Uttara Khanda · Chapter 71
Vishnu Sahasranama (The Thousand Names of Vishnu)
Verse 1 (padma.6.71.1)
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ - sūta jīva ciraṁ sādho tvayātikaruṇātmanā saṁvādo hyadbhutaḥ prokto yaścāsīnnāradeśayoḥ
The sages said: O Suta, O virtuous one, may you live long, for your nature is one of the greatest compassion. You have told us of that wondrous dialogue which took place between Narada and Ishvara [Shiva].
Verse 2 (padma.6.71.2)
bhagavannāmamahimā nāradena mahātmanā kīdṛkśrutaḥ samākhyāhi śraddhayā śṛṇvatāṁ guro
What was that glory of the Lord's name which the great-souled Narada heard? O teacher, tell it to all of us, who listen with faith.
Verse 3 (padma.6.71.3)
sūta uvāca- śṛṇudhvaṁ munayaḥ sarve purāvṛttaṁ vadāmyaham yasmiñchrute dvijaśreṣṭhāḥ kṛṣṇe bhaktirvivarddhate
Suta said: Listen, all you sages, I shall tell that ancient tale, hearing which, O foremost of brahmins, devotion to Krishna increases.
Verse 4 (padma.6.71.4)
ekadā nārado draṣṭuṁ pitaraṁ susamāhitaḥ jagāma meruśikharaṁ siddhacāraṇasevitam
Once Narada, wishing to see his father, went, with a composed mind, to the peak of Mount Meru, attended by siddhas and charanas.
Verse 5 (padma.6.71.5)
tatra devaṁ samāsīnaṁ brahmāṇaṁ jagatāṁ patim namaskṛtyābravīdviprā nārado munisattamaḥ
There, having bowed to the god Brahma, lord of the worlds, seated there, O brahmins, that foremost of sages, Narada, said -
Verse 6 (padma.6.71.6)
nārada uvāca- nāmno'sya yāvatīśaktirvada viśveśvara prabho kīdṛktu nāmamahimā avyayasya mahātmanaḥ
Narada said: O Lord of the universe, O Lord, tell me how great is the power of this imperishable great one's name. What is the glory of the name of this undying, great-souled one?
Verse 7 (padma.6.71.7)
yo'yaṁ viśveśvaraḥ sākṣādayaṁ nārāyaṇo hariḥ paramātmā hṛṣīkeśaḥ sarvajīveṣu saṁgataḥ
He who is directly the Lord of the universe, this very one is Narayana Hari, the Supreme Self, Hrishikesha, who pervades all living beings,
Verse 8 (padma.6.71.8)
māyāvimohitāḥ sarve bhagavaṁtamadhokṣajam naiva jānaṁtyasāre'sminnarā mūḍhāḥ kalau yuge
that Lord Adhokshaja - deluded by maya, all these people fail to know him; in this worthless Kali age, men have become foolish.
Verse 9 (padma.6.71.9)
brahmovāca- asminkalau viśeṣeṇa nāmoccāraṇapūrvakam bhaktiḥ kāryā yathā vatsa tathā tvaṁ śrotumarhasi
Brahma said: In this Kali age, devotion must be practiced especially through the utterance of the [divine] name. O child, hear it, exactly as it is, for you are worthy to hear it.
Verse 10 (padma.6.71.10)
dṛṣṭaṁ pareṣāṁ pāpānāmanuktānāṁ viśodhanam viṣṇorjiṣṇoḥ prayatnena smaraṇaṁ pāpanāśanam
The purification of other sins, even those not [expressly] mentioned, has been observed; the diligent remembrance of Vishnu, the ever-victorious, is what destroys sin.
Verse 11 (padma.6.71.11)
mithyā jñātvā tataḥ sarvaṁ harernāmapaṭhanjapan sarvapāpavinirmukto yāti viṣṇoḥ paraṁpadam
Knowing this, reading and chanting the name of Hari, a man becomes freed from every sin and attains the supreme state of Vishnu.
Verse 12 (padma.6.71.12)
ye vadaṁti narā nityaṁ harirityakṣaradvayam tasyoccāraṇamātreṇa vimuktāste na saṁśayaḥ
Those men who ever utter the two syllables 'Hari' become liberated by that mere utterance - of this there is no doubt.
Verse 13 (padma.6.71.13)
prāyaścittāni sarvāṇi kṛṣṇānusmaraṇaṁ param prātarniśi tathā sāyaṁ madhyāhnādiṣu saṁsmaran
Among all penances, the remembrance of Krishna alone is supreme; remembering him at dawn, at night, in the evening, and at midday and other times,
Verse 14 (padma.6.71.14)
nārāyaṇamavāpnoti sadyaḥ pāpakṣayaṁ naraḥ viṣṇusaṁsmaratā deva samastakleśasaṁkṣaye
a man instantly attains Narayana and the destruction of his sins. O god, for one who remembers Vishnu, when all afflictions are destroyed,
Verse 15 (padma.6.71.15)
muktiṁ prayāti svargāptistasya viṣṇostu kīrttanāt vāsudeve mano yasya japahomārcanādiṣu
liberation is obtained, and by the very praise of that Vishnu, heaven is attained too. Whoever's mind is fixed on Vasudeva, whether in chanting, fire-offering, or worship,
Verse 16 (padma.6.71.16)
tadakṣayaṁ vijānīyādyāvadiṁdrāścaturdaśa kva nākapṛṣṭhagamanaṁ punarāvṛttilakṣaṇam
that should be known as imperishable for the duration of fourteen Indras. What then to say of the mere attainment of heaven, which bears the mark of return [to rebirth]?
Verse 17 (padma.6.71.17)
kva japo vāsudevasya muktibījamanuttamam tanmukhaṁ paramaṁ tīrthaṁ yatrāvarttaṁ vitanvatī
Where does the chanting of Vasudeva not reach? It is the most excellent seed of liberation; even the eastern river Sarasvati shines, forming its eddies there,
Verse 18 (padma.6.71.18)
namo nārāyaṇāyeti bhāti prācī sarasvatī tasmādaharniśaṁ viṣṇusmaraṇātpuruṣottamaḥ
[joined with the mantra] 'namo narayanaya'. Therefore, by remembering Vishnu day and night, a man becomes Purushottama himself,
Verse 19 (padma.6.71.19)
na yāti narakaṁ putra saṁkṣīṇakalikalmaṣaḥ satyaṁ satyaṁ punaḥ satyaṁ bhāṣitaṁ mama suvrata
O son, his sin born of the Kali age is destroyed, and he does not go to hell. O one of good vows, I have spoken this as truth, truth, and truth again.
Verse 20 (padma.6.71.20)
nāmoccāraṇamātreṇa mahāpāpātpramucyate rāmarāmeti rāmeti rāmeti ca punarjapan
By merely uttering the name, a man is freed from the gravest sin. Saying 'Rama, Rama', saying 'Rama', chanting 'Rama' again and again,
Verse 21 (padma.6.71.21)
sa cāṁḍālo'pi pūtātmā jāyate nātra saṁśayaḥ kurukṣetraṁ tathā kāśī gayā vai dvārikā tathā
even an outcaste becomes pure of soul - of this there is no doubt. Kurukshetra, Kashi, Gaya, and Dvaraka too,
Verse 22 (padma.6.71.22)
sarvaṁ tīrthaṁ kṛtaṁ tena nāmoccāraṇamātrataḥ kṛṣṇakṛṣṇeti kṛṣṇeti iti vāyo japanpaṭhan
all sacred crossings are reckoned as visited by him, by the mere utterance of the name. Saying 'Krishna, Krishna', saying 'Krishna', thus chanting and reciting into the air,
Verse 23 (padma.6.71.23)
ihalokaṁ parityajya modate viṣṇusaṁnidhau nṛsiṁheti mudā vipra satataṁ prajapanpaṭhan
he departs from this world and rejoices in Vishnu's presence. Chanting 'Nrisimha' with joy, O brahmin, ceaselessly, reciting it,
Verse 24 (padma.6.71.24)
mahāpāpātpramucyeta kalau bhāgavato naraḥ dhyāyankṛte yajanyajñaistretāyāṁ dvāpare'rcayan
in the Kali age a Bhagavata man becomes freed from the gravest sin. Whatever is attained by meditation in the Krita age, by sacrifice in the Treta age, by worship in the Dvapara age,
Verse 25 (padma.6.71.25)
yadāpnoti tadāpnoti kalau saṁkīrtya keśavam etajjñātvā nimagnāśca jagadātmani keśave
that same fruit is obtained in the Kali age merely by the chanting of Keshava's name. Knowing this, those who become absorbed in Keshava, the Self of the world,
Verse 26 (padma.6.71.26)
sarvapāpaparikṣīṇā yāṁti viṣṇoḥ paraṁ padam matsyaḥ kūrmo varāhaśca nṛsiṁho vāmanastathā
freed of all sin, go to the supreme state of Vishnu. Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Nrisimha and Vamana,
Verse 27 (padma.6.71.27)
rāmo rāmaśca kṛṣṇaśca buddhaḥ kalkī tataḥ smṛtaḥ ete daśāvatārāśca pṛthivyāṁ parikīrtitāḥ
Rama, Parashurama, Krishna, Buddha, and thereafter Kalki - these ten avataras are renowned upon the earth.
Verse 28 (padma.6.71.28)
eteṣāṁ nāmamātreṇa brahmahā śudhyate sadā prātaḥ paṭhanjapandhyāyanviṣṇornāma yathā tathā
By the mere name of these, even a killer of a brahmin ever becomes purified. At dawn, reading, chanting, and meditating upon Vishnu's name in whatever form,
Verse 29 (padma.6.71.29)
mucyate nātra saṁdehaḥ sa vai nārāyaṇo bhavet sūta uvāca- śrutvā vai nārado hyetadvismayaṁ paramaṁ gataḥ
a man is liberated - of this there is no doubt; he certainly becomes as Narayana himself. Suta said: Hearing this, Narada was filled with the greatest wonder,
Verse 30 (padma.6.71.30)
uvāca pitaraṁ tatra kimuktaṁ devasattama devāḥ sahasraśaḥ saṁti rudrāḥ saṁti sahasraśaḥ
and there said to his father: O best of gods, what has been said? There are gods by the thousands, there are Rudras by the thousands,
Verse 31 (padma.6.71.31)
pitaraḥ saṁti śataśaḥ yakṣāśca kinnarāstathā bhūtāḥ pretāḥ piśācāśca ye keciddevayonayaḥ
there are ancestors by the hundreds, and yakshas and kinnaras too, and bhutas, pretas and pishachas as well, whoever belongs to the divine species -
Verse 32 (padma.6.71.32)
teṣāṁ nāmnā ca māhātmyaṁ śrutaṁ dṛṣṭaṁ tathā na ca śrīviṣṇornāmamāhātmyaṁ yādṛśaṁ ca śrutaṁ mayā
the glory of none of these has been heard or seen through their name, as I have heard the glory of the name of Sri Vishnu,
Verse 33 (padma.6.71.33)
yasya vai nāmamātreṇa mucyate nātra saṁśayaḥ kiṁ vai tīrthakṛte deva pṛthivyāmaṭane kṛte
by whose mere name alone a man is liberated - of this there is no doubt. O god, then what use is there in making pilgrimages, in wandering about the earth,
Verse 34 (padma.6.71.34)
yasya vai nāmamahimā śrutvā mokṣamavāpnuyāt tanmukhaṁ tu mahattīrthaṁ tanmukhaṁ kṣetrameva ca
when the mere hearing of whose name-glory grants liberation? His very mouth is the great sacred crossing, his very mouth is the sacred field,
Verse 35 (padma.6.71.35)
yanmukhe rāmarāmeti tanmukhaṁ sarvakāmikam kāni vai tasya nāmāni kati vīryāṇi suvrata
in whose mouth is 'Rama, Rama' - that very mouth fulfils every desire. O one of good vows, how many are his names, how many his mighty deeds -
Verse 36 (padma.6.71.36)
tatsarvaṁ ca viśeṣeṇa mama brūhi pitāmaha brahmovāca- vyāpako'yaṁ sadā viṣṇuḥ paramātmā sanātanaḥ
tell me all of that in particular, O grandsire. Brahma said: This Vishnu is ever all-pervading, the eternal Supreme Self,
Verse 37 (padma.6.71.37)
anādinidhanaḥ śrīmānbhūtātmā bhūtabhāvanaḥ yasmādahaṁ hi saṁjāto so'yaṁ viṣṇuḥ sadāvatu
without beginning or end, glorious, the very self of beings and the generator of beings; from whom I myself was born - may that same Vishnu ever protect.
Verse 38 (padma.6.71.38)
so'yaṁ kālasya kālo vai so'yaṁ mama tu pūrvajaḥ akṣayaḥ puṁḍarīkākṣo matimānavyayaḥ pumān
He is the very Time of Time itself; he is my own progenitor - imperishable, lotus-eyed, wise, and the undying Person.
Verse 39 (padma.6.71.39)
śeṣaśāyī sadā viṣṇuḥ sahasraśīrṣā mahatprabhuḥ sarvabhūtamayaḥ sākṣādviśvarūpo janārdanaḥ
Ever reclining upon Shesha, Vishnu, of a thousand heads, the great Lord; directly in the form of all beings, of universal form, Janardana.
Verse 40 (padma.6.71.40)
kaiṭabhārirayaṁ viṣṇurdhātā devo jagatpatiḥ tasyāhaṁ nāmagotraṁ ca na vedmi puruṣarṣabha
This very Vishnu is the enemy of Kaitabha, the Ordainer, the god, the lord of the worlds; his [further] names and lineage, O bull among men, I do not know.
Verse 41 (padma.6.71.41)
vedavādyapyahaṁ tāta nāhaṁ jñātā kadācana atastvaṁ gaccha devarṣe yatrāsti kila viśvarāṭ
O child, though renowned in the Vedas, I have never come to know this. Therefore, O divine sage, go to where that sovereign of the universe [Mahadeva] surely dwells.
Verse 42 (padma.6.71.42)
O foremost of sages, he knows the truth; he shall tell you everything. That glorious being is ever the lord of Kailasa,
Verse 43 (padma.6.71.43)
sarveṣāṁ viṣṇubhaktānāmayaṁ śreṣṭhaḥ parātparaḥ paṁcavaktro hyumākāṁtaḥ sarvaduḥkhanibarhaṇaḥ
the most excellent among all devotees of Vishnu, transcendent beyond the transcendent; five-faced, the beloved of Uma, the destroyer of all sorrows.
Verse 44 (padma.6.71.44)
viśveśvaro viśvanāthaḥ sarvadā bhaktavatsalaḥ tatra gaccha suraśreṣṭha tatsarvaṁ kathayiṣyati
He is Vishveshvara, Vishvanatha, ever holding tender affection for his devotees. Go there, O best of gods, and he shall tell you everything.
Verse 45 (padma.6.71.45)
piturvacanamākarṇya tatra gaṁtuṁ pracakrame vijñātuṁ nāmamāhātmyaṁ kailāsabhavanaṁ prati
Hearing his father's words, Narada set out toward the abode of Kailasa, in order to learn the glory of the [divine] name,
Verse 46 (padma.6.71.46)
yatra viśveśvaro devo nityaṁ tiṣṭhati bhūtidaḥ dadarśa nāradastatra devaṁ taṁ surapūjitam
where the god Vishveshvara, the bestower of prosperity, ever dwells. There Narada beheld that god, worshipped by all the gods,
Verse 47 (padma.6.71.47)
kailāsaśikharāsīnaṁ devadevaṁ jagadgurum paṁcavaktraṁ daśabhujaṁ trinetraṁ śūlapāṇinam
seated upon the peak of Kailasa, the God of gods, the teacher of the world, five-faced, ten-armed, three-eyed, trident in hand,
Verse 48 (padma.6.71.48)
kapālinaṁ sakhaṭvāṁgaṁ tīkṣṇaṁ śūlāsidhāriṇam pinākadhāriṇaṁ bhīmaṁ varadaṁ vṛṣavāhanam
bearing a skull, together with a khatvanga [skull-topped staff], holding a sharp trident and sword, bearing the Pinaka bow, terrible, the boon-giver, riding upon a bull,
Verse 49 (padma.6.71.49)
bhasmāṁgaṁ vyālaśobhāḍhyaṁ śaśāṁkakṛtaśekharam nīlajīmūtasaṁkāśaṁ sūryakoṭisamaprabham
his limbs smeared with ash, adorned with the splendor of serpents, bearing the moon as his crest, resembling a dark cloud, radiant as a myriad suns,
Verse 50 (padma.6.71.50)
krīḍaṁtaṁ tatra deveśaṁ sāṣṭāṁgaṁ daṁḍavatpunaḥ taṁ dṛṣṭvā tu mahādevo vismayotphullalocanaḥ
beholding that Lord of gods sporting there, he once more prostrated fully upon the ground. Beholding him, Mahadeva too, his eyes wide with astonishment,
Verse 51 (padma.6.71.51)
vaiṣṇavānāṁ paraḥ śreṣṭhaḥ prāha vāḍavasattamam kasmādiha samāyāto vada devarṣisattama
said to that excellent brahmin, the most excellent among Vaishnavas: 'O foremost of divine sages, for what reason have you come here? Tell me.'
Verse 52 (padma.6.71.52)
nārada uvāca- ekasminneva kāle tu gato'haṁ brahmaṇoṁtikam śrutaṁ tatra mayā deva viṣṇormāhātmyamuttamam
Narada said: At one and the same time I went into the presence of Brahma; there, O god, I heard the excellent glory of Vishnu.
Verse 53 (padma.6.71.53)
brahmaṇā kathitaṁ tatra mamāgre devasattama nāmno'sya yāvatī śaktiḥ sā śrutā brahmaṇo mukhāt
There Brahma told me, O best of gods - I heard from Brahma's own mouth how great the power of his name is.
Verse 54 (padma.6.71.54)
tatra pṛṣṭaṁ mayā pūrvaṁ viṣṇornāmasahasrakam tadāhaṁ brahmaṇā coktaṁ nāhaṁ jānāmi nārada
There I first asked about the thousand names of Vishnu; then Brahma told me: 'O Narada, I do not know this,
Verse 55 (padma.6.71.55)
jānātyayaṁ mahārudrastatsarvaṁ kathayiṣyati mahāścaryaṁ tu saṁprāpya hyāgatastava sannidhau
this great Rudra knows it; he shall tell you all of this.' Thus, filled with great wonder, I have come into your presence.
Verse 56 (padma.6.71.56)
asminkaliyuge ghore'lpāyuṣaścaiva mānavāḥ vidharmeṣu ratā nityaṁ nāmaniṣṭhā na vai punaḥ
In this terrible Kali age, men of short lifespan remain ever engrossed in false observances, without devotion to the [divine] name,
Verse 57 (padma.6.71.57)
pākhaṁḍinastathā viprā dharmeṣu viratāḥ sadā saṁdhyāhīna vratabhraṣṭā duṣṭā malinarūpiṇaḥ
and even the brahmins, become hypocrites, remain ever averse to dharma, devoid of twilight-worship, fallen from their vows, wicked, and of impure conduct.
Verse 58 (padma.6.71.58)
yathā viprāstathā kṣatrā vaiśyāścaiva punaḥ punaḥ evaṁ śūdrāstathānye ca na vai bhāgavatā narāḥ
As the brahmins, so too the kshatriyas and vaishyas again and again [have fallen into this same fault]; likewise the shudras and other people too are no longer Bhagavatas.
Verse 59 (padma.6.71.59)

Even in my childhood I beheld my own father's starving subjects; through their sorrow, unable to sustain them, [he] worshipped Shri [Lakshmi] alone and thus supported them.
Verse 322 (padma.6.71.322)
tayā saṁnihitābhyaśca prajābhyo bhavadādayaḥ vilasaṁti sa śakrādyāḥ sasuhṛnmitrabāṁdhavāḥ
By her very presence, even gods like yourself sport together with your subjects, together with Indra and the rest, together with your friends, well-wishers and kin.
Verse 323 (padma.6.71.323)
tayā vinā kva devatvaṁ kvaiśvaryaṁ kva parigrahaḥ sarve bhavaṁti jīvaṁto yātanāsveva saṁsthitāḥ
Without her, where is divinity, where is majesty, where is possession? All, though living, remain established in nothing but torment.
Verse 324 (padma.6.71.324)
tāmṛtenaiva dharmo'tha kāmo mokṣo'pi dūrataḥ kṣudhitānāṁ durgatānāṁ kuto yogasamādhayaḥ
Without her, even dharma becomes devoid of its nectar, let alone desire and liberation; how could yoga and meditative absorption ever come to those who are hungry and fallen into misfortune?
Verse 325 (padma.6.71.325)
sa ca saṁsārasāraikaḥ sarvalokaikanāyakaḥ vaśagā kamalā yasya tyaktvā tāmapi śaṁkaraḥ
He [Vishnu] alone is the very essence of worldly existence, the sole master of all the worlds; he in whose sway Kamala [Lakshmi] herself remains, and even leaving her aside, Shankara [praises him] -
Verse 326 (padma.6.71.326)
anauddhatyena śaucena rūpeṇārjavasaṁpadā sarvātiśayavīryeṇa saṁpūrṇasya mahātmanaḥ
of that great-souled one, who is complete with humility, purity, beauty, the wealth of simplicity, and valor surpassing all things,
Verse 327 (padma.6.71.327)
kastena tulyatāmeti devadevena viṣṇunā yasyāṁśāṁśāvatāreṇa vinā sarvaṁ vilīyate
who can be equal to that God of gods, Vishnu, without even a portion of whose portion's incarnation everything would dissolve away?
Verse 328 (padma.6.71.328)
jagadetattathāpyāhurdoṣāyaitadvimohitāḥ nāsya janma na vā mṛtyurnāprāpyaṁ svārthameva ca
Yet the world, deluded by this very fact, speaks of it only as a fault - he has neither birth nor death, nor anything unattained, nor any self-interest whatever,
Verse 329 (padma.6.71.329)
kāmādyāsaktacittatvātkiṁ tu sarveśvaraprabho tvanmayatvātpramādādvā śaknomi paṭhituṁ na cet
but only because their minds are attached to desire and the rest [does the world fail to understand him]. O Lord of all lords, whether through being of your very own nature or through some lapse, if I am unable to recite this [properly],
Verse 330 (padma.6.71.330)
viṣṇoḥ sahasranāmaitatpratyahaṁ vṛṣabhadhvaja nāmnaikena tu yena syāttatphalaṁ brūhi me prabho
then, O bull-bannered one, [in place of reading] this thousand-name hymn of Vishnu every day, tell me that one single name by which that very same fruit might be obtained, O Lord.
Verse 331 (padma.6.71.331)
mahādeva uvāca- rāmarāmeti rāmeti rame rāme manorame sahasranāmatattulyaṁ rāmanāma varānane
Mahadeva said: Saying 'Rama, Rama', saying 'Rama', delighting in Rama alone, O charming one - the name of Rama is equal to the thousand names, O fair-faced one!
