The Purificatory Rite of Vishnu (Apamarjana)

Chapter 77All chaptersChapter 79

Verse 1 (padma.6.78.1)

mahādeva uvāca athātaḥ saṁpravakṣyāmi apāmārjanamuttamam pulastyena yathoktaṁ tu dālabhyāya mahātmane

Mahadeva said: Now I shall declare that excellent rite of apamarjana (purificatory cleansing), as it was spoken by the sage Pulastya to the great soul Dalabhya.

Verse 2 (padma.6.78.2)

sarveṣāṁ rogadoṣāṇāṁ nāśanaṁ maṁgalapradam tatte'haṁ tu pravakṣyāmi śṛṇu tvaṁ naganaṁdini

It destroys all afflictions of disease and confers auspiciousness. O daughter of the mountain, I shall tell it to you — listen.

Verse 3 (padma.6.78.3)

śrīdālabhya uvāca bhagavanprāṇinaḥ sarve viṣarogādyupadravaiḥ kuṣṭhagrahābhibhūtāśca sarvakāle hyupadrutāḥ

Shri Dalabhya said: O Lord, all beings are ever afflicted by poison, disease, and other calamities, and are overcome by leprosy and planetary afflictions.

Verse 4 (padma.6.78.4)

ābhicārikakṛtyādyā bahurogāśca dāruṇāḥ na bhavaṁti muniśreṣṭha tanme tvaṁ vaktumarhasi

O best of sages, please tell me that by which sorcery, black magic, and many terrible diseases may not occur.

Verse 5 (padma.6.78.5)

pulastya uvāca vratopavāsaniyamairviṣṇurvai toṣitastu yaiḥ te narā naiva rogārttā jāyaṁte munisattama

Pulastya said: O best of sages, those who have satisfied Vishnu through vows, fasting, and disciplined observances never become afflicted with disease.

Verse 6 (padma.6.78.6)

yairna kṛtaṁ vrataṁ puṇyaṁ na dānaṁ na tapastadā na tīrthaṁ devapūjā ca nānnaṁ dattaṁ tu bhūriśaḥ

Those who have performed no meritorious vow, no charity, no austerity; undertaken no pilgrimage, no worship of the gods; and given no abundant food-offerings —

Verse 7 (padma.6.78.7)

te vai lokāstadā jñeyā rogadoṣaiḥ prapīḍitāḥ ārogyaṁ paramāmṛddhiṁ manasā yadyadicchati

— such people should be known as afflicted with disease. Whoever, in his mind, desires health and supreme prosperity —

Verse 8 (padma.6.78.8)

tattadāpnotyasaṁdigdhaṁ viṣṇoḥ sevī viśeṣataḥ nādhiṁ prāpnoti na vyādhiṁ na viṣagrahabaṁdhanam

— attains it without doubt, especially if he is a devotee of Vishnu. He suffers neither mental anguish nor bodily disease, neither poison nor the bondage of malefic planets.

Verse 9 (padma.6.78.9)

kṛtyāsparśabhayaṁ nāpi toṣite madhusūdane samastadoṣanāśaśca sarvadā ca śubhā grahāḥ

When Madhusudana is pleased, there is not even the fear of being touched by sorcery. All afflictions are destroyed, and the planets remain ever auspicious.

Verse 10 (padma.6.78.10)

When Janardana is pleased, he becomes unassailable even by the gods. He who sees all beings as he sees himself —

Verse 11 (padma.6.78.11)

upavāsādinā tena toṣito madhusūdanaḥ toṣite tatra jāyaṁte narāḥ pūrṇamanorathāḥ

— pleases Madhusudana through fasting and the like. When he is pleased, people's desires are fulfilled.

Verse 12 (padma.6.78.12)

arogāḥ sukhino bhogabhoktāro munisattama teṣāṁ ca śatravo naiva na ca rogābhicārikam

O best of sages, they become free of disease, happy, and enjoyers of pleasures. They have no enemies, nor any disease or sorcery that can touch them.

Verse 13 (padma.6.78.13)

graharogādikaṁ caiva pāpakāryaṁ na jāyate avyāhatāni kṛṣṇasya cakrādīnyāyudhāni vai rakṣaṁti sakalāpadbhyo yena viṣṇurupāsitaḥ

Planetary afflictions, disease, and sinful deeds never touch them. Krishna's unfailing weapons — the discus and the rest — protect from every calamity the one who has worshipped Vishnu.

Verse 14 (padma.6.78.14)

Verse 15 (padma.6.78.15)

paśyadbhiḥ sarvabhūtasthaṁ vāsudevaṁ sanātanam samadṛṣṭibhirapyatra tanme brūhi viśeṣataḥ

— those who, seeing with equal vision, behold the eternal Vasudeva present in all beings — tell me this in particular.

Verse 16 (padma.6.78.16)

— the fierce Mukhamandalika spirits, Revati and Vriddhirevati, the terrible spirits called Vriddhika, and also the Mother-spirits,

Verse 58 (padma.6.78.58)

bālasya viṣṇoścaritaṁ haṁtu bālagrahānapi vṛddhānāṁ ye grahāḥ kecidbālānāṁ cāpi ye grahāḥ

— may the deeds of the child Vishnu destroy even the spirits that afflict children. Whatever spirits afflict the old, and whatever spirits afflict children —

Verse 59 (padma.6.78.59)

nṛsiṁhadarśanādeva naśyaṁte tatkṣaṇādapi daṁṣṭrākarālavadano nṛsiṁho daityabhīṣaṇaḥ

— are destroyed the very instant one beholds Narasimha. Narasimha, his face terrible with fangs, dreadful to the demons —

Verse 60 (padma.6.78.60)

taṁ dṛṣṭvā te grahāḥ sarve dūraṁ yāṁti viśeṣataḥ śrīnṛsiṁhamahāsiṁhajvālāmālojjvalānana

— seeing him, all those spirits flee far away. O glorious Narasimha, great lion, whose face blazes with garlands of flame —

Verse 61 (padma.6.78.61)

grahānaśeṣānsarveśa nudasvāsya vilocana ye rogā ye mahotpātā ye dviṣo ye mahāgrahāḥ

— O lord of all, O far-seeing one, drive away all this person's afflicting spirits. Whatever diseases, whatever great calamities, whatever enemies, whatever great malefic spirits —

Verse 62 (padma.6.78.62)

yāni ca krūrabhūtāni grahapīḍāśca dāruṇāḥ śastrakṣateṣu ye rogā jvālagardabhikādayaḥ

— whatever cruel spirits there be, whatever terrible afflictions from malefic spirits; whatever diseases arise in weapon-wounds, carbuncles and the like,

Verse 63 (padma.6.78.63)

visphoṭakādayo ye ca grahā gātreṣu saṁsthitāḥ trailokyarakṣākarttastvaṁ duṣṭadānavavāraṇa

— pustular eruptions and the like, and whatever spirits reside in the limbs — O protector of the three worlds, O restrainer of wicked demons,

Verse 64 (padma.6.78.64)

sudarśanamahātejaśchiṁdhi chiṁdhi mahājvaram chiṁdhi vātaṁ ca lūtāṁ ca chiṁdhi ghoraṁ mahāviṣam

— O Sudarshana, of great splendor, cut, cut this great fever asunder. Cut asunder the wind-disease and the spider's poison, cut asunder the terrible, mighty poison.

Verse 65 (padma.6.78.65)

uddaṁḍāmaraśūlaṁ ca viṣajvālāsagardabham oṁ hāṁhāṁhūṁhūṁ pradhāreṇa kuṭhāreṇa hanaddivaṣaḥ

— cut asunder the violent headache and colic pain, the burning of poison, and the carbuncle disease. Om hāṁ hāṁ hūṁ hūṁ — with this potent utterance, strike down the poison as with an axe.

Verse 66 (padma.6.78.66)

oṁ namo bhagavate sudarśanāya duḥkhadāraṇavigraha yāni cānyāni duṣṭāni prāṇipīḍākarāṇi vai

Om, salutation to the Lord Sudarshana, whose very form tears sorrow apart. And whatever other evil forces there are that cause affliction to living beings —

Verse 67 (padma.6.78.67)

tāni sarvāṇi sarvātmā paramātmā janārdanaḥ kiṁcidrūpaṁ samāsthāya vāsudeva namostu te

— may Janardana, the Supreme Self dwelling in all, destroy all of them. O Vasudeva, whatever form you assume, salutation to you.

Verse 68 (padma.6.78.68)

kṣiptvā sudarśanaṁ cakraṁ jvālamālāvibhīṣaṇam sarvaduṣṭopaśamanaṁ kuru deva varācyuta

Hurling forth the Sudarshana discus, terrible with its garland of flames, O god, O excellent Achyuta, bring peace by subduing all that is evil.

Verse 69 (padma.6.78.69)

sudarśanamahācakra goviṁdasya varāyudha tīkṣṇadhāra mahāvega sūryakoṭisamadyute

O great Sudarshana discus, excellent weapon of Govinda, sharp-edged, of tremendous speed, blazing with the splendor of a million suns —

Verse 70 (padma.6.78.70)

sudarśanamahājvāla chiṁdhi chiṁdhi mahārava sarvaduḥkhāni rakṣāṁsi pāpāni ca vibhīṣaṇa

O Sudarshana of great flame and mighty roar, cut, cut asunder. O terrible one, cut asunder all sorrows, all demons, and all sins.

Verse 71 (padma.6.78.71)

duritaṁ hana cārogyaṁ kuru tvaṁ bho sudarśana prācyāṁ caiva pratīcyāṁ ca dakṣiṇottaratastathā

O Sudarshana, destroy this misfortune and grant health. In the east and in the west, and in the south and the north,

Verse 72 (padma.6.78.72)

rakṣāṁ karotu viśvātmā narasiṁhaḥ svagarjitaiḥ bhūmyāṁtarikṣe ca tathā pṛṣṭhataḥ pārśvato'grataḥ rakṣāṁ karotu bhagavānbahurūpī janārdanaḥ

— may Narasimha, the soul of the universe, protect with his roar. Upon the earth and in the sky, behind, beside, and in front — may the many-formed Lord Janardana grant protection.

Verse 73 (padma.6.78.73)

yathā viṣṇumayaṁ sarvaṁ sadevāsuramānuṣam tena satyena sakalaṁ duḥkhamasya praṇaśyatu

As all that exists, together with gods, demons, and men, is pervaded by Vishnu — by that very truth may all of this person's suffering be destroyed.

Verse 74 (padma.6.78.74)

yathā yogeśvaro viṣṇuḥ sarvadeveṣu gīyate tena satyena sakalaṁ duḥkhamasya praṇaśyatu

As Vishnu, the lord of yoga, is glorified among all the gods — by that very truth may all of this person's suffering be destroyed.

Verse 75 (padma.6.78.75)

paramātmā yathā viṣṇurvedāṁgeṣu ca gīyate tena satyena viśvātmā sukhado'stvasya keśavaḥ

As Vishnu, the Supreme Self, is celebrated in the auxiliary Vedic texts — by that very truth may Keshava, the soul of the universe, become the giver of happiness to this person.

Verse 76 (padma.6.78.76)

śāṁtirastu śivaṁ cāstu praṇāśaṁ yātu cāsukham vāsudevaśarīrotthaiḥ kuśaiḥ saṁmārjitaṁ mayā

May there be peace, may there be well-being, and may sorrow come to its destruction. With these kusha grasses, born as it were of Vasudeva's own body, I have performed this cleansing.

Verse 77 (padma.6.78.77)

apāmārjitagoviṁda namo nārāyaṇastathā tathāpi sarvaduḥkhānāṁ praśamo vacanāddhareḥ

Salutation to Govinda, the performer of this cleansing, and salutation likewise to Narayana. Thus, by the very word of Hari, may all sorrows come to peace.

Verse 78 (padma.6.78.78)

śāṁtāḥ samastadoṣāste grahāḥ sarve viṣāṇi ca bhūtāni ca praśāmyaṁti saṁsmṛte madhusūdane

All afflictions are pacified; all malefic spirits, all poisons, and all evil beings are pacified the moment Madhusudana is remembered.

Verse 79 (padma.6.78.79)

ete kuśā viṣṇuśarīrasaṁbhavā janārdano'haṁ svayameva cāgrataḥ hataṁ mayā duḥkhamaśeṣamasya vai svastho bhavatveṣa vaco yathā hareḥ

These kusha grasses are born of Vishnu's own body, and I myself, as it were Janardana, stand before this person. I have destroyed his sorrow entirely; may he become wholly well, in accordance with the word of Hari.

Verse 80 (padma.6.78.80)

śāṁtirastu śivaṁ cāstu praṇaśyatu sukhaṁ ca yat yadasya duritaṁ kiṁcitkṣiptaṁ tallavaṇāṁbhasi

May there be peace, may there be well-being, and may every misfortune be destroyed. Whatever sin belongs to this person is, as it were, cast away into salt water.

Verse 81 (padma.6.78.81)

svāsthyamasya sadaivāstu hṛṣīkeśasya kīrtanāt yadyato'trāgataṁ pāpaṁ tattu tatra pragacchatu

Through the glorification of Hrishikesha, may this person have good health forever. Let whatever sin came from wherever return back to that very place.

Verse 82 (padma.6.78.82)

etadrogeṣu pīḍāsu jaṁtūnāṁ hitamicchubhiḥ viṣṇubhaktaiśca karttavyamapāmārjanakaṁ param

In diseases and afflictions, those devotees of Vishnu who desire the welfare of living beings should perform this supreme rite of apamarjana.

Verse 83 (padma.6.78.83)

anena sarvaduḥkhāni vilayaṁ yāṁtyaśeṣataḥ sarvapāpaviśudhyarthaṁ viṣṇoścaivāpamārjanam

By this, all sorrows are entirely destroyed. This apamarjana rite of Vishnu is for the purification of all sins.

Verse 84 (padma.6.78.84)

ārdraṁ śuṣkaṁ laghusthūlaṁ brahmahatyādikaṁ tu yat tatsarvaṁ naśyate tūrṇaṁ tamovadravidarśanāt

Whether it is a fresh or old sin, light or grave, even one as heavy as the killing of a brahmin — all of it is instantly destroyed, as darkness vanishes at the sight of the sun.

Verse 85 (padma.6.78.85)

naśyaṁti rogā doṣāśca siṁhātkṣudramṛgā yathā grahabhūtapiśācādi śravaṇādeva naśyatu

Diseases and afflictions flee, as small beasts flee from a lion. May malefic spirits, ghosts, and demons be destroyed by the mere hearing of this.

Verse 86 (padma.6.78.86)

dravyārthaṁ lobhaparamairna karttavyaṁ kadācana kṛtepāmārjane kiṁcinna grāhyaṁ hitakāmyayā

This should never be performed for the sake of wealth, driven by greed. Once the apamarjana is performed out of a wish for another's welfare, nothing should be accepted in return.

Verse 87 (padma.6.78.87)

nirapekṣaiḥ prakartavyamādimadhyāṁtabodhakaiḥ viṣṇubhaktaiḥ sadā śāṁtairanyathā siddhidaṁ bhavet

It should be performed only by desireless devotees of Vishnu, ever peaceful and versed in its beginning, middle, and end — otherwise it does not grant its intended fruit.

Verse 88 (padma.6.78.88)

atuleyaṁ nṛṇāṁ siddhiriyaṁ rakṣā parā nṛṇām bheṣajaṁ paramaṁ hyetadviṣṇoryadapamārjanam

This is an incomparable attainment for men; this is the supreme protection for men. This apamarjana of Vishnu is indeed the supreme medicine.

Verse 89 (padma.6.78.89)

uktaṁ hi brahmaṇā pūrvaṁ pulastyāya sutāya vai etatpulastyamunidālabhyāyotaṁ svayam

This was long ago spoken by Brahma to his son Pulastya; and this same teaching was spoken by the sage Pulastya himself to Dalabhya.

Verse 90 (padma.6.78.90)

sarvabhūtahitārthāya dālabhyena prakāśitam trailokye tadidaṁ viṣṇoḥ samāptaṁ cāpamārjanam

Dalabhya revealed it for the welfare of all beings. Thus, this apamarjana of Vishnu, known throughout the three worlds, is concluded.

Verse 91 (padma.6.78.91)

tavāgre kathitaṁ devi yato bhaktāsi me sadā śrutvā tu sarvaṁ bhaktyā ca rogāndoṣānvyapohati

O goddess, I have told this before you because you are ever my devotee. Whoever hears all of this with devotion drives away all diseases and afflictions.
