Verse 1 (padma.6.65.1)

नारद उवाच- चातुर्मास्यव्रतानां च प्रब्रूह्युद्यापनं विभो । उद्यापने कृते सर्वं संपूर्णं भवति ध्रुवम्

nārada uvāca- cāturmāsyavratānāṁ ca prabrūhyudyāpanaṁ vibho udyāpane kṛte sarvaṁ saṁpūrṇaṁ bhavati dhruvam

Narada said: O lord, tell me also the udyapana [concluding rite] of the Chaturmasya vows. Only when the udyapana is performed does everything become truly complete.

Verse 2 (padma.6.65.2)

महादेव उवाच- व्रतं कृत्वा महाभाग यदि नोद्यापनं चरेत् । यस्तु कर्त्ता कर्मणां स न सम्यक्फलभाक्भवेत्

mahādeva uvāca- vrataṁ kṛtvā mahābhāga yadi nodyāpanaṁ caret yastu karttā karmaṇāṁ sa na samyakphalabhākbhavet

Mahadeva said: O fortunate one, if a man performs the vow but does not perform the udyapana, the doer of that deed does not receive its complete fruit.

Verse 3 (padma.6.65.3)

व्रतवैकल्यमासाद्य कुष्ठी चांधः प्रजायते । एतस्मात्कारणाच्चैव कुर्यादुद्यापनं द्विज

vratavaikalyamāsādya kuṣṭhī cāṁdhaḥ prajāyate etasmātkāraṇāccaiva kuryādudyāpanaṁ dvija

By a deficiency in the vow, a man is born a leper and blind. For this very reason, O brahmin, the udyapana must surely be performed.

Verse 4 (padma.6.65.4)

गृहीत्वा नियमानेतान्पालयित्वा यथाविधि । सुप्तोत्थिते जगन्नाथे गत्वा ब्राह्मणसंनिधौ

gṛhītvā niyamānetānpālayitvā yathāvidhi suptotthite jagannāthe gatvā brāhmaṇasaṁnidhau

Having taken up these disciplines, having observed them according to the rite, when Jagannatha, having slept, has awakened, one should go into the presence of brahmins,

Verse 5 (padma.6.65.5)

क्षमापयेद्देवदेवं यथाविधि च विस्तरात् । तैलत्यागे घृतं दद्याद्घृतत्यागे पयः स्मृतम्

kṣamāpayeddevadevaṁ yathāvidhi ca vistarāt tailatyāge ghṛtaṁ dadyādghṛtatyāge payaḥ smṛtam

and ask forgiveness of the God of gods, duly and at length. For the renunciation of oil, ghee should be given; for the renunciation of ghee, milk is prescribed.

Verse 6 (padma.6.65.6)

मौने पिंडास्तिला देयाः सहिरण्या द्विजातये । भोजने भोजनं दद्याद्दध्योदनसमन्वितम्

maune piṁḍāstilā deyāḥ sahiraṇyā dvijātaye bhojane bhojanaṁ dadyāddadhyodanasamanvitam

For silence, balls of sesame together with gold should be given to a brahmin. For the [discipline of] eating, food together with curd-rice should be given.

Verse 7 (padma.6.65.7)

अन्नं दद्याद्विशेषेण हिरण्येन समन्वितम् । अन्नदानान्मुनिश्रेष्ठ विष्णुलोके महीयते

annaṁ dadyādviśeṣeṇa hiraṇyena samanvitam annadānānmuniśreṣṭha viṣṇuloke mahīyate

Food together with gold should especially be given. O foremost of sages, by the gift of food a man is honored in the realm of Vishnu.

Verse 8 (padma.6.65.8)

पालाशपात्रे यो भुंक्ते नरो मासचतुष्टयम् । भाजनं घृतपूर्णं तु दद्यादुद्यापने द्विज

pālāśapātre yo bhuṁkte naro māsacatuṣṭayam bhājanaṁ ghṛtapūrṇaṁ tu dadyādudyāpane dvija

A man who eats from a palasha-leaf vessel for four months, O brahmin, should give a vessel filled with ghee at the udyapana.

Verse 9 (padma.6.65.9)

षड्रसं भोजनं दद्याद्ब्राह्मणे नक्तभोजने । अयाचिते ह्यनड्वाहं सहिरण्यं प्रदापयेत्

ṣaḍrasaṁ bhojanaṁ dadyādbrāhmaṇe naktabhojane ayācite hyanaḍvāhaṁ sahiraṇyaṁ pradāpayet

One who has eaten once at night should give a brahmin a meal endowed with all six flavors. For the discipline of giving a bullock unasked, a bullock together with gold should be given.

Verse 10 (padma.6.65.10)

माषं त्यजन्मुनिश्रेष्ठ गां च दद्यात्सवत्सकाम् । धात्रीस्नाने नरो दद्यात्स्वर्णं माषिकमेवच

māṣaṁ tyajanmuniśreṣṭha gāṁ ca dadyātsavatsakām dhātrīsnāne naro dadyātsvarṇaṁ māṣikamevaca

O foremost of sages, one who has renounced black gram should give a cow together with her calf. One who has bathed with amla should give one masha of gold.

Verse 11 (padma.6.65.11)

फलानां नियमे चैव फलानि च प्रदापयेत् । धान्यानां नियमे धान्यमथवा शालयः स्मृताः

phalānāṁ niyame caiva phalāni ca pradāpayet dhānyānāṁ niyame dhānyamathavā śālayaḥ smṛtāḥ

In the discipline of fruits, fruits themselves should be given; in the discipline of grains, grain or rice is declared appropriate.

Verse 12 (padma.6.65.12)

तद्वद्भूशयने शय्यां सतूलां गेंदुकान्विताम् । ब्रह्मचर्यं कृतं येन चातुर्मास्ये द्विजोत्तम

tadvadbhūśayane śayyāṁ satūlāṁ geṁdukānvitām brahmacaryaṁ kṛtaṁ yena cāturmāsye dvijottama

Likewise, one who has slept upon the ground should give a bed furnished with cotton and a pillow. O best of the twice-born, whoever has observed celibacy during Chaturmasya,

Verse 13 (padma.6.65.13)

दंपत्योर्भोजनं देयमुभयोर्भक्तिपूर्वकम् । सभोगं दक्षिणोपेतं सशाकं लवणं तथा

daṁpatyorbhojanaṁ deyamubhayorbhaktipūrvakam sabhogaṁ dakṣiṇopetaṁ saśākaṁ lavaṇaṁ tathā

should give food with devotion to both husband and wife together, along with gifts, with greens and salt, a full meal.

Verse 14 (padma.6.65.14)

नित्यस्नाने नरो दद्यान्निस्नेहे सर्पिः सक्तवः । नखकेशव्रते चैव प्रादेशं परिकल्पयेत्

nityasnāne naro dadyānnisnehe sarpiḥ saktavaḥ nakhakeśavrate caiva prādeśaṁ parikalpayet

One who has bathed daily [should give accordingly]; one who has abstained from oil should give ghee and roasted flour. For the vow of letting the nails and hair grow, a gift measuring a hand-span should be given.

Verse 15 (padma.6.65.15)

उपानहौ प्रदातव्यौ उपानहविवर्जनात् । आमिषस्य परित्यागात्सवत्सा कपिला स्मृता

upānahau pradātavyau upānahavivarjanāt āmiṣasya parityāgātsavatsā kapilā smṛtā

For the renunciation of sandals, sandals should be given as a gift. For the renunciation of meat, it is declared that a Kapila cow together with her calf should be given.

Verse 16 (padma.6.65.16)

नित्यं दीपप्रदो यस्तु सौवर्णं दीपमावहेत् । तं दीपं घृतसंयुक्तं दद्याच्चैव द्विजन्मने

nityaṁ dīpaprado yastu sauvarṇaṁ dīpamāvahet taṁ dīpaṁ ghṛtasaṁyuktaṁ dadyāccaiva dvijanmane

Whoever kindles a lamp daily should have a golden lamp made; that lamp, together with ghee, should be given to a brahmin,

Verse 17 (padma.6.65.17)

विष्णुभक्ताय विप्राय परिपूर्णव्रतेप्सया । शाकस्य नियमे शाकं माषे सौवर्णमाषकम्

viṣṇubhaktāya viprāya paripūrṇavratepsayā śākasya niyame śākaṁ māṣe sauvarṇamāṣakam

that Vishnu-devoted brahmin, out of the desire for the vow's completion. In the discipline of greens, greens should be given; in the discipline of masha, a golden masha should be given.

Verse 18 (padma.6.65.18)

मैथुनानां तु नियमे रौप्यं दद्याद्दिवजातये । नागवल्ल्यास्तु नियमे कर्पूरं सहरिण्यकम्

maithunānāṁ tu niyame raupyaṁ dadyāddivajātaye nāgavallyāstu niyame karpūraṁ sahariṇyakam

For the discipline of [renouncing] sexual union, silver should be given to a brahmin. For the discipline of renouncing betel-leaf, camphor, together with gold, should be given.

Verse 19 (padma.6.65.19)

कालेकाले द्विजश्रेष्ठ यत्कृतं नियमेन तु । तत्तद्देयं विशेषेण परलोकगतीप्सया

kālekāle dvijaśreṣṭha yatkṛtaṁ niyamena tu tattaddeyaṁ viśeṣeṇa paralokagatīpsayā

O best of brahmins, whatever has been done according to discipline at each time, that very thing should be specially given as a gift by those who desire a good state in the world beyond.

Verse 20 (padma.6.65.20)

आदौ स्नानादिकं कृत्वा विष्णोरग्रे प्रकाशयेत् । अनादिनिधनो देवः शंखचक्रगदाधरः । तस्याग्रे के न कुर्वंति यतो विष्णुस्तु पापहा

ādau snānādikaṁ kṛtvā viṣṇoragre prakāśayet anādinidhano devaḥ śaṁkhacakragadādharaḥ tasyāgre ke na kurvaṁti yato viṣṇustu pāpahā

First, having bathed and so forth, the udyapana should be made known before Vishnu. That god is without beginning or end, bearer of the conch, discus, and mace - who would not do this before him, since Vishnu alone destroys sin?
