nārada uvāca- cāturmāsyāṁ tu niyamā ye kecidbhuvi viśrutāḥ tānahaṁ śrotumicchāmi kathayasva maheśvara

Narada said: Whatever rules are renowned upon the earth concerning Chaturmasya [the four holy months], I wish to hear them. O Maheshvara, kindly tell me.

Verse 2 (padma.6.64.2)

What should be done during Chaturmasya, when Hari Janardana sleeps? In the renunciation of the six flavors, in letting the nails and hair grow, and in other observances too, O lord, tell me what fruit each bears.

Verse 3 (padma.6.64.3)

mahādeva uvāca- śṛṇu tvamiha devarṣe kathayāmi savistaram āṣāḍhasya site pakṣe ekādaśyāmupoṣitaḥ

cāturmāsyavratānīha gṛhṇīyādbhaktipūrvakam bhūmiśayyāsamārūḍho yoganidrāṁ gate harau

one should here take up the vow of Chaturmasya with devotion. Taking a bed upon the ground, while Hari has gone into yogic slumber,

Verse 6 (padma.6.64.6)

nayeta caturo māsānyāvadbhavati kārtikī pratiṣṭhā na pravarttaṁte tathā yajñādikāḥ kriyāḥ

one should pass the time thus for four months, until Kartika arrives. During this period, consecrations and rites such as sacrifices are not performed,

adhimāse tu patite tadā caiṣa vidhikramaḥ sthāpayetpratimāṁ viṣṇoḥ śaṁkhacakragadādharīm

When an intercalary month falls, this is then the proper order of rite - an image of Vishnu, bearing the conch, discus, and mace, should be established.

Verse 12 (padma.6.64.12)

O Narada, having thus established that image of Vishnu, one should then, before it, take up the discipline with one's own spoken word.

Verse 19 (padma.6.64.19)

nityaṁ karma caritvā tu viṣṇoragre jitātmavān teṣāṁ phalāni vakṣyāmi tatkartṝṇāṁ pṛthakpṛthak

bhuṁkte śilāyāṁ yo nityaṁ tasya puṇyaṁ prayāgajam dharmodayajalatyāgī na rogaiḥ paribhūyate

One who eats from a copper vessel obtains the fruit of the Naimisha forest. Having renounced the bronze vessel, one should use a leaf-vessel instead.

Verse 40 (padma.6.64.40)

Eating in a brahma-vessel [leaf-vessel] is declared equal to the Chandrayana vow; O wise one, for one who eats once each time from leaf-vessels,

Verse 43 (padma.6.64.43)

trirātreṇa samaṁ proktaṁ mahāpātakanāśanam ekādaśyupavāsena yatpuṇyaṁ parikīrtitam

sarvadānaphalaṁ caiva sarvatīrthaphalaṁ labhet na cāpi narakaṁ paśyetpadmapatreṣu bhojanāt

the fruit of all gifts and the fruit of all sacred crossings are obtained from that alone. By eating from lotus-leaves, a man does not even behold hell.

Verse 45 (padma.6.64.45)

The brahmin goes to Vaikuntha, and other people attain heaven. This is a great tree of Brahman, destroying sin and granting every desire.

Verse 46 (padma.6.64.46)

madhyamaṁ varjitaṁ patraṁ śūdrajāternṛpottama bhuṁjannarakamāpnoti yāvadiṁdrāścaturdaśa

O best of kings, the middle leaf is forbidden to those of shudra birth; eating from it, one suffers hell for the duration of fourteen Indras.

Verse 47 (padma.6.64.47)

varjayenmadhyamaṁ patraṁ śeṣapatreṣu bhojanam madhyapatre ca yaḥ śūdro bhojanaṁ kurute dvija

The middle leaf should be avoided, and one should eat only from the remaining leaves. O brahmin, the shudra who eats from the middle leaf,

Verse 48 (padma.6.64.48)

kapilāṁ brahmaṇe dattvā śuddhirbhavati nānyathā kapilāṁ dohayedyastu śūdro bhuṁkte nije gṛhe

his purification comes only when he gives a Kapila cow to a brahmin, and never otherwise. A shudra who milks a Kapila cow and drinks that milk in his own home,

Verse 49 (padma.6.64.49)

daśavarṣasahasrāṇi viṣṭhāyāṁ jāyate kṛmiḥ kṛmiyonivinirmuktaḥ paśuyonimavāpnuyāt

is born as a worm in excrement for ten thousand years; freed from the worm's womb, he obtains the womb of a beast.

Verse 50 (padma.6.64.50)

kapilaṁ yohyanaḍvāhaṁ śūdro bhūtvātra vāhayet yāvaṁti tasya romāṇi tāvadvarṣāṇi nārada

O Narada, the shudra who yokes a Kapila cow like a draught-ox - for as many years as there are hairs upon her,

Verse 51 (padma.6.64.51)

kuṁbhīpākeṣu pacyeta sa naro nātra saṁśayaḥ ajā caiva gṛhe tasya śūdrasya ca viśeṣataḥ

he is cooked in the Kumbhipaka hell - of this there is no doubt. And especially, if there is a she-goat in that shudra's house,

Verse 52 (padma.6.64.52)

tasyā vai dugdhapānena śūdro yātīha rauravam brāhmaṇaiḥ saha vyāpāro yasya śūdrasya dṛśyate

by drinking her milk too the shudra goes in this world to the Raurava hell. That shudra who is seen engaged in trade together with brahmins,

Verse 53 (padma.6.64.53)

sa vipro vedabāhyaḥ syācchūdraḥ kaulika ucyate vyāpāre prerito vipraḥ śūdrājñāṁ ca karoti yaḥ

that brahmin becomes cast out from the Veda, and the shudra is called 'kaulika'. The brahmin who, driven to trade, obeys the command of a shudra,

Verse 54 (padma.6.64.54)

yāvatpadāni calate tāvadbhavati nārakī udakārthaṁ tu yo vipraḥ śūdreṇa preṣito gṛhe

for as many steps as he walks, for that long he becomes a dweller of hell. A brahmin who is sent by a shudra to fetch water in his house,

Verse 55 (padma.6.64.55)

tadudakaṁ madyatulyaṁ pītvā vai narakaṁ vrajet śūdreṇa sarvadā nityaṁ dānaṁ deyaṁ dvijanmane

by drinking that water, as though it were liquor, he goes to hell. A shudra should always give gifts to brahmins constantly,

Verse 56 (padma.6.64.56)

teṣāṁ caiva tu vai bhaktiḥ karttavyā ca viśeṣataḥ ihaloke sukhaṁ bhuktvā paralokaṁ ca gacchati

and should show devotion to them especially; thus he enjoys happiness in this world and goes to the next.

Verse 57 (padma.6.64.57)

pāṁcabhautikametaddhi anarthakamudāhṛtam ato deyaṁ hi gurave yato'naṁtaphalaṁ labhet

This body, made of the five elements, is declared to be without lasting worth; therefore gifts should be given to the teacher, by which infinite fruit is obtained.

Verse 58 (padma.6.64.58)

asminkaliyuge ghore pāpācāre durātmanaḥ niṁdāṁ kurvaṁti vipreṁdra janānāṁ puṇyakarmaṇām

In this terrible Kali age, O foremost of brahmins, wicked, sinful men slander those engaged in meritorious deeds.

Verse 59 (padma.6.64.59)

niṁdayā labhate duḥkhaṁ yāvadābhūtasaṁplavam nānādharmāḥ pravarttaṁte kalau caiva mahāmate

By slandering, one obtains suffering until the very dissolution of the ages. O great-minded one, in the Kali age various kinds of dharma come into practice.

Verse 60 (padma.6.64.60)

dharmo'yaṁ durllabho loke dharmakāmārthamokṣadaḥ bhūmiśāyī bhavedyastu naraḥ ko'pi mahītale

This dharma is rare in the world, one that grants dharma, artha, kama and moksha. Whatever man sleeps upon the ground on this earth,

Verse 61 (padma.6.64.61)

daśavarṣasahasrāṇi na rogaiḥ paripīḍyate bahuputro dhanairyukto hyakuṣṭhī jāyate naraḥ

he is not afflicted by disease for ten thousand years; he is born with many sons, endowed with wealth, and free of leprosy.

Verse 62 (padma.6.64.62)

naktabhojī naro yastu tīrthayātrāphalaṁ labhet ayācitena cāpnoti vāpīkūpakriṁyā phalam

A man who eats but once, at night, obtains the fruit of pilgrimage; without even asking, he obtains the fruit of constructing wells and step-wells.

Verse 63 (padma.6.64.63)

varjayedyastu vai drohaṁ prāṇahiṁsāparāṅmukhaḥ ahiṁsā paramo dharma iti vedeṣu gīyate

[These fruits belong to] whoever renounces treachery and turns his face away from harming life. It is sung in the Vedas that non-violence is the highest dharma.

Verse 64 (padma.6.64.64)

dānaṁ dayā dama iti sarvatra hi śrutaṁ mayā tasmātsarvaprayatnena kāryaṁ vai mahatāmapi

Giving, compassion, and self-restraint - this alone I have heard proclaimed everywhere. Therefore even great persons should practice this with every effort.

Verse 65 (padma.6.64.65)

gurave ye prayacchaṁti śarīraṁ putrapautrakam tatra dānaprabhāvena viṣṇorvallabhatāmiyāt

Those who offer their own body, and even their sons and grandsons, to the teacher, by the power of that gift become exceedingly dear to Vishnu.

Verse 66 (padma.6.64.66)

śūdreṇa dīkṣito yastu śūdraḥ śūdreṇa dīkṣitaḥ ubhau tau pāpinau proktau yāvadābhūtasaṁplavam

A shudra who receives initiation from another shudra, and a shudra who gives initiation to another shudra - both are declared sinners until the very dissolution of the ages.

Verse 67 (padma.6.64.67)

hiṁsāmatiṁ yadādatte śūdro vai pāpasattamaḥ ekaviṁśatikulaṁ tena narakaṁ pratipātyate

When some most sinful shudra takes up the intention of violence, by him twenty-one generations of his lineage are cast down into hell.

Verse 68 (padma.6.64.68)

kalau pākhaṁḍinaḥ śūdrā dṛśyaṁte bahavo bhuvi teṣāṁ saṁbhāṣaṇādeva narako bhavati dvija

In the Kali age many hypocritical shudras are seen upon the earth, O brahmin; by merely conversing with them one attains hell.

Verse 69 (padma.6.64.69)

brahmajñānaratā ye ca gāyatrījāpino dvija teṣāṁ darśanamātreṇa brahmahatyā dine dine

Those brahmins who are absorbed in the knowledge of Brahman and who chant the Gayatri, O brahmin, by the mere sight of them, even the sin of killing a brahmin committed daily [is destroyed].

Verse 70 (padma.6.64.70)

śaṁkhacakradharā viprā viṣṇudharmeṣu saṁmatāḥ vedadharmaratā nityaṁ paṁktipāvanapāvanāḥ

Those brahmins who bear the conch and discus, honored in Vishnu's dharma, ever absorbed in the dharma of the Vedas, holy purifiers of the row of diners -

Verse 71 (padma.6.64.71)

cāturmāsyamidaṁ karma karttavyaṁ taiḥ sadā naraiḥ kimanyadbahunoktena bhūyobhūyaśca vāḍava

such men must always surely perform this Chaturmasya rite. O brahmin, what use is there in saying much more, again and again, on this matter?

Verse 72 (padma.6.64.72)

te dhanyāḥ pṛthivī madhye narā ye vaiṣṇavā bhuvi teṣāṁ kulaṁ dhanyatamaṁ jātirdhanyatamā smṛtā

Those men are truly blessed upon this earth who are Vaishnavas upon the earth; their lineage is held most blessed, and their birth most blessed.

Verse 73 (padma.6.64.73)

madhu bhakṣayate yastu supte deve janārdane mahatpāpaṁ bhavettasya varjane yacchṛṇuṣva tat

Whoever partakes of honey while the god Janardana sleeps incurs a great sin. Listen to the fruit that comes from renouncing it -

Verse 74 (padma.6.64.74)

sarvayajñaiśca vividhairyatphalaṁ tadavāpnuyāt dāḍimaṁ mātuligaṁ ca nālikeraṁ ca varjayet

that same fruit which is obtained from all the various sacrifices. Pomegranate, citron, and coconut should be renounced.

Verse 75 (padma.6.64.75)

devo vaimāniko bhūtvā hyaṁte viṣṇupadaṁ vrajet vittavānsubhagaścaiva kule śrīmati jāyate

He, becoming a chariot-dwelling god, attains in the end the state of Vishnu; he is born wealthy, fortunate, and into a prosperous family.

Verse 76 (padma.6.64.76)

yaḥ kṣipedekabhaktena naro māsacatuṣṭayam yāvaṁti ca muhūrtāni uditoditabhāskare

A man who passes four months eating but once each day, for as many muhurtas as pass while the sun rises upon rising,

Verse 77 (padma.6.64.77)

tādvarṣasahasrāṇi viṣṇuloke mahīyate vrīhīṁśca yavagodhūmānvarjayedyastu mānavaḥ

for that many thousand years he is honored in the realm of Vishnu. A man who renounces rice, barley, and wheat,

Verse 78 (padma.6.64.78)

aśvamedhādike kṛte vidhivadvai sadakṣiṇe yatphalaṁ munibhiḥ proktaṁ tatphalaṁ labhate naraḥ

obtains that same fruit which the sages declare for performing sacrifices such as the Ashvamedha, duly, with proper gifts to the priests.

Verse 79 (padma.6.64.79)

dhanadhānyasamāyukto bahuputraśca jāyate tulasītiladarbhaiśca ye kurvaṁti ca tarpaṇam

He is born endowed with wealth and grain, and with many sons. Those who perform tarpana [offerings to ancestors] with tulasi, sesame, and kusha grass,

Verse 80 (padma.6.64.80)

tatphalaṁ koṭiguṇitaṁ cāturmāsye viśeṣataḥ yadā supte hṛṣīkeśe kuryāccaitattrayānvitam

their fruit becomes especially a crore-fold during Chaturmasya. When Hrishikesha lies asleep, whoever performs these three [tulasi, sesame, kusha] together,

Verse 81 (padma.6.64.81)

te'pi yugasahasrāṇi modaṁte viṣṇusaṁnidhau padaṁ vā padamarddhaṁ vā ṛcāṁ cārddhaṛcāṁ tathā

they too rejoice near Vishnu for thousands of ages. Even a single verse-foot, half a verse-foot, or a single verse or half a verse,

Verse 82 (padma.6.64.82)

viṣṇvagre ye pragāyaṁti muktāste vai na saṁśayaḥ maithunaṁ varjayedyastu supte deve janārdane

whoever sings that before Vishnu is certainly liberated - of this there is no doubt. Whoever renounces sexual union while the god Janardana sleeps,

Verse 83 (padma.6.64.83)

ekamanvaṁtaraṁ so'pi viṣṇuloke mahīyate dadhidugdhaṁ tathā takraṁ guḍaṁ śākaṁ tathaiva ca

he too is honored in the realm of Vishnu for an entire manvantara. Curd, milk, buttermilk, jaggery, and greens too -

Verse 84 (padma.6.64.84)

varjanādeva bho vipra muktibhāgī na saṁśayaḥ snānamāmalakenaiva ye kurvaṁti ca mānavāḥ

O brahmin, by renouncing these alone a man surely becomes a sharer in liberation. Those men who bathe only with amla [gooseberry],

Verse 85 (padma.6.64.85)

dinedine mahatpuṇyaṁ prāpnuvaṁti ca te mune dhātrīphalaṁ pāpaharaṁ pravadaṁti manīṣiṇaḥ

O sage, obtain great merit every single day. The wise declare the amla fruit to be a remover of sin.

Verse 86 (padma.6.64.86)

trailokyatāraṇārthāya nirmitā brāhmaṇā purā saṁdhyāmaunaṁ caredyastu bhuṁkte māsacatuṣṭayam

Brahmins were created long ago for the deliverance of the three worlds. Whoever observes silence at twilight and eats thus for four months,

Verse 87 (padma.6.64.87)

manvaṁtarāṇi catvāri vaikuṁṭhe modate punaḥ svayaṁpākī naro yastu bhuṁkte māsacatuṣṭayam

he again rejoices in Vaikuntha for four manvantaras. A man who cooks his own food and eats it thus for four months,

Verse 88 (padma.6.64.88)

daśavarṣasahasrāṇi iṁdraloke mahīyate caturo vārṣikānmāsānmaunaṁ caiva samācaret

he is honored in Indra's realm for ten thousand years. A man who observes silence as well throughout the four monsoon months,

Verse 89 (padma.6.64.89)

sa ca viṣṇupuraṁ gacchedbrāhmaṁ ca tadanaṁtaram maunabhojī naro yastu kadācinnāvasīdati

he goes to the city of Vishnu, and after that to Brahmaloka as well. A man who eats in silence never suffers,

Verse 90 (padma.6.64.90)

maunena bhuṁjamānāstu rākṣasāstridivaṁ gatāḥ kṛmikīṭasamāyuktaṁ pakvānnamaśucī bhavet

[for] even rakshasas who ate in silence went to heaven. Cooked food infested with worms and insects is likewise deemed impure,

Verse 91 (padma.6.64.91)

gavāṁ māṁsasamaṁ jñeyamannaṁ cāpi dvijottama tadannamaśuci jñeyaṁ grasate mānuṣo yadi

O best of brahmins - and [food eaten while talking] should be known as equal to the flesh of a cow; that food should be deemed impure, if a man swallows it [while conversing].

Verse 92 (padma.6.64.92)

etadvai bhojanaṁ proktaṁ rākṣasānāṁ priyaṁ sadā toṣito hi purā brahmā tena dattaṁ mahātmanā

This manner of eating is declared to be ever dear to rakshasas. Long ago, to satisfy Brahma, the great-souled Brahma himself gave this [rule of silent eating].

Verse 93 (padma.6.64.93)

maunena bhojayitvā tu svargaṁ prāptā na saṁśayaḥ saṁjalpanbhuṁjate yastu tenānnamaśucī bhavet

By feeding others in silence, they certainly attained heaven. Whoever eats while speaking, his food thereby becomes impure.

Verse 94 (padma.6.64.94)

pāpaṁ sa kevalaṁ bhuṁkte tasmānmaunaṁ samācaret upavāsasamaṁ bhojyaṁ jñeyaṁ maunena nārada

He eats only sin thereby; therefore silence should be observed. O Narada, food eaten in silence should be known as equal to a fast.

Verse 95 (padma.6.64.95)

paṁcaprāṇāhutīryastu maunabhojī narottamaḥ paṁca vai pātakānyasya naśyaṁti nātra saṁśayaḥ

That excellent man who, eating in silence, offers oblation to the five vital breaths [that is, eats according to the pranagnihotra rite], his five great sins are certainly destroyed - of this there is no doubt.

Verse 96 (padma.6.64.96)

na kuryātsaṁdhitaṁ vastraṁ pitṛkarmaṇi vāḍava aśucyaṁge sthitaṁ caiva vastraṁ tadaśucī bhavet

O brahmin, one should not wear a stitched garment in ancestral rites; a garment placed upon an impure part of the body also becomes impure.

Verse 97 (padma.6.64.97)

kaṭipṛṣṭhasthite vastre purīṣaṁ kurute tu yaḥ mūtraṁ vā maithunaṁ vāpi tadvastraṁ parivarjayet

Whoever, in a garment worn at the waist or on the back, relieves himself of excrement or urine, or engages in sexual union, that garment should be discarded.

Verse 98 (padma.6.64.98)

pitṛkarmaviśeṣeṇa varjanīyaṁ ca vāḍava sarvadā ca mune prājñairdevārcā cakrapāṇinaḥ

In ancestral rites this should especially be avoided, O brahmin. O sage, the worship of the discus-bearing god should ever be performed by the wise,

Verse 99 (padma.6.64.99)

karttavyā ca viśeṣeṇa śucibhirvijiteṁdriyaiḥ saṁprasupte hṛṣīkeśe tṛṇaśākakusuṁbhikāḥ

especially by those who are pure and self-controlled. When Hrishikesha lies asleep, stitched garments made of grass, leaves, or kusumbha cloth,

Verse 100 (padma.6.64.100)

saṁdhitāni ca vastrāṇi varjitāni prayatnataḥ cāturmāsye harau supte yastu etāni varjayet

should be diligently avoided. Whoever, during Chaturmasya, while Hari sleeps, renounces all of these,

Verse 101 (padma.6.64.101)

narakaṁ na tu saṁgacchetyāvadābhūtasaṁplavam madyaṁ māṁsaṁ na bhakṣeta śāśakaṁ saukaraṁ tathā

he does not attain hell until the very dissolution of the ages. Liquor and meat should not be consumed, nor the flesh of the hare or the boar,

Verse 102 (padma.6.64.102)

cāturmāsye viśeṣeṇa supte deve janārdane so'pi devatvamāpnoti ahiṁsānirato naraḥ

especially during Chaturmasya, while the god Janardana sleeps. That man too, absorbed in non-violence, attains divinity.

Verse 103 (padma.6.64.103)

mithyākrodhaṁ tathā raukṣyaṁ tathā parvasu maithunam varjitaṁ yena vipreṁdra so'śvamedhaphalaṁ labhet

False anger, harshness, and sexual union on sacred days - whoever has renounced all these, O foremost of brahmins, obtains the fruit of the Ashvamedha sacrifice.

Verse 104 (padma.6.64.104)

brahmacarye prajāvṛddhirāyurvṛddhistathaiva ca puṣpaṁ patraṁ phalaṁ śayyā abhyaṁgaṁ ca vilepanam

By celibacy, offspring increase, and likewise longevity increases too. Flowers, leaves, fruit, a bed, oil-massage, and cosmetic ointment,

Verse 105 (padma.6.64.105)

vṛthādugdhāni māṁsaṁ ca madyaṁ ca parivarjayet cāturmāsye harau supte niyataṁ yadvivarjitam

and unnecessary milk, meat, and liquor - all of these should be renounced. Whatever is renounced according to this discipline during Chaturmasya, while Hari sleeps,

Verse 106 (padma.6.64.106)

prathamaṁ tattu dātavyaṁ brāhmaṇāya na saṁśayaḥ taddhanaṁ cākṣayaṁ vidvanpradattaṁ yaddivajātaye

that should first of all be given to a brahmin, without any doubt. O wise one, that wealth given to a brahmin becomes imperishable,

Verse 107 (padma.6.64.107)

koṭikoṭiguṇaṁ vipra labhate nātra saṁśayaḥ yenakenāpi vipreṁdra niyamenārcito hariḥ

and is obtained multiplied a crore of crores - of this there is no doubt. O foremost of brahmins, whoever has worshipped Hari through whatever discipline,

Verse 108 (padma.6.64.108)

dadāti viṣṇubhavanaṁ nātra kāryā vicāraṇā cāturmāsye harau supte niyamaṁ yo na kārayet

he attains the abode of Vishnu - there is no need for further reflection here. Whoever, during Chaturmasya, while Hari sleeps, does not observe the discipline,

Verse 109 (padma.6.64.109)

so'pi narakamāpnoti tasya janma vṛthāgatam yatpumānkārayennityaṁ dvijoktaṁ vidhimuttamam

he too attains hell, and his birth should be reckoned to have gone in vain. Whatever man performs daily the excellent discipline told by the brahmins,

Verse 110 (padma.6.64.110)

tathoktānniyamāṁścaiva sa yāti paramaṁ padam trivargarahitaṁ dānaṁ dattaṁ bhavati niṣphalam

he attains the supreme state through those very declared disciplines. A gift given devoid of dharma, artha, and kama - all three - becomes fruitless.

Verse 111 (padma.6.64.111)

tasmātsarvaprayatnena devadevaṁ janārdanam toṣayenniyamairdānairyathāśaktyā narottamaḥ

Therefore the best of men should, with every effort, satisfy the God of gods, Janardana, through disciplines and gifts, according to his own means.

Verse 112 (padma.6.64.112)

akṛtasnānadānaṁ ca brāhmaṇānāṁ ca pūjanam vṛthāgataṁ tu tatsarvaṁ yāvadiṁdrāścaturdaśa

Without performing bathing and giving, and without worshipping the brahmins, all of that goes to waste, for the duration of fourteen Indras.

Verse 113 (padma.6.64.113)

nārada uvāca- kīdṛśaṁ brahmacaryaṁ ca vada viśveśvara prabho yena cīrṇena goviṁdaḥ parituṣṭo bhavennṛṇām

Narada said: O Lord of the universe, O Lord, tell me what kind of celibacy is such that, by observing it, Govinda becomes exceedingly pleased with men?

Verse 114 (padma.6.64.114)

mahādeva uvāca- svadāranirataścaiva brahmacārī smṛto budhaiḥ cāṁḍālādadhiko vidvanyaḥ svabhāryāṁ parityajet

Mahadeva said: Even one devoted solely to his own wife is deemed by the wise to be a celibate. O wise one, whoever forsakes his own wife is worse than an outcaste.

Verse 115 (padma.6.64.115)

ṛtāvabhigamaṁ kṛtvā brahmacaryaṁ vidhīyate parityajati yo bhāryāṁ bhaktāṁ doṣavivarjitām

Even going to one's wife during her fertile period is itself ordained as celibacy. Whoever forsakes a devoted, faultless wife,

Verse 116 (padma.6.64.116)

pāpakarmā naro loke bhrūṇahatyāmavāpnuyāt aśvamedhasahasrāṇi vājapeyaśatāni ca

that sinful man, in this world, incurs the sin of killing an unborn child. Even a thousand Ashvamedhas and a hundred Vajapeya sacrifices,

Verse 117 (padma.6.64.117)

ekādaśyupavāsasya kalāṁ nārhaṁti ṣoḍaśīm snānaṁ dānaṁ japo homaḥ svādhyāyaṁ devatārcanam

are not worth even a sixteenth part of the fast of Ekadashi. Bathing, giving, chanting, the fire-offering, sacred study, and the worship of the deity -

Verse 118 (padma.6.64.118)

cāturmāsyakṛtaṁ yacca sarvaṁ hi cākṣayaṁ bhavet ekakālaṁ dvikālaṁ vā purāṇaṁ śṛṇute tu yaḥ

whatever is done during Chaturmasya, all of it becomes imperishable. Whoever listens to the Purana once or twice each day,

Verse 119 (padma.6.64.119)
