śrīmahādeva uvāca- brāhmaṇā vā kṣatriyā vā vaiśyā vā girikanyake śūdrā vātha viśeṣeṇa paṭhaṁtyanudinaṁ yadi
Sri Mahadeva said: O mountain's daughter, whether brahmins, kshatriyas, vaishyas, or even shudras, if they read this every day with particular devotion,
Verse 2 (padma.6.72.2)
dhanadhānyasamāyuktā yāṁti viṣṇoḥ paraṁ padam ślokaṁ vā ślokamarddhaṁ vā pādaṁ pādārddhameva vā
they become endowed with wealth and grain and attain the supreme state of Vishnu. A single verse, or half a verse, or a quarter-verse, or even half a quarter-verse -
Verse 3 (padma.6.72.3)
paṭhanānmokṣamāpnoti yāvadābhūtasaṁplavam vinyāsena yutaṁ devi viṣṇornāmasahasrakam
by reading even that, liberation is attained, lasting until the very dissolution of the ages. O goddess, this thousand-name hymn of Vishnu, together with its ritual placements,
Verse 4 (padma.6.72.4)
ye paṭhaṁti naraśreṣṭhāste yāṁti padamavyayam ekakālaṁ dvikālaṁ vā trikālaṁ vātha yaḥ paṭhet
those excellent men who read it attain the imperishable state. Whoever reads it once, twice, or thrice [each day],
Verse 5 (padma.6.72.5)
dhanāyurvardhate tasya yāvadiṁdrāścaturdaśa putrānpautrāṁstathālakṣmī saṁpadaṁ vipulāṁ labhet
his wealth and lifespan increase for the duration of fourteen Indras; he obtains, together with sons and grandsons, the abundant prosperity of Lakshmi.
Verse 6 (padma.6.72.6)
kimanyadbahunoktena bhūyo bhūyo varānane viṣṇornāmasahasraṁ tu paraṁ nirvāṇadāyakam
O fair-faced one, what use is there in saying more, again and again - this thousand-name hymn of Vishnu bestows supreme liberation.
Verse 7 (padma.6.72.7)
pūjanaṁ prathamaṁ tasya kṛtaṁ yena nareṇa tu saṁpūrṇaṁ pūjite viṣṇau tasya pūjā ca vārṣikī
Whatever man has first performed the worship [with this hymn] - when Vishnu has thus been fully worshipped, that worship of his is reckoned to bear fruit for a whole year.
Verse 8 (padma.6.72.8)
vyagratvaṁ ca na karttavyaṁ paṭhane tu viśeṣataḥ yadi cetkriyate pāṭhe hyāyurvittaṁ ca naśyati
One should not, in particular, hasten through its recitation; if the recitation is done in haste, both lifespan and wealth are destroyed.
Verse 9 (padma.6.72.9)
yāvaṁti bhuvi tīrthāni jaṁbudvīpeṣu sarvadā tāni tīrthāni tatraiva viṣṇornāmasahasrakam
Wherever this thousand-name hymn of Vishnu is present, there dwell all the sacred crossings that ever exist upon the earth, in Jambudvipa.
Verse 10 (padma.6.72.10)
tatraiva gaṁgā yamunā ca veṇī godāvarī tatra sarasvatī ca sarvāṇi tīrthāni vasaṁti tatra yatra sthitaṁ nāmasahasrakaṁ tat
There too are the Ganga, Yamuna, Veni, Godavari, and Sarasvati; wherever that thousand-name hymn is established, there all the sacred crossings dwell.
Verse 11 (padma.6.72.11)
idaṁ pavitraṁ paramaṁ bhaktānāṁ vallabhaṁ sadā dhyeyaṁ hi dāsabhāvena bhaktibhāvena cetasā
This is supremely pure, ever dear to devotees; it should be contemplated in the mind with the spirit of a servant and with devotion.
Verse 12 (padma.6.72.12)
paraṁ sahasranāmākhyaṁ ye paṭhaṁti manīṣiṇaḥ sarvapāpavinirmuktāste yāṁti harisaṁnidhau
Those wise ones who recite this supreme thousand-name hymn become freed from every sin and go into the presence of Hari.
Verse 13 (padma.6.72.13)
aruṇodayakāle tu ye paṭhaṁti japaṁti ca āyurbalaṁ ca teṣāṁ śrīrvarddhate ca dinedine
Those who read and chant it at the time of dawn - their lifespan, strength, and glory increase with every passing day.
Verse 14 (padma.6.72.14)
rātrau jāgaraṇe prāpte kalau bhāgavato naraḥ paṭhanānmuktimāpnoti yāvadiṁdrāścaturdaśa
When keeping vigil at night, a Bhagavata man in the Kali age, by reading it, attains liberation lasting for the duration of fourteen Indras.
Verse 15 (padma.6.72.15)
ekaikena tu nāmnā vai harau tulasikāraṇāt pūjā sā caiva vijñeyā koṭiyajñaphalādhikā
The worship [performed] by offering a tulasi leaf to Hari with each single name should be known to exceed even the fruit of a myriad sacrifices.
Verse 16 (padma.6.72.16)
mārge ca gacchamānāstu ye paṭhaṁti dvijātayaḥ na doṣā mārgajāsteṣāṁ bhavaṁti kila pārvati
O Parvati, those brahmins who read it even while walking upon a road certainly do not incur the faults arising from that road.
Verse 17 (padma.6.72.17)
śṛṇu devi pravakṣyāmi māhātmyaṁ keśavasya tu ye śṛṇvaṁti naraśreṣṭhāste puṇyāḥ puṇyarūpiṇaḥ
O goddess, listen, I shall now tell the glory of Keshava. Those excellent men who hear it become meritorious souls, of the very form of merit.
