousand cows. Whoever, on Vishnu's day of awakening, listens to the tale of Hari,
Verse 47 (padma.6.61.47)
saptadvīpavatī dāne tatphalaṁ labhate mune śrutvā viṣṇukathāṁ divyāṁ ye'rcayaṁti kathāvidam
O sage, obtains the fruit of donating the earth together with its seven continents. Those who, having heard the divine tale of Vishnu, worship the reciter of that tale,
Verse 48 (padma.6.61.48)
svaśaktyā muniśārdūla teṣāṁ loko'kṣayaḥ smṛtaḥ gītaśāstravinodena kārtikaṁ yo nayennaraḥ
O tiger among sages, their world is declared imperishable, according to their means. Whatever man passes the month of Kartika in the joy of song and scripture,
Verse 49 (padma.6.61.49)
na tasya punarāvṛttirmayā dṛṣṭā kalipriya gītaṁ nṛtyaṁ ca vādyaṁ ca bhavyāṁ viṣṇukathāṁ mune
O one dear even in the Kali age, I have never seen him return [to rebirth]. O sage, song, dance, music, and the auspicious tale of Vishnu -
Verse 50 (padma.6.61.50)
yaḥ karoti sa puṇyātmā trailokyopari saṁsthitaḥ bahupuṣpairbahuphalaiḥ karpūrāgurukuṁkumaiḥ
whoever performs these, that meritorious soul is established above the three worlds. With many flowers, many fruits, camphor, aguru and vermilion,
Verse 51 (padma.6.61.51)
hareḥ pūjā vidhātavyā kārtike bodhavāsare yasmātpuṇyamasaṁkhyātaṁ prāpyate munisattama
the worship of Hari should be performed on the day of awakening in Kartika. O foremost of sages, the countless merit that comes from this -
Verse 52 (padma.6.61.52)
phalairnānāvidhairdravyaiḥ prabodhinyāṁ tu jāgare śaṁkhe toyaṁ samādāya argho deyo janārdane
that merit, with various fruits and articles offered in the vigil of Prabodhini, [is even greater]. Taking water in a conch, arghya should be offered to Janardana.
Verse 53 (padma.6.61.53)
yatphalaṁ sarvatīrtheṣu sarvadāneṣu yatphalam tatphalaṁ koṭiguṇitaṁ dattvārghaṁ bodhavāsare
Whatever fruit lies in all sacred crossings, whatever fruit lies in all gifts - that fruit becomes a crore-fold by offering arghya on the day of awakening.
Verse 54 (padma.6.61.54)
gurupūjā tataḥ kāryā bhojanācchādanādibhiḥ dakṣiṇābhiśca devarṣe tuṣṭyarthaṁ cakrapāṇinaḥ
After that, O divine sage, for the satisfaction of the discus-bearer, the teacher should be worshipped with food, clothing and the like, and with gifts.
Verse 55 (padma.6.61.55)
bhāgavataṁ śṛṇute yastu purāṇaṁ ca paṭhennaraḥ pratyakṣaraṁ bhavettasya kapilādānajaṁ phalam
Whatever man listens to the Bhagavata and reads the Purana obtains, for every single syllable, the fruit of the gift of a Kapila cow.
Verse 56 (padma.6.61.56)
kārttike muniśārdūla svaśaktyā vaiṣṇavaṁ vratam yaḥ karoti yathoktaṁ tu muktistasya suniścalā
O tiger among sages, whatever man in Kartika observes the Vaishnava vow, exactly as prescribed and according to his means, his liberation is assured.
Verse 57 (padma.6.61.57)
ketakyā ekapatreṇa pūjito garuḍadhvajaḥ samāḥ sahasraṁ suprīto bhavati madhusūdanaḥ
By worshipping Garuda-bannered Vishnu with even a single leaf of the ketaki flower, Madhusudana remains exceedingly pleased for a thousand years.
Verse 58 (padma.6.61.58)
agastikusumairdevaṁ pūjayedyo janārdanam darśanāttasya devarṣe narakāgniḥ praṇaśyati
Whoever worships the god Janardana with agasti flowers, O divine sage, at the mere sight of him the fire of hell is destroyed.

tulasīdalāni puṣpāṇi ye yacchaṁti janārdane kārtike sakalaṁ vatsa pāpaṁ janmāyutaṁ dahet
Those who, in Kartika, offer tulasi leaves and flowers to Janardana, O child, burn away the entire sin of ten thousand births.
Verse 62 (padma.6.61.62)
dṛṣṭā spṛṣṭātha vā dhyātā kīrtitā nāmatastu tā ropitā siṁcitā nityaṁ pūjitā tulasī śubhā

yāvacchākhāpraśākhābhirbījapuṣpadalairmune ropitā tulasī puṁbhirvarddhate vasudhātale

Verse 66 (padma.6.61.66)
yatphalaṁ sarvapuṣpeṣu sarvapatreṣu nārada tulasīdalena caikena kārtike prāpyate tu tat

saṁprāptaṁ kārttikaṁ dṛṣṭvā niyamena janārdanaḥ pūjanīyo mahāviṣṇuḥ komalaistulasīdalaiḥ

iṣṭvā kratuśatairdevāndattvā dānānyanekaśaḥ tulasīdalaistu tatpuṇyaṁ kārtike keśavārcane
Whatever merit is obtained by worshipping the gods with hundreds of sacrifices and by giving gifts many times over - that same merit is obtained by worshipping Keshava with tulasi leaves in Kartika.
