nārada uvāca- yamasyārādhanaṁ brūhi maddhitārthaṁ surottama kathaṁ na gamyate deva nareṇa narakāṁtare

Narada said: O best of gods, tell me, for my own welfare, the worship of Yama. O god, how does a man not go into hell - how may this be?

Verse 2 (padma.6.66.2)

śrūyate yamaloke tu sadā vaitaraṇī nadī anādhṛṣyātvapārā ca dustarā bahuśoṇitā

In Yama's realm, it is heard, there ever flows a river named Vaitarani, unassailable, boundless, hard to cross, and filled with much blood.

Verse 3 (padma.6.66.3)

dustarā sarvabhūtānāṁ sā kathaṁ sutarā bhavet bhayametanmahādeva yamalokaṁ prati prabho

How might that river, which is hard to cross for all beings, become easy to cross? O Mahadeva, O Lord, this very fear concerns the realm of Yama.

Verse 4 (padma.6.66.4)

tasya nirmocanārthāya brūhi kṛtyamaśeṣataḥ bhagavandevadeveśa kṛpāṁ kṛtvā mamopari

Tell me fully the means of being freed from it. O Lord, O God of gods, showing me your grace.

Verse 5 (padma.6.66.5)

jvalaṁtamivacādityaṁ tapasā dyotatāṁgakam māṁ praṇamya muniḥ prāha mudgalo vismayānvitaḥ

his body radiant with austerity, as though a blazing sun. That sage Mudgala, having bowed to me, spoke, filled with astonishment -

Verse 7 (padma.6.66.7)

mudgala uvāca- akasmānmūrcchito deva patito'smi dharātale prajvalaṁti mamāṁgāni gṛhīto yamakiṁkaraiḥ

I, in the form of a person the size of a thumb, was dragged forcibly along; bound firmly by Yama's warriors, I was led into the presence of that dread lord.

Verse 9 (padma.6.66.9)

kṣaṇātsabhāyāṁ paśyāmi yamaṁ piṁgalalocanam kṛṣṇamukhaṁ mahāraudraṁ mṛtyuvyādhiśatānvitam

vimūrcchikā galagrāha hṛdrogairbhūtataskaraiḥ itthaṁ bahuvidhai raudrairnānārūpairbhayaṁkaraiḥ

by fainting-spells, the throat-gripping ailment, heart-disease, and thieving spirits too - thus [he was surrounded] by many terrible, various, fear-inspiring [afflictions],

Verse 18 (padma.6.66.18)

bhīmāṭavikajīvaiśca yathā vyālāṁjano giriḥ tato viśveśvaraḥ prāha samayaḥ kiṁkarānprati

like some dark, collyrium-hued mountain teeming with fearsome forest creatures. Then that lord of the universe [Yama] said to his servants -

'By what mistake have you brought this sage here? This son of Bhimaka, dwelling in the village of Kaundinya, named Mudgala,

Verse 20 (padma.6.66.20)

kṣīṇāyuḥ kṣatriyaḥ so'sti āneyo mucyatāmasau śrutvaitatte gatāstasmādāyātāḥ punareva te

no - it was rather some kshatriya of exhausted lifespan who was to be brought - release him.' Hearing this, they departed from there, and returned once more.

Verse 21 (padma.6.66.21)

All those messengers of Yama spoke again to the King of Dharma: 'Having gone there, we saw no being of exhausted lifespan.'

Verse 22 (padma.6.66.22)

yama uvāca- kiṁ kāraṇamadṛśyāste prāyeṇa bhavatāṁ narāḥ sukṛtā dvādaśīyaistu khyātā vaitaraṇī nadī

Yama said: What is the reason that men of your [domain] mostly remain unseen [to us]? [The messengers said:] It is well known that because of people endowed with the vow of Dvadashi, the river Vaitarani -

Verse 23 (padma.6.66.23)

ujjayinyāṁ prayāge vā yamunāyāṁ ca ye mṛtāḥ tilahastihiraṇyādi dattaṁ yaistu gavāhnikam

those who die at Ujjaini, at Prayaga, or in the Yamuna, and those who have given gifts of sesame, elephants, gold, and the like, and the gift of a cow,

Verse 25 (padma.6.66.25)

ihābhyehi mahābhāge gṛhāṇārghaṁ mayā kṛtam yamadvārapathe ghore khyātā vaitaraṇī nadī

'O fortunate one, come here, accept this arghya offered by me. On the terrible path to Yama's door, the river known as Vaitarani is renowned,

Verse 59 (padma.6.66.59)

tasyāmuddharaṇārthāya janmamṛtyujarātigā yā dustarā duṣkṛtibhiḥ sarvaprāṇibhayāpahā

for the sake of deliverance from it, which lies beyond birth, death and old age, which is hard to cross for evildoers and which removes the fear of all beings,

Verse 60 (padma.6.66.60)

yasyāṁ bhayātpramajjaṁti prāṇino yātanāparāḥ tartukāmastu tāṁ ghoraṁ jayā devi namonamaḥ

in fear of which suffering beings are ever drowning - desiring to cross it, O terrible goddess Jaya, I offer salutations to you again and again.

Verse 61 (padma.6.66.61)

tasyāṁ devādhitiṣṭhaṁti yā sā vaitaraṇī nadī sā cāpi pūjitā bhaktyā prītyarthaṁ keśavasya ca

That river Vaitarani, upon which the gods dwell, is also worshipped with devotion for the pleasure of Keshava.

Verse 62 (padma.6.66.62)

yasyāstaṭe praviśaṁti ṛṣayaḥ pitarastathā sā cāpi siṁdhurūpeṇa pūjitā pāpahārikā

On whose banks the sages and the ancestors enter - that too, worshipped in the form of the ocean, removes sin.

Verse 63 (padma.6.66.63)

tarītuṁ tāṁ pradāsyāmi sarvapāpavimuktaye puṇyārthaṁ saṁpravakṣyāmi tubhyaṁ vaitaraṇī nadīm

For crossing it I offer this, for freedom from every sin. Desiring merit, O river Vaitarani, I declare to you [my intent] -

Verse 64 (padma.6.66.64)

mayāsi pūjitā bhaktyā prītyarthaṁ keśavasya ca kṛṣṇakṛṣṇajagannātha saṁsārāduddharasva mām

'I have worshipped you with devotion, for the pleasure of Keshava. O Krishna, Krishna, O Jagannatha, deliver me from this worldly existence.

Verse 65 (padma.6.66.65)

nāmagrahaṇamātreṇa sarvaṁ pāpaṁ harasva me yajñopavītaṁ paramaṁ kāritaṁ navataṁtubhiḥ

By the mere utterance of your name, take away all my sins.' A sacred thread of the highest quality, made of nine strands,

Verse 66 (padma.6.66.66)

pratigṛhṇīṣva deveśa prīto yaccha mamepsitam idaṁ tava ca tāṁbūlaṁ yathāśaktyā suśobhanam

'O Lord of gods, accept this, and being pleased, grant me my desired wish.' This is your betel, O Lord, made beautiful according to my means,

Verse 67 (padma.6.66.67)

pratigṛhṇīṣva deveśa māmuddhara bhavārṇavāt paṁcavartī pradīpo'yaṁ deveśārārtikaṁ tava

'O Lord of gods, accept it, deliver me from the ocean of worldly existence.' This is a lamp with five wicks, O Lord of gods, for your arati,

Verse 68 (padma.6.66.68)

mohāṁdhakāradyumaṇe bhaktiyukto bhavārtihṛt paramānnaṁ supakvānnaṁ samastarasasaṁyutam

'O sun to the darkness of delusion, being filled with devotion, be the remover of worldly suffering.' Excellent food, well-cooked, endowed with every flavor,

Verse 69 (padma.6.66.69)

niveditaṁ mayā bhaktyā bhagavanpratigṛhyatām dvādaśākṣaramaṁtreṇa yathāsaṁkhya japena ca

'this has been offered by me with devotion, O Lord, accept it.' Having chanted the twelve-syllabled mantra as many times as prescribed,

Verse 70 (padma.6.66.70)

prīyatāṁ me śriyaḥkāṁtaḥ prīto yacchatu vāṁchitam paṁca gāvaḥ samutpannā mathyamāne mahodadhau

'may the beloved of Lakshmi be pleased with me, and being pleased, grant my desired wish.' The five cows that arose when the great ocean was churned,

Verse 71 (padma.6.66.71)

tāsāṁ madhye tu yā naṁdā tasyai dhenvai namonamaḥ gāṁ saṁpūjya vidhānena arghyaṁ dadyātsamāhitaḥ

among them the one named Nanda - salutations to that cow, again and again. Having worshipped the cow according to the rite, arghya should be offered with self-restraint -

Verse 72 (padma.6.66.72)

sarvakāmadughe devi sarvāṁtakanivāriṇī ārogyaṁ saṁtatiṁ dīrghāṁ dehi naṁdini me sadā

'O goddess, you fulfil every desire, you ward off all death. O Nandini, grant me ever good health and long-lasting offspring.

Verse 73 (padma.6.66.73)

pūjitā ca vasiṣṭhena viśvāmitreṇa dhīmatā kapile hara me pāpaṁ yanmayā pūrvasaṁcitam

You are worshipped by Vasishtha and the wise Vishvamitra. O Kapila, take away that sin of mine which I have accumulated before.

Verse 74 (padma.6.66.74)

gāvo mamāgrataḥ saṁtu gāvo me saṁtu pṛṣṭhataḥ nāke māmupatiṣṭhaṁtu hemaśṛṁgī payomucaḥ

May cows be before me, may cows be behind me; may the golden-horned, rain-bestowing cows stand present before me in heaven,

Verse 75 (padma.6.66.75)

surabhyaḥ saurabheyāśca saritaḥ sāgarā yathā sarvadevamaye devi subhadre bhaktavatsale

the surabhi and saurabheya cows, [as boundless] as the rivers and oceans. O goddess who is the very form of all gods, O most auspicious one, O lover of your devotees!'

Verse 76 (padma.6.66.76)

evaṁ saṁpūjya vidhivaddadyādgoṣu gavāhnikam saurabheyaḥ sarvahitāḥ pavitrāḥ pāpanāśanāḥ

Having thus worshipped according to the rite, fodder should be given to the cows. The saurabheya cows benefit all, are pure, and destroy sin.

Verse 77 (padma.6.66.77)

pratigṛhṇaṁtu me grāsaṁ gāvastrailokyamātaraḥ gaṁgadāyai namo bhūtyai sarvapāpaprahāṇaye

'O cows, mothers of the three worlds, accept this morsel of mine. O giver of the Ganga, O goddess of prosperity, salutations to you for the destruction of all sin.'

Verse 78 (padma.6.66.78)

anenaiva tu maṁtreṇa gadāṁ vaidhārayedbudhaḥ paṁ namaḥ padmanābhāya padmaṁ vai dhārayetsudhīḥ

With this very mantra the wise should bear the mace - reciting 'paṁ namaḥ padmanābhāya', the wise should bear the lotus,

Verse 79 (padma.6.66.79)

caṁ cakrarūpiṇe viṣṇo dhāraṇaṁ cakrajaṁ smṛtam śaṁ śaṁkharūpiṇe tubhyaṁ namo'stu sukhakāriṇe

reciting 'caṁ' for Vishnu of discus-form, the bearing born of the discus is declared; reciting 'śaṁ', salutations to you, of conch-form, bestower of happiness -

Verse 80 (padma.6.66.80)

maṁtreṇānena vai dūtā dhāraṇaṁ śaṁkhajaṁ smṛtam caturṇāmāyudhānāṁ tu dhāraṇaṁ munibhiḥ smṛtam

by this very mantra, O messengers, the bearing born of the conch is declared. The bearing of these four weapons has been declared by the sages.

Verse 81 (padma.6.66.81)

agnihotraṁ yathā nityaṁ vedasyādhyayanaṁ tathā brāhmaṇasya tathaivedaṁ taptamudrādi dhāraṇam

As the daily fire-offering, so too Vedic study; for a brahmin, likewise, the bearing of heated seals and the like is declared.

Verse 82 (padma.6.66.82)

caṁdanena sugaṁdhena gopikācaṁdanena tu dhāraṇaṁ ca viśeṣeṇa brāhmaṇairvedapāragaiḥ

With fragrant sandal-paste, and with gopi-chandana too, brahmins learned in the Veda should especially wear [the tilaka and the like].

Verse 83 (padma.6.66.83)

cāṁḍālo'pi bhavecchuddho dhāraṇācca na saṁśayaḥ ūrdhvaṁ puṁḍramṛjuṁ saumyaṁ sacihnaṁ dhārayedyadi

By wearing this, even an outcaste becomes pure - of this there is no doubt. If someone wears a straight, gentle, mark-bearing urdhva-pundra [vertical tilaka],

Verse 84 (padma.6.66.84)

sa cāṁḍālo'pi śuddhātmā pūjya eva sadā dvijaiḥ cāṁḍālānāṁ gṛhe dūtāstulasī yatra dṛśyate

then that outcaste too, becoming pure of soul, is worthy of worship even by brahmins, always. O messengers, even in the home of outcastes, wherever tulasi is seen,

Verse 85 (padma.6.66.85)

tatratyā tulasī grāhyā bhaktibhāvena cetasā

the tulasi found there is worthy of being received into the mind with a heart full of devotion.
